As we enter the Month of March I see warmer days ahead with hopes of our residents getting outdoors again to feel the warmth of the sun, feeling the fresh breeze as one sits outdoors or goes for short walks around the facility. Spring tends to bring more smiles and happy feelings.
I am happy to see the month of February fade away, as we have not had a very happy month. Residents and staff have been ill and recovered from Norovirus and/or Covid. For those of you that may not know what Norovirus is, it is a virus that attacks the GI system causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and cramps, low grade fever, chills and muscle aches. This virus generally affects people from November – April. An interesting fact is Noroviruses can be very hard to kill as it can withstand hot and cold water along with some disinfectants. Our best defense is washing hands frequently with soap for up to 20 seconds or longer, try not to be close to any affected person, washing your fruits and vegetables, wearing gloves and using bleach based disinfectants to clean surfaces. Symptoms usually arise within 12-48 hours after contact and can last 1-3 days. There is no vaccine or viral or antibiotic treatment. Treatment is rest, fluids (water, electrolyte drinks or Pedialyte, broths, nondecaf tea, 7-up) plain toast, saltine crackers, plain white ice, jello.
I would like to give a shout out to all the staff at the Marian Home for again getting us through another bout of covid and the Norovirus outbreak.
Nursing staff as front-line caretakers assisting those that were ill and needed extra TLC and time.
Dietary for the many requests or changes at the last minute for food and fluids, helping deliver food to rooms and helping clean up after meals.
Housekeeping for helping keep rooms clean, sanitized and helping nursing staff when able.
Laundry for the never ending bedding, need for clean washcloths, towels and clothes. All the staff that helped keep the supply of PPE available.
I am proud to say we all take part in care and support of the Residents. True meaning of Teamwork!
Wishing all of you a happy, healthy March and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Is your loved one on Amerigroup Medicaid? If so, Amerigroup just began rebranding as “Wellpoint” starting in January of 2024. They will be sending out new ID cards to all members in the mail in early 2024. Please be on the lookout for this new ID card from Wellpoint (formerly Amerigroup) and bring in a copy of it or have Danni or another staff member make a copy of it, so we can have this on file. The Amerigroup card will work until the new card arrives. Nothing else is changing with the name change. Access to primary care providers, specialists, and other healthcare facilities will remain the same for the members. As always, let me know if you have any questions. bbeebe@marianhome.com 515-574-5901, or stop in and chat. Thanks!
