Local Soccer Players Are Making Cornwall Proud as They Smash Their Goals of Reaching Higher Levels of Play

aleb Clarke, Ethan Legue, Maxime Lamarche, and Jace Brush have been working their way up the ranks in the local soccer community, moving from playing with the Seaway Coyotes and Seaway Blazers, to trying out and making it onto the Ottawa South United Soccer Club.

“With their skills and determination, they were quickly added to the team,” says Becky Clarke, Kaleb’s mom. “All the boys tried out for OSU Force Academy Blue team when this all started. These four Cornwall

boys seemingly came out of nowhere and after a week of practicing with them and playing a game, they were quickly added to the team. Kaleb was asked shortly after to try out for a higher-level team. The coach of that team went to see the boys play a game, liked what he saw and reached out to us for Kaleb to tryout. Within a few weeks of practicing with both teams, he was asked to join the White team permanently.”

Kaleb Clarke is 14 years old and attends St Joe’s in Cornwall. His favourite soccer team is Liverpool and he’s been playing soccer since he was four years old. It’s what he’s

Remembering Phil Everson

T

he death of a loved one is never easy, but when that loved one is young and healthy, the aftermath can be truly staggering.

Johneen and Tom Everson’s son, Philip passed away at the finish line of the Army Run in Ottawa in September of 2019, a little over a year ago. What the couple didn’t know - what no one knew - was that Philip had a rare genetic condition: arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition that doctors believe affects about 1 in 5000 people.

According to the Eversons, doctors recommend that anyone with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy abstain from exercise. Philip, they say was an avid runner. “He ran his first Army Race before he was old enough to drive,” explains Tom. “He did the 5k. The Army run was very special to him.”

The photo accompanying this article is a special one. “This is a picture of Phil on the day he died,” explains Tom. “This picture was given to us by the Army. They were awesome. A representative from the Army Run came to our house and gave us this picture, Phil’s race day bib, his finisher medal – appropriately they are dog tags – and a letter of condolences from the Commander of the Canadian Army. Apparently, the picture was taken near Rideau Hall, which was a little less than halfway through the 21 km race.”

“In a way,” adds Johneen, “it was a blessing that he didn’t know [about the myopathy]. Philip started walking at nine months and was on the run ever since.”

As tragic as this story is, the Eversons are proud that Phil’s desire to give back to St. Lawrence Secondary School has become a reality through the “Phil Everson Memorial Fund”, a fund that annually awards a $1500 scholarship to a deserving graduate.

December’s Game On athlete is Glen Walter’s Lydia Campbell. Lydia has been horseback riding and barrel racing for five years. “What I love about horseback riding and barrel racing is how much of a team sport it is,” she says. “It’s the horse and rider who have to work together to succeed.”

Lydia has competitive goals for both the immediate future and the long term. Once COVID restrictions are lifted, she’d like to continue competing in shows in Ontario and Quebec, and after high school, she’d like to add rodeos in Western Canada to her itinerary. While finishing school, she plans to continue to work at her two parttime jobs - at Phase II Hair Studio and at CV’s Performance Horses - and to finish her riding instructor levels. After high school, the plan is to take a year off to focus on training and competing. She then plans to pursue farm management and a farrier course.

Lydia feels that some of her most notable accomplishments are travelling to Ohio to compete in the All-American Quarter Horse Congress and qualifying for and competing at the Quebec Provincials in 2018 and 2019.

Every day he involves himself in soccer, whether it’s playing with his friends or family. He has even taught his dog to play. He watches soccer videos to learn new tricks and techniques. According to his family, every year Jace gets stronger and faster with the knowledge and skills he has developed from the previous year. Since Jace was young, soccer has always been his passion.

Finally, 14-year-old Maxime Lamarche also landed on an Ottawa South United Soccer Club team. He says that his goal was to play for an Ottawa team so I could perfect my skills at a higher level.

“Every birthday or Christmas I would ask for soccer gear so I could practice at home,” says Maxime. “I’m very grateful to be a part of the blue OSU team and I wish to perfect my skills to be able to reach the highest level of competition in this sport that I can. I would like to thank my parents for always being there for me and giving me the opportunity to play my favorite sport at a competitive level.”

All four of the boys’ parents are incredibly proud to see them continue to grow and thrive. They’ve pushed themselves to succeed despite the pandemic, and the OSU league has been incredibly accommodating for the boys by adjusting team practices the best they can to times that work for

this group from Cornwall.

“I have watched these boys grow up, and for years I have watched them get better and better from house league, Seaway Coyotes, and Seaway Blazers,” says Becky. “We were ready for something more but were stuck.

try to see if we could make it work to try out for a higher level of soccer. As parents, we knew they could do more and challenge themselves more. OSU is the right fit for their development.

The Evolution of Paramedicine

The evolution of Paramedicine is something to certainly marvel over - we are a relatively young profession as we know it today. Caring for individuals and transporting injured folks have been mainstays in health care, but what that looks like has vastly changed over time. The pre-hospital care of those injured and sick has evolved and at an exponential rate over the last 15 to 30 years. This evolution has proven challenging, but the profession has risen to the occasion.

Ambulances first appeared in wars and often consisted of wagons and horses. Even before this time there were stretcher bearers transporting the injured with little to no care provided. The need for better pre-hospital care started to emerge as a trend and so the profession of Paramedics was born. Not unlike most new things, it started off small, with a lot of concentration on getting the injured and sick to a hospital quickly. First-aid and CPR became the gold standard of care and were considered revolutionary in the pre-hospital field. The need for more advanced pre-hospital care was recognised and the introduction of defibrillation, medications, legislative changes, formal educational requirements, and a plan for general modernization of the profession was developed.

Today Paramedics in Ontario are an amazing group of professionals that bring an assortment of knowledge, skills, tools, and medications outside the walls of a hospital to patients. The toolbox of medications has steadily risen in my short 15-year career having started with just a few symptomrelief medications. As an Advanced Care Paramedic, I now have the ability to manage a wide assortment of patients outside the hospital with over 30 medications. A complex patient is often managed with just two Paramedics having to perform the work of half a dozen medical professions. I marvel at the work our Paramedics have done and what they have yet to accomplish.

The holidays are a special time for all of us, even firefighters. Cornwall firefighters help celebrate the season by running Sparky’s Toy Drive. Firefighters who work on Christmas Day will enjoy a meal with all the trimmings at one of our two stations.

This year, you will likely celebrate the holidays a little differently as we are all focused on staying healthy. Please take some time to ensure you are safe from fire, too.

Fire can happen anywhere, anytime. It most often strikes when we let our guard down – when we’re distracted by our phone, our kids, or the doorbell. All it takes is for a pot to be left on the stove or a candle left burning unattended, and suddenly a family’s holiday celebrations can turn to tragedy.

Give us the gift of a fire-free Christmas! Follow these important fire-prevention tips: 1. Keep all candles away from the Christmas tree.

2. If you’re displaying a real tree, make sure the base is immersed in water at all times. Make a fresh cut five centimetres off the base

of the trunk before placing the tree in the stand.

3. Place your tree at least one metre away from any heat source – like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, and lights.

4. Check all sets of lights before putting them on the tree and discard any sets that are damaged or old.

5. Keep candles in a sturdy holder away from children, pets, and combustible materials. Blow them out before leaving the room.

6. Use extension cords temporarily. Don’t place them under rugs or furniture. If a cord feels warm to the touch, stop using it immediately.

7. Alcohol and fire are a dangerous mix. Keep a close eye on anyone attempting to cook while under the influence of alcohol.

8. Stand by your pan! Many fires are started by cooking. Stay in the kitchen, set a timer, and keep combustibles far from the stove.

9. Smoking is a leading cause of fatal fires during the holidays. Butt out cannabis and cigarettes in large, deep ashtrays.

Smoke outside if you can. Don’t smoke in bed.

Off-road cycling trails created at Guindon Park

C

ornwall’s amazing waterfront cycling trails now have a perfect companion – adventurous off-road trails through the tall trees of Guindon Park.

The expansive park on the western edge of Cornwall is now home to 10.5 km of mountain and fat biking trails that weave and wind through the trees, ponds and hills of this outdoor oasis.

The trails were built by Cornwall resident and cycling enthusiast Pat Clarke and several friends, who saw the potential that existed below the park’s vast tree canopy. The work to build the trails took hundreds of hours of volunteer time spanning several months, with City staff also lending a hand when needed to clear obstacles or build passages over low spots.

“It’s a perfect spot to ride with the hills. People don’t realize what we have here (at Guindon Park),” said Clarke. “This is great trail running.”

The new trails feature an easier

section for children and beginners as well as intermediate and expert portions for more advanced off-road cyclists seeking a challenge. The result is a trail system that covers the entire spectrum from relatively flat, winding trails to stretches with fast, sharp turns and steep inclines and declines.

“We tried to use the hills wherever we could,” he added.

Clarke believes the trails will cater to both local off-road cyclists and visitors in search of a new adventure.

He’s already spoken to some avid off-road cyclists who regularly visit other trails in the region and they were quite impressed with the experience.

“They loved it,” he added. “It’s close to home so they don’t have to go as far (to cycle).”

While the trails were built primarily for mountain biking, Clarke said they can be also be used for walking and running. In the winter months, they will also be a good fit for fat biking and snowshoeing. Clarke hopes to Cornwall’s Oldest Paint, Blind & Shutter Store.

Fishin’ with Colton Gallant

4-year-old Colton Gallant is from Alexandria, Ontario. He is a Special Constable with the Cornwall Police Service and an avid fisherman.

This year, Gallant was lucky to be able to spend some time with his father out on the water fishing. During these times of uncertainty, moments like these are extra meaningful.

“My dad, Myles and I bought fishing kayaks at the start of the season. I’ve really enjoyed being able to spend some quality time with him and bond over something we are both very passionate about,” says Gallant.

“I also love how peaceful it is out on the water, especially while in the midst of a pandemic. It’s nice being able to just disconnect from the craziness of it all and enjoy something simple.”

Gallant remembers his love for fishing starting at a very young age.

“I remember when I was really young, maybe 5 or 6 years old, going fishing with my dad off the shore at Kenyon Dam,” says Gallant. “I can’t say I remember really catching much, but nonetheless it’s a memory that I have always kept with me and will always remember.”

Although he’s been fishing with his dad for quite a long time, his favourite fishing memory actually took place this year.

“My dad and I took a road trip with the kayaks, up to a little lake just north of Perth called Silver Lake,” says Gallant. “We couldn’t have asked for better weather and we caught a couple of nice-sized bass to cap it off.

Building off of that, my favourite place to fish would have to be Silver Lake. It’s such a beautiful little lake and not too far of a drive from here.”

Photo Submitted For those who have never tried fishing, Gallant says he thinks you need to be a patient person to really enjoy it.

“There are days where you can spend hours out on the water without a bite, but on the days when you finally land a big one it makes those other days worth while,” says Gallant.

“I think I would try to sell someone who’s never tried fishing before on that feeling - it’s pretty great.”

Next, Gallant would love to make more trips up north, similar to the Silver Lake trip he went on this summer.

“My uncle also bought himself a

fishing kayak at the end of this past season, so we’ve already started trying to map out some trips with him for next year,” says Gallant.

When Gallant’s out on the water, he’s usually looking to catch a few small mouth bass. He says they usually put up a pretty good fight when reeling them in.

“I was able to catch a couple of decent-sized musky this year which was a pretty cool experience,” says Gallant. “Those would probably be my most notable catches of this year, but I’m hoping to have a few more next season!”

Are there really 50 different words for snow in some northern native languages?

Winters are long at the North Pole and it is snow-covered up to nine months a year. Claims that the Yupik and Inuit languages have over 50 words for snow is first loosely attributed to anthropologist Franz Boas who, among others, pointed out that the word ‘snow’ is often included in compound words and put together as a single term (a process called polysynthesis) to describe types of snow, various snow conditions or even snow on various surfaces.

Examples include qanik (falling snow), aputi (snow on the ground), pirta (blizzard) and hiryla (snow in a beard). What about having words for falling ice cream, or, ice cream in a beard? Bicycles, not icicles. Parks, not parkas. If you don’t like winter, this puzzle will warm your heart.

A Season of Snow at Big Ben Ski Centre

D

uring the off-season, a capital project to upgrade the snowmaking equipment at Big Ben Ski Centre was completed. Big Ben relies heavily on artificial snow to ensure that there is an adequate snow base to cover the slope. The improvements include a new pump and piping system, the purchase of a new snow gun, and a retrofit to the existing snow gun.

“These upgrades will enable staff to operate two snow guns at the same time, which should allow us to build the base of snow quicker, thus making the hill ready for public use sooner.

Also, with the increased snowmaking capacity, staff will be able to build a thicker snow base which will help us weather any warm spells in the winter,” said James Fawthrop, Manager of Recreation and Facilities at the City of Cornwall.

If the weather cooperates, Fawthrop said he hopes to see Big Ben open sometime over the Christmas

Interview with MPP Jim MacDonell

his past month saw record cases of COVID-19, meeting experts’ predictions of a potentially more potent, second wave surge during the fall. Despite this new influx, our region has been largely successful in avoiding a severe outbreak that would overwhelm our health system.

Thanks to the actions and the ongoing commitment of Ontarians, our province continues to have the lowest rate of active COVID-19 cases among all provinces outside Atlantic Canada – at 89 cases per 100,000. This rate compares to Quebec at 128, BC at 165, Alberta at 305, and Manitoba at 634. In fact, we are the lowest per capita jurisdiction in North America. Our LTC homes also have the lowest per capita number of active cases in Canada. We can continue this level of success by social distancing, wearing a mask, frequent hand washing, and testing when symptomatic and isolated when feeling unwell. While we stave off the pandemic, the province is making every effort to provide influenza vaccination doses to anyone who requests it. With the unprecedented early rush, there were initial delays in meeting demand. With orders required in December of the previous year, we contacted manufacturers worldwide and other jurisdictions across the country to secure any spare stocks. We successfully secured over a million additional doses, and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit is in the midst of its annual Flu vaccination program. I have received concerns over class sizes in the province, but despite record-level funding of over $1.3 billion for school supports, there are not enough qualified teachers available. While our government revoked Regulation 274, which forced principals to hire teachers based exclusively on seniority, there are still challenges to hiring. We have been negotiating for months with the teacher’s unions (through the Ontario Teachers’ Federation) for a one-year suspension of regulations restricting the hiring of retired teachers, which school board leaders (like principals) have been asking for. Despite considerable delay from the Ontario Teachers’ Federation, we finally reached an agreement earlier this month to allow boards to continue employing a retired teacher for 95 days without a monetary penalty. I don’t want to take away from the hard work being done by our front-line teachers and education workers, but we need cooperation from their representatives. The situation is so dire that some boards have been hiring parents to supervise students in classrooms.

On November 5, I was happy to see Finance Minister Rod Phillips’s 2021 budget and hear him identify our plan to address the pandemic’s serious health and economic impacts. Ontario’s Action Plan: Protect, Support, Recover sets out $45 billion over three years. I am confident it will help protect people’s health, provide essential programs, and tax measures to offset the virus’s impact and ensure that Ontario’s long-term economic recovery is robust and far-reaching. Two of the many areas of improvement the government focuses on are increasing the number of long-term care beds and better broadband connectivity. I was happy to confirm the government’s plan to invest $25,726,912 to build a total of 152 new beds and upgrade an additional 392 beds at Heartwood and Parisien Manor in Cornwall, Woodland Villa in Long Sault, and Dundas Manor in Winchester. This pandemic has exposed the need for critical broadband infrastructure. Our budget is increasing funding to improve and expand broadband and cellular access by almost four-times, to nearly $1 billion. Advanced broadband networks will be essential for a robust recovery and this province’s future, including remote and rural areas, such as Eastern Ontario.

Intriguingly, Miracle on 34th Street has been a success from day one (with critics and the movie viewing public), unlike many other Christmas classics, that flopped when first released, only to gain traction much later with the advent of television showings each December, its message of “Christmas isn’t just a day – it’s a frame of mind” still as popular as it was back in 1947. So, this is a movie miracle to cherish every joyous season, be it in your house, new or old!

Darlene and Bill McGimpsey Make Donation to the Children’s Treatment Centre

he Children’s Treatment Centre in Cornwall recently received a $10,000 donation from Darlene and Bill McGimpsey, Financial Advisors for The Cooperators.

“The funding will help the organization continue their work towards the prevention and treatment of child abuse in Cornwall, the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, and Akwesasne,” said Bill McGimpsey.

The funding, provided by Bill McGimpsey Insurance Inc. with the support of The Co-operators Advisor Community Fund, was made available to further support their commitment to building community leadership and resiliency.

The Children’s Treatment Centre is unique because it is entirely funded by the community. The centre provides free and immediate assessment and treatment to children in need and their families. McGimpsey expressed that while it is unfortunate there is a need for these kinds of organizations to exist, the Cornwall community is lucky to have the Children’s Treatment Centre for youth in need to have access to their services and resources.

Santa, I don’t know about you, but the Master’s in November was a great way to spend a fall weekend. Can you see if they can have it again in April?

Santa, every boy and girl who loves to play hockey is hoping for a hockey season this winter. Any chance you can find a semblance of a season deep inside your bag?

Speaking of a hockey season, I think we need a Colts game, or two, or three, or four…

Santa, the NHL is negotiating a return-to-play and it looks like we might have an all-Canadian division.

Can you make sure that happens, even for the novelty of it?

Santa, if you could do everything you can to get the CFL back next year that would be something. No Grey Cup this year just didn’t seem right.

Oh, since I am on the topic of football, please find a way for the Cleveland Browns to get into the NFL play-offs. I’ll take a post-season appearance as a long-suffering itch scratched!

I guess it would be remiss of me to see what magic you possess when it comes to this pandemic. I can’t wait to see your high-altitude mask. I am sure you have taken all the precautions to stay safe and keep everyone safe while you travel.

“The one thing I’d like people to know about me is I am open to hearing any concerns they have,” says four-term City Councilor Elaine MacDonald. “I will help get answers they are looking for or find the fixes they need, if they are within my purview as a councilor. If they are not, I will be frank in saying so.”

MacDonald has called Cornwall her home since 1982. “I was born in Timmins, lived in a series of mining towns as a kid, and travelled a fair bit as an adult,” she says.

First elected in 2006, MacDonald has an impressive resume when it comes to education, activism, and politics. She has earned a combined Honours Degree in English and Visual Arts, an M. A. in English, and she went on to complete the course work for a doctorate in English.

“Later, when I resumed teaching, I earned specialist certification in English and supplementary qualifications in Special Ed. and Computers. I finished my teaching career at SLHS, serving as department head in English and Communications Technology,” she says.

MacDonald was also active in teachers’ unions and became involved with Cornwall & District Labour Council where she still serves as recording secretary, and she’s a member of the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada.

“Right now, I’m devoting a lot of energy to the future Art and Culture Centre,” MacDonald says of her council work. “There is a symbiotic relationship between education and culture and the appropriate programs in a municipal arts center will support the local education network and the development of a creative economy.”

MacDonald asserts that Cornwall has a thriving arts community “The arts center will be the third piece in our municipal cultural facilities, along with the public library and community museum, and we will continue to work closely with private art spaces like Cailuan Gallery, our neighbour on Pitt Street, will enrich the city tremendously.”

MacDonald has no political ambitions beyond her current position on Council, a position which she enjoys, although she admits that it comes with challenges. “A local issue that is simmering and will soon come to a boil is the electoral question of returning to a ward system in place of the current practice of electing councilors at large,” she says. “I am firmly in favour of councilors at large.”

“A ward system has the potential of pitting neighbourhoods against each other with reps fighting for a greater share of the common purse to enhance their own backyards, so to speak,” explains MacDonald. “It was a divisive practice in the past and would move us backward. We accomplish more when we work together for common goals, that benefit the whole city. Council isn’t about fighting with each other; it’s about working together and finding common ground that makes things better for everyone. I know where I stand on the issue.”

Another current issue before Council is the licensing of rental properties, which is something MacDonald supports. “We have a higher percentage of renters than many Ontario municipalities and working to maintain appropriate property standards in the city is crucial to community safety and wellbeing. We’re wrapping up community consultation now and I will be strongly advocating that an appropriate policy be formulated,” she says.

Twenty-six-year-old councilor for the Township of South Stormont, Andrew Guindon first took office in 2018. Raised in St. Andrews West, he’s currently living in Long Sault with his fiancé, Emily.

Besides his youth, Guindon brings a variety of experience to the council table. “I did three years of a business degree at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, before getting early admission to law school at the University of Ottawa,” he says.

“Since graduating in 2018, I have been working at the Law Office of McDonald, Duncan, Dore LLP in Cornwall, Ontario. I was called to the Ontario Bar in 2019. I primarily practice in the areas of Business law, Wills and Estates, and Real Estate law. I also take on the odd small claim court or landlord-tenant file.”

In addition to working as a lawyer, Guindon sits on the Board of Directors for the Children’s Treatment Centre, a local non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse in Cornwall, the United Counties of SDG, and Akwesasne.

Guindon decided to run for Town Council in 2018. “I thought the Township had a lot of untapped potential, and I wanted do whatever I could to help my community attract tourists, promote our local businesses and beautiful waterfront, and responsibly plan for growth,” he explains.

Engaging the community in the decision-making process and ensuring that the Township seeks public input when developing its strategic and master plans has also been an important issue for Guindon.

“During the remainder of this term, I would really like to see the Township make a big investment in some of the roads, sidewalks, and playground equipment in the northern portion of our township - Newington, Bonville, Northfield, St Andrews, and Osnabruck Centre - that are in fairly rough shape. Improving the level of services in our smaller villages is very important to me,” Guindon says.

He also mentions that the St. Lawrence Parks Commission has been quite receptive of the Township’s new Waterfront Master Plan. “I would really like to see our residents have improved access to the waterfront in Long Sault and Ingleside,” he says. “My hope is that one day the waterfronts in Long Sault and Ingleside can be a place where members of the community can easily gather and take part in events and festivals. Having public washrooms, a covered eating area, a place for pop-up vendors, maybe a simple stage for performances, and a boardwalk or beach would be so great for the Township.”

As for challenges, Guindon cites balancing important projects for the municipality with keeping the budget at an affordable level. “We are a small Township with a limited budget,” he explains, “so sometimes we must pick and choose only one or two of many good potential projects each year at budget time.”

Guindon would like his constituents to know that if they ever have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or would just like to talk about a project or idea they have, they can call him anytime on his cell at 613 330 1935. “I am always willing to take a call and listen,” he says. “Follow the Township or me on Facebook to be kept up to date on what’s happening. We often put out surveys through social media to get input from residents on various items that Council will be considering.”

For Marie-Eve’s birthday last September, she decided she would like to go camping in the Adirondacks, just the two of them. They booked a lot near Lake Placid and drove down with their travel trailer for the weekend.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, 2019, the day before Marie-Eve’s birthday, they got up early to hike Cascade Mountain.

It was an unexpectedly strenuous hike that took many hours to reach the top - and Marie-Eve could not understand why Adam insisted on bringing the heavy tripod strapped to his backpack. When they reached the top, the view was stunning.

“We sat down, took in the sights, had a light lunch, and then Adam suggested we take some photos.

He set up his silly tripod and then went to town. Meanwhile I walked around taking videos on my iPhone,” remembered Marie-Eve. “Adam’s plan was to have the camera pointing

In response to risks posed by the COVID pandemic, the OHL and other junior hockey leagues have decided to adopt a “no body-contact” policy when they return to play. What do you think of this decision?

Peter Collins - Sports Enthusiast -What next; the PGA playing mini putt, MLB teams in a whiffle ball tourney, or maybe the NFL becoming a flag football league? Wherever Don Cherry is these days, he must be spouting off about conspiracy theories and the unfortunate state of junior hockey in Canada. I can imagine after hearing about the “no body-contact” policy that he’s comparing the OHL’s season to a figure skating competition!

Rightfully so, because it appears that the leaders in junior hockey are using COVID-19 as a reason to eliminate body checking in hockey. Maybe it’s to appease those who find contact sports crude and barbaric? Does science support that banning body-contact in hockey will solve the pandemic spread?

Wouldn’t mandating face shields and other protective gear be a more prudent approach, rather than eliminating contact which is part of the essence of the sport?

CCM has developed the Game-On Mask which players can wear with a helmet to help mitigate the risk of virus transmission. The recent NHL season was completed with full contact and there were very few issues despite the large amount of hitting happening during the 2019-20 playoffs. The biggest issue in containing the virus, as witnessed in the U.S. during their college football season, is students’ off-the-field activities. When you are a part of the late teens to early twenties demographic, you share the air of invincibility that permeates that world. Maybe we should wrap our students in cellophane to protect them! Cancelling events, limiting spectators, and limiting access are all acceptable policies. The public practice of social distancing and wearing masks at this time is absolutely necessary. Playing politics and involving sports is not! Play the OHL season the right way, or cancel it altogether.

Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach - The OHL’s decision to adopt a “no body-contact” policy was more a government mandate rather than an adoption. Ontario’s Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Minister Lisa MacLeod said a return-to-play for the Ontario Hockey League would mean a return without bodychecking; a decision sparked by several COVID-19 outbreaks among Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams this fall.

Bodychecking and body contact in hockey has been a hotly debated topic for a long time; COVID-19 has suddenly made it easy to ban bodychecking from the game entirely. The real focus must be on keeping players safe to play the game as it was designed to be played.

Leagues and teams must ensure all personnel and players abide by strict guidelines with mandated testing, safe controls on benches and in busy dressing rooms, and ensure staff and players stick to strict bubble guidelines. Without these guidelines, the spread of the virus won’t change with or without bodychecking.

Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club Lisa MacLeod, Ontario’s Minister of Sports announced that the OHL would be required to modify their play to eliminate deliberate body contact until either a COVID vaccine is available or a public health clearance has been issued. MacLeod went on to say, “This is not about politics and hockey, it’s about a global pandemic and we are guided by healthcare policy.”

The OHL is a league known for developing future NHL players – in the 2020 draft, five of the top-ten players chosen in the 1st round came from the OHL. The “no body-contact” rule will have a negative impact on player development and make it difficult for NHL scouts to properly evaluate prospects leading up to the 2021 draft. How does a power forward or a physical defenceman showcase his skills when he is prohibited from playing that part of his game? It will be difficult to properly assess OHL players when the rules they are being forced to play by are different from those in other leagues.

erek Grant grew up in Cornwall and is incredibly familiar with the town he’s always called home. He attended St. Lawrence High School for Grade 9 before leaving to play hockey in the OHL and graduating from secondary school in Niagara Falls. Now he’s back, with most of his family including his mom, dad, and two of three sisters living nearby.

Currently, Grant is a Sales Consultant at Seaway GM.

It is very hard to choose but my favourite winter sport is hockey. It is the best because it gives you tons of energy. It exercises your muscles and strengthens your legs. World Junior A Tournament Postponed to December 2021

ecently, Hockey Canada announced that in light of the cancellation of the 20192020 hockey season and all National Championships in March, they’ve decided to cancel currently scheduled events and begin to re-plan for them to take place in 2021. There’s still fun to be had at this event in Cornwall, but the community will just have to wait a little longer to have it.

The World Junior A Challenge has now been rescheduled to December 12 – December 19, 2021. The event will take place at the Ed Lumely Arena at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

“At various rates, provinces from coast-to-coast-tocoast have started moving ahead with their phased re-opening, but as it has been since, the season was cancelled. Hockey Canada’s

priority remains the health and safety of all participants and the general public,” says Tom Renney, Chief Executive Officer and Scott Smith, President and Chief Operating Officer of Hockey Canada in a recent media advisory. “We believe the decision to cancel these three events is the safest decision given the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic at the local level, as well as the international implications associated with these events. We appreciate the commitment and support of everyone involved and we look forward to showcasing some incredible hockey to fans next year.”

ike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. recently took part in an 8-round exhibition boxing match.

In 2000, that would’ve been a match for the ages; but in 2020, it’s a couple of quinquagenarians who were, at one time, two of the greatest performers in boxing history allowing us to enjoy a fun boxing event.

For the armchair quarterbacks and has-beens-who-never-were that criticized the event...we all knew it was a world title boxing match!

It was, as promoted, a unique experience pitting two all-time greats in an exhibition.

And they put on a really good show. As anticipated by yours truly, Tyson dominated with

his strength and ability to absorb punches from a much less “fight ready” Jones Jr. Tyson was most definitely better prepared than Jones.

Regardless, eternal respect for both of these warriors who, at a combined age of 105 (Tyson - 54 and Jones - 51), put on an entertaining 8-round match.

Were the rounds only 2 minutes (instead of 3) and the rules such that knockouts and cuts were discouraged? Sure.

But again, it was an exhibition, not a world title match.

And for anyone who criticizes the shape either of these men were in, try skipping rope for 2 minutes straight, with a 1-minute break, and repeat for 8 rounds. Most of us couldn’t even do that, let alone go toe-to-toe with a formidable opponent looking to repeatedly punch us.

Eternal respect for anyone (amateur and pro) who walks that aisle and steps between the ropes in front of any sized crowd with usually half the crowd hoping you’ll lose.

I’d watch Tyson in another exhibition against another opponent any day.

Brody Fairbairn Considers a Football Future at Saint Mary’s University

B

rody Fairbairn started his football career in Cornwall, playing tyke, mosquito, and then peewee. He started playing at the age of nine when his dad signed him up and he soon discovered his talents as a quarterback.

During his peewee years, he started playing for the Cumberland Panthers bantam team in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), a summer provincial league. After a year, he crossed the city and joined the Myers Riders Junior Varsity OVFL team – they won the provincial championship against the Etobicoke Eagles. He then returned to the Cornwall Wildcats

and joined their Ontario Football Conference varsity team as an underaged player, where they played in the conference finals in his third year with them. Throughout high school, he also played for St. Joseph’s High School.

The SJSS team won many SD&G championships and played in the OFSAA championship game last year.

“I am so proud to have played for Cornwall. We are the smallest demographic in the leagues we play in. In my early years, we were looked at as an easy win amongst the Ottawa teams. With dedicated coaches and hard work, we were no longer taken lightly. My first winning experience came when we beat the Orleans

Has anyone else noticed the new bleachers the City has installed at the King George Park? Another awesome upgrade! I can’t wait to see them full again for softball games.

I also enjoyed Jim Riddell’s Senior Talk with Gary Herrington this month. Gary brought up so many great memories from his neighborhood.

My parents often visited the Garand’s (Chief and Betty), who lived across the street from the Herringtons. I always had lots to do when I tagged along.

The December Athlete of the Month is Aiden CameronThompson. Aiden is 17 years old and lives on Cornwall Island in Akwesasne. He attends St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School and is in the 12th grade.

Aiden works as an instructor at Patenaude Martial Arts and very much enjoys participating in the sport. He currently holds a 7-0 record in MMA cage fighting and has completed several training seminars hosted by Canadian World Champion Dave Leduc, who has trained various UFC fighters, including Rhonda Rousey.

Aiden is very passionate about MMA. He says it is not a single sport, but rather a blend of many sports that come together to form a unique fighting experience. “Kickboxing is my structure; it is what I have been training in the longest. Kung Fu is second to that, teaching me quick reflexes. Jujitsu gave me a comfortable flow on the ground and taught me body mechanics. Muay Thai is my favourite form, which harnesses raw power in every strike. Boxing gives me those hammer-like fists. Lastly, Lethwei is a martial art that I have recently been introduced to; it is an ancient sport from Myanmar that has recently started becoming popular due to its unique style.”

Aiden hopes to one day pursue a career in martial arts, and he also plans to join the Armed Forces Reserves. Aside from martial arts, he enjoys participating in marathons including cancer runs, 10k’s and the Spartan Run. He also plays football for St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School in Cornwall.

She has been playing hockey since the age of six, when she joined the Novice League. Her most notable accomplishment so far in hockey was being scouted by a coach in Buffalo, NY,

to play for a Division 1 team out of Toronto.

She currently plays on a co-ed team and holds the position of goalie.

Emma enjoys the competition that comes from playing against the boys and knows that she can not only keep up with them, but also excel with them as a team. “Emma is a talented goaltender who is truly the epitome of calm, cool, and collected in the crease,” says Rodney Wilson, the Assistant Coach of the Seaway Valley U12 Rapids. “She is extremely determined and focused on improving her craft, but always has a big smile on her face when she’s on the ice.”

Emma says hockey is the most Canadian sport in her opinion, and it brings people together to achieve a common goal. Emma hopes to one day pursue a career as a gym teacher and strives to receive a scholarship for hockey.

The male South Stormont Fan Favourite for December is Chase Vachon. Chase is eleven years old and is in Grade 6 at Sacred Heart Elementary. His favourite sport is hockey, and he has been playing for six years.

H i s primary goal while playing defense is to be the best he can be, and he hopes to one day pursue a scholarship in hockey. He says the best things about the sport are the competitiveness of each game, the friendships that form between teammates, and the general conduct of the sport itself.

His coaches are very proud to have Chase as a part of their team.

“Chase is a great athlete who just loves being at the rink and on the ice with his teammates,” says Rodney Wilson, the Assistant Coach with the Seaway Valley U12 Rapids. “He has an awesome attitude, excellent work ethic, and has taken a tremendous stride towards the fall.”

Chase is very appreciative of his parents and his coaches for introducing him to both the sport and the love of the game.

Tales from The Trails

his month, Tales takes a different direction and features the Riverside Snowmobile Club. Founded in 1973 by a small group of enthusiasts from the Morrisburg/Ingleside area, the club currently maintains 160km of trails located between Johnstown and Cornwall, along the 401 corridor.

“The trails are situated on both public and private lands and are operated under a land use agreement with each landowner,” says club member and volunteer, Peter Asquini.

“With the seasonal nature of snowmobiling, the trail network is essentially built from scratch each year by a team of 15 dedicated volunteers. Each fall the volunteers visit the landowners to discuss any issues with the trail. Trails are inspected for any work that needs to be done, brushing, removing dead fall, bridge work etc. Any identified work is then planned and scheduled for completion prior to the first snowfall.”

The Riverside Snowmobile Club is very busy before and during their season. One of the things the club is responsible for before the trails open to the public is the annual installation and inspection of the regulatory, safety, and informational signage. “This process ensures the safety of riders over the course of the season,” explains Asquini.

“The work depends on the weather and land access. Because much of the trail network is on active farmland, sign installation must wait until the harvest is complete and land access is granted.”

Keeping the trails groomed and operational is no small task, either. “Our four groomer operators operate two large industrial groomers with large drags to process and compact the snow into a rideable base,” Asquini says. “Grooming can occur at anytime but preferably at night when traffic is lighter, and temperatures are colder. It takes approximately 40 hours to make one grooming pass over the entire network, and we strive for two passes per week.

This year, the club faces the additional challenge of making sure appropriate COVID-19 protocols are in place to ensure the safety of volunteers and riders alike. “The most frequent question we are receiving from our members is if the trails will be available to ride this winter,” says Asquini. “Working with the district, the OFSC, and under guidance from the local public health units, we have developed a plan that will allow for trails to be open this winter.”

The rider experience however could be quite different, according to Asquini.

“Snowmobiling in itself is relatively low

network strategy called Flex Trails.

“Basically, the plan calls for riders to restrict movements from high risk areas to low risk areas to help prevent the spread of the virus,” Asquinin explains. “The OFSC has mapped all the trails that cross health unit boundaries. Travel between health unit areas that are the same classification will not be discouraged. Where a trail crosses from a high-risk area to a low-risk area, that specific trail will show as closed and riders are urged not to travel on those trails.

We will be monitoring the situation closely and will consult regularly with public health officials as required.”

Bank of Canada Ending Pandemic Program that Helped Real Estate Prices Surge On the day Canadian home sales and prices hit record highs, the Bank of Canada announced an end to the program that is partially responsible for the surge. The Bank of Canada (BoC) flooded the market with cheap mortgage credit in March. Recently, as market data showed a fever pitch had been reached during the “worst” recession in years, they committed to stopping the program. The bond-buying program that helped drive rapid price growth, came to an end Nov.1,2020.

Canada Mortgage Bonds First, a quick refresher (or intro) to Canada Mortgage Bonds (CMBs).

Lenders originate mortgages, pool them, then sell the pool as mortgage backed securities (MBS) to the government. To pay for the MBS, the government sells CMBs to investors to get the funds. The cash flow from the MBS, is then used to pay investors holding the CMBs. In other words, a CMB is a government-backed security for mortgage financing in Canada. Easy, right? Totally obvious, and I’m sure you got that on the first read.

These influence the cost of borrowing based on demand for these bonds. When investor demand for CMBs rises, interest paid to investors falls. When demand falls, interest paid should rise. It’s a simple

The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) gives 20% on the first $2,500 of contributions annually ($7,200 lifetime maximum) per child, for a child under age 18, with the possibility of catchup grants each year. This means the government will give you up to a $500 grant, per year, per child and possibly more, depending on family income.

By putting small amounts of money away each year for your child, and capitalizing on government grants, you are putting your child in the best possible position to tackle the financial burden of post secondary education. As with any investment

made, it is very important to understand what you own in your RESP (as there are many options).

Work with your financial advisor to make sure you are capitalizing on all the government grants available and making tax efficient decisions when it is time to withdraw the money.

costs, but in a seller’s market such as we are having this year, most sellers are leaving money on the table when selling privately.

Homes properly exposed on the market through a realtor are getting well over asking price and in most cases are covering the commission costs and putting extra money in the seller’s pocket. A private sale has limited exposure and will not attract as many buyers.

Even if you end up with more than one offer on a private sale, it will not sell as high as it would with a realtor, being exposed to the open market. On another note, private sellers could be opening themselves up to litigation that could costs thousands of dollars whereas with a realtor, they get the advice and protection they need to avoid such problems.

Instead, the BoC flooded the market with the cheapest money possible. Essentially, they provided a trap and inflated asset values as unemployment increased. It’s one of the few times in history this has occurred. Just how carried away did they get with purchasing CMBs? The central bank now holds $9.32 billion of CMBs as of Oct 7, up 4.91% from a month before. This represents an increase of 1,710.1% from the same week last year.

To put it into context, from March to August this balance increased $8.10 billion. Total mortgage credit growth only grew $42.10 billion during this time. This shows how astronomically large the scale of this operation was, and understandably helped inflate asset values.

The BoC announced they’ll put an end to their mortgage bond hoarding. The central bank notified investors they’ll end their program on October 26, 2020. Without a surge of deep pocketed investors looking for crap yields, this will likely slow mortgage rates from falling further. They did inject a lot of liquidity, so an increase may not be in the cards for a while. However, they are still forecasting mortgage defaults will rise by multiples.

Last year, real estate markets began to see sales volumes drop and price growth stall.

The BoC decided, for unrelated reasons (wink, wink), that they would buy CMBs to improve liquidity. “Improve liquidity” is bank-talk for “keep rates lower than the market wants them to be”. When a buyer picks up any lack of demand, they prevent any increases. This puts a cap on how much interest paid can rise. There’s always a buyer willing to buy in this case, so there’s no need to increase how much is offered. The purchases climbed very slowly, as the weeks went on.

When the pandemic struck, the BoC treated CMBs like toilet paper and hand sanitizer – by hoarding. They began buying them on a competitive basis, meaning they didn’t just buy what couldn’t be sold - they actively competed with bidders, driving rates lower.

Normally in periods of increased risk, funding is supposed to become more expensive.

This lowers the risk of losses to households borrowing.

“Pommier Jewellers December Sports Mom” Bonnie Ruest

December’s Mom of the Month is Bonnie Ruest. Since she was a child, Bonnie has been involved in various sports including soccer, basketball, softball, golf, tennis, skiing, and figure skating.

The life lessons passed along while participating in individual and team sports are invaluable, and Bonnie knew she wanted her own children to experience them first-hand. Her two children, Elias and Jacob, were involved in many sports themselves as children, the most memorable for Bonnie are hockey, lacrosse, baseball, football, soccer, skiing, snowboarding, and golf.

When her children were young, she remembers spending her time helping to pack lunches for their tournaments, fundraising for their teams, driving them to and from practices and games, and editing their hockey and lacrosse yearbooks. As her kids grew, so did her responsibilities, and she began to coach lacrosse in both house league and rep.

Her most treasured memories of this time are being a part of the bench staff with her son Elias, Nathan Wheeler, and Head Coach Scott McMaster, and together bringing the CMLA Tyke Celtics lacrosse team to the 2016 Provincial Championships.

Today, Jacob, who plays lacrosse professionally in the NLL, and Elias are 27 and 30 respectively, and they have continued to show their love of sports by coaching teams in their community. Bonnie is very proud of them both. “The experience of celebrating a provincial gold medal with my son was extra special,” she says.

Jim Riddell’s Sports Talk with Area Seniors Gary Herrington

orn and raised in Cornwall, Gary Herrington grew up in a family of seven boys at 136 First Street in the row houses near York and First. Mrs. Herrington operated a hair salon out of the front room of the home with Gary mentioning that she worked up until aged 75 - during the last part of her career, she would go to retirement homes to style the hair of her longtime clients.

Gary grew up in Cornwall during the 1950’s and 60’s, a time when everything was within walking distance and having a car wasn’t a necessity. “My dad passed away about six years ago at 90 years of age and never owned or drove a car in his life. There were a lot of kids in our neighbourhood and it never took long to get a gang together for a game of hockey or lacrosse. Cy Miller was the rec director for the city and he donated a lacrosse box which we built behind the Thompson’s house at First and Augustus. We maintained it and all of the kids would gather there and we had access to it 24/7. In the winter we would flood it for hockey - we would run a hose across Augustus Street from Don Fraser’s house to the box.”

Sonny Harrington, Gary’s dad, had served with the Navy during WWII and he was employed as a mechanic/ shift operator at the power generating plant at the foot of Cumberland Street.

The power plant was next to the old cotton mill, which was just east of the plant manager’s house, now the RCAF Wing. The cotton mill, which had employed a couple thousand people at one time, burned to the ground on Halloween night in 1963.

My two older brothers Richard and Allen, along with Chuck Lee, Ronnie Thompson, and Jack McLennan played with the Cornwall Wildcats and a few of them went on to play Senior and Pro. There was a lacrosse box at Alexander Park across from where Canadian Tire is today, along with the outdoor boxes at the Bob Turner and that is where minor lacrosse was played. My father was President of the Cornwall Minor Lacrosse Association and had about 800 kids in the program with all teams being sponsored by the Canadian Legion, each team having a different colored Legion jersey. We had an annual parade at the beginning of each season complete with a band, where all teams would march from the Legion down second street to the Bob Turner.”

Back in those days there were no Zamboni’s - there were eight or nine of us and we would scrape the ice and push the snow into a pit just outside the visitor’s dressing room door. There was a lever that would lift a panel covering the pit and then we would lower it back in place so the team could walk out of the room.

We had two barrels full of water that we would push out and that’s how we flooded the ice, every hour on the hour. At 10 o’clock scheduled hockey finished and the rink rats would play shinny hockey until 1am. The following year, 1972, Gary was back in Cornwall studying business at St. Lawrence College and playing hockey with the Road Runners. Two years later St. Clair College in Windsor recruited Gary. “I had worked five summers at Ontario Power Generating (OPG) as a gardener and had developed a passion for gardening and landscaping, so I went to St. Clair for two years and got a horticultural degree.”

Returning to Cornwall, Gary worked at Domtar for two and a half years before going back to St. Lawrence College to finish his business degree. He then started a landscaping company specializing in interlock and foundation planning, which eventually grew to the point of having six employees. In 2000, Gary

Gary continued playing hockey over the years, joining the Cornwall Hubs in 1978 and playing with them until 2017. A father of two, Gary coached sons Patrick and Jamie for about ten years. Jamie, a former Cornwall Colt, attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire on a four-year hockey scholarship, played minor pro in the ECHL, CHL and in Europe, and is presently a scout with the New York Rangers organization. Gary played two years of Jr. B with Baril, a team sponsored by city alderman Norm Baril, who later, along with Jim Larin became coach and GM of the Cornwall Royals. In 1968 Gary joined the Royals who were playing in the Montreal Metro League which became part of the QMJHL one year later. In a game against Drummondville, Gary had the honour of scoring the first Cornwall Royals goal in the QMJHL. Following the 1969-70 season both Gary and Royals goalie, Billy Smith were drafted by the Los Angeles Kings. Smith played for two years in the Kings system before being claimed by the New York Islanders in the expansion draft and going on to win four Stanley Cups with the Isles.

“Billy went to the pro camp in LA and I went to the rookie camp in Neilson, BC. It was quite an experience! I was nineteen and it was my first time on a plane. I flew to Calgary and then to Cranbrook, BC where I caught a bus for the two and a half-hour trip to Neilson. I had no contract or no agent and I was just another body on the ice. Most of the players were in their thirties and hanging on to their hockey career in the minors. I had played left wing my whole life, but they wanted me on defence because I skated well backwards. It was just a matter of time until the cuts came down from the pros and I got bumped out.”

One of the hardest things we do in life is keeping all our balls in the air at once. Even before reading about the eight pillars of High Performance Living, you probably felt like you had to do twenty things. While HPL might seem more of the same, I have structured the program so that it enables you to manage your life better.

The key to making High Performance Living work for you is concentrating on your eight pillars and making sure your approach to each of them is firmly connected to your values. When you do this, you are streamlining your life because you will begin to associate those different balls you are juggling with particular pillars. Doing so will help you have a deeper understanding of each pillar within your own life. The best way you can implement HPL is to consciously practice it.

Conscious practice requires mindfulness. Mindfulness is a conscious choice of living in the present, guided by value-based decisions and exercising non-judgment on others. It’s a state of being, where your fundamental core values define your mindset, guide your decisions, align your intentions and actions, and result in serving, supporting, and championing the success of others.

You have to be conscious of what you’re doing while applying your core values. To achieve High Performance Living, you have to be fully engaged in all its phases. An important concept of mindfulness is the non-judgment piece. Yes, you have to evaluate yourself regarding each pillar and your

emotions, but don’t condemn yourself.

If you feel terrible about something within one or more pillars, reevaluate and move on once you have determined what to do. If it’s in your past, learn from it and apply those lessons to your life. If it’s something you’re dealing with now, using the tools will help you deal with it in a healthier way and to draw you closer to that High Performance Life of fulfillment.

• Accepting praise. Be comfortable with well-deserved praise, as people notice positive changes in you.

Refusing praise is not the same thing as humility.

• Being humble. Being humble sounds out of place on a list of ways to improve your confidence. We often mistake the concept of humility for humiliation, but they’re quite different.

It means honestly recognizing our limitations as well as our positive attributes. Being humble means you can understand where you need to improve, and you are willing to learn.

Accompanying confidence is the tenacity you conjure up within yourself that makes it easier to stick with High Performance Living.

When we find ourselves confronted with large or difficult tasks, we often feel overwhelmed. It is precisely at such times when we need to cultivate tenacity. So how do you do it? Here are some suggestions: • Begin with the end in mind. Before you begin a pillar, understand what it is you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and what it’ll look like when you’ve accomplished it.

• Break down each pillar into small goals that add up to what you want to ultimately accomplish.

• Set goals and be sure to tell someone you trust about your goals.

ports Energy has received some good news all the way from the North Pole! Mr. and Mrs. Claus and their team of elves in the North Pole are entirely COVID-19 free and are working to make sure all the toys are delivered on Christmas Eve.

“Of course, my work is deemed an essential service,” says Santa Claus.

“My team and I had to work hard this year to make sure we stayed healthy well ahead of the holiday season.

Usually, around March, Mrs. Claus and I head somewhere tropical for a small vacation. This year, we stayed home with our North Pole friends to make sure there wasn’t any risk of Christmas being cancelled.”

The good news is that because Santa and his team stayed home for all of 2020, they’re well ahead of schedule when it comes to building toys and they are now working on plans to make sure they stay healthy dur-

ing their deliveries.

“We’ve been busy building special masks, with a bit of Christmas magic, to make sure that all of my helpers including the reindeer stay COVID free during our deliveries,” says Santa. “We want to make sure we stay in tip-top shape for Christmas 2021.”

If you haven’t sent your letter to Santa yet, there’s still time! Letters are arriving as they normally would, and Santa is cherishing these notes a little extra this year.

2020 Update: How COVID-19 and Other Challenges Have Impacted the Alexandria Glens

A

ccording to coach Carl Robillard, COVID-19 isn’t the only challenge the Alexandria Glens have faced so far this season. Having made 13 changes to last year’s lineup, the team has had a focus on rebuilding. However, the skill level already looks promising.

“The team is very young but has already shown it will be a hard team to play against this season,” says Robillard. “I am expecting great things from this group of young men.”

COVID has had a major impact on hockey this year, and the Glens are no exception.

“We are limited to playing games against one other team exclusively at this time while taking all the proper precautions to protect our players and staff on and off the ice,” says Robillard. “Although we are looking forward to playing more games, we are happy to be on the ice, playing the game we all love, considering what other people in our communities must deal with each and every day.”

Because of these changes and challenges, Robillard says that the players are looking forward to taking a step towards a semblance of a season, but in general have been very good when it comes to understanding the situation we all find

ourselves in.

On the plus side, this season gives the team the ability to focus on development. When it comes to what’s next for the team moving forward, Robillard states, “There will be a focus on continued development in practices, as well as modified scrimmages against our current opponent, the Char Lan Rebels. All games to date have been extremely competitive and spirited affairs, having seen three of the six first games go

into overtime.”

Robillard adds that the team recently honoured Eastern Ontario Cobras AA President, Bruno Gendron who died suddenly and tragically in m i d - N o v e m b e r.

“Bruno was a great person and tireless volunteer. He will be greatly missed by so many in the community,” says

Robillard.

We’re proud of the team for honouring a great name in the local hockey community and we also look forward to seeing the competition between the two Junior B teams play out as we continue to hope for a regular season to begin.

ello boxing fans. It’s been a busy time for this writer. I have had some health issues, but that’s a topic for another time.

As I have written in a couple of past articles, 2020 has been both a year to remember and a year to forget. On that note, Nov. 28/2020 will feature two legends making a comeback: Mike Tyson, a 54 yr. old former 2x heavyweight champion vs Roy Jones Jr., a 51 yr. old 4-division former champion.

They are scheduled for 8-2 minuterounds. The “bout” is billed as an “exhibition”, although on social media both camps are predicting

Roy Jones Jr.’s last match was against Scott Sigmon in February of 2018, beating Scott by a unanimous decision. Roy Jones Jr. had a fantastic amateur career winning several national titles and being robbed of a Gold medal in Korea at the 1988 Olympics. Turning pro, Ray Jones Jr. campaigned first as a middleweight (160lbs), and he won world titles at middleweight (160lbs), super middleweight (168lbs), and light heavyweight (175lbs).

At each of these weights Jones Jr. was dominant and fought every available contender and champion.

He not only beat Ruiz, but gave Ruiz a boxing lesson and dominated the bigger, heavier man. Ruiz had twice defeated Evander Holyfield.

Tyson retired from boxing in 2006 after losing 2 consecutive fights to journey men Danray Williams and Kevin MacBride.

Mike Tyson burst onto the scene in 1985, a protégé of the late great Cus D’Amato. He was the perfect body type, and he had the physical and mental attributes to suit the boxing style D’Amato taught; Roy Jr. had an unconventional hands high, a short stance, and

erratic head movement combined with combination punching.

Tyson blazed a path through the amateurs winning national titles as both a junior and a senior always as a heavyweight. Tyson was 185-190lbs at 13 yrs. old and was a heavyweight for his entire career.

Tyson turned pro in March 1985, after narrowly losing to Henry Tillman at the 1984 Olympic US trials. He blazed through the professional ranks like a streaking comet and won the WBC heavyweight title in November 1986. By 1988, he had unified all the belts and had defeated all contenders, champions, and pretenders. He became an icon and a household name. He went to jail for alleged rape.

He then came back, regained his title, and then lost to Evander Holyfield. He continued boxing winning some and losing some.

People watched as he still captivated attention in the ring, and out. He experienced drug problems and drinking problems.

Women came and went. Finally, in 2002, he lost to Lennox Lewis in his last attempt to regain greatness in the ring. Lennox stopped Tyson in the 8th round of the heavily hyped up fight.

In the last 5-10 years, Tyson

seems to have composed himself, declaring bankruptcy, regaining his money, writing books, making films, and surrounding himself with better, more positive people.

He is now the owner of Tyson Ranch, a 40-acre marijuana growing operation for CBD oils and legal smoking. Tyson lives on the ranch, is remarried, and surrounded by his children.

Many people, this writer included, thought Tyson would be dead by now – but he’s reinvented himself and salvaged his life.

Christmas Meatballs

Meatballs are a staple dish for any holiday party or family gathering at Christmas and New Year’s. I’m constantly asked to make these for the Prevost’s Christmas suppers and events, and there is never any leftovers. Trust me…they’ll be going back time and time again until there’s nothing left. Enjoy!

Meatballs:

5 lbs. ground beef 1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs 1 medium onion diced small 2 eggs 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp. Montreal Steak Spice salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix all ingredients together and form small balls – do not overwork the meat mixture as it will make meatballs dense and hard. Spray a cookie sheet or line your cookie sheet with parchment paper. Place raw meatballs on the cookie sheet and cook in oven for 20 minutes.

Remove from oven and transfer to a roasting pan.

Christmas Meatballs & Sauce

Sauce:

5 cups ketchup 1 1/2 cups molasses 1 1/2 cups water 10 tbsp. vinegar 5 tbsp. brown sugar Combine all ingredients in a pot.

Bring to a boil, letting the mixture bubble long enough to dissolve the sugar. Pour the mixture over meatballs and place the roast pan in the oven at 325 degrees. Bake for 1 hour.

KARATE KOMMENTS “Livin’ The Dream” High Intensity Kata Training

I

n the last Karate Komments column, we discussed low intensity kata training, a drill that entails the practitioner slowing the motion of the form down, allowing time to analyze each and every move for technical correctness. I picked up this training tool back in the early 90’s at a seminar conducted by France’s Alain Sailly, the founder of Goshindo, which he developed from his many years of training and competing in Judo and Jiu-jitsu. Hanshi Sailly, who also has a degree in Physical Education often inserts some teaching tips into his seminars. We were a group of approximately thirty karate black belts, and he explained to us how to slow techniques down to improve technically (low intensity). He also taught us how to speed them up to develop power and to improve cardio (high intensity).

Before you begin this drill, it is important to first do a selfassessment of your health and fitness level, as well as well as any injuries or other concerns. A good rule of thumb here is to time yourself doing the chosen kata at regular speed, and then target a time that is 1/3 or less than your benchmark to complete it.

Make your first movement as hard and as fast as you possibly can and then try to make every movement thereafter harder and faster than the previous one. Put all that you have into each move in the kata and don’t worry about proper technique or correct stances - this drill is all about speed and power. While proper technique may not be a concern with this drill, it is important not to finish up a training session with high intensity practice - always finish up with a few reps of the same kata either at a low intensity level, at regular speed, or a combination of both to clean things up and to maintain muscle memory.

A training session for a single kata would be to begin by doing it once at regular speed, following that up by two repetitions at the low intensity level. Then the fun begins! Do the kata three times at high intensity with a slower-than-normal kata between each high intensity rep. Follow this by doing one more rep at low level intensity, finishing things up with a “reset” by doing your kata one more time at normal speed to clean it up.

To break this session down a little bit, you will have completed ten repetitions of the kata in approximately ten minutes without stopping. Many katas will take approximately 45 seconds to complete when performed at normal speed. The same kata at low intensity level will take a good two minutes while at high intensity, it can be completed in less than fifteen seconds. Totaled up, this will give you a 10-minute home workout consisting of ten repetitions of your chosen kata.

The depression stage was more like resignation. We sat sullenly in the dark, eating too much, drinking too much, and watching sappy Christmas movies on TV, getting paler and chubbier as the weeks and months rolled by. But that didn’t last. It worked for a while, like sulking in a corner sucking our thumb. Maybe the depression stage was just a realization that tantrums don’t work and bargaining really is too risky.

And plus, there’s nothing on TV. And being reminded daily that so many have it worse was just irritating.

But eventually, even if reluctantly, we adjusted. We got up, cleaned the house, learned Zoom, walked the dog, stood in line at the grocery store, painted the guest room. At last, we reached the stage of acceptance. We have a wardrobe of masks, including a favourite or two, and regular Zoom dates with old friends we’d lost touch with and wonder why.

Annoyed as we are with the phrase “new normal”, it actually is a thing, and we have learned to live in it. We feed the birds. We get on with it.

But much to our surprise, we have also discovered a sixth stage: the stage of learning something hard.

People, we hear, have developed interesting obsessions - or obsessive interests, to be more precise. Stargazing.

Solving Rubik’s cubes. Sourdough bread – that complex holy grail for home bakers. Learning a new language (there’s an app for that!). Genealogy. Chess has made a comeback. Learning to code and why not? Model railroading. Guitar.

Robotics. Tatting.

Who knew that beneath our busy lives, there lurked a previously undiscovered urge to learn something hard, something that takes time, determination, persistence, and devotion? And that from this, we could derive a calming and rewarding sort-of- satisfaction?

Maybe, just maybe, having battled through denial, and anger, and bargaining, and depression, we finally arrived at not simply acceptance, but a burst of joy.

n the beginning, we were flapping around banging into things, not sure of how we could possibly adjust to radical changes in our way of navigating the world. It came upon us suddenly. We weren’t prepared. We were busy. We had no time for this!

We, like everyone else on earth, seemed to through the stages of grief for our lost lifestyles.

First there was denial, of course. This couldn’t really be happening. Not really.

But we got masks and put them on, feeling awkward and foolish for a while.

Waiting in line for the grocery store was irritating. Some refused and proudly announced to anyone who would listen, that they just left. The line was too long! Young folks working in stores, with obvious trepidation, reminded their elders to put on a mask or “please maintain distance”.

It didn’t take long for stage two to set in. Anger. The tantrum phase. And the anger was frustratingly undirected, so we just fired off at any moving target: the neighbours, the government, China, storekeepers, fellow shoppers, scientists, facts.

Stage three. We tried bargaining with the virus but with little success. The virus, it seems, holds all the cards. “Surely I can just socialize with these few friends”.

ometimes it’s difficult to draw the line between sports and life. At times they have more in common than they have differences. Such is the case of the American political scene and the absence of sports during the fall and winter of 2020. Football remains king, whether it’s of the NFL variety or of the US college scene. Let’s not forget what many regard as real football and we, the uneducated, call soccer. By the way, what is a Bundesliga?

At this time of year, we’re usually settling into the NHL and NBA seasons; but this year we’re going to have to put those leagues on hold. We Canadians who are not hooked on Netflix and binge watching the Crown need some sort of entertainment. Back to my opening line: it appears that the politics south of the border have become somewhat of a blood sport.

There’s never been so much vitriol between the Democrats and the Republicans. Trump and Biden, along

with their minions are engaging in a constant war of words, with every new day bringing more accusations and slander. It all culminated in the Super Bowl of all elections which occurred this past November 3rd. That game however has gone into overtime, an overtime that’s lasted weeks, just to keep our attention. Now we are into an official review, and the referees are looking at the replays to ensure who actually won.

The US networks have also gotten in on the act with CNN supporting Biden like a favourite son who can do no wrong, and FOX News backing Trump, oblivious to his childish antics. Add COVID-19 to the mix, with the tragic updates of lives lost every day, and you’ve created a must-watch event.

As Canadians, we observe what’s going in the U.S. with a sort of morbid curiosity, thankful that we live in a much more peaceful society. America was built on the ideals of a unanimous pronouncement called the “Declaration of Independence”. One important phrase from the Declaration states that all Americans shall have the rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.

In 2020 we’ve seen the erosion of this profound statement, and we’re all the worse for it.

& Happy New Year Legion Riders Support a Most Excellent Cause

he Legion Riders Korea Unit is a very special group of Canadian Legion motorcycle enthusiasts. Each is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and many are veterans or sons and daughters of veterans. One of the things that makes this unit special is the cause they work to support: homeless Canadian veterans.

Members don’t have to own a motorcycle; all that’s needed is a desire to help.

“We raised $20 000 last year,” says Legion Riders executive member and event coordinator,

Mike Berthiaume, whose father delivered mail to other soldiers on a motorcycle during World War II. “Our goal was to raise as much this year, but…”

That but is the pandemic which has deeply cut into many social activities, including fundraising for charities. The Riders expect to fall a little short this year.

However, the community has been extremely generous. The Riders have raised money with coin drives, and Legion Branches regularly contribute from their Poppy Funds. Unfortunately, the unit’s biggest money-maker, a poker run, has been cancelled due

to social distancing measures to cut the COVID spread.

On November 21, the Korea Unit hosted its first spaghetti dinner at the Cornwall Legion.

The Riders served two sittings of fifty people in the Legion hall.

“This was a zero-cost event,” says Berthiaume. “All of the food, everything was donated by local grocery stores and unit members.”

He says that the Legion Riders Korea Unit expresses its sincere thanks to both Food Basics

Cornwall locations, No Frills Cornwall, Your Independent Grocers of Cornwall, and the Wholesale Club of Cornwall.

Over the last 8 years, the Riders, along with the Canadian Army Veterans, have raised over $140 000 locally to help house veterans.

The Legion Riders Korea Unit, based out of Lancaster Branch 544, officially celebrated their first anniversary in October.

A Light Show to Celebrate the Holidays at Gray’s Creek

The RUFFO Report with Perry Ruffo

elcome to the 24th edition of the RUFFO Report. For the past 2 years, I’ve enjoyed sharing local stories and personal opinions. The last few months have been difficult because of the lack of local sports, but the memories I have from the past 24 editions make me smile. Many Falcons vs.

Panthers stories, the Sisters Cup, Charity Bowl, Bishop Cup, sports awards, EOSSAA & OFSAA. Local athletes moving on to play at college, university, provincial and national levels. Showcasing my two daughters, my mom’s bowling team, and my wife’s students.

Ceramist Ann Marlin Inducted into the Arts Hall of Fame Along with 10 Other Outstanding Citizens and Artists from Cornwall

Ann Marlin’s journey with clay began in the early 1970’s when there was a Ceramics Club hosted at the Bob Turner Centre. She later acquired her own equipment and set up a studio at home. She also took many workshops in and out of the country to learn different techniques to use when working with clay.

The annual pottery show has always featured a silent auction in support of the various charities in Cornwall. For the past four years, the focus charity has been the Agape Centre’s Empty Bowls Project. “Each participating potter donates a couple of soup bowls and throughout the show’s demonstrations, additional bowls are made. These bowls are fired here and glazed, and we usually end up with over 100 soup bowls for the Agape Centre, so this is a worthwhile project,” explains Marlin.

Describing what working with clay is like, Marlin states, “Clay is definitely a hands-on medium. Your hands become your eyes - your fingers tell you the consistency of the clay, whether the clay is centred on the wheel, the walls are too thick or too thin, and so on. Learn to XC Ski For Kids and Adults

gain this winter season, the Jackrabbit Program for kids aged 3 to 12 will be offered by the Summerstown Coyote Nordiq Club, an entity of the Friends of the Summerstown Trails. The Jackrabbit Program is a national program developed and delivered by CrossCountry Ski Canada.

The Jackrabbit Program is named after Herman “Jackrabbit” Johansen, a Norwegian credited with introducing cross-country skiing to Canada and the United States in the 1920s and 30s. The overall objective of the Jackrabbit Program is to assist children aged 3 to 12 in developing a love of the outdoors, a healthy lifestyle, and a good level of physical fitness using cross-country skiing, focusing on fun activities and games.

ccording to coach Jeff Carter, the altered COVID-19 hockey season continues to drag on with no changes of opponents in sight for the Char Lan Jr. B team. The team has played six non-contact scrimmages versus Alexandria Glens, with no games in November due to the region’s orange level.

Cornwall Wildcats’ Fall Flag Football Season

he Cornwall Wildcats’ fall football season looked a little different than it has in the past. Instead of regular tackle football, a flag football season was implemented.

“Normally we are a tackle football organization. We would be playing tackle football in the spring, summer, and fall,” said Kirby Camplin, President of the Cornwall Wildcats.

“But flag football was so successful that I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of continuing with some sort of a flag program when this is all over. The unintended consequence was that we attracted new athletes – athletes who were maybe afraid to try or weren’t interested in playing tackle football.

Now they have a taste for the game, they like football, and they want more of it.”

There were 150 youth between the ages of 9 and 17 years old who signed

up for the fall program. They were split into four age groups, and each group practiced on a different night of the week. The 10-week program started at the end of August and ran until the championship games on Nov. 1.

“Over the course of the season it was great watching kids improve and get better. In the first couple of weeks, especially at the younger age groups, probably 20 per cent of all balls thrown were caught. By the end of the season kids were catching 70-80 per cent of balls thrown their way,” Camplin expressed.
