THE Palette 29th Annual Molly Schlich International/Independent Film

It is movie season! The film critics are speculating, the award nominations are mounting and it is time to catch up on some of the best films of the year that have not been shown in Springfield. Join us for the 29th Annual Molly Schlich International/Independent Film Series. The series begins Sunday January 12th and will run through Tuesday, March 3rd with eight films, each being shown three times, at 1 and 4PM on Sunday afternoons and 7PM on Tuesday evenings at the AMC Parkway Pointe 8 Theater on Lindbergh Boulevard. You may purchase a series pass with 8 punches for $50 or individual tickets for $8 at the door. Passes are available now on our website or by calling the office. This series is once again graciously sponsored by Exciting Windows by Susan Day, Peerless Cleaning and Restoration Services, the Illinois Times and AMC Theaters. Look for an insert in the January 2nd IT with descriptions of all the films. Join us for the preview party at the SAA on Wednesday, January 8th to see all the trailers and a locally produced film by Dave Heinzel called Emily. Dave will be at the screening to discuss the film.

Happy New Year! We have closed out another successful year of art education, presentations and edu-tainment. We hope that you have taken advantage of the things we have offered. The new year provides a new set of invitations to join in and be an active part of the SAA. The glass studio is a great place to stay warm while it is blustering outdoors. Check out a demonstration, try a workshop or just jump in and take a full class. The film series is back with a great line-up; loads of other classes and workshops are being offered along with a full array of exhibitions, lectures, and events. Edwards Place is offering docent training while the house is closed for the winter along with some new events. The library is even offering up some reading selections for these long winter nights. There are plenty of ways to be a part of the arts this winter. Please stay with us throughout the year. You are the reasons we work so hard to present these creative opportunities. We can never thank our members enough for all the support that you offer through your membership and participation. Thank you for a great 2019 and an optimistic 2020!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As a Springfield Art Association board member for the past six years, I have attended a wide variety of SAA events. I enjoy going to all of them, whether it is to create or buy art, learn something new, fund raise, or just to meet new people who share my interests. The SAA attracts such a mix of individuals and families to their activities, and it is fascinating to see who attends based on the theme. The Board of Directors frequently comments on how we see completely new and different people at each event, and we love that the SAA staff and volunteers work hard to create new, innovative, and exciting ideas to offer to the Springfield area. Love to create art? We have one-night or full session classes in so many mediums I cannot list them all here. Love to appreciate art? The SAA hosts exhibitions for both national and local artists. Love history? Edwards Place offers specialty tours throughout the year, and the Library Committee offers Art History Happy Hours. Love to spend time with your family? Attend activities as large as Paint the Street or Roasted or try a smaller event like gingerbread house decorating. Love to dance while raising money for the SAA? Attend Dancing with the Starz or the Beaux Arts Ball. Love to buy art? Visit our Collective Gallery to shop among 80+ local juried artists or attend our annual Fine Art Fair. Love movies? Attend the Molly Schlich International Film Series. Love to sample new varieties of spirits? Attend one of our tastings at Edwards Place, where you will even get a history lesson to go along with your samples. Love to have a fun night with friends? Attend our Murder Mystery Dinners or an original theater production. The list goes on and on, but I am convinced that there truly is something for everyone at the SAA. I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events. Follow us on social media so you don’t miss out on the fun. You will always find something of interest at the SAA! Kate Baima, President

EDWARDS PLACE 2 0 1 9 . . . A G re at Ye a r It has been a wonderful year at Edwards Place. We staged two successful murder mysteries – ‘ Til Death Do Us Part and Curse of the Edwards Place Mummy – and held two lovely period teas – the Little Women Tea and the Christmas Times Tea. We added free programs like A Civil War Playlist and Helen Edwards’ 200th birthday party. On the collections side we added some quality artifacts to our collection. A fruit dome was added to the dining room, and two trunks were added to the daughters’ bedrooms. We also received two poetry books that belonged to Helen and Helen Maria Edwards. THANK YOU to everyone who donated objects and time to Edwards Place in 2019. It is through our volunteers, committee and board members, and supporters that we are able to preserve and interpret Edwards Place Historic Home for the community.

SCHOOL OF ART As campers step up to middle school, we focus more on medium based camps. They will have the opportunity to join specialized studios of metals, digital art, wood burning and more! These students are not restricted in their creativity but are given the tools to develop their ideas!

Edwards Place has become a highlight in recent years with its historical sewing and cooking, Civil War encampment, and 19th Century lifestyle camps. These camps are sure to engage as they learn about what life was like in the past! Our award nominated high school mural camps have become something for our campers to look forward to! We started on 4th and Jefferson Streets with a mural inspired by Vachel Lindsay ’s poem, “A net to snare the moon,” followed by the “Illinois Bicentennial Timeline” on the Clearlake gateway to downtown, and “Native flowers” on the side of Wild Rose at the corner of 6th and Jefferson Streets. This year we are working with the City of Springfield to create a Route 66 mural on the train overpass on Peoria Road next to the Bingo Hall directly on Route 66. This will be an exciting challenge for our campers as we work on a much desired beautification project for the north side of town. New this year, our high school campers will tackle a Muni production. They will learn the art of scenic painting. We will be given one week to complete a full set for their theatrical debut. We will also be offering a limited 4 person glassblowing session in the Baima Glass Studio to this age group. It is going to be a hot summer! We have packed the schedule full of color, creativity, and fun! We are so grateful for your attendance in our camps! Last summer we instructed over 700 campers. With the addition of our new studios, we can open more camp options and develop new projects for everyone to explore.

Board Member SPOTLIGHT

J e n B ett i s

S e co n d V i ce P r e s i d e nt

Meet Jen Bettis! Jen is now the second vice president on our board of directors, after serving as secretary for several years. A Quincy native, Jen has now lived in Springfield for over twenty years, and has held her current job as Director of Advancement at SHG for fifteen years. Not only did her move to Springfield lead her to meeting her husband Chad, it also lead her to the SAA when she was asked to serve on the membership and marketing committee here in 2011. Since 2011, a lot has changed at the SAA. “I feel fortunate to be involved with the SAA during a time of such transformation. The Centennial Capital Campaign led to remarkable opportunities for Springfield. The service that the SAA provides for the community is also something that I’ve been impressed with over the years. The relationship with the Enos Park Neighborhood Association and residents, the Artist-in-Residence Program, Art Outreach and Art as Therapy are all making a positive impact on Springfield and surrounding areas.” Many individuals gain several years of involvement with the SAA before joining a committee or our board. Jen jumped right in, without being very familiar with the organization. She quickly learned that we offer something for everyone, and she encourages people to find their place here. “I am enthralled with historic Edwards Place. It is truly like stepping back in time and the renovations that have been made in recent years are stunning.”, says Jen. She has even dabbled in workshops and Canvas + Cocktails, although she never considered herself an artist. She is especially proud of a reindeer print block she created in a holiday workshop last year. “ The staff and instructors at the SAA encourage creativity and believe that there is an artist inside of everyone, so I’ve felt at home at the SAA from the beginning.” Jen has been dedicated to the Edwards Place Fine Art Fair in September for the past several years, and we are grateful for her cheerful spirit and willingness to help with not only that event, but any other task throughout the year. We’re thrilled to have her on our executive committee for the next few years!
