SAA Palette_ Summer 2019

THE Palette

After an endlessly dreary winter, it is exciting to be discussing spring and summer activities. Spring Classes are running in all media, we are offering more summer art and history camps than ever before and we are planning all kinds of creative opportunities for all ages to fill the summer. Camps are filling; but there are still spaces, particularly for elementary school ages and high school students. Don’t let this opportunity pass your children by. We have whimsical themes, engaging and skillful teachers, loads of materials and all the inspiration needed for imaginations to expand, processes to be discovered and mastered, and unique pieces to be produced. Scholarships are still available. REMEMBER, the best summer activity ever, Paint the Street, is coming up on June 22. You can paint solo, team up with your friends, or corral the whole family for a day of expressive play with paint on the street in the sun. This is definitely something that has to be done more than once. Make it an annual activity and bring new friends along every year. This event has plenty of room to grow. We hope that over the next five years it expands across downtown Springfield, becomes a weekend destination event for folks from out of town and will become our biggest, most art-filled annual event of the year. While we love to fill your calendars, we also understand that part of the joy of summer is not over committing and leaving some time to kick back and relax. Instead of committing to an eight week course this summer, try a One Nighter. One Nighters are a great way to be introduced to a medium without a long term commitment. In just one evening you have the opportunity to throw a pot, carve and print a block, sew a book, or enamel a piece of copper. If the process strikes your fancy, then commit to a class; if once was enough, great, you have gained some experience and

insight in just one evening. Check out the schedule on the website under One Nighters. Workshops are another way to gain information and perspective in a concentrated time frame. We plan to be offering specialty workshops with guest instructors in both ceramics and metals. These will be for our more experienced students who are interested in expanding their understanding of materials and refining their technique. And, the biggest news is the launch of our hot glass studio. The production of the equipment remains on schedule for delivery and installation in early June. We have an unveiling event planned for donors and members on June 28th with demonstrations. In July we plan to be offering our first workshops in both glass blowing and fusing with visiting artists from across the region. We will have a full schedule of glass blowing classes in our Fall semester. Edwards Place comes alive throughout the summer. Motivated by the tourist traffic; but of great value to locals, programming in Edwards Place brings everyday life of the 19th century, and the Springfield characters who lived it, to life. As we become creatures of 21st century technology, the standards and practices of the 19th seem stranger and more remote and foreign. Edwards Place camps, events, and tours are a great way to stay connected to the roots of our town and experience the practices of the past. The expanded offerings of history camps this summer are bringing perspectives on cooking without modern appliances, sewing clothing, and camping out with fellow soldiers. A Murder Mystery, a tea, a bourbon and scotch tasting, ice cream with Mr. Lincoln and a garden party with the Edwards are all part of summer in Edwards Place. Mark your calendar for the annual Yart Sale. Thanks to a number of large donations, we will have a phenomenal array of art supplies and equipment for sale on Saturday, August 24th in the main campus parking lot.

The Palette Volume 2019 No.2 Is published by the Springfield Art Association; subscriptions are obtained through SAA membership and are distributed by mail. MISSION The Springfield Art Association (SAA) a community based, non-profit organization*, promotes and supports the visual arts, provides art education opportunities for the greater Springfield area, and preserves and interprets historic Edwards Place and the collections of the SAA. * SAA is a non-profit tax exempt organization organized pursuant to IRS code 501(c)(3).

THANK YOU, I know that I don’t say it often enough. I am continually humbled by the generosity of the members and supporters of the Art Association. You help us make what seems impossible, possible. Not only are we working to bring you more here at the SAA, we are working to enrich many aspects of our community through engagement and creative beautification. Everyone who is a member of the SAA is supporting the arts in the community. Beyond the personal benefits of your membership, you are supporting the SAA staff and faculty to go out into the community to generate options and ideas for a stronger community. In a time and place with such dramatic needs for basic things like food and shelter, supporting the arts can seem like a frivolous act. But building a stronger environment with the power of creative thought behind it can only help to build a better future for all.

Thank you for being a supporter of the SAA and the arts. Betsy Dollar, Executive Director

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As spring buds are blooming, so are things at the SAA! We just wrapped up one of the best events in town, Roasted: Hot Pots and Pork on April 13th. I hope that you took advantage of this family friendly raku ceramic event where everyone glazed a pot and fire it in the outdoor kiln. Thanks to all who volunteered to make the event go so smoothly, thanks to the musicians, caterers, firing teams and all who made it a grand success. Most of all, thank you to Mother Nature who took pity on us this year and offered up some perfect, cool and dry, ROASTED weather. Summer camp registration has begun and is filling up fast! There are still a few camps with open spots, so be sure to check out the website for more information. In addition, our Spring Class Session is in full gear with classes in over 15 different mediums. I will never stop being amazed at how the SAA staff juggles so much! Edward’s Place is celebrating spring with wedding showers, teas and other special events. This gorgeous, historic home serves as a lovely backdrop for parties and gatherings. In late April & early May, the popular Murder Mystery event returns, “Til Death Do Us Part” is directed by the fantastic Dave Shaw. I am honored to serve as Board President to such an active organization. As the weather warms up and we all emerge into the spring, I look forward to seeing you at the SAA! Cassandra Ostermeier, Board President

Do you have a group of children who need an educational presentation for Scouts or day camp? Or, do you know of a retirement home or professional group who would enjoy an historical presentation? Edwards Place has presentations to choose from for both adults and children, ranging from virtual tours of Edwards Place to a hands-on demonstration of 19th century toys. The fee is $50 for an hour-long presentation; however, that is negotiable for groups who would enjoy the cultural enrichment of a visit from our curator or one of our docents; but have limited funds for outreach.

ISM + SAA BEHIND-THE-SCENES WORKSHOPS

Illinois State Museum and SAA have been working on a new unique opportunity to offer our students access to behind-the-scenes at the ISM storage warehouse. This is where the museum stores its treasures not on display at the museum. They have invited students inside to draw, sculpt, and paint exotic animals from life. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop your skills and understanding of form. We will be offering this series four times a year. The schedule is being developed and will be released for the Summer session. Keep a watch on our website for details and dates for the first workshop.

WHAT ARE ONE - NIGHTERS?!

In addition to our popular Canvas + Cocktail painting evenings, we have created a series that has been selling out, ONE - NIGHTERS! These one evening, workshops introduces you to 3D mediums such as metals, enameling, ceramics and glass. Have you always wanted to take a class but nervous, about if you will like it or not? Try it for one evening! These are great experiences to bring a friend and try something new like wheelthrowing, make an enameled wine stopper or metal bowl, create your own copper bracelet, and so much more!! There are limited spaces of 10 seats per class, check out the schedule today at springfieldart.org, to see what is waiting for you to explore!

ROASTED: HOT POTS + PORK 2019

Wow! What a year! We finally were blessed with some good weather, and participants filled our lawn with around 500 attendees. We fired more pots and creatures than we have ever fired before with over 420 pots fired in our raku kilns. And we can not thank enough the 70 volunteers who dedicated so much time, energy, and love into this event from making the ceramic pots to helping to glaze, firing, serving food, providing entertainment in the popular, ‘GAME OF THROWS’ competition and more. Many thanks to our sponsors and donors. Brandt, Building Systems Of Illinois, Inc., Exciting Windows! by Susan Day, The George Family, Scott & Susan Day, Central Illinois Ace Hardware, Nelson’s Catering of Central Illinois, Selvaggio Steel, Inc., and Danny Brikshavana. Thank you all for your support of our visual art community!

SUMMER ARTOF CAMP SCHOOL ART

It ‘s here! SUMMER ART CAMP STARTS IN JUNE! The time when our studios are filled with the joy and

imagination of over 700 children creating and exploring! We are always thrilled when camp season begins, to see all of the excited new and familiar campers ready to share what they have made and which artist they had discussed. We have opened more camps this year; with a total of 63 camp offerings to open more seats and to reduce our wait lists. We still have spots open in many of the camps, if you are looking to sign-up your child (ages 4 to High-School), check out the full listing on our website at springfieldart.org. This year on opening day of member-only registration, we had a record-breaking 408 campers sign-up for our camps! We are so happy that our membership love the quality of camps that we provide and look forward to another great year of projects. What a wonderful line-up we have prepared for the children from STEAM-inspired Kindergarten to 2nd grade camps that combine geography, literature and science with visual art and investigating color language with the 4 and 5 year olds. The 3rd to 5th grade campers will be inspired by Art History throughout their many weeks. The 6th to 8th grade start to dive into specific mediums run like a college course. And for our High School students, we offer special opportunities in public art projects from murals to mosaics installed in Downtown, Springfield. Can’t wait to get started, will you be joining us?!

Board Member Spotlight

M e et D ave S ha w

As long as I can remember I have been active in the arts; from smooshing flower petals on the sidewalk to “paint ” to painting murals or creating set designs. So it became obvious that I would seek a career in the arts. I attended Illinois State University as a Comprehensive Art Major, meaning both my major and minor were in art, and graduated with an Art Education degree K-12. My first job was teaching Art to 1st grade through high school, part time, The next year I, fortunately, went full time and before I knew it I had been teaching art and drama for 38 years The last 32, of which were with the Rochester School District. It was such a joy sharing my passion for the arts with so many students over the years. When I reluctantly decided to retire I was asked, “well, what next ”. I reassured them that I would always be an advocate for the arts, knowing their importance in our lives and society. I was knowledgeable of the SAA and its mission, so when I was approached about serving on the Board of Directors, I reflected back to when my high school counselor said to me, “you love art and working with children what about being an art teacher ” and I thought, “of course”. I had the same reaction to applying to join the SAA Board, “of course”. The wide range of activities and functions of the SAA and its staff are amazing. The increasing variety of classes, for all ages, the support of local arts programs and artists, the SAA Collective, Art Outreach, the galleries, Edwards place and library offer such riches for central Illinois. Joining the Board lead me to continue being an arts advocate, teacher and artist by my increasing involvement in the many activities of the SAA. I find it incredibly rewarding being involved in the growth and evolution of the SAA facilities and programs. One very exciting focus that is being continually developed is for programs that serve and assist people of a wider and diverse demographic, such as with OMA (Opening Minds Through the Arts, a one on one art program for people with Alzheimers or Dementia).I have experienced first hand how rewarding and enriching it is working with programs like OMA.I am looking forward to working with and helping to develop programs for other special needs populations as the SAA continues to enrich the lives of so many, with and through the arts.

In Memorium Glenda G. Warren, 84, of Springfield, passed away on January 16, 2019. Glenda

married George Niles Warren and he preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Warren is survived by her children: Grant (Claudia) Warren of Springfield, Niles Warren of Champaign, and Laura (Roger) Barge of Kansas City, MO., five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister.

Glenda was an artist, art teacher and a 54-year member of the Springfield Art Association. She was a founding member of the Women’s Art Alliance, which became the Prairie Art Alliance and Glenda G. Warren is now a part of the Springfield Art Association, and a founding board member of the Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield. Her work in painting, drawing, and batik was detailed and she shared this expertise as an exceptional teacher, and as a constant volunteer, she was supportive of many aspects at the SAA. She surrounded herself and her children in a vibrant, creative household including upholstered furniture in her own batik fabrics and designs. Her house was a studio and gallery of her own art and collections of others from around the world. She passed along her love not only to her children, but to many students who passed through the doors of the SAA. We are grateful for her memorial gifts, and her legacy will live on through her students and friends who were lucky to learn from her.
