his Sailing News chronicle will offer news and information about sailing, boating, and safety throughout the summer.

It will provide information and interviews with experienced sailors and it will provide tips on a variety of related topics.

Stormont Yacht Club (SYC) is a selfhelp club operated by its members; it is the only sailing club in the Cornwall area, located in Long Sault, next to the St Lawrence Parkway. Sailing waters include Lake St. Lawrence and the islands of the Long Sault Parkway. Stormont Yacht Club is described as a non-profit club whose main purposes are to provide recreational facilities for its members to actively promote and encourage the

Although the spring of 2019 is arriving slowly, the cold, rainy, and snowy weather doesn’t stop the members of the Stormont Yacht Club from preparing for summer. The sailing season starts with club work parties where members get together to build new docks and clean up the clubhouse. These occasions serve as social events to meet up with old friends and chat about the winter, southern travels, and shovelling record amounts of snow!

The next activity is a big spring cleanup of the clubhouse grounds and equipment.

Members help to launch and secure the docks and anchoring buoys. After all of this work, the Stormont Yacht Club and its members will be ready for boat crane-in L to R: Mark Hutchinson, Brian Clinton, Dan Daigle, Jamie Suffel and happy sailing days ahead.

Spinks, resumed his career a few years later winning twenty - one more fights before finally hanging up his gloves in 2002 at age 52 with a record of 69-6 (44 KOs). Larry Holmes, who is the only fighter to ever stop Muhammad Ali, is widely considered to be one of the top 5 heavyweight boxers of all time. Gerry Cooney: Gerry began his professional boxing career in 1977. In 1981 at Madison Square Gardens, Cooney knocked out former champion Ken Norton in 54 seconds breaking a MSG record that had stood since 1948 for the quickest KO in a main event. This KO set up the most highly anticipated fight in many years with champion Larry Holmes. The fight took place in June of 1982 in a 32,000 seat stadium that had been erected in a parking lot at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

The Holmes vs Cooney fight which still holds the record for live fight attendance in the state of Nevada was shown world-wide on closed circuit and pay-per-view. Holmes won the fight on an 11th round stoppage. Gerry Cooney, with his Irish charm and lethal left hook was

a fan favourite everywhere he went.

Gerry, who retired with a record of 28-3 (24 KOs) is rated #53 by Ring Magazine on its Top 100 Punchers of all-time list. Michael Spinks: Michael won a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics held in Montreal, turned pro in 1977, and won the world light heavyweight title in 1981 in his 17th pro fight against Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. After 10 successful defences, and with little competition left at light heavyweight, Michael moved up to heavyweight winning the title in a close fight with Larry Holmes.

Spinks defended the heavyweight title 3 times before losing it to Mike Tyson in 1988; retiring after that fight with a record of 31-1 (21 KOs).

Ray Mercer: Ray didn’t start boxing until age 23 while he was enlisted in the US army. In 1988 in Seoul Korea, Ray Mercer won Olympic gold in the heavyweight division. Turning professional in 1989, Mercer won the heavyweight title in 1991. After his first title defence Mercer opted not to make a mandatory defence of his title, instead taking a fight against a 42 year old Larry Holmes

with hope of landing a big fight with Evander Holyfield. Things didn’t go as planned, as Holmes handed Mercer his first loss and got the Holyfield fight instead. Ray Mercer continued to fight the top fighters in the world, retiring from boxing in 2008 with a 36-7 (24 KOs) record .After his retirement from boxing, Mercer took an MMA fight against former UFC champion Tim Sylvia, knocking Sylvia out with a single punch nine seconds into the first round. The Boxing for Change main event will feature Dave Murphy vs Sgt. Dave MacLean of the Cornwall Police Services. MacLean’s fellow officer Const. Chris Sullivan will be fighting Chris Littell from the Watertown Fire Dept. There will be several other amateur bouts on the undercard which has been assembled by Jorge Luis of Champs Eastside Boxing.

These four heavyweights fought all of the best in the world from the early 1970s into the new millennium.

Larry Holmes, Gerry Cooney, Michael Spinks, and Ray Mercer fought them all -from Muhammad Ali and George Foreman to Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, and Wladimir Klitschko.

For those of you who are too young to have followed the careers of these fighters or for others where the memories may have been clouded by time here is a short refresher on the four guests of honour. Larry Holmes: Larry began his boxing career in 1973 and won the Heavyweight Championship from Ken Norton in 1978 with a 15 round split decision. (Title fights were 15 rounds at the time). During the next seven years Holmes went on an incredible run, defending his title 20 times against all of the top contenders. Holmes who had retired after losing to Michael

Peewee B Rep Colts Are EOH Champions

I

t has been a dream season for the Peewee B. Rep Colts. At the Eastern Ontario Hockey Championship the Colts played a round-robin and finished second overall, earning them a place in the finals. In the finals they faced off against the first place team, the Stittsville Rams, who had no losses in the tournament.

The game was back and forth, with both goalies having outstanding performances.

The score was 0-0 with less than three minutes remaining in the third period. Colts’ player Keenan Quenneville scored the first goal of the game to make it 1-0. Seconds later, the Rams received a power play and tied the

score at 1-1.

It turned into an overtime game, with the Rams on the power play for most of the overtime. The Colts’ goalie, Colton Rheaume, made some unbelievable saves to keep the Colts in the game. The third overtime period was three-on-three. It was then that Colts defenceman, Drey Thompson, rushed up ice, beat the defender on the outside, and shot and beat the Rams’ goalie to win 2-1.

The Peewee B. Rep Colts claimed the title of 2019 EOH Branch Champions. The Peewee B. Rep Colts finished the Season with a record of 60-13-2.

“Stittsville beat us 7-2 in a previous tournament final so we knew it was going to be a battle and that we were going to have to be solid defensively

if we wanted to win. The boys did a great job at shutting the team down,” said Coach Jean Greggain.

“Rheaume stood on his head long enough to let Captain “Clutch” Drey Thompson, score a big goal for us.

This team worked so hard all year long and deserve the success that they achieved. It has been a magical run that the boys won’t soon forget.

I am proud of each and every one of these guys.”

An Interview with Chris Leonard

BEHIND THE BENCH

L

ocal coach Chris Leonard has been involved in athletics for most of his life. Throughout high school and college, Leonard was involved in football, track, volleyball, basketball, and baseball.

“I have played - been fortunate to be a part of many teams and individual sports competing at the provincial and national level,” says Leonard. “I currently still run track and compete at the national level.”

Not only does Leonard still participate in sport, but he’s also taken to coaching, too.

So, why did Leonard start coaching?

“When I started playing football, it was a coach that helped my family with the funds, so I could play. I have always competed in many sports, but football was my favourite and because of this experience, I returned the favour to the sport by paying it forward and coaching youth football for the last 25 years,” says Leonard.

Currently, Leonard is in his third season with the Cornwall Wildcats as head coach of the Mosquito program for the upcoming 2019 season. Last year, he coached two Tyke teams to the A cup semi-finals and finals in NCAFA. He was also part of the coaching staff for the Pee-Wee B cup champions.

Leonard also had the pleasure of assisting

with the St. Joseph’s Secondary School program leading to the Eastern Ontario semi-finals.

“This year our Mosquito team will be a bit on the young side, but we have a few key vets and a good core group of Tykes moving up. We will be a solid team in the competitive National Capital Amateur Football Association this year for sure,” says Leonard.

Leonard says he has worked with many great coaches in high school and many

coaches within NCAFA who took him under their wing and helped him become a better coach. Of these coaches, Leonard says that the late Rough Rider, Bob Stevens, taught him so much about the various ways to use misdirection to fool a team’s defence.

For Leonard, there are a few things that he loves about coaching.

“First when you see kids progress through the program and play at high levels where you had a small part of creating the love for the game they possess. Second, when you

see a player have that ah-ha moment when things come together, and they start to play with confidence and have success,” says Leonard.

His coaching philosophy focuses on player confidence.

“I’m a big believer of building a player’s confidence, no such thing as ‘I can’t do it,’” says Leonard. “When they start playing with confidence and believing in themselves it is contagious to everyone and that’s when underdogs do amazing things.”

His favourite coaching memory so far took place when the Cornwall Wildcat Tyke 2017 team beat the heavily favoured Kanata Knights team.

“I remember the drive back to Cornwall with Kirby Camplin and we were both saying “how did we pull that off,’” says Leonard.

Every since Leonard began coaching for the Wildcats, he says that Kirby Camplin and the organization made him feel very at home and welcomed.

“I have coached for 25 years with many great clubs in Ottawa such as the Bell Warriors, Nepean Eagles and Myers Riders, but none have had that small community feel and closeness. It’s truly unique,” says Leonard. “Kirby Camplin has built something special here it’s more than a club; it’s a football family!”

Morgan Kane loves football. It’s obvious in the way he talks about the sport. “I enjoy balling out with my teammates on the field and having a good time just as much as pancaking the guy in front of me,” he says.

This is Morgan’s third season with the Wildcats. He took last year off. An offensive linesman, he models himself after Zack Martin of the Dallas Cowboys. “He plays dominantly and doesn’t let anybody push him around,” says Morgan.

Asked about major football influences in his past, Morgan says, “The person that influenced me the most to play football was my head coach, Kirby Camplin. I’ll never forget that day he reached out to 15-year-old me, who knew absolutely nothing about football, and asked me if I’d play for the travelling team in Cornwall, I said ‘yes’ and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. I have him to thank for introducing me to such an amazing sport.”

Morgan dreams of eventually playing pro football. In the meantime, he’s considering a career as a heavy equipment operator.

Jeremy has been playing football with the Cornwall Wildcats for 11 years, most recently as a defensive back. “To this day I am learning new things, which is incredible to think,” he says. “I enjoy every moment playing the sport and enjoy being able to take what I am learning and to give it back to the younger kids. It’s a sport that teaches life lessons.”

Jeremy credits his father and his grandfather with being his athletic role models. He believes his father is largely responsible for helping him become the person and the athlete he is today.

Having earned a spot with St. Francis Xavier University’s football team for the coming fall, Jeremy plans to play for five years and then would like to turn pro. He plans to study human kinetics and would like to be a firefighter after he retires from the game.

Cornwall NAV Centre to Host 2019 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Quebec National Trials

n May 18th, the NAV Centre will be hosting the 2019 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Quebec Trials. This will be the first time the event is held in Cornwall.

Since this event is for the Quebec Trials, this means that athletes from across Quebec will be trying to earn their spot on the national team that will compete later this year in the UAE. While Quebec allows Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, it has not, unlike some provinces, legalized participation in tournaments.

“We are able to host this tournament in Cornwall because of our location.

Unlike some provinces, Quebec has recently put a ban on athletes from participating in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments across the province.

So with Cornwall being so close to Quebec and Montreal, it made perfect sense to host it here in Cornwall at the beautiful NAV Centre May 18th,” says Stephen Patrick.

have many karate black belts in the city but only one Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. So we want people to see what a great sport and martial art it is. We want local people to see why it’s the fastest growing martial art on the planet.”

Event attendees can expect up to 500 athletes that range in age, from young kids to adults.

“Only the Quebec trials for Nationals are closed off for athletes of Quebec, but the tournament is not just for Quebec athletes,” says Patrick. “Seaway Academy will be sending youth and adult athletes so there will be local athletes to get behind and support.”

Patrick says that just like with anything local, it’s nice to see people come out to events and support their own.

Since this is the first time this event will be held in Cornwall, Patrick is encouraging locals to check it out and support their athletes. The event is open to families, and tickets can be purchased at the door: $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

“The most exciting part of this event is watching athletes lay it all on the line. They train hard they want to win. You will see some very exciting match-ups,” says Patrick.

Cornwall Minor Hockey Celebrates 60th Anniversary

ince 1959, the Cornwall Minor Hockey Banquet has been a celebration for players, parents and family, coaches, and executives. This

year 600 guests gathered at the Civic Complex in Salon A, B, and C. Mark Payette has organized the banquet for the past three years.

Athletes from novice to midget and their families came out to celebrate another great season. Food from Spinners Diner, desserts from Cakes and More, Starbucks, and other local companies were served.

“Guests included Patrick Gautier who is a caricature artist who entertained many as he drew cartoonlike portraits of the guest willing to partake. Adreas Pandikiu from Fresh Radio 104.5 guided the event as he did an amazing job as our MC,” shared Payette.

“We were fortunate enough to have Mark Crawford, interim head coach of the Ottawa Senators, stop in and say a few words to the youth as you could hear a pin drop in the room while all were focused on words of encouragement from Mr. Crawford.”

Sponsors included the Cornwall Fire Department, Latreille Electric, Remax, Liuna local 527, Best Buy, and Cornwall Dental Arts.

Three awards for each of the 19 teams were presented. Each division

Patrick Dussault

Local hockey referee and retired OPP officer Patrick Dussault was born in Montreal but has been calling Cornwall home since 1991. He got his start in officiating in 1995 when he was asked to ‘help out’ due to a shortage of adult referees.

The big names Patrick has worked with are impressive. He can count Eddie Shack, Yvan Cournoyer, Yvon Lambert, Dave Williams, Keith Acton, and fellow referee Ron Hoggart among the people with whom he has worked. He has officiated several NHL Alumni games.

Patrick enjoys refereeing at all levels of game.

“I did from novice to midget- some charity NHL Alumni games, exchange games when Sweden came here for the bantam mini-tournament with Seaway AA, and there’s something to like about all of them,” he says.

Jim Riddell’s Sports Talk with Area Seniors Running with John Warner

ohn Warner, born in Cornwall in 1948, became involved in organized sports as a member of the CCVS Raider’s SR. basketball team. John played for Coach Joe Sanborn, whose CCVS teams became a dominant force in Eastern Ontario high school basketball.

After graduating from CCVS, John attended St. Lawrence College before accepting a position in the insurance industry in Toronto. It was in Toronto that John began studying yoga, eventually becoming an instructor and running a studio for four years. Deciding that he wanted to see the world, John travelled to Europe, spending one year living in Greece before returning to Toronto.

Spending the next two years in Toronto, he then moved to England, being employed by an insurance company and teaching yoga. It was during his time in London that John met his wife Shanti, and they are the parents of son Sebastian and daughter Miranda. After spending five years in

London, John and Shanti returned to Cornwall where John began working for his brother Norm’s insurance business. Norm eventually sold the business, and in 1990 John D Warner Insurance Co. was formed.

Almost thirty years later the business is still in the family, being now operated by his son Sebastian.

A community minded individual, John has been a proud member of the Rotary Club since 1982. John, who has been swimming since his twenties, became a member of the Cornwall Sea Lions Masters’ training program.

Starting to run at 56 year of age, he began to participate in triathalons.

Since then John has competed in almost every type of race, - track, duathlons (run, bike, run), track, 5k, 10k, half marathons, and even marathons. John has completed four marathons including one in Big Sur California. Completing marathons in both his fifties and sixties, he has not ruled out tackling the 42 km distance again during his seventies. During

Mrs. B.T -as she is affectionately known at schoolteaches grades 2 and 5 at Williamstown Public where Owen and Olivia attend as students in grade 6 and 3.

Laurie is known to put her heart and soul into her teaching position as well as into the many extracurricular activities she runs.

She coaches the growing volleyball club at school and helps with the track team as well. Laurie speaks most proudly, however, of her latest triumph that marries her love of kids with her passion for downhill skiing – the Williamstown Public ski club! The new club saw Mrs. B.T spend countless hours pouring over each detail of a trip to Mont Rigaud to ensure students enjoyed two exciting skiing. Bruyere-Tyo says the memories created by the students and the positive feedback she received parents and students alike made all the hard work worth it.

When she is not at school, this busy working mom happily ferries her own children around to attend their many sporting events. Owen and Olivia are both accomplished downhill skiers who race competitively each Saturday at Titus Mountain from December until the end of March.

Laurie says Owen eats, breathes, and dreams about skiing. He consistently cracks the top 10 for his own age as well as for skiers many years his senior. Laurie says that young Olivia began skiing at the tender age of three. Olivia displays an aggressive instinct on the hill and gives it her all when she speeds down the slopes against her opponents.

Laurie says that skiing is a way of life for their family, which includes the participation of grandparents and other extended family members. She sees her passion for skiing reflected in the passion her children have for the sport. “It is exhilarating to see that in your kids,” she says.

he 2007 Own the Ice Colts got their Spring Hockey season underway, the last weekend in March, with a trip to Rockland, to participate in the CIH Voyageurs Cup.

The weekend started off with goaltenders Tristan Paquette and Colton Rheaume both registering shutouts in consecutive wins over the Ottawa Junior Senators, 6-0, and the CIH Voyageurs, 1-0, which secured the team a berth in the semi-finals.

Saturday afternoon’s action saw the boys fall behind 3-1 to a good skating Eastern Ontario Nationals squad, with some undisciplined play that saw several Colts’ players spending time in the penalty box.

They cued the comeback with only 1:46 remaining when the Colts finally had a turn on the power play. With their own net empty in favour of an extra attacker, the Colts swarmed the net until Ryan Cunning finally banged one in to draw within a goal.

With only 46 seconds remaining, and Paquette back in the net, the Colts were able to get the puck deep in the offensive zone, put the extra man out again, with Cunning banging in another lose puck to even the score, which is how it ended. Although the Colts had already secured a semifinal berth, the finish to their third game certainly gave them momentum heading into Sunday’s action.

Sunday started off with another match up against the Nationals in the semi-final, which was controlled off the puck drop by a very determined Colts team. The game featured a tenacious Colts back check and an overall solid team effort in cruising to a 4-1 win.

Building on the momentum of the morning’s victory, once again the Colts came out fast and hard, outskating their opponents and winning most of the key battles for the puck early on. After taking a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Colts gave up a single marker before adding two more goals in what end up being a solid 4-1 victory, claiming the 2019 Voyageurs Cup. Liam Davis paced the attack with a pair of goals and Dixon ripped a laser beam top shelf that provided all the insurance the Cup champs needed.

The Colts’ goaltending duo of Paquette and Rheaume shared the honours for the tournament’s top netminder, based on their combined goals against average. Kristopher Richards took home the honour of being named the top defenceman of the tournament, narrowly beating out

fellow twin tower, Brock Cousineau.

The Colts’ defence core also included steady performances from Warren Lalonde and Bennett Harty.

Up front, Sydney Benoit, Lorenzo Rand, and Matteo Dixon shared duties playing in the middle, while tenacious two-way play was provided on the left side by Maxime Dube and Ryan Racine. Maxime Bazinet, Reid Cunning, and Liam Davis patrolled the right side of the ice and made significant contributions in all areas.

Head Coach Brad Robertson liked what he saw from his group and hopes to build on their success as they look forward to four more tournaments in just the next five weeks. ustin Lalancette was born and raised in Cornwall. He graduated in the business field at the local college and is now pursuing a career in the sales world, while also being able to share his love and passion for automotive products.

“I have been with the great team at Seaway GM for over two and a half years.

E

very year or so, we go to Lake Placid for a few days of golf or just a weekend to sit and relax.

Every time I am there, I take five minutes to visit a little cemetery just south of the town. The reason I go to St. Agnes is to visit a mausoleum that marks the final resting place of an icon from my youth.

You see, I am a sentimental sort, always have been. So, at age 14, when the Philadelphia Flyers introduced me to an old lady; in a seemingly bad dress, singing God Bless America before Flyers games at the Spectrum, I was instantly hooked.

I wasn’t a Flyers fan, but I was a fan of the fact that when Kate Smith sang before Flyers ‘must win’ games, they won a high percentage of the time. She only sang live four times during the Flyers’ hey day and was 3-0-1. Over the years on video and more recently in a magical duet with present anthem singer Lauren Hart she is 101-31 -

Kate Smith was an iconic singer from the thirties and war years. But in 1931, she sang a racially lyrical song, that until recently went undetected for 80 years. Since the song was recently uncovered, the Flyers have removed the statue of Kate Smith from the arena grounds and will no longer use her duet rendition of God Bless America before games. In this era, they had, too.

The New York Yankees have done the same, as they used Smith’s God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch at Yankee Stadium.

Like when the theme of Hockey Night in Canada was eliminated from HNIC, this hurts to think the tingles I got just watching Smith belt out the GBA anthem, are now in my memory.

Our times are just waiting for the new skeleton to emerge from the next closet, I was quickly reminded — It matters not how far back something happened, there were people that lived through that “how far back time” that were affected just the same.

I’ll still visit Kate Smith when in Lake Placid. I hope it doesn’t make me a racist, it will simply be for the reasons I went in the first place, those memories I have, that won’t go away.

A Homage To Our Fathers

O

ccasionally, when the wind takes us where we don’t want to go and we are upset that we might scrape the bottom, we show a not so nice side of ourselves and people close to us remind us of the famous phrase: “You are just like your father”. We then blame our hot temper on our genetic patrimony, and I would like to honour our fathers who transmitted their sailing passion.

If some traits of our personality are inherited, what about other things and activities such as sailing or fishing our parents liked and as we are exposed to them, we turned to like them as well.

Could it be a genetic inheritance, or is it because that particular skill and attraction for an activity evolves and develops under a parent’s nurturing wing? For example, learning how to sail is knowledge base which can be learned in manuals and on you-tube, but only up to a certain point. Does it take more than textbooks to develop the passion for sailing, like parental nurturing and coaching?

In traditional families established

along coastal areas, sailing and fishing were the domain of fathers and sons. Sailing and fishing abilities were learned on deck and knowledge in navigation and reading the weather was taught by a senior sailor, somebody who knew “the how”. There was an element of handing down from the older person to the offspring who would be able to perpetuate the trade, earn a living and more importantly, to come back to port safe and sound.

I think that a similar approach still exist today, whether it be recreational sailing or fishing. Fathers still take their sons and daughters on the water with them and unconsciously, they nurture an emerging passion in the hearts of their off springs. Learning to tame the sea, battle strong waves, harness the wind, next to a father who seems, in the eyes of a young child, very much in control of the situation, must be quite exhilarating and it must be a good thing to do. When the young child sees the joy in his father’s eyes, his grin after a successful tack, he probably think that his mastery of the sea, which gives his father a strong sense of power, has to be the way to

Continued from page 16 father. He remembers his father, like many fathers who push their children to go further, telling him that “you have nothing if you don’t try”. His father inspired his passion and taught him of always push the limits farther and go beyond what he never thought would be possible.

I was humbled and puzzled by this story and when I returned home I looked around my friends from the sailing club and began asking them how they began sailing. They are passionate skippers and I was curious to find out what made them became this way. They were eager to tell me their stories about their youth and began recalling stories of sailing and fishing with their fathers.

I was amused at their descriptions of makeshift sails done with whatever they could find. Others such as our friend Clare Jordan who grew up on the shores of lake Ontario displayed ingenuity: he and is brother used to take their mother’s sheets that were hanging on the clothes line to make as sails in order to give more speed to their small rowboat.

They like to discover the world, see what is going on in the water, look under the hull, look at the reflection of the moon on the water, be frightened as they realized how dark the sky can be at night and how terrifying an agitated black sea can be when your little boat is all by itself on a big lake. They like to feel the wind in their face.

They like to follow the motion of the boat bouncing between waves and the waves splashing the hull. They need to measure themselves against something bigger than themselves. It becomes especially inspiring when they see their fathers, mothers, and uncles successfully measuring up to the challenge and winning the battle.

This is what inspires young children and changes their perception of their parents to that of role models.

The Long Ride to a Championship

t takes a lot of time, dedication, and love to play any sport at a highly competitive level. Just ask Ella Dickson and Maude Millette.

These two young ladies play for the provincial champion peewee AA Nepean Wildcats, the number one girls’ peewee AA team in the province. This season, the Wildcats posted an impressive 61-1-4 record.

Ella and Maude, who are both 12 years old, make the trip to Nepean 5 or 6 times per week during the hockey season. Their parents split the driving duties according to who’s available. Since the team plays in the local A-AA loop, travelling also includes stops in Ottawa, Kanata, and here in Cornwall. When they won the provincial title, they were in Brampton. It was an impressive

tourney for the Wildcats; they went 7-0 and gave up a single goal.

Over the years, Ella, who plays defence, and Maude, a forward, have had plenty of time to develop a strong friendship. The girls won a bronze medal in 2016 while playing for the Cornwall Typhoons under Ian Laplante, and silver in 2017, again with the Typhoons but this time under Erin Seymour. The gold with the Wildcats this year completes their collection.

“Maude and I made a lot of sacrifices to play in Nepean this year,” says Ella, “but all of the car rides and hard work paid off in the end as we won 6 tournaments, and we won gold at provincials.”

Cornwall Novice Team Takes Gold after Exciting Championship Game

e expect hockey Games to be exciting to watch but two Cornwall Girls Hockey Association teams took it to the next level. Both local Novice Blue and Grey Teams played in the Ottawa District Women’s Hockey Association B Novice House Division Championship Game on Sunday March 31. Both teams were evenly matched and all players performed as you would expect in a Championship Game but in the end it came down to being an evenly matched “Goalies’ Game”. Both goalies brought their best skills and talent to the rink that day.

The play was fast, the goalies were unbeatable. By the end of regulation play they were tied 0-0. Once in overtime play, Grey Typhoon’s goalie, Arianna Seguin and Blue Typhoon’s goalie, Fayth Cooper both stopped every shot, keeping their teams alive. Overtime ended once again in a 0-0 tie.

Teams then moved to a shoot out. A stressful best two out of three. First Grey

Joe McNamara Named Cycle Club President he says he likes most about cycling.

L

ocal cycle enthusiast Joe McNamara was recently named the Cycle Club president after volunteering for the role at the AGM in 2018.

McNamara has been cycling for quite some time. Since he was 15, in fact.

“It was a progression from riding banana seat bikes when I was a kid then moving to multispeed bikes as a teen. A friend of mine was also interested so we would just ride out to the rural communities and have fun,” says McNamara. “I caught the racing bug and competed as a Junior and Senior III on the road and then Sport and Expert on mountain bikes. I also ran track and x-country in high school, so it was a great cross-over sport for the summer.”

According to McNamara, cycling is a sport that also serves a purpose. This is one of the things

“What other sport acts as transportation and has such a social aspect to it? I also love the low impact,” says McNamara. “If you are consistent at riding, you can get really fit in little time and have fun at the same time.”

When McNamara moved to the Cornwall area in 1991, he didn’t have a car.

“I rode everywhere on my bike and found the club setting up for a time trial in St. Andrews. They were very welcoming, and I did my first club TT right there and met some people that I am still friends with today.” says McNamara. “I also didn’t know how to get back to Cornwall as I was new to the area and was told, ‘all roads lead to Cornwall.’”

Now, McNamara is looking forward to a new kind of role with the cycle club.

This segment of cycling is growing and is less competitive and on roads with little to no traffic. It really allows you to relax and enjoy the ride.”

A Look Back with the Wheeler Brothers from St. Andrews

T

he Wheeler brothers from St. Andrews are quite well known in the sporting world for their abilities in hockey and lacrosse. Growing up on the family farm located just outside the village, Tony, Gabe, Garrett, John Morris, Terry, and Kevin began their education at St. Andrews Convent School, which was across the street from the church. Sister Ermalinda Sloan, a grammar specialist and teacher at the school was a real hockey enthusiast and always ensured that there was a rink with boards for the students to develop their skills. The brothers had learned to skate on the nearby Raisin River, later using it as a means to improve their skating skills for hockey.

Kevin recalls skating west to Harrison’s Corners in the morning and east to Martintown in the afternoon, saying that if there was a bit of snow on the ice you were then able to check your stride. The two oldest brothers Gabe and Tony began playing lacrosse in Cornwall’s OCOT (Our Citizens of Tomorrow) league in 1934. In 1935 the villages of St. Andrews and Wales joined forces and entered a team in the Cornwall league. That team remained intact through bantam, midget, juvenile, and junior, winning several championships along the way.

In 1941 both Gabe and Tony made the Cornwall Senior lacrosse team which played in the Quebec league.

In 1942 with WWII underway both Gabe and Tony joined the RCAF with Gabe being a pilot and Tony an airframe mechanic. Gabe was later sent overseas to a British base on the Shetland Islands where he trained pilots. Tony was stationed in St. Thomas ON, and was able to get home on a more frequent basis than Gabe. On one trip home Tony took an unauthorized extension of his leave to re-join his Cornwall team for a big game and was given six weeks of KP duty upon his return to St. Thomas.

In 1946 the war was over and the brothers were back in Cornwall playing for their old team. During the next six years they re-wrote the record book in the Quebec league with Gabe winning the scoring title five times and Tony once. Gabe and Tony both played some

lacrosse with an army team in Cornwall which included Punch Imlach, who went on to be coach and general manager of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres. Imlach was enlisted in the army at the time and was beginning his coaching career with the Cornwall Army hockey team.

Gabe and Tony are in the Cornwall and the South Stormont Sports Halls of Fame for lacrosse. John Morris played Lacrosse in Cornwall and for a few years in Alexandria with a team consisting mostly of players from Ottawa which included former Ottawa Rough Rider Lally Lalonde. John Morris excelled in hockey being a fan favourite for many years, playing in the Longue Sault Senior League at the Mille Roches Arena. John Morris was known for his blistering slap shot and for wearing regular leather work gloves instead of hockey gloves, saying that they gave him a better feel for the stick. Terry and Kevin played hockey for their school team before moving up to the Longue Sault Senior league at a young age. Kevin joined the St Andrews team at 17 yrs. of age weighing 110 lbs. Both Kevin and Terry played lacrosse locally honing their skills locally, and then playing juvenile before going straight to the senior league. Terry had gone to St Michael’s College and was playing lacrosse for the school team which played in the Toronto University department league.

Terry was the biggest of the Wheelers, played the game hard, and it was no fun to go into a corner with him. Terry had developed an intense rivalry with Alan Eagleson, having many one to one battles with him on the lacrosse field. Eagleson, who was studying law at the time, would go on to fame, and later infamy as a hockey agent and executive director of the NHL Players Association.

Kevin, who was scheduled to attend McGill University, was convinced

by Terry to switch to St. Michael’s, saying that “With you here we can win the league”. Kevin switched to St. Michael’s and met Eagleson’s team in a best two out of three series for the league championship. Eagleson, who was also the coach, had his team made up of phys ed majors, including future lacrosse hall of famer Bobby

A Family That Skis Together, Stays Together

ll winter long, there’s one place you will be sure to find the Bruyere-Tyo family—on the ski hill. Laurie Bruyere-Tyo and her children Owen and Oliva are avid skiers. Laurie’s brother Dave Bruyere, and his wife Stacey, also bring their two children Madison and Mason to Titus Mountain. The family weekend trips wouldn’t be

“We are able to participate in a great outdoor sport with our children and at the same time, we are creating memories that will last a lifetime,” said Laurie. “My hope is that we have created lifelong skiers and that when our children are grown up with children of their own, my brother and I will be out there skiing with not only our own grown children, but with their children— our grandchildren—as well.”

Sea Lions’ Swimmers: Monica Brown and Alexandros Haramis

I

t is not easy for a high school student to maintain an honour roll average, especially one who swims for nearly 10 hours every week. For Sea Lions swimmers Monica Brown and Alexandros Haramis, maintaining their grades and a rigorous swimming schedule is a part of everyday life.

Monica, 15, has a 93 per cent average in school, is part of her school’s art club and photography club, and was elected to student government last year to represent her grade. She balances all of these activities through organization and planning ahead, so that she’s always ready for her morning swim practices.

Monica has been swimming with the Sea Lions for six years.

“One thing that I really enjoy about being on the swim team is the time I get to spend with my friends,” shared Monica. “Most of the team are all really close to each other and we’ve all been friends for a really long time,

so it’s nice to be able to see them as often as I do.”

One of these teammates is Alexandros Haramis, 15, who has been a Sea Lion for seven years.

Alexandros is involved in his church, takes music lessons once a week, and helps at his father’s pharmacy. He manages his busy schedule by being strict about the amount of time he has to complete tasks, like homework.

“What I love most about swimming with the Sea Lions is the social aspect of it and seeing the progress I make in the pool, throughout the year,” said Alexandros. “Many of my best friends are the ones I see at the pool.

I really appreciate being surrounded by people who are just as busy as I am and to whom I can relate. I find it fun to see how I get faster from the beginning of the season to the end and how I can compare results with others on the team.”

Spotlight on Golf: Alex McAllister at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club

T

o say that retired high school teacher Alex McAllister has some golf experience is an understatement. He’s been a member of the Cornwall Golf and Country Club for 59 years, and he’s going strong: he figures he gets on the links 22 times in a month, or up to 120 times per season. That’s plenty enough to satisfy the most avid sportsmen.

He says that what he likes best about golfing is the good exercise, the recreation, and the competition,

regardless of age. “The company of old friends, a place to meet new people, and a place to enjoy social functions all year,” are the things Alex says he enjoys when asked what he likes about the CGCC in particular.

When it comes to scoring a round, Alex posts some impressive numbers.

His best round off the blue tees is a 67, while he’s had a 65-shot round from the reds. His favourite golfing memory is attending a practice round at the home of the Masters in Augusta, Georgia.

“In my younger years, I enjoyed most sports. Golf, tennis, hockey, basketball, football, swimming, softball, track and field…” Alex says. “Now, in my eighties, I spend most of my time golfing, reading, playing cards, and travelling.”

n July 6th, the Cornwall Multisport Club Kids’ Day Run will be taking place, with BIB pickup starting at 9:30 a.m. This is an event you certainly don’t want to miss.

This is an annual event held for kids under sixteen years of age at the Lamoureux Park Band shell, where they run in a distance designed for one of four age groups. There is a pace bunny to lead the way and up to 20 volunteers to encourage, guide, and keep the kids safe on the path.

Each participant receives a medal and special awards are given to first place boy and girl in each age group.

University was an absolute blast and such a rich experience. It’s because of my years at Ottawa U that I am where I am today.

I would highly recommend to any junior player to aim for the scholarship route - it’s important to remember your hockeyplaying days are limited, but education is limitless.”

Nowadays, working and with a family of his own, Nick admits not having much time for playing hockey. “I haven’t laced up my skates to play in 15 years. I do spend a lot of time around the game though. I have three sons who play hockey and

certainly enjoy it. We spent the last 5 years in Dubai where I helped coach their team, when I wasn’t travelling.”

As a hockey player turned hockey dad, Brunet shares some perspective and advice.

“Hockey is such a great game, a really fun game. It’s important for parents to remember this and to let their kids love the game without the pressures that are often put on them. Parents need to remember that it’s not about “making it to the Big Leagues” - it’s about the relationships their kids will build during the journey and how they will apply the lessons learned along the way to the rest of their life.”

2007 Dubé Law Colts Win Again!

he 2007 Colts left Gatineau with more hardware on The April 26th weekend after a thrilling 4-3 OT win over the MaxTech Raccoons in the final of the Outaouais Express AAA tournament held in Gatineau.

The Colts’ squad went a perfect 6-0 over the weekend, once again proving to be a very difficult team to play against. A stingy defence, solid goaltending, and great back-

checking from their forwards set the tone early Friday morning in a come from behind 5-4 thriller over the Wolfpack.

Timely goal scoring came when needed, and a total team effort equalled success for the group. This time around it was Twin Tower Brock Cousineau who lit the lamp in OT with a bomb from the high slot to claim the win. Well the easy answer would be Tampa Bay, there’s no reason not to pick them. The Lightning dominated the regular season winning the President’s trophy by a whopping 21 points. No other team really challenged them this year. That being said, the President’s trophy winner has only won the Stanley cup eight times in the past thirty years. Tampa’s path to the Stanley Cup goes through Columbus, then either Toronto or Boston. That’s an intimidating task, even for a team as talented as Tampa. My prediction is a repeat of last year’s final between Washington and Las Vegas. As we observed last year, the regular season doesn’t always tell the tale when it comes to playoff success. Both these teams know what it takes to make it to the finals and they are well positioned to do it again. This time, I believe that there will Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports Newspaper be reversal in the final result with the Golden Knights prevailing over the Capitals. By the time the finals arrive, the Capitals will run out of gas and Ovechkin will pay for his summer of partying. If they get good goaltending from Fleury, they should bring the championship to Sin City.

Hockey fans are being treated to fast, hard hitting, on the edge of your seat hockey this year.

The talent, the speed, the stamina of the players continually amazes me from year to year. In my opinion, hockey athletes are among the most conditioned, toughest, talented athletes in the world (with lacrosse athletes a close second). The second round is upon us with surprising matchups.

Dallas - St Louis, Colorado - San Jose, Boston - Columbus and the Islanders face off against (Washington - Carolina).

The “Odds Makers” currently have the Islanders at the top of their list with Columbus and St Louis at numbers 2 & 3. Early in the season I made a prediction that San Jose, Dallas, and Carolina were going to be top teams to beat this year and all three teams are still in contention. The field Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports Newspaper is wide open and it’s going to come down to heart, stamina, digging deep for that extra overdrive gear and staying healthy because teams are all equally talented, fast and determined.

- The first round of the NHL playoffs is now over and there have been a few surprises with the Lightening and Penguins getting swept by The Blue Jackets and Islanders respectively and the Flames being beaten in five by the Avalanche. With the parity in today’s NHL everything will have to go right for whichever team is to eventually emerge with the Stanley Cup. I like the St. Louis Blues’ chances of being that team as they have been playing well since Craig Berube took over as head coach in November. The Blues have been getting solid goaltending from Jordan Binnington, who after being called up from their AHL affiliate in San Antonio in early December, went 24Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports Newspaper 5-1 with a 9.27 save percentage during the regular season. The Blues are a strong well-balanced team that has been in playoff mode since well before the end of the regular season, eliminating the Winnipeg Jets in 6, and have what it takes to win the Stanley Cup. I think that the 3 characteristics that are most important for a coach to have are leadership, kindness, and patience. I think leadership is important because the coach needs to be able to encourage players to play to their full potential and to guide the team towards a common goal. I like when my c o a c h takes time to explain the drills to me and explain why we are doing something because it helps me and the team understand better. To me, kindness plays a big role too because the players respond better to someone who is nice and kind during practices and games. I also feel that patience is important because everyone learns differently and if the coach is impatient and not willing to get through to everyone we won’t want to play and it will be hard to learn.

Karate Coaching

Many, if not most karate clubs have some form of instructor development program where senior coloured belts are given certain responsibilities and then mentored by a senior instructor. This often involves several hours of classroom instruction, followed by several weeks of practical assignments that take place during regular karate class. During the classroom portion all aspects and components of a karate class are covered. These include safety, proper warm-ups, and different types of stretching, methods of learning, instructing kid’s class, and Instructor requirements.

At Seaway Karate the classroom portion requires Level 1 Karate coaching of six hours before the practical assignments begin. The practical component usually starts with teaching basic techniques to a few beginners while being monitored to ensure that he/she is communicating clearly and properly demonstrating the skills. This allows the student time to develop communication skills and to get comfortable with a small group. The next step is to design and lead a 15 minute functional warm-up using both anaerobic and aerobic type exercises. This section is followed by taking the class through the various kicks, punches, strikes, and techniques.

Most karate clubs have an assortment of striking pads including shields, focus mitts, Thai pads, paddle pads, and blockers. There is a safe and proper way to hold each of these pads and it is important that the holder adheres to this at all times. Leading the class with kata is the final requirement for a Level 1 Karate Coaching certificate. Speciality training which involved grading / tournament preparation, pressure points, and weapon training is handled by the senior instructors and not covered at this level of Karate Coaching.

This type of program helps to develop the people skills and qualities to become a good instructor, - a few of these are: 1) Respect, - respect for students, parents, spouses, and fellow instructors.

2) Be a role model, always using ethical behaviour 3) Develops a passion for instructing.

4) Develops motivational skills – learns how to create an environment where the student wants to succeed.

5) Learns how to create an environment that allows students to shine 6) Develops patience – some students learn very quickly, others may take much longer.

Completing a coaching course helps to enhance the skills required to being a black belt. To earn a Shodan certificate (1st degree black belt) the candidate must demonstrate a required level of proficiency in front of a grading board. This requires a considerable amount of skill and knowledge, but it doesn’t guarantee the ability to be able to pass it down to the next generation of karate students. Many adults have work or sport related life skills in teaching, coaching, or training that will enhance karate development. For many of the younger students, there is little or no history to draw from making this type of program very important. The qualities that these youngsters will develop enroute to becoming a good instructor will go far beyond the sport of karate.

Little Rocks Youth Program Celebrates 25 Years

T

he Cornwall Curling Centre’s Youth Program rocks the Cornwall Curling Centre every Sunday Morning. First introduced by Lynn Macdonell and Pat Taylor the program has been in existence since 1994 and recently celebrated its 25th year.

Youth between the ages of 7 and 18 participate in the program.

The curlers learn a variety of skills including proper delivery, sweeping techniques, game strategy, as well as curling etiquette and sportsmanship.

The skills taught are part of the curriculum developed by the Ontario Curling Association’s skills program.

Youth curlers are taught by qualified coaches and the ratio of coach to student is kept as small as possible.

Many of Canada’s professional curler’s got their start in Little Rock / Youth programs. Cornwall’s Mathew Camm who plays third for Team John Epping and Canadian Olympian Rachel Homan began their careers in the Youth program at the Navan Curling Club.

Brandi Wright whose son Cameron is enrolled in the program is the current Youth Program Coordinator.

The program is well received by its youth curlers. Maddy Henderson (see picture attached) has been a member of the youth program for 7 years. When asked, she remarked her favourite part of the program was the skill instruction and game play. With the sport of curling having a higher profile than ever before due to the Winter Olympics, World Curling Tour, and the Grand Slam of Curling there are opportunities to learn and grow in the sport, and our youth to have aspirations of being successful at the elite level. The Cornwall Curling Centre’s Youth program is thriving and it continues to be an essential element in the Centre’s success. Registration takes place in late September. The Day Ladies held their year end banquet and AGM to celebrate the end of the curling season. A number of awards were presented. An eight ender pin was presented to the team skipped by Diane Lemire, 3rd Joanne Patenaude, 2nd Pam Swinden. The game was played on Dec. 6th, 2018.

Draw 1 winners were Ann Bruni, Dawn McKeown, Des McLeod, Lois McCosham, and Gloria Irvine.

Draw 2 winners were Cathy Poirier, Des McLeod, Dawn McKeown, Margie Lockhart, and Karen Baker.

Draw 3 winners were Val Darling, Joy Clinton, Leigh MacDonald, Irene Goodwin, and Francine Patenaude.

Draw 4 winners were Micheline Lacasse, Carol Tyrell, Lois McCosham, and Annette Leger.

Rookie of the year was awarded to Amy Cruikshank. The “Darlene Aitken” spirit of curling was awarded to Pam Swinden.

During the banquet $541 was raised for the Corus Caring Radiothon and the Cornwall Community Hospital.

Congratulations to the St. Joes’ Panthers curling team coached by Sylvain Girard. The team finished 2nd behind powerhouse North Dundas Devils and advanced to EOSSA where the team won a Bronze medal.

Members of the team were Rhiannon Beckstead (skip) Anna MacFarlane (3rd) Kyra Morris (2nd) Kelty McCooey (lead).

The final senior draw with 27 teams participating got underway Monday March 25th. The top 12 teams in the final standings made the playoffs which were held on Friday April 5th . The team skipped

Don Orton was honoured with a lifetime honorary membership.

The closing bonspiel for evening curlers was held between Monday April 8th and Friday April 12th with 22 teams participating. The team winning the “A” division was skipped by Jenn Baker with Denis Piche playing 3rd. Filling in at the 2nd position was Anne Leduc with Danny Hand playing lead. (see picture attached) The “B” Flight was won by the team skipped by Kevin Baker with Helen Adams filling in at 3rd. The 2nd position was played by Brian Long, with Marjorie Boileau throwing lead stones.

The “C” flight was won by Mike Villeneuve with Tom Heard playing 3rd. The front end positions were filled by Sue Hymus and Kim Joncas.

The “D” division was won by the team skipped by Club President John Rattray. John Bissonette played

Marleau filling the front end.

The “A” consolation was won by the team of Denis Henderson, Theresa McAnnany, Paul Rochon, and Terry Hart.

The year end awards for evening curlers were presented at the closing bonspiel dinner with the team of Matt Dupuis, Charles Wert, Terry Litchy, and Jonathon King being selected Curlers of the Year. This team represented the Cornwall Curling Centre and won the Travellers Provincial championship and proceeded to win a bronze at the Canadian Championships. The Spirit of Curling was presented to Guy Willis. Member of the year was presented to Bob Davis. Youth Curler of the Year was won by Nick Guindon.

This brings to a close Tee Line Talk for this curling season. Looking forward to next year with the Shorty Jenkins Classic taking place in September at the Curling Centre bringing in a number of the elite men’s and ladies teams. The Ontario Provincials for both men and ladies will take place in January 2020 at the Cornwall Civic complex. Cornwall Curling Centres registration will take place in early September. The club

Issue #78 May 2019 organized a couple of a learn to curl programs early in the curling season where non-curlers were able to learn the sport from qualified instructors.

This season the club also organized a couple of “Bring a friend to curl” afternoons to introduce the sport to newcomers. Both of these initiatives were very successful. I’m sure the club will do both again next season.

Watch the Cornwall Curling Centres website for details. With the late spring we are experiencing it could be a few more weeks before we tee it up but when you do hit them long and straight. See you in the fall.

Main Bout Features Murphy vs MacLean at CTC Boxing for Change

n Saturday June 1st, Dave Murphy will climb back into the boxing ring, putting his undefeated amateur record on the line in an effort to raise money for local causes. In 2017 Dave won a close decision over Corus morning show host Dan Allaire in the main event of ‘The Children’s Treatment Centre Boxing for Change’ gala. Former top heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney was the guest of honour that evening, the crowd was at full capacity, and $40,000 was raised.

At the Cornwall Civic Complex on June 1st Dave’s opponent in the main event of the evening will be Sgt. Dave MacLean of the Cornwall Police Services. The fight is not an exhibition match, but an amateur bout that has been sanctioned by Boxing Ontario. There will also be a Police Officer vs Firefighter bout taking place just before the main event, with Const. Chris Sullivan of the Cornwall Police Services matched against Chris Littell of the Watertown NY

There is no need for Murphy and MacLean to spar with each other before their fight as heavyweights Chris Sullivan, Matt Geneau, and Andrew Kennedy provide quality sparring; and they each have the opportunity get in the ring with Tony Luis and learn from him.

With lifetime bragging rights at stake, both Murphy and MacLean are taking this fight seriously.

Member of the Month Bill Swinden

Bill was born in Toronto and grew up in Montreal.”

His dad was the Marketing Manager of the Helene Curtis company. Bill attended Beaconsfield High School and McGill University where he graduated with a degree in Physical Education. He played football and basketball during this time then rugby after his graduation. He then decided to travel the world. His exciting adventures lasted 4 years. In Australia he played football with Aussie rules. When he was teaching in Lahr, Germany, he met another teacher who would be his future wife, Pam Fox, from Cornwall. They married and settled in Cornwall to

teach and raise their family.

Bill taught Phys. Ed. at both St. Lawrence and C.C.V.S. high schools. During the summer months they travelled a lot as a family. Bill coached all three of his sons in their sports. David continued in basketball at Brock University in St. Catharines; Jamie played Division 1 Rugby in Calgary; and Bruce played both football and rugby at Bishop’s University. Bill retired in 2009 after teaching and coaching for twenty years.

Since his retirement Bill said he is playing “serious hockey” on the 65+ Men’s Team who recently competed at the OSGA Provincial Championship in Huntsville. Bill enjoys seasonal sports like tennis, biking, kayaking, softball, cross country, and downhill skiing. He stays active also by refereeing (70 games since September) the travelling teams for high school basketball. Bill is the Secretary of the Cornwall Lion’s Club. Bill has continued his interest in tennis by playing in the OSGA District 8 Mixed Doubles for many years. Now he is the convenor for this event held in June in Cornwall. Bill is managing to enjoy his retirement years by always keeping active in OSGA District 8 summer and winter events.

appy just about summer, In the Zone readers!!! It is about time we started seeing this beautiful California weather throughout the country (sorry, mean joke).

I was recently sitting in the sun with one of my business partners and it struck me that since we had been working together many things had happened for the better of us both and the company.

I want everyone work through this activity with me. List out your 3 major goals for the rest of this year. Whatever they may be it does not matter, but make them specific. Be as detailed and to the point as you can be. Think about them and list them out. They don’t need to be in any particular order.

When you have those 3 goals; I now want you to list out the 3 most influential people in your life. Again be specific and make sure you focus on who YOU see as those people, not who you

think you should or who people have told you but what you truly believe.

Lastly I want you to list the top 3 people you spend the most time with on a day-to-day basis.

Now that you have these listed I want you to analyze something.

- Do they match up? Do the people you spend the most time with, ultimately give you the best influence that will, in the end, help lead you to your goals?

Hi JR, I have a goaltending question. Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss recently won the William Jennings’ trophy for fewest goals against in the NHL. Both goalies were not considered as number 1 puck stoppers. What do you feel contributed to their successful season?

That’s a great question. Many goalies have spectacular bounce back years but these two completely rededicated themselves to their sport (job) and position. They worked extremely close with their goalie coach Mitch Korn all summer, they saw sport psychologists to help free and clear their mind, and just simplified their games and life. The biggest thing I’ve heard them say is the game is “fun” again. That is proof in the pudding; when the game isn’t fun you’re not going to have success.

Cornwall Plays Host to 2019 Senior National Broomball Championships

roomball. It might just be one of Eastern Ontario’s best-kept secrets, given the number of people that visited the Benson Centre between April 10 and 13. That’s when the Vipers, an Elite level women’s team whose home rink is in Finch, hosted the 2019 Senior National Broomball Championships.

“Cornwall is a great host,” says Pascale Gauthier, Director of High Performance for the Canadian Broomball Federation. “It’s pretty close to everything and the people are nice, and they’re friendly.”

According to Gauthier, broomball in Canada is experiencing a resurgence, with over 50 000 registered players, and it’s especially popular in rural communities

The Senior Championship included three divisions: Elite Men, Elite Women, and Mixed. While the Elite divisions are both full contact, the Mixed division, which requires teams to field (or ice) three men and three women on every line, isn’t. It’s interesting to note that broomball is one of the only team sports that allows full contact for ladies.

While “senior” is technically for anyone over 18, according to tournament organizers several of the teams included some junior players, and athletes as young as sixteen saw ice time during the event, as did some 55-year-olds. Six teams competed at the Mixed level, while the Elite Men’s and Elite Women’s packed the Benson Centre over four divisions saw competition from days of competition. seven and six sides each. From here, Zappitelli impressively played semi-pro football in Italy for the Bergamo Lions in 2006. Not only did Zappitelli excel at football, but he also played junior Hockey for Le Drakkar de Baie Comeau. He experienced OFSAA for shot put in track and field and also played badminton, baseball, and field lacrosse for St. Matthews High School. It’s safe to say, Zappitelli is extremely athletically inclined.

he wait is over; on Saturday April 15th at the Civic Complex local sports fans will finally have the opportunity to see Tony Luis fight in his hometown. Luis, a lifelong resident of Cornwall has had great success in the sport of boxing. As an amateur he was a seven time Provincial Champion, defeated ten Canadian Champions, and was awarded as the Top Fighter at the Four Nations Cup where he defeated the champions from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

Surprisingly, Zappitelli’s favourite sport to play is badminton. However, Zappitelli’s coaching experience kicked off in university with football as a Powder Puff coach. The Powder Puffs were a girl’s football team which played in the snow. He also coached community football and shot put at a local school in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

Because of this I try to coach my son whenever I can,” says Zappitelli. “I also would not be the person I am right now or had the opportunities I had in my life if it wasn’t for all of the coaches that gave up their time to help me. I was very lucky to have caring coaches in high school that constantly pushed me to be better. This is one of the reasons I like to coach; to give my athletes the opportunities that I had growing up because I know how beneficial it was in my life.”

Zappitelli’s current seasons are going well.

The Wildcats have been working hard for their first exhibition coming at the end of April.

The gymnastics team will be competing in EOSSA followed by OFSAA mid April. For badminton, they have their SDG tournament coming up in a few weeks time.

hirty-four-year-old Shawn Maloney was born and raised in the Cornwall area. Maloney has a passion for athletics, which he participates in despite his blinding eye disease known as retinitis pigmentosa.

“It is a condition I was diagnosed with when I was 5 years old. The disease led to progressive loss of peripheral and night vision during my teens and twenties, and in recent years it has led to loss of central vision as well,” says Maloney. “My right eye is totally blind, while my left eye is legally blind, meaning I have some limited vision, enough to see shapes and shadows and to read large print high contrast text. My left eye will naturally go totally blind like my right eye, most likely within the next 1-2 years.”

In 2001, Maloney went to Queens University to work as the student therapist through the athletic therapy department for the men’s varsity basketball team. Later, Maloney went on to study his own eye disease as a medical researcher for about ten years at McGill University, with some training at Harvard University during his Masters Degree training. During this time, he also launched a small internet-based start-up company that he recently sold. He moved back to Cornwall in April 2016.

He was very accommodating to my then six-year-old son inviting him to be his “net man” if a fish would happen to strike. After only a short wait, it happened. After hooking into a carp, Brownlee called Vinny over, encouraged him to pick up his fishing net, and coached him into landing the catch. It was a thrilling experience for my son.

Though Maloney has to constantly adapt to the world around him due to his eyesight, he remains a force of positivity for everyone who may be struggling. “For anyone who has any form of challenge, physical, mental, emotional, or otherwise, it’s important to keep in mind that everyone has their mountains to climb,” says Maloney. “Life is simply more fun when you view your challenges as minor inconveniences rather than formidable obstacles, and in most cases we have the freedom to choose which perspective we will adopt.”

Presently, Maloney’s athletic focus is CrossFit, though he soon plans to get back into distance running. “I was recently challenged by some family members to train for a marathon with them; however, I will likely dial it back to a half-marathon instead. I’m also looking to get into rock climbing, so I will see if that goal materializes in the months ahead,” says Maloney. “Truly, my goals change frequently, and they often depend on challenges that have been put forth by family members or friends. Training for long-distance running events is just one example.

At present, I’m just focusing on improving my overall athleticism so that I can be prepared for whatever challenges and crazy fitness bets come my way.”

Brownlee a Fan of Parkway Fishing

A couple of summers ago I did just that when my son Vincent and I were introduced to Brandon while we were all fishing under the bridge at Hoople Bay.

“The thing I enjoy most about fishing is meeting new anglers,” says Brownlee. “You are never too old, or too young, to start fishing. Fishing is not all about catching fish; it’s more about enjoying nature and making memories.”

The graduate of RothwellOsnabruck District High School in Ingleside (in 2015) says some of his best fishing spots are in the Long Sault Parkway. It’s a perfect situation for the 19-year-old having the St. Lawrence River so close by to his home.

His favourite memory in the sport is landing the elusive lake trout while fishing the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall. The biggest fish he ever caught was a 43-pound conman

Another highlight in his fishing career was filming with the Fish Finders II crew in 2015. Here’s an excerpt from the Fish Finder’s Facebook page:

“We met Brandon Brownlee while shooting a carp episode two years ago on the Long Sault Parkway. At the time Brandon was 15 years old and spending all of his free time after school fishing on the banks of the St Lawrence River. We were so impressed with this young man that we kept in touch with him through social media and knew that the next time we were going to be filming in the Cornwall area we would invite Brandon to fish with us. Well, that finally happened and what a great couple of days it was! Looking forward to fishing with you again Brandon!”

Brownlee also enjoys learning Long Sault’s Brandon Brownlee poses with one of his impressive catches. Brownlee says his favourite form of fishing is bottom-fishing new techniques and figuring out how for carp and channel catfish.

He can be found on the ice of the St. Lawrence and surrounding water bodies two-to-three times a week during the winter ice-fishing season.

In the summer, he enjoys the pasttime 5-6 times a week.

In terms of his favourite coaching memory, Zappitelli has a few things that come to mind.

“I have coached a lot of great teams with some amazing athletes and championships. I am still waiting on a big championship to win. An OVFL championship or going to OFSAA with one of my teams would all be major achievements and will top any memory I have to this date,” says Zappitelli. “But if I had to pick a memory, I would have one when I was coaching at Holy Trinity when I was coaching my girls’ hockey team to two EOSSA’s. Those girls had so much heart and dedicated themselves to my system.

Zappitelli grew up in Ottawa where he played and excelled at numerous sports at high levels. He was captain of the Wilfred Laurier University Golden Hawks National Championship team in 2005 and was selected as the first team OUA All Star in 2005.

Ray Miron’s Gift - Local Hockey History

ay Miron - a name legendary in these parts. To those of us in our fifties, some may have vivid memories, a little older and Mr. Miron was a coach, mentor, and bonafide local sports icon.

Coach of the Falcons, Calumets, and Colts for ten years; Ray then moved to the states where he would spend the rest of his life in hockey. Ray was GM of the Washington Presidents - Eastern Hockey League in 59-60, then the New Jersey Larks the following season.

Miron managed Knoxville in 1962, 63, 64, and 65. In 1964, Miron joined the Toronto Maple Leaf organization, managing its affiliate teams in Tulsa, Okla. then Oklahoma City through 1976. It didn’t end there.

Don Menard: 50 Years The RUFFO Report of Summerheights’ Golf with Perry Ruffo

“One day you’ll wake up and you won’t have anyone to take to practice. Enjoy the time you have.” On Tuesday, March 6, 2018 my oldest daughter Brittney played her final minor hockey game at the Benson Centre on pad #3 and her Midget house Cornwall Typhoons team lost to Goulbourn. Thirteen years of minor hockey had come to an end. On Sunday, March 24, 2019 my youngest daughter Madison played her final minor hockey game at the Maxville Arena and her Midget A Glengarry Highlanders team tied Clarence-Rockland. Thirteen years of minor hockey had come to an end. Brittney has just completed her first year at Carleton University and Madison is about to attend Queen’s University in the fall. The early morning ice times are tough, the cold rinks are not always pleasant and the snow storms don’t always make it easy for travel but I feel like I miss it already. There have been lots of jerseys, teammates, laughs, travel, friends, and memories. Thank you both for the years of entertainment.

-The Holy Trinity Falcons senior girls’ soccer team played their first tournament of the season in Kingston at the Queen’s University Tournament. The Falcons had a great showing in Kingston having played 4 games and getting eliminated in the semi-finals. The team started

the day with a 2-2 tie against St. Mary’s High School from Cobourg and followed it up with a 4-1 win against Frontenac from Kingston; the defending EOSSAA champions.

In game number three, the Falcons defeated St. Mary’s from Brockville by a score of 6-0. Their round-robin results were enough to see them finish in the top spot of their pool and advance to the semi-finals where they would fall 3-0. Most of the games were played on the pitch at Queen’s University. The team continues to practice indoors until things dry up outside. A full slate of games is scheduled in the coming weeks.

-How are everyone’s NHL playoff brackets now that the first round is done? I can tell you that mine took a beating! I only picked 3 of the 8 series correctly.

-With the NHL regular season behind us, Larry’s Hockey Bonanza office hockey pool has crowned its champion. Richard Dore finished in top spot with 1576 points and has claimed bragging rights in the office.

Finishing in second place was Ron Lefebvre with 1545 pts, followed

by Jody Poitras with 1470 pts. The bottom 4 finishers were Robin Ruest with 1469 pts, Steve Fleming with 1453 pts, Perry Ruffo with 1393 pts and, in last place from start to finish, was Ryan O’Rourke with 1270 pts.

on Menard is a veteran golfer, to say the least. He’s been hitting the links since 1969. That’s 50 years for those who can do the math. He joined Summerheights in 1970, and he’s still a member today. “I’ve seen the club evolve from 9 holes to 18 holes to 27 holes, and now to 36 holes. To me it’s home away from home,” he says. “My job as a factory worker gave me plenty of time to golf.”

Now, Don plays golf five to six times a week. What he enjoys about his sport is the friends he’s made over the years, the exercise, and getting out into the fresh air. What he enjoys about his club is the people. “They make me feel at home he says. The staff is great.”

Don has a lot to remember about golf. He’s good at it. “My best score for nine holes is 32.

I shot a 69 in eighteen holes in 1994,” he says.

His favourite golf memory is his first holein-one, which he potted in 1973. He’s had four more since. A close second for favourite memory for Don is 1998 when he won his first club championship at the tender age of 52.

When he’s not golfing, Don loves to spend time with his family, play crib with his wife, and go for walks.

Violence and Racism in Boxing

Picture this first scene: You’re at a boxing or MMA event where two boxers have a grudge match and are using some dirty tactics.

The coach gets into an argument with the opposing boxer and corner.

After the bout, the coach resumes the argument in the hallway of the arena with the opponent and in the heat of the argument, the coach goes after

the boxer. A brawl ensues involving the coaches, the boxers and parents and friends of the boxers. The trophy case in the arena gets smashed and several awards are severely damaged.

The cops are called and charges laid against the coach and the boxer and several friends and family members.

Well boxing is a violent sport and teaches violence right? What can you expect? Right?

Scene 2: You’re at a boxing event where two boxers are boxing in an even match. One boxer is of colour (black) and the other boxer is caucasian (white). The crowd being predominantly white begins to hurl racial slurs at the opposing black boxer in order to put him off his game. The racial slurs continue and

To be expected you say? After all, boxing is a violent sport that attracts thugs and breeds violence. It attracts people from the underclass and less privileged. Right? WRONG!!

Both scenarios did occur in real life, not in the sport of boxing but in the sport of hockey. That’s right my friends. Scenario 1 occurred in Metcalfe, Ontario during a junior game between a Metcalfe and a Quebec team in 2018. The game was heated and some dirty tactics were used. After the game in the main hallway of the arena, the Quebec coach and a Metcalfe player had words. The coach and player engaged in a fist fight. The father of the Metcalfe player got involved and a general brawl broke out causing damages to the building, including the trophy case, which was smashed along with several awards and trophies. The police were called and charges were laid.

The second scenario happened recently, in 2019, at a game in SaintJérome, Quebec where the visiting team’s star player, who happened to be black, was heckled, harassed all night with racial slurs. Both scenarios are very recent.

Shameful behaviour. It gives new meaning to the old phrase “I went to a hockey game and a boxing match broke out.” I have been involved in boxing since I was a teenager and rarely have I seen such behaviour from fans or especially parents of fighters. Many first time observers at a boxing event are shocked to see the two competitors embrace and congratulate each other warmly after a gruelling hotly contested match.

The coaches shake hands, regardless of differences, and leave the fighting for another day. There is a profound respect between boxers and coaches alike.

Why does this happen in hockey, yet so rarely in boxing? I think it’s because in boxing, athletes leave it

all in the ring regardless of who wins or loses. Parents and friends cheer and shout instructions but raunchy behaviour is not encouraged or allowed. Yet boxing is violent? Yes it is but it’s controlled violence, it’s honest and brings the truth out of the competitors. Spectators, friends and family cheer and most of the time not with venom or malice but out of concern. There are rules and there is respect. People who behave like goons or thugs are banned from the sport.

People envision Mike Tyson biting Evander Holyfield’s ear and the ensuing brawl afterward. In truth, it was a one in a million case. I am not saying it never happens but in all my years as a competitor, coach and official rarely have I seen the foul language, insults and general bad behaviour from boxing parents as compared to hockey parents.

No offence folks but it’s true. It’s a paradox to say the least. Boxing has many stigmas attached to it. Some true, many of them false. Check out a local amateur boxing event and see for yourself.

As a matter of fact, on June 1st at the Cornwall Civic Complex, there will be a match featuring former councilman Dave Murphy vs Sergeant Dave Mclean with a cofeature featuring Cornwall Police officer Chris Sullivan vs Watertown New York fireman Dave Little. Also on the program, there will be other amateur matches featuring boxers from Ontario, Quebec and NewYork state. Come and enjoy the show.

Listen to the crowd and watch the coaches and competitors. Watch the respect and hugs and handshakes after a hard fought bout. I was a boxer, now am a coach and I love what I do. I love boxing and how it changes a life. I am proud and love boxing.
