Sir Robert Woodard Academy December 2014 Newsletter As we come to the end of yet another exciting term and approach Christmas, I am reminded of a famous Russian folk tale about an old woman called Baboushka which I would like to share with you. An old woman sat alone in her cottage, beside a fire. Outside, the wind howled. Snow blanketed the earth and the ice-covered branches crackled. The old woman was glad that she was snug and warm and did not have to go out into the cold. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. When she opened it, three old men entered wearing richly coloured robes and carrying gifts. They told Baboushka they had travelled far to visit a baby Prince who was to be born that very night in Bethlehem and they invited Baboushka to go with them. But Baboushka did not want to leave her cosy, warm cottage and so the three travellers continued alone on their journey. Thinking of the baby Prince, Baboushka could not sleep, so in the morning she filled her basket with toys for the child and set out to find him. Baboushka travelled far and wide, searching for the baby Prince; but she never found the child. She asked many people the way, but no-one could help her. In Russia, they say she is still searching, and that on Christmas Eve, when children are fast asleep, Baboushka comes, carrying her basket from which she takes a present for each child. Unlike Baboushka, at the Sir Robert Woodard Academy we do not miss an opportunity which could improve the life chances of our young people or enrich them through a life experience, such as with the recent trip to Uganda. Indeed, within this issue you may read about the numerous opportunities, ranging from charitable works to performance, both on the stage and in the sporting arena. All of our Academy community has access to the many activities that take place which are either provided by the Academy or the multitude of agencies and partners that we are pleased to have. Finally, may I wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a successful New Year.
