FOREWORD Welcome to the second edition of YouthLink Scotland’s ‘Youth Work Training Directory’ (2012-13). This directory has been compiled by us in collaboration with our member organisations and partners who wish to share their training opportunities. The aim is to increase access, avoid duplication within the sector and promote quality youth work training to youth workers and related professions working with young people. The enclosed directory provides details of training opportunities across Scotland that are available to a range of staff and volunteers working with young people for the period of September 2012-March 2013. Details can also be accessed online through our events and training calendar. This year we have added a pdf and Issuu (online magazine) version of the Training Directory which will be updated with changes during the year: http://alturl.com/p8x5h. We have also responded to the demand for more information on accredited courses. The Training Directory has a wide reach across the youth work sector and beyond through a range of distribution networks, attracting the interest of employers, careers advisors, current youth workers and prospective students. This year we have increased the number and range of providers and anticipate an increase in the level of uptake of training opportunities through its dissemination. We continue to welcome feedback on all elements of this publication and comments should be fed directly to Tim Frew: Workforce Development Manager: tfrew@youthlinkscotland.org We welcome the continued support of the CLD Standards Council for Scotland as the prime sponsor of the publication and to new partners who have taken space in the Directory to promote their services. Best wishes Jim Sweeney Chief Executive, YouthLink Scotland

INTRODUCTION YouthLink Scotland YouthLink Scotland is the national agency for youth work. It is a membership organisation and is in the unique position of representing the interests and aspirations of the whole of the sector both voluntary and statutory. YouthLink Scotland champions the role and value of the youth work sector, challenging government at national and local levels to invest in the development of the sector. Part of YouthLink Scotland’s mission is to be a key partner with government in workforce development and one of YouthLink Scotland’s key outcomes is to develop: “A clear strategic approach to workforce development, increasing the quality and quantity of training opportunities for youth work staff and volunteers.”

YouthLink Scotland’s Members Training Provision YouthLink Scotland’s members provide a significant range, depth and diversity of training and CPD opportunities for those working with young people in many different locations throughout Scotland. The Training Directory highlights just some of these opportunities suitable for volunteers and paid staff in youth work and related professions working with young people. The primary focus of this publication is the bite-sized one to two day training provision by our members that is open to other organisations. They offer significant value for money, combined with the quality that you expect from experienced trainers.

Statement on the nature and purpose of youth work & CLD Competences The Statement on the nature and purpose of youth work developed in 2005 and updated in 2009, sets the context for youth work including its characteristics and purpose. The Statement set alongside the CLD competences, the CLD Code of Ethics and the Youth Work Commentary, give an insight into the nature of youth work training provision and CPD opportunities offered throughout the Training Directory.

The Scottish Government established Education Scotland in 2011as a key national body supporting quality and improvement in Scottish education, including Community Learning and Development (CLD). Youth Work is one of the key contexts that CLD is delivered in. As part of its role in quality improvement in CLD, Education Scotland is working with the Standards Council and other partners to build a sustainable learning culture in CLD. Some key developments are outlined below. For more information on Education Scotland’s role in CLD, contact: Mhairi Gilfillan. E: Mhairi.Gilfillan@educationscotland.gov.uk Cath Hamilton. E: Cath.Hamilton@educationscotland.gov.uk or Colin Ross. E: Colin.Ross@educationscotland.gov.uk.

Building a sustainable learning culture for CLD – How can you get involved? Following the significant investment in upskilling, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) partnerships and networks have been growing all over Scotland and are demonstrating the benefits in planning and sustaining effective learning programmes. There has been a particular focus on ensuring a wide representation within these arrangements including the Third sector. Funding for CPD for the Community Learning and Development workforce across sectors has once again been made available in 2012–2013 by the Scottish Government to help maintain the momentum established by these partnerships and networks. The range of CPD opportunities which have been generated are wide reaching and have a particular focus on developing new and innovative approaches to learning across sectors and authorities. These include an emphasis on peer learning, coaching and action learning as well as more targeted training opportunities around specific themes. If you would like more information or are interested in being involved in these partnerships or networks then please contact: Mandy Toogood – Upskilling Development Officer, Education Scotland Mandy.Toogood@educationscotland.gov.uk for further details or advice.

National Training and Development Network The National Training and Development network has been established following the significant investment in upskilling the CLD workforce. This resulted in a wide range of continuing professional development (CPD) activity across Scotland being available for practitioners to engage in a process of developing knowledge, improving skills and enhancing their confidence. The Network will provide a platform for those who are responsible for developing CPD within the context of CLD in Scotland to be actively involved in developing a sustainable learning culture. This links directly to the CPD strategic vision above and will contribute to the CPD framework that is currently under development to support the CPD Strategy for the sector. The difference the network will make The network is focused on the difference that it can make for practitioners and the individuals, groups and communities they work with. The aims are to improve practice, build the confidence of practitioners and share learning. To do this the National Training and Development Network will: • Make sure that networks that we know about are sharing their experiences with each other... and with others • Make sure that individuals across Scotland who have a responsibility for the management or delivery of training, development and CPD opportunities across the CLD sector are connected with and are able to learn from each other • Bring together practitioners who are responsible for CPD within CLD partnerships, local authorities and National Agencies. • Support practitioners to engage in the CPD framework for CLD • Source through the network examples of practice, CPD developments, materials and other documentary evidence of developments and innovations in CPD, and contribute these to the CPD framework • Provide support to translate ideas and innovation into practice. • Encourage and support interdisciplinary CPD developments. For more information about the network contact: Mandy.Toogood@educationscotland.gov.uk Communities of practice – Connect This is an online platform for communities of practice in CLD, and the network uses it to share plans and learning from CPD activity. Connect is open to anyone who is interested in being involved in the network: http://www.cpconnect.org.uk/

BA (Hons) Youth Work and Community Learning and Development BA (Hons) Education and Learning (Youth Work and Community Learning and Development) BA (Hons) Social Pedagogy (Youth Work and Community Learning and Development)

These innovative 4 year distance learning programmes explore the processes and thinking involved in animating, facilitating and deepening learning and development both with young people and adults. They lead to a Canterbury Christ Church University award as well as full dual professional (JNC) qualification in youth work (validated by the National Youth Agency) and community learning and development (validated by the Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland). If you are interested in education and learning in their broadest senses, want a highly respected professional qualification, and are keen to mix rigorous academic study with reflective practice, one of these programmes may be for you. The ways of thinking and acting involved are highly transferable to a wide range of careers – but have special relevance for those committed to developing and extending the range and depth of learning experiences within young people and in local communities.

PG Dip/MA Youth Work and Community Learning and Development (Starting Autumn 2012) This exciting advanced programme of study responds to the demands of the field and our undergraduate alumni to produce an enhanced current and critical exploration of youth work and community learning and development practice. There are two programmes on offer. One is a non-qualifying route normally for those who are already professionally qualified as youth and community workers and wish to enhance their knowledge and practice base to postgraduate level. The other is a qualifying route which offers professional qualification for those who already have a first degree and wish to study at postgraduate rather than undergraduate level. The PG Dip/MA Youth Work and Community Learning and Development are multi-disciplinary programmes. Both programmes consist of a two stage qualification process, the first being the PG Dip (although there is an exit point at postgraduate certificate level), then the MA, and both consist of eight modules

Columba 1400’s purpose is simple; to help young people realise that they already have the inner greatness and confidence to transform their own lives and the lives of those around them. Our core belief is that huge leadership potential already exists within young people. Our model of elicitation helps to maximise an individual’s potential not only for their own futures but, equally importantly, so that they can contribute more effectively for the greater benefit of their home communities. Young people, their parents or carers, teachers, support workers and other key figures from across the UK come together at our centres on Skye and on the banks of Loch Lomond. Our residential programmes, followed by on-going support, are designed to give young people the strength and courage to find their own unique voice and purpose – and to use that voice to inspire families and communities on return.

Our Columban Values All our programmes are underpinned by our six core values: Awareness Focus Creativity Integrity Perseverance

Service

Our holistic approach along with our inspirational values led leadership programmes are at the heart of everything Columba 1400 does.

Our Programmes All of our award winning programmes are tailored to the specific requirements of our partner organisations and are typically a 6–9 month engagement. Our core programmes are: Young Peoples Leadership Academy These programmes aim to involve those who are hardest to reach – young people from ‘tough realities’ who may be living in chaotic circumstances. Many face the challenges of living in or leaving care, drug or alcohol dependency or homelessness. The programme aims to support young people to look beyond

32

these circumstances, seize the initiative and use their backgrounds as a launch pad to change their futures. Schools Leadership Academy Working with school students and teachers, Columba 1400’s programme team supports young people and their teacher’s come to a fuller appreciation of their values, qualities and strengths so they can effect changes in their own lives and extend their contribution to the life and ethos of the school and their wider communities. Staff Leadership Programme This programme brings together teaching staff and educational leaders on a shared leadership development experience. It allows participants the time and space to develop a growing awareness of self and the choices they have made and continue to make as leaders. It is a rare opportunity for participants to stop, reflect and take perspective on what their school and their leadership could yet become. Gemini Programme The Columba 1400 Gemini Programme connects young people who have previously participated in one of our programmes with leaders from corporates, industry, public and third sector organisations. It seeks to bring together individuals of different ages and from different backgrounds to build an experience which enables them to explore their leadership, identify and reflect on values, re-consider their potential and the impact they could yet have on others. It is a profound experience of personal growth and improved communication skills. The programme offers the chance to appreciate others often with contrasting life experiences, leading to enhanced social integration. Transitions Programme This programme works with younger children, often with their parents, at the critical juncture in their lives as they move from primary to secondary school and focusses on self-awareness, confidence and resilience as they continue their leadership development at this key stage. For further information on any of the above or for discussions on a bespoke programme for your organisation please contact: Mark Brown, Head of Programmes T: 0131 516 1400 | E: mark@columba1400.com

Introducing i-develop: learning for CLD As part of the Standards Council’s CPD Strategy – A Learning Culture for the Community Learning and Development Sector in Scotland – we bring you i-develop: learning for CLD, a web-based framework to support creative and innovative learning and development for CLD practitioners, based on the values, principles, skills and competences they need as communities, individuals and employers. i-develop integrates the theories and practices that help shape effective CPD for the CLD sector, such as peer sharing, communities of practice, learning journeys and reflection-in-action in order to shape a learning community of practitioners across CLD. i-develop resources are grouped into three sections: Vision and Values, Supporting Others and Developing the Self. Every section is populated with resources created, inspired by and developed in partnership with CLD practitioners. i-develop is underpinned by our commitment to nurturing a culture of learning in our sector and supports it in practice: it brings new resources, accessible to all practitioners across all contexts and regions, free to access and yours to tailor to your needs. From the users: Good to see i-develop up and running… we now have a collective responsibility to get involved and support each other’s CPD. Let's get messy with it! Used well and regularly, this space will be hugely beneficial to the CLD field. I am looking forward to finding innovative ways to encourage colleagues to log in, use and populate the site.
