Tis the season for cold weather and increased illnesses, feeling run down and tired. What actually works to help us feel better. Question is, is there any truth to taking Vitamin C and Zinc? Here is a guide to what may work and what to avoid.

1) Stay Hydrated. Whether it’s tea, warm water with lemon or broth, drinking warm liquids can be soothing, prevent dehydration and ease congestion. Avoid salty foods, alcohol, coffee and sugary drinks, which can be dehydrating. Ice chips are another simple way to stay hydrated and calm a scratchy throat.

2) Gargle with salt water. A saltwater gargle with about 1 tsp of salt per cup of warm water can help reduce pain and swelling of the throat.

3) Humidify the air. Cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Dry nostrils are more prone to viruses and if you’re already sick, dry air can worsen a sore throat. Try using a humidifier. If you do not have a humidifier leave a shallow bowl of water out, particularly near a heat source. As the water evaporates, it’ll slowly humidify the room.

4) Over-the-counter meds. Over-the-counter decongestants, antihistamines and pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or Tylenol, can reduce symptoms. These meds will not “cure” a cold. Children younger than 6 should not use over-the-counter meds without talking with your provider first.

5) Rest. This is the time to recharge your body’s immune system. Rest and sleep are the best ways to do this. Make sure you’re sleeping between 8 and 10 hours at night. This is also a great chance to take a break from strenuous exercise for 2-3 days. A short walk in fresh air sometimes feels good too.
