AMA DISTRICT 38 King of the Desert

Race started out really good, sitting in second place behind Chad Goodsell. Had a great first lap and then at mile 6 or 7 I hit a rock and broke my rear brake lever and had no rear brakes. Was a struggle to go down the hills since they were covered in boulders and rocks. Ended up going down hard and had to limp the bike to the pits to get it back going and finish the race. Race was awesome and technically loved it till I did a front flip down the hill.

They don’t call it King of the Desert for no reason, it was a good mix of open desert, rocks, and sand dunes. For as much as I love more technical courses, this one was definitely brutal, and strong winds were no help.

As always though, I had fun and I’m happy to be out there.

Earth day. It's my favorite holiday to hate. And it comes around every April. Just like the birthday of Vladimir Lenin. In fact they share the day. It's likely no coincidence that the first earth day ever celebrated was on the 100th anniversary of the birth of the socialist leader, for after all, the effort to "save" the earth does indeed involve controlling the people who live here. All in the name of protecting the planet, mind you.

When we first got involved in hating earth day and nearly all things smacking of environmentalism it was because of

the damage it was doing to our sport. Protecting the land, the animals and the very air we breathe was often seen as incompatible with the pursuit of motorized recreation. Thus, beginning sometime in the 1990's we began regularly writing about the perils of environmentalism and the negative impact they were having on our sport, only to discover as time went on, this negativity began to impact every area of our lives.

Fast forward to the 21st century, 20 some years into it and we're seeing results we never would have imagined, such as gas powered vehicles on the chopping block in a number of states across the nation. Our own once formerly great state of California is leading the pack in this effort.

"According to personal finance site Money, California was the first state to adopt the Advanced Clean Cars II rule, which will put a complete ban to new sales of gas-powered cars by 2035."1

How does this align with what the people want? This same source reports, "According to Kelley Blue Book, EVs made up 7.6 percent of new car sales in 2023."2

Maybe check in with Hertz Rentals

to see how electric vehicles worked out for them. David Blackmon, energy consultant based in Texas, wrote earlier this year in the DailyCaller.com, "The company . . . will eliminate fully 20,000 EVs – a third of its EV fleet – and replace them with more of the gas-powered cars on which it has always based its business. Why? Well, it turns out that – stop me if you’ve heard this before – the EVs are far more costly to maintain than anticpated and customers have shown low demand for them. Go figure."3

Then there was the guy who tried to take his family on a road trip in his brand new EV truck. "I was forced to ditch my $115,000 Ford EV truck during a family road trip – it’s the ‘biggest scam of modern times.’"4 Having so much difficulty finding charging stations he finallly in desperation had the truck towed to a Ford dealer where he proceeded to rent a gas-powered truck to finish their vacation.

If a person wants to buy an electric vehicle, I fully believe they should have that option, but should we be mandated to drive them? No, absolutely not. And a state that will outlaw the sale of new gas-powered vehicles may as well be

mandating that their citizens must drive the EV's.

To me, this is all tied in to earth day and all it stands for. Absurd requirements all in the name of fighting so-called climate change.

And not just the cars, how about the gas powered generators and gas-powered lawn tools. And there is talk about banning gas stoves. What happens to our personal choice? And what impact do all these mandates really make on the temperature of the earth as legislation seeks to control us more and more in the United States, and in California specifically?

"Even if America stopped emitting carbon overnight, global temperatures would decline by less than 0.2 of a degree Celsius by the year 2100, according to government models."5

This reported by the Daily Signal in the article, New Documentary’s ‘Cold Truth’ About Climate. The author further writes: “'Climate the Movie: The Cold Truth' shows that climate models have consistently overestimated warming, running 43% hotter than actual observations over the past 50 years. Policymakers are nonetheless rushing to

implement aggressive emissions cuts and renewable energy mandates that prioritize green energy, but raise costs and result in more blackouts."6

It's so appropriate that earth day and Lenin's birthday share the same date on the calendar each year because Lenin's belief system didn't bother itself with wrong or right, only what must be done to achieve the desired end. According to Alexander Marriott writing in Capitalism Magazine in 2004, "Lenin’s political philosophy knew nothing of morality, he once said that, 'There are no morals in politics; there is only expedience. A scoundrel may be of use to us just because he is a scoundrel.'”7

Marriott agrees the shared date is wholly appropriate. He writes further: "Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet Premier after Joseph Stalin, decided in 1955 that the country should celebrate their national political philosophy, communism. He chose as the day, April 22, Vladimir Lenin’s birthday, a tribute to the founder of the Soviet Union. When environmentalists decided that the Earth deserved a day of celebration in 1970, they could have picked any day of the year, as no one knows the exact day date of the Earth’s birthday. They

chose Lenin’s birthday, just as Khrushchev had done. Was this just a coincidence? I think not."

In case you might still be wondering, no, I won't be celebrating or acknowledging earth day in any way whatsoever. But if you choose to, maybe you might like to pay tribute to its inspiration, Vladimir Lenin. You can you know. Dead for 100 years, he has never been buried and his body is still available to view, on display in the Lenin Mausoleum, open almost every day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

And that, to me, is as bizarre as the political ideology that drove him and the movement that shares his birthday. E

Round one of the AMA West Hare Scrambles presented by Mojo Motorsport kicked off the weekend of February 17-18 in Doyle, California. The 2024 Turtle Mountain Hare Scramble was hosted by the Lassen M/C Diamondbacks.

The conditions for this year’s season opener could not have been better, with a late season snow melting off just in time to leave wet dirt on the freshly groomed trails, minimizing the dust. The Lassen M/C has hosted the opening round for WHS for the past four years, and has always set up a fun, flowing race leading the riders up and back down steep mountainous desert terrain. The 12 mile loop ended in a huge downhill known as “Widowmaker,” which could be seen from the pits and allowed spectators and teams the opportunity to view their racers ripping into the finish line. The fastest Pro racer completed the loop in just under 20 minutes. The race was 2.5 hours long, resulting in a maximum of eight loops over the course of the sunny day.

Returning 2023 WHS Pro Champion Red Bull FMF KTM Factory Racing’s Dante Oliveira showed up in full force

ready to defend his title, which is exactly what he did. After an exciting back and forth battle with his teammate Mateo Oliveira, the champ secured his P1 position finishing less than a minute in front of his brother. The two secured the first two podium positions, clocking times of 2:40:17 and 2:41:02 unofficially.

Rounding the pro podium was Factory Beta’s Zane Roberts who had a couple get-off’s that cost him a little time, but also admitted he just wasn’t tracking his competition with as much speed. Due to a number of variables including the terrain and lappers, Roberts made the wise decision to set his own pace and finish the race without issue.

The Pro Women’s class had the benefit of racing the 1.5 hour morning race, being the first to touch the race course. This turned out to be a much appreciated benefit for the women. As the course saw more and more racers, the lines became more defined, making passing in some places nearly impossible. 2023 WHS season champion Gasgas Factory-supported racer Ava Silvestri came prepared to defend her

title. It is safe to say she accomplished her mission, running lap times as fast as the Pro Open class, at just over 21 minutes. Knowing with those times she would come in just under the 1.5 hourd on lap 4 (forcing everyone behind her to do another lap), the Pro racer strategically paced herself to slow down only slightly so she would finish just over the time limit at 1:30:26 unofficially. Not far behind her was Innteck KTM supported racer Rachel Stout, who got off to a great start and ran her own race, staying a comfortable distance in front of P3’s finisher Factory Beta Racing’s Britney Gallegos. Being the only racer in the Pro Women’s class on a two stroke, Gallegos felt she had the advantage with some of the sandy fast climbs up and down the Northern California terrain. The WHS Pro Women's class showcases some amazing talent in the off-road racing community, setting the stage for an exciting 2024 season.

The Pro 250 class saw some new faces mixed in with the usual subjects this round. Most notable performances this weekend include Layton Smail, bringing Factory Sherco USA into the WHS scene. Smail wasted no time letting the field know he is here to win, talking briefly at the press conference before the race on the positive changes the brand has made to his 2024 SEF 250 Factory ride. Considering his impressive finish of P1 in his class and P4 overall, we’d have to agree; the pair appears to be a match made in heaven. Finishing a little over a minute behind Layton was FMF RPM KTM Racing Team’s Jaden Dahners. Dahners stepped up to the factory supported team in 2024. Rounding the Pro 250 podium was Ryder Thomaselli, a longtime WHS racer who worked his way up through the ranks to find himself seated

on the Husqvarna Factory support team this season.

James McMurray raced his way to the top of the Pro Vet class this round, after some good battles with second place finisher Steve Roberts aboard his Yamaha. By the last lap Roberts had successfully made a pass on McMurray, only needing to progress the infamous Widowmaker steep downhill, and cruise to the finish. Unfortunately for him (but fortunately for James) a lapper got in the way of Roberts’ smooth progression, holding him up just enough for McMurray to make a last minute pass for the win. Rounding out the Pro Vet podium was Chase Rosenquist, who was celebrating his bachelor party over the weekend, and surprised himself with a podium finish considering the post-celebratory condition he was in. A special congrats to him and his fiancé!

Overall the experience at this year’s AMA West Hare Scramble season opener was one of massive fun and excitement. The premiere part of the course, "Widowmaker," was one the racers either came to love or hate, there really was no in-between.

Round two of the WHS is April 13th and 14th, in Jacksonville Oregon. Visit www.westharescrambles. com for more info, race registration, results, and live scoring.

The ARIZONA PEACE TRAIL

In a whirlwind of excitement and camaraderie, UTV Offroad Adventures embarked on a thrilling expedition through the Northern part of the Arizona Peace Trail. Over three unforgettable days, 23 UTVs carrying 48 eager adventurers traversed approximately 300 miles of this renowned off-highway vehicle trail system. It was an inaugural event that left all participants yearning for more, showcasing the allure and grandeur of Arizona's wilderness.

The Arizona Peace Trail, a 675-mile loop system nestled in the scenic landscapes of Mohave, La Paz, and Yuma counties in western Arizona, served as the backdrop for this epic adventure. Covering about half of the loop, the journey promised unparalleled vistas and boundless exploration.

The adventure commenced in the quaint town of Wickiup, AZ, as guests from near and far gathered for check-in. Among them was a traveler from as far as Washington, as well as, travelers from South Dakota, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona. With anticipation palpable in the air, the ride leader and tail gunner convened for a driver's meeting, setting the stage for the exhilarating days ahead.

Fueled by excitement, the expedition kicked off on Friday morning with a hearty breakfast at the Hidden Oasis RV Park restaurant, a welcoming oasis amidst the desert terrain. Here, participants fortified themselves for the adventures ahead, ensuring they were fully equipped for the journey with extra fuel, snacks, drinks, and rain gear.

Day 1 on the trail was a feast for the senses, with highlights including historic landmarks such as stone cabins, Founder's Cabin, and Woody's cabin, the Spider, alongside natural wonders like the

www.ssormag.com - APRIL 2024 - S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE 53

iconic London Bridge in Lake Havasu City. The morning rain bestowed upon the trail a pristine quality, eliminating any trace of dust and enhancing the scenic beauty of the surroundings.

As the day unfolded, the convoy made its way to the Quality Inn Hotel in Lake Havasu, where guests were treated to dinner and accommodations courtesy of UTV Offroad Adventures. After dinner there were raffles, story sharing, laughs, drinks and new friendships. With spirits high and memories in the making, participants retired for the night, eager for the adventures that awaited on Day 2.

And Day 2 did not disappoint. The journey continued towards Kingman, AZ unveiling a tapestry of sights including the enigmatic Hole in the Rock, small town of Oatman, AZ known for the many donkeys roaming the streets and the old west shootout, and natural wonders like slot canyons and flowing waterfalls.

The lunch stop was in Topock, AZ at the Topock 66 Restaurant on the beautiful Colorado River. High above the peaks are views of Laughlin, Nevada, Bullhead City, AZ and the Colorado River. The day's adventures culminated in Kingman, where the Best Western Plus awaited with dinner and restful accommodations. The charity poker

54 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - APRIL 2024 - www.ssormag.com

winner was announced and awarded their prize.

But the best was yet to come. Day 3 heralded an ascent into the majestic Hualapai Mountains, cloaked in a blanket of snow that shimmered in the morning light. With elevation reaching beyond 8,000 feet, the group embarked on an adrenaline-fueled ride through untouched trails, navigating hairpin turns and hill climbs amidst the breathtaking scenery. From Boriana Mine to a tranquil coy fish pond, the day was a crescendo of adventure and natural splendor. The ride went through Yucca, AZ capturing views of beautiful Joshua trees and ocotillo plants. From Yucca the trail led to the “Brutal Trail to Wickiup,” which the name says it all! The brutal trail was rough, rugged, rocky, tight, and at one point impassable. In addition, the weather moved in with rain and more snow. The ride leader called on the radio for “the big boys” to help move the giant boulder in the middle of the trail that fell from the recent wet weather. It took about five guys to move it.

As the expedition wound its way back to Wickiup, hearts were full, and memories were etched in the sands of time. The Northern part of the AZ Peace Trail had revealed its wonders, leaving participants with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of the Arizona wilderness and the spirit of adventure that binds us all.

In November 2024, UTV Offroad Adventures will complete the Southern Part of the AZ Peace Trail. Don’t miss out on a once in a lifetime adventure with UTV Offroad Adventures!

GARY SCOTT 1975 AMA Grand National Champion

Racing alongside his father at the International Six Days Gary Scott was one of the top AMA Grand National riders during the 1970s. He won the AMA Grand National Championship in 1975, was AMA Rookie of the Year in 1972, and finished in the top ten in Grand National competition for 12 consecutive years. Known as an excellent racing mechanic, Scott may be best remembered for his famous independent streak. When he left Harley-Davidson in a contract dispute after winning the championship in 1975, the split was one of the most publicized divorces in Grand National history.

Scott was born in San Gabriel, California, on January

19, 1952. The sons of an avid motorcyclist, Gary and younger brother, Hank, began riding mini-bikes at a young age. Hank would also go on to become a top AMA Grand National competitor during the '70s and '80s.

"My dad would take me and my brother out on the weekends," Scott recalls. "He would sit around and just relax while we were out riding the mini-bikes around. It wasn't competition at first, it was just something fun to do on the weekends."

While going to visit his aunt one day, Scott and his

56 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - APRIL 2024 - www.ssormag.com

family drove by Perris Raceway, a TT/Scrambles track where Gary's dad had previously raced. They stopped to check out the old track. Gary's dad knew the owner and he let Gary ride around a few laps.

"I guess the owner and my dad thought I looked safe enough going around the track, so they let me race there the next day," said Scott, who was 13 when he started racing. "I don't remember how I did. It wasn't very good, but that's how I got started motorcycle racing. From there, it seemed like I raced just about every weekend."

Scott progressed steadily through the ranks and became a top Southern California racer by the time he was 17. He took a job at Suzuki of Ontario so he could be closer to racing and to get discounts on parts. Scott also learned how to work on the bikes.

"My dad would take my brother and I to the races and give us the money to enter, but we were expected to do all the work on the bikes," Scott said.

Scott became a rookie expert in 1972.

That class turned out to be one of the most talented in AMA history. Along with Scott, Kenny Roberts and Mike Kidd also came on the Grand National scene that season. It was Scott who emerged that year as the best of the talented young crop of rookies. In one of the most amazing rookie seasons in the history of the series, Scott, riding a Triumph sponsored by a Los Angeles-area dealership, qualified for 21 of the 24 nationals, scored two wins, and was runner-up to factory Harley-Davidson rider Mark Brelsford. Scott earned AMA Rookie of the Year honors.

After his rookie year, Scott was again runner-up in the series for the next two seasons, finishing behind future

world champion roadracer Kenny Roberts. Scott didn't win any races in 1973, but came back to win three nationals in 1974 including a victory at the San Jose (California) Mile, his first win on a big track.

In 1974, Scott was signed by the Harley-Davidson factory team. He also moved his family to Ohio that year to be closer to the majority of the dirt track events. He won the championship while he was with Harley in 1975. That year, he beat his archrival Kenny Roberts and a new rookie sensation named Jay Springsteen to win the title.

After winning the championship, Scott got into a contract dispute with Harley-Davidson. Talks between Scott and Harley's racing manager, Dick O'Brien, broke down and

www.ssormag.com - APRIL 2024 - S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE 57

it was a shock to most when it was announced before the 1976 season that Scott would not be riding for the factory.

In 1976, Scott, now a privateer, was involved in an intense battle for the championship that came down to the top three riders, Scott, Roberts and Springsteen, who finished one-two-three the previous season. The championship was not decided until the final race, but this time it was Springsteen coming out on top.

During this period, Scott came to be known as a fiercely independent rider. A factory rider for two years, he became somewhat infamous for claiming numerous factory HarleyDavidson and Yamaha race bikes after he left the factory team. Scott says that he simply needed the bikes for parts, which he claimed were purposely being kept from him by the factory teams.

In terms of race wins, 1977 turned out to be Scott's most successful season. That year he earned six victories on the Grand National circuit. Despite the number of wins, Scott suffered through an inconsistent season and was ranked third at the end of the year.

Even though he consistently finished in the top 10 in the series standings, Scott's racing career went into a slow decline throughout the late '70s and early '80s. He did have one more shot at the title in 1981 when he finished just five points behind Mike Kidd in the championship chase.

Scott continued winning races until 1982. His last victory coming on the half-mile track in Hamburg, New York.

His final year in the AMA Grand National top 10 was 1983. Scott retired after the 1985 season having competed in 237 AMA nationals during his outstanding career.

In all, he won 19 Grand National races during his 13-year career and finished runner-up in the series an incredible five times, in addition to his one title.

After hanging up his racing leathers, Scott stayed involved in the sport for a few years managing a racing team, but was admittedly a poor spectator. Later, he got involved in commercial sport diving.

When inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, he and his wife, Donna, lived in the Phoenix area. They have one son, David.

Arizona Offroad Promotions continued their 2024 season with the Laughlin Extravaganza 5-Hour Team race, the first of the Team Race Series on February 24, 2024. Sixty-four teams showed up to test their endurance and battle the unforgiving rugged desert a short 10 miles from downtown Laughlin, Nevada. The teams, comprised of up to three riders, geared up for the ultimate endurance challenge: a 5-hour desert motorcycle team race. Months

of rigorous training, meticulous bike preparation, and strategic planning went into their quest for victory. With the scorching desert sun overhead and the unforgiving terrain ahead, they knew they were in for an intense battle. Those who chose to brave the task on their own, the Ironmen, were in for an even bigger challenge.

As the race commenced, adrenaline surged through the team's veins. Each starting rider mounted their high-performance motorcycle, ready to

conquer the rugged desert landscape. The roar of engines echoed across the hills as they embarked on their journey. The experts took off first, in a cloud of dust. They were quickly followed by the Vets, Seniors, Sportsmen, Family, Ironman, and Mini teams. Hole shots were of the utmost importance, as the single-track terrain made for difficult passing as the riders traversed the mountainous regions.

The initial hours of the race were a test of endurance and strategy, with

Ricky Brabec leading the pack from the get-go. Straight off his second Dakar Rally Cross championship, the Monster Energy Honda Team Rider dominated the field, racing the entire team race as a solo rider. The teams focused on finding their rhythm and navigating the rocky terrain with precision and agility. Team Yes Daddy from Payson, Arizona were at the head of the pack during the early stages of the race. Communication was key as the teams coordinated their movements, alerting each other to obstacles and changes in terrain. Nowhere was this more evident, than with the Scootin’ Newton Team, as they battled obstacle after obstacle, and still continued to thrive on the track. The blistering sun beat down upon them, but their determination remained unyielding.

With the finish line in sight, adrenaline surged

through the teams as they entered the final hour of the race. Fatigue threatened to slow their pace, but sheer willpower propelled them forward. Each member dug deep, summoning reserves of strength they never knew they possessed. Cheers erupted as they crossed the finish

line, triumphant and united in their achievement.

Ricky Brabec from Mohave Valley, AZ dominated the field and came out on top of the 64 teams that entered the race. Team Desert Ready Mix from Glendale, AZ came in second, followed by Team 1 Pump from Needles, CA.

Valley Boyz Racing from Holtville, CA, Team Phillips from Needles, CA, Team Yes Daddy from Payson, AZ, Rogue Moto Prescott, Team Chicken Burgers, Team Tres Amigos, and Team Purvines Racing of Las Vegas, NV all finished in the top 10 overall, all racing in the Expert class.

The Sportsman class was won by Team RLK from Flagstaff, AZ, followed closely by Team Buster Scruggs from Cameron, Team Full Send from Mesa, AZ, and Team KRG Racing from Blythe, CA. Team Unfit to Participate rounded out the top five Sportsmen.

Team Flipmode from Lake Havasu, AZ won the Vet 35+ class, just fending off Team Werd Racing from Flagstaff. Team FCA MX from Phoenix came in third place, with Team Dialed Racing from Las Vegas in fourth, and Team Rockstar Drop from Scottsdale in fifth.

The Senior 50+ teams showed that they could hang with the rest of the field, with Team Vance Vance out of Peoria, AZ winning the class and finishing 11th overall. Team Crusty Skid Marks from Surprise, AZ took second place in the class with an impressive finish.

The Family Class was won by Team Trubey Racing from Henderson, NV. Team Accuracy from Tonto Basin, AZ took second place, and Team Barnumpro from Chandler, AZ took third

in class. Hot on their tails was Team Scootin’ Newton from Parker, AZ in fourth place, and Team Mullet Men from Prescott in fifth.

The Ironman class had an impressive field, with 13 total entrants entered to face the entire five hours on their own. Ironman Hunger Guiboa from Lake Havasu took first place, followed by Ironman Collin H from Flagstaff, Ironman Kick Till Monday from Henderson, NV, Ironman Smallcanyon from Navajo Mountain, and Ironman Icester from Mohave Valley all rounding out the top five competitors in class. Ironman Tanner Sutton from Williams, Arizona was quite impressive, going out on his mini-bike to take on the entire course for five hours.

The 5-hour Laughlin Extravaganza motorcycle team race had tested the riders in ways they never imagined, but they emerged victorious, united in their triumph over the elements. As they packed up their gear and bid farewell to the desert, they carried with them memories of an unforgettable adventure and the knowledge that they were capable of conquering any challenge that lay ahead.

Bills

The California bill introduction deadline has passed and all the bills for the year are available for the legislature and public to see. I met with our state lobbyist recently to describe what types of bills we are concerned with. I told him to flag bills that have to do with transportation, State Parks and resources (environment).

Out of the thousands of bills introduced, he found 28 that may affect us. Out of those we will be keeping an eye on a dozen and will be giving a position on two bills. The bill from last year having to do with red sticker bikes is officially dead. That was SB708 from Brian Jones and would have had State Parks issue registration stickers to racing motorcycles that don't quality for green stickers. The only good news related to red sticker bikes is that next year they will all transition to green stickers, opening all seasons and areas to these bikes.

Bill AB3163 will reduce or eliminate fees for vets and active-duty

military for entry into State parks. This includes State Vehicular Recreation Areas that usually cost $5 to enter. We support this bill to help our miliary and vet friends.

Bill SB903 will prohibit the use of PSAF chemicals in the state. ROHVA (Recreational Off Highway Vehicle Association), boating and other groups are opposing this bill because boats and off-road vehicles have a lot of these chemicals in their construction and banning would have a very negative effect on our activities. We are opposing this bill and joining with a larger coalition that opposes it.

I am personaly interested in watching bill AB2392. This bill will exempt the on road motorcycle helmet law for people wearing turbans or Patkas.

We have been planning another expo similar to last summer's jamboree, but we hit a couple snags. We chose the date June 22 to have it at the Diane Jacobs Equestrian Center. A little later, we found out that

AI Can’t Replace Hands-On Training For Four-Wheeling

With AI (artificial intelligence) in the news so much today, I thought I’d try a little experiment. I was curious as to what extent the program (ChatGBT) could teach what I teach. Ultimately, could AI replace me (and the other trainers)?

The answer is no, but AI does offer valuable information at times. That information can supplement what is gleaned from other sources.

My experiment with AI

After logging in, I typed this request: “Write an article as a quiz on four-wheel drive concepts.”

I’ll give the program credit for quickly – and I mean quickly – providing the article. But the questions in the quiz weren’t as strong as I would’ve liked. And at least one answer was wrong.

One question ChatGBT created was, “What is the term for the ability of a vehicle to climb steep inclines without losing traction?” Possible answers included:

The correct answer, according to the program was C, rock crawling.

Really? That doesn’t make sense to me.

Another question asked what the recommended tire pressure was for off-road driving. Answers included “higher than usual” and “lower than usual.”

“Lower than usual” was given as the correct answer. Well, sure, but that’s not very helpful.

Let’s get more specific. Something like “tire pressure of 15 – 18 psi” would be a good answer.

For background purposes, a quiz or test is fine. But to truly learn and master four-wheeling, one must get out there and drive. It’s impossible to develop a cookbook to cover all conditions and obstacles encountered off road. Even AI can’t do that.

Ham radio offers a good analogy. A person could become licensed by studying the question pool and taking online practice exams. While some questions may cover on-air practices, the only way to learn how to operate is to get on the air – ideally with a ham radio operator acting as a mentor.

That is the case with four-wheeling. Study all you want, but then sign up for training. Follow up by going off-road and putting that training into action.

Being involved ensures highest retention rates

People learn material in a variety of ways. Some like to read. Others prefer a verbal format. Some learn best in a verbal/visual format. Research shows that retention rates are highest when participants are involved in the activity. Doing is more effective than studying. Check out this graphic above.

Note that simply reading about the topic results in 10% retention. Retention rates climb dramatically the more involved the person is. Retention is as high as 90% when individuals perform the action.

Don’t get me wrong: I believe in reading to learn. (Do a lot of that myself.) I’ve been publishing these articles for more than 15 years. In addition, I offer various handouts during my courses. Those handouts augment my presentations and the techniques I demonstrate.

Numerous books have been written about 4WD. I’m a big fan of Jim Allen’s work. He, along with James Weber, wrote “The Four-Wheeler’s Bible: The Complete Guide to Off-Road and Overland Adventure.” Everyone attending my basic classes gets a copy.

The written word accomplishes only so much. As

you can see from the graph, retention is greatest when participants put that knowledge into action.

Just one example: Four-wheelers need to know how to pick lines. Drivers simply can’t learn that by reading about it somewhere.

Artificial intelligence is here to stay. It’s becoming an integral part of our lives and businesses. Whether that’s ultimately good or bad remains to be seen. As for fourwheeling, the information gleaned from AI can augment what is taught through other means.

Learning four-wheeling necessarily involves handson training. That training helps cement the principles and techniques in the drivers’ minds. Regular off-roading further reinforces what was learned in class.

Tom Severin, 4x4 Coach, teaches 4WD owners how to confidently and safely use their vechicles to the fullest extent in difficult terrain and adverse driving conditions.
