A Word From the Headmaster

The Best is Yet to Come

Out of the tree of life, I just picked a plum. You came along and everything’s startin’ to hum. Still it’s a real good bet, the best is yet to come…

Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh wrote these lyrics for a guy named Frank Sinatra. Sinatra goes on from here to sing…”You ain’t seen nothing yet.” These lyrics strike me as pertinent to the ministry of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Our best is yet to come.

For those who have watched our advancements over the years, I’m certain you’ll agree that “our works” have been remarkable. Lives have been transformed and the entire community is rebounding as a result of our steadfast commitment and faithfulness to the mission of God’s ministry – St. Philip’s.

Fast forward from the days of Sinatra to 2008. This is the year Gospel artist Donald Lawrence produced a gospel version of “The Best is Yet to Come.”

Hold on my brother, don’t give up Hold on my sister, just look up There is a master plan in store for you If you just make it through…

God’s gonna really blow your mind. He’s gonna make it worth your time.

For all the trouble you’ve been through The best seems double just for you. The Best Is Yet To Come.

Like Sinatra, Donald Lawrence’s version goes on with the lyrics –“you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

For every supporter, parent, and staff servant member of the St. Philip’s ministry, it is appropriate to marvel at how God is blessing others through us. However, we must not underestimate the exceedingly and abundantly wonders HE has in store.

As you read this edition of THE 1600 MAGAZINE, join me in my realization of the wondrous works God can cause to unfold if we are faithful in staying the course. For many summers, I have been a witness of how He wants to use me, an unlikely soul in an unlikely neighborhood with Faithful servants, to defy odds here in the South Dallas Fair Park community. Through Faith, Education, Social Services and Neighborhood transformation, a mighty work is underway with its BEST yet to come! Won’t you join me in staying the course to ensure blessings for more decades? As the Good Book states, “Eyes have not seen, nor ears heard, neither have entered into the heart of man which God hath prepared.” The Best is Yet to come for St. Philip’s and you ain’t seen nothing yet!

AT A GLANCE: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Our school currently serves over 200 students, grades PreK2 – 6th (ages 2 – 12) who benefit from St. Philip’s rigorous, nurturing, and dynamic Christian based education.

Recent studies have shown given children are natural “manipulators” that learn through controlling the movement and interactions of their world, technology may enhance their brain development.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Meet Early Childhood Director – Mrs. Michella Young

Great things lie ahead for St. Philip’s School and Community Center and our PreK2 – Kindergarten students under the leadership of our new Early Childhood Director, Michella Young, and her exceptional team of creative, dynamic and professional educators. Mrs. Young joined St. Philip’s faculty in 2010 as a PreK4 teacher. She quickly became a lead teacher, exhibiting consistent excellence, innovation and a passion for Early Childhood students.

“I love where God has ordered my steps in the Early Childhood program,” says Mrs. Young, the mother of five children, two of whom are St. Philip’s students. “My motto is: All children can learn when given the opportunity to try.” It is this sincere expectation of excellence that permeates throughout the Crystal Charity Ball Early Childhood Wing at St. Philip’s, encouraging and challenging the minds of our youngest students about the world around them.

St. Philip’s Leverages Gradus Gift to Strengthen Early Childhood Program

Gradus, one of St. Philip’s newest partners, has made a generous four year commitment of $1 million to foster an expansion of St. Philip’s enrollment. Through their support, St. Philip’s was able to hire an Early Childhood Director, additional teaching assistants, expand curriculum, and offer an increase in tuition assistance to more families. Additionally, St. Philip’s was able to leverage Gradus’ immense support specifically within our Early Childhood Program where we see a burgeoning enrollment, by securing support for teachers and other Early Childhood needs from Carl B. and Florence E. King Foundation, The George and Fay Young Foundation and Mike and Mary Terry Foundation.

Research has shown that much of what you need to succeed in life is established before you enter kindergarten. For years, St. Philip’s has witnessed the undeniable benefits of a quality Early Childhood education. St. Philip’s Early Childhood students make up a little over half of the School’s student body. With this exciting growth mode, we now have three sections of Kindergarten!

Early Childhood education at St. Philip’s is not daycare, but school. Our youngest learners are provided a dynamic curriculum based, full day of school that fosters the concept that academic excellence and success begins at birth. Our curriculum and holistic approach to teaching opens their formative minds to early math, science and reading concepts. Additionally, there are enrichment activities for all early childhood students that include Technology, Music, Spanish, Art, Library, & Physical Education. By Kindergarten – if not sooner - our students are confidently reading, writing, doing arithmetic, and stand on a solid foundation for success.

“Gradus’ generosity inspires us to look forward to growing into our full potential and capacity over the next four years,” says Headmaster, Dr. Terry Flowers. “This is a tremendous blessing!”

MEET OUR NEW FACULTY AND STAFF

Gradus invests in impactful non-profit organizations in the Dallas area that encourage children and their families to live lives of meaning, to empower each individual to use their God-given gifts and talents to reach their highest potential, and to pursue excellence in school, in work and in life. The organization’s other current community partners include West Dallas Community School, Uplift Gradus Preparatory, The Birthday Party Project and Zero to Five Funders Collaborative.

Veteran educator, Zaneta Williams, joins St. Philip’s faculty as a 3rd Grade teacher. In 2008, Williams was one a few teachers from Texas to participate in a four year study by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to measure effective teachers. Ms. Williams has proven herself to be a truly dynamic and effective educator. “All students can learn, it just takes time to reach them,” she explains. “I’m a proponent for the use of the Arts in learning and teaching. Incorporating visual and performance art in my classroom enables me to reach all learning modalities.”

4th Grade Students Live a Day in the Life of a Frontier Boy or Girl

St. Philip’s annual 4th Grade trip to Wolf Run in Anna, Texas, is a great deal of fun and a wonderful time to bond for students who have finally made it to the level of Middle School at St. Philip’s. For the last five years, it has also been a unique opportunity to bring Social Studies to life. Academic excursions at St. Philip’s are valuable extensions of what is being taught in the classroom. For teacher Monique Williams, there’s no better way to impart to her students the rigor and details of pioneer life than to have them live as pioneer children for a day or so.

“I need to know that I am effectively reaching all students at all times in my classroom,” Mrs. Williams says. “It is my hope and prayer that the students will gain an exciting and new outlook on

history and the world that surrounds them by getting out of the classroom a few times a year.”

At Wolf Run, the 4th Graders learn about homesteaders and pioneers. They are divided into families and each given an acre of land that they must claim and measure. The students dress as frontier children, eat as frontier children (cooking their own dinner of “rabbit” stew), complete the chores of frontier children and even play games of the era. “We were outside a lot,” explains one of the students. “That was kind of hard for me because I stay inside a lot at home. And all my chores are inside chores. I think it was fun but tough to be a frontier kid.”

Lesson learned!

Early Childhood Program Receives New Technology Lab

Computers require interaction. Recent studies have shown given children are natural “manipulators” that learn through controlling the movement and interactions of their world, technology may enhance their brain development. This especially holds true for pre-school age children.

This fall, St. Philip’s opened the SALLY AND DEL LUTZ EARLY CHILDHOOD TECHNOLOGY LAB, established by the Lutz family in memory of Delbert Lutz and in honor of his wife, Sally. The lab is equipped with several touch screen computers and is utilized daily by our PreK3 – Kindergarten students. It allows St. Philip’s to enrich, individualize, differentiate and even extend the overall EC curriculum. In essence, this unique technology lab has become another effective “learning center” for our students.

“It’s important that we work towards staying updated with today’s technology,” explains Michella Young, St. Philip’s new Early Childhood Director. “We hope to one day have a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) environment for our students. Technology allows us to bring the world into the classroom.”

St. Philip’s is blessed to be a beneficiary of Sally and Del’s beautiful, shared legacy.

AT A GLANCE: COMMUNITY HEALTH

Through a partnership with Children’s Health Pediatric Group, formerly known as MyChildren’s, St. Philip’s has helped address the health needs of the South Dallas community it calls home for the last two and a half years.

Thriving Partnership Keeps Children Healthy and Happy

St. Philip’s is the site of one of approximately twenty unique pediatric clinics established by Children’s Health/Children’s Medical Center a few years ago in an effort to increase access to quality pediatric care in vulnerable communities. Of these clinics, St. Philip’s is home to the only pediatric clinic of its kind located on a school campus. Thus far, the partnership has been a tremendous success.

“We realize that all of us – educators, social service providers, and health care providers – must work in a coordinated manner to ensure that children reach their maximum potential,” explains Dr. Ray Tsai, President and Chief Medical Officer for Children’s Health Pediatric Group. The clinics specialize in health care for newborns through age 18 and are staffed by pediatricians and nurse practitioners. “Our practice at St. Philip’s has been successful largely as a result of the collocation with the school, community center, and other services offered on campus, including the day care and food pantry,” Dr. Tsai elaborates.

The clinic at St. Philip’s has served over 1,400 patients each year, with over 5,000 visits annually. Dr. Stormee Williams, a former St. Philip’s School and Community Center parent, served as the clinic’s pediatrician until this spring. Dr. Kathy Thompson currently heads the clinic as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Lead Provider.

“Our key goals are to improve the quality of life of our patients and to foster positive outcomes,” Dr. Thompsons shares. “When children have access to high quality healthcare and high quality educational opportunities, this fosters improved clinical and academic outcomes, reduces school absences, reduces emergency room visits, and the overall population health in the community improves.”

This thriving partnership with Children’s Health emboldens St. Philip’s efforts to foster a safe and healthy community.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

Children and Youth Benefit from St. Philip’s Engaging Summer Academics & Adventure Camp

St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s campus bustled with activity this summer, keeping over 150 children and youth (grades PreK through 7th grade) engaged with daily lessons in core academics, in addition to classes in dance, theater, music, and visual art. Our summer program continues to be one of the most essential and effective programs offered to the community. This year’s program was significant in that it reflected the “and” in St. Philip’s name. It was a successful and groundbreaking collaboration between the School and Community Center.

“It was awesome that we were able to run the academic and Early Childhood program with our own faculty and staff,” explains Community Center Coordinator, Lasheryl Walker. “We used very little outside resources to staff this year’s camp and it proved to be a win-win for everyone, especially, our campers!”

Several of St. Philip’s dynamic faculty rotated teaching the Early Childhood children or served as instructors for the core academic classes in Math, Science, Reading and Writing for the 1st through 7th grade campers. The majority of the campers are not students

of the School, so the camp provided participants with a true extension of the unique and transformative St. Philip’s School experience.

The program’s strength is in its affordability, quality, and diverse offerings. “Not only are we helping children beat summer learning loss or even get ahead academically but we are helping kids discover and explore their talents and other interests through our artistic collaborations,” says Walker. Church of the Transfiguration included several of our campers in their arts and Bible School program. Also, Big Thought collaborated with St. Philip’s for the fifth year in a row, ensuring the campers had access to proven effective artistic instruction by trained artists. Big Thought’s support enabled Soul Rep Theatre Company to provide one of their curriculum based children’s programs.

AmeriCorps also joined St. Philip’s again, providing several teaching assistants, many of whom are college bound alumni of St. Philip’s. “This experience will ultimately translate into their future,” says Liz Curfman, AmeriCorps Program Officer. “Many are taking advantage of the Education Award the program offers that amounts to $1,000 - $2,000 that can be used toward their college education.”

“I don’t believe there are any other places in the area that care for and nurture inner city children the way St. Philip’s staff did for my grandchild this summer,” shares Robert Carter, whose granddaughter participated in the summer program. “I am grateful to St. Philip’s for making their camp a beautiful summer and learning experience for so many children.”

AT A GLANCE: ATHLETICS

For several decades, St. Philip’s has provided arguably the largest and most diverse athletics program for 4 – 14 year olds in the southern sector of Dallas.

ATHLETICS

Building for the Future: Sports Illustrated and Ford Transform and Upgrade

St. Philip’s Athletic Field

St. Philip’s School and Community Center is honored to have been selected to receive a field refurbishment and upgrade from Sports Illustrated (SI) and Ford this fall. Work began in late September on this wonderful in-kind project (valued at $300,000) that included the installation of a new scoreboard, fencing, proper bleachers, field entrances, a concession stand, fresh sod and other landscaping pieces. The athletic field parking lot also received a make-over, as did the playground. Additionally, a mural was painted on a property adjacent to the field that St. Philip’s recently purchased. The property, formerly a neighborhood lounge, will be transformed into a field house next spring.

The project culminated on October 17 with BUILD FOR THE FUTURE DAY on which approximately 150 volunteers comprised of members of SI’s editorial team, current and retired Dallas Cowboys, St. Philip’s families, alumni, and other members of the larger community, converged on St. Philip’s to complete this amazing project that will bless the St. Philip’s community for years to come.

It was a full day of activity. While parents assisted with the field refurbishment, their children were kept busy with fun activities provided by Pro Players Foundation and other volunteers in St. Philip’s Snyder Activity Center and Early Childhood wing of the campus. The children were also treated to visits by NFL players Terrance Williams, Sean Lee, Darren McFadden, Cole Beasley and retired Hall of Famer Randy White, as well as TCU legend LaDainian Tomlinson.

An official ribbon cutting ceremony took place that afternoon and the new field was christened with a game played by one of St. Philip’s SAINTS Pop Warner football teams.

“This project is a true gift to the community we serve,” says Eddie Fletcher, St. Philip’s Athletics Director. “Our athletics program has always been a source of pride and it’s great to finally have a quality field.” The field will be utilized by St. Philip’s football, lacrosse, soccer, and baseball teams. “We look forward to being great stewards of this blessing.”

St. Philip’s Homecoming Makes a Big Comeback

St. Philip’s Homecoming Parade is back! In October, Saints from the School AND Community Center, along with their families, enjoyed a festive parade and Homecoming games. Homecoming was canceled last year, so this year’s effort was intentionally big and inclusive of the entire St. Philip’s Community.

As Texas/OU fans drove East on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard toward Fair Park, approximately 200 Saints, led by Dallas’ Kickin’ Brass Band, danced, walked, drove, and cheered West on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard from Madison High School back toward St. Philip’s campus. It was an eventful day and the Saints football teams won all but one of their games of the day.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

TROY VINCENT

A former first-round draft pick out of Wisconsin, Troy Vincent played 15 seasons in the NFL and is a past president of the NFL Players Association. He currently serves as the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations. In recent years, he’s become a supporter of St. Philip’s celebrated athletics program. This is due in most part to one of his former mentors, St. Philip’s very own Athletics Director, Coach Eddie Fletcher.

“Troy and my son (Eddie Jr.) played football together at the University of Wisconsin and they were roommates,” Fletcher says. Vincent spent a lot of time at Fletcher’s home where they would often talk about football and life. “Troy was very polite and outgoing and always positive, regardless of the circumstance.”

Vincent served on the board of Pop Warner Little Scholars Football, the league that St. Philip’s has been a member of for well over a decade. “It’s great to see him giving back,” says Fletcher.

AT A GLANCE: SENIOR SERVICES

St. Philip’s has provided programs serving its elderly neighbors for over three decades. In addition to Meals on Wheels, our elderly neighbors take part in a weekly transportation program, computer classes, health and wellness activities, and social programs.

AARP Collaboration Puts Technology in Seniors’ Hands

For well over a decade, the AARP has partnered with St. Philip’s in the establishment of computer classes for area senior citizens. The classes are held in the Senior Center, located on St. Philip’s campus. Three days a week AARP offers classes for elderly in the DFW area in need of technology skills for employment and two days a week, classes are offered for the elderly in South Dallas.

VeEtta Powell has served as the technology instructor for the last two years. “It’s wonderful helping seniors and serving the community with what they need,” she says. Powell, a senior herself, assists participants with resume and online job submissions. “Some come in just for fun and to learn the computer.”

Ms. Edna Geiger is one of the regulars. “I come so I can learn the computer again. I retired many years ago,” she explains. “I’m now seeking employment and need to gain a few skills so I can be hired.”

The program currently serves 40 – 50 seniors, ages 55 and older, regularly.

Neighborhood’s Elderfriendly Housing Creates Community

Quality and affordable housing has long been a priority for our South Dallas neighbors. Since the mid 1980’s, St. Philip’s has fostered collaborations and partnerships with various development and housing organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and the Forest Heights Neighborhood Development Corporation (FHNDC). The establishment of dignified, affordable housing for the elderly has been a significant priority for FHNDC that opened its Elderfriendly Phase 3 community a few blocks from St. Philip’s last year.

“It’s great for seniors to have affordable housing in this area and a community that cares about their well-being, their safety, and needs,” explains Brenan Morrison, who has served as property manager for FHNDC for six years. It didn’t take long for these

quaint homes to reach full occupancy. Residents are senior citizens living on fixed incomes. “The elderly want to live with dignity. They want to be a part of a community,” says Morrison.

The presence of Elderfriendly housing in our immediate neighborhood not only provides a solid roof over the heads of vulnerable senior citizens, but opportunities for social interaction, community involvement, and participation in several neighborhood community services, some of which are provided through St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

The majority of St. Philip’s neighbors are elderly. We have found this to be an asset instead of a burden. The contribution of their experience, leadership, and participation moves St. Philip’s closer to cultivating an inclusive, safe, healthy community for all.

St. Philip’s Welcomes New Principal, Kellee Murrell

“Education is my life’s work and my God-given passion,” says Kellee Murrell, St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s new principal. Mrs. Murrell, formerly principal at Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet in Richardson, has already proven herself to be a visionary and exceptional leader. As St. Philip’s principal, she is focused on differentiation, rigor and relevance, student engagement and project based-learning.

Murrell received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History Education from Clark Atlanta University and a Master’s in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary. In her early career, she was a history teacher at Tyler Christian Academy and later at Richardson West Junior High School in Richardson ISD. As a teacher, Mrs. Murrell was awarded the STARS teacher of the year award from the Excellence in Education Foundation and RISD Board of Trustees, an honor awarded to only five secondary teachers each year in the RISD.

A native New Yorker, Murrell is married to Mark Murrell, Deputy Chief of Community Prosecution and Community Courts for the City of Dallas, and has two wonderful children, Eden and Mark Jr., both students of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

Mrs. Murrell indulged us with a brief Q&A to help the St. Philip’s School and Community Center community learn more about our dynamic new principal:

A Q&A with Principal Murrell

What kind of student were you in elementary?

I was a good student and liked to learn. Both of my parents are educators. My mother taught at a parochial school and my dad at a public school. I attended a gifted school when we lived in suburban New York, prior to my family’s big move to the Bronx.

History was my favorite subject. I loved it so much that I majored in History in college.

So far, what are the three best things you think you’ve accomplished as Principal of St. Philip’s School and Community Center?

1. I’ve tried to spend time listening and building relationships with faculty and parents. The monthly “Pastries with the Principal” sessions have been successful and well received.

2. Reviewing and analyzing the curriculum. I’m really excited about our big emphasis on reading this year.

3. Expanding the “Team Lead” concept. This year, we have four faculty serving as team leads for ELAR, Math, Science, and Social Studies and a new Early Childhood Director. Their engagement and leadership is helping us build a culture of collaboration that is very exciting.

You were a parent before being named principal. Why did you and your husband choose St. Philip’s for your two children?

The high expectations, especially for children of color, is a major reason why St. Philip’s is the place for us. Our children are held accountable for their actions and performance. Also, teachers are very loving in the classroom. That’s another plus! I see them hugging my children, getting down on one knee at eye level, talking to my children and encouraging them. I feel great about where they are.

You have a great sense of humor. What keeps you laughing?

Almost anything. I’m pretty silly. And the kids…the students… they are hilarious.

Our call is to be a light in the lives of those we serve and our charge is to develop young people to carry that light with them throughout their lives. St. Philip’s caught up with four of its outstanding alumni to see how they are progressing in their “life after St. Philip’s.”

MARKUS CHRISTIE

Currently a 7th Grader at Parish Episcopal School

Class of 2015

“My transition to Parish has gone really well. Over the summer, I was able to practice a lot with the 7/8th grade football players. It helped me to make new friends. St. Philip’s prepared me for Parish because I am organized and I am able to handle the heavy work load. I really like Parish because it is a family environment. What I miss most about St. Philip’s are: my classmates, my teachers and Dr. Flowers, especially the boys’ Rites of Passage program. St. Philip’s was my first school family.”

GENESIS WILLIAMS

Currently a 9th Grader at The Shelton School

Class of 2013

“I am soaring at Shelton and I am comfortable in my skin. I believe St. Philip’s helped shape that early in my development. There have been opportunities where I have had to make decisions and because I know “if it is to be…” I’ve made decisions that will strengthen me for my future. I’ve maintained an A or very high B GPA since the 7th grade. I’ve been on both the cheerleading squad and now I’m the first African-American girl on the Chargerettes Drill team and I take that very seriously so that other African American girls at the school know this door is now open.”

WHYTNE STEVENS

Currently a Freshman at DePaul University majoring in International Studies

Class of 2009

“My transition into college has been pretty smooth both socially and academically. On campus, some

of the organizations I’m involved with are BSU and Nu’Ance Dance Team. So far, I enjoy the independence I have gained as well as exploring the city and pushing myself out of my comfort zone to try new things and meet new people. I think how St. Philip’s has prepared me best for college is with a sense of who I am as a young Black woman in America because of the Black history, well known and unknown, we studied while I was a student there. The thing I miss the most about home is good Tex-Mex and Mexican food, as well as the State Fair and home cooked meals.”

JONATHAN PENELTON

Currently a Special Education teacher at Pinkston High School Class of 1993

“I value my role as an educator because every day I have an opportunity to impact a life. In my years of teaching, I have noticed the attention children desire but unfortunately do not receive. Most of the time, they just want someone to talk to who they can trust. I am truly blessed to understand my purpose in life.

St. Philip’s helped me realize that everyone has a purpose and prepared me in many ways, like how to be proud of who I am. St. Philip’s has left a lasting imprint on my life and I owe a tremendous amount to every educator, every coach I encountered there.”

Alumni Seen on the Small Screen

In August, two of our alumni were featured on television shows. Bianca McClure (Class of 2002) was a regular on the short lived NBC sit-com Mr. Robinson and Gabrielle McBay (Class of 2004) were featured on the premiere episode of ABC Family’s new reality show Job or No Job

McClure, who was a regular musician on the huge hit Glee, is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts. She has worked steady in Los Angeles as a musician, teacher, and actress, since graduating from California Institute for the Arts a few years ago.

McBay, a private chef who aspires to own a chain of her own restaurants, recently graduated from TCU. She landed a job at Chicago’s Table 52 and a famous boss — Art Smith, Oprah’s former chef.

St. Philip’s Alumni Make Big Impact on 2015 Summer Program

Five of the nine AmeriCorps workers who served as teaching assistants for the summer program are St. Philip’s alumni. They included Evan White a Sophomore Psychology major at Morehouse College; Whytne Stevens a Freshman International Studies major at DePaul University; Joshua Perkins a Sophomore Forestry major at Warren Wilson College; Kalif Perkins, a Junior at Hampton University and Biology major; and Evan Brunson a math teacher in Dallas Independent School District.

Juan Hernandez (Class of 2003), who recently earned his teaching certificate, taught Art in St. Philip’s summer program

Bianca McClure (Class of 2002) The theme of St. Philip’s 28th Annual Fall Event was inspired by Saturday Night Live and proved to be a ton of fun! Many thanks to Carol Reed for allowing St. Philip’s to roast her for a great cause and to Bank of America and AT&T for their lead sponsorship. The lively roast, hosted by Cappy McGarr, was co-chaired by Gillian Breidenbach and Holly Reed . The Honorary Chair was Jack Matthews. Roasters included Ambassador Ron Kirk, Dale Hansen, Holly Reed , Chris Heinbaugh, and Gloria Campos. St. Philip’s 4th Grade students were a highlight of the evening, performing one of Reed’s favorite Earth Wind and Fire songs. This annual fundraising event raises monies to support St. Philip’s educational and social service programs.

Why I Give Parent Captains Impact St. Philip’s Family Annual Fund

– Carlton and Donna Elder, Early Childhood Parent Co-Captains

This year’s Family Annual Fund and North Texas Giving Day effort was a big success, raising over $60,000 for St. Philip’s. Our Parent Captains played a major role in ensuring a successful campaign. St. Philip’s is grateful to have so many dedicated families in the School. “We believe in the mission and vision of St. Philip’s to transform the lives of our children, our community, our country, and our world,” says Brandye and Harold Dede, devoted new leaders in the school. St. Philip’s believes in our parents and value their partnership in ensuring a successful education of our students.

St. Philip’s salutes the 2015 – 2016 Family Annual Fund Captains: Brandye and Harold DeDe Donna and Carlton Elder Sarah and Rongea Hill Judy London-Young and Elgin Young Kerry and Jonathan Arrington Tanya and Craig Watkins

WHY WE GIVE OF TIME AND TREASURE:

Sharon and Kneeland Youngblood

Sharon and Kneeland Youngblood have been enthusiastic supporters of St. Philip’s School and Community Center for the last seven years. Sharon currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees and Kneeland generously allowed St. Philip’s to pay tribute to him for its 2009 Fall Event.

“Excellence in education and the pursuit of it has always been a high priority for both Kneeland and me,” explains Mrs. Youngblood. “Our parents stressed it and we passed that on to our children. We feel that the same dedication, drive and love that nurtured us and we instilled in our kids is being demonstrated every day at St. Philip's, so supporting St. Philip's was just an extension of family for us.”

St. Philip’s Blessed by In-Kind Repair of Legacy Building’s Roof

St. Philip’s campus is comprised of buildings constructed from as early as the 1920’s to 2010. Given the nature of the St. Philip’s ministry, our facilities are utilized year-round. The almost 30 year old roof of the 20,000 square foot Legacy Building, home to lower and middle school classrooms, offices, and the school’s cafeteria, has been in need of repair for some time. Building improvements and modifications has been made a priority in maintaining a safe, healthy atmosphere for those served by St. Philip’s.

This summer, St. Philip’s was blessed to have Matt Kelley and his team from Empire Roofing to repair the Legacy Building roof at no cost to St. Philip’s. Gifts of “in-kind” are always welcomed, however, it is rare to receive such a significant gift in this way.

Empire Roofing specializes in commercial, industrial, office and institutional roof replacement, repair, and maintenance. St. Philip’s can now look confidently to any bad weather days ahead, knowing the Legacy roof has been refurbished and can withstand all Mother Nature has to offer. Empire Roofing’s compassionate generosity is a testament to the company’s strong reputation of excellence and service.

“It is a privilege to support our children’s future. If we don’t invest in our own children how can we expect others to?”

Mr. John Penson Patriarch of A St. Philip’s Legacy Family IN MEMORIAM

Suki Jarzemsky’s dad, John Penson, truly believed in St. Philip’s and its ministry. So much so, that the Penson family became one of our first Legacy families, that being a family with two or more generations of service and support. “Dad became involved with St. Philip’s through his good friend, Jim Bower,” Jarzemsky explains. “He was a member of the Board through the 1950’s and 1960’s and remained very interested in and proud of St. Philip’s throughout his life.”

Penson was one of the rare people who was able to witness St. Philip’s full genesis and transformation, beginning with St. Philip’s Church to the full ministry that exists today.

“He really loved Dr. Flowers and the times when he would show dad all of the new programs and buildings and when the children sang to him,” says Mrs. Jarzemsky, who has served as a member of St. Philip’s board several times over the last thirty years.

St. Philip’s School and Community Center was fortunate to have had such a dear friend in John Penson and the Penson family. His loyal, compassionate, and sincere support of the St. Philip’s ministry helped foster our evolution from a mission effort of the small congregation of St. Philip’s Church, the first black Episcopalian Church in Dallas, into a South Dallas institution committed to shedding light and spreading God’s love through all we do.

We now count Mr. Penson among the many angels who watch over St. Philip’s School and Community Center, better known as the “miracle on Pennsylvania Avenue.”

Celebrating 70 Years of Ministry and Service

St. Philip’s has come a very long way from its humble beginning with St. Philip’s Church, the first black Episcopalian Church in Dallas, founded in 1946. What we are today is a direct result of the mission efforts of the church’s small but mighty congregation, in collaboration with a few white Episcopalian churches from the mid 1950’s to recent years.

St. Philip’s School and Community Center will kick off a celebration of its 70 years of ministry and service with the 16th Annual Destiny Award Luncheon, to take place Friday, March 4, 2016 in the Snyder Activity Center on St. Philip’s campus. We are excited to announce that our featured speaker will be Oscar Nominated and Emmy Award Winning actress, Viola Davis!

In her recent historic Emmy acceptance speech (she is the first African American woman to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series), Ms. Davis stated “The only thing that separates women of color from everyone else is opportunity…”. She has broken barriers and conquered every medium from stage to television to film. We know her message at the Destiny Luncheon will be one of hope and a continued commitment to excellence.

Pat and Emmitt Smith will serve as Honorary Chairs of the luncheon, while Sherrelle Evans-Jones and Paula Mitchell will serve as Co-Chairs. Susan Fisk is the Underwriting Chair. St. Philip’s will also distribute its inaugural Humanitarian Award to Abby and Todd Williams at the luncheon.

As 2016 approaches, the St. Philip’s community looks forward to a year of reflection, remembrance, and revival!

ANNUAL REPORT

A Message from the Board Chair

Partners and Friends,

The strength of St. Philip’s School and Community Center is in what I call its ARCC – Academic, Religious, Cultural, and C ommunity Services - that translates annually into educated children and youth, healthy families, and a safer, more empowered community. Your gifts of time, talent, and treasure fueled our progress in the recent 2014 – 2015 year of service.

Effective collaborations and partnerships were critical to the success of several programs, including the expansion and grand opening of Our Community Pantry, located adjacent to St. Philip’s campus and operated by North Texas Food Bank The new pantry brings tremendous dignity to the food pantry experience and has served over 3,000 families since opening in August 2014. Also, St. Philip’s was able to expand its annual summer learning program to include Early Childhood students through grants provided by The Eugene McDermott Foundation and Perot Foundation. Their support ensured families had access to our quality, affordable and full day summer program. Finally, Episcopal School of Dallas and St. Philip’s served as the Local Presenting Sponsors for the MATHALIVE! traveling exhibit that was featured at The Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Our students and alumni continue to shine! St. Philip’s graduating 6th graders count Bishop Dunne, Cistercian Preparatory School, Episcopal School of Dallas, Lakehill Preparatory School, Parish Episcopal School, and The Winston School among middle school acceptances. 99% of our Class of 2009 alumni graduated high school and are off to various colleges and universities including Texas A&M, Spelman, DePaul University, the University of Oklahoma, and Morehouse to pursue degrees in fields ranging from Chemistry to Communications, to Political Science and Physics.

Additionally, St. Philip’s Philanthropy Office doubled in size this year and we are already seeing the benefits of being properly staffed. With your support, we are reaching higher heights and are positioned to grow other areas of the St. Philip’s School and Community Center ministry in the coming year.

Together, we are transforming lives for the better, one student, one family, and one block at a time!

St. Philip’s Foundation Report

The St. Philip’s Foundation was established as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation in March, 1997 to assist St. Philip’s School and Community Center by soliciting, receiving, investing, and managing gifts, grants, contributions and bequests to the School and Community Center. The mission of the Foundation is to support the long term-goals, purposes and objectives of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

It’s amazing to see what the endowment has grown into over the last 15 years. We’ve finally reached the $10 million milestone! This is the largest endowment of any South Dallas institution. $10 million means we can contribute more than 10% of St. Philip’s School and Community Center’s annual operating budget that is approximately $4 million a year. We are so thankful for those who have supported this effort.

The $400,000 that will be contributed to St. Philip’s in the coming year will specifically be used toward the School’s Tuition Assistance program that has doubled in recent years. Over 55% of our student body receives some type of Tuition Assistance. St. Philip’s is committed to ensuring a first generation private school education to working and lower middle class families. Thank you to all who’ve made this benchmark possible.

Ways to Support St. Philip’s TIME, TALENT & TREASURE

St. Philip’s has thrived through the tremendous support provided by a dedicated community of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends. For decades, St. Philip’s School and Community Center has embodied excellence, in large part because our community has given generously of its time, talents, and treasures. There are many creative opportunities to make a contribution to the important work of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

Consider Employee Corporate Giving

St. Philip’s receives designated funds through the United Way (#180), the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), and State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC).

Double Your Impact with Matching Gifts

Many employers match gifts by current and retired employees. This is an easy way to double your monetary gift or place a monetary value of your volunteer time to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Contact the Human Resources office of your employer for the form to match your gift to St. Philip’s.

Planned Giving

This is an opportunity for you to leave a lasting legacy at St. Philip’s by making contributions through a bequest to St. Philip’s in your will or naming St. Philip’s as a co-beneficiary in a life insurance policy.

Securities

Raymond James is the primary securities trader for St. Philip’s School and Community Center. By donating securities to St. Philip’s through Raymond James, 100% of the value of your securities is awarded to the School. Contact the Philanthropy Office for more information at philanthropy@stphilips.com or 214.421.5221 ext. 239.

Shop and Share

St. Philip’s benefits from your shopping with Kroger, Tom Thumb, Target and GoodSearch.

The Gift of Time

From landscaping to mentoring, there are many ways that you or your business/employers can become part of making an impact in the South Dallas area. We need your hands, too.
