HOSPICE SIMCOE LAUNCHES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

The First Tap

As is the custom, the Simcoe and District Maple Syrup Producers meet at one of their member’s maple syrup bush and perform the complimentary first tap of the year. The ceremony has taken us throughout the north Simcoe area with at least three that I have been to in the last few years in the Tiny Township Lafontaine area, another in the Orillia outskirts and one in the Elmvale area (Greenlaw’s) to mention a few that the Springwater News has attended. This year, to celebrate the beginning of the 2015 Maple Syrup Season, it was at the Ellesmere Sugar Bush, one mile east of Craighurst and south on the 1st Concession of Oro-Medonte. The invite read - Come and watch our local politicians tap the first trees of the 2015 season. Tap your own tree if you like. Coffee, tea and snacks provided.

Under the watchful eye of David DeVilliers, Garfield Dunlop, MPP Simcoe North was the first tapper, He claims this is the 16th tree in 16 years that he has had the privilege of tapping. His wife Jane, a councillor in the Coldwater area, also tapped a tree.

Bill French, Mayor of Springwater and Scott Macpherson, Councillor Ward 2 OroMedonte were also among the celebrities that showed their prowess at drilling a hole, tapping in the spiel and hanging a pail on a tree.

Afterwards, those in attendance stood around outside and in the sugar shack (background) discussing the upcoming season while inside, Jennifer, Chris and Bev showed off Chris’s man cave which he is very proud of.

February 18, 2015 - Hospice Simcoe is very excited to announce the launch of The Hummingbird Campaign - a capital campaign to raise funds to purchase the property adjacent to ours. The acquisition of this property will provide both immediate and future needs for the many families that will require end of life programs and services provided by Hospice Simcoe. The cost to purchase and develop this land is approximately $900,000. We are very fortunate to have already secured approximately half of this amount from generous donors. It is our goal to raise the balance over the next six months. The acquisition of this property will: • allow us to build a second parking lot enabling us to alleviate a serious safety concern; parking on the unpaved shoulders of a very busy Penetanguishene Road. Currently, our staff is parking on a nearby residential street and, very often, when our primary lot is full, visitors are parking on Penetanguishene Road. This congestion in the front of our building makes it difficult for ambulances and other service vehicles that require short term parking. We are concerned for the safety of our visitors entering and exiting their vehicles, particularly in the winter months when snow banks narrow the road's shoulders. • provide additional outdoor space for visitors. As family visitors often stay for long periods of time, our plan includes a tranquil green space for them to get some air, take a short walk or sit and enjoy the gardens. • allow for future expansion. By purchasing this land, we will be in a position to expand, when the time comes, as there is a need for increased services. Some ideas that have been discussed are a pediatric residence; a pain management clinic (this could be inpatient or day use) a day program centre; or a respite centre. Sandra Dunham, Executive Director is excited about this opportunity. “We have been leaders in Palliative Care since we got our start in 1988. Since that time we have provided exceptional care in clients’ homes in the community. As the Residential Hospice movement got started we were again leaders. By acquiring property we will ensure that Barrie has the best possible array of Hospice Palliative Care services.” Hospice Simcoe is extremely fortunate that the Harradine family siblings, Lisa Whalen, Scott, Kevin and Marta Duivenvoorden, will be the Co-Chairs for our Hummingbird Campaign. Their mother, Greta, spent her final days at Hospice Simcoe in the first year of operation of our residential facility. Bruce Bound, Board Chair is optimistic about the community helping to secure our future. ‘Six years ago, we reached out to this community to help us fulfill a dream - to build a residential hospice where we could provide end of life service in a home like setting for the people of Simcoe County. The community supported us and raised over $3 million. Since then the community has continued to support us raising $1 million for operations every year. With our community’s support, we have provided quality end of life services to approximately 1,200 residents and support for their families over the past five years. We are confident that this support will continue with this campaign.” There is no cost to our residents, clients and their families for any of the services or programs we provide thanks to the generosity of those who make In Memorium donations, general donations and support our fundraising efforts each year. To donate to this campaign, please call Doris at our office, 705 722-5995 ext 222 or send your cheque to Hospice Simcoe, 336 Penetanguishene Road, Barrie L4M 7C2.
