"This was my second race back in four years. I started with a big crash on Friday while prerunning the course, but was able to get the bike fixed up and ready for the race on Saturday. It was a long fast 165 mile race, but was able to keep it together with no mistakes for the race on Saturday, and was able to take the win in the Expert class. I want to give a big thanks to Driven OffRoad in Fernley NV, and to my whole pit team, Dad and girlfriend for always supporting me." -

"Being my first off road race ever I didn't know what to expect. I went in with the mentality of holding a steady pace. After the first lap, that was out the door and competitiveness took over. We placed well, bike performed flawlessly, and the whole experience definitely exceeded my expectations. We are going to contiue to keep coming out on ATC's."

"Our race started off excellent with the land rush start. I got out in second overall. The race proved to be very challenging with the weather and course changing in several places because of it. We ended up with a total of four rear flats but the team was fast with the fuel and tire changes and kept us in the hunt for a solid overall finish. Not bad for a guy of 64 years of age. Looking forward to the V2R and finishing out the VORRA season solid."

The year was 1893 when Israel Baline's home in a Jewish village in Russia was destroyed by an anti-Jewish mob. Soon the five-year-old's family relocated to New York. But only three years later "Izzy" as he had come to be known lost his father.

The young boy went to work selling newspapers to help support his family and by his teen years he discovered he had a talent for singing and song writing.

It wasn't long before his career "took off like a rocket. He wrote stage musicals

and film scores, and produced hit after hit. Many are still sung today."1

He had a goal for his songwriting: “My ambition is to reach the heart of the average American…that vast intermediate crew which is the real soul of the country….My public is the real people.”

Did he know then that a hundred years later his songs would still be reaching the hearts of America?

Fast forward to 1938. War was brewing in Europe, from where he had recently traveled and when a famous singer asked for a new song to debut on her radio program, he knew he had to deliver. He felt a strong drive to compose an especially meaningful song for the times. But his mind went blank as he struggled to come up with the words that would meet that

urgent need he felt.

Then remembering a song he had penned 20 years before when in the Army he dug into the old wooden chest and found the paper with the scrawled words. They hadn't worked for the play he was composing during his Army days but they were the perfect words for this time in our nation. Even our world.

Trouble was at hand in Nazi Germany where under the leadership of Adolph Hitler war seemed to be imminent. The 50-year-old songwriter didn't wish to compose a song focusing on war or fighting or even the victory of winning. No, he had a different goal in mind.

One inspiring peace and gratitude. Remembering what it was like as a fiveyear-old boy to leave his ravaged home

in the little Jewish village and relocate to America, the love of his nation burned in his heart and grew ever stronger.

That was the song he wished to write. The song that would inspire the hearts of the average American to remember the love they have for their nation. And with a few small changes to his song from 20 years ago this was the song that gripped his heart and then the heart of the nation.

You may not know the name Israel Baline, because due to a publisher's error early in his career, he was renamed Irving Berlin. The song God Bless America, filled the request of Kate Smith who immediately sang it on her radio program. "After that, Smith almost always included the song in her weekly show, and it became her

trademark during a career that spanned five decades."2

As we all know the history, war did break out and once the US got involved a few years later, Irving Berlin toured with a show called "This is the Army" to raise funds for the war effort. God Bless America was one of the featured songs always performed.

"Other wartime songs would remind Americans what they were fighting against. Berlin’s God Bless America reminded them what they were fighting for."3

As I wrestled with what to write about this great nation we live in that is going through such deep trials for our Celebrate America special issue, it occurred to me, that like Irving Berlin, rather than write

about the turmoil, let's write about what's great about our nation and what we love. Come along with our readers on an off road trip that takes us across the nation. It began on our cover with pictures from Colorado and California and continues on page 32 taking in not quite all 50, but nearly two-thirds of the states in this beautiful nation of ours. And sing along in your mind as you come across the lyrics to our theme song "God Bless America, Land that I love!" E

"This race I had to do on my friend Dylan Ewing's old bike because I blew my bike up the weekend before. I missed the first start to the race because I had to go to the bathroom and they started it a little early. I then rushed out there to try to catch up to everybody. They decided to restart the race and I almost missed it again because I was so far behind on the track. I was doing good on my first lap until I went down and got stuck on a hill. I was able to salvage a fourth in my class out of the race. I had a lot of fun riding this Honda 150 but it was really tough for how tall I was. Thank you to all my sponsors that helped me out. Special thank you you S&S Off Road Mag for allowing me to write this, Uncle Bob at Sunnyside Promotions, and SFR graphics." - Matthew Savoy

I ironwomanned the whole thing and was the only girl driver of record in the car/truck/SxS classes. We did all 611 miles of the Baja Nevada and got 4th place. Thank you so much to everyone.

DAY 1. We got off the start line, holding our own, staying in third, and then right before pit 3, we had a few issues. It started sounding and feeling like a loss of power after hitting a big shelf in the silt. Thank goodness we were in the pit when it died. Very lucky it happened there and KJ and Eric made quick work of it and off we went.

Our troubles were not over with yet, our clutch decided to break, we didn't know that at the time, but about 4 miles out, we starting losing power, but we kept pushing on and by the time we crossed the finish line we were doing about 20 mph, and rolled to the podium where it died right there on the spot. Guys did some parking lot repairs and got her all fresh again for the new day.

DAY 2. New day, feeling like it's time to put the hammer down and make up some time. Off we

go, in the zone feeling fast, Kendall Appelt killing it in the CoDog seat again. We are gaining on the car in front staying in the dust in the first few miles, staying on him and then finally we got him. We had the chance in the switchback rocky section and made the pass. We are now in second place physically. Let's chase down first place. Feeling good and then 35 miles in I ran out of talent, as they say. After a long hill climb straight away, full speed, there was a slight left, and a big 4 or 5 foot mound of dirt on the outside of that slight left that caught us both off guard, caught us just enough to send us over one and a half times. A 12 car stopped to help, got the net open and called it in and off he went.

We begin our self recovery, as we are in the middle of nowhere. We got back in, strap up, fire her right up, and off we go. The rest of the stops were flawless.

Thank you to my entire team for this. You guys are rock stars, I love you all and thank you to my sponsors, friends and partners who got me here.

"We qualified third on Thursday. Come race day we seemed to be in heavy dust the entire day. It wasn't until we passed the spec truck of Brent Fox during one of his pit stops we were finally able to get some clean air. Leaving the last pit on Day 1 my crew saw a tire going down. Unfortunately it was too late to stop so we tried to push on but to no avail. We had to change it with 40 miles to go. Fox got back by but we were able to reel him in for a Day 1 victory. Day 2 we started fifth overall with TT's and one buggy in front of us. We pushed hard passing one TT with issues and another just after a road crossing. Unfortunately for us our good luck was short lived and we had a $2 part failure ending our win streak. The truck used to be an off road racing truck in all the races around western South Dakota and Nebraska in the 80s and 90s. It sat in some pine trees for a lot of years. I got ahold of it and resurrected it from the coil springs and shocks to coil overs. All new brake lines and fuel lines, hydraulic steering, etc. all new. Cammed 5.3, th400 and np205. Built over two years. Primarily for mud racing on course tracks but going to start doing the Y.O.R.R. series this fall just for the fun of it.

Round

two of the 2023 CALVMX/Legends And Heroes

Of Motocross saw the vintage and post-vintage racers making their second appearance at Perris Raceway. Machines ranging from the mid 1970’s to the latest machines were staged in the pit area. Overcast weather kept temperatures at trackside at comfortable levels. Competition once again was held on a vintage friendly version of the Perris Raceway Vet track. The staff at Perris devoted extra time to ensure the course layout was challenging and essentially “period correct” for the older machines.

The first race taking to the track was the combined GP-1 500 Intermediate and Experts, along with GP-1 250 Expert, GP-2 500 Intermediate and GP-3 500 Expert. Getting a great launch off the old-school green flag start was GP-1 250 Expert Cliff Fredricks and he led the mixed pack down the

front straight into turn one. Fredricks reeled off six steady laps on his way to being the first bike across the finish line. Their second moto start saw GP-1 500 Expert Tim Harris taking a massive holeshot and powering into a multibike length lead. Overcoming after a slower start, first moto front-runner Fredricks began to power his way through the mixed pack, closing the gap between himself and Harris. Harris sustained his pace and was first across the finish line. Fredricks crossed the line soon after to clinch the overall win in the 250 Class, with Harris, scored separately, securing the overall in the GP-1 500 class.

The second race taking to the Perris course was the combined Open Age Vintage Expert, 50 Plus Vintage Novice, 60 Plus Vintage Expert, Intermediate and Novice and 70 Plus Vintage Intermediate. Making a return visit to CALVMX, Open Age Expert Chase George rocketed off the

start and pulled out a huge lead over the rest of the combined classes. George blitzed around the course with impressive speed as he pushed his classic pre75 Suzuki TM to its limits. Unchallenged, George crossed the line well ahead of the other competitors. Scored separately, the brother duo of Robert and Charlie Finnegan finished 1-2 in the 60 Plus Vintage Intermediate.

George made quick work of his portion of the second moto, disappearing shortly after the start with a huge lead. Behind George, the Finnegan brothers repeated their finishes with Robert taking the overall, followed by Charlie. In the 60 Plus Novice division, Marty Eisen logged 1-1 moto scores to clinch the overall, with Tim Vasquez in second.

Other class winners on the day included Kurt Obermeyer in GP-50 Plus Intermediate, along with Scott Mays in GP-60 Plus Intermediate. Ben Eisen and his diminutive Honda CR80 prevailed in the Vintage

The third round of the 2023 CALVMX series will take place on July 9th on the Vet Track at Perris Raceway. With classes being offered for any era of machine, all competitors are encouraged to join in for a day of racing.

November 19, 1923 -- after a 129.61 mph run aboard an Ace XP-4

From the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Charles "Red" Wolverton

Cross-Country Record Holder, Engineer, Hillclimber

Red Wolverton was a top racer and speed record setter in the 1920s and ’30s. He was a well-rounded rider, competing in a variety of motorcycle competition, from board track to dirt track to hillclimbing. He was also one of the country’s leading motorcycle engineers and helped test and build motorcycles built by Excelsior-Henderson and later Ace. He became a motorcycle dealer, first in Philadelphia, before moving to Reading, Pennsylvania, and successfully

operated that business until his retirement in 1956.

One of eight children, Wolverton was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on January 10, 1902, and grew up in Columbia,

60 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - JULY 2023 - www.ssormag.com

Missouri. At 14, Wolverton got a job as a general helper in a motorcycle shop in Columbia. His first ride on a motorcycle came when he saw a bike in for service sitting outside the shop with no motor. Young Wolverton pushed the bike out of the alley behind the shop and hopped on and coasted down a steep hill. He had so much fun riding the motorless bike, he pushed it back up the hill several more times until the owner of the shop came back and caught him. Before long, the shop owner let Wolverton ride a 1911 Harley-Davidson single-cylinder belt-drive model.

"It seemed like heaven twisting the throttle on the old one lunger," Wolverton recalled in a 1950 interview with American Motorcyclist.

In 1918, Wolverton’s family moved to Quincy, Illinois, where he immediately picked up another job at a motorcycle shop. With his earnings from the shop, he bought his first motorcycle, a well used 1911 Indian single, for which he paid $35. Not long afterwards, he graduated to a 1915 Indian twin. As a young man, Wolverton loved taking long trips on his motorcycle. In the days before improved roads, trips around the country were often quite difficult and required good riding skills.

On one of his trips to the West, he met a fellow rider who convinced Wolverton to come to work at his dealership in Denver. While living in Colorado, Wolverton began his competition career. He first tried hillclimbing and enduro events. Wolverton’s first victory came in an enduro run that began in Colorado Springs and circled Pikes Peak. Next he set a cityto-city record by making the run from Denver to Colorado Springs over rugged wagon trails in a record time of one hour, 31 minutes.

In 1922, Excelsior chief engineer Art Lemon came to Denver in search of a good rider to do altitude testing on the Chicago-based company’s machines. Wolverton was just the rider for the job and became a test rider for Excelsior. Three months later, Wolverton moved to Chicago and tested Excelsior and Henderson motorcycles nearly every day of the year in all sorts of weather.

In 1923, Lemon took a position with Ace Motorcycles in Philadelphia and insisted on bringing his chief tester and, by now, fellow engineer Wolverton with him. It was with Ace that Wolverton set a record that he is perhaps best remembered for.

In 1923, Ace decided to build the fastest bike ever produced. No expense was spared and the result of the company's labors was a four-cylinder bike that weighed only 270 pounds but boasted nearly 42 horsepower. Horsepower figures in that range were practically unheard of in the early 1920s. The special four-cylinder Ace was 100 pounds lighter than the road-going version and reportedly to cost an astronomical $10,000 to build. Amazingly, to test the reliability of the bike "T.N.T." Terpening and Wolverton rode the special at regional and national hillclimbing events. After winning the 1923 hillclimb national in Egypt, New York,

Terpening gave up riding the machine, saying he could not safely handle such a powerful motorcycle. Wolverton won several hillclimbs with the bike, including an upset victory over then reigning hillclimb king Orrie Steele.

With a summer's worth of testing completed, the bike was ready for its record speed attempt. The Ace factory had originally planned to make the record attempt on a beach course, but with winter quickly approaching, the decision was made to do the record attempt on a long stretch of concrete highway just outside of Philadelphia. Arrangements were made with local law officials to shut down the stretch of highway.

News of the attempt obviously spread widely, because photos of the run show hundreds of spectators wearing heavy winter coats watching Wolverton speeding along the highway. November 23, 1923, was a cold and overcast day with temperatures only in the 30s as Wolverton set off on the special Ace and tripped the electronic timers at an amazing speed of 129.61 mph. Wolverton had become the

first rider to go over the two-mile-per-minute mark. The Ace crew then attached a sidecar to the bike and another record of 106.82 mph was set.

"During the ride, the goggles I was wearing were flattened right back against my eyeballs and the wind was terrific," Wolverton said in a magazine interview after the run. "I think I could have gone faster, but when I reached 129 mph the cycle began to shake and I knew I didn’t have complete control of it."

Magazines of the day heralded the speed run and the record-setting Ace toured the country at various shows. Ace was so confident of its accomplishment that it wagered $10,000 that no other manufacturer could break the record. The speed run made Wolverton a hero overnight.

Wolverton married in 1925 and he and a friend borrowed $300 each and opened a Harley-Davidson dealership in Philadelphia. In 1929, Wolverton moved to Reading, Pennsylvania, and opened a dealership there. He ran that Harley dealership until 1956, when he sold it to racer Leon Applegate and retired. Wolverton continued to race through the late 1930s. He was one of the few riders who made the transition from the old Class A format to the early days of Class C racing.

By his own account, one of the highlights of Wolverton’s life was when he and his wife, Helen, took a six-week, 10,000-mile motorcycle-sidecar trip in 1951. The couple first rode from Reading to Milwaukee, where Harley-Davidson engineers installed a test motor. Then it was on to Mexico via Texas, and then up through California before heading back to Milwaukee to have their original motor installed, and then back home. The Wolvertons didn’t hit one drop of rain

during the entire trip.

Wolverton was a lifetime member of the AMA and served the association in a variety of capacities over the years. He also belonged to the Middle Atlantic Motorcycle Dealers’ Association from its inception and served as its president from the late 1930s through to the 1950s. That association promoted the classic 100-mile AMA national at Langhorne (Pennsylvania) Speedway. He was also an active member of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America.

In the 1960s, Wolverton ran a bicycle shop that also sold go-carts. He retired for good in the late 1960s, living out the rest of his days in the Reading area. He continued riding his beloved antique motorcycles and stayed in touch with his many friends in motorcycling. In 1998, the city of Philadelphia commemorated the 75th anniversary of Wolverton’s 1923 record speed run with a ceremony that brought together many of Wolverton’s surviving friends and fans of Ace Motorcycles.

Brabham sweeps Long Beach Super Truck weekend

14-15, 2023

Since its debut in 2011, the Robby Gordon Stadium Super Truck races have been one of the most popular events of the annual Acura Grand Prix weekend in Long Beach CA. For 2023, the name that dominated both races on the weekend was a blast from the past, Brabham. Matt Brabham is the son of racing champion Geoff Brabham, and the grandson of racing legend “Black Jack” Brabham. Brabam has been racing in the SST series for a number of years and has been the biggest thorn in the side of series creator and owner, and racing legend himself, Robby Gordon. And this time he made that thorn very big for the rest of the field.

Long Beach was the opening round of the 2023 Stadium Super Truck Series and Friday’s qualifying session saw Gordon set the fastest time for the 20-minute timed race. With the field being inverted, this would give Robby the tenth starting position for Saturday’s first race while second fastest qualifier Gavin Harlein was ninth, with Robby’s 14-year-old son Max eighth, Robert Stout seventh and Brabham sixth. Up front was slowest qualifier Bill Hynes and Trey Hernquist on row one, Bruce Binnquist and Ryan Beat on row two and Miles Cheek rounding out the top five (or bottom five, depending on how you look at it).

When the green flag dropped for the standing start, Hynes got the jump on the field and led a tightly backed bunch into turn one. At the end of lap one Hynes held the lead over Hernquist and Beat while Brabham was already on

the move up through the field. Matt got passed first Beat and then Hernquist and was soon on Hynes’ tail. Before Brabham could get past Hynes, Bennquist nosed into the wall in the Dolphin Fountain turn and that brought out the first caution flag of the day.

The field tightened up for the restart and once the green flag flew again, Brabham made short work of Hynes and took over the lead, with Robby soon moving past Hynes into second place. Once in front, the two most successful drivers in the series began to pull away from the rest of the pack with Stought, Harlein and Max running nose-to-tail behind. Hynes dropped back when he overran a turn and had to get back on the course.

One of the traits of the SST series are three competition caution flags that are thrown every 3 ½ laps (or when needed) to close up the pack and make the racing more exciting. When yellow came out, that allowed Robby, Stout, Harlein and Max to close in on Brabham and they were noseto-tail when the green flag flew again. Brabham got the jump on the rest of them and extended his lead, pulling away from Robby and Harlein while Max managed to pass Stout and finish fourth.

Sunday’s second race saw Hynes take the lead on the start followed by a big pack behind featuring Cheek, Beat, Stout, Max and Harlein with Brabham and Robbie on the charge behind them.

64 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - JULY 2023 - www.ssormag.com
April Long Beach CA Article & Photos by Michael Maher

Hynes had started to drop back and when they came to the first of the two front straight jumps, Hynes dropped a wheel and got sideways, which knocked the metal jump out of alignment. This brought out the yellow but it also incited Robby to stop and check out the damage. He then used his truck to straighten out the jump and rejoined the file for the restart.

On the restart, Cheek held the lead over Stout, Harlein, Max and Brabham. Brabham took Max and Harlein and set

out after the leaders, while Robby was also back on the charge after his emergency track repair.

When the competition caution came out, Cheek was in the lead, but Brabham and Harlein were right behind him. Harlein overshot turn one and had to turn around while Brabham got by Cheek to take the lead. Matt held the lead to the finish to take the checkered flag ahead of Cheek with Harlein recovering to finish third over Robby, Max and Stout. "We flew into California from Pennsylvania about 4 hours before the race. Started off the day pretty slow, as the track was so different from any other track I raced before. I got used to it pretty quick and found it is actually one of my favorite tracks. All the locals around there made it really fun to chase around. A long main event made for some great battles. I ended up hooking a rut during the race making me go down on the front straight. Got back up, and with some good starts I got up to 8th."

The residents of Camp Lockett awoke to the sounds of highly tuned motors as the 2023 CALVMX/The Wild Wild West flat track series began their seven-round schedule. A cloudy sky kept the approaching summer heat in check throughout the day. The well-prepared track, including extra attention provided by a crew led by Pat Donahue to the problematic corner ruts issue, involving heavy compacting to the troublesome areas, insured a high-quality race surface throughout the day.

During the morning rider’s meeting, the Camp Lockett course was officially renamed the Ben Tulloch Raceway. Tulloch, a mainstay at the Camp Lockett races since their inception some eight years ago, has provided invaluable help with track preparation, maintenance, and equipment. For several years, he was a familiar sight circling the oval in his vintage Kenworth water truck.

A decent cross section of machinery was on hand for the opening round. Two-wheeled machines including pullstarts, junior flat track bikes, adult minis, and full-size flat track machines shared the pits with the karting contingent, mini dwarfs, outlaw karts, along with quads and threewheelers. A tour of the pits revealed quite a few series

regulars. The two-wheeled regulars included Lilirose Bishop, with her newly acquired Brad Roysdon manufactured skid shoe strapped to her boot, Summer Kukla, Jeff Apple, Bill Lyons, and Braydin Collie. Karting regulars in attendance included Lauren Bishop, Pat Donahue, and Rita Green, along with George and Marty Wolf.

Six lap heat races establishing the starting grids were staged at midday. Following track maintenance, ten lap main events took to the track in the early afternoon. Leading off the main events were the spectacular Outlaw Karts. With their distinctive wings, their races routinely record some of the fastest laps. Taking an early lead in the main event, Outlaw B entrant Kaylee Butler powered into an early lead over both the “A” and “B” ranked racers. Using an impressively smooth style, Butler kept all her challengers at bay to be the first across the finish line and first in her class.

In the two-wheeled division mains, Brad Roysdon got his 2023 series off to a good start in the Plus 50 Expert class. After winning his heat race, Roysdon timed the green flag perfectly to lead the combined 50 and 60 Plus Experts along with the 35 Plus, 70’s Singles and Open divisions, into turn one. Roysdon

Throughout the 10-lap finale, he never put a wheel wrong, taking the checkers ahead of Jeff Apple who had shadowed Roysdon the entire race.

The most heavily subscribed divisions at CALVMX oval track events are the plethora of kart classes. From the smallest karts driven by three- and four-year-old drivers up to the ultra-quick 125cc machinery, their racing is seldom without close quarter duels, often involving multiple competitors. In the Open 125 A main, David Kimmel’s twin-engined mount seized an early lead over Jerett Brooks and Pat Donahue. Kimmel led for much of the race, while behind him a flurry of passes and bumper banging amongst the field was occurring. Brooks stalked Kimmel relentlessly throughout the race. Late in the event, Brooks got the drive he needed to take over the lead. Kimmel stayed within striking distance, but at the checkers it was Brooks with the win, followed by Kimmel and Donahue.

Other class winners on Saturday included Braydin Collie scoring wins in both the Adult Mini 150 Experts and the Open Bike Expert finals, Chase Taber in 4 Stroke Adult Kart, and Evan Dollente in JR Kart 8-11 B. Also joining the list of winners was Rita Green in the Open Kart 125 B Women’s main event.

Sunday’s portion of the weekend was staged beneath a cloudless sky and temperatures not far away from three digits. With the emphasis being on the four-wheeled contingent, there was a large cross section of karts, mini

dwarfs, and the ultra-high speed winged Outlaw Karts. In addition, a good turnout of pull-start two wheeled competitors was present.

Following a thorough course refreshing after the qualifying heat races, the main events began in the early afternoon. With karting being the main attraction, the first kart class final was the Open 125 A division. Ryder Patterson led the field early in the final with the bunchedup pack bumping and jostling in hot pursuit. Patterson held the lead for several laps, while behind him, Brian Kimmel broke free of the pursuing pack and closed in on Patterson. Kimmel took the lead around the midway point of the 10-lap finale, while behind him, a flurry of passing and spinning karts resulted in David Kimmel trailing in second with Eric Sweetman in third. Brian Kimmel kept his throttle pinned and sped to the main event win, with David Kimmel second and Sweetman logging a third-place finish.

The throaty roar of four-cycle motors filled the air in the Adult Open A kart main event. Coming out of a perfect pace lap, series regular Brian Pusey led the field into the first turn. Trailing Pusey were Chase Taber and A.J. Dale. Pusey put on quite a display of driving prowess as he kept his machine under control on the rapidly drying oval. Taber and Dale never ceased their pursuit of Pusey. Taking advantage of his approximately three-second lead, Pusey flashed across the finish line with the win, followed by Taber and Dale.

With Sunday offering a points paying final, a healthy turnout of pull-start bikes staged for their main event. With his own machine unavailable due to necessary maintenance work, Jeff Apple, taking a break from his job as Chief Starter, used a borrowed machine in a faceoff with Brett Miller, Nathan Baumgardner, and the formidable Julian Hoefert. Miller took the early lead at the start, with Apple and the rest of the mixed divisions of competitors in tow. Apple found the traction and space he needed to power into the lead at the midway point of lap two. With a clear track ahead of him, Apple used his decades of oval track experience to build up a solid lead that went unchallenged as he sped to the win. Crossing the line in second and third were Miller and Baumgardner.

The winged Outlaw Kart division rarely if ever have a routine race when they take to the oval. In their main event,

Kaylee Butler timed the green flag perfectly to lead the field at the start. Repeated passing between Ray Butler and George Wolf behind her kept spectator eyes riveted to the track. Kaylee set a torrid pace as her hands were a constant blur of movement as she maneuvered her way around the oval. Logging ten perfectly executed laps, Kaylee flashed across the line with the victory, followed by Ray Butler and Wolf.

Other Sunday main event winners were Zaiden Haines in Mini Dwarf A, Caden Rose in Kid Karts 5-7 B and Chad Reed in 100cc Senior Kart A competition. Tyler Warner topped the KPV Cadet A Kart final, with Brody Moler taking the overall in Junior 1 Karts 8-11.

With the series just beginning, there is plenty of time to score points and pursue a class championship for all competitors as the racing goes on all summer. E

Federal Bill S.873

America’s Outdoor Recreation Act of 2023 was introduced last March by Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia. The bill discusses a wide variety of recreation topics including long distance bicycling, rock climbing, fees on public land and travel management. It's this travel management part that has us worried. The bill's language tells the national forests and BLM to perform travel management over all their routes. This has already been done in recent years and, for the most part, we lost routes during this process. For travel management to take place, the agencies are required to make an inventory of routes in their district and then have specialists inspect the routes. Specialists can "find" things wrong with the routes, or worse, the agency can simply leave routes out of the inventory. When travel management came to the National Forests in the early 2000's, we lost a lot of routes, many for no good reason. We are working having the bill amended.

BLM National Conservation

The BLM is working on a proposal to raise conservation to the level of multiple use on all BLM land in the country. Right now, the BLM has a multiple use mandate. This has them accommodate all kinds of uses like hunting, fishing, rock climbing, rock hounding (collecting), mining, solar and wind energy development and off-roading. This proposal would allow "conservation easements" to be sold to non-government entities. It would also allow areas of critical environmental concern be designated easier. Congressman John Curtis of Utah has introduced a bill, with 18 cosponsors, telling the BLM to withdraw this conservation proposal. SDORC has just sent Congressman Curtis a thank you note expressing our appreciation for his action.

Johnson Valley

The Johnson Valley Shared Use Area will be temporarily closed to the public beginning Friday August 18 through Monday August 28, 2023, while the Marine Corps conducts critical military training in the area. Upcoming closures of the Johnson Valley Shared

Use Area are August 18-28, 2023, and February 15-27, 2024

California Bills

Brian Jones red sticker bill, SB708, is moving through the legislature and has a good chance of passing. This bill would require the Department of Parks and Recreation to issue a special permit to California residents to operate certain off-road motorcycles at sanctioned events. Bill AB1617 has died at the request of the author. This would have eliminated displacement from the definition of SXS vehicles. These vehicles are defined as under 1000cc currently. The problem came when Polaris introduced a SXS that looks very much like others but has almost 2000cc displacement. People in these vehicles are not required to wear helmets because of the State's definition. I reached out to the bill's author's office to find out more about why the bill wasn't moving (before it died). They said there was some pushback from users who drive Jeeps and dune buggies and don't want to wear helmets. The state code currently says "off-highway" vehicles in the definition, so any street legal vehicles would not be affected. It also says, "manufactured vehicles", which is a little confusing. Is a homemade dune buggy manufactured? I suggested that they add a clause saying, "manufactured by companies that produce over 99 units per year". This

would separate the small custom builders from the big manufacturers. We expect the bill to come back next year slightly amended and we have offered to help the author's office craft language.

Jamboree

By the time you read this the Off-Road Jamboree at Lakeside Rodeo grounds will be over. Right now, in mid-June, we have sold out of vendor space and are getting lots of online pre-entries. I think the show is going to be a big hit, lots of fun and we want to thank our own Audrey Mason, Clean Dezert's Adam Filbin and Fernando Martinez of Ferns Semi Famous BBQ for going the extra mile to make this a great event.

Little Items

Our next meeting will be on July 11th at Ranch House Restaurant starting at 6:30 pm. We will have El Cajon mayor and congressional candidate Bill Wells come and speak about his campaign for the 51st district.

We have confirmed our spot at the Sand Sports Super Show this September 15-17. Look for us in the same spot as last year inside a building promoting our organization and the Lost Lizard Fun Run.

SDORC is being nominated for an award by the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council for our work in the Cleveland National Forest kids training area.

Amy Reichert is running for San Diego County Supervisor and is endorsed by the San Diego Republican Party. Amy has spoken at SDORC meetings and is supportive of off-road vehicle use.

The Lost Lizard Fun Run is coming this November 4th. If you are interested in having a checkpoint, donating raffle prizes or sponsoring the event, contact us at info@sdorc.org Pre-entry is open at https:// sdorc.org/fun-run-2023/ E

Summer has arrived. Among the myriad outdoor activities that come to mind is four-wheeling. Many four-wheelers go off-road during the winter months, of course, but summer is a particularly popular time.

With weather conditions generally calm, it’s natural to assume that the trails and back roads are open and accessible. That’s not necessarily the case. Indeed,

Research Trail Conditions

trails could be closed or made impassable due to a host of natural calamities.

Even in summer, spend a few moments checking the status of the trails you intend to drive. One or more may be closed.

Why might the trails be closed?

A. Deep snow. Due to the record snowfall California received this past winter, higher elevations still have significant amounts of snow. Roads and trails could be challenging. The Rubicon still has snow on it. It’s not technically closed, but you can’t drive far on it.

B. Debris from landslides. Snowmelt is causing flash floods, mudslides and

landslides. Roads and trails may be torn up or blocked by boulders and mud. Flash floods can literally rearrange a trail, leaving it markedly different in shape and location.

C. High water on the trail. In as little as two feet of water, the vehicle is lifted so that the tires lose traction. Streams could be running high for several months, as the snowpack slowly melts.

D. A government agency deemed the trail or road unsafe. Authorities are concerned for your safety, as well as the safety of first responders who may be called to provide aid. Even though the trail may seem passable, heed the CLOSED sign. Turn around and come back another day.

Know the area to adapt to weather hazards

Back in May I joined several buddies for a trip in Utah. We intended to drive and camp on the Barracks Trail but learned early on that the trail’s 20-odd water crossings were impassable. (There’s no way to drive the trail without crossing streams multiple times.) The water was flowing so fast and deep, we were advised to stay off the trail.

As one local put it, “Even if you had 40-inch tires you wouldn’t have made it.”

We nixed that idea. Being familiar with that area helped us quickly rethink our plans. We found a great campsite on a parallel road.

I encountered similar issues in Death Valley in autumn 2022. Several storms moved through that area during the summer. Just before leaving for my trip in October, I learned that almost everything –paved roads and back roads – was closed.

The Park Service closed the roads because they didn’t feel it was safe to drive through. Roads were so washed out you

couldn’t get from one side of the park to the other. (Incredibly, three or four roads are still closed.) As an alternative, we had everyone drive all the way around to enter the park from the east side, change our route to use open roads and change to an available campsite.

The issue isn’t confined to California. A number of roads in Utah suffered water damage and are closed.

How to find out about trail conditions

A good place to start is the internet. Search for a blog or forum dedicated to the area you’re interested in. While those resources are useful, the information could be old and obsolete. Note when the article was published. If more than a week old, conditions could have changed.

With snowmelt causing flooding and washouts, a trail discussed in a blog post could’ve changed dramatically soon after the person’s visit. You wouldn’t know that by relying solely on blog or forum posts.

The DOT and some counties publish

road status reports on a regular basis. One of interest to me is produced by Inyo County in California. Go to https://www. inyocounty.us/services/public-works/news/ inyo-county-road-openclosed-status to download a copy of the PDF. You’ll note, for example, that Buttermilk Road, along with North and South Saline roads are closed. I believe they update the list on a weekly basis. As of this writing, the June 12 report is the latest.

Perhaps friends – or their friends – live near where you intend to drive. Call them for advice.

Feel free to call the oversight agency. That could be the county, U.S. Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management. Note that officials tend to err on the side of caution. They don’t know what your capabilities are, so you may be told to choose a different trail.

The mountains present their own hazards

As mentioned already, mountainous areas out west still hold deep snow packs.

www.ssormag.com - JULY 2023 - S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE 91
Saline Valley

During the hot summer days, tourists gravitate toward higher elevations. They don’t expect to encounter roads covered by snow or damaged from snowmelt. Or simply closed.

Always check the status of roads and trails before leaving. And, of course, pack appropriate clothing.

Have a backup plan

Memorial Day 2019, I was with a group that planned to camp near Papoose Flats, located in the White-Inyo range of eastern California. The weather deteriorated as we climbed to about 7,000 feet. Listening to NOAA weather on the ham radio, we learned a big storm was going to hit that night. Changing plans, we drove through Papoose Flat and exited the

Inyo Mountains on Death Valley Road. As we descended into Saline Valley, a heavy, violent thunderstorm blew out of the Inyo mountains and Papoose Flat, and across the road we were travelling on. Still about 10 miles north of the storm, we had a bird’s eye view as it travelled quickly beyond us. Camp was pleasant that night considering the alternative: spending a cold, freezing night on the side of the mountain.

There were two takeaways for us that weekend:

A. Carry a radio capable of receiving the NOAA weather channel.

B. Know the area well enough to

select an alternative campsite.

Few four-wheeling expeditions go exactly as planned. But that’s part of the allure of this hobby. An unexpected challenge adds spice to any excursion. However, closed or blocked trails and roads can ruin a trip if not accounted for.

Before every trip, check on trail conditions, and create a backup plan to counter a blocked trail or other unexpected challenge.
