The CLD Standards Council & YouthLink Scotland The Standards Council for Community Learning and Development for Scotland is the body responsible for the registration of CLD practitioners, the approval of training courses and the continuing professional development of the sector workforce. We are pleased to be partners with a wide range of CLD practitioners, employers, agencies and organisations across Scotland and we areincreasingly working with colleagues in the UK and Europe. Training, development and CPD (continuing professional development) is a core priority for us at this time. We are developing a new framework for practitioners which will be developed in partnership with the key players in workforce development, that includes YouthLink Scotland who are a leading player in the delivery of and co-ordination of training opportunities for the youth work field. This directory is a significant asset in this context and we anticipate its growth in the coming years with all of our contributions. There will be opportunities for you and your organisation in this director use to the max and enjoy!! The Standards Council has been pleased to develop a fresh set of competences for the community education and youth work field of practice â&#x20AC;&#x201C; available on our website for comprehensive download (http://alturl.com/ggs3i) as well as completed work in the context of values and ethics. Currently, with YouthLink Scotland we have developed a youth work commentary to accompany our CLD code of ethics, again available for download. Our work with national training approvals processes this year will ensure we have a core of training available at a series of levels for all practitioners across Scotland and beyond. The opportunities in this publication only add quality to this programme. We are grateful to YouthLink Scotland for giving us this opportunity to be part of a new development. A future aspiration is to explore the idea of quality marking to further recognise the excellent range and high quality of youth work training delivered by agencies and partners across Scotland. FOREWORD Welcome to the first edition of YouthLink Scotland’s ‘Youth Work Training Directory 2011/12’. This directory has been compiled by YouthLink Scotland in collaboration with our member organisations who have been in a position to share their training opportunities. The aim is to increase access, avoiding duplication of effort and financial outlay, and promote quality youth work training to related professions working with young people. The enclosed directory provides details of training opportunities across Scotland that are available to a range of staff and volunteers working with young people for the period of September 2011-March 2012, details of which can also be accessed in our online training directory at www.youthlinkscotland.org.uk We would welcome feedback on all elements of this publication as we work with our members to develop this resource. Over the next few years we hope to increase both, the level of members’ contribution to the directory, and the level of uptake of training opportunities through its dissemination. INTRODUCTION YouthLink Scotland YouthLink Scotland is the national agency for youth work. It is a membership organisation and is in the unique position of representing the interests and aspirations of the whole of the sector both voluntary and statutory. YouthLink Scotland champions the role and value of the youth work sector, challenging government at national and local levels to invest in the development of the sector. Part of YouthLink Scotland’s mission is to be a key partner with government in workforce development and one of YouthLink Scotland’s key outcomes is to develop: “A clear strategic approach to workforce development, increasing the quality and quantity of training opportunities for youth work staff and volunteers.” YouthLink Scotland’s Members Training Provision YouthLink Scotland’s members provide a significant range, depth and diversity of training and CPD opportunities for those working with young people in many different locations throughout Scotland. The Training Directory highlights just some of these opportunities suitable for volunteers and paid staff in youth work and other related professions working with young people. The focus is on bite-sized one to two day training provision by our members that is open to other organisations. They offer significant value for money, combined with the quality that you expect from experienced trainers. Bespoke Training The Training Directory also promotes bespoke training opportunities, provided by our members and partner organisations advertising their services. Accredited Youth Work Training The Training Directory is not designed as a comprehensive guide to accredited youth work training, but does signpost some introductory level qualifications provided by members. Using the Youth Work Training Directory Browse Browse training by Theme: The training directory is divided into colour coded themed sections to help point you in the right direction when you are looking for training opportunities around a particular topic. The entire course list is listed by theme. Browse training by Date: The training opportunities are also listed in a directory format to allow you to select the most up to date training opportunities and plan training around your availability. The page number is given on the right hand side which will direct you to the full course description. Book You will find the contact details relating to each training opportunity at the bottom of each course description page. Training providers have supplied these contact details to enable you to make any enquiries for further information and to book spaces on each course. ArtWorks : Youth Worker’s Guide to the Arts and Training The ArtWorks guide has been developed by YouthLink Scotland, in partnership with Creative Scotland, to embed effective and quality arts practice within the principles, values and purpose of youth work. Artworks offers advice and information on visual arts, creative writing, film, dance and drama and performance skills. To accompany this resource, YouthLink Scotland are delivering a series of half-day training events to enable youth workers to take a closer look at effective arts development for young people, try out some of the activities and exercises included in the pack, and share information on local arts experience and resources. YouthLink Scotland will facilitate this introductory training session for member organisations. The cost will be £350 +VAT per training event for a group of up to 12 participants. Each participant will receive a free copy of the training pack. The Scottish Youth Parliament has over ten years of experience when working with young people and developing bespoke youth engagement initiatives. We have created a range of training programmes for young people and would be delighted to assist external agencies currently engaging/or wishing to engage with young people in Scotland. The programmes are all tailored to your specific organisations requirements. A key element of the SYP Training programme is that they can be led by young people, who have been trained in facilitation. Examples of previous training include: Project Planning Training The SYP have delivered project planning and delivery training to various organisations including the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration and Fife Council. This training can also be adapted to planning and delivery of campaigns at both a local and national level. The training programmes were developed with each organisations requirements in mind. Consultation and Focus Groups The SYP have a network of members from across Scotland, both supported through local authorities and voluntary organisations. The Rural Communities Division of the Scottish Government approached the SYP to deliver a focus group to gain the opinions of young people from rural Scotland on the new ‘Speak Up for Rural Scotland’ document that had been created. The outline of the session was to gain young people’s views on the document, to ensure that it took into consideration the views of young and old. SOEC works with a wide range of groups providing outdoor learning experiences at its four outdoor Centres in Scotland (Belmont Centre, Meigle, Broomlee Centre, West Linton, Dounans Centre, Aberfoyle and Loaningdale Centre, Biggar). By supporting the development of community groups, volunteers and practitioners in the community environmental sector we hope to increase capacity to enable community projects to be planned and delivered in a safe and sustainable way. The courses detailed in this directory are part of the environmental and Community Leaders Training programme (ECLTP), merging BTCV, FEVA and other environmental sector organisations to provide and promote a year long schedule of quality training. These courses can help you increase your skills and confidence in delivering and taking part in environmental programmes and include supporting programmes such as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sustainable Communities Mentorship Programmeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Sustainable Communities Mentorship Programme This innovative programme offers training and support to individuals in Scotland who want to inspire their own communities to take action to become more sustainable. The programme is highly regarded and has trained over 100 Sustainable Community Mentors to date. A two-day initial training workshop provides participants with the skills and knowledge to raise awareness about sustainability in their own communities. Participants work on developing their own unique skills, producing Action Plans for their communities and learning tools to take forward practical Community Projects to improve the local environment and take action for a more sustainable planet. A Duke of Edinburgh's Award is so much more than a 'pat on the back' for completing a programme of activities. It is recognition of a young person’s successful journey of self-discovery and development, renowned by employers and universities alike for the qualities young people have who've achieved a DofE Award. There are three progressive levels of DofE programmes which, when successfully completed, lead to Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The DofE is committed to ensuring high quality training is in place for DofE leaders and volunteers that run our programmes. It is the competence and confidence of our leaders that provides inspirational, top quality experiences for the thousands of young people who aim to achieve an Award. We have therefore created a Modular Training Framework which presents a wide range of flexible, relevant and high quality training opportunities. This includes a free online e-induction – the ideal training resource for any new volunteers or to upskill existing volunteers. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award training courses are organised locally to meet the needs of new and existing volunteers. The YMCA George Williams College is unique. It is the only specialist college in the UK in its field and the only institution offering a UK-wide qualification. It is widely renowned throughout the UK, and has been consistently commended by the National Youth Agency (NYA) in its annual review of programmes. The College works in association with Canterbury Christ Church University who award our undergraduate programmes. Our programmes meet all NYA and The Standards Council for Community Learning and Development in Scotland requirements for professional qualification. The College will be running the following courses throughout the academic year 2011â&#x20AC;&#x201C;2012 and beyond. Please get in touch for details. 1. PDA in youth Work The programme is suitable for people working with children and young people in informal settings wishing to develop their existing knowledge and understanding. The course is accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and is worth 24 credit points at SCQF level 6. The flexible course contains three modules with each module containing five taught sessions lasting approximately three hours per session (This can be configured to meet the needs of the host organisation). Uniquely, the course can be run in-house or be delivered by the YMCA George Williams College at your organisation. Both options require a minimum of six participants to be registered. The PDA is delivered over three modules: Youth Work: Understanding and Exploring Youth Work/Engaging with Young People/Youth Work: Delivering Youth Work. 2. Diploma in Informal Education and CLD The Diploma programmes are for people involved in informal education, youth work, mentoring and community learning, they aim to enable learners to explore their values and beliefs, engage more deeply with others to assist them in learning, identify and use resources within the community, and plan and evaluate their work. The course is accredited in Scotland by the CLD Standards Council SCQF level 6/7 The programme is offered part-time by distance learning. It involves students working through relevant study material in conjunction with 240 hours of face-to-face work. All programmes are assessed through written work and by

reports from line managers and supervisors.The duration of the programme is normally 9-12 months. Start and finish times are negotiated and agreed with the College. To join the programme you will need to demonstrate:

Certificate in Supervision studies – Starting October 2011 The Certificate in Supervision Studies offers an opportunity to those who are currently supervising students, staff, volunteers, or other practitioners regularly to deepen their understanding and develop their capacities as supervisors. It is a part time programme by distance learning. The Certificate in Supervision Studies is validated by Canterbury Christ Church University and is a 20 credit Higher Education course equivlant to an SVQ level 3 Qualification. In addition, it is endorsed by The Standards Council for Community Learning and Development in Scotland (CeVe) to confer professional qualification for fieldwork practice supervisors in Scotland.
