I

Reprinted from February 2017

don't ride. But I’m madly in love with a guy who does ride. The guy-inthe-garage. When he’s not in his shop working on his motorcycles he might be out riding one of them. He was riding the day I met him. I was 16 and lived across the street from Brown Hill, a popular riding area for the local hot shoes. That’s how I first heard about him. Other kids in the neighborhood talked about this crazy motorcycle riding nut. And I figured this nut must need a girlfriend. But the fact is the topic today isn’t

really about the guy-in-the-garage. It’s about all the other guys in garages across the nation. The guys who, like this one I’m married to, are passionate about their motorcycles. Or maybe another type of off road vehicle. It’s a passion that runs so deep it’s as vital to them as the blood that flows through their veins. It’s their life. In the decades we’ve been together I’ve discovered a sad fact about off road marriages and that is not all married guys have a spouse who fully and completely supports their love of motorcycles or any other type of off road vehicle. In my years of observing, I have categorized wives in four different ways: A. Those who love riding as much as the guys; B. Those, like me, who don’t ride but completely support the passion of their husbands; C. Those who don’t mind their husband riding but really don’t want anything to do with it and won’t go to the desert or the track with them; and D. Those who may occasionally tolerate their riding but view it as a very low priority, almost to the point that the husband has to resort to lying to be able to pursue his passion; or worse has to give it up completely.

So today I’m speaking to and about the wives who fall into the letter D category. What do you have to give up if you move into category B or maybe even A? Some money missing from the bank account? Some activities of your own there isn’t time for? Some projects around the house not getting done? That’s most likely the worry and it’s possible those things may very well happen. But if those things happen, is that really the end of the world? Maybe you might feel it’s the end of your happiness but have you taken into account it might just lead to the beginning of your husband’s true happiness? Let’s look at what else you have to lose. The arguments. The lying. The sneaking around. The lack of enthusiasm on his part, the lack of joy and happiness as he’s been forbidden – yes forbidden since some wives actually wield that much power and authority in the home – to pursue his passion. A passion that is not unique just to your husband, but one that is shared by thousands, even hundreds of thousands across this nation and around the world. Maybe even millions if you take into account all of the generations who have gone before us. The April 2011 edition of Smithsonian Magazine writes: “A century ago,

www.ceetracing.com Americans fell in love with speed. While the Wright Brothers flew overhead and Model T’s rolled off Henry Ford’s assembly line, the new sport of motorcycle racing began drawing large crowds bent on celebrating a piston-powered future.”1 Unfortunately mixed in with this rich history of motorcycle loving fanatics there is also a history of the type of wife who felt it her bound duty to prevent the pursuit of the passion. In this same article we read about Ashley Franklin Van Order, a livery worker who loved motorcycles so much that in 1911 he relocated from Illinois to Southern California so he could ride his motorcycle year-round. “Van Order took a job selling HarleyDavidsons and began riding competitively, but his racing career was cut short soon afterward by an accident, followed by an ultimatum. ‘His wife, Lilly, told him that if he ever rode again, she was out of there,’ says Van Order’s grandson.”2 He turned to photography to fulfill his motorcycle passion and eventually amassed the most complete photographic history of early motorcycle racing from the early 1900’s in existence. But how sad that within just a few years of motorcycles and motorcycle racing being invented, there were already wives

interfering in the pursuit of the passion for their husbands. My goal in life in the very early days was to be the wife in Category A. In our dating years and early married life, I imagined myself riding often and riding well, reaching the skill level that would allow me to enjoy rides with the guy-inthe-garage. I imagined myself racing and winning races. But after a number of years of attempting to reach this goal I discovered something else. My imagination was much more adventurous and courageous than my actual self was. And finally I reached a point where I could comfortably admit to myself and others that I was really a big chicken and my greatest joy came from supporting the guy-in-the-garage in his riding passion and even more fun, watching him when he is racing. One Christmas Day a few years back we had a couple of young adult visitors who dropped in at our desert home for Christmas breakfast after a morning ride. The topic came up about girlfriends and motorcycles. “Do what you want and just lie to them,” was the advice one had received from his boss in the event you have a girlfriend or wife who doesn’t see the value in a day spent riding. Surprisingly when I told the boys I had a couple of pieces of advice for them about

www.hi-flite-usa.com

marriage, they actually seemed interested in hearing what I had to say. First, don’t ever lie to your wife and second, don’t marry someone you would have to lie to about motorcycles. They received the advice enthusiastically. We finished breakfast, they drove off with their muddy bikes in the back of a muddy truck, stomachs full and a host of wonderful Christmas memories revolving around motorcycle riding in the desert filling their hearts. The hope is whatever the future holds for them in the way of relationships it will include a love of motorcycles that doesn’t have to be hidden or denied. Yes, I’m madly in love with a guy who rides. And madly in love with his motorcycles too. Because his motorcycles are his life. How could I not love them if I love him the way I do? It’s the big question of the day. And if you’re a wife D, I encourage you to set a goal this year to move up to category B. You might just discover a new joy in life you never knew existed. E _________________________________

t the start of the 2023 season we had a new car, a new build, and a third place in the first race of the year in Parumph, Nevada. We had a few little mechanical problems as it was a new build, but were feeling like nothing was going to stop us. The second race of the year was coming up, the Baja Nevada, a 611 mile marathon. I asked Lacrecia Beurrier to come with us as a back up driver just in case I needed her. But I had trained for it and I wanted to iron woman it. Two days worth of racing and it would be the longest I ever raced. I completed my goal at 54 years old: successfully finishing as an iron woman in the Baja Nevada. Me, myself. I'm very proud of this. I was feeling spunky, happy and very energetic. We were celebrating our fourth place finish and a foot race broke out in the parking lot of the hotel. My husband and I collided and I fell to the ground, tearing my rotator cuff. So after a few days of letting reality set in I headed to the doctor and heard the news I never wanted to hear, I needed surgery to continue doing what I love so much. So I guess surgery it is! I wasted no time getting scheduled, I'm a bit pushy when it comes to these things. Within two weeks I had my first appointments and my surgery scheduled. It was going to be June 30. In my mind that gave me July and August and part of September to

heal. We asked Cody Mitchell to join the team as back-up driver and drive on September 23 in Cedar City, Utah, a 189 mile race and be ready to go for the next in Virginia City, NV on October 21. But in the meantime before those two races, I still had to start the next race in Alamo, Nevada, seven days before my surgery, and go to the first pit, was about 56 miles, to be eligible for the championship points. I got out at my 56 miles and Cody took over. He did a great job and got us a third place at that race and I couldn't be more proud of him.. We now had an even bigger team and we were staying in the points chase. In case you were wondering, no Cody is not related to me, but we now are all Team Mitchell. We are one big happy family. I'm Angie "Klaja" Mitchell: a wife, mom and grandma, although I started as my daddy's daughter. My dad, Walt, had me hunting, fishing, 4x4ing and riding motorcycles by the age of five years old on a Honda 50. So being in the outdoors was always in my life growing up in Parker, Arizona. I started racing when I was 15 years old on a motorcycle, a Honda XR 250. I raced two seasons with Arizona Desert Racing Association and took home a second and a first in the Ladies Bike championship. Then Women's State Champion of Arizona at 15/16. By 17, I raced the 1987 Parker SCORE 400 on a bike in Class 21 (Mens 250)

acing alongside his father at the International Six Days Trials in 1969, Billy Uhl won his first of five ISDT gold medals. At age 19, Uhl was one of the youngest riders ever to win a gold medal. In 1973, he was the topperforming American at the first-ever ISDT in the United States and won the Count Lurani Trophy, for the top performing U.S. rider at the event. After reinvigorating the 60

Idaho State Trail System and beginning the Idaho State Parks Trail Ranger Program, Uhl became the Senior Instructor at OHV Training. He uses his trials experience to educate motorcycle, ATV, and snowmobile riders of all skill levels and teach trail design, building, and maintenance. Uhl was born in Wooster, Ohio, on April 22, 1950. The

The family finally settled in Idaho. His father, Herb, became a motorcycle dealer in Boise in the mid-1950s. Herb was a motorcycle racer. At an early age, Billy followed in his father’s footsteps. At first little Billy rode on the tank of his dad’s bike. Billy started riding at age 8 on a Harley-Davidson 125cc two-stroke. He was so small he had to ride to his parent’s side to be able to stop because his legs couldn’t reach the ground. Later, as he gained confidence, he would start and stop on the side of a hill where he could quickly jump on or off the bike. Later, Billy began racing on a 50cc Honda step-through that his father had modified. Honda used elements of Uhl’s design in its line of small offroad machines in the early 1960s. In his first cross-country race, Billy placed first in his class on the Honda. Racing against adults, Billy moved up the ranks and competed in motocross, trials, TT, hillclimb and dirt track events, turning pro at the age of 17. Uhl became a promising motocross and flat-track racer. He scored well in Trans-AMA 250cc races in 1971 and was a leading novice flat track racer. He was even offered the opportunity to race flat-track with backing from BSA in 1968. However, it was in off-road events that Uhl excelled and he decided to focus his attention there. He won numerous state cross country championships and quickly became considered

one of the top up-and-coming off-road talents in America. His breakthrough came in 1969. He’d become a member of the International Six Days Trials (later changed to the International Six Days Enduro in 1981) as a lastminute substitute for an injured rider. He and Malcolm Smith were the only U.S. riders to score Gold Medals that year in West Germany. Uhl was one of the youngest in the history of the competition to win Gold. Interestingly, Uhl went to the ISDT in Germany in 1969 with his father, who was also on the U.S. squad. They became the first father-son team to compete together and the German press followed them with great enthusiasm.

Uhl climbing a mountain at the '74 ISDT at Camerino, Italy In the road race special test, Billy’s stock Sachs was underpowered. His father realized the plight his son was in and temporarily slowed his more powerful bike to let Billy ride in his draft. That gave Billy the extra speed he needed and it helped him go on to win Gold that year. "That was my first time ever racing in a timed event," Uhl said. "I’d always ridden cross country type events. I wasn’t sure what was going on when I came to my first checkpoint, it was a totally new experience for me." The German spectators in ’69 became fans of Uhl and his father. In the road race special test, the crowd showed their enthusiasm by throwing their hats up in the air as the father-son pair sped by. Uhl returned to the ISDT in 1970 and earned a Bronze. In 1971, Uhl had a good ride going at the Isle of Man ISDT when his Puch broke a motor late in the Six Days. It was the only time he didn’t finish the event. Uhl was named to the U.S. ISDT Trophy team for the first time in 1972. That year in Czechoslovakia, Uhl again won a Gold riding a Penton. The American Trophy Team was given the Watling Trophy that year, awarded for best effort or most improved. The zenith of Uhl’s participation in the ISDT competition came in 1973 when the U.S. hosted the prestigious international competition in Dalton, Massachusetts. That year, riding for the Trophy team, Uhl once again earned Gold and was the top scoring American riding a 125cc Penton. 62

Sadly, his mother passed away while attending the event that year. She had been battling illness and her last wish was to see her son compete in the race on American soil. "That was probably my biggest achievement in racing," Uhl explained. "At the same time it was an incredible low spot in my life with my mother’s passing." In 1975 he was given the Motorcyclist magazine All-Star Award. During the 1970s Uhl began writing a regular column in Cycle News called "Down the Trail with Billy Uhl." Uhl continued participating in the ISDT through 1977, only missing 1975 when Can-Am pulled its support at the eleventh hour. By the 1977 season, he was having serious problems with carpal tunnel syndrome. His last competitive motorcycle racing event was the 1977 Olympiad. After that, he retired from competition and for a time left motorcycling behind. He returned in the mid-1980s when he became active in trail building, design and maintenance as well as off-road riding advocacy. Over the years of building and maintaining hundreds of miles of trails, Uhl developed new trail specifications to design trails that were sustainable and resistant to erosion. Some of his trails remain in great condition decades after they were built. His building methods and designs served as model for other trail builders. "I remember my first season of trail building in the

woods I think I saw three people that entire time," Uhl said. "The areas were so remote and this was before trail riding became so popular." One of the most unusual trails Uhl was asked to build was for the blind to be able to hike and enjoy the outdoors. It is a two-and-a-half mile trail at the top of the mountain that was designed to stimulate the senses with smell, sound and touch. Uhl spent countless hours perfecting the trails by walking it with a blindfold to get at least a feel for what it would be like for blind hikers. As a lifelong advocate for multiple trail use, Uhl also used his leadership status to ensure that the trails remain open for everyone to enjoy. Uhl planted the seed at Idaho State Parks and Recreation that started the successful State Trail Ranger program. In fact, he was the first Trail Ranger in the state. Uhl is also a Master Tread Trainer for the national Tread Lightly!® program which teaches people how to recreate responsibly. "As impressive as his riding skills are, what impresses me even more are his riding ethics," said Terry Sexton a District Ranger for the Jefferson Ranger District in Montana. "He's the Good Will Ambassador for motorized trail riders. Bill has the perfect personality to be a good instructor. His knowledge of riding and trail management, coupled with 64

his common sense teaching style, makes Bill an effective communicator and instructor." Uhl became a popular speaker for off-road enthusiasts groups. He was a major advocate for responsible sound levels and less aggressive tire tread usage for off-road vehicles. Uhl put his years of riding to good use by becoming a senior riding instructor for Off Highway Vehicles. He contracts to train a wide variety of companies (such as cell phone company employees who use off-road vehicles to reach remote cell towers, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Border Patrol employees to name a few), groups and individuals in proper riding techniques. He trains riders of motorcycles, ATVs and snowmobiles. In 2002, Gas Gas invited Uhl to race in the Idaho ISDE qualifier and after years of not competing, and despite being terribly out of shape, he still showed some of the skills he’d had 25 years earlier. "I couldn’t walk for two days afterwards," Uhl joked. Uhl raised two boys, often taking them on the tank of his motorcycle to trail-building sites like his father had done with him. They both became good riders. Uhl will always be remembered for his ISDT accomplishments and for his vast contributions to off-road motorcycling. He was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2007.

OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER - BY SDORC PRESIDENT ED STOVIN

Lobbyist and Bills

B

ecause our lobbyist is new to off road vehicles, we recently had a call to explain what types of bills we are looking for. Bills are being introduced until February 16th and we expect to see about 50 bills that could affect us. We are interested in bills having to do with transportation, State Parks and natural resources. In past years, out of the 50 or so bills, we found about 10 we wanted to keep an eye on in case amendments come that could affect us and two or three bills that do affect us we carefully monitor through the process. I saw an article in Cycle News about the red sticker bill, SB708, that was held in a committee last year. Held means the committee chair chose not to let the bill be voted on. That 72

stopped it last year, but it may come back this year and since the committee chair was changed this year, it is possible the bill could live on. It could also be reintroduced with possibly changed language and get a new number. SB708 would have State Parks issue a sticker just so these racing motorcycles can be used in competition on public land. I don't believe any OHV safety bills are being introduced, but we won't know for sure until late February. If any are, it will be without the blessing of State Parks and will have a low chance of passing.

Trust Fund and Grants

The California green sticker program is given a little over $60 Million each year by the legislature. While 2024 has already been allocated,

2025 is being worked on. The money is set aside in two parts. About half goes to the State Parks Off Highway Vehicle Division and the nine State Vehicular Recreation Areas and the other half goes to the grants program. For 2025, the division half has been set aside, but the grants were only given $1 Million. I heard from division staff that this has happened before, and the rest of the money will be allocated in May. Still, with the state looking at such a large deficit, we are worried. The majority of grant money goes to the BLM, National Forests, Sheriffs and some important nonprofits. Good thing we have a lobbyist in Sacramento to help us.

Geothermal

I heard that the geothermal test well in the northeast of Ocotillo Wells had shown promise. Of course this has me worried, so I while I was out there, I went to have a look around. I went to the Salton City airport, and I found the test well that was recently drilled. Later, I contacted Ormat, the company interested in a new facility, to

try to learn more about it. I found the investor relations person at Ormat and gave her a call. This area is known as Truckhaven Geothermal, and I found out that they are still deciding if they will move forward. She told me that they refer to it as a "prospect" not a "project" and if they were to move ahead with it, it could take up to four years to break ground. So right now, nothing officially says it is going to happen. We will keep checking and will let you know.

Painted Gorge Road

I drove down Painted Gorge Road in November and noticed a couple of spots that were difficult to pass because of the recent hurricane. Lots of people like to camp towards the end of the road and anything larger than a full-size truck would have a lot of trouble getting by. I was at a meeting with local OHV leadership and Neil Hamada from the BLM was there. When they asked if anyone knows of areas that could use maintenance, I mentioned Painted Gorge Road. Neil said yes, they know about it, but for them to grade the

road they would need an archaeologist Plaster City February 24th. We will to look it over. The problem with that be meeting at Plaster City East, just a little west of Dunaway Road at is their BLM office does not currently 9:00 a.m. We will have pickers, bags, have an archaeologist on staff, in fact snacks, drinks and some giveaways. If other nearby BLM offices don't have you love that part of the desert, help any either. us show the BLM that we value it for So, I asked if an outside group, off road vehicle use. Hope to see you like SDORC, could hire one to do the at the cleanup and at TDS Safari in survey? Neil said yes and gave me a Salton City on March 2nd. E name of a firm that has done work for them in the past. So, I contacted them and asked for a quote. A week Join San Diego Off Road later I got a quote for over $11,000, a Coalition to help protect little too rich for our small nonprofit. I don't blame the BLM for requiring the off road areas survey. That is required because of a www.sdorc.org/join-sdorc/ federally legislated act. I called Neil to tell him about the quote and www.stewartsraceworks.com he said he would contact Imperial County to see if they could repair the road.

How To Drive Safely On Gravel Roads Tom Severin

4x4

Coach

T

he new year is a good time to revisit some fundamentals of four-wheeling. Key among those is how to drive on gravel and dirt roads. After all, fourwheeling necessarily involves driving on unpaved surfaces. First, we’ll look at the hazards. Then we’ll review steps you can take for safer driving on gravel roads.

Hazards of driving on gravel The hazards of driving on gravel are many, and include: Reduced traction: It’s no secret that traction is reduced on gravel, dirt and sand. Vehicles handle differently on these surfaces compared to paved roads. There’s a greater potential for skidding, and stopping distances are greater. Traction is also reduced on ‘washboard’ trails. Plus, the pounding effect takes its toll on the drive train and other parts. 84

Road use often limited to one lane: Drivers tend to drive down the center of gravel roads. That’s smart, as it keeps the vehicle away from the gravel berms often found along the shoulder. More on that in a bit. The danger lurks in the form of drivers coming from the opposite direction doing the same. Sight is restricted on curves and hills: This is true on all roads. It’s especially a concern off-road, where trails tend to be narrower than city roads and you are driving in the middle. Loose gravel along the shoulders: As road graders smooth the road, they leave a berm of gravel along the shoulders. If driven into improperly, that wedge of gravel can cause a vehicle to go out of control. Avoid hitting these if possible. Washouts and potholes: These often have sharp edges and can be rather deep. Hitting one at high speed can result in significant damage to tires and shocks/struts. Parking on a trail or gravel road: Always a little dangerous, as the roads tend to be narrow. Avoid parking near blind curves or at the base of hills. Visibility diminished when close behind another vehicle: Vehicles kick up a large plume of dust as they drive on gravel or dirt. Visibility can be near zero if you’re

Drive properly on ‘washboard’ trails: This technique is tricky. close behind. Reaction time is short, and you may not see obstacles and hazards on the road or along the right shoulder.

How to safely drive on gravel roads Four-wheelers can take a number of steps to mitigate those hazards. Air down and slow down: Reducing tire pressure to1815 psi results in a bigger footprint for the tire meaning more contact on the ground. Driving slower provides more reaction time, reduces the dust that’s kicked up, and helps to maintain control of the vehicle. Whatever the recommended stopping distance is on pavement, double that on gravel. Give yourself more time to react. Drive in 4WD High: As soon as you get on gravel (or dirt), put the vehicle in 4WD High. Power in those front wheels gives the vehicle more control. You’ll stand a better chance of pulling out of a slide or spin if in 4WD High. Always look ahead: Take advantage of the added visibility when atop a hill or other high spot. Regardless of where you are on a trail, look ahead as far as you can for

other vehicles. Watch for a dust cloud in the distance. If you see one, chances are someone’s on the trail. But, just because you don’t see a dust cloud doesn’t mean that there isn’t a vehicle out there. Sometimes the light is just so that you can’t see clearly. Drive in own lane when approaching hills: Recall that drivers coming toward you are probably hogging the center. Move way over in your lane for maximum distance. The same applies when approaching blind curves. Drive through gravel berms: If you catch a wheel in a gravel berm, resist the temptation to jerk the vehicle back into the center of the road. I’ve heard of people who rolled a vehicle by jerking the wheel. In this case, slow down, and turn slightly to the right. That will get the wheel out of the gravel pile, which is now under the vehicle. Once down to a reasonably slow speed, ease back onto the trail. Drive properly on ‘washboard’ trails: This technique is tricky. The key is to find the rhythm. That will minimize the impact on the vehicle but often involves driving at a relatively risky speed. With any luck, the wash boarded

Avoid blind curves and other locations where visibility is limited. If possible, park off the trail but not onto sensitive land. Keep distance from vehicle in front: Don’t drive in the other guy’s dust plume. Create distance so you’re beyond the dust plume. You need to be able to see the road, along with any obstacles, such as potholes or large rocks. The lead driver must keep this in mind, as well. That person should avoid sudden actions (stops, for example) unless necessary. For group travels, it’s good to have a radio in each car. Any driver deciding to stop should announce his intentions. The other drivers have the opportunity to react.

Driving on gravel and dirt is a natural part of four wheeling. Knowing how to handle those surfaces is critical for a successful drive. Keep these tips in mind as you prepare for your next four-wheeling adventure.

G&G Racing and Kolby Carlile Back for 2024 Mission SuperTwins Campaign

G

&G Racing/Yamaha Racing announced today that Kolby Carlile will return to the team for the 2024 Progressive American Flat Track season to again compete in the Mission SuperTwins class. Now entering its ninth year in partnership with Yamaha Racing, G&G Racing has enjoyed a run of success that has seen the team garner 19 victories, 40 podiums, 51 top fives, and 79 top tens across classes throughout that collaboration. With Carlile at the controls of the team’s Yamaha MT-07 racebikes, the squad enters the ‘24 campaign from a position of strength. The 2017 Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER champion and a multi-time Mission Production Twins race winner, Carlile registered an impressive maiden season with G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing a year ago. He notched up eight top tens – including seven in a row – enroute to a tenth-place championship standing. In the midst of that run of top tens, Carlisle scored a career-best premier-class 88

finish of fourth at the Sacramento Mile, where he also earned a front-row starting position and qualified for the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. Kolby Carlile – G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing: “I’m ecstatic to have the opportunity to ride for G&G Racing one more year at the highest level. LJ and John have provided me with great Yamahas every time we went to the track, and having a full year under my belt has allowed us to build a notebook of setups for me. Getting to know those guys all last year has grown a great friendship and trust in one another. Going into 2024, I feel as confident as ever and have made some adjustments off track to help my performance on track. I’ll look to build upon what we were able to accomplish last year. I really want to get that top-three finish we were so close to last season, and I feel I am more prepared for that coming into 2024.” Jim Roach - Yamaha Racing Department Manager: “Yamaha Racing is looking forward to the return of G&G Racing to the Mission SuperTwins class for their ninth year. After taking a year to get acclimated with Kolby, 2024 is looking good!” L.J. Gronek - Team Owner: “We are excited for Kolby to return for 2024. Kolby showed speed and demonstrated the ability to be up front. With a year on the bikes, notes, and the hard work he has put in the off season, we believe he can continue to push to show that he can be a contender.

In 2020, the Californian became the first American to win the Motorcycle class in the grueling event and, four years and two days later, he adds the 46th edition to his win list. The Dakar Rally began in 1979 in Europe and Africa, and Honda first scored a win in 1982, at the hands of XR550mounted Cyril Neveu. The Frenchman added a second victory four years later aboard the NXR750V, then repeated the following year. Italian Edi Orioli brought Honda a third-consecutive win in 1988 with the NXR800V, which Frenchman Gilles Lalay rode to victory the following year. A dry spell for Honda followed, but Brabec put the brand back on top with the CRF450

RALLY in 2020, by which point the rally was taking place in Saudi Arabia. Brabec’s then-teammate Kevin Benavides won the following year, and this year’s success marks the eighth win for Honda (and the first for the next-generation CRF450 RALLY, in its debut). A desert-racing native of Southern California, Brabec won the 2014 edition of the SCORE Baja 1000 and earned AMA Hare & Hound National Championships in 2014 and 2016. A protégé of Baja legend and longtime Honda partner Johnny Campbell, Brabec signed with the Monster Energy Honda team for the 2015 season and campaigned the Dakar Rally four times before winning in his fifth try. (He had come agonizingly close the previous year, only to be thwarted by a late technical issue.) Since that 2020 success, Brabec finished second and seventh in ’21 and ’22, before a technical issue forced him out of last year’s race. Now he becomes the 13th rider to top the Dakar Rally on more than one occasion. “It’s a nice way to start the year with a victory,” Brabec said at the finish. “It wasn’t easy as the course was really tough and so was the competition. Ross and my own team kept me on my toes, but not just me, I think we were keeping everyone on each other’s toes. It was definitely a fight to the end for everyone. I’m really happy we’re all here and all safe and we can go home. This time was a little bit different as I feel like this one was more earned as it was a lot tougher. In 2020, we had a big gap from the get-go. Here, I think me and Ross spent three days with a couple

D I R T B I T S of seconds difference. It was a tight race for all of us. I think between first and third there are eleven minutes or something, whatever Adrien got, but it’s been a tight race and ten minutes is not a big gap here on the rally. I had two good days, two opportunities to make a good push, but also stage 11 was a scare factor for me because I knew Ross was starting behind me, 18 minutes behind, and if he caught me it would be over. Stage 11 was hard but I stayed focused, got to the finishing line and didn’t lose too much time, so I’m really happy with this and I’m really happy for the team. I’m happy for all of us, we did an excellent job all of the two weeks. I think number 9 will be my lucky number from now on.” With the team fully deserving of some rest and recuperation, they will reconvene in April for the BP Ultimate Rally-Raid in Portugal from 2nd – 7th April.

Honda Announces Talon 1000 Lineup for 2024 Model Year

merican Honda celebrated a new calendar year by revealing its full line of sport side-by-sides, with seven versions offered across two- and four-seat configurations. Since its introduction in 2019, the Honda Talon has offered off-road enthusiasts a highly capable platform for navigating all types of challenging terrain, with X versions tailored for wooded two-track and R iterations ready for rugged desert trails. The Talons have been continuously updated and improved over the years, and the 2024 lineup is the most capable ever offered, with both

standard and FOX Live Valve versions available—the former featuring new, premium Showa suspension that delivers a comfortable ride while still absorbing big hits. “As the Talon platform enters its sixth year in production, Honda is pleased to offer such an accomplished collection of sport side-by-sides for 2024,” said Brandon Wilson, Manager of Racing and Experiential Marketing at American Honda. “In a relatively short period, the Talon has won over a growing contingent of customers who appreciate the platform’s ability to deliver not only performance, but also reliability and dependability to the off-road experience.” Talon 1000 Two-Seat Versions The two-seater Talon is offered in two basic configurations—the nimble-handling 1000X, which shines in tight technical terrain, and the 1000R, favoring high speeds and open terrain. Both the Talon 1000R and Talon 1000X are available with intelligent FOX Live Valve technology, featuring adaptive suspension capabilities. New for 2024, the non-Live Valve Talons are equipped with premium Showa suspension, the result of a close collaboration between Honda and Showa engineers, who focused on enhancing ride comfort and rebound control while maintaining the shocks’ bottoming resistance for bigger impacts. All are ideal for delivering off-road adventure for a driver and passenger. Talon 1000 Four-Seat Versions First offered in 2020, the four-seat Talon 1000 platform has allowed owners to bring more family and friends on their off-road adventures, with a rear seating area that offers unrivaled passenger comfort and visibility. Like the two-seaters, the four-seat Talon 1000 is offered in X and R configurations— the former shining in tight, technical conditions, and the latter favoring higher speeds and open terrain. Both the X and R four-seaters are available with high-tech self-adjusting FOX Live Valve suspension, while the X is also offered in a standard version that features new, premium Showa shock absorbers for 2024. The result of a close collaboration between Showa and Honda engineers, the new shocks enhance ride comfort and rebound control while maintaining the shocks’ bottoming resistance for bigger impacts.
