The Soldiers’ Memorial The Soldier’s Memorial was erected in October 1920 in memory of the soldiers who gave their lives during the First World War. The statue of a Canadian soldier came from Italy. The Patriotic League was responsible for the $2000.00 cost but the four townships also contributed..

They still assist with upkeep. The other four monuments were erected after the Second World War. A pillar represents each township, Tiny, Tay, Flos and Medonte, a memorial to the soldiers lost from each. A memorial service is held annually on the second Sunday in September. The ladies of the Anglican and United Churches have for years alternately looked after the flowers. The first caretaker of the grounds was Mr. Joseph Drinkll.

Editor’s Musings I ain’t a world traveller but I do get all kinds of special offers for seeing many parts of the world.

I read an article about disappearing jobs and one of them is a travel agent. It suggests that since we are all so computer savvy, we are capable of doing the job ourselves.

My daughter-in-law and her friends just booked a trip to Jamaica and although they found the information on the world wide web, they went through a travel agent.

Why? A few years ago, along with my son, they went for a stay somewhere in the Caribbean. The place was overbooked.

As went the rumour, the resort would water you with alcoholic beverages and then put you up in some low rated hotel in a camouflaged effort to rip you off.

Since they had gone through a travel agent, they called him and within a short period of time, they were rebooked into another similarly rated resort. Those that had booked themselves were ripped off.

Remember, you were warned!

So there is this 69 year old gentleman who wants to be 49.

He figures that the older we are, the more we are discriminated against. At 69, when he asks for matches on these dating sites, they try to match him up with someone his age whereas at 49, there may just be more females looking for someone to party or travel with.

I think it should be allowed.

Science tells us there are the male and female sexes and about 1 in a 1000 do not have the usual male or female chromosomes or sex organs and they are referred to as inter sexes.

We are now being told that a person’s sex is an objective thing. Their gender is subjective. As I researched this (curiosity) it stated that Facebook (why them???) recognizes over 100 genders. On Google, it says there are 63. New York City recognizes 31.

Following along, our ages are objective, just like our sexes, but how you really feel is subjective.

Sometimes I feel like a 20 year old. So I go out with my sons and their buddies. Before long, I begin to feel 40, then 60 and about the time I go home (somebody delivers me) I am not sure if I feel like an 80 year old or a one year old because I want to have a sleep. And when I get up the next day, I start out as an old man. Generally, by the end of the day I do feel a bit younger. Another sleep or two and I

Dear Sir; The last issue of your paper brought up the election results. Looking at it, I spotted a curious situation where some candidates for the French School Boards seem to offer their services both in Tiny and in Oro-Medonte and in fact one of them appears to be successful in winning in both.

I am just puzzled about the rules which allow this type of situation to occur.

Personally, I have nothing against any of these folks, but it seems rather odd to see this happen in the real world.

Would the winner for the two boards be also taking a double salary?

Are there any residency requirements? Or would they have properties in both townships?

I hope that you might be able to illuminate us about this topic.

Best regards, J. Grodski Simcoe County public ratepayers elect trustees to a four-year term. The SCDSB is governed by 12 trustees - 11 elected to represent the various municipalities of Simcoe County and one appointed to represent the county’s First Nation communities.

In Simcoe County we have 16 Townships and two cities. Some elected trustees represent more than one municipality.

That’s why you may see candidates names in more than one jurisdiction. They only get one paycheck. again begin to feel much younger.

Can you phantom all the advantages.

My six year old grandson could suggest he is 65 and began getting a regular pension. Or better yet, 16. He could be driving all over the countryside. Maybe he should say he’s 21. All the doors to any bar would be open.

What about the 80 factor for retirement. You could work five years, pay the max into your CPP then claim you are 60 to make the 80 or 85 factor and phew, that was a tough working life but I am drawing the max in a pension - and that’s just the two (CPP & OSP) from the government.

I am rooting for this guy to get his age changed.

I am disappointed in those who are worried about Global Warming also called Climate Change or better yet, to get everything right Climate Disruption.

Example - the polar bears aren’t dying off. Instead of a few hundred, the population has grown and now there are an estimated 25,000. The Inuit hunt about 600 a year but that nowhere controls the growth. The Inuit says the burgeoning population is putting both the Inuit and the bears at risk and more bears should be harvested.

Should someone not be cheering since they were wrong and the outcome is better.

Crops - in the early 80s, the government would not sell any grains internationally because they were afraid that if we had a couple of bad years, there would be a shortage of food for our country.

Last year, there was a glut of grain all over the world. This year, despite the earliest snowfall ever in Western Canada wiping out some 50% of the crop, in a lot of places like around here - farmers are realizing some exceedingly good yields which is leading to another glut of grain which may be a good thing.

Grain production has doubled in the last 30 years and it has been suggested, that it will double again in the next 15 years.

My oldest son, Tim lives in Cochrane Alberta with his wife Jessie who is very involved with the gym at the Rec Centre, and their two boys Ethan 16 and Sean 14, Tim frames houses primarily in the Cochrane area but he has built some in Airdrie, Calgary, Canmore and Springbank.

Thursday morning, November 1st, I came downstairs to find him sitting at our kitchen table.

He said they had just finished a house and the next one wouldn’t be ready until Tuesday or Wednesday so the night before, his son found him a flight out of Calgary, leaving in a couple of hours so he literally threw some clothes in a nap sack, got a ride to the airport some 40 kms away and he was on a plane for Ontario.

In Toronto, 6:10 in the morning, he rented a car, headed out unto Hwy 401 and could not believe the traffic. As he saw the sign for Hwy 400 and Barrie, he almost breathed a sigh of relief thinking everyone comes into Toronto in the morning and leaves after work. He could not believe the traffic heading north, We told him this was a 24/7 occurrence. He said at sometimes out there, the roads are a ghost town.

Through the day he visited some of his friends.

On Friday evening, it was family night at brother Jamie’s with brother Chris, his parents, Donny Woods of course and other friends. This is were their dad realized that one might feel 20 but as the night wore on, the years began to catch up on him and when he went to bed, actually one of the last two, he was old.

Tim left on Tuesday afternoon but not before he had seen aunts, uncles, relatives, and more friends.

So this is a thank you to everyone that may have visited with him. You showed him what a great community he left some 20 plus years ago and maybe, he’ll be back for another visit sooner rather than later.

Good Vibes Coffee House It’s Free

I first performed at Good Vibes Coffee House for Fr. John Vella’s birthday party several years ago.

My partner, Peter Cox was used to performing with several different groups over the years but I mostly played and sang for my own enjoyment only. But I decided to take a chance and play with Peter for John’s birthday. Peter and I played guitar and I sang and it was fun.

We returned to the Thursday evening Good Vibes now and then and over time I got used to plugging my guitar in, using the mic, figuring out where to put the music stand and how to hold my guitar so Peter could see the chords I was playing. Sometimes Peter played double bass or banjo as well as the guitar.

We played at some other open mic’s and song circles as well and I got more confident with singing in public. Peter and I got better at playing together as we figured out how to “play our strengths”.

We started to get a theme and then pick four songs that would go together for that theme and would fit into the fifteen-minute time slot.

That inspired us to look for and learn new songs and I discovered that I really like learning new songs. I have experimented with learning songs in other languages as well as playing instruments like the kalimba, djembe, hand drum and cittern on occasion.

As we learned more songs, we decided to do house concerts to raise money for causes such as the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, Sistema Midland and the Friends of the Waverley Uplands which included some friends who are musicians and poetry that worked with the music.

So quite a lot of fun and new experiences have come from playing at Good Vibes that first time. The audience is very kind and appreciative and it is a great place to play even if it is for your first time. I would encourage anyone who wants to give it a try to come out any Thursday from 7 to 10 pm in the Mount St. Louis parish hall and see what happens from there!

Simcoe County Archives releases first WWI honour roll

Midhurst/Nov 1, 2018 – The Simcoe County Archives is pleased to announce the launch of Simcoe County’s first consolidated First World From only War (WWI) honour roll to recognize fallen men and women who had connections Located at Lafreniere auto sales (7106 HWY 26 STAYNER, ON) to Simcoe County. Entitled Simcoe County Remembers, In town plus mileage/fees. this virtual memorial contains the names of 1,006 men and women who died while in service or as a result of injuries sustained during WWI. The memorial is the first known WWI honour roll in Simcoe County that centralizes multiple lists and sources into one database. Following the war, many of the region’s townships, towns, and villages established their own individual forms of commemoration—Simcoe County Remembers complements these existing public memorials with one consolidated list.

“This is a tremendously important undertaking and truly documents the significant sacrifices of our men, women and families during WWI,” said Deputy Warden Terry Dowdall. “Simcoe County has a deep military history and the Archives continues to play an important role in preserving our past so it can be illuminated for future generations.”

To establish the Simcoe County Remembers database, Archives staff conducted extensive research of public memorials, published local histories, and official military records. Databases found on the websites of Library and Archives Canada, Veterans Affairs Canada (Books of Remembrance) and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission were also searched to find the names of the County’s war dead. Given the scope of this research, the County encourages residents to contact us about any known missing names and/or documentation errors at archives@simcoe.ca or 705-726-9331.

The Simcoe County Remembers database is intended to be as inclusive as possible. Criteria used to develop the list includes: • Was the individual born in Simcoe County?

We remember the bad times, the bad news, and the bad people who have affected our lives by what they have done. Every day, television and newspapers scream out tragedies, horrific devastation, and suffering.

Our minds are automatically drawn to such events.

But what about the good times, the good news, and the good people who have affected our lives and the lives of others by their good deeds and actions — the unsung heroes whom we don't hear about — people who changed the world for good?

Let us think, for example, about the fire fighters, the search and rescue personnel, and the police, the heroic men and women who risk and sometimes sacrifice their lives, so that we can live in safety and peace.

After the United States Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, making it illegal to assist black slaves escaping to their freedom, a secret network of black and white abolitionists helped African-Americans escape from enslavement in the American south to free northern states or to Canada. Hundreds of people risked their lives and made tremendous sacrifices as genuine heroes of what became known as the Underground Railroad, the largest anti-slavery freedom movement in North America, which brought between 30,000 and 40,000 fugitives to freedom.

The 100-year anniversary of the four-day Battle of Vimy Ridge in the First World War was celebrated this past week from April 9th to 12th. It helped to define Canada as an independent country, rather than a British colony. The 97,184 brave soldiers of all four divisions of the Canadian Corps, which fought together for the first time, suffered 10,602 casualties — 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded —

but their heroic sacrifice marked a significant Allied advance in the war, hastening its end.

There are many other people who have sacrificed themselves in order to bring about much-needed changes in this world. Their sacrifices, though, are nothing compared to the greatest sacrifice of all time: God the Father sacrificed His Son Jesus to suffer and die on the cross for the sins of the whole world.

Students are getting excited about the new addition that has been taking shape so close to them. Parents and residents of the communities served by EDHS are driving by to get a look. One resident takes his camera with him on his morning walks hoping to get a look at what is going on. Finally, he got a few shots in windows and open doors.

The new Fitness Centre is being tendered at this time and will soon be under construction. The different parts of this major undertaking (construction and reorganizing of the educational model) are well underway.

It has been great to see the number of local contractors that have been employed on this project.

Congratulations to Peter Beacock for his re-election to the Simcoe County District School Board. He says that he wants to see the EDHS project to completion, and he wants to see that the students of Simcoe County get the best possible educational experiences.

Sir: I just retrieved your November 1st News from the mailbox that I am forced to walk to in order to determine whether or not Post Canada is still (mal)functioning or not.

This is the first time that I have read your paper as we recently moved into the area.

Congratulations! Your full page rant made me think that we may be of one mind - grouchy. In my case, you could add the term 'old fart', but that might not yet apply to you.

There is much to talk about but bureaucracy always pushes my buttons. Besides the items covered, you might consider a few kind words about Bell Canada and Enbridge Gas. They are deserving of your attention. But maybe not in kindly terms.

By the way, I was surprised by your lack of mention of the new mayor of Brampton considering his association with things political in this region.

Governors general shouldn't be billing taxpayers after they've left office Have you ever had a job that comes with a generous expense account? How about one where you get to keep your expense account even after you leave the job?

If this sounds too good to be true, you haven’t heard about the great deal Canada’s governors general have been getting for the last forty years.

As the Queen’s representative in Canada, serving as governor general is arguably the most prestigious appointment in politics, with most serving for between five and seven years. While often described as a “figurehead,” there is no denying that, constitutionally, the governor general plays an important ceremonial role in our system of government.

As you might expect for such a position, the role comes with a lot of perks, including a salary of $288,000, a large staff, and an official residence (Rideau Hall) with 175 rooms.

But perhaps the most surprising perks of all come after a governor general has left office.

First, there is an inflation-adjusted pension of $143,000 per year. Not a bad return for five years of work.

Then, there’s the “start-up grant” for ex-governors general who want to establish a charity. Former governor general Adrienne Clarkson received $3 million to create the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

But the real kicker is that on top of all this, ex-governors general can still bill taxpayers for “expenses” for years after they’ve left office. And taxpayers don’t even get to know what it’s for. Current access to information laws don’t cover the governor general (or Parliament itself, for that matter), so we don’t even get to know what we’re paying for.

This shocking policy first came to light in 2011 when it was reported that Clarkson had billed taxpayers for more than $500,000 for “temporary” secretarial help since leaving office in 2005. Clarkson defended the expenses as necessary for her to deal with correspondence and requests for speaking engagements that continued to come in after her term as governor general ended.

Fast forward to 2018 and apparently Clarkson’s “temporary” needs have become permanent: her bill to taxpayers for expenses now stands at more than $1.1 million.

Interestingly, the expenses for a former governor general only appear in the public accounts as a separate line item if they exceed $100,000 — and since 1995, only two former governors general have gone over that threshold — Romeo LeBlanc twice (2008 and 2009) and Clarkson, who billed taxpayers for six figures a staggering nine of the 12 years since she left office.

Being flippant with taxpayers money is nothing new for Clarkson, who served from 1999 to 2005, and while in office was criticized for nearly doubling her predecessor’s spending and overshooting her budget for a trip to northern Canada by $4 million.

But as with most generous government policies it’s hard to blame the people with access to them for taking advantage of them. We can, however blame governments for not fixing them.

It’s hard to believe that in 40 years, no government bothered to fix this policy — especially once it became public in 2011.

Righting this wrong can’t come too soon. The Trudeau government should act, and they have good reason to since they’re already running deficits twice the size they promised.

To get back to a balanced budget, they’re going to need to find savings anywhere they can.

Eliminating this unlimited, secretive expense account for former governors general would be a great place to start.

Thank you to all who attended a Remembrance Day service on November 11th. Remembering those who served so that we have the freedom we enjoy is the least we can do. At sunset on November 11th, church bells across the country rang out for 100 times at 5 second intervals commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. The bells at St. Patrick’s in Phelpston joined in the chorus and we were happy to participate.

The past weekend weather gave us a small taste of winter and with that thoughts of the ice rink at the community park. Joe Racco has been the driving force at the rink for the past number of years and he has handed the reigns over to Chad Muir. Volunteers are always appreciated so contact Chad if you would like to help out and watch our Facebook page for cleanup and opening dates.

It’s exciting to see what being a rink rat can bring and the Racco family couldn’t been more proud of daughter Emily. Often seen at our rink and a student at EDHS, Emily has been awarded an academic and athletic hockey scholarship at Post University in Connecticut. Congratulations Emily and we look forward to the day you are representing Canada at the Olympics.

It’s time to make your plans to attend our 4th annual Tree Lighting on Saturday December 8th and our 21st Santa Claus parade on December 9th. In the past neighbors on several of the streets got together and entered their amazing entries in the parade. Rumour has it that a new street is putting together an entry that will create some new rivalries. We are looking forward to seeing what they have created and and remind everyone that we are looking for all sorts of entries. So get creative and let’s see your kazoo band, decorated lawn tractor or family float. If you operate a business what a great way to let the community know. All entries are welcome and check the Facebook page for more information.

Our community is becoming known for our Holiday Spirit and the light displays throughout. There is consideration of an unofficial contest for the best decorated home. Why not do a little extra this year and maybe you could be our first winner.

The firefighters have been selling the trees for over 20 years and are great supporters of our community events. Money raise goes directly back into the projects they support. Treating people who use drugs with dignity SIMCOE MUSKOKA - Stereotypes about people who use drugs are making it more difficult to provide treatment and prevent overdose, the Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy (SMOS) says.

In a campaign running through the fall, the coalition hopes to shift thinking, to create greater understanding and respect for people who use drugs, whether prescription or illicit.

“Similar to what occurs with mental health, people tend to hide their use of drugs to avoid the stigma that would be attached to them,” said Claudia Swoboda-Geen, a public health nurse with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

“For those using drugs, hiding their use can prevent them from seeking treatment out of fear of being shamed, or losing their jobs.”

The prevailing image of people who use drugs revolves around people who are marginalized and experiencing homelessness. This is a portion of the population of people with addiction, but Swoboda-Geen stressed that it can happen to anyone, regardless of their social or economic status.

“And regardless of their social or economic status, they all need to be treated with respect by family, friends, employers, service providers, and by society as a whole,” she said.

“Greater acceptance will allow those people to come forward to seek help when they want and need it.”

This campaign is a collaboration between the health unit and the Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy (SMOS), a collective comprehensive strategy aimed at reducing opioid harms in Simcoe and Muskoka.

Southern Georgian Bay home sales remain below year-ago levels in October

Residential sales recorded through the MLS® system for the Southern Georgian Bay region totaled 295 units in October 2018. This was down 8.4% from October 2017.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales totalled 2,679 units over the first 10 months of the year. This was down 20.6% from the same period in 2017.

The Southern Georgian Bay region comprises two distinctive markets.

Home sales in the Western Region, which includes Wasaga Beach, Clearview Township, Collingwood, The Blue Mountains, the Municipality of Meaford, and Grey Highlands, numbered 182 units in October 2018. This was down 8.1% from October 2017.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales in the Western Region numbered 1,588 units over the first 10 months of the year. This was down 20.4% from the same period in 2017.

Meanwhile, home sales in the Eastern Region, encompassing the Towns of Midland and Penetanguishene, the Townships of Tay and Tiny, Severn, and Georgian Bay Townships, numbered 113 units in October 2018.

This was down 8.9% (11 sales) from

October 2017.

On a year-to-date basis, home sales in the Eastern Region numbered 1,091 units over the first 10 months of the year. This was down 20.9% from the same period in 2017.

“Home sales were still running at somewhat subdued levels in October, a little below the 10-year October average in both the Western and Eastern Districts of the Association’s geographical area,” said Matthew Lidbetter, President of the Southern Georgian Bay Association of REALTORS®. “At the same time, active listings have barely budged from the historical lows they hit some two years ago. That is keeping the markets tight and placing a firm floor under prices.”

There were 443 new residential listings in October 2018. This was an increase of 20.4% from the 16-year low recorded in October 2017.

Overall supply remains near record lows. Active residential listings numbered 1,052 units at the end of October. This was up 6.3% from the end of October 2017.

Months of inventory numbered 3.6 at the end of October 2018, up a bit from the 3.1 months recorded at the end of October 2017 but less than half the 10year average of 6.9 months for this time of year. The number of months of inventory is the number of months it would take to sell current inventories at the current rate of sales activity.

The dollar value of all residential transactions in

October 2018 was $145.7 million, edging down just 0.6% from the same month in 2017.

Sales of all property types numbered 330 units in October 2018, down 7.3% from October 2017.

The total value of all properties sold was $157.9 million, up 0.9% from October 2017.

Sports by Mike Townes When I was just a kid, I dreamed of being an NHL player and a Major league baseball player but the talent was lacking in both these sports. Then I took up refereeing minor hockey and my thoughts of making the NHL as an official quickly came to an end because I was small, wore glasses and was not the greatest skater.

I then thought that maybe I could make it as a broadcaster for both baseball and hockey but, again, the talent level was just not there. So, in high school my old friend, the late John Brown, asked me to start writing a sports column for the old Elmvale Lance and I thought that maybe was my calling -- but as life got busier that calling went away just like the Lance.

I took up curling in high school and again lack of talent only took me to local bonspiels and competitions but it is still a sport I enjoy playing today.

I was good with numbers so I was a statistician for local hockey leagues, an intermediate hockey league and baseball leagues. But jobs like that were hard to come by that paid a salary.

I continued to play and coach baseball and after that I took up umpiring so I could continue to be close to the game. At 64, it was time to hang up the mask and counter as the legs started to go.

Sixteen years ago, I talked to Michael Jacobs about a sports column in the Springwater News and he said to go ahead. I thought I would give it a try but never expected to produce 416 consecutive columns in the paper after I first appeared in Michael’s paper.

Like everything in life, anything you start has to come to an end at some point, and for me that day has come. I may still send in a column or two but only when I have the time and something to say, but the consecutive columns will end at 416.

I would like to thank Michael for the chance to appear in his paper for 16 years, my wife Sandy for proofreading my column, and all the readers who took the time to read my column once in a while. It was a good run!

Ensure No Scout is Left Behind On Giving Tuesday

Scouts Canada’s No One Left Behind program offers financial support so that all youth can experience the adventures of Scouting On Giving Tuesday – November 27 – Canadians open up their hearts and generosity to important causes that make an impact in the community, to the well-being of people, and to social movements that make a difference. Giving Tuesday originated in the United States as a movement to give back after Cyber Monday and has now migrated its good will across North America and around the world.

This year, consider a unique way to give, by providing youth with the gift of adventure and self-confidence through Scouts Canada’s No One Left Behind program.

The program is aimed at reducing the barriers of participating in Scouting by subsidizing membership and related costs such as uniforms, outdoor equipment and camps. Did Niagara Falls ever stop flowing?

Yes! On March 29, 1848, Niagara Falls ran dry. A SouthWest gale blowing off of Lake Erie caused ice to jam and dam up at the mouth of the Niagara River causing the water flow over the Horseshoe Falls and American Falls to be reduced to a trickle. On the morning of March 30, 1848, the river flow returned to its normal rate.

Ward One Report Councillor Katy Austin This will be my last Ward One Report.

I thank Mike Jacobs, the editor of the Springwater News for allowing me to write in each edition of his paper during my term as Springwater Township Councillor for Ward 1.

Enbridge Gas Distribution is planning to build a pipeline to service the Georgian Sands planned subdivision at the east end of Wasaga Beach. The line would run along Vigo Road from Flos Road 4 West to Flos Road 8 West, then west along Flos Road 8 to Rylan Road. If approved, construction of the pipeline is anticipated to begin in late summer 2019. Residents who live on Vigo Road where the pipeline runs would have the option of connecting to it.

At its November 7th meeting, Council approved measures to enhance the safety of the pedestrian crosswalk at the corner of Queen St. E. and Simcoe St. They include line painting on the road (which has to wait until Spring), the addition of signs on Shaw St. and Simcoe Street reminding drivers to check the crosswalk before making right-hand turns, and “no parking” signs in designated spaces.

Because this crosswalk is still relatively new, drivers are urged to be especially vigilant before and after school.

With a new Council soon to be in place, members of the general public are invited to volunteer for positions on a number of Township committees, such as the Library Board, the Recreation Advisory Committee, the Agricultural Advisory Committee, and the new Cultural Activities Advisory Committee. A complete list of the boards and committees and how to apply can be found on the Township website, under http://www.springwater. ca/governance/committees. The deadline to submit an application is November 30th.

Two proposed new housing developments in Hillsdale are continuing to go through the Township approval process and will come before Council again in January, 2019. A total of 346 new homes are slated to be built to the north of Hillsdale elementary school. Once the Township gives final approval, the start of construction is up to the developer.

Good luck to the new Council, which will be sworn in on December 5th. I hope their term is as fulfilling as mine was.

Remembrance Day found us in Coldwater once again, where a large crowd came out for the Sunday service despite the snow and cold. The cenotaph is next to a gas station and it always amazes me (not in a good way) that people drive up and down the main street and even stop to get gas during the ceremony.

None the less it was a moving event and it's always lovely to see the school kids in the parade. These little ones stood pretty darn still during the ceremony and even doffed their hats during the lowering of the flag. This is something I had always wondered about myself - when the commanding officer calls out "Remove headdress!" is everyone supposed to take off their hat? Some post service google searching revealed that this is indeed the expectation, at least for men.

Four hours later we found ourselves some 300 kilometers away, in the town of Strathroy. There we attended the 100 bells ceremony to mark 100 years since the bells rang out across Europe declaring the end of the war.

At 5:05 pm, the Town Hall bell started ring, followed by the Clock Tower Bell across the street. (A photo of the beautiful town hall is included.) These two historic buildings talked to each other in this way for 100 rings as the residents of Strathroy stood silent in respect. It was one of the most beautiful thing's I'd ever heard or seen.

After the event, I saw a number of people leave their poppy at the cenotaph.

Poppy protocol requires that we always wear it on the left, always use a poppy purchased from a legion volunteer, and don't bling it up with other accessories.

My friend gave me a poppy holder that she purchased at Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie. It is a pin that perfectly and elegantly replaces the black centre of the poppy. You can't tell that it's not being held by the typical straight stick pin unless you look very closely. It is one of the most practical things ever invented: literally right up there with the screw driver and the skillet. If the Royal Canadian Legion were to sell these little pins with their poppies, I'll bet they would easily triple their revenue.

I confess that the custom of leaving poppies at the Cenotaph causes me some angst. If you can get it anchored safely into a wreath then I guess that's okay, but having a plethora of synthetic poppies and stick pins blowing around doesn't feel like a good idea.

So here are two practical suggestions for the Royal Canadian Legion, offered with respect and heartfelt interest.

1) Sell poppy holders - something safer and more practical than a stick pin - and

2) place something at the Cenotaph that holds the respectfully discarded poppies more securely.

My poppy holder hasn't prevented me from buying new poppies. Dave and I pretty much donate every time we pass a Legion volunteer. Keeping our Legions going, and continuing to educate our school children are the most important things we can do to ensure the sacrifices of those that went to war are not forgotten.

So keep buying those poppies. Lest we forget.

TRADESPEOPLE ARE AMONG THE HAPPIEST WORKERS IN THE COUNTRY, NEW STUDY SHOWS A 2018 study of 986 workers in the Skilled Trades reveals that they are among the happiest workers in Canada.

The report, called Trading Up: Why the Future of Education in Canada Must be Skilled​, provides evidence for why careers in the Skilled Trades should be described has highly fulfilling in higher education conversations, especially given the country’s desperate need for skilled workers in the industrial sector.

“Compared to the general working population, Tradespeople are much more likely to have fun at work and to feel like they can be themselves. They also have more freedom to be an entrepreneur or work anywhere in the world,” says Project Director Dr. Jon Callegher of George Brown College. “But most importantly, they feel a much stronger sense of accomplishment and purpose. This can’t be underestimated given the amount of time we spend at our jobs and our individual desire for meaning in life.”

While the report is written for an audience of educators, administrators, and students, Callegher hopes it also reaches immigrant parents, who are more likely than their domestic counterparts to view jobs in the Trades as low status.

The report reveals that 64% of tradespeople believe they have “really accomplished something worthwhile” through their work, compared with 47% of general working population. They are also more likely to report that their work gives them a “sense of success and achievement” (68% vs. 49%) and “a lot of satisfaction” (65% vs. 48%).

As well, 60% of tradespeople report “often having fun” while working, compared with 43% of other working Canadians.

“But what parents—immigrants and domestic—may not realize,” say Callegher, “is that careers in the Skilled Trades are much less stressful and allow for greater worklife balance than jobs in other sectors, in addition to being secure and well-paying.”

The need to promote the Skilled Trades in a new light inspired the creation of a YouTube series that Callegher calls Job Talks. His research team travelled across Ontario to film Tradespeople talking passionately about their jobs and editing the interviews into short, high impact videos for educators, counsellors, and trainers to share with students and parents.

“The response from educators and students has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Callegher. “It’s really captivating when you can see and hear the passion in someone’s voice when they talk about their work.”

The video series continues to grow, which hundreds of subscribers and over 65,000 views.

“For our researchers, the community acts as an extension of the classroom,” said Krista Holmes, Director of Research and Innovation at the college. “Our social innovation projects build a lasting bridge between the college and these communities that surround them. Job Talks is a prime example of this principle in action: the project has taken raw data and mobilized it to tell a meaningful story of workplace fulfillment and change the way we view the trades.”

The study was conducted through funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council's (SSHRC) Community and College Social Innovation Fund (CCSIF) and from the CWB Welding Foundation. Project partners also included GBC’s Office of Research & Innovation, Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies, Q.i. Value Systems, Skills Ontario, and the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum.

Callegher’s newest initiative is Job Talks Construction, a deep-dive survey of construction industry workers in Ontario in partnership with the Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON), the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO), the Ontario Residential Council of Construction Associations (ORCCA), and the Ontario Skilled Trades Alliance (OSTA).

The development of toothpaste began as long ago as 3000 to 5000 B.C. in ancient China and India.

According to Chinese history, a learned man, Huang-Ti, studied the care of teeth and claimed different types of pain felt in the mouth could be cured by sticking gold and silver needles into different parts of the jaw and gum. This and other theories led to the development of dental cream.

During the years 3000 to 5000 B.C., Egyptians made toothpaste using a recipe of powdered ashes of oxen hooves, myrrh, powdered and burned egg shells, and pumice. Directions were given that all should be mixed together, but there were no specific instructions as to how the powder should be used.

Bernie Siegel, author of Love, Medicine and Miracles, says that while a doctor is able to give a diagnosis, no one can give an accurate prognosis. This is a very empowering thought. What it means is that even if one has been diagnosed with something serious, or chronic, no one can say for sure what will happen.

Consequently, a prognosis might needlessly become a self-fulfilling prophecy. A negative prognosis can lead to giving up. Seigel says that those who make the best recoveries are those who do as many things as possible to help themselves.

If someone essentially tells us there is no hope, what is the motivation for trying to get well, or to improve our situation? I recently read a psychological assessment that was done on one of my clients when she was in elementary school. The writer stated this individual would never perform strongly academically. Now in high school, the student's marks are all over 80% and some are in the 90's.

Another client was told by his doctor that he had an anxiety disorder, and would have it all his life. By our third session, he had drastically reduced his medication and was making superb progress.

We have all heard stories of individuals who were told they would never walk again, but did, or those who were given less than a year to live, and were going strong twenty years later.

SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIP - On Nov. 8, 2018 at approximately 7:30 p.m., members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Springwater Fire Department and the Simcoe County Paramedic Service responded to a fatal collision on County Road 92, west of Elmvale, in Springwater Township.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle traveling west bound on County Road 92 crossed into the path of an east bound motor vehicle. The vehicles collided headon killing the 69-year-old male driver of the east bound vehicle. The 54-year-old female driver of the other motor vehicle suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre.

The investigation into this fatal motor vehicle collision is ongoing with the assistance of the Central Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit (TTCI). All lanes of travel have since been reopened.

Orillia OPP Concerned About Vehicles Passing Stopped School Busses The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have received complaints from bus drivers that motorists are not stopping when children are getting on and off the bus while on Orillia OPP patrolled roads.

When driving on a road without a median; Drivers travelling in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing.

When approaching a stopped bus from the front, stop at a safe distance to let children get on or off the bus and cross the road.

Don’t move forward until the red lights have stopped flashing or the bus begins to move.

When travelling on a road with a median traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop.

Drivers who fail to stop for school busses can face heavy fines and possible jail time. Vehicle owners can be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus even if they weren’t driving.

Orillia OPP Warning Public of Contractor Scams The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to create awareness of a potential scam affecting people in the Orillia and surrounding area.

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO FRAUD CHARGES -On January 25, 2018 members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report that an elderly female from Clearview Township had been defrauded out of several thousands of dollars.

OPP RESPONDS TO 25 REPORTED WRONG WAY VEHICLES IN ONE MONTH; A rash of incidents involving a vehicle travelling the wrong way on a highway or road has the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) raising awareness about what drivers should do when encountering a vehicle travelling the wrong way towards oncoming traffic.

Between October 5 and November 5, 2018 the OPP responded to 25 reports of a vehicle travelling the wrong way. A collision occurred in five of the incidents and two people lost their lives in two of the crashes. Twelve (12) charges have been laid so far in five of the incidents, two of which are driving while ability impaired by alcohol and/ or drugs.

There were 182 wrong-way vehicle incidents on OPPpatrolled roads last year (2017) and 207 so far this year (2018).

Tim Hortons cookies give GBGH thousands of reasons to smile The Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) Foundation is the proud recipient of $35,882 raised during the 2018 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign in September. Chigamik Launches Biidaaban Doula Collective for Indigenous Families Across North Simcoe Muskoka Midland, Ontario – November 7, 2018 – Centre de santé communautaire CHIGAMIK Community Health Centre (CSC CHIGAMIK CHC) is pleased to announce the launch of an Indigenous Full Circle Doula Collective called Biidaaban, meaning “Sunrise” in Ojibwe or Tawenti:ne in Haudenosaunee. Funded through The Journey Together: Ontario’s Commitment to Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, the money will directly support Indigenous families in North Simcoe Muskoka to pay for prenatal, birth and postpartum doula services. This initiative was created in response to the Ontario Government’s priority to address the legacy of residential schools, support Indigenous culture, and reconcile relationships with Indigenous peoples. All doulas received traditional birth teachings by Elder and honoured Traditional Healer, Pauline Shirt, and doula certification through Bebo Mia.

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THIS HOUSE? This photograph was taken in 1909 and mailed from Phelpston to Toronto. While the location is not indicated (it was a private post card) it is likely to have been in the Springwater area.

Photographs of men at work are rare. This image shows something that frequently occurred, but was rarely recorded. The three men are masons and the women with a child, one presumes, is an owner of the house. They are not building the house. It was a three bay (window, door, window) frame house, probably one and a half story, covered with cove siding - the sort of house built in this area in the 1880s. Note the curved head to the windows and the transom light over the door. They are building or replacing a front porch. It seems odd that they are creating a masonry foundation for a porch on a frame house, but that seems to have been the case. The man on the right is holding a straight-edge and the man in the middle is using a tool to score the wet plaster or stucco to give an appearance of stone blocks or ashlar.

The postcard was written by someone named “Harry” to Frances, Mrs. P.J. Conklin in Toronto He says the picture is of him and the two men he works for and wonders why “Mary” does not write. The explanation seems to have little to do with the family of Frances Conklin, the former Frances Williams, an English immigrant who married Percy Conklin in Toronto in 1908 but who seems to have had few relatives in Canada. The card may well relate to various member of Percy Conklin’s family, all of whom lived in Hillsdale just before this card was sent. The “Harry” who sent the card may have been Percy’s brother Harry Conklin and the “Mary” who is failing to write may be their sister Mary Conklin (she later married John H. Kinsman, a detective in Toronto). They were all children of Joseph Conklin, a harness-maker and saddler who had married in North Dakota and lived a few years in Emerson, Manitoba, but who was a saddler in Hillsdale in 1901, later moving to Toronto where he worked as a harness-maker. Their grandfather, John Conklin, had been a carpenter in Collingwood. Their first cousin, Mary Adelaide Conklin, was married to Lee Towns of the Elmvale area.

Doula care offers a holistic approach to birthing and has been associated with better health outcomes for mother and baby. Chigamik’s Biidaaban Doula Collective is made up of Indigenous doulas who provide emotional, physical, and spiritual support and advocacy for women and families during pregnancy, labour and after birth. The Collective also provides support around reproductive health including, fertility, abortion, perinatal loss, and adoption. Traditional supports include the creation of a birth plan, learning about Indigenous practices, remedies, and ceremonies, and being connected to family, community and nature.

“Indigenous teachings about pregnancy and birth are passed down from generation to generation through watching and learning from elders. However, for many, traditional knowledge sharing has been lost due to colonial policies and interventions,” said Jessica North, Community Health Manager, CSC CHIGAMIK CHC. “We want to provide appropriate and culturally-relevant support needed to reclaim the birthing process for Indigenous women and their communities.”

Through the Doula Collective program, expectant mothers and their families will have access to a birth doula, postpartum doula, overnight support, loss and bereavement care, fertility and reproductive care, as well as navigation to a number of Indigenous resources at Chigamik and externally.

Doula services are free and available to anyone who self-identifies as First Nation, Métis or Inuit across North Simcoe Muskoka, on or off reserve.

In Canada, spruce spider mites can cause sporadic or localized damage to various species of conifers. This species is also a problem in nurseries. The last serious spruce spider mite outbreak in British Columbia occurred in 1975, when 800 ha of forest, mainly young Douglas fir, were severely affected.

Spruce spider mite populations remain low during periods of high humidity and heavy rainfall. Infestation in ornamental trees can thus be avoided by abundantly spraying the damaged tree on a regular basis and repeatedly, in order to destroy the silk threads and dislodge mites. This will also increase the moisture level of the foliage and thereby hinder mite development.

I am the first to agree that aggregating data for good policy making is a sound practice of Statistics Canada, but I have grave reservations of what this new information bank is for, how it will operate, and most importantly who will have access to it. It may be helpful to policy makers to have accurate financial data in the digital age, but the government should explain how this can be done without account holders’ permission. It seems to me that the recommendation of the federal Privacy Commissioner, for banks to first remove any personal identifiers before the data is provided to StatsCan, is a far better way to ensure the privacy of highly sensitive personal information. It would require oversight and transparency to ensure the safeguards are in place to protect this information. But, until these processes are in place, the government should step back from any further gathering of this information.

Greetings Springwater residents. As I write this there is snow falling and I am a little excited about this although I don’t anticipate it sticking around for long. The reason I’m happy about the snow is because the rain over the last several weeks has made it so miserable and dark, the whiteness of the snow brightens everything up a little bit.

Tree Lighting - Sunday November 25th is a date you should definitely mark on your calendars. It is the annual tree lighting at the Minesing Community Centre. Come out with family and friends between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Santa and Swampy will be available to take pictures with so bring your camera to snap those photos. There will be face painting by Mrs. Claus, Christmas caroling and crafts, colouring for the kids and Christmas vendors set up in the community centre. There will also be pizza and hot chocolate to enjoy. In an effort to help support our local food banks, we will be collecting food and monetary donations. Ontario Gives Back to its Heroes

Province to Offer Free Fishing to Veterans and Active Armed Forces Members TORONTO — Ontario's Government for the People is planning to honour past and present members of the Canadian Armed Forces, who have sacrificed so much for the people of Ontario and Canada. Work is underway to amend fishing regulations so veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members can enjoy free recreational fishing by early 2019.

With this change, all veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members who reside in Ontario would enjoy recreational fishing across the province without having to buy a fishing licence.

"We enjoy the rights and freedoms we have today because of the sacrifices of those brave women and men throughout history, and those actively serving to defend our rights and freedoms," said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. "The people of Ontario are grateful for the service of our veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members who have, and continue to defend our freedom and values. These heroes deserve our gratitude and respect, and this is one small way we can show that."

"Recreational fishing is an important part of the lives of many Ontarians. Whether you're a beginner or expert, fishing is an excellent way to get outdoors, relax, de-stress and get involved in your local community," said Yakabuski.

Ontario has a great diversity of freshwater fish and is recognized worldwide for its recreational fishing. By allowing veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces to fish for free, Ontario is making life a little easier for those who gave and continue to give so honourably with their service.

This is one of several steps Ontario's Government for the People is taking during Remembrance week to show Ontario's appreciation for veterans, Canadian Armed Forces and their families. The province recently announced they will ensure Royal Canadian Legion branches in the province are exempt from paying property tax.

The Premier has announced consultations on a new hotline for military families moving to Ontario. This hotline will make it easier to find information on healthcare, schools, job opportunities, child care, licensing for drivers and vehicles and other programs and services.

The government has also announced plans to build a memorial that honours heroes of the war in Afghanistan, on the grounds of the Ontario Legislature.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to protect your hearing

Work-related noise-induced hearing loss (or NIHL) is much more common than people think. In fact, thousands of Ontarians report having work-related hearing loss each year and over 30,000 people needed support from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) for workrelated NIHL between 2007 and 2017.

One of these people is Doug, whose career as a mechanic cost him his hearing. His story is featured in the WSIB’s new NIHL awareness campaign to alert people to the risks of workplace noise.

“We see people every day who are suffering from hearing loss as the result of decades spent working in places that are just too loud,” said Tom Teahen, WSIB President and CEO. “The problem is, it’s easy to get used to loud, harmful noises in the workplace, since they’re rarely painful or irritating. But long-term exposure to these noises can cause irreversible hearing loss.”

The WSIB campaign uses online videos, radio ads and social media posts to illustrate that if the noises in workplaces were unpleasant – rather than just loud – people would be more aware of how much damage workrelated noise can actually cause. The campaign website, www.toneitdown.ca, hosts interactive tools, such as an “age of your ears” test and examples of different types of workplace noises and their corresponding decibel reading.

In addition, it provides general information about NIHL and a simple four-step outline to help reduce damaging noise in the workplace, including: recognizing the risk, assessing the cause, controlling the noise and evaluating the solution.

Wondering how loud is too loud? Prolonged exposure to noise over 85 decibels (dBA) can cause damage to your hearing over time. For context, the noise levels in a busy restaurant range from about 70-90dBA, and noise from power tools (i.e. an electric drill) can range from approximately 90-120dBA. The top two sectors for allowed NIHL claims over the last 10 years were manufacturing (25%) and construction (16%). Men accounted for most (93%) of all industry claims.

“The good news is that NIHL is the only type of hearing loss that's completely preventable,” said Elizabeth Witmer, WSIB Chair. “We want to get workplace-related noise induced hearing loss on people’s radar early, because if they understand the dangers of noise, they can protect their hearing for life.”

In an effort to sell more licensed apparel, minor-league baseball teams were changing their names so often that the sport's governing body now limits franchises to team name changes every three years.

Official Plan Update The Township of Tiny has prepared a new Official Plan in accordance with Section 17 of the Planning Act, R.S.O. 1990 that sets out where and how the Township will grow to the year 2031. The Official Plan establishes the framework for future decisions related to land development. The Official Plan outlines what is generally permitted within each land use designation and includes associated policies.

The Official Plan requires updating as there have been many Provincial and County of Simcoe policy changes.

Over the last two years, the Township has completed significant public consultation in the form of three Open Houses and a statutory Public Meeting. The final draft of the new Official Plan will be presented to Council at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. This final draft will be available once the November 14th, Committee of the Whole Agenda is posted on the Township website, at www.tiny.ca.

County of Simcoe The new County Council elect will be sworn in Dec. 11, 2018. Of the 32 County Councilors, there will be 15 new ones. County Council is composed of the Mayors and Deputy Mayors from the 16 member municipalities.

Results of the new County textiles and electronics collections…

The textile collection occurred over two designated weeks in June and the electronics collection occurred over two weeks in September. In both cases, special coloured bags were distributed via Canada Post as part of the promotion and education campaign and also to be used by residents to contain textiles and electronics at curbside for collection.

The textile collection netted 107 tonnes of used clothing, linens, shoes and accessories (versus a total of 50 tonnes collected at all of the County waste facilities last year). The amount collected curbside was somewhat short of the 150 tonnes originally estimated. County staff feels that the rea-

Momma’s at the door talking to a soldier, he whispers in her ear and offers his shoulder.

She closes the door and tries to walk, her body trembles as she struggles to talk.

“Daddy” she starts, then pauses with fright, “He actually did win the fight” I cry with glee and ask, “When will he be home?”

Her face falls and frowns, it looks like stone.

I’m sorry child even though our side is best, he will not be coming back, nor some of the rest.

Only love from your daddy will be coming back home, we will honour him with his name carved in stone.

He and his fellows have created freedom, oh I wish that we could be with him He would want you to have this as your tears are shed, A poppy he pressed to remember the dead.

The electronics collection netted over 171 tonnes of electronics and small electrical equipment (versus a total of 499 tonnes collected at all of the County waste facilities last year). The amount collected at curbside was somewhat short of the 210 tonnes originally estimated. Staff notes that there were reports of widespread scavenging in some urbanized areas prior to the electronics collection occurring.

Scavenging is an issue as electronics may contain personal information and offenders, looking to make money only, may not utilize Ontario Electronic Stewardship approved processors toensure proper environmental outcomes. Further, scavenging results in a loss of revenue for electronics which partially offsets the cost of the collection program.

Staff have learned from the experiences gained during these first curbside collections for textiles and electronics and will work to improve processes for next year. This includes pursuing changes such that collections occur on the regular waste collection day in each area. Staff anticipate that this will further increase convenience for residents, reduce opportunistic scavengers and maximize diversion of textiles and electronics from landfill.

The simple act of buying a chocolate chunk cookie lovingly decorated with blue eyes and a cheerful pink smile raised $5,029 for Elmvale District High School as part of a record breaking national campaign.

Aboriginal Influence on Modern Sports

It shouldn’t be a surprise that a number of modern sports originated within the Aboriginal communities. Canadians call the sports their own, but should remember where they first saw them.

The snowshoe, toboggan, lacrosse stick and canoe were all adopted by early European settlers as the Coureurs Des Bois and Voyageurs brought them back from trading encounters.

The Aboriginal communities used the games as training for their youth. The skills learned translated into real life and survival.

It also developed an understanding of their limitations of their skills, like how far they could throw or run.

Archery, spear throwing, racing on foot or canoe and wrestling were all activities that developed ability. Some playing fields were over a kilometer long and warriors played the games building their hunting and war stamina.

Aboriginals were playing many different ball games for centuries before the first non- aboriginal involvement. The National Lacrosse Association of Canada was formed in 1867, it was the Dominion of Canada’s first governing body of sport.

When the game made its first appearance in England in 1867, the sixteen-player team from Canada that played an exhibition game was made up mostly of

Iroquois players and a few other natives.

Canada would go on to promote lacrosse as it’s official summer sport in 1994.

Debate exists as to when we learned the game. In 1637 a Jesuit priest reported that he watched whole villages playing a game against each other called “crosse.”

Another theory was at the Jesuit mission close to Montreal the Mohawk played so much ball, it interfered with church attendance. When William George Beers wrote up the first rules in 1860 and changed the deerskin ball to one made of rubber, he became the father of modernday lacrosse.

Forgetting about the elite level sports, how many Canadians use snowshoes, toboggans, canoes and kayaks as part of their daily lives? How many times have we seen stumbling snowshoes, flying toboggans, or flipped over canoes at local events.

I find it hard to imagine the Canadian landscape without these items, or these sports. Over time we would have probably developed them through need, at least snowshoes and canoes.

Still we can be thankful the First Nations had already been there, learned that, and showed us the way. Thank you.

The Holiday Season is just five weeks away and leading up to that, there are lots of community events including tree lightings, parades, sleigh rides and other celebrations. Please refer to the Springwater Link in this paper and the Township website postings to see details of the many events and come out and enjoy. It is a wonderful time of year.

New Council Orientation The period after the municipal election, from October 23rd until the end of this term on November 30th, continues to be busy. Regular meetings of Springwater Council and Simcoe County Council have continued. County Council also had a full day meeting on the preliminary draft 2019 County financial budget.

Township and County orientation sessions are also occurring during this period. Presentations topics include: Municipal powers and the relationship under the Province of Ontario – governance versus administration and the relationships between elected officials and staff. Understanding the ground rules for ethics and accountability and other oversight mechanisms.

Background information will be shared and distributed to councillors, with numerous presentations and discussions regarding the operations of the Township and the County.

Springwater Inaugural meeting will be on December 5, 2018 at the Township Administration Building. There is reserved seating for Councillor family members and additional seating for the public so please arrive at 6:00 pm to get a seat. The first meeting of the new council is on December 12th, starting at 6:30pm.

County Simcoe Inaugural meeting is on December 11, 2018 at 1:00 pm and is open to the public. Part of this Inaugural Meeting will include Council electing, from amongst themselves, the positions of Warden, Deputy Warden and a Chair and Vice Chair of each Business Sections of County Committee of the Whole (Human Services, Corporate Services and Performance Management Business Sections). Each of these positions will be for a two-year term. I was Vice Chair of Performance Management last term and I plan to run for the Chair position.

Simcoe County Council has 17 returning councillors, leaving 15 new County councillors joining (47%) County Council.

2018-2022 Committee and Board Members The best way to get involved, have a say and make a difference in your community is to join one of the Township committees or boards. The deadline to submit the Committee Application Form is November 30, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. Please complete and submit completed application forms by email to info@springwater.ca or in person or by mail to 2231 Nursery Road, Minesing L9X 1A8. These will be considered by Council at the beginning of 2019.

SAUNDERS, Robert Horace - April 18, 1942November 4, 2018 - It is with great sadness that I share with you the passing of Robert (Bob) Saunders on November 4, 2018 at Hospice Simcoe. He is survived by his wife Arlene, children Faye, John, Neil, Jim, several step children and many nieces and nephews. Some will remember Bob from his hydro pole climbing days, his time as a town councillor in Cookstown while running his TV sales and repair business. He participated as a costumed clown in some Barrie Shriner parades. His many years as a real estate broker allowed local travel and the opportunity to meet many neighbours. He was an ardent RVer and covered most of North America on road trips while boating on the rivers, streams, and lakes he passed. He always loved to sketch, draw and paint.

Many local businesses and homes have examples of his hobby on their walls to this day He was never happier than when flying a small plane or was ‘on the ice’ curling.

He will be considerably missed. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of RVH for their compassionate knowledgeable treatment. If one wishes to make a donation to Hospice Simcoe it will be greatly appreciated. Bob’s passing will leave a huge space in the many lives he touched.

A private interment service will be held at a family cemetery in Uxbridge, ON. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, November 9, 2018 between 2-4 pm at the Elmvale Legion.

GRAIN FARMERS OF ONTARIO CONGRATULATES PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT ON REPEAL OF CAP AND TRADE AND REQUESTS REFUNDS FOR FARMERS TAXED UNNECESSARILY GUELPH, ON (November 5, 2018) – Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province’s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario’s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean and wheat farmers, commends the Ontario provincial government for cancelling the current Cap and Trade system. In addition to that, Grain Farmers of Ontario is requesting that the provincial government issue refunds to farmers who paid into the program before the repeal.

“We are pleased to see the passing of this legislation and we know that it will provide much needed relief for Ontario farmers,” said Markus Haerle, Chair, Grain Farmers of Ontario. “The cap and trade system that was implemented not only made Ontario farmers uncompetitive in an increasingly competitive industry, but it was not an effective way to actually find solutions to climate change.

“Our farmers have been unnecessarily taxed while having no opportunity to showcase the benefits of new and updated farming practices used quite significantly across Ontario that help to address climate change, or to use those approaches as a means of tax reduction,” Haerle said. “In light of the government’s repeal of the program, Grain Farmers of Ontario expects that its farmer-members will be compensated for the costs they were burdened with to this date as a result of the program.”

Edwin Espinal Ten Months Incarceration: A Honduran Human Rights Defender Visits La Tolva Prison As Edwin Espinal’s incarceration in a maximum-security prison reaches the 10th month anniversary next week, and Karen Spring and Edwin’s one-month wedding anniversary, I am writing this update from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where I will be visiting until November 21st.

I have come to Honduras to support Karen, the political prisoners, and to meet with representatives from the Canadian Embassy in Tegucigalpa. Ambassador James Hill has scheduled a meeting with my daughter Karen and I this Friday.

Today we went to La Tolva Prison to accompany Karina Flores, a Honduran human rights defender to wait for her outside the prison as she went in to visit Edwin Espinal and Raul Alvarez. We were denied access; Karen has only been allowed one visit since their marriage inside the prison. I await special permission to enter this week.

As Karina Flores entered the prison, she was met by prison authorities and 10 riot police who accompanied her during her visit. It is very difficult for human rights defenders to obtain permission; all attorneys and officials are Juan Orlando Hernandez National Party supporters.

After requesting permission many times and being denied, Flores was finally granted entry after she complained to the Ministry of Foreign Relations. Today it took over two hours of waiting at a desk in the hallway of the prison until she was allowed meetings with a lawyer, psychologist, and nutritionist, then with Edwin and Raul.

Flores described her visit, “They had me waiting in the hallway of the prison, just outside the cell block where Edwin and Raul are. I was surrounded by 10 totally masked riot police and 4 masked military police. I felt like it was an intimidation strategy just to scare me and to discourage me from visiting. They had teargas cans strapped to their chests, two large batons for beating people, and huge automatic weapons by their sides. Emotionally it really impacted me because I was by myself, a woman surrounded by 14 totally armed men. I felt like I was being terrorized. I felt total terror.”

After a long wait, Flores asked to see Edwin and Raul, the main purpose of her visit. “They said they couldn’t bring out Edwin and Raul because it was difficult and dangerous, because they had to put the inmates who were in medium security areas back first to avoid any uprisings between modules. Since two were murdered inside the prison on September 30, tension between prison modules is rising.

I was so terrified.”

Flores commented on the dire situation inside the prison.

“When I started to walk toward the module, there were a terrible smell. It got worse. The penitentiary police had medical masks on top of their balaclavas.” She asked why and they responded that it is because of the risk of tuberculosis. Flores asked, “Why didn’t you give me a mask? Why don’t the prisoners have one? The environment in there is so bad, the smell is terrible, you could feel the contamination in the air.

And the water situation?

They are drinking water that is brown. They are denied access to clean water and are not allowed to accept bottled water brought in by family members. This is horrific and a serious human rights concern.”

Flores remarked on the nutrition situation. “Raul has lost over 30 pounds, Edwin 40 pounds. Their diets lack proper nutrition. No fruit, or vegetables. She asked Raul why some prisoners have regular visits to the prison nutritionist who prescribes fruit and vegetables to be added to their diet. He said, “they are gang members and they get special treatment … we only get a visit to the nutritionist if we are almost dead. It is terrible in here.”

As political prisoners have suffered in prison for almost 10 months and denied access to a due, fair legal process, the pressure mounts on the Honduran government to offer an amnesty to those arrested during and after the illegal, fraudulent election of Juan Orlando Hernandez in November, 2017. More Hondurans are joining the caravan exodus out of Honduras due to poor living conditions, lack of employment; they are denied free speech and are terrorized, murdered or incarcerated if they speak against government corruption.

We’re bringing change you can see to Barrie-SpringwaterOro-Medonte. A constituent called our office and brought our attention to a portion of sidewalk in Hillsdale that was in a state of utter disrepair. This constituent also presented us with a petition signed by nearly a quarter of the residents of this small community, which demonstrated just how important repairing this infrastructure was to the residents of the area. A significant portion of the sidewalk was reduced to a gravel path, which connected the two cracked and chipped remaining sidewalks.

This eyesore for the community was also a safety hazard.

It was incredibly inaccessible for seniors and people with disabilities, and unsafe for kids walking to and from school.

We took our constituent’s concern to heart and connected with the Ministry of Transportation on this issue. After working closely with the Ministry, the issue has now been resolved. The harsh step off of and on to the sidewalk has been replaced with a smoothly paved gradient. Now the community has a safe and smooth walkway that is accessible for everyone to use.

This is the kind of work we do at our constituency office every day. We are here to ensure constituent issues are heard and addressed. The Province Wants Your Ideas for a Made-in-Ontario Plan Toronto - Ontario's Government for the People is inviting the public and businesses to have their say on how Ontario can deal with environmental challenges such as climate change.

"We share an opportunity to work together to tackle the big environmental challenges that currently face our province and, indeed, the entire world," said Rod Phillips, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. "At the same time, Ontario has many resourceful and innovative individuals and businesses - we want to hear from you on how best to balance a healthy economy with a healthy environment."

The public can now comment on some key areas of focus for Ontario's new plan, which will replace the previous government's insistence on imposing a punishing, job-killing carbon tax on Ontario families and businesses, and instead focus on collaborative approaches that will actually help the environment.

In particular, the consultation will focus on resiliency efforts, pollution reduction and how government can better partner with the private sector on sustainable solutions.
