FROM THE PRESIDENT AND HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Schechter Community,

S

olomon Schechter Day School is blessed to have strong supporters who give of their time, energy, wisdom and wealth to ensure that our school will continue to create self-confident, passionate, practicing Jews who are prepared for their academic and professional future and committed to making the world a better place. Our faculty and staff, parents, alumni and friends contribute to the success of our school and the warmth of our community by teaching, volunteering, fundraising and celebrating with us. We want to thank each and every one of you for doing your part. Schechter is a premier Jewish independent school that provides an outstanding academic program in a nurturing environment in which every child is known, understood and celebrated. We are proud to be a part of a school that: • has dedicated faculty who are committed to the development of each and every child – their minds, bodies, hearts and souls • invests substantially in educational technology to support differentiated instruction • celebrates the exceptional achievement of its students compared to those in private schools nationwide on standardized tests

We are energized by the enthusiasm of our community and look forward to sharing more with you during the new school year.

• utilizes its own nationally-recognized Hebrew language proficiency program to build important early second language acquisition skills which support future academic success • welcomes families from a variety of towns, countries of origin, religious observance and socio-economic levels, thereby creating a diverse and vibrant community Over the past few months, we have been working together to determine how to build upon these strengths and set the stage for the important work ahead of making Schechter even better. Together with dedicated members of the Board of Trustees and Hanhallah (Administration), we have begun to envision the strategic initiatives that will guide Schechter into the future. We want to express our deepest appreciation to our predecessors Arnold Zar-Kessler and Andria Weil for their contributions to Schechter and for enabling us to make a smooth transition into our new roles. We are energized by the enthusiasm of this community and look forward to working with you during the new school year. In the meantime, we encourage you to read this issue of Hadashot Schechter with pride and to look back on the wonderful year gone by. L’shalom,

Rabbi Elliot Goldberg Head of School

Lauri Union President, Board of Trustees 1

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FUTURE: Schechter Becomes a Beneficiary of a Charitable Life Insurance Gift

S

chechter parents Lauri Union, Board President, and Stanley Rosenzweig have been thinking about the legacy they wish to leave their children, their future grandchildren and the greater Boston Jewish community. Reflecting on their children’s experience at Schechter, Lauri shared that, “Through its values-based education, emphasis on critical thinking, high level of Jewish literacy, early second-language learning and more, Schechter is having a tremendous impact on our children – something they can’t get anywhere else.” With this thinking in mind, Lauri and Stan have purchased a charitable life insurance policy of which Schechter will be the owner and beneficiary. Stan explained, “We are passionate about Jewish education and feel strongly that every family who wants a high quality Jewish education for its children should be able to have access to one. It’s our responsibility to use the resources we have to make sure that happens.” Over the next 20 years, Lauri and Stan will pay the policy’s premium through an annual gift to the school. Upon Lauri’s passing, Schechter will receive a gift of $1 million to establish a named endowment in her and Stan's name. For donors accustomed to making an annual gift, life “Schechter will not insurance gifts guarantee their annual gift in perpetuity. Through Schechter’s survive and be the high participation in the Generations Campaign, outright and legacy endowment quality, premier school gifts directed toward financial aid for middle-tier families – including gifts like that we want it to be this – will be matched in part by a generous donor. without people looking For Lauri and Stan, knowing their gift would be matched made this decision even more compelling. “We considered a number of institutions when learning more about this type of charitable gift policy, but when we thought about Schechter and the impact the school has had on our children, the decision was very clear,” Lauri explained. “It’s become increasingly important to us to ensure that the school will be here for the next generation.”

beyond the short term and into the future; that’s why we’re doing this. We’re here to do whatever we can to make a difference.”

“The nature of the lives we lead is short term,” Stan concluded. “Schechter will not survive and be the high quality, premier school that we want it to be without people looking beyond the short term and into the future; that’s why we’re doing this. We’re here to do whatever we can to make a difference.” Lauri and Stan have been very involved in the parent and volunteer community at Schechter since their oldest child enrolled in kindergarten. Lauri assumed the role of President this past May. Reflecting on her involvement, Lauri said she “saw an amazing school at which I wanted to make an impact; and now, stepping into the role as President along with our new head of school, Rabbi Elliot Goldberg, I’m particularly excited. There are so many wonderful things we’ll be working on. The future is, indeed, very exciting and very bright.” For more information on life insurance gifts, bequests or about the Generations Campaign, contact Natalie Matus, Associate Head of School for Institutional Advancement, at natalie.matus@ssdsboston.org or 617-630-4617.

Voices from the Class of 2014 / 5774 Eden Abotbool

Schechter has taught me the definition of community. Through the Schechter production of Aladdin, I came together with new people and we learned to help and support each other. Not only have we known each other for nine years, but during those years, we have become a family.

Noam Borensztajn

I loved being able to be on a school sports team with my classmates. Being on a team helped me to learn how to work with other people.

Jessica Brown

Imagine being in the very hall where a country was born. Imagine walking on a street that has been there for a thousand years. Imagine actually being able to speak and interact with other Jews our age. I am so glad that Schechter has given us the opportunity to go to Israel and experience these things and more.

Jason Bryer

By participating in Aladdin, I learned to escape my comfort zone and experience new things along with my lifelong friends. Succeeding in singing, dancing and acting on stage in front of hundreds of people was really gratifying.

Lihi Cohen

When I went on the Israel trip with all my friends, we became closer as a whole and as a family. What I will miss most about Schechter is the comfortable and kind environment which welcomed me in fourth grade and made it easy for me to build strong friendships with the people I now call my best friends.

Shoshana Coleman

My Schechter education has taught me many things academically and socially. I was welcomed into the community with open arms and was pushed to do my best in all my subjects.

Alexander Crystal

I will miss being in a community where I have made tons of friends. In this community I know that everyone looks out for one another.

Samuel Denbow

Being on the Israel trip with all my friends let me appreciate the community we have at Schechter. No matter what high school we go to, we will always be family.

Ilana Deykin

Through my nine years at Schechter, I have not only gained lifelong friends, but have learned the value of working with others. Schechter fosters a learning environment in which students are encouraged to share their own ideas while being able to work and think together.

Kayla Dines

Being part of the Israel Study Tour has proven to me that no matter what happens I have 41 friends who constantly watch my back. Schechter has taught me that hard work always pays off. I am truly thankful that I have been given the gift of a Jewish education.

Joseph Duke-Cohan

Schechter has provided me with an excellent foundation for a Jewish life. With this valuable education, I plan to continue expanding my knowledge and live a Jewish life.

Shelly Edry

Through being on the sports teams at Schechter, I have learned that there is no “I” in “team” and that we have to help each other at all times. Being part of this Jewish community taught me that we always have to be there for each other and stick up for each other.

Joshua Finkel

Elliot Kann

I have learned many things over the past nine years, but one thing that really stands out is that we are each special in different ways. At Schechter we became a stronger community by building upon and appreciating each other’s unique talents and interests.

From being part of the Aladdin stage crew, I saw how our grade was able to work together to create a great performance. Our amazing eighth grade community was able to make all the practices and hard work pay off in front of the rest of our Schechter “family.”

Anna Fischer

Noah Krispin

On the Israel Study Tour, the counselors organized many activities for us. Learning to laugh at myself and enjoy time with my peers made me feel closer to my grade than I ever had before.

Isaac Gorelik

I will be taking many great memories from Schechter including the Israel Study Tour which was fun and meaningful. I will also remember the undefeated soccer season because we came together as a team and we made it happen for the first time in 18 years.

Visiting Har Herzl with my classmates and seeing our united respectfulness demonstrated a real sense of Jewish community to me. Our many years together culminated in the Israel Study Tour during which we learned of the value of community in action.

Having the opportunity to learn and observe Jewish practice day in and day out is something that I am very fortunate to have. Schechter has given me the proper tools to continue Jewish practices for the rest of my life.

Robert Hodin

Benjamin Lehv

Going to Israel with my grade has given me a real sense of community and brought me closer to my friends whom I consider my family.

Ethan Hollop

Schechter has taught me how to be part of a community because if you are part of a team, you can accomplish anything. For example, the boys’ soccer team was undefeated for the first time in 18 years.

Eitan Joseph

Being on the Schechter soccer team was a great experience. All my friends and I played on the same pitch and were undefeated.

Jonah Lecker

When I joined the Schechter soccer team, I was skeptical. However, we created a winning squad through the power of community and we showed everyone that community matters.

Rebecca Levy

Throughout my nine years at Schechter I have experienced many new adventures. I was able to experience some of the most memorable moments in my life with my best friends. I know that the bonds I have created with these people will last me forever because family is forever.

Gabrielle Marcus

During our community service project in Israel, my classmates and I were able to package over 1,000 bags of rice for families in need. This event further proved that our Schechter community is truly one of a kind. When we are all together, we can achieve amazing things and make a lasting impact.

4

Jenna Margolis

Schechter has given me many opportunities in the arts. These experiences have set a foundation for my future creative pursuits.

Hadas Maroun

When I traveled to the Kotel in Jerusalem I witnessed thousands of young women singing and dancing. This experience made me realize how grateful I am for being part of the world’s Jewish community. Schechter is one of my Jewish homes and so is Israel.

Malkah Pinals

Through the Israel Study Tour I felt an even greater sense of community being with all of my friends. Having the opportunity to be with them for such a long time was definitely worth it because friendships expanded and we all got closer.

Hallie Popkin

Being part of a Jewish community means being part of a second family. One time when our community was evident was in Israel when we went on an archeological dig. All of the students and teachers stood in a line passing buckets of pottery to the top of the cave. By helping each other, one by one, each bucket was passed until it reached the end of the assembly line.

Zachary Roberts

Lauren Sasson

While at the Kotel during the Israel trip, I realized what an enormous impact my Schechter education had on me. Even though we are all moving on to another chapter of our lives, my years with teachers and friends here have instilled moral and religious values that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Benjamin Schneider

Aladdin provided me with a unique experience in which my friends and I could create a story for everyone to see. I enjoyed saying jokes as my character and appreciated the acting of others and the crew’s hard work.

Benjamin Schwartz

Through Aladdin, I was introduced to a whole new world. I wouldn’t have been able to perform without the support from my friends and teachers. Schechter has taught me that when people work together anything is possible.

Rachel Selvin

My experience at Schechter has been an unforgettable one. No question went unanswered, problem unsolved or friend not made.

Shoham Shitrit

I’ve learned a lot during my time at Schechter, but being part of the Jewish community has been the most rewarding. It gave me the opportunity to meet people from many different Jewish backgrounds.

When I think of Schechter, I think of the warm friends that I consider family. This family impacted my early adulthood by influencing me to have a joyful, meaningful life.

Marissa Rosenzweig

Levi Shlyankevich

After learning about Israel and Jewish life for nine years at Schechter, going to Israel made me realize the importance of everything I have studied. I am so thankful to be a part of the Schechter community and I am proud to have it as my second family.

The importance of a Schechter education will stay with me for the rest of my life. On top of the great general studies education, we are given the gift of a Jewish education. Knowing Hebrew, Tanakh and Toshba will stay with me throughout high school and into adulthood. continued on page 6

5

Rachel Siegel

Even though I have been to Israel many times, when I went with my Schechter friends this past year it was a completely different experience. Schechter has not only given me an amazing education, but it also helped me create my second family.

Benjamin Silverstone

Gabriel Weis

My involvement in the eighth-grade play, Aladdin, was a very memorable experience. It really helped me to learn to work as part of a team with my friends and peers and it was one of the many milestones this year that really brought our grade together and tightened our bond as a community.

Gabriella Smith

During my nine years at Schechter I have not only established a love for Torah study and Hebrew, but also formed strong friendships with my classmates and a great community that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

6

Danielle Smolyar

From going on the Israel Study Tour we learned the importance of coming together and working as one. At the archeological dig, we needed to pass up the buckets full of dirt in an assembly line and every person had a special role in the line.

The Israel Study Tour connected me to my religion and made me proud to be Jewish. Walking in the steps of my forefathers made me part of something bigger.

Sarah Winn

In the past nine years at Schechter we have learned about Israel and the importance of a Jewish community. I think that going to Israel was a culmination of what I have learned at Schechter. Being a student at Schechter has given me Jewish and moral values that are the basis of who I am and will stay with me for the rest of my life. â–

Schechter Alumni Speak Out

L

ast spring Schechter conducted an alumni survey in an effort to learn more about its alumni community. A web-link to the survey was sent to all alumni for whom the school has email addresses, and over 300 responses were submitted, a 29 percent response rate. While not a true random sample, the results provide great insight into Schechter’s alumni community. Schechter alumni are very well-educated with 48 percent having completed advanced degrees (master’s or higher) in a range of fields and areas of study. Schechter alumni have strong ties to the Jewish community: 85 percent have volunteered with a Jewish organization within the last five years; 37 percent have worked or currently work in the Jewish community; 41 percent give 50 percent or more of their philanthropic donations to Jewish organizations; and 50 percent have made a gift to Schechter within the last five years.

Nate Black ’07, Ben Pankin ’07, Alyssa Bickoff ’07 and Rafi Goldman ’07 joined Schechter classmate Danny Lebowitz ’07 on his wedding day

Alumni reunion in Los Angeles at the home of Lee Eisenberg ’91 10

The majority (63 percent) of respondents are 22-40 years old, 22 percent are ages 14-21 and 15 percent are over 40. Sixty-nine percent have children. Our alumni are spread out geographically living in places far and near: 48 percent live in Massachusetts, 16 percent live in New York, 4 percent live in Israel and the remainder are spread throughout North America.

Schechter graduates are in agreement that Schechter laid the foundation for their Jewish identity and success in high school, college and beyond. Here are some of their responses: “I had a great experience at Schechter, I learned many Jewish skills and my Hebrew language was excellent as a result of the school. We have a daughter at Schechter now and the school has been wonderful for her.” “Schechter is a nurturing community and an excellent education; it is where I grew up and where I made most of my best friends.”

“Schechter gave me a wonderful and supportive community in which to grow up and learn about both Judaism and the wider world. It fostered lasting friendships and a curiosity and excitement for learning. The teachers at Schechter are incredibly talented, caring, and hardworking and prepared me well for my future education.”

“The choices I have made in my life have come from the values Schechter has instilled in me.Those values continue to influence my children. Schechter proves that a child can grow up to be a knowledgeable, committed Jew whose moral character is informed by Jewish principles while also claiming his or her place as a citizen of the world.” “Schechter gave me a strong Jewish identity as a child that stayed with me throughout adulthood. I still remember fondly the experiences – both Jewish and secular – that helped shape who I am today.” Some alumni shared concern about the rising costs of day school education. Schechter is proud to award financial aid to over 50 percent of its students. Schechter has a menu of programs, including its innovative iCap program, to make Schechter accessible. Visit our website to learn more. For more information about our survey, or to add your email so that the alumni office can include you in any future surveys or communications, please email alumni@ssdsboston.org.

Grandparents’ and Special Visitors’ Day 2014

T

his is truly one of my favorite days of the school year,” shared former head of school, Arnold Zar-Kessler, referring to Schechter’s annual Grandparents’ and Special Visitors’ Day, at which the school welcomed over 500 guests. “The love expressed on the faces of children and their special visitors – the anticipation of the day, acceptance of one for the other and the deep, ongoing connection between them – is so palpable that it simply lifts the spirits of everyone within view.” Guests were treated to musical performances, crafts, stories, games and special time with their loved ones throughout the day. Students were thrilled to welcome their grandparents and special visitors to Schechter.

In his remarks, Zar-Kessler spoke to the audience about the school’s commitment to “what really endures,” far more, he explained, than the outstanding academic excellence and successful alumni track record the school boasts. “When we open our doors each day, we are thinking about linking a great tradition to a wonderful future. The children are the future that connects with our past in a meaningful way.”

Honoring

Arnie

an evening to celebrate our head of school

W

hat a remarkable evening! Last June, Schechter celebrated Arnold Zar-Kessler’s 21 years at Schechter with 600 Schechter alumni, alumni parents, current parents, grandparents, current and former faculty and staff and friends. The evening was filled with special tributes; thoughtful gifts for our honoree from our students, school and Parent Association; inspirational musical performances by our students and teachers; and reunions of old friends. Andria Weil, Schechter’s Board of Trustees president, announced that with the support of 341 donors, our community raised $170,665 for the Arnold Zar-Kessler Endowment Fund for the Jewish Future which will be matched by an additional $85,335 from a generous donor, bringing the total to $256,000 so far. Mazal tov and thank you, Arnie, for 21 inspirational years. We look forward to seeing you at Grandparents’ and Special Visitors’ Day and hopefully on many days in between in the carpool lane!

Schechter Announces Recipients of the First Annual Outstanding Alumni Award

S

chechter has named Rabbi Ilana Garber ’91 and Dr. Mitchell Schwaber ’78 as recipients of the school’s inaugural Arnold Zar-Kessler Outstanding Alumni Award. Created in 2014, the alumni award is given in honor of outgoing head of school, Arnold Zar-Kessler, and his 21 years of dedication to and leadership of Solomon Schechter Day School.

Rabbi Ilana Garber ’91 was selected for her leadership, commitment and compassion for Hartford, Connecticut’s Jewish community through her work both at her synagogue, Beth El Temple, and in the wider community. Garber was nominated by Dr. Vera Schwarcz, a professor at Wesleyan University. She wrote, “Ilana’s credibility is very high precisely because she embodies the ideals of a Solomon Schechter alumna: she leads by example with deep dignity and compassion for all. This is truly a rare gift and so many of us are privileged to have benefited from her transformative vision of what it means to be a Jewish woman, a rabbi and a community leader.” Dr. Mitchell Schwaber ’78 was selected for his accomplishments as a world-renowned expert and scholar in the field of infection control. Schwaber is the director of the National Center for Infection Control of the Israel Ministry of Health, practices internal and infectious diseases medicine at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and Maccabi Healthcare Services and serves on the faculty of the University of Tel Aviv Sackler School of Medicine. He was nominated by his brother, Glen Schwaber ’83, who shared that, “Mitch lives a life of mitzvot, midot and learning within a community that he himself helped build in Modi’in, has served the State of Israel and humanity in international relief efforts and consistently puts the happiness and well-being of others ahead of his own personal needs every single day.” About the honorees, Zar-Kessler shared, “Ilana and Mitch exemplify Schechter’s mission in their work, in their communities and in their families. We are thrilled to be able to recognize them this way.” Garber and Schwaber were presented with an award at the school’s eighth-grade graduation in June at Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Chestnut Hill. The Arnold Zar-Kessler Outstanding Alumni Award will be presented annually to an alumna/us whose life embodies Schechter’s vision and mission. Nominations are due to the school each year by March 15. Email nominations to alumni@ssdsboston.org.

his past year was a memorable one. As we said goodbye to our longtime friend and leader, Arnold Zar-Kessler, and other outstanding long-time teachers, we welcomed Rabbi Elliot Goldberg into our community and have since begun a new chapter. We also, with your generous help, managed to raise our highest total ever for the annual campaign, more than 1.4 million dollars. For that, we thank you. We held two wonderful evening programs in appreciation of our donors: Chris Wyett and Lisa Resnek Wyett hosted Erev Nedevim in December and Paul Greenberg and Marla Choslovsky hosted the Honor Society Reception in March, which was highlighted by a spirited discussion between Arnie and Rabbi Elan Babchuk ’96 on the Pew Report on religion in America and what it means to the Jewish community. While we did not achieve our goal of 100 percent parent participation we will continue to work to that end. This Pictured (left to right): achievement Ben Loewenberg and Abby will allow us Sosland with Dan Backer, to continue to VP of Development provide an outstanding Jewish education for anyone who wishes to have one, a most worthy endeavor if ever there was one. The support we receive from you is critical to the sustainability of our community and we look forward to your ongoing support.

Providing the best education possible

Science Fair 2014

“Helping to achieve educational excellence for the children in the Schechter community is a priority for us. Providing the best education possible for our children is one of the most valuable gifts that we can give to them.” – Barbara and Ellis Morris, Schechter parents Schechter is proud to participate in Generations, a national initiative to provide long-term sustainability for Jewish day schools by helping them grow their endowments. The Generations Campaign raises funds through both outright and legacy gifts. There are many ways to give through this campaign – through an outright gift to the endowment, by making a bequest, designating Schechter as beneficiary of your IRA, gifting a life insurance policy or establishing a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust. The Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) and the Avi Chai Foundation are partnering with us in this program. To learn how you can help strengthen the school for generations to come, please contact Natalie Matus, Associate Head of Institutional Advancement at (617) 630-4617. 23

“I give to Schechter because as both an alumna and a current Schechter parent I have the opportunity each day to see how Schechter provides a positive, supportive and intellectually vibrant framework within which children can develop as citizens both of the Jewish community and the world at large.” – Aliza Phillips-Stoll ‘89, Schechter parent

“I view donations to Schechters as an investment in our children. Our best hope for a thriving Jewish community is educating the next generation in our religion, ethics and culture.” – Jay Pearlstein, alumni parent

JACOB’S LADDER SOCIETY

M

embers of the Jacob’s Ladder Society are individuals or couples who indicate that they have made provision for the school through their estate plan for the benefit of future generations of children. When the legacy gifts are realized by the school, they become part of the school’s endowment.

With the establishment of Jacob’s Ladder Society, planned giving has become an important vehicle for supporting the school alongside Annual and Capital or Endowment Giving. Members of the Society are listed below. To learn more about how to make a legacy gift and join the Jacob’s Ladder Society, please contact Natalie Matus, Associate Head of School for Institutional Advancement at 617-630-4617 or natalie.matus@ssdsboston.org.
