Hosted by the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association (OMSPA), Maple Weekend is a fun, free, two-day, familyfriendly event that celebrates a new season of production and Ontario’s maple heritage at participating sugarbushes across the province.

Maple Weekend is the perfect time to get out and visit a sugarbush, with specials and activities celebrating the production of Canada’s first farm crop of the season. Visitors during this two-day event can expect to experience the best of the traditional maple syrup experiences, ranging from pancake breakfasts and sugar making demonstrations to taffy on snow, sleigh rides, trail adventures and more.

Maple Weekend is a celebration of the Canadian tradition of maple syrup production, and features two full days of activities in specials at participating maple syrup producers across the province. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, visitors can expect to enjoy tasting a new crop of maple syrup and getting an inside look on how this sweet liquid gold is produced.

Editor’s Musings If we had private beer & liquor stores, would prices be higher? I saw the headline on the internet but one has to pay to read it so ‘NOT ME’ paying.

In comparison to other things, I would say it would be cheaper if the government did not operate as the middle man. If craft brewers could deliver their product directly to the store, instead of the government being the middle man - the stores could pay the applicable tax to the Government therefore eliminating a whole bureaucracy, money would be saved.

People are fighting to get rid of chicken, egg and milk marketing boards because they say it would reduce the price of these commodities.

In many of the municipalities, the governments are contracting the work out to private companies because it is cheaper.

Wasaga Beach is talking about replacing the Wasaga Stars Arena on the Elmvale side of the beach on Hwy 92.

One of the sites is at the Klondike Sports Park at Lyons Court and Ramblewood.

I quote - the design phases for both projects (the arena and a library at another site) are part of the 2019 budget: the arena design is anticipated to cost $1.8 million whole the library design will be $1 million.”

After all, this isn’t the first arena or library to be built in Ontario and Canada.

This network is going to be much faster and much more powerful than the current network…

5G is going to be fast as hell. With the additional bandwidth it provides, estimates put its peak speed at 20 times faster than the 4G networks we’re chugging along on right now—and 4G isn’t even that slow. So speed is the obvious benefit.

“We have a lot of millennials and folks who’ve never had a landline, and so 5G’s so powerful that you might be able to not even have a cable internet service, if you don’t want to,” Murray says. “If you’re running Hulu and a bunch of other apps, you could just do it directly from whatever mobile device you’re using.”

But in order for the 5G network to function properly, the towers must be much, much closer together than our current 4G towers. So over the coming years the big cell phone companies are going to put up hundreds of thousands of little towers all over the country, and when they are done there will literally be one on just about every single street corner in heavily populated areas.

If you live in a major city, the truth is that there won’t be anywhere you will be able to go to escape the radiation.

A couple of weeks ago, I was at the Airport to pick up my wife. Instead of going to the cell phone parking lot, I have found another place to park just short of Terminal 1. When Margaret Ann calls, I can be there in less than a minute. In fact, if I knew the area better, she could walk right out of the terminal to where I am sitting - maybe.

Effective April 1, gasoline will increase by 5 cents a litre (plus HST). If you drive 20,000 kms a year and get maybe 10 L per 100 km, that means you need 2000 lites a year to get around. At an extra 5 cents, it will cost you an extra $100 (plus HST) to drive around in the next year.

That cost rises to 7.5 cents in 2010, 10 cents in 2021 and 12.5 cents in 2022 for a total of $700 plus HST = almost another $100 or $800 which you don’t get to spend at our local stores. In a town like Elmvale which might have 1000 homes, in gasoline alone, that’s a million dollars that will not get spent locally.

If you use natural gas to heat your home, there will be an additional 4.4 cents per cubic meter then rising to 6.6 cents in 2020, 8.8 in 2021 and 11.1 in 2022.

I used 369 cu meters of Natural gas from Jan 30 to Feb 27 so for just one month, my gas goes up $16,24 (plus HST).

If we extrapolate that for four years, that’s another million dollars that will not be spent in local stores.

Every store we go into will increase their prices to cover the cost so expect there to be more $$$ not spent locally, just money rolling into the government coffers (plus HST).

The government says it will be revenue neutral (with the exception of the HST). Who believes that?

Rural Intentions – a word from Craighurst by Lynette Mader The Ives of March brought a road wash-out along our little stretch Highway 93. I was just heading down the lane to assess whether I could build a bridge across the gully, when a Simcoe County truck pulled up. It was 7:30am and I was impressed.

“How’d you get

here so fast?” I asked.

“I live two doors up,” came the response.

“We met a couple of years ago.”

Indeed, Dave and I had knocked on the door to say “howdy” do and “welcome to the neighbourhood” but in the typical way of busy working people, we hadn’t bumped into each other since. None the less, I felt like a bit foolish. So here’s a shout out to the awesome and friendly customer service from the Simcoe County Roads guys (and especially my neighbour) who had a front end loader and a dump truck with gravel there in no time at all.

I was able to get to work by 9:30am – amazing.

As I drove to work, I saw other county trucks out dealing with many other road wash-outs: a busy day for them. Included here is a photo of the washout: first we’ve seen in our 17 years here.

A bit of local cultural news: an amazing young musical group called Midnight in April has a number of songs available in main stream media.

One of the trio is the granddaughter of our own Marianna Gilbert-Cook. Check out the haunting melodies and flawless harmonies from these incredible young ladies on ITunes or Spotify. Also

Some big news if you’re a fan of Benjamin Moore paint (and many home decorators are), Dave and I just discovered that the Elmvale Home Hardware carries this line. So the paint elitists no longer need to drive into Barrie to get the very best. We bought the Beauti-Tone line ourselves and are thoroughly pleased with the results: it went on flawlessly and covered our tired blue walls in one coat.

A movie called Five Feet Apart is now playing in Barrie and it’s all about a young couple with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). This is a big deal in the CF community so please check it out in support of creating greater awareness of this incurable and ultimately fatal condition of the lungs and digestive system. Dave and I haven’t seen it yet because CF patients aren’t technically supposed to share the same space – hence the title of the movie.

“Just give a loud cough and you’ll clear the aisles five feet around you,” I suggested, p e r h a p s unhelpfully.

I must emphasize that this is a cautionary policy only for people with Cystic Fibrosis. We’ll go see the move at some point and maybe surround Dave with our friends and neighbours.

Lastly, I’d like to give a shout-out to the Purveyors who gave yet another outstanding performance at The Redline Brewery on March 16. The lead singer of the Purveyors is Dave Hatfield whose famous brother went to space but more importantly, their soundman Andrew Strauss is Dave’s cousin. The band members are local and their performances always fill the house. Included here is a photo of the band.

Award winning Skilled Trades Expo now seeking exhibitors

Midhurst/March 8, 2019 – Economic development partners from across Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka are calling on local businesses, organizations and entrepreneurs working in the skilled trades to participate as exhibitors in the 4th annual Simcoe Muskoka Skilled Trades Expo being held Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Elmvale Community Arena.

The Simcoe Muskoka Skilled Trades Expo is a provincial, national and international award winning event that provides students in Grades 7 and 8 with hands-on demonstrations and interactive displays relating to dozens of skilled trades career opportunities in Simcoe County and Muskoka.

The 2019 event will feature two sessions: a student only session from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. and a session geared for the general public, high school students and job seekers from 4 to 7 p.m. The event serves as an opportunity for trades people to showcase their businesses and sector to the public. The 2018 Expo helped introduce 2,600 students to more than 35 skilled trades and welcomed more than 200 residents to the job fair.

EDHS students will also be visiting Saskatchewan to support! Oro-based Molded Precision Components filled Barrie’s Five Points Theatre to capacity on Saturday Evening, to celebrate their journey so far and to officially launch their new corporate identity. Gossip is hurtful. Regardless of the age or stage of life, and whether it is in the family, school, office or neighborhood, gossip pollutes the social and emotional environment. No good can possibly come from speaking negatively about another person. There can be no trust where gossip abounds.

Gossip generally involves criticizing another for behaving in ways we do not like. This presumes we know best: that our way is the right way. Even if a person did something wrong, running out and telling five more people hardly solves the problem. There is a difference between confiding in someone you trust when there are difficulties, and tattling, on someone.

If you are confiding because you are upset, you can do this with the tacit understanding that the conversation will not be repeated. You can also keep the focus on resolving the issue, rather than doing a character assassination.

The path with the highest integrity is the one where we work out the issue with the one who has hurt or upset us.

We make our peace and move on.

If the other is not interested in peaceful resolution, then it is best to leave it at that and move on. To keep stirring the pot, attempting to turn others against the adversary, sets up a process of both inner and outer turmoil. It is best to shift your focus on the other things, so that you restore a positive energy state within your own being. That will serve the highest good of all.

Just to give you some idea of the size of Holland and the miracle they have created, it is 42,500 square kilometers.

Comparing, Canada is 10,000,000 sq km, Ontario is 1.1 million, Nova Scotia 55.3 thousand, New Brunswick 72.9 thousand and Southern Ontario 139.9 thousand sq km. Holland is a fraction of all of our major production lands and I haven’t mentioned the west and Quebec. Do you honestly think that with our land and with a plan we couldn’t match and exceed what the Dutch have done?

They have shown us the way and are shining a light.

Being self-sufficient would mean we could not be leveraged or threatened by other countries to, say reduce food exports to Canada unless we cough up more water.

We learned about threats, false statements and intimidation from the NAFTA negotiations last year, and I for one don’t want to be blackmailed in the future.

If we also make serious efforts to completely protect our water, we will be able to not only meet our own needs but to provide water, and expertise in well drilling or other ways of extracting water, to truly needy countries.

To be independent from most other sources of food would give us flexibility. And having marvelous water resources would give us leverage.

While this sounds altruistic it is quite possible with commitment, forward thinking and having a plan for the future that embraces all parties. We have been really careless because our resources have been abundant and we have developed sloppy habits harmful to the earth that we have the responsibility to steward. This is now a new time with an exploding world population, and exploding science, and opportunities abound. We just need to seize them, and by so doing, we protect our country and help others.

I ask you to please not spoil our local water, and all that it means in the future, for a few marginal jobs in a gravel pit.

That is a poor decision, and not one to hang the resume on.

We are a nation blessed in resources. Let us not continue to disregard their importance and waste them frivolously. I thank you for reading and hope you elect to protect Canada’s water, starting with saying no to the Teeden Pit request to expand and discard 6 million liters of water each day.

West dutifully leads his partner’s Heart suit and the Jack is taken by Declarer’s Ace (holding up won’t achieve anything). The ♣K comes next and East wins his Ace. At this point East can count (at least) eight tricks for Declarer, namely two Spades (because surely Declarer has the Ace), one Heart, one Diamond and four Clubs. East can also deduce that Declarer started with ♥AT9x, because West’s opening lead from ♥Tx would be the Ten and from ♥Txx would be a low one. That being the case, it’s clear that persisting with Hearts will merely serve to set up Declarer’s game-going trick. A Diamond is no better, of course, so East does the best he can by exiting safely with a Club. A nice try, but it just delays the inevitable.

On the run of the Clubs Declarer pitches two Spades and a Diamond, and then cashes the ♠K followed by the ♠A. With East known to have the missing Heart honors and nothing left but red cards, he is a sitting duck for an end-play.

Declarer simply exits with the ♥T and sits back smugly while East chooses whether to surrender the 9th trick in Hearts or in Diamonds.

Easter FUNdraiser

The Elmvale Co-operative Nursery School celebrates Easter in a BIG way. Entering its’ 5th year, the Nursery School is gearing up for their best Easter ‘FUNdraiser’ to date. Formerly named the Annual Egg Hunt, this year’s roster is all about Easter FUN. Featuring live bunnies and of course sweet chocolate treats all included in the admission price. Attendees can enjoy the thrill of the hunt, while supporting a great cause.

The event will be held Saturday April 20th at Heritage Park rain or shine, from 10 am-12 noon, and will not disappoint. BARRIE, ON — The Ontario government is putting people first by seeking local input on how to improve governance, decision-making and service delivery for regional governments and member municipalities.

All people who live or work in Barrie – Springwater – Oro-Medonte are invited to share their thoughts through the online consultation. The deadline to submit comments is April 23rd, 2019.

“We promised the people of Ontario that all levels of government would work harder, smarter and more efficiently,” said Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Our government is putting people first by seeking local input on how to improve governance, decision-making and service delivery for regional governments and their member municipalities.”

In addition to meeting with municipalities and stakeholder groups, Special Advisors Michael Fenn and Ken Seiling will assess the feedback received through the online consultation. They will provide their advice and recommendations to Minister Clark this summer.

“Ontario’s system of regional government has been in place for almost 50 years. A Plan Focused on Long-Term Student Sustainability and Achievement while Respecting and Supporting our Educators and Families with a Modernized Education System Central Ontario— March 17, 2019 — Students and parents in Ontario can look forward to stronger math, STEM, and financial literacy curricula, a province-wide ban on cellphones in the classroom and improved skilled trades opportunities, as part of the Government of Ontario's new vision for ‘Education that Works for You.’ "The previous government left us an outdated system that did not prepare our students for the realities of today," said MPP for Barrie – Springwater – OroMedonte, Doug Downey. "We are going to be investing in education and students in a way that is focused on student achievement and well-being."

The government's plan, Education that Works for You, will modernize the province’s classrooms and curriculum, and ensure a sustainable world-class education system for the students of today and the future.

“Our government held the largest public consultation on education in Ontario’s history,” said York-Simcoe MPP Caroline Mulroney. “This new vision on education will bring Ontario’s classrooms into the new century and prepare our students with greater learning and skilled trades opportunities.”

The consultation included more than 72,000 engagements across three different consultation channels, which included an open submission form, online survey and telephone town halls held in every region of the province.

“Our goal is to make sure students are prepared for the future. We need to provide them the tools they need to launch careers, pay bills and start families right here in Ontario. These changes will help them succeed,” said Barrie-Innisfil MPP, Andrea Khanjin.

The plan would include:  Modernizing classrooms by expanding broadband, developing a new policy that will ban the use of cellphones during class except for educational purposes and modernizing the approach to assessment and evaluation with a renewed focus on equity across the province.  Introducing changes to education funding that keep resources focused on students in the classroom.  Supporting teacher mobility and bringing greater transparency, fairness, consistency and accountability to Branch. As a boy growing up in Orillia, Hill earned pocket change scooping up discarded beer bottles around the Festival. Later, he was inspired to try his hand at folk by the musicians he saw when the festival was at the Toronto Islands. When it returned to its Orillia birthplace in 2000, he jumped at the chance to volunteer, climbing the ranks to serve as Artistic Director from 2006 to 2017.

Hill is keeping his hand in through sitting on the Festival Board of Directors, but he's turned his years of insider insight into a book covering the Festival's extensive history and the colourful parade of artists its hosted. He features the lean and lush years, revealing his interactions with performers ranging from Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen to Buffy Ste. Marie and Jann Arden and the Festival's sometimes-rocky relationship with Orillia.

We are also undertaking curriculum reform that will

include:  A new math curriculum that will focus on math fundamentals for all grades;  A renewed focus on STEM, skilled trades and financial literacy; and  A modern and age-appropriate Health and Physical Education curriculum that will keep students safe.

There will be clear provisions for parents who wish to exempt their child or children from sexual health education.

Online modules will be available for parents who want to discuss sexual health topics at home whenever they feel their child is ready.

The government is committed to discussing the key elements of the proposed plan, including hiring practices and class sizes, through a consultation process that allows partners to provide the benefit of their expertise, experience and ideas.

Ontario Continues to Support Students with Autism The Ontario government is working for the people by setting students up for success as they transition into school. We're increasing supports for educators and building on existing programs, so school boards will be prepared to help ensure students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) feel safe and supported in their classrooms.

Through Enhancing Education Support: A Plan for Students with Autism, the government will: • Promote professional learning by fully subsidizing an ASD-specific Additional Qualification course for teachers; • Double funding to the Geneva Centre for Autism to provide online training opportunities for educators; • Fund behavior expertise and student supports by continuing special education funding, including components responsive to enrollment of students with high needs; • Expand after-school skills development programs for students on the Autism spectrum by providing funding to all 72 school boards; • Support students transitioning into school through the Connections for Students model with autism service providers, educators and families; and • Fund school boards for each new student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) entering the school system in the remaining months of the 201819 school year with an average of $12,300 to make sure there are proper supports available during the transition from therapy to school.

"Student success is our number one priority. We're putting people first by ensuring both students and educators receive the support they need to succeed," said Lisa Thompson, Minister of Education. "The existing supports in place to assist students with autism are tremendous.

What we're doing today is building on those supports and making sure we fill any gaps when it comes to promoting professional development."

It’s official, Spring has arrived and the warm weather last weekend along with the rain created some interesting new and unwanted ponds at a number of homes Friday morning. Fortunately the weather has moderated and the melt won’t be as quick and we can look forward to seeing the snow and ice disappear.

Did you ever wonder how our community received the name Anten Mills? At one time the property where homes in the village are located, towering pines, spruce and larch trees once stood. In fact this area was part of the post – glacier waters of Lake Algonquin. Timber was harvested and soon the area was a wasteland of blow sand and tree stumps.

Our Anten Mill Facebook page is usually full of posts of interest. Whether it’s for someone looking for a local tradesmen or celebrating a family celebration, it’s a great place to share information. Unfortunately this past week a post shared the sad news that long time resident, Warren Lillie passed away at the young age of 68. Warren and his wife Wendy raised their three children here and were very active in our community and its events. On behalf of the entire Anten Mills community we offer our most sincere condolences to Wendy, Adrienne, Christopher, Meghan and their families. Warren was a great father, grandfather and friend to many and he will be sadly missed. Should you wish to remember Warren, the family is requesting memorial donations be made to Youth Haven in Barrie @ youthhaven.ca With Spring here, Easter will be along in a month and on Saturday April 20, the Anten Mills Community Recreation Association announce that the Easter Eggstravaganza will again be held at the Community Centre. New this year is the first annual 1K Rabbit Run, commencing at 9:30 am at the hall. Egg hunt and activities will follow from 10:00 am to noon. Organizers are excited to be welcoming back Mabel Moon, face painter extraordinaire and Gary Austin, balloon twister and magician. Entry for the Rabbit Run will be $2 per child and all other Easter activities are free, but food bank donations are greatly appreciated.

No registration is required for this event. Sponsors and financial assistance is always appreciated and for further information check out the Anten Mills Facebook page.

If you are interested in the Community Recreation Association, they will be meeting tonight at the Community Centre starting at 7:30. Everyone is welcome to attend.

As for how our community was named, it comes from the surnames of two timber men who ran a sawmill here from 1840 to 1876 by the names of Anderson and Tennant.

Victoria Harbour and District Lions Club Donates to Wendat Seniors’ Residence

The Victoria Harbour and District Lions Club has generously donated $500.00 to the Wendat Senior’s Residence. The Club has donated $1,000 in the last two years towards the final construction costs of the Lorna

The Residence in Penetanguishene is designed to accommodate 23 frail seniors of low income, with priority given to those over the age of 75. Each resident has their own bedroom designed for mobility and comfort. There are two double rooms to accommodate couples, plus plenty of lounge spaces for socializing and structured activities.

All meals are provided in a central dining room. The cost is around $1,000 per month and Seniors must qualify for low income independent living.

“We are very grateful to the Victoria Harbour Lions Club for their generous support,” said Andrea Abbott-Kokosin, Executive Director of Wendat. “There are many, many seniors in this area in need of affordable housing with the kind of supports we offer.”

The aim of the Wendat Seniors’ Residence is to have a positive impact on the wellness, independence and quality of life for at risk older adults so they are able to live longer, in better health and in a supported, caring environment.

Ontario Making Life Easier for Anglers and Hunters

TORONTO — Today, John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, visited the Toronto Sportsmen's Show to showcase how Ontario's Government for the People is making life easier for anglers and hunters.

"Our government is working hard to make it easier for families, anglers and hunters to get out on the water and enjoy the great outdoors," said Yakabuski. "We will continue to focus on customer service, reduce barriers to our world-class natural resources, and look for ways to help people make ends meet."

Here are some of the ways the government is putting people first: • Froze fishing and hunting licence fees and removed the $2 service fee • Doubled the number of free fishing events in 2019 • Showed appreciation for veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members residing in Ontario by allowing them to fish for free across the province • Improved customer service by launching a new Fish and Wildlife Licensing Service • Initiated a review of the moose management program to address how tag quotas are developed, how hunters apply for tags and to examine the current allocation process • Invested $1.1 million in the Ontario Fur Managers Federation to support trapping education program and licence services for Ontario's trappers and trapping instructors.

Some Early Crossland School notes, part 1

As settlers moved west in Flos township and settled upon land still to be cleared, a priority was to obtain the basic needs of a community: churches, schools and a post office. Of these, schools were a major concern. The newly settled area would be part of an existing school section but often with a school too distant for regular attendance. Even if the children were often unable to attend, taxes for the school (at that time levied for each school section at rates set for that section) still had to be paid. The solution, as soon as there were enough settlers in the new area, was to petition the council to establish a new school section and to build a new school in the new settlement.

The Flos school sections were generally established from east to west, just as settlement was generally from east to west, and the section number in the earlier years generally reflected the progress of settlement. Therefore the first three sections were No. 1 (Craighurst), No. 2 (Rowat’s on the Old Second) and No. 3 (Waverley), serving the early settlements along the Penetanguishene Road, and at first these three section did not have any western boundaries.

The sections which followed tended to reflect how settlement proceeded: No. 4 (Apto), No. 5 (Elmvale), No. 6 (Phelpston ), No. 7 (Allenwood), No. 8 (Victoria School ), No. 9 (Vigo), No. 10 (Crossland) No. 11 (New Flos), No. 12 (Vanvlack), No. 13 (Saurin), No. 14 (Anten Mills), No. 15 (Usher’s) and No. 16 (Edenvale).

The Crossland school section was established by Flos bylaw 118, passed by the council under Reeve John McAvoy in December, 1871, but the decision had been made a little earlier. The boundaries were established as all of the lots west of lot 11, concession 6 (previously in Section No. 8) and all lots west of lot 12, concession 6 and the south halves of lot 12 in the 8th concession (previously in Section No. 6). Matthew Lawson was appointed to chair the first meeting of the ratepayers in the new section.

Unfortunately the minutes for the first meeting have not been found, although the minutes of the meetings from 1873 until 1946, when the local management of trustees was given up in favour of a township school board (to which Crossland elected two trustees) all survive.

For all of those years, an annual ratepayer’s meeting was held each year, generally between Christmas and New Years day, at which the accounts were reviewed and trustees and auditors elected. There were three trustees, serving staggered terms of three years each, requiring one trustee to be elected (or re-elected) each year. Occasionally a further trustee would have to be elected to fill the place of someone who resigned or died.

There were two auditors in each year, one elected by the ratepayers and the other appointed by the trustees.

Because the records for the first year have not been found, we do not know who built the first school or what the cost was. Possibly it was a community effort, but the figure of $185 was mentioned in 1873 and this might have been the cost of the school. The location was just north of the Crossland corner in lot 15, concession 7, a quarter acre lot which the trustees obtained by donation from Bernard Kelly in September, 1871. Kelly had only purchased the farm from the crown in 1867. He lived on the lot and had about five acres cleared by 1871, although the pine had been sold to H.H. Cook of Midland. At the same time as he transferred the school lands Kelly sold the balance of the farm to Robert Crossland and moved to the north half of lot 15, concession 4, where he farmed many years. The donation might have actually been on behalf of Crossland. The deed contained a clause that, should the site not be used as a school for a period of a year, the land was to revert to the owner of the adjoining farm, but the Simcoe County School Board ignored this when they eventually sold the school in 1968. The original lot purchase was for a quarter acre, scarcely adequate for a playing field. The lot was enlarged in 1885 to the north and to the east by purchase from Robert Crossland of a further 3/4 acre, making the lot 201 feet by 217.5 feet, but for some reason this second deed was never registered.

The school was probably built in the Spring of 1872.

There is no photograph, but we do have a description of it. It was a cedar log building, 18 feet by 22 feet, with a ceiling only 8 feet high. It seems not to have had any covering over the logs, inside or out, but was “well

by Hisorian Gary French french@bellnet.ca floored and ceiled” and may well have been whitewashed inside.

There were two windows on each side and a single door at the front.

It must have been dark inside, especially in the winter. It was initially sparsely furnished with a stove, a desk for the teacher, a blackboard and seven desks with benches. These desks were about five feet long and usually accommodated three pupils, No doubt they were built by a local carpenter. There must have been a school bell then, as later records refer to replacing the rope and no entry for purchase of the bell is found. The inspector was initially satisfied with the building, but noted that it was small. On the other hand, he reported that the attendance was very poor (on one visit, he found only seven students present out of a roll of 41). By late in the 1870s the inspector was already reporting that the building was in poor condition and wind was coming through the cracks. There had been some improvements. Matthew Lawson was paid for a privy in 1873 and in that year, Alfred Bauldry was paid for making a blackboard and Noah Cotton for making two desks. William Fox was paid $6.00 to dig a well. This well was filled in by James Strath in 1898 at a cost of $5.50 and the newer well dug (or perhaps just repaired) ,cleaned and bricked by J.H. Wellwood in 1897. As all of this occurred in 1873, one wonders how long the school had been opened in 1872. An arm chair was purchased for $1.75 in 1877 (probably for the teacher) and Noah Cotton provided more seats in 1879. A clock was purchased from Thomas Lawrence of Collingwood in 1880 and in the same year two more desks and a blackboard were obtained locally. In 1884 a pump was purchased from Joseph Cooper for $12 and a stove from Bingham (of Barrie ?) for $11.

The trustees recognized that, although the school was less than ten years old, it needed to be replaced and, beginning in 1880, they began to levy further taxes to put money aside to replace it. They raised $100 in 1880 and $200 in 1881 and second school was built in 1882 and opened in March of 1883. It is not clear what became of the old school. The contractor for the second school was James Paterson of Elmvale and the cost was $500.00 (James Paterson’s parents had been among the first settlers in Elmvale and their house still stands at 9 Bertram Drive). A porch was added, probably in 1884.

Matthew Lawson Jr. was paid $100.00 in 1886 for fencing and building privies (these privies, or a later version, was replaced in 1925 with a combined woodshed and water closet) and a further $4.50 a year later for a belfry. This school served the section until it burned and was replaced in 1956. At the time, there was considerable discussion about the desks to be supplied and the trustees visited the Allenwood school (which had homemade desks) and the Minesing school (which had factory made desks - probably the style with cast iron frames and wooden seats and desk tops, familiar to all who ever attended a one-room school). The decision was to accept homemade desks and Paterson offered to make 35 or 36 desks at a dollar each and a teacher’s desk for five dollars, with three coats of paint. In the end, the desks seem to have been made by William Lillicoe of Elmvale (he lived in the house on the old Hub Motel property, since demolished).

These desks were soon found to be unsatisfactory and were replaced by factory made desks in 1900 at a cost of $120.52, a further $4 to bring the seats from the Elmvale train station and 90 cents for screws to attach the seats to the floor. The school was a wooden frame building and the exterior finish would have been wood siding or stucco. In 1897 a decision was made to have the school bricked and re-shingled, but this did not occur until 1904, at a cost of $406. Some work on the foundation had been required in 1900 to prepare for this. Lightning rods were added to the school in 1927.

Maintenance of the well pump was a common expense and the pump seems to have required frequent replacement. Joseph Cooper was paid $12 in 1884 and Phillips $12.50 in 1896, apparently for new pumps, and James Dow, the blacksmith at Crossland, was often called upon to repair the pump and other fixtures in the school.

The rest of the school’s water supply equipment consisted simply of a pail (in the early days a wooden pail) and tin cups, frequently replaced.

In mid-2018, Desjardins Insurance learned of allegations of fraudulent activity by Mr. Sherif Aly, an Ontario resident not licensed to sell auto insurance. Desjardins Insurance reached out to Aviva Canada to collaborate on a groundbreaking joint investigation into this activity.

Coincidentally, in October of 2018, another investigation was launched separately by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). This investigation was triggered when they pulled over a driver in Port Credit for an unrelated traffic offense and determined that this driver’s insurance policy was invalid, and his pink slips were fraudulent. Therefore, we need to clarify our desired outcomes from this process, and focus our energies on two or three priority issues among the dozen that we feel are important. By doing so, we are more likely to negotiate agreements that are meaningful to us, and less likely to get sidetracked with tangential or petty issues.

What are the needs that are most important to be

negotiated at this time?

If we are unable or unwilling to negotiate a meaningful agreement, what are my alternatives?

How might these relate to the situation facing the other person(s) involved in this dispute? (Would their analysis be similar or different)?

When it really comes down to it, what do I want to happen as a result of this process?

2) We will make a sincere commitment to listen to one another, to try to understand the other person’s point of view before responding.

3) What we discuss together will be kept in confidence, unless there is explicit agreement regarding who needs to know further information.

4) We agree to talk directly with the person with whom there are concerns, and not seek to involve others in “gossip” or “alliance building.”

5) We agree to try our hardest and trust that others are doing the same within the group.

6) We will support the expression of dissent in a harassment free workplace.

School Bus Involved Minor Crash in Tay Township (TAY TOWNSHIP, ON) - Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded at 9:20 am March 18, 2019 to a report of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Jephson Street and Albert Street in Tay Township. The involved vehicles were a school bus with 44 passengers aboard and a passenger van, no occupants of either vehicle sustained injuries in the crash which caused a temporary road closure while the bus was removed from the scene. The driver of the school bus was charged with a Highway Traffic Act offence following the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Drug Investigation Leads to Multiple Arrests (ORILLIA, ON) - On Thursday March 14, 2019 at approximately 11:55 a.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested six suspects in relation to a drug investigation at a Memorial Avenue hotel.

Warden’s Ski Day Gives a Lift to Newly Launched Long-Term Care Bus Fundraising Campaign Midhurst/March 6, 2019 – County of Simcoe Warden George Cornell hosted the Warden’s Ski Day on March 5, 2019 to raise important funds for the County’s LongTerm Care and Seniors’ Services programs.

The fundraising event was presented by Frank Cowan Company, and participants enjoyed a beautiful day on the slopes at Mount St. Louis Moonstone, helping raise more than $8,000 to support the newly launched Give a Lift Long-Term Care Bus Fundraising Campaign.

“It was a great day on the slopes and a special thank you to all our sponsors and skiers for helping us bring back the Warden’s Ski Day and for supporting our new Give a Lift Long-Term Care Bus Fundraising Campaign,” said Warden George Cornell. “Our long-term care buses are vital to our programming and the quality of life of our residents, and we look forward to working with our partners towards raising the funds required to replace these vehicles.”

Each of the County’s four Long-Term Care homes have an accessible bus that keeps residents and clients connected to their communities, supports programming and allows residents to participate in events, activities and outings.

The buses serve more than 3,800 riders annually, attending more than 32 outings combined each month. The County is currently in need of four replacement buses to ensure residents living in long-term care remain connected and engaged in their communities.

Carbon Tax Will Kill Jobs and Increase Price of Gas, Home Heating and Other Products

CAMBRIDGE — Ontario's government will stand up for the people of Ontario by fighting the carbon tax with every tool and power at its disposal, Premier Doug Ford and Rod Phillips, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, announced today.

The federal government has passed a law that will force low- and middle-income seniors, workers, families and small businesses to start paying a rapidly-escalating carbon tax, starting on April 1, 2019.

Ford and Phillips highlighted how the federal carbon tax could affect the transportation sector in particular. Close to three quarters of a billion dollars will be taken out of the long-haul trucking sector as a result of the carbon tax over the 20192022 period. For a long-haul truck consuming 88,000 litres of fuel each year, this translates into more than $3,500 in operating costs in 2019 and approximately $11,200 by 2022.

The province has released for consultation a new Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan tailored to the province's specific priorities and regional challenges and opportunities while striking the right balance between a healthy environment and a healthy economy.

Quick Facts • The federal government’s output-based pricing system applies to industrial emissions that occur starting on January 1, 2019.

• Beginning on April 1, 2019, the federal government will apply a fuel charge to fossil fuels in Ontario, resulting in an estimated increase of five cents per litre for gasoline including the additional HST cost. This will rise to 7.5 cents in 2020, 10 cents in 2021 and 12.5 cents per litre in April 2022.

• Including the additional HST cost, the federal carbon tax will increase the price of natural gas in Ontario by 4.4 cents per cubic metre. This increase will rise to 6.6 cents in 2020, 8.8 cents in 2021 and 11.1 cents per cubic metre in April 2022. The costs of aviation fuel and propane will also significantly increase.

• The price of diesel will add 5.37 cents per litre in 2019, rising to 13.41 cents by 2022.

• The federal carbon tax, with HST, will add over $350 million to the cost of heavy duty transportation in Ontario in the next year alone. By 2022, that figure could be as high as $870 million.

• Ontario is challenging the federal government’s Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, an unconstitutional, disguised tax, in court.

The hockey season is winding down for the Elmvale Coyote’s IP 1 and 2 teams and what a great season it has been! This group of 5 and 6 year olds has worked tirelessly all season improving their skating, stopping, shooting and passing and each player has improved immensely. Our Elmvale Coyote howl could be heard far and wide when both teams participated in the Hanover Jamboree on March 3rd. We played 3 games of hockey, had a fun filled day and representing Elmvale well. * There is nothing evil about bottled water. Sometimes it is just more convenient to buy a bottle of water than spend time looking for a water fountain. But do you really have to buy two or three brand new individual bottles a day? Whenever I buy a bottle of water I try to save the bottle, if it is convenient, and re-fill it with tap water. I almost always have a few bottles of ice cold water in my fridge that I haven't paid a cent for, and it's just as easy to bring one with me in the car in the morning or to the gym at night as it is to buy a bottle while I'm out. * Don't want to bother with a screwdriver to install a faucet mounted filter? You can buy a pitcher-type water filter for as little as $25. It will not filter quite as well as a faucet mounted filter but your water will probably just as clean as what you will get from bottled water * Tap water tastes funny to you? Install a water filter on your sink at home. A faucet mounted water filter can be as cheap as $40 and will remove 96-99 percent of chlorine, 9299 percent of lead, and between 95-99 percent of at least a half dozen other chemicals and impurities from your tap water. And you will be paying pennies for a bottle versus a dollarfifty or two dollars at the store!

How is the Chinese New Year calculated?

Chinese New Year, which is really the Spring Festival in China, is based on the lunar/solar calendar, rather than our Western (Gregorian) calendar. The date of the holiday varies from late January to mid-February. The Spring Festival is the oldest and most important festival in China, celebrating the start of plowing and sowing, and the return of life to the earth. Feudal rulers of the ancient dynasties gave great ceremonies to usher in this season. These days, families prepare during the last days of the year by cleaning their houses, paying off debts,

My passion for the night sky began at the tender age of 8 with an elementary school library book entitled “Stars”. I leaned from that faithful day that the Sun is a typical star in the night sky and one of 200 billion stars of our Milky Way Galaxy. But not all stars are the same. They come in an array of different sizes, ages, colours, temperatues, distances as well as a combination of chemical elements. But how diid our Sun come to be?

Some 5 billion years ago the Sun developed from a shell of gas and dust in an interstellar cloud measuring hundreds of light years across. A light year is about ten trillion kilometres in length. Most likely the shockwave of a nearby explosing star called a supernova sent pockets of material into a spinning motion.

Over time these pockets began to condense and collapse upon itself, with this spinning motion drawing material towards its centre like a giant cosmic blender.

The spinning also caused the cloud to flatten out and widen like pizza dough. Our protostar at the centre began getting hotter and larger with gravity pulling in more gas. This “snowball effect” continued until our Sun grew to its present size of 1.4 million kilometres across or 109 earths lined up side by side like a string of pearls.

There were most likely other sibling stars born from that same interstellar cloud so long ago.

Once the Sun reached a critical internal temperature of 15 million degrees Celcius, it lit up by nuclear fusion and the shock wave blew away some of the closer material outwards into the pancake of dust. Over time dust grains began sticking together to produce sand size particles. As more material stuck together and grew like sticking bits of Play-Doh together, about 100 baby planets called planetesimals came to be. Buzzing in all directions like a cosmic demolition derby, collisons resulted in utter destruction of the two bodies or the soft merger to create new larger worlds. When all was said and done the solar systen was now a family of eight main planets, hundreds of moons, tens of thousands of asteroids and billions of comets.

We refer the Sun as our daytime star and we orbit it at an average distance 150 million kilometres or one astronomical unit (AU). An AU is used as a cosmic metre stick when measuring celestial objects close to their parent stars. This is a mere baby step compared to our closest night time star called Proxima Centarui at 4.3 light years (ly) away. This star is located in the southern hemisphere and not seen from Canada. We do however see the bright star Sirius at 8.6 ly from us. Our Sun is considered a little less than average size compared to the rest of the galaxy.

Some super massive stars measure 30 or more times the size of the Sun and reside hundreds to thousands of light years away. End to end our Milky Way Galaxy measures 100,000 light years across.

We own our very existance to the creation of the Sun and planets. The Earth has created some 4.5 billion years ago with simple cell organisms emerging a few million years later. About 3.8 billion yers ago, cyanobacteria began forming mostly on stromatolites thus beginning the process of photosynthesis that produced oxygen.

The Sun is not only a heat and light source but grows our our food and helps our skin produce vitamin D which is good for our health. Earth is perfectly positioned in the habitable or “Goldie Locks Zone” where oceans remaid liquid with water is the key to life. If our planet was closer or farther from the Sun, water would boil away or freeze. So life is a result of the coming together of so many factors.

To date more than 4,000 exoplanets have been found orbitting distance stars with a few thousand more possible candidates. A few exoplanets are believed to lie in habitable zone so if that planet has water, life might also be possible. The same 92 natural elements found on the periodic table are found throughout the entire universe with the recipe of life in the making.

Next time you look up at the night sky, you might be gazing upon distant solar systems with a planet and the possibility of life.

Sports with Patrick Townes As you read this, think of baseball, and say the first five things that come to mind? One constant and guaranteed thing in sports today, is change.

Chances are, one of the five things you thought of when thinking about baseball was “umpire” or some phrase associated with an umpire. I have heard a few phrases from my father over the years. Who ever thought that one day baseball would be umpired by robots – it is sad to say, but that day is approaching. An umpire may cease to exist as we know it.

A new system is in place for experimental purposes called TrackMan to help umpires with balls and strikes during the upcoming season. If ever implemented fulltime, this will be a sad day for true baseball fans. There is no doubt that this would ensure a consistent approach to balls and strikes – however the human element of the game will be removed. What is often overlooked when rules are being updated, is the short and long term effects of those changes.

Often times, following a fastball game, umpires are the main focus of conversation. Stories are still told about certain umpires from decades ago. Coaches and players may not always agree with the calls that are made, but it was part of the game -- like it or not. Successful catchers who played or play the game will tell you that the relationship between an umpire and catcher is very important, and often something that is overlooked. There is no doubt that a catcher is the most under appreciated, most important player on the field. A good catcher can often make a good pitcher. Without umpires, that relationship is gone and you no longer need to frame pitches (amongst other skill sets).

For a sport with such a valued history it is surprising that this is even up for discussion. It will be very weird when the robot umpire calls a batter out on strikes and there is no one to argue with – just picture that in your mind right now. The game will change, for better or worse.

Certain technology is great for sports. The recent major league baseball games on television showed a clear view essentially from the catcher’s mask. Of all the things, why did something like this take so long to implement and perfect? When you watch the grand slam of curling events, the camera angle is situated in a manner where you can see the whole ice and watch the rock curl as it approaches the rings. Yet, for provincial events like the Brier you still get the standard camera angle watching two sweepers stroll down the ice from overhead. If you compare this, it is like watching a bowling ball when it is on the floor before it hits the pins.

It is clear that there are both good and potentially damaging effects from technology in sports. It is great to see subtle changes that make the viewing experience more enjoyable for fans, but others should be carefully considered before altering the landscape of a sport.

Senior Games 55+, Table Tennis Bronze Medals Askennonia members, Peter Brunkhardt, Midland, and Gunter Schmidt, Springwater, represented Simcoe County at the 55+ Winter Games table tennis competition in Huntsville winning bronze medals.

In the men’s 65 and over doubles division, our Simcoe County team was the only pair in the six-team round robin competition to beat the gold medal winners Sandy Chu and Michael Lau from Mississauga. Due to losing against teams from Port Hope and Cobourg, the Simcoe County players were denied the gold medal. In the end they rallied and brought home the bronze medals in the form of painted and engraved canoe paddles. This dynamic duo is now looking forward to preparing themselves for the World Veterans Table Tennis Championships to be held in Bordeaux, France in June of 2020.

As always, careful planning is the key to a safe and enjoyable trip. As you may be aware, travel.gc.ca offers information for Canadians, including Travel Advice and Advisories, as well as information on how to contact the Government of Canada while abroad. This website also includes up to date information for each country’s entry/ exit requirements that indicate if a Canadian passport must be valid for a certain length of time before departure from that country.

We strongly recommend that Canadian children carry a consent letter if they are travelling abroad alone, with only one parent/guardian, with friends or relatives or with a group. For the purposes of this consent letter, a Canadian child is defined as anyone who is under the age of majority (18 or 19, depending on the province or territory of residence). A consent letter is not a legal requirement in Canada, but it can simplify travel for Canadian children, as it may be requested by immigration authorities when entering or leaving a foreign country, or by Canadian officials when re-entering Canada. The letter demonstrates that Canadian children have permission to travel abroad from parents or guardians who are not accompanying them. There is a suggested form you can download from travel.gc.ca to use for this purpose. You may also reach out to our office if you would like to set up an appointment with our Commissioner of Oaths to have your signature witnessed.

About Allan Cup Hockey

Allan Cup Hockey (ACH) is the business name for the OHA Senior “AAA” Hockey League that has a tradition dating back to 1891.

Only teams that are registered at the Senior “AAA” level with Hockey Canada are eligible to compete for the Allan Cup, Canada’s oldest (1908) amateur hockey trophy. All 6 Allan Cup Hockey member teams are registered in the “AAA” category.

Players that now compete for Allan Cup Hockey OHA Senior “AAA” clubs experienced many challenges and opportunities as they progressed through various levels of competitive hockey.

Game skills were learned and varied competency levels were attained and a common desire is to keep playing the sport that they love in a highly competitive environment. Some ACH players have chased the ‘Canadian Dream’ to be a professional hockey player and were successful at the highest level, the NHL. ACH fans appreciate the willingness of these former pros to continue playing the game within our league. Other ACH players have enjoyed success at the minor professional, major college and junior levels before opting to pursue other career opportunities and none presently list ‘hockeyplayer’ as their vocation. They are competing for the love of the game; to continue to experience competition at the highest level within a familyoriented environment and to enjoy the comradeship of spending time with a group of friends.

Tone of Voice is Just as Important as Message There is more to spoken messages than the words we say. Tone of voice is just as important as the content of the message.

Voice tone can communicate love, caring, respect and gentleness. It can also convey disrespect, dishonoring, hostility or indifference. It can render an otherwise benign message threatening or abusive.

The voice transmits energy, and can hit another like a warm, welcome Chinook, or like an icy Arctic blast. This energy affects the recipient on many levels, and can trigger a variety of different feelings.

Maybe you did not mean to say it that way, and you did not intend to offend, but, unfortunately, the damage is done. It is a little like hitting someone, and then trying to erase their emotional response. Because it is 'just words', the speaker often feels he or she has not done anything 'that bad'.

If there is a solid, loving relationship, often mutual understanding and forgiveness allows for some lapses.

However, sometimes between partners, parents and children, or siblings, a disrespectful tone of voice becomes the norm in communication. This means negative and toxic energy is continually released into the emotional atmosphere.

This is not healthy for anyone. Conversely, a loving, gentle and caring way of speaking is like a soothing balm, making the home environment the emotional safe haven it should surely be.

BROWN, Brenda Lea - Passed away peacefully with family by her side on Friday, March 8, 2019 at Royal Victoria Regional Health Center, Barrie. Brenda Brown of Minesing, in her 69th year, best friend and wife of Terry Brown. Proud mother of Terry Michael and Jayson. Dear sister of Mary Jane Currah, Sharon (Roy) Burke, Alana Houle and the late Wendy McKnight. Always remembered by her in-laws Michelle & David Garraway and Randy & Barb Brown. Predeceased by her parents Alvin & Simone McKnight.

He was born January 21, 1944 in the town of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Colin was the son of the late Gertrude and Dennis Herring. Brother of Helen McNamara, Dennis Herring, Tricia Kelly and Rodney Herring. Beloved friend of Ellen Price. Father of Jamie Price. Colin worked as a Residential Councillor at the Huronia Regional Centre before retiring. He was a devout Catholic and a Secular Franciscan.

A memorial mass was held at St. Patrick's Church in Phelpston at 11 am on Saturday, March 16th.

WILLIAM “BILL” GILROY December 11, 1932 – March 9, 2019- Passed away suddenly at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Barrie on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the age of 86, but not before cracking some jokes with the nurses, and complaining about technology “these days”.

Bill will be forever missed by his wife Carol, daughter Mary (Denis), and son Will (Brittany). His silly phrases and jokes will continue to be repeated by his two grandchildren Grayson (8) and Clemence (3), with whom he loved to spend time.

He also leaves behind his two brothers, Bob (Joan) and Ross (Charlene), as well as many loving nieces, nephews.

Bill was a skilled marksman. He excelled at farming, fixing stuff, and finding five uses for just about anything.

He enjoyed bowling, euchre, and dessert. He would often be heard saying “there is no such thing as a bad pie, just some are better than others”.

Bill spent his life enjoying fresh air. He served his country in the military working on planes and travelling across Europe. After which, he moved to Alberta to farm – getting into many shenanigans with pals. He ultimately settled in the beautiful town of Minesing, where he met Carol and many more wonderful friends and neighbors.

NESBITT, JEFFREY KIRK It is with great sadness, that the family of Jeffrey Kirk Nesbitt announce his sudden passing at South Lake Hospital, on March 8, 2019. Jeff in his 52nd year, will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend Sheena and his adoring daughters, Skye and Scotia. He is cherished by his parents Carrie and Clinton Nesbitt of Elmvale and Sheena’s parents, the late Bobby Kirk and Jane Kirk of Newtonmore, Scotland. He is lovingly remembered by his siblings Joanne Potts (Cal) and Jim Nesbitt (Heather), as well as Andy Kirk (Debbie) and Julia Kirk. He was a jokester, who always had a funny remark, a positive outlook, and lived on the bright side of life. He was loved by his many nieces and nephews, cousins, inlaws, friends, and co-workers.

Jeffrey was born on Manitoulin Island and the love for his island always remained in his heart. He grew up in Elmvale and was a proud graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University, with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Jeff was the Vice President of Relationship Management at Cardtronics Canada. He was a devoted family man, who worked hard to ensure those around him had a good time and found happiness in their lives. Jeff will be remembered for his infectious laugh, insightful conversations and unique perspectives.

A visitation was on Wednesday March 13, 2019 from 6 to 9pm at Lynn Stone Funeral Home (15 Yonge St. S, Elmvale, Ontario). Funeral service was at St. John’s United Church (27 Yonge St. S) on Thursday March 14, 2019 at 11am. RETAIL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY For an agency store in MINESING/ANTEN MILLS

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser for Amanda Gould was held at Wyebridge Community Hall, Friday March 8th 2019 6 p.m. to 8 pm. Hosted by Amanda's home Church, Elmvale Community Church (ECC), the evening was sold out: 160 tickets. The total raised (tickets plus silent auction plus dessert auction plus donations) was $9,380. All proceeds go to Amanda's last cancer treatment in Germany. What a great show of support by the community; thank you!

Doors opened at 5:45 pm. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate were available and bidding on the silent auction was opened right away. There was quite a variety of items: from airline tickets to pickles, from photo shoots to crochet goodies; 35 items in total.

Dinner was served at 6:15 pm: spaghetti with sauce (meat and vegan), caesar salad and buns. Three thumbs up for the food (i.e. both hands and one foot while I stand on the other); it was tasty indeed.

As we ate, Nick began the evening’s entertainment. He played and sang heartfelt songs that he wrote for his wife and his daughter Luna. Luna has had treatment for blood cancer. Next, a band from the Orillia OPP, "The Usual Suspects," performed. Then the main event: an interview with Amanda Gould.

Charlotte introduced herself: wife of the pastor of ECC. She began the interview with questions about Amanda's family, then gently asked about Amanda's condition. Amanda has soft tissue sarcoma, a very rare type of cancer. She said that there are only two hospitals in all of Canada, in Alberta and in Toronto Ontario, who treat her condition. In Canada the success rate is 20%. Amanda has undergone treatment in Canada. She has decided, with the blessing of her doctor in Toronto, to travel to Germany; there the success rate is 80%. Amanda's most recent reports have been very encouraging. She has one treatment remaining in Germany, the last of four.

Amanda praised her community of Wyevale for their support. Amanda is confident that God has her in the palm of his hand. She said, "I don't know if it's here or in eternity but I'm dancing at the end of this journey." Charlotte finished the interview with prayer.

The winners of the silent auction were announced. Brandt Ziegler (who was responsible for Nick and the band coming) ended the evening with an appropriate song, "It's Closing Time."

LCBO RFP #2019-276 MINESING/ANTEN MILLS An excellent business opportunity is now available to established retailers in Minesing/Anten Mills.

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is seeking a responsible, customer-focused retailer to operate an LCBO Agency Store in Minesing/Anten Mills.

To qualify, the applicant must have an existing, currently operating retail business in the community and commit to operating the Agency store within established LCBO guidelines. To facilitate the sale of beverage alcohol products, the operator may be required to enter into separate commercial arrangements with the LCBO and domestic beer suppliers. The successful applicant will also be required to participate in a special LCBO server-training program to ensure the responsible sale of beverage alcohol products.

Since 1962, the LCBO has authorized more than 200 Agency stores to serve communities that have requested service but where the local population is too small to support a regular LCBO or beer store. These Agency stores are operated by local retailers within their existing retail business. Agency store contracts are normally awarded for a five-year term. In communities where there is currently an Agency store, as the contract nears expiry, the LCBO will take into consideration the fact that new businesses in the community may have been established and will allow an opportunity for all businesses in the community to compete for the next five-year term.

Operating an LCBO Agency Store provides a retailer with an excellent opportunity to increase revenue and attract customers while providing local residents with beverage alcohol services. Agency stores also deliver economic benefits to the community in many cases through job creation and increased customer traffic for local merchants.

EXCITING NEWS FOR FOOD BANK Volunteers at the Elmvale & District Food Bank were overjoyed when Township of Spingwater Council passed a Motion at the February 20, 2019, meeting approving the construction of a new facility. Further, the Township will make a one-time capital contribution of $100,000 towards the project.

Volunteers at the Food Bank have struggled with the configuration of the current location for the past number of years.

While the space was greatly appreciated the challenges are becoming a severe hardship on the volunteers’ health and safety. We have found ourselves relying heavily on other organizations for the moving of food. While we appreciate the help received from Minor Hockey, Junior Farmers, Elmvale and Hillsdale Fire Departments, a new building will certainly eliminate a lot of the logistic issues we have been dealing with.

As everyone can appreciate construction of a new building will take time but we are already working on plans and hope construction will start this Spring.

Fundraising will be ongoing throughout the coming year and we know the Community will continue to offer the wonderful support it has shown in the past.

For those questioning the need for a new facility, we invite you to an “Open House” at the existing location at 33 Queen Street West on Tuesday, April 9th from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We know we will change your mind!!!

SOME IRISH TRIVIA: WHAT IS THE BLARNEY STONE? The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney). Thousands of tourists a year still visit the castle.

The origins of the Blarney Stone's magical properties aren't clear, but one legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone while under the spell gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly.

It's tough to reach the stone -- it's between the main castle wall and the parapet. Kissers have to lie on their back and bend backward (and downward), holding iron bars for support.

Non-Partisan Campaign to Free Edwin Espinal Garners Support from Springwater Township and Three National Political Parties: Where is the Fourth? Contributed by Janet Spring

Since Edwin Espinal’s arrest, the Simcoe County Honduras Rights Monitor has received support from many different organizations and political parties. We have taken a non-partisan approach in our campaign to free Edwin Espinal and other political prisoners in Honduras; every person and organization we have approached in our community and beyond has offered assistance.

We are amazed at the incredible solidarity. Politically we have received support from Springwater Township, the Conservative, New Democratic, and Green Parties of Canada. These political parties and many Canadian organizations line up to take strong positions in defense of the human rights defenders in Honduras. Each have sent multiple correspondences to the Honduran Government, the Ambassador to Canada from Honduras – Sofia Cerrato Rodriguez – Global Affairs Canada, yet we still await support from Minister Freeland and PM Justin Trudeau.

My question to the Liberal Party of Canada is, that in the past year and now in an election year, why no response?

The SCHRM has been received by representatives from Freeland’s office, Trevor Harrison – Policy Advisor Global Affairs, MP Omar Alghabra – Parliamentary Secretary to

the Minister of International Trade, MP Anandasangaree, MP Levitt. But Minister Freeland, who is well aware of Edwin’s case and the illegalities behind it, has not spoken directly to us, nor corresponded via written emails or letters. PM Trudeau is silent.

More attention has been given to the crisis in Venezuela as the Canadian government works toward inciting a coup there. Freeland warns against the Maduro government’s human rights abuses, yet is silent on those infractions against the people of Honduras by the government of Juan Orlando Hernandez that has incarcerated our Canadian family member – Edwin Espinal.

From local council, the support has been overwhelming.

On March 6, 2019, Springwater Township Council passed a second resolution (notice of motion 11.1) to advocate for Edwin’s release: https://springwater.civicweb.net/filepro/ documents/137959?preview=140744 We have received ongoing solidarity and actions toward Edwin’s cause from the PC Party of Canada. On February 21, 2019, MP O’Toole, PC Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister sent a letter to the Honduran Ambassador to Canada, asking the Honduran government to release Edwin, due to the latest ruling from the tribunal court that deemed his case was assigned to the wrong jurisdiction court. MP Stanton has been one of our best advocates, provid oingngoing support in verbal and written communication to the Minister and Honduran government; MP Nuttall sponsored an e-petition, presented on February 20, 2019 before the House. He has also appealed to the Honduran government to release Edwin through written correspondence.

We have received overwhelming support from Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada, who is sponsoring a paper petition to be launched in April, 2019. Elizabeth May’s office has also sent many letters in support of Edwin to Honduran and Canadian government authorities, also to prominent international human rights individuals and organizations.

On March 12, 2019, MP Hardcastle sent the following correspondence to Minister Freeland. We appreciate this support and strong message to demand action from the Canadian Government against the corruption in the Honduran government. Her letter sums up the case of Edwin and the unjust treatment he has received from the Honduran government, also the blatant inaction of the PM’s office.

AUTHORITIES Dear Minister Freeland, As you will know, this is the third such missive I have been compelled to write to you in a year’s time. I write to you today about two closely related issues: the continued detainment by Honduran authorities of activist Edwin Espinal, spouse of Karen Spring of Elmvale, Ontario, and two, the very serious human rights situation in Honduras, itself.

You are surely aware that Mr. Espinal was arrested January 19, 2018, on trumped-up charges in the wake of popular protests against the outright theft of the Honduran general election by the Juan Orlando Hernandez government. This election was condemned by the Organization of American States, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the European Union Electoral Observation Missions, which reported voting irregularities, errors and systemic problems in the electoral process.

The government responded to the protests with a massive crackdown and the abolition of human rights, arresting many. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that Honduran security forces used excessive, lethal force and extra-judicial killings to control and disperse protests.

Yet it has not gone unnoticed that the Government of Canada has been working closely not just with the Government of Honduras, but also with a number of other unsavoury right-wing regimes through its membership in the Lima Group, as you seek to affect regime change in Venezuela. In your role as Foreign Affairs Minister, you have focused on the human rights abuses of the Venezuelan government, yet have been troublingly silent on the massive corruption and repression taking place in Honduras.

You have called on the Maduro government in Venezuela to respect the “sovereignty of the people,” yet ally our country with the Juan Orlando Hernandez government in Honduras, a regime that, I will say again, literally stole the country’s last federal election.

Even the Organization of American States, whose statements you have cited regularly in your case against the Venezuelan government, has called for new presidential elections in Honduras after finding copious irregularities in the previous electoral process.

Minister, I urge you to join the United Nations and Amnesty International in calling on the Honduran government to release and drop all trumped-up charges against Edwin Espinal. It is necessary to use all available means to pressure the Honduran government into releasing not just him, but also four other political prisoners--Raul Alvarez, Jose Godinez, Edy Gonzalo, Gustavo Caceres-still held in inhumane maximum-security military prisons in Honduras. It is not too late to hold the government of Juan Orlando Hernandez to the same exacting standards to which you purport to hold other regimes.

Then the Carpenters and the Mechanics face off for the bragging rights of having got their name on the trophy comprised of only items used in those two trades.

In sudden death overtime, the Construction Crew scored an adroit goal to win 3-1. It is suggested the Mechanics forgot about overdrive, went into auto mode and left it in cruise while the winners hammered away and cut corners to get the job done.

Eddie Valender, who hosts the game each year, suggests there are lots of people to thank.

Firstly, all the traffic that detoured around the street to avoid hockey sticks, pucks and goal nets, you are appreciated.

Next would be the snowplow driver, Tim McGinnis who all winter maintained the rink surface after each storm. It will be a pity if he retires and the boys will have to train another operator.

Patty Valender - and we are assured there is no nepotism here - brother to the host family, was the MVP. A special thanks goes out to Ronald (McDonald) who donated prizes and served food in the form of square potatoes defined as fries. It was very well received and appreciated. $100, totally from admissions, was raised for the Food Bank.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to Eddie.
