Bio on Anne Lorkowski I've been horse crazy ever since I can remember, but growing up in the middle of urban San Diego with decidedly non-horsey parents, my equestrian pursuits were limited to playing with Breyer horses, reading all of the Marguerite Henry books, and watching racing on TV on Saturday afternoons. Then in 1987, a stunningly beautiful colt named Alysheba won the Kentucky Derby. If you've never seen this race, stop right now and find it on YouTube. It was one of the most courageous moments in the history of the Derby. I fell instantly in love with the horse and with the sport. I dreamt about how fun it would be if I could run away from home, and work for Alysheba's trainer, Jack Van Berg, as his groom. Let's skip forward a few decades. I finished high school, college, and finally veterinary school, achieving my lifelong career goal. I was working hard and making a good living, thought I had the rest of my life comfortably mapped out. Horses were relegated to occasional weekend watching the races at Santa Anita or Del Mar. But then life took a hard left, my dream job evaporated and I found myself jobless and rudderless. At times of personal upheaval or uncertainty, I always took solace at the racetrack. So I found myself at Santa Anita on a Thursday afternoon in 2011, and Jack Van Berg had some horses running. Somewhere I found enough courage to approach him, introduce myself, and express my fandom for Alysheba. Mr. Van Berg invited me up to his box to watch the races, asked for my phone number, and extended an invitation to come to his stables at Hollywood Park the next morning. Soon I was visiting once or twice per week, learning everything I could about racehorses and training. On my first visit, a big, almost jet-black horse in his barn caught my eye. Film Fortune was a seven year old gelding, once considered good enough to be on the Kentucky Derby trail himself, but now running in the cheap races. He was tall and handsome, with the large liquid eyes so common to the descendants of Seattle Slew (Fortune is a great grandson). Now I may not have had a lot of riding experience, but I knew a good horse when I saw one. After a few months, I asked Jack if I could maybe please give him a home once his racing career was over. One of the proudest moments of my life was the day Fortune retired from the track, and Jack said to me, "I know you love him and you'll give him a great home. He's yours." (The second proudest was the day I confided my run-away-from home fantasy to Jack, and he belted out in his gravelly voice, "well, why didn't you?") So now I found myself the owner of an off-track Thoroughbred, and no clue as to what to do with him. Thankfully through local word-of-mouth I found Gretchen Clark and Showcase Training Stables in Redlands. Gretchen is a true and honest horsewoman, and I knew from the moment I met her that Fortune and I had found our forever home. She began training him for hunters, and he immediately displayed a natural aptitude for the sport.

With her talented assistant trainer Jessica Clark, he began showing, and winning, on the Inland Empire (CA) Hunter Jumper circuit. We've been at Showcase for over 6 years now. Showing under the apt name of Kindred Spirit, he continues to excel in the hunter ring, and I've learned more and become a better rider than I ever dared dream. I kept Jack updated about all of his accomplishments, until he passed away at age 81. As for me, I found my dream position as an associate veterinarian at Norco Animal Hospital in Norco, CA. My wonderful partner, David, is my biggest supporter. Jack and my late father are my guardian angels. Gretchen and Jessica have taught me to have confidence in myself and to check my adult amateur anxieties at the in-gate. I am a better person because of my horse, and he will have a home with me forever.

He was born on September 18, 1964 in Wesel, North RhineWestphalia in Germany. Steffen Peters is 57 years old. He first started riding at the age of seven and competed in weekend dressage shows. Once he was 15, he started competing outside of Germany in international competitions. Soon after doing the international competitions, he got his first horse at 16 as a gift from his dad. What was his first medal? In 1996 at the Summer Olympic in Atlanta, Steffen won the bronze medal with the U.S. dressage team, which was his first medal. Steffen Peters was riding Floriano (a horse breed) and was with a team at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Steffen did not compete in the games, but Peter and his team won a bronze at the 2006 World Equestrian. Steffen Peters began riding a TC Ravel that started being his most successful horse. Ravel carried Steffen to a qualification for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Little more about Steffen Peters? Steffen Peters attended at least five Olympic games, he won a team bronze medal on two occasions in 1996 and 2016 which is very nice to hear. Also, he won a silver team medal in 2020. After awhile, Steffen Peters retired Ravel from competition after a 2012 Olympic games. Ravel was inducted into the United States Dressage Federation Hall Of Fame, but Peters found a new horse that participated in the 2015 Pan Am Games which became his most successful horse ever.

The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most loved NBA teams. They have won 16 championships. Although I love and watch them, I have to say I don't like Lebron. Not downsizing, but he’s downright embarrassing. He can't lose without crying. Didn't have one reason to like except the fact he can play well. He's boring and in spite of a dramatic stuck up attitude, he can dribble. Just like that it has become a drama about specific players. The Lakers are supposed to produce champions. I will be focusing on the old Lakers. They have more to be proud of. I love all four of those men and their skills and beliefs. As a Christian I feel arguing is wrong and is a sin. A man is only as good as his word. Lakers history inspires me to play with that ball. These men hold more records than Guinness. These men are history and inspirations for millions. Kobe, Shaq, Jerry West, Magic, and Wilt Chamberlin are some of the hall of famers that have been on the Lakers. The work of these champions is well deserved on all outcomes. Karl Malone doesn’t have any rings but is well deserving of his earnings. Don't let gossip fool you when it comes to these players. No wonder they call Malone the mailman. Shaq has four championships and I wonder why. Maybe because he is smart enough to control his temper and be 12 cooperative with his teammates.
You can see the sheer excitement popping off their faces. Lebron and his teammates have never felt better. 2020 for the win with 17 finals. The joy was good enough to make a grown man burst into tears. All time best feelings. I feel for a photo almost as if I was in it. Just like that I can be proved wrong with big measures.
The Los Angeles Lakers have a long history of greats, championships and all sorts of impressive stats. I could not put “I” in front simply , because these are proven facts. 1949 to 2020 and still hitting strong targets. Even so, improvement. This ruthless roster of players is why there are millions of fans across the globe. Sports in general are even to make you smile. With every, punt, punch, throw, swish, squeak of sneakers there is excitement. Even if you don't like this team, all respect should be paid. Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant were best of friends not even to an extent. They were like brothers. They loved each other like family. Pau gave Kobe more respect and support and that's why Pau is Kobe's best friend. Kobe made a trademarked slogan saying, ”Friends hang sometimes, banners hang forever.”
After Kobes death, Michael Jordan explained how multiple people were surprised that Kobe and him were very close friends. In Kobe honor, he cried while explaining still. ”Maybe it surprised people that Kobe and I were very close friends. ”He stated at the memorial now, the only thing I wonder is why anyone would be surprised? ’When Kobe Bryant died, a piece of me died.” In the institute he goes on to say how he can have empathy for the death of Kobe. With all the advice Kobe would ask for he compared him to a younger sibling. ”And as I got to know him, I wanted to be the best big brother that I could be. ”Later says, ”Now he got me having to look at another crying game for the next 3 to 4 years”. He goes later on to show that Kobe always made things enthusiastic. Even says that he is inspired on what kobe has left. The best duo in all 2000 history spoke up at Kobe's institute. Shaq honors how much of an amazing father Kobe was, Feven knowing it was snatched short. He says Kobe is intelligent by quoting, ”They are out here playing checkers and I’m out here playing chess.” He then jokes saying, ”I guess so Kobe,” I don't know how to play chess.” Not only were they an amazing duo they were amazing friends. A enthusiastic friendship, which led to 3 back to back championships. The Lakers always and always will have one of the best team chemistry’s. Ever since Magic and Jerry West. They probably have one of the best team chemistry in the entire NBA. The chemistry they have on the court, they have off the court. They also have that love for their fans. Their fans are like family to the Lakers. They do anything they can to repay their fans for everything they have done for them.

U.S. VOLLEYBALL TEAM By: Nancy Ocampo, Anali Saavedra & Desiree Martinez, Italia Sosa Desert Ridge Academy
The U.S volleyball team first started in 1895 and it still continues in 2021.The U.S women's team won a battle against Mexico at the Pan Am Cup. They also won 9 gold medals, made it to the semifinals after a tough game. Eventually went against Brazil in the semi finals. Definitely a tough match but they won. They also won the bronze at the FIVB world tour. I was also inspired by our own volleyball team here at school.”The DRA Volleyball Team”. Watching volleyball videos made my journalist group inspired. I wanted to play it because it looked interesting and very cool. Then when I actually got to play it, I enjoyed it. This is what inspired me to write about volleyball. The US women's volleyball team has inspired lots of girls in the world. Girls could accomplish anything if you put your mind to it. They have gotten a lot of trophies over the years, but their best trophy has been the one in TOKYO. • • • • •

2 THE LEGEND LIVES ON
By: Heber Juarez, Joel Lopez, Josue Nicolas & Abdel Rahman
Jefferson Middle School “Kobe Bryant was born on August 23, 1978 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.’’ The elder Bryant shifted his entire family so Kobe Bryant spent most of life in Italy. At first Kobe wanted to be a rapper but ended up as a basketball legend. Kobe was named after the famous Kobe beef in japan. Kobe’s father was also a professional basketball player called Joe ‘Jelly Bean’ Bryant. Kobe was the youngest player to start an NBA game. John Cox, Kobes uncle also played in the NBA. In his childhood Kobe was a good soccer player and basketball player. When he moved to Italy he played in an Italian basketball league. January 26, 2020, Kobe boarded a Sikorsky s-76 helicopter that crashed in the lA suburb of Calabasas. Nine people died that day including Kobe and his 13 year old daughter Gianna ¨GIGI¨. Kobe’s last words were “we’ve been through our ups and been through our downs and I think the most important part is that we stay together”. Growing up a die hard Lakers fan, I mean die hard. I knew everything about every player that’s ever played here to be drafted, then traded to this organization and to spend 20 years here. I mean you can’t write something better than this! I'm more proud of the fact that and not about the championships, but for the fact it’s about the down years. When we got to the championships and we did it the right way, all I can do here is just thank you guys. Thank you guys for all the years of support. Thank you guys for all the motivation, Thank you for the inspiration. The funny the thing that had me cracking up all night long is the fact that I go through 20 years of everybody screaming to pass the ball. Haha (”Thank you, I love you all”) Kobe's last game was on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. He's been an inspiration to everyone around the world and the outcome of his hard work is inspiring................Long live kobe!

THE GAME OF SOFTBALL By: Lana Gonzales & Jody Noel - Desert Ridge Academy Softball is a game that's almost the same as baseball, but there is a difference. In softball the ball is thrown underhand. In baseball you throw it over hand. Softball is mostly just for girls while baseballs for boys. Softball is when there's a ball and a bat. The pitcher throws the ball and the person with the bat hits the ball. It all depends on the way you hit the ball whether or not if you can run. If you can? then hope the opposite team does not throw you out or if someone catches your ball. You basically get three tries to round the bases to home as the next batter can keep you moving base to base. That is if your team mate hits the ball as well. Although it is possible to hit a home run. This would certainly get you around the bases in one shot. The pitcher is the person who throws the ball at you. This person is trying to strike you out. Softball was created in CHICAGO ILLINOIS 1887.Softball got the name in 1962. The ball was soft then. The game was first played on thanksgiving day 1887. To Be Continued -

By: Jazlene Gonzales & Gizelle Reyes - Desert Ridge Academy The Lakers in Los Angeles, California is a professional basketball team. They are one of the most successful teams in the NBA. They have won about 17 championships. The Lakers had many of the best players in the NBA on their team. The Los Angeles Lakers held the longest winning streak, over 33 games straight. They also have one of the best known players, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James. Due to a plane crash that had sadly caused Kobe Bryant and his daughter's death . “This franchise has dominated the league for many years and for that reason their fan-based continues to be loyal to the team. Nevertheless, there are still some facts about the Los Angeles Lakers that not all fans know.” As Follows: • The franchise got its start in 1947, when businessman Ben Berger and entertainment mogul Morris Chalfen, both of Minneapolis, purchased the disbanded Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League for $15,000. The team would relocate to Los Angeles before the start of the 1960-61 season. • Breaking down the Lakers’ championships by decades, they won 2 in the 1940s; 3 in the 1950s; 2 in the 1970s; 4 in the 1980s; 1 in the 1990s; 4 in the 2000s; and now 1 in the 2010s. The Lakers’ newest title has tied them with the Boston Celtics for most in league history, with 17. (The Lakers have been in 33 NBA Finals, while the Celtics have been in 21.) • The franchise averted a tragedy on a cold January day in 1960, when the team plane – a converted World War II cargo plane – lost power and was forced to land in an Iowa cornfield. Among the team members on the flight was young superstar Elgin Baylor, who reportedly lay on the floor and said, “If we’re going to crash, I might as go comfortably.” For an account of this harrowing event • The Lakers have a history of getting the better of other teams off the court as well as on the court. The team, for example, acquired Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975 in a trade that sent Dave Meyers, Elmore Smith, Junior Bridgeman and Brian Winters to the Milwaukee Bucks. Also, when Gail Goodrich signed a free-agent deal with the New Orleans Jazz, the Lakers were compensated with multiple draft picks, including New Orleans’ 1979 first-round selection. That turned out to be the top pick in the draft, which L.A. used to select Earvin “Magic” Johnson. And one more: In 1996, the Lakers traded center Vlade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for their draft pick, Kobe Bryant. That same off-season, L.A. signed Shaquille O’Neal in free agency. Jose VITOR LEME The 2021 World Professional Bull Riding (PBR) Championship in Las Vegas brought together the best riders to compete for the championship gold buckle and the prestige of being number 1 bull rider in the world. Defending World Champion Jose Victor Leme, a native of Brazil, arrived as the odds on favorite to repeat as champion and cap off his greatest season ever.
