Schools get into gear with a formidable lineup of both academics, sports and the arts—from The Out-Of-Door Camps from volleyball to engineering to the NewGate School Camp Endeavor featuring hiking, paddleboarding, cooking and horseback riding in the great outdoors. Non-profit organizations and attractions typically aimed at afterschool and weekend programs during the school year now set their sights on week-long extended camps—from Sarasota Jungle Gardens Zoo Camp (if your little one loves animals, this should be at the top of your list) to Ringling College of Art and Design’s Summer Classes in drawing, painting, comic art, video production, creative writing, character design and more (our 9-year old can’t wait until he’s old enough to enroll.) Sarasota Youth Opera Camp Presenting a three-week, hands-on workshop held at the Sarasota Opera House every June that immerses young people in all aspects of opera. Though opera may sound scary or weird, this camp shows young artists that opera can be fun on and off the stage. Participants experience the magic onstage and behind the scenes as they study many facets of opera—from music and acting to opera appreciation and technical production under the direction of Sarasota Opera’s professional staff. 2020 Summer Camps ARTS CAMP - VISUAL ARTS ART CENTER SARASOTA CREATIVE KIDS SUMMER CAMP Ages 6-10 Campers will be led by their teachers in fun and challenging art projects using various mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture and collage. They will learn and practice basic art skills such as color mixing, painting with artist paint brushes and drawing with pencil, marker and pastel. Creative Kids Camp is for younger campers of all skill levels and accomplishments. Our teachers are great at creatively adapting projects and working with a variety of skill levels and dexterity. EMERGING ARTISTS CAMP Ages 11-15 Emerging Artists Camp is a program for older campers to experiment with more complex art subjects and materials and create projects of their own design under the guidance of our skilled art teachers. FASHION BOOT CAMP Ages 9-16 For designers ages 9–16 who want to create fashion from conventional and unconventional materials. Students will complete a basic sewing project and work on a fashion design of their own creation aided by our skilled teachers. They will explore, design and create with the materials they bring and those that we have on hand. The class will learn about fashion design, construction, creative thinking and problem-solving. Designers will need to bring an idea for an unconventional material outfit, some requested materials and a basic sewing kit. Dates: June 1–August 7 Cost: $140 for members and $170 for non-members per session PICTURE THIS! FILMMAKERS SUMMER CAMP Middle and High School Students The program will consist of an exciting six-week course where students will have an opportunity to explore all aspects of filmmaking, from beginning to the actual creation of their own film. At the conclusion, all participants and parents are invited to a Red Carpet Premiere Reception with a private viewing. Last year’s participants also shared in the excitement of viewing their film as part of the annual Cine-World Film Festival held in November. MOSAIC SMASH CLUB Ages 6-12 From destruction comes new life. Smash and rebuild colorfully creative mosaic pieces from multiple media types when exploring the wonderful world of mosaic art.
