B E YO N D T H E C L A S S R O O M AT S C H E C H T E R Welcome to the winter session of Afterschool! We have had a great fall season and look forward to an exciting winter program! Schechter’s Afterschool Program is designed to foster student curiosity, exploration and experimentation as an approach to learning. Our goal is to develop confident, curious learners eager to explore their interests. In the following pages you will find information about all our winter afterschool programs including Enrichment Classes, Afterschool Hour, Music Lessons and Extended Day.

Sign up for HANDS-ON STEAM PROGRAMS that promote innovative thinking and creative problem solving. Little Coders (K-1) use visual blocks to program Ozobots while in Science Studio (1-3), students test out ideas and inventions in a maker space environment. Lego Simple Machines (2-3) offers an engineering class using Legos. For grades 4-5 we offer Computer Art and Making Things, a class in which students learn to design 2D and 3D art, as well as Minecraft Modding (4-5), a great way for students to learn programming. Students will design custom textures, build amazing structures, give their players new abilities and, depending on experience, even create their own mini-games all while learning JavaScript.

AFTERSCHOOL AT SCHECHTER Extended Day For families who need their children to stay at Schechter at the end of the school day for the full afternoon, the Extended Day program is the best option. This program offers a dynamic array of activities as well as time for free play and socializing. Please email Greg Hampton at greg.hampton@ssdsboston.org for more information. Afterschool Hour Afterschool Hour is for families who want to have their children stay at Schechter for only one hour after the regular school day ends. Children can join our exciting extended day activities, enjoy supervised free play or take the time to socialize with friends. This is a more open alternative to enrichment classes. Does your child like to climb on the rock wall or challenge himself or herself climbing up the ropes in the gym? If so, Coach Matt is offering a climb class for Grades 1-3 filled with adventure and fun.

BASKETBALL: grades 2-3..............................................$250 Rudy Crichlow Join Coach Rudy in a season of basketball! This class is geared for the student who loves basketball and wants to improve his or her skills. The class will consist of drills to develop shooting skills and ball handling techniques. Each session students will play a game! Rudy Crichlow, an elite basketball coach and the owner of Mass Commanders, will teach this class.

HIPSTITCH: HAND AND MACHINE SEWING: grades 1-3......................................................................... $285 Hipstitch Let’s get creative together and learn a new skill. We will teach you how to use a sewing machine and how to hand-sew. Make a cute pillow, totebag, winter accessories and more. This is an 8-week class which will run from Monday, January 13-March 16.

We will use hands-on exploration activities, movement and play, crafts and stories to investigate the natural world around us. We will be outside and moving as we explore. Join us in presenting the iconic Boston story of a pair of mallards who decide to raise their family on an island in the lagoon in Boston Public Garden. Our young actors will learn about story-making, character development and on-stage performance skills (confidence, projection, movement and more). There will be a final performance for friends and family Tuesday, March 24! KARATE: BEGINNERS: grades 1-2................................. $225 Daryl Hinthorne Training in the martial arts builds strong bodies and values. Children gain flexibility, balance and strength as they learn the elements of martial arts. Focus, concentration, listening and respect are stressed. This class is open to newcomers, white and yellow belts. SCIENCE STUDIO: I.D.E.A.s grades 1-3.........................$245 Steve Lechner Participate in this open science studio focused on students, I.D.E.A.s. (Inventions, Discoveries, Experiments, Activities). This workshop will include building and construction kits/ toys, take-apart machine space, a science kit center, movie making and a design center. This is not a traditional led-by-the teacher afterschool class, but a more childdirected program in which the students decide what to do based on their own interests and ideas. In this class, Mr. Steve will work as a coach and mentor guiding students through their learning experiences with advice and ideas. If you are looking for a “maker-space” environment to test out your ideas and inventions, this is the place for you!

Where else can you curl up with a good story and then bring a piece of it to life with your own hands? Each week reveals a new adventure with a story and an art project featuring Model Magic, paint, stamps, paper creations and much more! All new stories and projects!

Amazing artists are those who like to make art, try out new things, advance in skill and have lots of fun! Small class size means that each student will receive individual guidance and do projects that are beyond what is offered in the Lower School Art Program. Artists will sculpt with clay, paint on a large and small scale, draw with charcoal and more. We will be going on “art safaris� within the Lower School to find and sketch interesting things to paint later. Amazing artists will leave the class with exhibit-worthy artwork and a sense of pride! Students will have an art reception and exhibit in our Lower School Art Gallery on the last day of class.

YOUNG CHEFS: grades 1-3.............................................$250 Sharon Wanunu Have fun in the kitchen while making (and eating!) your favorite foods. Our young chefs will learn to make a dip, a shake, a main dish, a dessert and more while developing kitchen skills such as measuring, pouring, cracking eggs and rolling dough. Students work in pairs so that everyone follows the recipes from start to finish. This class is a great way to learn the basics of football, improve skills and enjoy playing the game! Flag football is taught by Valeo Futbol Club Coach Jared Lewis.

Robotics for Little Coders with Ozobots is an opportunity for young children to develop their computational thinking skills, build their first programs and have fun with new friends! Ozobot’s programming is designed specifically for early readers, taking into account the cognitive abilities and typical attention span of children ages 5-7. Students are introduced to basic coding concepts with simple tasks such as customizing their Ozobot and assigning commands through different colors, then building up to more complex tasks with Ozobot’s simple drag-and-drop language.

This is the perfect class to explore your inner and outer artist. In a fun studio atmosphere students will work with wood to construct a variety of art pieces learning to distress and stain the wood. They will also explore a variety of other art techniques and materials focusing on projects, materials and techniques that most inspire them.

Travel to the city of Agrabah with the street rat who becomes a prince! All of your favorite characters – Aladdin, Jasmine, Iago, Jafar, the Genie and more – are here in a musical adventure filled with magic and mystery. Students will learn singing, dancing and acting techniques alongside teammwork skills and confidence. Sets, costumes and lights prepare students for a fantastic performance! COMPUTER PROGRAMMING: MINECRAFT MODDING: grades 4-5........................................................................$295 Calling all Minecrafters! Building Minecraft mods is a great way to learn programming, harness creativity and enhance problem-solving skills while making your favorite game even better. Each student will get to run his or her own Minecraft server. Students can customize the game with their own world maps and features. E X T E N D E D D AY P R O G R A M Extended Day offers students in PreKindergarten through Grade 8 an array of supervised activities as well as time for free play and socializing until 6:15 p.m. (grades PreK-3) or 6:30 p.m. (grades 4-8) each day with earlier dismissal on Fridays based on Shabbat. Registration for Extended Day takes place through the SchechterHub. Forms for Extended Day registration will be available on your account. Billing for Extended Day is processed through Smart Tuition together with regular core Day School tuition. Extended Day families who register their child for an enrichment class (on a day that she/he is registered for extended day) will receive a credit for that hour of Extended Day (at your billable rate). Families with two working parents who receive financial aid for tuition are also eligible to Semester receive financial aid for ExtendedSpring Day tuition.
