Edition 445, June 18, 2015 (Next Issue July 2 • Deadline is Monday June 29)

The preschoolers from Elmvale Co-operative Nursery School recently went on a field trip to Fire Station 5. On this exciting adventure, the children watched an informative Sparky video and learned about fire safety. They explored several different emergency vehicles learning about their purpose and the tools they carry. The adventure ended with the new recruits taking turns spraying the fire hose! Thank you to Firefighter Jeff and Paramedic Joel for a great tour! A fun year at ECNS is filled with class time, field trips, play and learning. Preschool is a stepping stone to transition slowly into kindergarten for children 31 months-5years. Children have access to a wide range of activities like sensory (sand, water, ice, snow, etc.), gross motor and fine motor development, circle time, painting, alphabet and number activities, music and story time. As this school year comes to an end, registration for next year is already underway. Space is available Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs. Bicycle Safety Poster Contest Winner

by Kim Tyler - Congratulations to Lily Watkins of Luella Blvd. in Anten Mills for her grandprize winning Bicycle Safety Poster, won in a contest that is an initiative of the Springwater Policing Committee and supported by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit. It welcomes participation by all four public schools in Springwater. The aim of the contest is to have peers educate their fellow peers about bike safety by creating eye-catching posters. Lily, a grade 4 student at Minesing Central, represented her school with a wonderful poster she designed that clearly demonstrates those very important rules of the road and safe biking practices. Over 100 posters were submitted. On Friday, June 12, the four winners representing their schools enjoyed lunch with Mayor French at the Township offices, during which Lily’s poster was chosen as the overall winner. Lily’s prize includes the bicycle of her choice from Bikeland in Barrie. As well, a gift certificate for a biking helmet is the prize given to each of the first place winners from the four competing schools. Lily’s poster, as the grand prize winner, will be Lillian Watkins with her winning poster displayed at the Township offices for the next standing with Jim Tyler from Bikeland and week. Congratulations to all the students who Paul Stephens of the Springwater Policing participated, particularly the four winners from Committee. each school, and nice going, Lily, for your outstanding, prize winning poster! The poster contest winners, Valerie Belcourt - Hillsdale, Korol Pikulik. - Forest Hill, Raegan Tabbert - Huronia Centennial and Lillian Watkins - Minesing with the Mayor, Jim Tyler of Bikeland representatives of the Health Unit and of the Springwater Policing Committee.

Sleeping Children Around the World

Maddison Wilkey (age 6) asked her dad, Hillsdale Firefighter Mark Wilkey, if she could play her violin at the Hillsdale Firefighter Association pancake breakfast to raise money. When Maddison’s parents asked her who she was raising money for she replied, “For the firefighters so they can help more people.” Then she paused. “But can I donate half to the firefighters and half to Sleeping Children Around the World so I can help everyone,” Maddison continued. After seeking approval from the Association it was agreed that Maddison would play violin at the Pancake Breakfast. She raised $39.63. When Maddison delivered the money to the Hillsdale Firefighters Association meeting the Association President, James, gifted it back to her so that she could donate all the money raised to Sleeping Children Around the World. With all the money raised she has enough to purchase one bed kit for a child in need. “Thank you Hillsdale Firefighters Association for supporting Maddison’s desire to contribute to her community.”
