Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice decoration
National CWL President Margaret Ann Jacobs recently received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (Latin: For Church and Pope) decoration, presented by His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto. It is an award of the Roman Catholic Church. It is also known as the “Decoration of Honour”. The medal was established by Pope Leo XIII on July 17, 1888, to mark his fiftieth priestly jubilee. In present times, the award is bestowed on persons, both laypersons and clergy, who have given service to the Church. It is the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity by the Pope and considered among the top honours the Vatican awards to laity and clergy. The current version is only awarded in gold. The obverse depicts the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul. On the left arm of the cross is the inscription Pro Ecclesia (For Church), on the right arm of the cross is Et Pontifice (And Pope). At the point of the top arm of the cross is the coat of arms of the reigning Pope. At the points of the other arms are small Greek crosses. Below the depiction of the Saints is the Latin name of the Pope. The reverse depicts a Greek cross. The award, presented during the Ontario provincial convention, is conferred for distinguished service to the church by lay people and clergy, which Margaret Ann embodies and so much more! Congratulations Margaret Ann. You truly are a shining example that Inspired by the Spirit, Women Respond to God’s Call!

GBGH and OSMH recognized for good governance This spring, the Board of Directors for both Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) and Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) were awarded the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network’s (LHIN) inaugural Award for Good Governance. The LHIN’s Board of Directors made the selection based on a nomination recognizing the work of both hospitals in developing the framework for their Birthing Partnership. The nomination specifically highlighted how the statement of principles led to the establishment of the Joint Birthing Program and how the foresight of the OSMH and GBGH Boards in establishing this governance framework has assisted both organizations in successfully operationalizing this initiative. The NSM LHIN Board of Directors recognizes how the collaboration and innovation involved in this birthing partnership improves the patient experience and care, and aligns with the Patients First mandate to improve access to services and deliver integrated care. Through the Joint Birthing Partnership, patients have access to high quality care and the reassurance the birthing and gynecological services they need are available close to home. Through the program, GBGH provides services for low-risk births while OSMH provides care for higherrisk mothers and babies. Receiving the North Simcoe Muskoka Local Health Integration Network (NSM LHIN) inaugural Award for Good Governance on behalf of Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) and Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) are (from left) Al Scott, vice chair, OSMH Board of Directors; Pat Campbell, president and CEO, OSMH; Bob Morton, past chair, NSM LHIN; Ralph Befort, past chair, GBGH Board of Directors; Gail Hunt, president and CEO, GBGH; and Bernie Uhlich, chair of the Governance Committee, GBGH Board of Directors.
County Expanding Paramedic and Seniors’ Services in Elmvale Midhurst/July 19, 2018 – The County of Simcoe is investing in the development of a new facility in the village of Elmvale that will house a Paramedic Services station and the Long Term Care and Seniors’ Services Adult Day Program Centre for the surrounding area. “With an aging population and rising paramedic call volumes across the region, we continue to make strategic investments which enable us to expand and enhance our services to meet the needs of our residents and communities,” said Warden Gerry Marshall. “This new dual use facility will serve residents in Springwater, Wasaga Beach, Oro-Medonte, Tiny and Tay for years to come and we thank our partners at Springwater Township for working with us on this important venture.” The County has acquired 191 Queen Street West in Elmvale. The facility will consist of a two bay Paramedic Services station, allowing the County to expand services to the area and address increased call volumes. The County has outgrown its current leased space at the Elmvale Fire Hall, which was originally set up for a single paramedic response unit 12-hours per day and is now being used to house a 24-hour, fully staffed paramedic transport unit. This space no longer meets the operational needs of Paramedic Services and is anticipated to be used by Springwater Fire. The Adult Day Program Centre will enable the County to expand its current program operating out of leased space at the Manse of St-John’s United Church in Elmvale. The new space will allow for an increase in capacity and reduce the existing waitlists for the program. The County’s Adult Day Program operates in Penetanguishene and Elmvale and provides daytime respite, support, education and activities for families and caregivers. Potential clients for the program are referred through a variety of sources such as Community Care Access Centres, program clientele, physicians, friends and relatives. Construction of the facility is anticipated to commence in late 2018, and be completed in mid-2019. The estimated cost of constructing the facility is $3.9 million, inclusive of land acquisition and construction. The investment aligns with the County’s Strategic Asset Management Plan to identify cost-efficient projects that align with the County’s long term goals and objectives, including reducing leased/rented spaces in an effort to manage and control long-term costs and provide flexibility to meet service demands. County of Simcoe is composed of sixteen member municipalities and provides crucial public services to County residents in addition to providing paramedic and social services to the separated cities of Barrie and Orillia.
