Brothers Justin and Brice Allen drive and co-drive for our District 38 races, but they share seat time with Jay Allen and Austin Peat for the larger races, like the Mint 400, which we successfully finished for the first time this year! Our pit crew is led by our dad, Jim Allen. The ladies of our family also play a huge role in the pits. Kim Allen, Alyissa Allen, Lauren Allen, and Madisyn Craft always ensure we have everything we need in the car and keep track of our lap times and place standings.

Is this the end of SCFTA as we know it?
Two things I dislike very much. Okay. Maybe hate. Boasting is one and making promises you can't keep is another. I believe they call it, "over promising and under delivering."
Last fall I had the occasion to listen to an introductory speech by one of the new leaders of the SCFTA organization at Perris Raceway. The promises of the glory to come and boasting of the success unlike anyone has ever attained before on the motocross track gave one pause to wonder if the future was being greatly overpromoted and exaggerated.
Perris was the holy grail for flat trackers young and old in Southern California and sometimes farther away. To win a race at Perris was the ultimate goal for some and the stepping stone toward greatness for others.
But now it’s a place of dissension and bitterness and it’s almost blasphemous to see motocross bikes using it as an extension of their larger course, or karts racing around. This, the hallowed ground for two wheeled purpose built flat track bikes was being desecrated.
Perris flat track history far outdates running under the
"From motorcycle races on insane wooden tracks in the 1910s to legitimate racing series that test the mettle of both manufacturer and rider; flat track racing deserves the designation as one of the all-time great forms of Motorsport."
banner of Southern California Flat Track Association, but the history we can account for goes back to the mid 1990’s when SCFTA was known by it’s original name of San Diego Flat Track Association.
Wayne Hosaka, a former pro racer who was paralyzed after crashing at Ascot in the early 1970s, rallied years later and returned to the flat track scene. The catalyst for that return was when we invited him to pen a monthly column in the magazine called Old Dirt, recapturing memories of his early days of riding and racing in San Diego County and beyond.
Struggling with the emotional and physical fallout of his injury 25 years earlier Wayne had steered clear of the motorcycle community, but now he was back with a vengeance.
Along with a group of like-minded flat track enthusiasts a club was formed and
named San Diego Flat Track Association.
Recognizing the need for a promoter, Bruce Sanford, who had a history of successfully promoting a variety of motorcycle events in San Diego and Imperial Counties was brought on board to get the racing going. For the next eight or nine years, Bruce promoted flat track races at Barona in San Diego County, Temecula and Competition Park in Riverside County, all the way to Victorville in San Bernardino County, with the name of San Diego Flat Track Association eventually morphing to Southern California Flat Track Association to take in the venture outside of San Diego.
In early 2004 Bruce's health problems forced him to step down from heading the organization and the leadership transferred to the owners of Perris Raceway, where the racing continued without pause until the most recent transition brought everything to a halt, in spite of all the bright promises made last fall.
We spent the last two seasons of the traditional flat track racing at Perris supporting our granddaughter who successfully pursued two championships there, and had the opportunity to meet a man who's passion for flat track rivaled that of Wayne and the early founders of the organization. His wife, equally so, also invested hundreds if not thousands of hours over the past couple of years, anticipating that as the current leadership stepped down, they would take over the leadership.
But a last minute change saw the leadership transferred to the
managers of the motocross track at Perris. Motocross? And where is the passion for flat track, the "most traditional form of motorcycle racing in the United States," according to the American Motorcyclist Association? Is that passion there? That remains to be seen, as we are now approaching what should be the end of the first half of the season for 2024, and not one flat track motorcycle race has been held, despite all the early promises. Is this the end for the historical purpose of SCFTA? Speedway and kart racing, maybe even a little motocross,
#12e James Ott leading #60 Nick Armstrong and #46 Andre Ochs in the Pro class in a 2018 race at Perris. Ott is currently running in sixth place in the 450 Singles class of the American Flat Track pro racing series. Armstrong and Ochs also competed at the pro level, both with a long history of racing at Perris. Ochs started winning early in the 50cc class at Perris in 2004.

seems to be taking a priority.
Or is it a similar problem
occurred in the early formation
club? One of conflicts and differing opinions among the members?
is the case, there may be hope
can all be overcome and the
be brighter for the sport. In reading
our archives of Wayne's old articles, I saw that even Wayne stepped away from San Diego Flat Track Association for a season because of infighting and conflicts, yet he returned, as did others who expressed the same early frustrations during the foundational times.
As all that was overcome back in the 1990's to go on to be a successful racing organization that produced racers who have grown to compete at a professional level, then I have hope, that
"Flat Track Racing, considered the oldest, longestrunning and most traditional motorcycle racing, is commonly referred to as 'dirt track' racing. Flat track was born of the delirious, dangerous board track
races
of the early 20th century. Organizers would build ovals out of oiled wood planks and put on weekend races."

Racing at Perris Raceway
a long held dream for amateur racer Summer Kukla
personality conflicts and differing opinions can once again be conquered and SCFTA will continue to provide quality racing for a new generation of motorcycle flat track racers and to bring back the 40, 50, 60 and 70+ competitors who still love giving their all on the track as well as enjoying the comradery they share in the pits.
Only time will tell. E
The Women's Pro Podium includes #143L Megan Griffiths, second; #1L Ava Silvestri, first overall and #459L Britney Gallegos, finishing third.
Round two of the AMA West Hare Scrambles presented by Mojo Motosport traveled to beautiful Jacksonville, Oregon in mid April.
The Timber Mountain Hare Scramble hosted by the Motorcycle Riders Association (MRA) took racers into the first wooded race of the season; offering racers flowing tight single track that took them in and out of the trees and through the scenic mountainous trails.
In traditional pacific northwest fashion, consistent rains persisted right up to the start of the race. The otherwise chocolate dirt quickly turned to mud, and racers were forced to navigate rutted lines while finding their way safely through the lappers. As a fan-favorite venue of the season it was no surprise the event saw an excellent turn out, with over 400 racers in attendance. The 12.5 mile course took the fastest pro racer just under 30 minutes to complete, with the race being 2.5 hours long.
Returning series Pro Champion, RedBull FMF Factory KTM Racing’s Dante Oliveira, arrived in Jacksonville feeling good coming off of a win at the season-opener in Doyle, CA. Although others were timid with the wet terrain, Dante was excited about the rain “slowing things down a bit and keeping the dust down". Although he was initially overtaken
by his teammate Mateo Oliveira, the champ secured his P1 position finishing an astounding one second in front of his brother. The two secured the first two podium positions, clocking times of 2:52:37 and 2:52:38 unofficially. Rounding out the Pro podium was 3Bros Hatch GASGAS Racing team’s Giacomo Redondi, who secured his third place position just under four minutes behind the pair.
The Pro Women’s class had an excellent turn out, with defending two-time champion Ava Silvestri prepared to maintain her title aboard her GASGAS factory supported red machine. The women had the benefit of racing the 1.5 hour morning race, being the first to touch the already heavily saturated course. This turned out to be a much-appreciated benefit. As the course saw more and more racers, the lines became more defined and muddy ruts deepened. Strategic line choice was essential to all the racer’s finishes, and would prove fundamental to Silvestri’s eventual top-ofthe-box finish. Just under three minutes behind her, Meg Griffiths, a newcomer to the Hare Scrambles, secured an impressive second place finish. Less than two minutes later, Factory Beta Racing Team’s Britney Gallegos rocketed in to scoring and nabbed the final podium position.
Pro 250
Finishing a mere 27-seconds behind the Pro podium finishers, FMF RPM KTM Racing Team racer
Jaden Dahners secured his Pro 250 win seemingly with ease. The KTM supported racer remained in the first
place position for his class all six laps, with second place finisher Sherco Factory Racing Team’s Layton Smail not far behind. Smail had some minor technical difficulties aboard his 250 SEF, which kept him far enough behind Dahners to allow them both a clean finish in round two of the seven round series. Husqvarna factory support racer Ryder Thomaselli blew through the checkers with a solid third place, awarding him the final step on the Pro 250 podium. The tight single track wasn’t all that was tight this weekend, with less than five minutes separating the top three finishers in all Pro classes!
Round three of the AMA West Hare Scrambles is May 11th and 12th, in Prineville, Oregon. Visit www. westharescrambles.com for more info, race registration, results, and live scoring.

Warfighter Made Vets Take On the Mint 400
By Mike Shatynski AKA Admiral MikeThe Mint 400 hosted both Modern and Vintage Military vehicles on the grueling course which allowed both Flyer One and Flyer 72 to compete together in a generational span of 30 years of off road technology
An extraordinary team of veterans from Warfighter Made, a vet non-profit based in Temecula CA, conquered hundreds of miles of Nevada desert in the 2024 Mint 400. There were 387 entries in this year’s Mint 400 with 11 in the popular Vintage and Modern Military vehicle classes.
Warfighter Made’s race was a Joint Forces effort with 14 veterans from four branches driving the Warfighter Made vehicles. Only six of the veterans had desert racing experience before this race. The race was extra special because one of the Warfighters had to cross the finish line to marry his fiancée who patiently waited for 400 long miles!
The Warfighters campaigned four vehicles, three of which were Vintage Military vehicles: a Flyer Defense LSV or Light Strike Vehicle, a GM HMMWV or Humvee, and a CUCV or Civilian Utility Cargo Vehicle aka Chevy Blazer.
Each vehicle had a team of drivers/co-drivers who took turns driving and navigating the challenging course. The fourth vehicle, a Polaris UTV in the extremely competitive Pro NA or Professional Naturally Aspirated UTV class, was driven by one “Ironman” driver, prospective groom Tim Hall USA, along with his dedicated co-driver Will Blinko USA, his brother and best man.
The class winner was the Flyer One buggy with race number M22 and nicknamed “Flyer 22”. The race number 22 was chosen to show that our off road family and our race team’s comradery can help prevent the 22 veterans lost each day to suicide. Team Captain Danny Novoa USMC shared the driving and co-driving duties of “22” with Thomas Smith USA, Jim Brletic USMC, and Tim Anderson USMC. After almost eight hours on the rugged course, the Warfighters in “22” crossed the finish line for a well-earned checkered flag.
Team Captain Rob Blanton USMC embraces teammates Richard Rivas USA, Michelle Jeffries-Alarcon, and Ken Urquhart USMC after a tough fought race to the finish line and a second place trophy
Two Vietnam veterans, John Lannom and Larry Mills USAF, were the heart and soul of captain Alex Hernandez's team including co-captain Joseph Contreras USMC, Gwen Clark USAF, and Dominic Thome USMC.
The Warfighter Made Flyer One "22" buggy and Chevy Blazer "Chicharron" raced through the Mint 400 infield after taking the starting flag
For vintage racing and military vehicle buffs, the history of “Flyer 22” is fascinating. It is actually a vintage Raceco “Flyer One” buggy which was a direct competitor with the iconic Chenowth 3-seat LSV build in the late-80’s. While the VW-based Chenowth buggy was used by America’s Navy SEALs and Force Recon Marines, the diesel-powered 4WD Raceco military buggy was used by allied special warfare operators around the world in Australia, Israel, Singapore, Greece, and other countries. Over 250 Flyer One LSVs were built in the early 90’s.
US Special Operations Command’s newest Advanced Light Strike Vehicle (ALSV) is Flyer One’s granddaughter, the Flyer 72, built by Raceco’s successor, Flyer Defense. It was special to see that the US Army’s Fifth Special Forces Group campaigned two of their extremely capable Flyer 72 military vehicles alongside the original Flyer One in the Modern Military vehicle class. There is no better training ground for an arduous real-world long-range desert patrol than the Mint 400!
The CUCV with race number M007 was captained by Warfighter Made president and founder, Rob Blanton USMC. His teammates included Richard Rivas USA, Michelle JeffriesAlarcon USA, Ken Urquhart USMC. The olive-drab Blazer was nicknamed “Chicharron” and finished second in class. Captain Rob stayed in the vehicle for the entire race and kept the team of inexperienced drivers on a safe pace over the brutal course. This ensured a clean and trouble-free race. After getting out of the truck, Michelle told everyone, “I wish Rob would have fallen asleep so I could really see what the Blazer could do!”
The Humvee, captained by Alex Hernandez USMC, had race number M222 and was nicknamed “Beefy”. Alex’s team
consisted of co-captain Joseph Contreras USMC/USA, John Lannom USAF, Larry Mills USAF, Gwen Clark USAF, Dominic Thome USMC. The two rockstars of the race, John and Larry, are both Vietnam veterans and have raced classic VW buggies in NORRA’s vintage races. The HMMWV got off to a late start when the power steering pump gave out en route to the start line. John and Larry installed the spare steering pump while stopped in the staging area then took the starting flag two hours late. It took some great driving but the team was able to bring “Beefy” across the finish line for an official finish despite their handicap.
The best story of the entire Mint 400 race took place late that evening when Tim Hall’s Pro NA UTV numbered 1922 crossed the finish line. Tim is a Warfighter Made sponsored athlete who has been racing UTVs for eight years with his brother Will as his co-driver. After proposing a few months earlier, he and his fiancée Nikki Betts agreed on a
Vegas wedding. And not just any Vegas wedding, a Vegas wedding at the Great American Offroad Race, the Mint 400! Tim and Will crossed the finish line to find Nikki and their entire Warfighter Made family waiting at the podium. The Mint 400 finish line announcer, Tim Shelman aka TPQ, took double-duty that night and also performed the wedding since he is an ordained minister. A rumor started soon afterwards that Tim and Nikki’s honeymoon will be the 2025 Mint 400! In a related story, Tim and Will soloed the entire race for a fourth place finish in the incredibly competitive class!
Of course, the Warfighters couldn’t finish a grueling race like this alone, they had angels! Mitch Melot USA and supporters Curtis Wegener and Andrew McKenzie chased the team around the course at Pits Gonzo and Herst. Gary Haugley and Jan Krogh-Haugley kept overwatch in the Main Pit. Kristyn Novoa, Warfighter Made’s Executive Director and
After a 4th place finish, announcer extraordinaire Tim TPS Shelman officiated the wedding at the finish line for Warfighter Tim Hall USA and Rikki Betts while Warfighter and brother Will Blinko USMC witnessed the ceremony.
wife of Shop Foreman Danny Novoa, organized and oversaw the entire race effort. Of special note, the veterans and their supporters stayed well-fed and well-hydrated because of veteran Jacob Fletcher USMC and his wife Erin, owners of Fletch Family BBQ in Oceanside CA.
Special thanks go out from all the Warfighters to the Martelli Brothers. Josh and Matt Martelli created the Military vehicle classes in the Mint 400 as a way to honor those serving today and give back to our veterans. BFG also deserves a special shout out. BFG ensured the Warfighters were supported during the race and hosted veterans and
family to VIP treatment afterwards. Best of all, the team’s BFG tires ran flawlessly for the entire race!
What is next for the Warfighter Made? The Warfighters will be racing another restored military vehicle in NORRA’s 2024 Mexican 1000! And…Calling All Vets! If you think you could benefit from Warfighter Made’s unique “comradery therapy,” please reach out on the website www.warfightermade.org. E

KING SHOCKS Battle at Primm
Car #T872, GoodTimes Racing, Brandon Campbell and co-driver Ryan Sloan qualified and raced Saturday finishing 5th, then Edward Frias, owner and builder of the car, with co-driver and wife Lauren raced on Sunday finishing in third place in Class SxS Turbo Pro.
Nothing shy of eventful. Two weeks before the race we had a minor setback when we went to shake it down so got those issues fixed. Week before the race had a successful shake down and was able to get about eight miles on the car.
Prerun kicked off Friday and about 2/3 of the way through the lap the car died and wasn’t charging. Ran into Vegas, got a new regulator and battery and put about two miles on the car just to make sure charging and voltage was good.
Race day kicked off and we lined up alongside @vwmike64 and Wisdom Racing. Had a nice battle coming out of the infield and was able to get a jump going down the straight out of the short course track. Lap one was a learning
curve with shift points and braking as we still were getting comfortable in the car! @coleproinc got by us and we just tried to hang with him as best we could!
Lap 2 we gained quite a bit of time from Lap 1 and were sitting solid second, and just got even more comfortable.
Lap 3 was absolutely clicking and was going flawless until the motor let go about mile 10.
All in all I’m stoked the car handled as good as it did the first time out. We are definitely under power but just had to work that much harder for it!
Thank you to everyone who helped us get back in the dirt. Unfortunately motors aren’t cheap so we will get back as soon as we can!
- Damian Bermudez, Brawley CAWe ran a new tire for this race because we knew Primm was a sandy softer course so we grooved our BFG projects. We had zero practice on them before throwing down a heater at qualifying. It turned out to be the right call earning us second in class and fourth overall.
Day 1 we had a good side by side battle in the infield but never looked back to finish third on day 1.
Then day 2 we started side by side with the big horsepower trophy trucks. We ended up smoking them off the line. And the top three, me, Conner and Peoples checked out from the rest of the pack. It was a flawless weekend. Car was on rails taking home third overall - Nick Carolan

The race went really smooth. I started mid pack and was able to pass all cars on the road by the end of lap three other than the UTV’s both days. The crosswind was really affecting all the cars top speed and off the jumps. I barely squeezed out the win on Sunday by 16 seconds. Overall it was a successful weekend with very little problems - Dustin Gill, first Class 9

This is kind of how my weekend went …
This was my first race towing my own car all the way from Riverside. Went to Qualify on Friday with my heart racing as the car was already not running right. I found out that some plug wires failed. Drove into Vegas and got some custom ones made and got my bug running again…then went on to Saturday excited and ready! Then found out after Saturday's finish I had about half throttle…
Went into Sunday ready to rock it or roll it. Was pushing hard and started gaining positions!!
Unfortunately Herbee’s bad luck continues as I lost my tranny. I knew right away as the clunking of your ring and pinion is something your heart and mind know all to well. Knew my race was over and pulled off to save my car.
I will, however, be back for the next one and will work just as hard to make sure I finnish that one!

Van Buren Sisters
• 1916 cross-country ride proved to the U.S. military that women were fit to serve as dispatch riders.
• Were the first women to make the transcontinental journey on two solo motorcycles.
Text by Robert Van Buren, photos from the Van Buren Family Collection
Pioneering women motorcyclists Augusta and Adeline
Van Buren rode coast to coast on Indian Power Plus motorcycles in 1916, becoming the first women to ride motorized vehicles to the summit of Pikes Peak along the way. Part of their mission was to convince the military that women were fit to serve as dispatch riders. And although they did not achieve that goal, they clearly proved that
women were capable of far more than society generally allowed them in that era.
Augusta was born March 26, 1884, and Adeline was born July 26, 1889. Descendents of former President Martin Van Buren, the sisters were slender "society girls" out to prove that women could ride motorcycles across the thentreacherous continent, even though they still did not have the right to vote.
The sisters were raised in New York City along with their brother, Albert, and enjoyed an energetic upbringing characterized by canoeing, swimming, skating, diving, wrestling, and sprinting. It’s not surprising that they also took up motorcycling.
Their lives were marked by a series of accomplishments. They were bright, enthusiastic, and refused to be held down by the limitations that society placed on women of that era.
Being intelligent young women, they prepared for their transcontinental journey carefully. Their intent had a dual purpose. The National Preparedness Movement was an effort to get ready for the inevitable entry of the United States into World War I. Augusta and Adeline felt that women could help in a direct manner by becoming dispatch riders, freeing up men to provide combat support. This would remove one of the primary arguments for denying women the right to vote – women were historically nonparticipants in war efforts. They would have to prove this point by showing, without a shadow of a doubt, that a woman could handle the difficulties of motorcycling over long distance and harsh conditions. Thus, before superhighways, and paved roads for the most part, their plan was conceived.
the model with the “webbed vanadium steel Cradle Spring frame,” Indian’s top of the line bike in that period, selling for $275. They also ran
First, they incrementally accumulated long distance rides in New York, and then set off on their journey on July 4, 1916. They left from Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn and trekked west through Chicago and Omaha aboard their Indians equipped with gas headlights. The Power Plus was
with Firestone tires, and enjoyed success with both the bikes and the tires.
The journey got difficult, especially since they were arrested numerous times in the small towns west of Chicago, not for speeding but for wearing men’s clothes. They were dressed in leathers, and after reaching an understanding with the law, they were allowed to push on with their trip.
Technical difficulties were encountered in crossing both the Rockies and the western deserts. The sisters were the first women to summit Pike’s Peak on any kind of motorized vehicle. The road to the summit was dangerous, rising to
14,109 feet, but for Gussie and Addie it was just another challenge. Next they headed west out of Colorado Springs, through Gilman and on to Grand Junction. They fell off their bikes many times, the result of fatigue, ruts, or in some cases, heavy mud. The locals often would come to their aid, retrieving their bikes if they were inextricably stuck.
They arrived in San Francisco on September 2 after some hazardous experiences in the deserts west of Salt Lake, including nearly running out of water. They completed their journey on September 8 after arriving in Los Angeles. Just for good measure, they decided to continue to Tijuana for a final crossing of the border.
After this series of accomplishments, and after proving their competence, Adeline’s application to the military as a dispatch rider was rejected. The coverage in the media
of the day, although adequate in many respects, lacked the recognition that they had earned and so rightfully deserved. Articles in the premier motorcycling magazine of the day praised the bike, but not the sisters. Their historical achievement was described as a vacation, rather than the pilgrimage that it was.
Both Augusta and Adeline eventually married and pursued their lives. There is little evidence about whether they continued riding, but they did continue to be pioneers. Adeline, initially an English teacher, eventually earned her law degree from NYU. Augusta became a pilot, flying with the women’s flying group founded by Amelia Earhart, called the 99s.
Augusta and Adeline Van Buren broke the stereotypes of their time proving that woman could do anything a man could do. In the words of Augusta, “Woman can if she will.”
They were inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2002.

Chuckwalla
We first heard about a proposed National Monument in the California desert last December called Chuckwalla National Monument. This proposal would go from east of Palm Springs to the southeast and cover 660,000 acres in a sort of oval. The proposal is backed by Congressman Raul Ruiz, who has east Riverside and Imperial Counties in his district. The congressman wants this to happen and he has both introduced a bill to do it (HR5660) and has asked President Biden to use the Antiquities Act to designate it.
While some people champion this idea, many don't like it at all. There are around 100 small scale miners with claims in the proposed area and, while their claims will still be active, they would have to go through expensive environmental analysis to continue. These are people working with hand tools. People who enjoy looking for interesting minerals (rock hounds) would likely be limited and the famous Hauser Geode Beds fall inside the
proposed boundary. Most important to us, the route network in the proposed area would be subject to the creation of a new management plan. Such a plan could very likely reduce opportunities out there.
This proposal is designed to "protect" the desert. Our problem with it is the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan looked at the entire BLM California desert area and decided where land will be protected, used for recreation, used for renewable energy and transmission. This DRECP was a big deal, took years and millions of dollars to create and when it was completed, received no litigation. This proposed monument breaks the DRECP deal all the stakeholders had. The BLM Desert Advisory Council does not like this proposal at all and has written a strongly worded letter condemning it and sent it up the BLM ranks. The letter can be seen on the SDORC home page https://sdorc.org/
From the BLM BLM adopts categorical exclusions to expedite geothermal
energy permitting
WASHINGTON – To improve permitting of geothermal energy exploration on public lands, the Bureau of Land Management today adopted two existing categorical exclusions from the United States Forest Service and the Department of the Navy. The categorical exclusions will enable the agency to expedite the review and approval of geothermal exploration proposals.
The problem with this is there is hot water, possibly of geothermal quality, under Ocotillo Wells and a large portion of Ocotillo Wells has BLM subsurface (mineral rights) ownership. We have know this for a long time, but are disturbed that these new categorial exclusions could make it easier to develop there. A few years ago we commented on the DRECP that geothermal should not be allowed in Ocotillo Wells, but were overruled. There is a geothermal project moving forward in the very northeast part of Ocotillo Wells, where there are no legal routes or areas. We will keep our eyes open for this and any lithium projects and will sound the alarm if needed.
Candidates
At our next membership meeting May 7th at Ranch House Restaurant we will have State Assembly candidates Kristie Bruce-Lane and Carl Demaio coming to speak. SDORC has already endorsed Andrew Hayes for Assembly, but we would like to hear what these candidates have to offer. Hayes and Demaio are running for the 75th district while Kristie Bruce-Lane is running for the 76th district.
Idaho
The BLM in Idaho is forming new travel management plans and one of them is particularly bad. The plan covers approximately 251,000 acres of BLM-managed lands and analyzes 1,365 miles of routes inventoried by the BLM. The range of action alternatives being considered would designate between 462 to 808 miles of motorized routes for public use. The amount of proposed closure is staggering, and I am happy with the harsh comments we have submitted. I will let our comments do the talking: I would like to comment on the
Grand View Travel Management Plan Environmental Assessment on behalf of the San Diego Off Road Coalition. Some of our members travel to Idaho to ride these routes and we are quite disturbed by the massive trail closures proposed in this plan.
The plan talks about soil erosion as a justification for closing routes and uses the K factor of soil as a determining factor. While K factor is an important part, it is not the entire story for soil erosion. The Universal Soil Loss Equation predicts the average annual soil loss "A" per unit area.
The equation is A = R x K x L x S x C x P. The plan area has an average rainfall of 11.5". This is so little that, together with the other factors, means that erosion is minor. To use K factor as a justification for closing routes is unjustified. The BLM will need to show the complete Universal Soil Loss Equation for each part of each route closed by this. Why this is even a factor? Please explain. Many of the trails in the TMA are narrow sandy water channels. When it rains enough for the water to flow, the sand will
move downstream, whether or not dirt bikes have been through there. Dirt bike use in these channels will have no effect on K factor of soil and should not be used as a justification to close routes. We look at the Grand Canyon with awe, yet we forget it was created by erosion. So what if a few dirt bikes cause a little erosion.
In the background section of the EA, it mentions "In Owyhee County, Idaho, alone, OHV registration increased 258% between 1998 and 2014." So, with a large increase in OHV registrations near the management area, the BLM finds it necessary to close a large percentage of routes? The BLM should be looking at ways to increase the number of routes and mileage to accommodate the influx of users, not restrict them. The best way to reduce impacts to routes is to increase the number and length of routes, not reduce them. On the topic of increased users, reducing access will have the effect of increasing environmental impacts as well as reducing safety. The BLM needs to not close these routes, but instead work to
designate more new routes.
If voting for an alternative is useful, we vote for alternative "A", as it has the most trail mileage. While that may not be useful, the BLM must create another alternative that has much more route mileage. With more users and fewer routes, the impacts on open routes may become unacceptable, resulting in more closures. This circle of action may result in all routes being closed. This does not reflect the multiple use mandate at all and must be
redesigned. The BLM must reverse this closure process and manage the routes currently there, as well as open new routes.
Special status species is an interesting excuse to close routes. Special status species are not threatened or endangered and should not be used as an excuse to close routes. The Endangered Species Act has lists of threatened and endangered species. The plan and alternatives must list what threatened or endangered species are causing what routes to
be closed. Evidence of the routes(s) causing direct harm to listed species must be cited in the alternatives. Species noted as "special status" have no legal justification and should not be used to justify closing of any routes. All alternatives must be reconfigured to remove special status species from justifying route closures.
From page 45 of the plan: "The effects of route density on wildlife vary by species; however, areas with route density greater than 2.0 mi/mi2 exceed thresholds for many terrestrial
wildlife species (Trombulak and Frissell 2000; Wisdom et al. 2004) and 1.0 mi/ mi2 has been determined to be the maximum threshold for a naturally functioning landscape containing sustained populations of large mammals (Forman and Hersperger 1996)." The plan cites (Forman and Hersperger 1996) as justifying the goal to have at maximum 1 mile of route per square mile of land. What the plan does not get right is that study looks at PAVED highways, while the plan is looking at DIRT singletrack trails usually one foot wide in the TMA. So the fact that the BLM is using a study that looks at paved highways to justify route density in the travel management area is wrong. The alternatives must be rewritten to remove this justification.
Alternative D is by far the second best alternative, but it grossly ignores the need for routes for recreation. None of the alternatives (other than A) are adequate and should be redrawn to account for the above comments. Using Forman and Hersperger 1996 to justify closing routes was a crime and should be litigated out of your office. Using K Factor without completing the Universal Soil Loss Equation for each route and showing on the EA is unprofessional. Proposing to close a high percentage of routes while stating that OHV registrations are way up is grossly inconsistent with the facts as well as the BLM's multiple use mandate. BLM, please reformulate the alternatives using good science and showing your work. These alternatives are unfair to off highway vehicle users and have been created in an unprofessional manner.
Events
We had a highway cleanup recently and filled up 46 bags with trash. We are doing this to get our signs back up. Caltrans mistakenly thought we didn't want the section any more and took them down. Have you seen our orange signs by Buckman Springs exit off Highway 8?

The DP4 races are always such a blast, this race was definitely one for the books! Me and my co-driver were putting down some fast laps until we had some mechanical issues. My power steering fan completely came loose from the frame causing me to completely lose power steering for an entire lap! That fourth lap was so hard without any power
steering. Once we made it back to pits the pit crew jumped right one it and got it welded up for us to go back out for the last lap! We made a slower last lap with the power steering not being completely fixed. Even with all of that I’m always happy to say I finished! Thanks to my awesome pit crew and family! See you at the next one!

COMMON BREAKDOWNS
ATom Severin 4x4
Coach
student recently emailed asking for advice on how to perform certain repairs while off road. After responding, I realized that others could benefit from similar information. Handling breakdowns is one of the top fears expressed among my 4WD students.
It’s impossible to cover every scenario in an article like this, but we can review the more common ones.
Mitigation
Let’s start by mitigating the breakdowns. Four-wheeling is often tough on a vehicle. Regular inspection allows you to catch some issues before you hit the trails.
Inspect the vehicle thoroughly every few trips.
Checks hoses, brakes, control arms, tie rod ends, all suspension bolts, fluids and the serpentine belt. Look for leaks and things hanging down. Look for bright spots where
Premier Welder in LJsomething might be rubbing. Same thing for hoses: Lift them up and look to see if they are rubbing. Add, protect, repair or replace as needed. See my related article here: www.4x4training.com/w/inspect-your-vehicle-100-times/
Bailout Help
Contacts. Record important information specific to the trip. While some people record in an electronic device, I prefer writing this down. An electronic device can break, be lost or stolen, or lose power. The list should include:
• Ham repeaters near the destination (if you’re licensed, of course). Even better, program the frequencies into your radio to save valuable time.
• Local hospitals and gas stations. Make sure you know what type of fuel each gas station sells. Some remote stations have only one grade of gas and diesel.
• Area auto supply stores, service stations and, and hours of operations.
• Towing companies
In addition, buy extended-distance towing coverage. AAA offers a 200-mile plan, but other options are available. And pack a second copy of the vehicle’s key. If you’re ever immobilized, a buddy can drive out your vehicle.
Always drive with someone else. A fundamental of four-wheeling but sometimes ignored. Additional vehicle(s)
and driver(s) can help if you’re stuck or disabled. Someone in those vehicles may know how to fix the problem. Either way, the additional help comes in handy if necessary in the event of a medical emergency.
Take tools and spare parts, fluids. Pack a simple tool kit along with spare parts. Fluids to pack include engine oil, gear oil, ATF, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. More on this in the related article found here www.4x4training. com/w/mechanic-tools-for-4-wheeling/
Acquire basic mechanical skills. Become familiar with your vehicle by performing some of the repairs yourself. This is a great confidence builder, and will pay off if you have a breakdown while on the trails.
Mechanical Sympathy (the art of preserving your vehicle)
Drive carefully. What I call finesse. If you get stuck, for example, don’t try to force it by revving the engine. Rock the vehicle with gentle forward and backward motions. Engage the wheel lockers and try to back out. If these steps don’t work, ask another driver to pull you out. Heck, there are a dozen spots up ahead where you can break it. No need to do it now. More info here: www.4x4training.com/w/ mechanical-sympathy-damage-mitigation/
Some common problems and how to solve them
Any number of things can go wrong with a vehicle. When you have a breakdown, your goal is to get the vehicle moving again so it can be driven home. The following remedies will do that but aren’t permanent solutions.
Get the vehicle moving. If you can get it rolling and there is no significant damage, someone can pull it out.
Because it’s a four-wheel drive vehicle, you have two axles at your disposal. If only one axle is working, engage that one to drive out. I’ve driven home many times on just one axle, whether the front or rear.
Remove the damaged drive shaft and use the other axle. If you remove the rear drive shaft and it does not have a slip joint eliminator, you need to plug the output shaft of the t-case.
Remove a broken front axle or half shaft so it doesn’t hang up. Turn on the front lockers if you have them as needed. Remove the u-joint and put the stub axle (short end) back on the wheel bearing. Without the stub axle in place the inner and outer bearings will not be held in place with bad results. To remove the front axle nut you need a 36 mm socket for TJ’s and a 35 mm socket for JK/ JL. A TJ requires 175 ft.-lb. of torque so it will not be easy to get it off in the field. The Hi-Lift® handle on the end of a breaker bar helps. A JK/ JL requires 100 ft.-lb. (much easier). When you put it back, just do your best to put on the required torque.
Steering and Braking
Two things you need to be sure you can do is steer and brake.
Bent tie rod. Remove the tie rod so it can be straightened. Start by removing the cotter key and loosening the castle nut (but leaving it in place). Using two hammers, slam each side of the steering knuckle simultaneously until the tie rod comes off. You leave the castle nut on so the tie rod doesn’t fall and hit you in the head.
With the tie rod off you can now straighten it. Slam it on a rock in the opposite direction until the rod straightens up sufficiently.
You can also use the Hi-Lift® jack with a chain. Even straightened, however, many tie rods are hollow and once bent are very weak. It’s a good idea to sleeve it for extra strength. The Hi-Lift’s jack handle works great, but any pipe of the proper size is fine.
You need to take one tie rod end off to slide the Hi-lift handle on. Count the exposed threads first so you can put it back about the same place (the rod will have a wave that makes it a bit shorter). I use my dune flag to measure ‘toein’. Use the seam in the middle of the tires to measure the distance between the front tires. First on the front and then the back behind the axle. Set the ‘toe-in’ at about 1/16 inch wider at the rear of the tire. This will get you home.
An additional note about tie rods and tie rod ends. Some drivers upgrade to specific, proprietary brands. Those are sold in select retailers. If one breaks while on the trail, you can’t count on finding a replacement at a chain auto parts store. Consider taking along an extra.
Minor leak in power steering. Replace with power steering fluid and monitor frequently. If you don’t have power steering fluid, use ATF fluid. Fix the issue and replace that bottle when you return home.
Brakes
The most common problems are breaking a brake line that catches on something and pinching it in a coil spring. A spare brake line is nice. If not, make a small fold in the hard line and pinch it off with vice grips. Replace lost brake fluid and drive home with three brakes and the vice grips still pinching the line.
Track Bar
A loose, disconnected, or broken track bar has a major impact on steering. The most common failure is the bolt on the axle end falls off. Carry spare bolts and tighten up a loose bolt.
Without a track bar all your steering wheel does is move the body. It has no effect on the wheels.
On the most recent Rubicon trip, we encountered a vehicle that had broken out a chunk of the frame with the track bar bracket intact. This is unusual. The only solution was to weld it back in place.
Some Other Stuff
Burst radiator or heater hose. Repair with Rescue Tape and refill the radiator. Rescue Tape is strong, doublesided silicone tape. Clean the area as best you can. Wrap the hose tightly (like electrical tape) starting one to two inches from the tear. Continue on past for another one to two inches.
Refill the radiator as needed. If you don’t have coolant, use water. That will get you home. If you use only water (no coolant), keep the radiator cap loose so the system doesn’t come up to pressure.
Computer
On newer vehicles, a reboot is worth a try just like all the other electronic stuff we have. Remove the battery cable and wait 10-15 minutes. There might be any number of gadgets that need to discharge. The early JK’s responded well to this treatment.
Auxiliary battery on JL
On the JL there is an auxiliary battery that runs the A/C, radio, etc. when you stop and the engine shuts down. The service manager told me the small auxiliary battery was good for about two years. If the battery fails on the trail and
you can’t start the engine, you need to bypass the auxiliary battery and feed juice from the main battery to the circuits it controls. Jump post #1 to post #2. This will make sense if you look at the row of posts next to the main battery. Now might be a good time to make up a jumper cable with #2 battery cable.
A breakdown can occur during any four-wheeling trip. Knowing that, take steps to minimize the possibility. Start with a good inspection and maintenance regimen. Pack the right tools, along with fluids and spare parts. Always drive with others so they can help you when needed. You don’t need a major fix while out there. Just enough to get you home.

Yamaha To Be Presenting Sponsor of 2024 Permco
AMA
Vintage Motorcycle Days
Legendary motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha will be the Presenting Sponsor of the 2024 Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, which will occur July 26-28, 2024, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
“AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days carries extra weight this year with it being the key celebration of the AMA’s 100th anniversary, and having Yamaha as the presenting sponsor makes perfect sense as they conclude their yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of the legendary YZ,” said AMA Director of Marketing & Communications Joy Burgess.
Yamaha, initially founded in 1887, began producing motorcycles in 1955 with the YA-1 motorcycle. Since then, Yamaha has grown into one of the largest motorcycle
manufacturers in the world, while fostering a healthy community of vintage Yamaha riders.
This is the first year Yamaha will serve as the Presenting Sponsor of the three-day event, and the brand is planning many exciting activities and looks forward to being at the event as the AMA celebrates its centennial.
“Yamaha looks forward to being a part of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days as the presenting sponsor,” said Jennifer Davie, Motorsports Experiential Marketing and Events Manager. “As we conclude our yearlong celebration of 50 years of the Yamaha YZ, we’re excited to put a bow on those efforts by celebrating with the AMA and their 100th anniversary celebration and the thousands of vintage motorcycle enthusiasts that attend the event.”
Yamaha will be on site with historic bikes, street and ADV demo rides, and will have a variety of Yamaha champions — many of them AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers — to sign autographs and engage with fans at the event.
As the AMA celebrates its 100th anniversary, 2024 Permco AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days presented by Yamaha is expected to be the biggest celebration of the vintage motorcycling lifestyle yet. Featuring vintage road and offroad racing, the biggest motorcycle swap meet in North America, bike shows and vendor displays and much more, there will be a little something for everybody at VMD this year.
For more information on Yamaha, visit its website at yamaha-motor.com. Head to vintagemotorcycledays. com/ or follow the VMD social media channels on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on all things Vintage Motorcycle Days.

Kyle Peters Ties AMA Arenacross
Record with Fifth-Consecutive Championship
The 2024 AMA Arenacross series wrapped up on March 29 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, where Kyle Peters rode the Phoenix Racing Honda CRF250R to his fifth-consecutive title. The achievement ties a record held by past Arenacross greats Dennis Hawthorne and Buddy Antunez, who won their last crowns in 1990 and 2001, respectively.
Each of the Greensboro, North Carolina, native's crowns has come in different ways. He dominated last year's championship, clinching it with two rounds remaining, despite having to overcome a broken neck suffered the previous off-season. Conversely, this year was hard-fought since the December 1 opener in Boise, Idaho. Peters faced adversity including crashes, run-ins with other riders, an injured thumb, and severe anxiety from selfimposed pressure to win. In addition, title-rival Ryan Breece opted to compete aboard a 450cc machine, a decision (allowed by the rules) that turned out to be an advantage given that several of the tour stops were held at elevation. In the end, Peters still managed to take his fifth crown, with just a fivepoint margin.
"They're all special and have their special meaning in their own way, but this one was definitely the toughest on me, mentally, just from all the adversity I faced," said Peters, who turned 31 in early April. "Things didn't really seem to be going my way, and I always kind of felt like I was on my back foot. It was really tough, and a few rounds from the end, I was thinking, 'It's not looking good.' Thankfully, Lord willing, I was able to get it done, and to pull through was amazing."E
