Sherri's Turn Revisted

This article originally appeared in March 2011

T

he big question of the day is "What is it about an old motorcycle that makes a grown man giddy with excitement?" Some time ago we had big plans for a day out. That is a day without work, without all the usual hustle and bustle of our lives and a day without the motor-mouth four-year-old granddaughter who came into our lives on a permanent basis a couple years ago. We actually had a babysitter lined up and we were going to spend all day that Saturday just having fun.

That was until the 1969 Kawasaki 238 showed up for sale on the internet. That was the day that all non-motorcycle communication ceased. He was already working on three of his own bikes, each one of them in various stages of teardown in addition to the Yamaha flattrrack project he was building for his friend Jack. But when he saw the 238 his face lit up at this rare find and he was immediately firing off emails to Jack, who had recently decided that he too needed to acquire as many vintage motorcycles as possible. Sure enough, Jack was interested and gave him the goahead to negotiate a deal. It was early on a Tuesday morning and we were getting ready to head out for the day with our first destination a couple of hours away to pick up the next issue of the magazine from the printer. But before we could leave, the guy-in-the-garage was on the phone trying to start the deal for the Kawasaki. He had to leave a message. Which was the start of our problems that day. "Did you forward the phone to the cell?" he asked. "Yes." "Do you have the phone with you?" he asked. "Yes." "Did you turn it on?" he asked. "Yes."

It would be an understatement to say this guy was excited about this find. And unfortunately I'm the one who is in charge of the phone when we're out together, but admittedly I don't always do a great job of knowing where the phone is. We set out from our desert home/office to the big city and I started off with the phone in my hand so I would be able to quickly answer it when the big call came. But as is often the case eventually the phone was not in my hand anymore. That is the interesting part about me trying to keep track of the phone. I don't ever exactly recall what I do with it, but somehow it goes from being right at my fingertips to me not having a clue where it is. Riding along shotgun, I felt something funny and heard something too. It wasn't loud and it wasn't a big feeling, but I knew something had just happened and I wasn't sure what. I looked at the guy-in-the-garage and he didn't seem to notice anything. Must be nothing, I decided. Wrong thing to think. The guy-in-the-garage was really antsy about getting the return phone call about the motorcycle. We were in and out of service areas as we drove from the desert, through the mountains, to the city, so I didn't think anything about the phone not ringing. But as we got into a full service area it suddenly occurred to me that I really didn't know where the phone was, and if it rang and I couldn't find it, we'd have a big war on our hands.

www.ceetracing.com So I discreetly started looking around for the phone. The last thing I wanted was for him to know what I was doing. But since we've been through this same scenario hundreds of times he caught on instantly. I tried to ignore his "helpful" comments about what I should do with the phone as I kept searching. Thankfully a fuel stop gave me the opportunity to get out of the truck and really search. That's when I discovered that the funny little sound I heard earlier was the phone slipping down in between the seat and clunking onto the floor under the seat, in a place I never could have reached while we were driving. I triumphantly showed him the phone. He looked disgusted. I returned the look. "You care more about getting a phone call about a rare motorcycle than about keeping me happy!" "So I keep you happy by letting you lose the phone all the time?" he asked. It was hard to stay mad while I was laughing at how absurd that sounded. You're getting the picture that this return phone call was so important to him that I needed to

make sure I did nothing to prevent him from taking this call. So why wasn't I smart enough to leave the phone with him later when I had to go to the bathroom? There we were at the printer, he was loading magazines and I headed off to the ladies room. It had been several hours since he left the message about the motorcycle and the phone hadn't rang all morning. So why is it, the very instant, the one minute in time when I definitely would not want that phone to ring, that it starts ringing? I groan

www.hi-flite-usa.com

and look at it, hoping desperately it's not THE call. No such luck. Quickly I put the guy on hold, scurry out to the guy-in-the-garage and hand him the phone, then rush back to complete my business. Later that night I learn that not only did they seal the deal but they're heading up to Bakersfield on Saturday to pick up the bike. "Saturday?! That's when we're going out," I said. "But that's the only day Ted can go and he really wants to go with me and Jack to get the bike," the guy-in-the-garage says pleading for mercy for the brother-in-law-in-the-garage. He tried to look sad but the ridiculous grin on his face ever since he found the motorcycle just wouldn't go away. How do you argue against such excitement? These three have been riding together since they were kids and it made sense they would all go together to get the newest addition to their vintage collection, especially one so rare. But the way I look at it these guys owe me big time. I gave up an outing when we already had a babysitter lined up, and took a phone call on the toilet of all places. Because the only other option was to die. E

et ready for an adrenalineDigital edition is available in print on Amazon https://amzn.to/3RrrCQ0 fueled extravaganza that brought together thrillseekers from across the Southwest – the epic Havasu Havoc UTV Fest! This off-roading spectacle, held in the picturesque Lake Havasu City from December 1 to 3, was a heart-pounding, tire-spinning, and trail-blazing celebration that left everyone on the edge of their seats. Picture this: 150 off-road enthusiasts from Arizona, California, Utah, Washington, and beyond, converging at the Quality Inn Hotel for a weekend that was nothing short of off-road utopia. With around 70 UTVs revving their engines, the atmosphere was charged with excitement right from the get-go. Friday night kicked off in style with registrations and ride selections, setting the stage for the infamous night ride. A convoy of 40 cars, decked out in vibrant lights, embarked on a 25-mile round trip, cruising past the iconic London Bridge adorned with dazzling Christmas lights. The desert night came alive with the roar of engines and the glow of colorful whips, making it a sight to behold. As the night gave way to Saturday morning, registrations and check-ins ushered in a day of dual adventure. A total of approximately 150 miles of awe-inspiring terrain awaited, featuring everything from narrow canyons to high hilltop trails with panoramic views of Lake Havasu, donkey sightings, rock climbing, and beautiful desert landscapes. The Bunker, a militarythemed oasis in the heart of the desert, provided a unique outdoor experience. Delicious food, live music, and military décor set the stage for an unforgettable pit stop. offering a smorgasbord of fun stops like Founder’s Cabin, Woody’s Cabin, and a large man-made spider along the Arizona Peace Trail. Founder’s Cabin is one of several desert cabins in the area, but it is still in fairly good shape after a local resident fixed up the structure and maintained it in relatively recent years. The cabin used to be called Dollar Cabin, after the tradition of visitors tacking dollar bills with their name on it up on the cabin. The tradition has died down after someone went out there and took all the dollar bills a few years ago. Woody’s Cabin is smaller and a little less fancy than Founders Cabin, but is still worth a look. Saturday night brought everyone together for a mouth-watering dinner hosted by the Quality Inn. The evening was a crescendo of raffles, best and worst poker hands, sponsor 66 66

From the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame

Freddie Marsh Lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, racer, Indian and Moto Guzzi dealer. Hillclimber from 1924 to 1988. Continued to ride into his 100's.

F

reddie Marsh amassed an amateur racing career that lasted longer than many people live. Propelled by a love for motorcycling that persisted even after he surpassed 100 years of age, Marsh raced in seven different decades. He also owned dealerships in Connecticut from 1926 until

the time of his death in 2003. Born in Italy in 1900, Marsh came to the United States with his family while he was still an infant. Like so many other new immigrant families, Marsh's parents struggled to make a living. After his mother died when Freddie was 12,

On that farm, he found the seed of a lifelong addiction in the form of the owner's motorcycle, which Freddie was allowed to ride around the fields and unpaved roads of the 100-acre farm. Those days were his first lessons in finding traction on dirt, and they would pay off many times over the coming decades. Marsh used money he earned by working as a streetcar conductor in Hartford, Connecticut, to buy his first motorcycle, a Harley-Davidson, and later snagged a job at the Harley dealership. In 1922, he built what he described as "a home-brew motorcycle" to race in the 500cc class. Like so many other Harley riders of the time, he took one cylinder off his 1,000cc machine to go racing. In 1926, Indian approached Marsh to see if he was interested in opening a dealership in Hartford. The Springfield, Massachusetts company had already passed its peak, but Indian made an offer Marsh couldn't refuse, so he quit his job at the Harley-Davidson shop and went into business selling Indians. As a dealer, Marsh could get his hands on an Indian race bike. The race bikes of the era were little more than an engine, two wheels and a kill switch. With no brakes or transmission, racers would scrub off speed by hitting the kill switch in the corner. Marsh traveled all over the Northeast racing flat-track. For years after he gave up flat-track racing, Marsh continued to race hillclimbs. He built a variety of hillclimb machines from the Norton, AJS and other brands of machines he sold after Indian stopped producing motorcycles in 1953. Marsh's many years as a dealer and a racer meant that motorcyclists all across the region knew of him. "A lot of guys in their 50s and 60s will tell you they bought their first motorcycle from him," said Leo Castell, editor and publisher of The Motorcyclist's Post, a monthly magazine based in Connecticut. "Freddie's a real institution up here." In his final years, Marsh spent his days at the Moto Guzzi dealership in East Windsor, Connecticut, that was run by his nephew, Allen Marks.

Even after he surpassed 100 years of age, Marsh rode an old, Indian-badged, 50cc scooter. His frail health and failing eyesight meant he was limited to riding laps of the parking lot at his dealership, but he maintained that a regimen of riding 75 laps each morning was what kept him going. Old Iron, one of the unique vehicles spotted at the 2023 Lost Lizard Fun Run

OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER BY SDORC PRESIDENT ED STOVIN WWW.SDORC.ORG

I

'm back from my cross-country ride on the Trans America Trail. I can tell you it's worth doing if you like traveling by motorcycle. I covered 9400 miles in 5 weeks, saw amazing sights and loved it all.

Lost Lizard

We had a great Lost Lizard Fun Run in November with 742 entries and no problems. The route was well marked, the checkpoints super fun and our big raffle went off without a hitch. Schoony's Side X Sides earned the coveted Best Checkpoint award, impressive, as they were drafted into hosting just a couple weeks before the event. We also had great checkpoints with San Diego FJ Cruisers, Tierra Del Sol 4X4 Club, San Diego Jeep Club and Arc Troopers. Look for us next year on November 9th, 2024. 76

Off Road Safety Training and Lobbying

Most of us are aware of the big increase of side by side usage lately and have seen some of the problems associated with them. While most are being used responsibly, some of us have seen dangerous driving as well as rude and illegal use. Its been a big enough problem that California State Parks has put on two safety summits to try to get some control of the problem. I attended both, along with other advocates and agency staff from Parks, BLM, National Forests, CHP and others. The agencies are interested because when accidents or bad behavior happen, people look to the agencies for answers. The main topic to improve the situation revolved around education. The question then is, should training be voluntary or mandatory?

The problem with voluntary is it likely doesn't get to the people who need it most. The trouble with mandatory is it forces people who don't need it and prefer not to take it to have it have it. I took the Utah online training, found it painless and even learned a few things. We have been talking to Parks about the possibility of running a safety bill and found a lobbyist we like who could help us. SDORC and CORVA were pretty close to running a bill when Parks backpedaled and said they would like to wait a year. We at SDORC are still interested in hiring a lobbyist and we just voted to hire lobbyist Mark Smith. He will help us sort through the thousands of bills to be introduced this coming year to find ones that may affect off roaders. If we find any, we will support or oppose through the legislative process to benefit our community. I am personally thrilled to be back working on state bills and will keep you updated as we go.

Joshua Tree National Park has limited camping in reserved spots. There is BLM land right next to the park that allows dispersed camping and a lot of park users go there to camp. If the Joshua Tree NP expansion takes place, that land will be added to the park and camping will be lost or highly regulated. We oppose this proposal and will be telling the author's office we don't like it. This proposal is in a Federal bill introduced by Congressman Ruiz, H.R.5660.

The bill is unlikely to pass this year, but Ruiz has stated that he would like President Biden to use the Antiquities Act to designate the monument and expand Joshua Tree National Park.

We’ve ran 1,300 miles and we still have brakes and good suspension. It was also special to race with a Kyle LeDuc sticker in our truck. He was a fantastic person and a better driver, who unfortunately left too soon." Ricky Johnson started and drove to race mile 350. Mike Johnson drove from race mile 350 to race mile 640. First overall motorcycle team led by Juan Carlos Salvatierra. "It feels really good to be at the finish, especially with this being the secondlongest SCORE race ever. It’s great to think we made history here. We had a very eventful week with two of our riders getting injuries and another one getting sick. But we have lions in our team and Shane and Diego had to step up for us and take sections from other riders without prerunning them and did a wonderful job. I couldn’t do my section because I got injured on Friday. The bike was flawless during the entire race. Outside of tire changes and regular maintenance

things, we didn’t have to do anything on it." Juan started and quickly switched to Shane Logan who rode to race mile 175. Corbin McPherson rode from race mile 175 to race mile 350. Luke McMillin, second overall with co-driver Rob MacCachren. "Overall, it was a great SCORE Baja 1000. There were all kinds of terrain, silt, rocks, it was warm down South and a lot cooler up here and we were splashing through water puddles from the last 48 hours. There were a lot of different elements and that’s what the SCORE Baja 1000 is all about. We drove through the entire night and the sun was coming up when we finished. Rob did a great job in the first half of the race. We didn’t have any major issues, but the ones we had held us back a couple of times. But that’s racing and it’s hard to have a clean day here in Baja. The team did a great job and we’re happy to be on the podium. We pushed it a bit harder in the last 100 miles and made up ten or 12 minutes and it was a lot of fun." Rob MacCachren started and drove to race mile 638. ulminating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence, the desert racing ‘Super Team’ of Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies, Mexico’s Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildsola Jr, and San Diego’s A. McMillin, split the driving Thursday and Friday, to capture the BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N, Friday. The race, the culmination of the 50th anniversary of pioneer desert-racing organization SCORE International, started Thursday in La Paz, Baja California Sur for the first time and finished for the 29th time in Ensenada, Baja California. The grueling race covered 1310.94 race miles as the season-finale of the four-race SCORE World Desert Championship and Menzies and his talented team finished the iconic race with a two-minute, three-second margin over another Dream Team of San Diego’s Luke McMillin (Andy’s younger cousin) and Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren. Driving their amazing AWD No. 7 Red Bull Ford Raptor SCORE Trophy Truck built by Mason Motorsports, Menzies won for the third consecutive race in 2023 to also earn the SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship. Together, this talented trio covered the unforgiving course in a total time of 22 hours, 35 minutes, 33 seconds with an impressive average speed of 58.03 miles pour hour in this race.

SHOWDOWN

This year’s epic Granddaddy of All Desert Races was a radically rugged run of 1310.94 masterful miles UP Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula, starting for the first time in La Paz, Baja California Sur, and finishing for the 29th time in Ensenada, Baja California. Overall, this legendary event

ran the length of the poetic peninsula for the 25th time in its 56-year history.

DIRTTRAX

When the final checkered flag fell, a total of 335 vehicles left the starting line early Thursday in La Paz, Baja California Sur, in the elapsed time race. When the course officially closed at 12:17:03 p.m. PT on Saturday afternoon, there were 178 official finishers for a solid 53.13 percent finishing rate on the long, extremely challenging race course. The legend grows. Overall, the 335 starters are the seventh-most in the 56-year race history and the 178 finishers are the 12th-most finishers out of five-plus decades of the monstrous event.

MEDALISTS

Mason Motorsports of Lake Elsinore, Calif. swept the podium at this year’s SCORE Baja 1000. Joining Menzies/A. McMillin/Vildosola Jr on the podium, finishing a very close second with the dynamic duo of ‘The Luke’ McMillin, 30, San Diego, and Rob ‘The Goat’ MacCachren, 58, Las Vegas, who finished just one minute, 18 seconds after 1310.94 miles behind Menzies in a penaltyfree time of 22:36:52 in the No. 1 McMillin Racing Chevy 1500, built by Mason Motorsports. Fernando Beltran's team finished first Pro Moto Limited. Co-Rider Mauri Herrera said, "It was a very long race and just making it here to Ensenada is a big achievement for us. Nothing was easy during the last 29 hours, but fortunately we made it here. The entire team did a very good job today. My first section, in Baja Sur, had a lot of fast portions and also a lot of silt. The second section was a bit different, near Catavina, as it was very long and rocky. The bike was excellent, didn’t have any issues at all."

The team led by driver-of-record Kyle Tucker finished first in the Baja Challenge. "We had a great team today. It was a challenge, like everybody had, but it was a great day. We got everything that Baja offers. If it was easy, everybody was going to be here racing. We saw a lot of campfires out there and that’s what makes Baja special. We had some issues there and the locals helped us do what we needed. Thank you SCORE and BFGoodrich Tires for allowing us to do it." Lance Clifford, Andrew Comrie-Picard, Brian Finch and Kyle Tucker split the driving duties.

SALVATIERRA CAPTURES OVERALL MOTO

Bolivian superstar Juan Carlos Salvatierra and his fiverider team overcame a pair of pre-running injuries to earn Salvatierra’s first SCORE overall motorcycle race victory on his team’s No. 1x KTM 450SX-F in a winning time of 26:37:17. Salvatierra was one of the injured riders but he mustered enough to start the race in La Paz and ride a short distance before handing off the bike. Salvatiera, 42, had a team of four riders doing the bulk of the work in Shane Logan, 21, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Argentina’s international rally racer Diego Llanos, 30, Carter Klein, Agua Dulce, Calif., and Corbin McPherson, 22, Hurricane, Utah. Starting first and leading the entire race, Salvatierra and his talented team finished in a time of 26:33:41, just over 13 minutes ahead of the 3x Husqvarna FE450 team led by Ciaran Naran, 23, Huntington Beach, Calif., in a time of 26:52:37.

Andy McMillin drove from race mile 525 to race mile 925. Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr drove from race mile 925 to the finish.

CLASS 1 SUPERLATIVE

In his second season as the driver of record after over a decade as the team’s second driver, Kyle Quinn, 36, Lakewood, Calif., led a Wilson Motorsports team to victory in the unlimited Class 1. Quinn was the primary driver for the No. 100 Wilson Motorsports Chevy-powered Jimco openwheel desert race car. Defeating a field of 11 starters in Class 1, splitting the driving with Quinn were John Herder, 54, Tucson, Ariz., and Greg Distefano, 53, San Diego. Quinn repeated his class win from last year’s SCORE Baja 1000 and the team overcame its 2023 struggles to earn its first finish and first win of the season.

‘MINI MAC’ TOPS UTVS

Being son of the G.O.A.T. of off-road racing (Rob MacCachren), Las Vegas’ third-generation desert racer Cayden MacCachren, 21, has clearly stepped away from his famous father’s tracks and is forming his own trail in desert racing. He capped his first season with the new four-vehicle Polaris Factory team by winning his Pro UTV Open class as well as being the fastest of 54 UTVs in four different classes in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000.

2024 AMA Hall of Fame Days To heRun Oct. 10-13 American Motorcyclist Association will celebrate the

definition, an off-road race usually in the desert and on unimproved terrain over a marked course with a minimum distance of 60 miles. It can be either point-to-point or run over at least two loops, the majority of each loop run only once. A hare scrambles, on the other hand, “…is conducted over a closed course, using trails and paths over natural terrain. These races are run for either a specified number of laps or leader’s overall time; for the Pro/AA race, this is two and a half to three hours. Hare scrambles tend to be on tighter trails in the woods on courses 10-15 miles long. Since 2015, Meg Argubright and Jacob Michna have captained the NHHA, Argubright serving as Chairman and Michna the Race Director. Since then, the duo have grown and evolved both series’ into a consistent, professional, modern experience for racers, spectators and sponsors alike. Most recently, Argubright acquired NHHA ownership in early 2023, alongside Michna. Change is, however, inevitable and after eight years of continued innovation and growth in both series, Jacob Michna

It’s Never A Good Idea To Split The Group Tom Severin

4x4

O

ne of the fundamental tenants of four-wheeling is to always travel with at least one other vehicle. Meaning, of course, never go four-wheeling alone. Bad things can happen, even during nice weather in a seemingly benign area. But sometimes it’s necessary for a vehicle to leave the group. Implementing the proper steps will help those four-wheelers return safely.

Why drivers leave a four-wheeling excursion

There are several reasons why a driver would leave. 1. Need part(s) for a vehicle. Four-wheeling is tough on a vehicle, resulting in unexpected failure. If replacement parts aren’t on hand, someone needs to drive into town. Ditto for getting more gas. see Don’t Be A Fool, Stop For Fuel! (https://www.4x4training. com/w/dont-be-a-fool-stop-for-fuel/) 2. Somebody needs medicine or suffers an illness or injury. If it’s not a life-threatening situation, a trip to town should resolve the situation. A small cut on the forehead bleeds profusely but is not life-threating. However, I recommend a trip to town for stiches so it heals up without a scar – unless it is a guy. 90

3. A participant simply wants to leave; quits the trip. For example, wasn’t prepared for a cold night. Another possibility is that a someone received a call and has to tend to a situation at home.

What to do if you need to split the group

If a group has to split up, make careful arrangements to ensure the safe departure or return of those who are expected back. Some suggestions for making those arrangements. 1. As noted above, always send at least one additional vehicle if they are returning. Don’t send the person off on their own. If they get stuck, break down along the way, or get lost, that person could be in real trouble. Have two vehicles escort a departing vehicle. The four-wheeling spirit is high and most other drivers view it as an adventure to accompany a departing or returning vehicle. 2. A better solution not involving a second vehicle is to depart near a well-known road. Don’t send them on their way in the middle of nowhere. Find a paved, marked road to split up – even if it means backtracking on the route. During one excursion a driver stated he wanted to head home early. I told him that is possible during the first two days but not afterward. Early on we were near a paved road. After that, we would be traveling on rough, rocky, dirt trails. It would be too difficult to find his way out. The driver chose to leave early. 3. Drive until you’ve reached that day’s campsite. Those leaving (including a second vehicle) are then familiar with the location of camp and should be able to find it upon their return.

Trying to find a campsite the middle the night, in print on Amazon https://amzn.to/3RrrCQ0 Digitalinedition isofavailable even with way points, can be difficult. Night changes all your reference points and sense of distance. Have the drivers proceed to that location first, then depart for town. 4. If, after providing first aid, someone needs medical attention, determine the level of seriousness. If really serious, you may need to end the trip and have everyone escort the person to definitive medical treatment. Otherwise, make sure the departing group has instructions to the nearest clinic or hospital. I carry an emergency packet for all my excursions. That includes a map and directions to the clinic or hospital (along with phone numbers). Make sure your directions take the person directly to the medical facility, not just to the edge of town. 5. Devise contingency plans for all vehicles whether leaving or returning. Provide instructions on where the departing parties will link up with the main group later. For example, you could tell them to meet at campsite X The class uses very realistic simulations. on the expected day and time. In the event they’re delayed, the instructions will state where to link up later.
