The Palette Volume 2018 No.32 Is published by the Springfield Art Association; subscriptions are obtained through SAA membership and are distributed by mail. MISSION The Springfield Art Association (SAA) a community based, non-profit organization*, promotes and supports the visual arts, provides art education opportunities for the greater Springfield area, and preserves and interprets historic Edwards Place and the collections of the SAA. * SAA is a non-profit tax exempt organization organized pursuant to IRS code 501(c)(3).
Spring is here…a time for warm weather, new growth and change. A major change in our landscape and future has finally taken place. A few hearty souls came out in March to brave the cold and watch as the old and familiar buildings were taken down to make room for our new studio. In order to preserve the memories of the past, we have set up a time lapse camera to record that day and the whole construction process and progress. Once the studio is complete in fall, we will make that recording available to watch and marvel. Even though the new studio will be available for the ceramic and metals winter session of classes, we still need to purchase the specialized glassblowing equipment before we can offer those classes. Thanks to those who participated in the annual bartender’s battle at Arlington’s and the O’Brien envelope party, we have made significant progress in raising the $84,000 price tag needed. Additional fundraising events are being planned for the future. As the campus grows, so does the interest in our spring and summer educational activities. Registration for the summer classes, OMA (Alzheimer’s program), and summer camps has been very strong. Many slots are full and closed. A new procedure to simplify and shorten the registration process was instituted March 1st. It was the result of a long overdue upgrade of our complete data software package. Time to mark your calendars! Paint the Street has been moved to June 23rd this year to hopefully escape the humid July heat and rain. A truly family outing with numerous food vendors, lots of kid friendly activities and washable paint. Finally as happens every June 1st here at the SAA, we have a change in the make up of our board of directors. For those of you who are either retiring or resigning from the board, I want you to know how much I appreciated your hard work and support in making so many of these successes come true. I hope that you will continue to be an active and integral part of the SAA. And for all of you new board members, I want to welcome you and assure you that it will be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. EDWARDS PLACE Edwards Place is Open! The time has come for us to reopen the 2nd floor of Edwards Place. Our contractors, staff, and volunteers have worked hard to restore the bedrooms and we are ready to share it with you! Not only will visitors get to visit c.1860s private living while getting a hands-on experience in Mollie’s bedroom (yes, this means there are things to touch!), but will also get to experience what a fashionable young married couple’s room would look like in the 1870s in Benjamin and Alice Ferguson’s bedroom. In addition, we have one room devoted to the Springfield Art Association, the stewards of Edwards Place for more than 100 years. We are so thankful to everyone who made the restoration of the 2nd floor possible. It looks like a new (old) space and feels like a home once again. You won’t believe your eyes and you certainly won’t want to leave!
Summer History Camps This year, Edwards Place is hosting three history summer camps for two weeks each. These camps are Life in the 19th Century for 3rd to 5th graders (June 4-8; June 11-15), Historical Cooking for 6th to 8th graders (July 9-13, currently sold out!) and high schoolers (June 18-22), and Archaeology for 3rd to 5th graders (July 16-20; July 23-27). Our newest addition is Historical Cooking, so tell your high schoolers about this new opportunity! While we will, for the most part, be using the conveniences of our modern kitchen, these students will have the opportunity to cook with recipes used in the 19th century and learn about historical etiquette and cooking methods. History Comes Alive! History will come alive again this summer in Edwards Place with two regular FREE programs. Every other Wednesday at 1 PM, our volunteer docent Arlene Cooney will be playing the part of Helen Edwards in “Entertaining and Etiquette with Mrs. Edwards”. Guests will be able to have an open-ended conversation with Mrs. Edwards about what it was like to host parties and keep up social expectations in Lincoln’s Springfield. Every Friday at 1:00pm, our curator Sarah Adams, will present “Piano Music from the Edwards Family Songbooks” on a piano that was heard by Abraham Lincoln on many occasions. After these events, guests are invited to stay for guided tours of the house. The music program is free, tours are $5 for adults and free for children 10 and under.
EDWARDS PLACE A Summer Play about Illinois History When a lost tourist stumbles into the back room of an Illinois history museum, she discovers that there’s a story behind even the smallest of artifacts. Any body’s Story: 200 Years of Illinoisans and Their Stuff is a series of vignettes inspired by the objects in the “Bicentennial & Beyond” exhibit at the Illinois State Museum - watching the play will literally be like watching these objects’ stories come to life. This Illinois bicentennial play is written and directed by Mark Beanblossom and produced by Edwards Place and the Illinois State Museum. You can attend the show at Edwards Place on July 6 or 7 at 7:30 PM, or attend at the Illinois State Museum on July 8 at 2 PM. Tickets will be $20, $15 for members, and can be purchased on our website (www.edwardsplace.org).
Trash to Treasure: Findings from our Archaeological Dig The artifacts uncovered during the October 2017 Fever River Research’s dig into a privy behind Edwards Place have been sorted and cleaned! Floyd Mansberger and his crew have uncovered great pieces of history that hadn’t seen daylight since the mid-19th century. Many of the artifacts found are similar to items that had been excavated in a previous dig of another privy on our property. Patterns on ceramics were found to be from the same set and vessels from a child’s tea set were recovered from both pits. Because of these findings, and because many items were tossed out unbroken, it seems that both privies were filled in a single discarding of older and less fashionable items by the Edwards family. The artifacts are an excellent example of Springfield society life – including high-end alcoholic beverage bottles and glasses like syllabubs and “lemonades” (fluted whiskey lemonade tumblers). Other little items that were found include a chess piece, a toothbrush, and dominoes. Some of these items will be on display in our upcoming Archaeology Room – a space that had originally served as a servant’s dining area or scullery.
Servant’s Tour of Edwards Place See Edwards Place from the perspective of the hired help. Learn the kinds of tasks that were required of them daily and from season to season. This tour, on Thursday, June 14th at 6 PM, will show you the working parts of the house that are not included in the daily tours, including the servant’s quarters in the attic and the laundry in the basement. $15 per person, $10 for members.

Starring Springfield: Through the Eyes of John Starr Stewart Curated by Curtis Mann, Stephanie Martin and Sarah Adams
July 2 - 28 Reception: Friday, July 13, 5:30 - 7:30 PM Take a step back in time through the turn of the 20th century photographs by Springfield photographer John Starr Stewart. Stewart was a cellist who worked at the state auditor’s office during the time he took these photographs. His work included many images of every day life – his peers, Springfield sights, and special events were often pictured through his lens. The scrapbooks he created of cyanotype photos still exist in the Sangamon Valley Collection at the Lincoln Library and offer a personal glimpse into life c.1900. We are excited to present this show in conjunction with Curtis Mann and Stephanie Martin from the Sangamon Valley Collection as part of a continuing partnership on Springfield history.
