The Township of Tiny Hosts Its First Farm Crawl

(Tiny, Ontario) On September 22, 2018, the Township of Tiny hosted its first ever Farm Crawl. Over 45 ‘crawlers’ travelled to five different locations around the Township to explore agricultural practices within the community. With tickets sold for the low price of $35.00, including transportation and a hearty local meal served by Wendy B’s Fine Foods, spaces for the event filled up quickly. Stops along the way included guided tours of the Community Garden, Windlee Farms Sugar Bush, Dubeau Family Farm, Monpiero Farm, and Bulbs of Fire. Participants sampled delicious locally grown food, including maple products, local produce, sunflower oil, garlic and garlic treats, and much more. The event supported Tiny’s local farmers and provided attendees with an opportunity to shop for products directly from the farm. The Township of Tiny wishes to thank Windlee Farms Sugar Bush, Dubeau Family Farm, Monpiero Farm and Bulbs of Fire for sharing their passion for agriculture and opening their businesses and homes up to the community. The Township also thanks the many participants who made the event a great success. To learn more about the participating farms and Tiny’s Local Food Project, please visit www. tiny.ca/local-food-project. Elmvale Lions Club Speaker Series

The Elmvale Lions Club has kicked off a new initiative for it’s members this year. We have added monthly speakers for our 2nd meeting of the month and in the spirit of community we will be sharing summaries of these speeches on our Facebook page and in the Springwater News. This month (Tuesday September 25th) we tackled Social Media. Our Speaker was Chris McBrien who is a Professor at Georgian College and an award nominated Podcaster. He provided a very entertaining and informative talk that created lots of questions and discussion. Chris first started off defining Social Media vs Traditional Media. The main difference he explained that while traditional media only pushes content in 1 direction by a company, Social Media content is created and provided by the users and includes multi-directional communication. He started with the basics of how to open up accounts on various social media sites and then expanded into the different types of social media programs. There are many different social media outlets that are used for different purposes. Facebook is primarily used to waste time, Twitter is used for specific engagement with individuals or organizations, LinkedIn like a business version of Facebook, Instagram is used for sharing pictures and Youtube is used for sharing Videos. There are also many others including SnapChat etc. The discussion then moved into the best ways for organizations like to Lions Club to use social media to grow our followers, expand truck draw ticket promotion and create more interest in the Lions Club. Great information was provided on the impact of “Liking” a post vs “Sharing” a post vs “Commenting” on a post. Chris then expanded on the types of post our Lions Clubs should be producing, sharing and commenting on to grow engagement. He also provided some great insights into the time of day, and days of the week that receive the greatest amount of engagement. He concluded with 13 Suggestion to create more social media engagement which provide some great suggestions on how to effectively use social media. If you are interested in learning more about Social Media you can contact Chris McBrien at chris.McBrien@GeorgianCollege.ca. If you are interested in finding out more about your local Lions Club and attending one of our meetings contact our President Jerry at rebidoux@ sympatico.ca.
