Languages across the world…

Spring Dale as an institution firmly believes in providing both wings and roots to its children. Wings to soar high globally and roots to yet remain connected to their culture and values.

In keeping with the school's mission and vision this year's theme was 'Languages across the world' that propelled the children to understand that though all countries of the world speak different languages, they are united in speaking the common language of love, concern, care, gratitude, altruism, empathy and sympathy. The students penned down their views and ideas in such thought provoking and myriad forms that laid the very foundation of the entire content of this e magazine.

The school witnessed a cataclysmic change in all areas be it the methodology of teaching or the activities pursued. But as long as this indomitable spirit of ours survives, the school and its annual magazine will remain successful.

It’s not just a thing of our glorious 52 years but moreover 52 years of disciplined approach to working towards achieving our motto ‘Satyam Vad Dharmam Char”.

With renewed energy and hope we begin our offline school session in April 2022. We share the joy of getting our students and teachers back in the school premises. It’s a joyous moment. While we rejoice, we are mindful of the challenges and the gaps that the past two years have left us with. We feel grateful to and proud of our teachers who adapted remarkably well to the challenging situation of online classes ensuring the continuity of education during the pandemic. But we know that it has not been a smooth journey for the students. The loss of peer learning and the creativity that flower best in in-person interactions, the weakening of writing skills, and

the

constraint

of

online

pedagogy

are

all

part

of

the

student

experience. Collating these experiences will be our endeavor as we begin the new academic calendar and explore ways to bridging these gaps with all our collective efforts. We welcome our students back to school and wish them a wonderful school year.

To the staff, we would like to express our sincere admiration for the outstanding efforts to provide continuity to teaching and learning during the pandemic. We appreciate everything that you have done over the past two years. The professionalism you have shown has been immensely motivating.

We pride ourselves on the brilliant performance of our students and the dedication of our staff to making teaching and learning a great success. As always, we are counting on you to go the extra mile.

As we embark on our journey ahead we feel invigorated and refreshed after completing a successful year rife with the challenges ups and downs and the opportunities of growth which the present circumstances has bestowed upon us. The education system as a whole has undergone a seismic shift. Times are changing faster than anyone anticipated and we are proud of the strides taken, living up to our institutional ethos, maintaining a continuum in teaching and co- curricular activities.

Whether it was conducting online examinations or maintaining a balance between the offline and online teaching we thought anew and acted anew, implementing the technological advancements. The present times have also entrusted upon us the responsibility to prepare our students to be mentally strong and stable understand each other’s needs and opinions. The values that bind us all together- the language of humanity, compassion, love and respect. Hence designed is the core curriculum of our happiness classes that have gained a strong foothold now. The worthy committee of management who have been at the helm of all school affairs along with the strong team of Spring Dale are continually striving for excellence and we shall continue to press forward emerging stronger every time we face a challenge.

Greetings.

Happiness Is A Direction Not A Place!

To be truly happy you need a clear sense of direction. But where do you get this direction? To reach your passionate destination, you need a direction. This can be acquired by imbibing the life skills, which is important in taking one to a platform where you are doing what you enjoy and be successful. The path of success may have many turns, you might be sometimes lured by the wrong turns and find a vacuum, but there’s always an opportunity to take a U-turn and get on to the right track.

Remember on your way back the same things might be visible again and enticing you and coaxing you to revert. But WAKE-UP, WAIT, WATCH, WEIGH yourself with the life skills you have imbibed throughout your journey as a student. Life skills are your psycho social competencies and interpersonal abilities that help making informed decisions, sort out problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathize with others and cope with situations to manage your lives in a healthy manner. All this is being inculcated in you during class hours in school and parents also focus on these while nurturing you.

So adapt and adopt • Collaboration as a value and skill • Building on rationalizing, evaluating and analyzing • Tolerance and resilience • Gratitude, honesty and righteousness.

Go ahead… make the best of all these opportunities that come your way, for they may not knock again. Finding the right direction in life is not something that happens to you, rather it is something you create. Remember at some point you have to stop thinking of taking action rather ‘ACT’!

It is our great pleasure to reunite in the form of an association that intends to create more beautiful moments all together, integrating and reviving childhood, spreading joy all over again. We are associated to bring ourselves out of our stressful lives and maximize our strength by channelizing positivity in every sphere of life.

In the last 2 years, due to pandemic, the dreaded virus, our pace has definitely slowed down. We have lost our near and dear ones. On behalf of SDLAA, I would like to pay my sincere and deepest condolences to their families. No one was prepared for the sudden loss; it came like a swift storm. However, we should take comfort in knowing that he/ she is resting in the warm and cozy arms of the Almighty.

Nevertheless, life doesn't end here. The show must go on....

So, we are prepared to progress our journey together by helping and guiding each other in every sphere of life, in whatever way we can and we will.

Hannah is a teen who is alone all the time. Her father is abusive and mother died while suffering from cancer. Hannah was also a victim of bullying. No one really liked her.

One day, she was walking home from her part – time job. She was wearing headphone and drinking coffee. She saw a dog whimpering. She wanted to help it but her fear of dogs didn’t allow her. People were laughing, throwing stones at the dog, shooting a video and some were walking past it as if it wasn’t even there. She gathered up some courage to go forward, comfort the crowd to stop their cruel actions and to treat the dog.

She ripped the crowd apart and yelled loudly at the crowd, “STOP IT! Can’t you help it or see how much it is suffering?” The crowd that was gathered there started leaving with annoyance painted all over their face. The incompassionate behaviour of people gathered there made Hannah uncomfortable. ‘Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.’ Hannah was a true believer of these words spoken by Dalai Lama XIV. She bent down to see the dog. She saw it had a very deep wound on its leg. She started to think,” What shall I do?” She was sacred but still she clogged up and ran towards the nearest vet hospital.

She got the dog checked by the vet. Now, it was time to pay for the hospital fees. It was almost one thousand rupee. She started to look in her bag to see for the amount.

She came across her savings. It was almost twenty thousand. She smiled a bit and paid the bills. She bent down and patted the dog’s head as it was wagging its tail, she said,” It was only for you, they bought a collar, packets of food for the dog.

Lucknow was found in the time of Suryavanshi Dynasty by Laxman, younger brother of Lord Ram. This city has so many buried stories that hardly people know.

Saadat Ali Khan came in 1722 and since then Lucknow got its new identity as the city of Nawaabs.

The famine back in the year 1784 was controlled so smartly by nawaab Asaf-UdDaula as he made his people work whole day to make an unplanned building and in return gave them food and this way the great Bhool Bhulaiya was made. In the year 1858 the great warrior Jhalkari Bai alone made a large troop of the British army run behind her in place of Rani laxmi Bai from Jhansi to the Sikandra Bagh in Lucknow and was martyred here after killing maximum of their men. Not just this Lucknow has this unrecognized place - the Firangi Mahal where in 1921 Mahatma Gandhi stayed and made some important decision after the non co-operation movement. Not just this we have so many beautiful monuments like the Imambara, The residency, the art gallery and definitely the haunted Butler Palace.

Lucknow has given the world a beautiful 200 years old form of art ‘KATHAK’. .

Lucknow has been listed as the 17th-fastest growing city in India and 74th in the world. In recent times I have heard a lot of people complaining about this city and the way they are staying here meaninglessly, this is because we hardly make efforts to find the soul of the city. So from now on begin to feel the soul of your city instead of just living here.

The anxiety before getting the exam results, The class presentation poems and plays, The getting punishment insults, The distressingly alarming early morning uniform inspection, The unalterable ‘goooood mooorniing maaaam' song, Before the tests that constant striving for perfection, The post exam ponderings- ‘what all did I do wrong?’

The joy of being asked to rub the board, The pride of being made the class representative, Those secretly played games when bored, Fingers crossed when teacher’s presence was tentative, The melodious lunch Bell, The canteen’s chola bhatura’s eager wait, How good did others' food smell, It not only smelled but also tasted great, Skipping the lunchtime discipline duties, The holiday HWs done on the last 2 days, The so-called fish markets and the teachers shouting ‘Quiet please!’

The truants who always looked forward for holidays, Then comes the (awful) day of PTM, Those dreadfully haunting PTM Saturdays, The wonderings ' what wrong did we do the whole month, what all will ma’am tell them!?’

Lastly, the session ending holidays And we left to mull over the past year ‘those were the days... O that! We could live them again.

Teenage is the period of our lives when we are aged between thirteen and nineteen.

It’s a period in which we experience many physical and psychological changes. We become cautious start thinking and decision making. We even tend to become shy.

Sometimes we just want solitude, we just want to be in our houses alone.

Mindfulness is very much important in teenage and travelling is one of the best mindfulness activities.

When you have spent the first couple years of your teenage being locked in your house due to the COVID lockdown then that urge of being inside is even more prominent. That’s the case with me, being in my home for two years I have somewhat lost the will to go outside but still some part of me really want to go out, to travel, to explore the places and when I do so I feel superb.

Its truly awesome to be away from the city for sometime and be with nature. When I travel the places around me, I get lost in that sublime beauty of earth. I just want to be there forever. The fresh air that fills my nostrils makes my lungs happier as they get annoyed by the polluted city air. Those innumerable stars above my head makes my eyes exuberant, it’s far better than seeing that pollution smog day and night. The velvety soft grass beneath my feet makes them feel relaxed. It gives the comfort which they could never find on that hard flooring of our homes.

On returning, I observe quite a many changes in myself. I feel joyful, confident and independent. I become curious about the world around me.

It’s sheer pleasure wandering the places around us.

Sure, from the tongue, it is.

But from within, It’s a common language that is a bliss.

I guess, “Benignancy” was the language that felt right.

Be it the rage of farmers, Or the blackout Tuesday, Every human refuted the ‘justice-giver’, Because the language of ‘compassion’ suffused a radiant ray.

Malevolent beasts wandering with artillery Turning the once green land; that the naïve ones grew, Into a barren ground of decaying bodies.

Sometimes, ‘hatred’ becomes a language too.

Though, the sundry linguistic ways are bewitching, Its even more attractive to witness, The incredulous uniformity, Of the soul’s language in this world’s progress.

It is not an uncommon sight during parent-teacher meetings that a guardian would exhort the teachers to do everything in their power, from gently rebuking to flat out engaging in corporal punishment, in a bid to ensure higher grades for their kids. If one were to look a bit longer, they would see the child standing there emotionless, probably mortified by the humiliation at the hands of the only two authority figures they know at that age.

There is enough scientific evidence from education researchers around the world about the long-term damage it causes to the cognitive development of a child. Indeed, the adage ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’ should be reintroduced as ‘spare the rod and the child will thrive’ or, in fact, ‘use the rod and spoil the child’ for a more a cynical audience.

It is important to remember that this so-called ‘rod’ is rather metaphorical. A good, oldfashioned spanking isn’t the only way a parent, teacher for that matter, can ‘spoil the child’. While students go through many teachers over the course of their formative years, they remain with the same set of parents. Thus, the impact of a bad teacher can potentially be compensated by two excellent ones, the same does not hold in the case of parents. Thus, it is important to fix our thoughts and energies of what parents can do better to help their children achieve their maximum potential.

Parents often believe that school performance is only metric through which a child’s intelligence can be judged. Parents must recognise that children are not meant to excel in all subjects and there is no shame if they don’t excel in any at all. The world is abounded with stories of top scientists who did not do well in school but ended up making lifechanging discoveries. While our straight-jacketed education system is very much at fault and does its part at casting down children from achieving their full potential, a little encouragement from parents and a sense of unconditional support may go a long way in helping their child find their true calling, be it sports or art or dramatics or something entirely unique.

The oft-caricatured “Sharma Ji ka beta” is somewhat responsible for the poor mental wellbeing of children in schools, which often goes unnoticed. Such comparisons that often betray a feeling of disapproval greatly impact the self-confidence of children and results in a defeatist attitude in other aspects of life as well. It is imperative that parents provide enriched environments for their children that focus on a ‘growth mindset’ wherein children believe that there is always scope and time to improve themselves in life without the pressure of unwarranted comparisons.

Parents should not have different standards from their girl child in any aspect of life be it schooling, higher education or employment. Undervaluing the ambitions of their girl child or selling short their achievements is often a sign of parenting that leaves a lot to be desired. It is important that parents introspect and ask themselves if they are treating their girl child like they would treat their male child. If the answer is anything but a no, they need to change themselves and do better to ensure their child achieves their full potential.

Success is a dream that we all see. To make it happen in our real life we must take small steps in our day to day life. Success is build on a strong foundation. Success is something that can be achieved by making the best use of our abilities and the resources that we have. Success isn’t very easy as spelled but requires greater patience.

Everybody in this world is born with a unique talent. It is most essential for you to recognize your passion. Passion in doing any work that gives you inner happiness and satisfaction. If you identify your passion and work accordingly, the path of your success becomes clear.

YOU yourself are an important foundation of your success. SELF-LOVE is the ultimate step to success. You need to make yourself a priority. You need to care and love yourself like you care and love others, your work, your home, etc.

Meditation of 5 to 10 minutes in a day will help you to clear the cluster of thoughts in your mind. When you clear your mind, breathe, release your thoughts as they come to the surface, you allow your mind to let go of the emotions and worry, and reset to sort things out and align to what is truly important to you, your heart and soul.

Work over your fears. Fear is not bad rather it is kind of a guide. When you have fears ask why, but don’t give in. Make it your mission to work through the fear and counter it with a truth. As you will acknowledge your fears they will loose their power and YOU will emerge as a winner.

Learn from your mistakes. No one on this earth is perfect. All of us do mistakes but wiser are those who learn from their mistakes. Failure is a part of the process of becoming successful if you make it a teacher. Learning and growing after failure makes it useful.

I always take pride in myself over the fact that regardless of the situation, I’ve always found a way to be happy, making the best of the situation. But just like anyone out there I’m still left with regrets when I look back on this long journey of mine. There’s so much I’d like to change and wish to do better that choosing one particular incident seems very difficult. But out of all the things I’d advice my 20 year old bright- eyed self, only one thing comes to the forefront.

I’d advice myself to be braver. In everything and anything.

I come from a middle class family with two siblings, an elder brother and a younger sister.

Being the middle child I always felt that it was okay for me to sacrifice a few things, seeing it as my responsibility to accept these sacrifices without any complaints.

Furthermore, the time when I was born was so much different than the beautiful times of today. There were so many inequalities infesting our world and unfortunately I had to experience one of them closely. Like so many others of my generation, I had to bear the sexist treatment and expectations that the society seemed to deem me worthy of.

Somewhere between those rude comments, those heavy expectations of settling and being a good housewife instead of trying to make a career for myself, of giving up my dreams to have a family of my own seemed to weigh heavily on me. I slowly started to forget the reasons which I was fighting for, the reasons why I refused to bend to society’s will.

Somewhere between being a good daughter and a good woman, I somehow forgot becoming a happy me. I gave up fighting for so many things that at the moment seemed to be trivial but now that I look back seem so precious. I wished I didn’t live a life full of careful behavior and well mannered habits. I wished I was brave enough to take risks and to live life a bit more freely. I wish I was brave enough to open my eyes to a new scary world, full of different experiences and unique people.

When I look back on the days of my 20s all I feel is a deep desire to go back and be braver, be courageous enough to take risks, to give myself the freedom to explore and make mistakes, to be brave enough to learn from my mistakes and try again.

But above all I wish I was brave enough to say so many unsaid things to so many people in my life, from telling my parents that I wished to study more to fighting for that last cookie with my brother, from telling my best friend that I admired her carefree attitude to giving that one guy in college my number just so we could connect and stay friends over the years. As a girl from an education focused family, I always felt a bit shy when it came to matters outside academics and I wished that I was braver.

It’s one the reasons that whenever I look around me and see the brave courageous youth of today doing so many daunting feats all by themselves, I’m filled with a bittersweet feeling of pride and sadness. Proud because I get to witness a generation of young people who are so much braver than I ever was. At the same time I feel the bite of sadness whenever I think of the naïve shy 20-year old me that never felt brave enough to choose herself over everyone else.

In the end my only hope is that if a 20 year old is reading this, you’ll be a bit braver in life.

Every year 24th December is celebrated as ROSHNI ‘An annual Children’s festival’ to commemorate the birth anniversary of our Founder Director Ma’am Krishna Sood who as a star illuminated the lives of many. She always wished to see the children happy and for this reason her birthday is dedicated to creating an environment of happiness in the school.

The day started with a special assembly briefing the children about the admirable qualities of Ma’am Sood and her untiring efforts in the growth of the institution.

Various activities were conducted to make this day special for all the students. A story telling session was done by the teachers of classes P.G to Class V. Teachers used props and with beautiful drawings enthralled the kids with the mesmerizing stories like “Magical Pot”, ‘Jar of Desire’, ‘Elephant and his friends’ to name a few.

Students depicting the birth of Jesus Christ created coinciding with Christmas a nativity scene. Students of Class VI – X made colorful drawings and sketches, which were a sight to behold. They had a class party and also displayed their talents through singing, dancing and enactment.

14th of January is an important day for all Spring Dale’ans as we celebrate it as Founders’ Day, the day when the Founders’ vision was transformed into reality. The philosophy of Sir B.S. Sood and Ma’am Krishna Sood to impart value-based education to the masses became an invincible reality. This vision remains the guiding star for the institution to grow in leaps and bounds.

This year the day started with the garlanding of the statues of our founders and a special virtual assembly to mark the importance of the day. It was followed by the online competition ‘Flickered’ 2022 which was initiated by the alumni last year. The students thoroughly enjoyed the competitions -Wanna be a Super Chef, Crazy drawing in time lapse video, scavenger hunt, making short film etc. Parents also enjoyed helping out their children in compiling the videos. All in all it was an enjoyable experience for them.

Happying Hours Happiness Curriculum is an educational program for children. The objective is to improve the mental well being of pupils, and it teaches mindfulness, social-emotional learning, critical thinking, problem solving, and relationship building. Its purpose is to support decision making by building on emotional awareness. The introduction of the happiness period is a pleasant change in the school curriculum.

The school conducted happiness activities from July 2021 on the following topics : Perception Altruism Emotinal Management Self awareness Relating connect with people Purpose of life and what keeps you going.

Impact on Students: Better relationship with teachers, increased participation inside the classroom and increased focus and mindfulness among students.

Impact on Teachers: Prioritising values over academic success, changing teaching orientation and increased collaboration among teachers.
