PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Ursuline Community,

Beginning last year, my first year as Academy president, we faced a year marked by great success and profound challenges for Ursuline Academy and our community, but we faced them together. We all know the challenges posed by Hurricane Ida striking our area in August, causing widespread damage and pain. Beginning school again three weeks later was an additional challenge for everyone, especially our displaced families. However, I was grateful for the opportunity to see the Ursuline community spirit in action. While members of our community were dealing with loss, our greater Ursuline community came together to provide support in numerous ways and, in the true Ursuline spirit of Serviam, helped share the burdens some were experiencing. While we still faced COVID challenges last year, our students and staff persevered to bring back old traditions and create some new ones. In the spring, when we could unmask and see everyone’s beautiful smiles every day, we felt such shared joy in our Ursuline family.

The successes of the school year were many. In high school, they came in the form of sports championships, academic awards, scholarships, and more. Everyday moments and events in elementary grades and special events like the St. Joseph Altar, Living Rosary, and 7th Grade promotion brought joy to our days. Opening the Lily House in August and blessing the sacred space gifted to us by the Sisters, who gave their former home to house the youngest of our community, brought much additional joy and gratitude.

This school year saw a total return to our usual way of being and interacting as a community, which brings many blessings to us all. We celebrated Rally, welcomed alumnae to Homecoming and La Fête, and celebrated our grandparents. I feel honored to be part of these young ladies’ (and some young early childhood boys'!) journeys in academics, faith, and growth as compassionate leaders.

It has been a true privilege to be at Ursuline and lead through the joys and the challenges. We, as a staff, humbly accept our lay leadership roles as we endeavor to ensure the charism of our dear Ursuline Sisters remains foundational to our Academy. As a Catholic school educator and leader, I continue to feel humbly blessed and called to lead Ursuline through the guiding charism of Serviam – I will serve.

As you read through Ursu.Lines, I hope you will share our pride in the joyful moments of this past year. We also continue to look to our future as we work to ensure our academic foundations are both rigorous and innovative, foster Catholic faith formation, and ensure that our diversity, inclusion, and belonging work progresses. All community members should feel the belonging that our foundress St. Angela sought to form in her company. St. Angela wrote in her last counsel to her company that they should “… live in harmony, united together, all of one heart and one will.” The words of her final counsel are our guiding theme for this school year.

Thank you all for your work to ensure Ursuline’s future as we continue the tradition of 296 years of Ursuline education in New Orleans!

DEDICATION AND BLESSING OF

On Wednesday, December 15, 2021 the Academy held a dedication for Lily House, a new space that provides a small and welcoming environment for boys and girls from 6 weeks through age 1. A prayer service and blessing by Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond, Archbishop of New Orleans, preceded the dedication. Honored guests included Dr. RaeNell Houston, Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of New Orleans; Ursuline Sisters; Ursuline Academy Board of Trustees members Dr. Kristin Van Hook Moore ’92, Jessica Kennedy Becker ’89, David

Huete, and Justin Fleetwood. Named in honor of Ursuline foundress St. Angela Merici, the Lily House is located in the former Nashville Convent and offers an intimate, safe space for our youngest students to develop meaningful relationships with their peers and teachers during their most formative years. The beautiful renovation has been made possible through the generosity of Wayne and Jackie Leonard in hopes of nurturing children with love, strength, and courage.

Congratulations to the 2022 Division II

LHSAA Golf State Champions, Sweden Ledet '22 and Ariana Blagrove '23. Our fierce competitors turned in two of the top individual scores for the Division II victory. The Lions turned in a final round 11-over par score of 155 thanks to the 76 of Sweden Ledet and the 79 of Ariana Blagrove on the Wetlands Golf Club Course (5,760-yard, par-72) in Lafayette. This created a 14-stroke margin in the final round and a 317 total, which was 27 strokes ahead of runnerup Ouachita Christian. We are so proud of these Lions! Thank you, Coach Kyle, for leading Ari and Sweden through this well-deserved victory.

St. Joseph's Altar

Ursuline Academy was proud and excited to prepare its very own St. Joseph’s Altar on campus this year.

The St. Joseph’s Altar is a tradition that began in Sicily and was brought to New Orleans by immigrants in the 1800s.

The first altar was prepared as a way for Sicilians to show their gratitude to St. Joseph, who they prayed to for intercession from a famine caused by a devastating drought. The altar was prepared with a special assortment of foods they had harvested. After paying honor to St. Joseph, the food was distributed to the less fortunate. As is tradition, Ursuline’s St. Joseph’s

Day Altar was divided into three sections to represent the Holy Trinity, with a statue of Joseph at its head. It included flowers, breads, fruit, cakes, cookies, and fava beans, or lucky beans. The fava beans are a significant part of the altar because they were the only crop that survived the drought, helping to sustain the Sicilians during the famine.

We would like to thank our parents and staff who helped make our inaugural St. Joseph's Altar a beautiful success. We would also like to recognize Nor Joe Importing Co. for donating delicious Italian treats for the altar.

ASPIRATIONAL ART GRACE HOUSE RECOVERY CARDS

Grace House’s Residential SubstanceUse Disorder Treatment Program for women has been in a wonderful partnership with Ursuline’s Art 2 class for the past 3 years. The treatment program ensures the use of the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 Step Program in the recovery process. This year’s “Aspirational Art” project was “Recovery Cards.” The students chose a step or slogan of the program and created a painting as a visual representation of what it means to them. They used hand lettering to describe the step in a separate piece. Once completed, both pieces were printed to create a single card. There were a total of 60 cards per deck. There were a total of 80 decks

professionally printed with a cover card which says: “Aspirational Art Recovery Cards created by the artists of Ursuline Academy High School for the women of Grace House in celebration of their courage and strength.” These cards will be used in therapy and given to the women to take with them upon completion of the program. The CEO of Grace House, Else Pederson, MBA, LAC, said the cards were “well received and appreciated - a great tool for recovery.”

The Aspirational Art that we have created has been made possible by a service learning grant from the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation. The grant has paid for professional grade art materials and the printing of the cards. Over the past 3 years, this grant has

funded murals as well as outdoor and indoor large scale art pieces that the students have created. The entire Grace House campus is filled with Ursuline's recovery artwork.

There are many stages involved in creating our Aspirational Art. Aside from the technical knowledge needed to create the paintings, the students learn about addiction, recovery, and the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Grace House alumnae spend time with the students and tell their story of addiction and recovery. The students said this was one of the most significant aspects of the project. Some girls were invited to be

guests of Else Pederson at the annual Grace House fundraiser, Women of Substance, at the Audubon Tea Room. The students were publicly recognized and enjoyed the luncheon and guest speakers.

The final stage of the project is selfreflection. The students spend time answering questions about their process, knowledge gained, and emotions felt. Upon reading these reflections, it is clear that our creative Ursuline girls live with compassion and articulate ideas with courage.

INSIDE the MUSEUM SPANISH NEW ORLEANS

FIVE PIECES OF 1772 ECCLESIASTICAL VESTMENTS

Created by Spanish Ursulines in 1772, during the Spanish Colonial period, these vestments were embroidered in pure silver, gold, and silk and were used for almost 200 years.

STATUE OF THE SCOURGED CHRIST

This statue of our Lord, referred to as the Christ of Humility and Patience, is a prime example of Spanish craftsmanship from the Spanish Colonial period. It is a gift given to the Sisters by an early Spanish governor (post 1763-1800) of Louisiana.

URSULINE ACADEMY | 14 | THE URSU.LINES | 2021-2022

The Ursuline Convent Museum, located on the Academy’s State Street campus, houses many unique items - some of which have become popular resources for other museums around the country. In the 1750s when the French lost Louisiana Territory to the Treaty of Paris, Spanish governance took over. Through this new governance came an influx of Spanish Ursulines who brought with them a love for visual arts, poetry, literature, and music. Some of their work, found inside the campus museum, is on display in the Historic New Orleans Collection’s “Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean” through February 2023.

18TH CENTURY CLOCK

This clock was given to the Sisters by Bishop Penalver y Cardenas when he left for Cuba. He left with the other Spanish clergy and religious, fearing French retribution following a secret treaty Spain made with Napoleon to return the Louisiana Territory to France following the French and Indian War. It was their mutually agreed upon goal for the powerful French Republic to keep the Mississippi River out of the hands of the British and the Americans.

THE WOOD-CARVED PROTOTYPE OF THE SIGN FOR THE U.S. DOLLAR BILL

Belonging to Oliver Pollock, this prototype was carved by Fr. Cyrillo de Barcelona in 1779. Following his death, Oliver Pollock gave it to the Ursulines for preservation.

Here in New Orleans, festivals play essential roles in celebrating our unique culture. After a year of virtual concerts and drive-by events, we excitedly welcomed the community back to campus to connect and celebrate. Ursuline’s Fall Festival on State Street featured an outdoor stage with live performances by The Hundreds Brass Band, The Original Pinettes, and Charmaine Neville. A book fair, food trucks, bounce houses, and arts and crafts made Fall Fest on State fun for the whole family.

The 2022 spring musical, Seussical JR. began with a young boy named JoJo, who conjures up the Cat in the Hat with his powerful imagination and is whisked to the Jungle of Nool for a fantastical adventure.  There, JoJo learns of the plight of the tiny citizens of Whoville, who live on a planet the size of a speck of dust.  Their sole protector is Horton the Elephant, who is the only one with large and sensitive enough ears to hear them bipping and beeping and playing their oompahs.  The small world is threatened by Sour Kangaroo and the Wickersham Brothers, who in disbelief that a world could be so small, try to steal the dust-speck so they can cast it into a vat of Beezle-Nut oil.  During all of this drama, Horton has not noticed that he has an admirer, Gertrude McFuzz. She blames his indifference on her one-feather short tail and endeavors to find a way to change her looks.  Meanwhile, Horton’s friend, Mayzie La Bird, is bored of perching on her nest, and convinces the watchful elephant to sit on her egg so she can take a vacation.  The Cat follows all of these storylines and finally casts the boy into his own as the irresponsible son of Mr. and Mrs. Mayor of Whoville, JoJo, who ultimately saves his whole tiny world with one big, imaginative “think.”

1st Grade Entrepreneurs

Ursuline first grade entrepreneurs presented their business, Bath Bomb Beauties. The girls produced and sold their bath bombs for $3.00 each. Their marketing campaign was robust, complete with a choreographed commercial.

2nd Grade MARKETPLACE

Our 2nd graders worked across many classes to become entrepreneurs. This was no easy task as students learned from various teachers on how to create and market a brand.

Ursuline teachers began the process by encouraging their students to create their own individual product. Each student would need to personally design and construct the product herself.

In Music, 2nd grade took their creativity to the next level by writing a jazzy jingle to advertise the marketplace. They worked in groups to brainstorm lyrics and melodies, voted on ideas, and recorded themselves singing the final jingle. Using Soundtrap, a digital music software program, they selected instruments and sound effects to perfect the song. Students then created their own choreography and produced the commercial in technology class.

Students in 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades were able to purchase 2nd grader products. In keeping the Ursuline motto of Serviam alive, the 2nd graders chose to donate their profits to a local charity. Their teamwork and creativity truly shined in all aspects of the project!

Celebrating Lunar New Year

Our 2nd grade Ursuline girls participated in a Lunar New Year crosscurricular project with Social Studies, Art, and Music. In Art, the girls worked on several different projects to create a vibrant display that served as a backdrop for their music performance. First, the girls created ceramic Chinese Zodiac animals. " Year of the Dog" was a particularly popular subject with the girls. 2022 marks the " Year of the Tiger" in the Lunar Calendar.

The girls learned important symbols for the Lunar New Year Holidayone being the Hoa Mai flower in Vietnam, which blossoms during Tet. The Hoa Mai blossoms are a symbol of spring, happiness, and good luck. The girls folded yellow paper to create the Hoa Mai blossoms using the

URSULINE ACADEMY | 24 | THE URSU.LINES | 2021-2022

art of origami. Hung from the Hoa Mai branches are little red envelopes. In countries that celebrate Lunar New Year, it is customary for children to receive red envelopes containing money from their elders. Finally, the girls studied Ming Pottery designs that originated in China. They recreated similar motifs found on the porcelain pottery using blue paint.

“What a joy to serve my Alma Mater! It is a gift and awesome responsibility. In the fall, we welcomed our 300th graduating class of Ursuline Academy New Orleans. Our world needs confident, compassionate, and innovative leaders. Those are the qualities of our foundress, St. Angela Merici, and our mission and core values provide our students with the tools they need to make 'herstory.' Ultimately, our work aims to be certain that every Ursuline girl knows the truth that she is loved by God and has gifts that only she can share with our world. The administration supports a remarkably talented and loyal faculty and staff who help our students discover those gifts and who celebrate each person on campus as a unique individual. It is an extraordinary experience to be part of the first girls’ Catholic school in the United States and know that we are a part of an international network of over 100 Ursuline schools following the path of the courageous St. Angela Merici.”

URSULINE ACADEMY | 27 | THE URSU.LINES | 2021-2022

This 2022-2023 school year, we are beyond excited to welcome our 8th grade class, who will be making HERstory as the Academy’s 300th graduating class! As the first all-girls’ Catholic school in the United States, this is a milestone that is unsurpassed in our country! The Ursuline Sisters were true trailblazers of their time and we are proud that our students continue their legacy today. We celebrate our Class of 2027 and can’t wait to see what trails they will blaze.

MYA FALGOUT '22 WAS SELECTED AS THE 2022 COR UNUM AWARD RECIPIENT BY THE URSULINE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION.

The award is given to one senior each year. Candidates are judged solely on their love for Ursuline Academy and their honest expression of what the Academy means to them.

What does it mean to you to be in the 295th graduating class of Ursuline Academy of New Orleans?

At only 13 years old, my mother handed me a small letter which I received weeks later than the ones I was seeing my friends receive at the end of 7th grade. After reading the letter, I was distraught by the cold words on the page and felt hopeless for the future that was planned out. Tossing and turning in my bed that night, re-reading the letter over and over, I thought no school would ever be the perfect fit for me. This all changed when I got accepted into Ursuline Academy of New Orleans, and my life hasn’t been the same since. Ursuline Academy saw something in me that I myself had never seen. They saw the potential of a young adolescent who was searching for the perfect family.

Being in the 295th graduating class of Ursuline Academy, I know that the opportunities I have for the future are endless. There are so many aspects to being an Ursuline girl that have forever changed my path in life. An Ursuline girl is easy to spot when you know what to look for; courtesy, loyalty, and courage are all the qualities that an Ursuline girl portrays. They glow from a distance, and you can feel their warm presence anywhere they go. In my graduating class, my sisters beside me glow in many different ways, all portraying these three qualities. The 295th class is not just any class. Sure, maybe I’m biased just because I am a member of this class myself, but I truly feel that my class exudes what it means to be a true Ursuline girl due to our diversity. We lift each other up and empower each other to strive for greatness.

In what ways do you feel your Ursuline education has prepared you for the world in which we live?

One thing I find to be outstanding about Ursuline Academy is how excellent their education department is run. The academics taught at Ursuline Academy are no ordinary textbook learnings. First off, the teachers at Ursuline Academy do a phenomenal job at helping the girls excel in their classes. If an assignment is not understood, every single teacher will go the extra mile to make sure that each and every student understands the material. Ursuline offers help before and after school and even tutoring by the National Honor Society, which I have been gratefully accepted into. One of my favorite things about the education I have received at Ursuline is that it is hands-on. In every assignment I do, I get to incorporate creativity into it. Hands-on learning includes assignments like physical projects, having access to the Smart Lab, and real conversations all while still including the standard formative assessments. All of these aspects have prepared me for the real world that I will experience after May 21st.

Name the most significant value you learned from Ursuline Academy.

The most significant value I have learned from Ursuline Academy is self-improvement while learning the importance of bettering my education and opportunities for myself. I have come a long way since 8th grade and have been more determined every year to better myself with the help of Ursuline Academy. Having the ability to use all my opportunities to their fullest has allowed me to grow and strive as the woman I am today. My classmates empowered me to participate in class and go the extra mile in school activities. I have had the opportunity to take on many leadership roles here at the Academy such as being the Key Club President and the Tennis Captain. Both of these roles at Ursuline have brought out one of my best qualities, leadership. When I joined Key Club sophomore year, I was drawn to the basis of the club. Key Club is a club based on serving others and caring

for the environment, which is something I have grown passionate about due to St. Angela's Feast Day. I was determined to be a good club member because I was so passionate about what the club had to offer. My junior year I was asked by the moderator if I was interested in being the president. I was excited to finally lead something at the school I loved the most and went above and beyond to make my club the best it could be. I also decided to pick up tennis that year. Never picking up a racquet before, I was excited to go out of my comfort zone and try something new. I fell in love with the sport and was determined to get better and succeed in something I found true joy in. Two

of these actions I took to focus on bettering myself through my education are thanks to Ursuline Academy. Ursuline has given me endless opportunities and instilled in me many values to uphold and take with me for the rest of my life. At Ursuline, you are not looked at as just a number towards enrollment; you are a unique and success-driven woman. I am motivated to make myself better everyday and I know anyone that attends Ursuline Academy will feel the same way.

What one word describes Ursuline and why?

years later, my senior year, I was awarded the position of captain of the tennis team. I dedicated myself to bettering my sport for two years and now I stand here, committed to play tennis for a Division II school. My determination for improving who I am did not stop there. My love for education only grew stronger as the years went on. One class that changed my life was Mr. Ian Graham's U.S. History class my junior year. World History had always been my favorite subject, however, this class flipped a switch for me. In this class, I felt free to ask a ton of questions, trying to better my understanding of our history and the world around us. I became so invested in learning more; I studied the world map over and over, I did more research after I turned in assignments because of how curious I was, and I would even go to Mr. Graham so we could discuss topics we were learning in class. I sparked conversations with the intent of understanding other people's perspectives in class. I took action to relearn ideas I had neglected before. I dove into opportunities that would allow me to grow my leadership skills. All

The one word that shot to my mind right when I read this question is growth. This idea of growing and bettering oneself is a common theme seen throughout my essay. For this reason, I truly believe that growth is the one word I would use to describe Ursuline anytime anyone asks me this question. Oxford Languages describes growth as: “The process of developing or maturing physically, mentally, or spiritually.” I firmly believe that anyone who enrolls into Ursuline Academy will not just grow with age, but grow in numerous ways. Ursuline Academy prepares young women to grow their faith and guarantees everyone some type of spiritual formation, regardless of religion or beliefs. All around, Ursuline allows its students to develop themselves as a whole, through community, academics, and uniqueness. If I had not attended Ursuline Academy, I know that I would not be where I am today. I can confidently say I would not have been able to grow and reach my full potential as the woman that I was born to be. I watched my classmates grow as well and finally find their niche and discover their true passions. Every one of my classmates has grown beautifully and I wish I could tell each and every one of them that I notice change in all of them. I won the senior superlative of “Most Changed” this year. Most people would think that this superlative is back-handed, however, I hold this title with pride. I am proud to say that yes, I have changed over the course of my years at the Academy. The amount of change I have experienced as a young woman is phenomenal thanks to the lessons I have learned at Ursuline. Since 1727, Ursuline Academy has grown a little more everyday and continues to change the lives of girls like me who want to make a difference in the world as a trailblazer. Growth has always been important to me in this journey, but the way I define growth is more important to me thanks to Ursuline Academy.

As her mother once stated, “Suzanne Cromiller Thomas lives her life as a true Ursuline graduate.” Suzanne is the daughter of an alumna, Patricia Sutton Cromiller. Her four sisters and two aunts also graduated from Ursuline. Suzanne attended Ursuline from kindergarten through her senior year. She graduated in 1973 and went on to Dominican College where she graduated in 1977. After receiving an MBA from the College of William and Mary in 1980, she embarked upon an almost 40-year career in the commercial banking industry.

She met her future husband, Robert Thomas, the August before her senior year at Ursuline and he first met her parents on the steps of the auditorium after she received her senior ring that September. They have been married 45 years and have two children and two grandchildren.

Suzanne has tried to find time to be an active volunteer. She watched her own mother volunteer when she was growing up, so the example was set early in her life. Serviam has been a guiding principle for her. Her sister, Renee Cromiller Porter, class of 1980, states, “She is someone that the current students of Ursuline Academy should strive to emulate.” One of her earliest forms of service was after Hurricane Betsy when her mom and a number of other Ursuline ladies decided to raise money to replace the roof on the original convent in the French Quarter. Suzanne and her sister Cindy spent many summer days selling tickets for tours in the convent gatehouse on Chartres Street. More recently, she has been a member of the Academy Board of Trustees. During that time, she rewrote the school’s financial and investment policies, and served on both the Finance and Executive Committees. She was Chairman of the Ursuline Academy Foundation from 2018-2022. Her sister, Cynthia Cromiller Connolly, class of 1974, states, “She is always thinking of others and ways that she can help. She is there for you if you need her. I am blessed that I can call her sister.”

Suzanne is a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way and is a past board member of the Greater New Orleans United Way. Post-Katrina, she was a board member of Parkway Partners, an organization that planted over 10,000 trees in neighborhoods across the city after the storm destroyed a large portion of the tree canopy. Suzanne is also a past board member and board chair of the Academy of the Sacred Heart. She has been recognized for her service and professional accomplishments over the years. She is a three-time recipient of the CityBusiness Women of the Year award, was named a 2017 New Orleans CityBusiness “Money Maker”, and was selected in 2018 as a Young Leadership Council Role Model. The Academy of the Sacred Heart awarded her with the St. Philippine Duchesne Award in recognition of her service to the school.

Suzanne retired from Hancock Whitney Bank in 2020 as an Executive Vice President. Since then, she has focused on helping her daughter care for her newborn, as well as various volunteer activities. She is currently the President of the Poydras Home Board of Trustees and is a member of the New Orleans Museum of Art Board of Trustees. She is active in her Parish, St. Francis Xavier, and has served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.

Suzanne is a founding member of the Ursuline Academy Laurel Legacy Guild. When expressing her desire to leave a planned gift, she stated, “One of my earliest Ursuline memories is my kindergarten interview with one of the nuns. We took a walk in the courtyard on a beautiful day and chatted. My mom was told that I had no separation anxiety. Even at 5 years old, Ursuline felt like a nurturing and supportive place. When I reflect on what helped me achieve success, after acknowledging the gifts that God has given me, as well as the support of my parents and husband, I can’t help but think about Ursuline Academy and my years on State Street. It is only natural that I would now consider a legacy gift to the school so that its tradition of educating strong and independent women will continue long after I am gone.”

Most recently, she and her sister Renee also established an academic scholarship in memory of their mother, Patricia Sutton Cromiller, class of 1943.

Ursuline Academy of New Orleans is proud to call Suzanne Cromiller Thomas a Distinguished Alumna.

In Loving Memory of Our Ursuline Sisters

Sister Carla Dolce, OSU

Sister Carla Dolce, OSU (Sylvia C. Dolce) returned to God on March 21, 2022, at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was born to John and Nina Puglia Dolce on November 4, 1932 in New Orleans. Sr. Carla is survived by her beloved brother, Carl J. Dolce and his loving wife, Nancy Lockwood Dolce; her nephew, John Dolce; her niece, Carla Stravridas; and her grand-nieces and and grand-nephews.

With great joy she entered the Ursuline Sisters of the Central Province and was professed July 16, 1956. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in History from the College of New Rochelle and a Master's Degree in History from St. Louis University. Sr. Carla ministered for sixty years throughout the Ursuline Central Province including Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. She served as the local leader for the Ursuline communities of Dallas, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Springfield, Illinois. In Laredo, Texas, Sr. Carla was principal of St. Peter School and taught at Ursuline Academy of Laredo. She was president of Ursuline Academy in Dallas and later volunteered with the Jewish Community Center. She was president of Marquette High School in Alton, Illinois and president of Ursuline Academy in St Louis, Missouri. In New Orleans, Sr. Carla served as principal and eventually as president of Ursuline Academy. Sr. Carla was co-director of the New Orleans Training Center which trained community organizers and she worked with Catholic Charities welcoming and assisting Cuban families who fled Cuba.

She was director of the National Votive Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. During this time, she was instrumental in providing for the future of the Shrine by establishing it as a corporation with a lay Board of Trustees. Also, she raised significant funds for a complete renovation of the Shrine. Sr. Carla was passionate about social justice and worked with various organizations in this effort in Laredo, Houston, and Austin, Texas. In Tunica, Mississippi, employed by the Sacred Heart Southern Mission, she was a catalyst for the Tunica Organization of Women with whom she worked to improve housing, education, and justice for the poor.

Sister Donna is remembered as an especially kind and gracious woman. She loved art, music, gardening, and travel, and was fluent in French and Italian.

She is survived by a sister, Susan Hyndman, and brother-in-law, Philip Whitson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Patterson.

I AM POWER PERSONIFIED.

DONATE ONLINE UANOLA.ORG

It has been a great year for Ursuline Academy, one of progress and achievement. Our accomplishments are a reflection of your contributions of time and generosity. Our Academy faculty and administration extend our heartfelt thanks to you for helping us achieve so much during a year of transition and growth. Below are some of the highlights of the 2021 - 2022 school year:

• Dr. Karen Jakuback joined our family to lead the Academy as president.

• We opened Lily House, a new division serving our youngest students from 6-weeks through one-year-old.

• The generous endowment of the Lucille Ash Flick Scholarship.

• Our #GiveNOLA campaign supporting our mission through the Serviam Annual Fund, surpassed its fundraising goal of $60,000 by raising $70,437.38.

We are constantly amazed by the dedication of our students, our faculty, and most of all...YOU. Your gift ensures that Ursuline girls learn, our faculty inspire, and so much more. Our mission is to educate trailblazing women while nurturing the whole person through faith, confidence, and compassion. We can only continue our mission with our community's support, trust, and kindness.

As you plan your philanthropic giving, please consider making a tax-deductible charitable donation to Ursuline Academy. Your gift today will help inspire the next generation of confident, faithful leaders, trailblazers, and champions as they continue on their path to college and beyond.

After 2 long years, our Ursuline girls finally had the opportunity to take their anticipated trip to Europe for the Education First (EF) tour of Italy, France, and Spain. One of their tour stops included a visit to the Basilica of St. Francis, where they prayed St. Francis’ prayer for peace.

"How it started" vs "How it's going" featuring the Ledet sisters: Sweden '22, Berlin '22, and their older sister, Holland '12.

After learning all about our great state in class, our third grade Ursuline girls brought a Fais Do Do to State Street complete with live Cajun music and dancing, traditional art, and food.

Our Pre-K Ursuline girls celebrated their moms with the annual Pre-K Tea.

Members of our elementary student council, with the expertise of one of our awesome master gardener grandmothers, spruced up the campus herb garden honoring Ursuline Sister, Sr. Francis Xavier Hebert - the first female pharmacist.

time to creating a special project in Ms. Boudreaux's social studies class on the incredible trailblazers they admire.

The second annual Neon Night was organized by our Operation Donation Club, led by Elizabeth Teran (Skip of 2022) and Basketball Head Coach Kris Goff. Our basketball Lions wore their new custom Neon Night jerseys to raise awareness and money for organ donations. We are proud to report that we raised $1,435.32 for Legacy Donor Foundation - a local non-profit organization that teaches the New Orleans community about the importance and need of organ donation.
