Swimming with the Sea Lions: Alumna Kennady Kilger

W

hen Kennady Kilger, 17, arrived in Fiji this summer as part of the Junior Pan-Pacific Swim Team, a Cornwall Sea Lions’ swim cap could be found in her bag.

Kennady began swimming before she could walk. At three months old she took her first swim lesson, and at seven years old she started swimming with the Sea Lions.

“I swam with the Sea Lions for seven years and some of my most favourite memories were travelling to swim meets and competing with other swimmers around Ontario and Canada,” expressed Kennady. “I really enjoyed the team atmosphere, cheering other Cornwall Sea Lion swimmers and trying to always beat my personal best times.”

Now she swims with the Toronto Swim Club, training 18 hours a week in the pool and another three hours in the gym. She recently made the Junior Pan-Pacific Swim Team and was chosen to represent Canada in Fiji in August. Kennady swam in the

200 freestyle, the 100 butterfly, and relays.

“It was an amazing experience to swim internationally and swim against top swimmers in the world!

I was nervous, but our Canadian team and coaches were super supportive of each other—very motivating,” Kennady shared. “We got to fly together, train together, and rely on each other for support and encouragement for two weeks. It was an experience I will never forget.

This experience also taught me the level and speed of other international swimmers, which is good for me to want to continue to chase my dreams.”

From a young age, competing at the Olympics has been Kennady’s dream. She said as she is getting older, turning that dream into a reality takes “a lot of work, dedication, commitment, and support from many people.”

Paula McDermid

October’s Mom of the Month is local television personality and yoga entrepreneur Paula McDermid.

In addition to owning and operating Love Yoga in Cornwall, Paula is the mother of three children: eight-year-old Helaina and seven-year-old twins Seamus and Teagan.

The McDermid family is busy pretty much year-round with a combination of taekwondo, swimming, gymnastics, and soccer. In addition to her general duties as sports mom, Paula is the kids’ soccer coach.

“I think it’s important for children to learn to work as a team, to problem solve, to be tolerant of others, and to

experience success and failure,” she says of sports for young people. Paula also believes in the importance of education for kids: She serves as the Parent Council Chair at her children’s school.

Finally, Paula and her staff at Love Yoga spend time working for, and with, the community. Love Yoga has been involved with both S.A.S.S. and Beyond 21.

An Interview with Phil Roy

P

hil Roy has been involved in the hockey world for most of his life, from playing to coaching. Roy played junior A in Cornwall for two seasons before going to Clarkson as a player.

After graduating from Clarkson in 2000, Roy quickly became involved in the coaching world.

For the last 13 years, Roy has been coaching hockey. For the last seven of those, Roy has been the assistant coach at Clarkson.

As of this past June, Roy was able to become the new head coach and general manager of the Notre Dame Hounds Junior A Team in Wilcox, Saskatchewan.

So far, Roy has been enjoying this new experience.

“It’s been good, obviously a lot of change that comes with it, especially with a family of three young kids. Selling the house in New York State, finding a new house in Regina, finding a new school for the kids,” says Roy. “The fact that I’m taking the next step in my development as a head coach and GM, it’s been

really busy but very rewarding, with the development of the craft as coach.”

So far, his season with the new team is going well. They’ve played five exhibition games and three regular season games, one of which was played against the Humboldt Broncos.

“It was an emotional night for our guys. We’ve got a decent start. We’ve got a lot of injuries right now even though it’s early,” says Roy. “I think we’ve got seven guys right now out of line-up early in the year.”

In terms of why Roy loves coaching so much, he says it’s in part because it’s the second-best job in the world.

“If people are wondering what the first one is, well the first one is playing professional hockey,” says Roy. “To be able to have a salary and play a game, that’s a pretty cool experience. Being a coach and being able to develop players; that’s what gets me excited.”

Roy’s passionate about the sport and about being able to see his team develop.

“To be able to help guys attain their level, to develop them, to work on their strengths, and continue to develop their

Photo Submitted strengths and identify their weaknesses, and work cohesively with them, that’s what gets me excited in the morning. In that sense, it’s been fun,” says Roy. According to Roy, his work as a coach can be broken down to two things: the team’s culture and identity.

“The culture is who we are off-ice, what Notre Dame is all about as a school

and obviously that it’s a Junior A program and our identity is who we are on the ice,” says Roy. “Part of the reason I got this job is obviously the experience I have with the college side, knowing what’s expected once they get there, knowing what the other programs are looking for and obviously my job here is to bridge that gap and try and promote as many players as we can.”

After so many years as a coach, what would Roy say his favourite memory is?

It’s hard for him to pick just one.

“From playing at the TD Garden Championship game against BC to last year at Clarkson having our best season of the last decade; like 15 games unbeaten streak, going to Lake Placid and going to the finals in the NCA tournament, being ranked first in the nation for 24 hours or having two guys sign NHL deals at the season end last year. There’s a lot that comes to mind,” says Roy. “Most recently for me is being part of Clarkson’s staff and helping to recapture the Clarkson Golden Knight and get the program back to where it belongs, so that was pretty rewarding as an alumni to be part of that.”

Cornwall Colts: Konnor MacCormick

V

eteran Cornwall Colts’ player, Konnor MacCormick, is back for his fourth season. With a slow start to the season, MacCormick said that the team is starting to work together.

“As of last game, we started putting the puck in the net and we dominated that game. It’s all about gelling, because we have so many new guys.

So it was nice to see last game we actually did that,” said MacCormick.

Being a veteran player comes with more responsibilities for MacCormick.

“It’s a little different as a veteran, because sometimes you have to be the bad guy and step up and tell guys if they’re doing something wrong. But you also have to back what you’re saying up on the ice. It’s a little

more pressure being a veteran but I don’t mind it at all. I like it,” shared MacCormick.

MacCormick said when he started with the Colts as a 16-year-old; there were many veterans who helped him.

After breaking his knee the first game of his first year with the Colts, it was veteran Colts’ players who pushed him to get back into shape and encouraged him throughout his recovery.

With a great set of Cornwall Colts’ fans at every game, MacCormick said the team always plays better in front of the home crowd. The hecklers do not go unnoticed, and MacCormick said they are funny to listen to during the games. By the end of the season MacCormick hopes to land a hockey scholarship.

“My goal is to get a Division I scholarship,” said MacCormick. “But

Patrice Volny Wins NABO Middleweight Title Fight Held at Ed Lumley Arena

F

or the second time in 15 months a North American Championship title belt has been won in a boxing ring at the Civic Complex in Cornwall.

In June of 2017, fighting for only the second time in his hometown, Tony Luis won the vacant WBA lightweight belt by defeating the previously unbeaten Cam O’Connell.

This time it was a WBO middleweight belt changing hands with Montreal’s Patrice Volny 12-0 (8 KO’s) winning the title with a unanimous decision over champion Albert Onolunose of Calgary 23-2 (7 KO’s).

The fight was hard fought, close, and many of the early rounds could have gone either way. Volny took control from the 6th round on, winning by a wide margin on the judges’ scorecards. In the co- main event welterweight Dierry Jean of Montreal 30-2 with 21 knockouts, made his return to the ring after more than two years away, stopping Mexican journeyman Abraham

Gomez 28-16 (13 ko’s) on a 6th rnd TKO. Jean, in constant control of the fight, started to find the range in the 5th round, and was landing many hard clean shots when the referee jumped in, stopping the fight with thirty seconds left in the 6th. The thirty-sixyear-old Dierry Jean whose only two losses came in world title challenges still appears to have lots left – it will be interesting to see where his career goes from here.

On the undercard fights Mazlum Akdeniz 6-0 of Montreal remained unbeaten with a unanimous decision over Victor Campos of Mexico in a welterweight fight. In cruiserweight action, Devin Tomko of Winnipeg raised his record to 5-0 with a 2nd round KO of Markhalle Wedderburn of Calgary. Cornwall native Joe Bowman, a two-time Canadian champion in the amateur ranks made a very successful pro debut winning every round against his tough Mexican opponent Jiar Baltazar.

Pro Boxing Needs a National Commission

I

love boxing, I will to my dying day. When two equally skilled competitors square off and all is fair and unbiased there is no sport more pure or more honest. Both competitors leave it all in the ring, embrace, and know and respect each other in a way no one can understand. But fighters, pro fighters, are but pawns in a game of chess where they are controlled and moved to suit the promoters’ needs and wants to make money. This is why we need a national commission to govern the sport.

Boxing starts in the amateurs. The amateurs are governed by a national and provincial governing board and are associated with an international governing body with rules under an umbrella that governs rules, matches, tournaments, etc. In amateur boxing, to be a coach and trainer, you must have a police records check, you must take coaching courses and apprentice before you move up to next level. In the pros? You simply work a boxer in the gym, pay a license fee to the provincial or state commission and presto you are a licensed trainer.

You don’t need to apprentice, to take

courses, or pass a test. Simply pay and you are a trainer.

Commissions need to have trainers pass tests for starters. Pro boxing is capitalism at its best and worst. It’s wild wild west. It’s really no different than in other eras. In Roman days the gladiators would fight to death in the coliseum. They were slaves owned by rich men or prisoners of war. If they fought well they made some coins; became legends, and an exceptional gladiator could earn his freedom from his master after many victories.

Fast forward to the slavery days in the USA. Where black slaves were pitted against each other in fist fights, pit fights; bets were taken, exchanges were made. The good slave who won ate a little better, got treated a little better, and could possibly earn their freedom after many fights and years of “service” to their master.

Fast forward to today. In my opinion it’s not much better.

Promoters basically do as they like.

If the fighters don’t perform they get left behind, good fighters get picked up and signed to contracts. However with no national commission to enforce rules and contracts it’s left in the hands of civil suits and civil

matters. Contracts are not respected, not upheld, not respected; promoters move the goal posts as needed. The rules are changed along the way usually not in the favor of the fighter.

The NHL has a players’ union and an agent guild. There are rules, players have recourse, agents and owners have to fulfill obligations or release the players. The NFL has similar rules, guilds, and a players union.

Baseball the same. Pro boxing is governed by provincial and state commissions with rules that have no bite or effect on promoters who do as they like while fighters lose money and opportunities and are taken advantage of.

Boxers and MMA fighters are the most exploited athletes in the world.

And even in civil court the boxer does not get justice. Boxing and MMA need a national commission to oversee boxing properly; a unified set of rules that all provinces would adhere to.

Rules for fighters, matches, minimum purses and rules and statutes for contracts with fighters that would allow promoters to make money and protect them. Force the promoters to pay what the boxers are owed and

force promoters to respect contracts.

Most promoters know most fighters cannot afford to fight injustice civilly.

A national commission could put rules and statutes in place to force promoters to play fairly. As Larry Holmes told me “the only way a fighter beats the game is by saving his money, putting the sugar packs away” or in the case of Floyd Mayweather and Conner MacGregor they became bigger than the game. They generate so much interest and money that they dictate policy to the promoters.

Instead of them taking the smaller slice of pie, they take the bigger half and pay the promoter of their choice and the promoter has to accept the smaller slice of the pie. Is Floyd making 3-4 hundred million too much or obscene? The interest and money is there. If the fighters who take the punishment make sacrifices, train, sweat, bleed why should the promoters make the majority of the money? I love Floyd Mayweather and I love boxing. When it’s done right it’s the sport of kings. We need a national commission to make it right.

Monique and Andy Patenaude

Monique was born and raised in Quebec City. She grew up in an Air Force family, so travelled around eastern Canada including Halifax, Montreal, Northern Quebec, and Hull. She worked for the Federal Government in their I.T. Department in Revenue and Taxation and then Supply Services. She left the government to continue her career in private industry until 1994. She and Andy met at work. They are both “techies”. Andy was a single dad raising three boys. They married in 1979.

Her hobbies of quilting and golf keep Monique busy year round.

She doesn’t know which one she enjoys the most. Monique and Andy have competed in district, regional, provincial, and Canada Games. The events she has enjoyed over the years are cribbage, euchre, lawn bowling, 8 ball pool, carpet bowling, and golf at the district level. Monique has been a board member and our district coordinator in the past. She convened the Regional Golf Tournament in 2013 when District 8 was the host. She won a gold medal in that tournament.

Andy was born and raised in Granby, Quebec. He came to Ottawa in 1959 to work for the Federal Government in the Payroll and Pension Department. When he and Monique first retired they sold their home and belongings and became first time RV’ers. For six months they would live in Corpus Christi, Texas and the rest of the year in a trailer park in Prescott and area. Andy said they met some wonderful people during those years. Their mutual friend Ann Cook told Andy and Monique about OSGA; an Ontario organization mandated to keep seniors active in a fun way.

They were hooked.

Andy started competing in 2006 in a Provincial Golf Tournament in Oshawa and two years later, when Monique was 55 years old, she started to compete. Over the years their total medals include 17 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze.

Andy’s hobbies include golf, curling (Morrisburg Curling Rink), reading, and fishing with his son on Lake Simcoe.

Andy discovered how much fun he could have at OSGA competitions. He tries to recruit new members every year.

Both Monique and Andy are examples of today’s young seniors. We are happy to have them as part of our District 8 Family. Ricky Latreille Talks Multisport

R

icky Latreille is an avid outdoors person with a passion for athletics and producing maple syrup.

He attended college in Kentucky on a golf scholarship and is currently a scout for the Hawkesbury Hawks Hockey Club while also being employed by the provincial government.

Next, Latreille plans on focusing on and improving his running and cycling. His eyes are set on training for a marathon in the near future.

First, though, Latreille has a few things on his plate.

In his spare time, Latreille also participates as a member of the Cornwall Multisport Club.

“I had been thinking about becoming a member for a couple years but was uncertain if my fitness level was up to par with other members. After speaking to the club president Ritchie Croney, I was soon brought up to speed that all levels of athletes were welcome and also encouraged to participate in both the training sessions and club events,” says Latreille. “The reassurance and mentorship that the club provides to those that are new is incredible.”

“I am participating in the Army Run in Ottawa on September 23, where I will be completing my first halfmarathon. To further push myself I registered for the ‘Commanders Challenge’ which includes a 5km run an hour prior to the 21 km halfmarathon,” shares Latreille. “So far this year I have competed in nine different races with plans on completing three more. Zeroing in on my nutrition and how to fuel my body pre, during, and post training is something that I will continue to work and improve on.”

Latreille frequently attends duathlon training with the club in St Andrews on Monday nights and has been supported in his cycling endeavours by those that excel in the sport.

In terms of what Latreille likes most about the multisport club, he says it has a lot to do with bringing people together.

“Rob Lefebvre, Chris Belair, and others are often sharing their expertise in regards to body positioning, overall technique, and transitioning from the bicycle to the running event,” says Latreille.

Latreille has been consistently participating in duathlon training throughout the 2018 season, while also attending some interval training to help improve his running.

“I meet up with club members regularly for short and long runs. The camaraderie that I have developed with some club members has been beneficial for keeping me motivated with respect to my training,” says Latreille. “I enjoy how the variety of sports keeps my training from becoming monotonous.”

“It brings members of all ages and skill levels together in a nonjudgemental and encouraging environment,” says Latreille. “The positivity and optimism that members bring to all events is eye opening, infectious, and leads us away from the negativity that can sometimes be part of our daily life.”

rad Robertson cut his teeth coaching young teens, but today he finds himself at the helm of the Seaway Valley Rapids Novice A team, working with eight-year-olds.

“It’s definitely a challenge,” he says.

Robertson has been involved in coaching hockey off and on for almost 20 years. He played competitively until his bantam year when he was sidelined by an eye injury. Fortunately, he is able to play hockey again and is doing so with the Cornwall Blues. Additionally, he is certified with the NCCP and holds the prestigious HighPerformance Certification.

n 1865 American poet Walt Whitman wrote, “O Captain! My Captain!” as a mournful tribute to the recently assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. If Walt were alive today he could have easily written about the death and dearth of NHL hockey captains, specifically in Canada. Once a treasured, time honoured tradition, NHL teams now avoid naming a captain, like a gambler avoids filing income tax. In fact before Aleksander Barkov was named captain of the Panthers in September, 10 of the 31 NHL teams were sans captain. Yeah your math is correct, that’s about a third of all NHL teams.

In Canada 4 of 7 franchises have no on-ice leader. Hallowed franchises like Montreal and Toronto have a nasty history of captains not finishing their careers with their respective teams. The last eight Maple Leaf and the last nine Habs captains have not retired as captains with their teams.

Harold Ballard, (the Eugene Melynk of the Toronto hockey scene from the 60’s to 80’s) staged a verbal war with two of the Leafs’ greatest captains; Dave Keon and Darryl Sittler. Under Ballard’s rule Toronto went into a losing tailspin that they’re just now recovering from. Now the Toronto brain trust has come up with a three alternate captain arrangement; which is confusing since their best player Auston Matthews isn’t even an alternate. In Ottawa the captain was too expensive, and the previously mentioned penny pinching owner Eugene Melnyk would have none of that, so he showed Erik the way to San Jose. Montreal’s true leader and captain is their goalie Carey Price, and he’s not allowed to wear the “C”.

I guess that having no captain is just a sign of the times. Few seem to want the responsibility, and even fewer wear the title well. Oh well, we can always celebrate Ovie, he’s a captain in the old-time tradition, a great leader for others to emulate! Otherwise in the NHL it’s “O Captain! No Captain!”

Fishing with Ben Houle

F

ifteen-year-old Ben Houle is in grade ten at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, plays hockey with the Seaway Valley Rapids Midget AA hockey team, plays lacrosse and also loves to play a variety of video games. When Houle isn’t doing any of those things, you can find him out on the water, fishing, whenever he can.

“I love being outside either on or by the water” says Houle. “I love the challenge of fishing because you never know what you will catch that day or even if you will catch anything at all. I also love coming back home with my catch and cleaning it, cooking, and then eating it.”

Houle says his earliest fishing memory is hitting the water with his grandfather.

“If it weren’t for him I’m not sure if I would be fishing today. He introduced me to fishing when I was about five years old,” says Houle.

“The first thing he did with me was on one rainy night. He dressed me in my rubber boots, rain coat, and headlamp and showed me how to catch worms so we would have our bait to use for the next time we went out fishing. I will always remember the time when I was seven years old and my grandpa and I were out fishing, and I caught my first walleye.

Boy, I was so excited trying to reel that monster in. That was the exact moment that I became hooked.”

Houle says he has many fishing memories, but if he had to pick one, it would be from this past winter.

“My dad and I went deep sea fishing in Cancun. Now that was

an experience! I caught two mahi mahi, one of which I was told by our guide was a trophy fish,” says Houle. “I also caught a tuna and a king mackerel. Each one was about a five minute fight in trying to reel them in. Honestly, there are no words to describe the feeling of reeling in those fish.”

Houle’s favourite place to fish, though, would be in Florida at his grandma and grandpa’s home.

“Every winter I look forward to going visit them. They have a lake right by their house. Every day I pack up my fishing gear, hop on my hover board and make my way down to the lake to see what I can catch,” says Houle. “So far, I’ve caught bass, tilapia, and catfish. There was one year that my sister even caught a turtle. The whole time I’m fishing I get to keep my eye on the alligators that live in the lake. It’s very relaxing and exciting all at the same time.”

To convince people to give fishing a try, Houle would tell them “that they have to at least try it once. It may seem boring at first, but once you have your first bite and experience the sudden excitement of reeling in a fish you will be hooked just like I was my first time.”

According to Houle, it’s fun catching any kind of fish, but pike, bass, and walleye are his favourite catches.

Houle does have one goal when it comes to fishing, though. “I know that it will probably never happen, but after watching the TV show River Monsters, I would love to try fishing on the Amazon River to catch an alligator gar,” says Houle.

Cornwall Multisport Club’s Future is in Good Hands

he Cornwall Multisport Club Kids’ Day Run was the club’s annual July event for youth under 16 years old. There were four age groups with different suggested distances for the runners.

Rafeek Mohamed and Jim Peace were the race coordinators.

Each participant received a medal, and special awards were given to the first-place boy and girl in each age group. This event was free to all participants and refreshments and snacks were also provided, courtesy of Wendy’s and Subway restaurants. This year 104.5 Fresh Radio shared their day with the athletes by handing out free sunglasses and Frisbees.

The Cornwall Multisport Club Kids’ Day Run has seen an increase in participation every year.

This year 125 kids participated; an increase of 25 per cent from last summer. Kids who participated in the past spread the word to their friends about how much fun they had, and participation grew.

The Cornwall Multisport Club is a running and triathlon club located in Eastern Ontario. The purpose of the Cornwall Multisport Club is to get more people from Cornwall and the Seaway Valley to participate in physical activities. The club’s main focus is on running and the sports related to triathlon. The club’s mandate is to have fun, make new friends who share common interests, and motivate each other to do well.

As a rookie Panther, Camrin’s favourite class is physical education, and she says that the number of students in high school is the biggest adjustment from elementary.

Meet Ingrid Holstad Berge of the Ontario Hockey Academy

ornwall’s Ontario Hockey Academy (OHA) is full of talented hockey players. This month, we want you to meet 18-year-old forward Ingrid Holstad Berge of OHA Tardiff (a post graduate student).

Holstad Berge says she made the decision to come to Canada and attend OHA because hockey is Canada’s national sport as well as the fact that OHA provides an excellent opportunity to train, play, and compete against the best female athletes in the world. OHA’s Academic Program is also very strong and Holstad Berge says she knew graduation from OHA meant she could attend school anywhere in the world.

Avoiding Injury

o matter which sport you choose to participate in, injuries can and do occur. Karate is no different and like the other sports many, if not most of them can be prevented from ever happening in the first place. With many karate practitioners returning to class in the fall after a few months away, along with the new students starting, now is a good time to address injury prevention. Karate is a sport that during a two hour class will provide you with a full body workout with a good blend of anaerobic and aerobic activity. A good way to prepare your muscles is to do a warm-up using a mix of stretching and karate drills done at slower speeds with no fast twists, turns, or pivots. Kicks, punches, kata, and self-defence techniques all require some degree of pivoting, and twisting, and doing so at full speed without being properly warmed up is creating an injury risk.

Common injuries are sprains and strains often caused by over use or improper technique. Repetition is a key element to developing proficient technical skill and this often means hundreds and even thousands of reps. It is important for an instructor to place emphasis on good form as opposed to speed and power on the majority of these repetitions.

Be cautious until your conditioning level improves, fatigue can lead to poor technique which can lead to injury. It is also a good idea to pay close attention your surroundings during class – the dojo can be quite crowded sometimes and developing good spatial awareness will help to avoid collisions or standing too close and either striking, or getting struck, by a fellow student. Cooling down near the end of class is also very important. Your heart has been pumping blood to your muscles for well over an hour and care should be taken to slow things down. A proper cool down can help prevent being stiff and sore later on. This is frequently accomplished by performing kata, self-defence, or speciality training at a slower speed; placing emphasis on form and flow. Here are a few tips to help avoid injury 1) Try to arrive a few minutes before class and do a bit of light stretching and rotations of joints using natural movement. 2) Know your body – Don’t train if you have a pain. Pain indicates a problem and you need to pay attention to the warning signs. 3) Injury history – Previous injury to a muscle or joint can develop into a chronic issue. It is very important to warm up and stretch previously injured parts. 4) Don’t train every day.

Rest days allow muscles and connective tissue time to heal between training sessions. 5) Stay hydrated – even mild levels of de-hydration can have a negative impact. If you haven’t consumed an adequate amount of fluids your body will lack the ability to cool itself down using perspiration and evaporation. Proper warm-up and cool down, combined with hydration, common sense and awareness can go a long way in preventing unnecessary injuries.

Jr B Rebels looking good

he junior B hockey season in Char Lan is off to a great start this fall.

The Rebels have earned 6 out of a possible 8 points in the first four games of the 2018-19 season, winning two and losing one each in a shootout and in overtime.

Needless to say, Coach Jeff Carter is happy with his Rebels, especially when he remembers the start his team had a year ago. “We had a lot of injuries to start last season,” he says. “We won 20 games and finished in sixth place.”

This season the Rebels have lost some top players. Both Parker Tallman and Liam MacDonald are playing for the Cornwall Colts, while Sam Goudreau has moved on to the Hurst

Lumberjacks, but Carter takes all of that in stride. “We are a great steppingstone for players looking to break into junior A,” he says.

On the plus side, however, both Dawson Irving and Grant Craig are back to split net-minding duties for the Rebels; Brennan Markell, Sam Ferland, and Mathieu Sabourin have returned to the line-up, and the Rebels have added some talented newcomers to the roster.

Local hockey fans will be familiar with names like Dillon Spinner.

Coach Carter is fully expecting big things for the team. “We want to finish in the top six this year,” he says. “We want a playoff spot.” Anyone who wants to catch a Rebels’ game can catch a tilt at the Char Lan Recreation Centre at 8 PM most Saturday nights.

I hope you enjoy # 71 I never imagined watching a Junior A hockey game on TV would bring tears to my eyes, but it did back on Sept 12th as I watched the Humboldt Broncos home opener on TSN. I can’t imagine the pain the surviving players, the families of the 29 people on that bus and the community are facing and the challenges that lie ahead for them. The one bond they cling to is the great game of hockey, and sandwiched between a very entertaining Jr A hockey game between the Humboldt Broncos and Nipiwin Hawks was a very classy ceremony to honour the members of last year’s Broncos team. I watched it all, from start to finish, congrat’s to the players, the organizers, and the city of Humboldt for a job well done under such difficult circumstances, and to TSN for the excellent, thoughtful coverage of the game and the tragedy that happened last April. In the end, we are all “Humboldt Strong” Back to the Senators and the Erik Karlsson trade. Under the circumstances, I think Pierre Dorion came out ok on this one. (Much better than the Mike Hoffman deal) It was quite evident Karlsson did not want to re-sign in Ottawa, and no team needs a player who does not want to be there, especially if that player is considered

“My favourite memory was when the Lady Panthers went to OFSAA in Oshawa. Not everybody gets to go to OFSAA, and it was an amazing experience. We won 3 of our 5 games, so we had a winning record. We also got to play with some really good players and to see what rugby is like at the next level.”

a franchise player. Most teams that are trying to land a player like Karlsson, feel they are close to competing for a cup and, unless they have a disgruntled high-end player, are not willing to move an asset they would consider to be a piece of the puzzle. Imagine the attitudes the disgruntled, Sen’s fans would have had if Dorion would have held on to Karlsson this season, and ended up losing Karlsson like the Islanders did with John Tavares, (for nothing in return). Time will tell how this plays out. Chris Tierney with 17 goals and 23 assists last year will fit in with Ottawa’s top six forwards. I still remember when the hockey world came crashing down, the year 1988, and the Edmonton Oilers traded the best player in the world, (Wayne Gretzky) to the LA Kings. Someone forgot to tell the remaining Oilers how terrible they would be without Wayne, and they went on to win the cup in 1990.

I’m not saying Ottawa is close to a cup team, but last year they ended up in 30th place, and Karlsson was in the lineup. It’s time for fans to move on. If they don’t get behind their team, in a few years they may have to stay up late and catch the San Francisco Senators on the late CBC game Any old-timers’ teams out there looking for a goalie? Steve Ostler may be available to get on the ice a little more this year. Steve and wife Patty are retiring and closing their store, Schulman’s, this month. Sports Energy wishes them a long and happy retirement.

October’s Athlete of the Month is a multi-sport athlete who plays hockey with the minor Atom Seaway Valley Rapids, baseball with the Cornwall River Rats minor travelling team, and football with the Cornwall Wildcat tykes.

Evan and his team mates have won several baseball and

spring hockey tournaments. During the 2017-18 hockey season, he scored over 50 goals with the South Stormont Selects B rep team, and he earned Rookie of the Year honours with his spring football team.

When it comes to a favourite sport, Evan is hard pressed to choose between hockey and baseball. He enjoys sports because he has fun and gets to be around his friends. “He loves to compete,” says his father Brad.

According to his coaches, Evan is a talented and hard-working athlete who is also very coachable. At school, he enjoys gym and French.

round-robin In men’s quarter final action the Brad Jacobs’ team defeated Kingston’s Scott McDonald to advance. Veteran Glenn Howard easily handled Jason Gunnlagson with Howard stealing a 5-ender in the 3rd to win 9-0. Scotland’s Ross Patterson defeated Ottawa’s Steve Allen and Toronto’s John Epping defeated the USA Olympic Gold Medal winner John Shuster with a cold draw to the 8 foot on the last shot of the game.

In the men’s semi- finals Brad Jacobs easily handled Glenn Howard with an 8-3 win and John Epping handed Ross Patterson a 5-2 loss to move into the final with defending champ Brad Jacobs.

Both teams went undefeated in the round-robin. Some early misses by the Jacobs’ team and some great shot making allowed Epping to come to the 8th end up by three with Jacobs having hammer. The newly revamped Epping team with Craig Savill at the lead position and 2nd Brent Laing was not to be denied and is now 2018 Shorty Jenkins Champions.

On the Ladies’ side in quarter final play Cornwall’s Jennifer Harvey with Stephanie Barbeau at 3rd, Lise Lalonde at 2nd, and Kelly McLeod playing lead defeated defending champion Jamie Sinclair from the USA to advance to the semi-finals. In other

quarter final action Isabella Wrana from Sweden defeated Mary Anne Arsenault from Halifax. Silvana Tirinzoni defeated Jacqueline Harrison, and Hollie Duncan with a great shot in the final end defeated Danielle Inglis to advance to the semi.

In semi-final action Cornwall’s Jenn Harvey went down to defeat at the hands of eventual champ Isabell Wrana. Toronto’s Hollie Duncan made a great shot in the last end to defeat Silvana Tirinzoni to advance to the final.

The Ladies’ championship final between Duncan and Wrana was a hard fought affair going to an extra end with Isabella Wrana winning the 2018 Shorty Jenkins title.

The competition enjoyed great ice made by John Wall, Steve “Bubba’ Smith, and Jon King.

Great crowds all weekend enjoyed top calibre curling at its best.

The Curling Centre early events include the opening RBC Senior Curling Bonspiel commencing September 27th with the top 12 teams qualifying for the playoffs on October 12th.

The opening Bonspiel for the evening curlers will run from October 9th to the 13th. League play will start the week of October 6th.

presents Then and Now: Cornwall Colts Edition…Kyle Flanagan

E

ight hockey teams, spanning six leagues - Kyle Flanagan has played in a lot of different rinks and skated on countless ice surfaces during his hockey career. This includes playing for the Junior A Cornwall Colts at the Si Miller arena in Cornwall. “When I think of my time with the Colts, I quickly think of my time playing in the old arena, the Si Miller. It was the last year the team played there. The atmosphere was amazing. It felt like the fans were right on top of you, right there on the ice.”

Flanagan played with the Colts during the 2006-2007 season, his first in the CJHL. “What brought me to play for the Colts was the coaching staff, the people surrounding the team, and the proximity to home.

The Colts organization was a great one to play for.”

During his time with the Colts team, the left-handed winger played 44 games, tallying 42 points (18 goals

and 24 assists). Looking back at his time with the Junior A team, Flanagan feels that his time with the Colts was valuable time spent. “Playing for the Colts helped me in my hockey career. It helped my experience as a player since I was playing against older, stronger players. I learned a lot about the game, on and off the ice, from the coaches who had all played at the high levels of hockey that I was aspiring to.”

As a kid that was my biggest dream, to play at St. Lawrence alongside my brother. Everything else I’ve gotten to experience after that is just a bonus.”

Flanagan is an avid outdoorsman.

He spends most of his free time hiking and fishing in the forested areas and rivers of the North Country. Goose, his dog, is usually by Flanagan’s side.

Flanagan’s hockey career, which began with the Cornwall Colts in 2006-07, saw him play with affiliate teams to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Calgary Flames, and the Ottawa Senators.

Gilles Gaudet - Sports Enthusiast - It seems like every few years this question comes up in some form or other, and we begin to navel gaze and dream of a higher calibre hockey team in Cornwall. Our best product at present, the Cornwall Colts, drew an average of 859 customers last year. Over the last 10 years their attendance has ranged from Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports Newspaper 675 to 1141 fans per game. So to be fair and generous we could say that there are about 1,000 dedicated hockey loyalists in Cornwall. Over the past few years the Nationals and River Kings attendance numbers would bear out the 1,000 number. Last year the average attendance in the OHL was 4,059 paying customers. This number included Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports an average attendance high ofNewspaper 8,959 in London, to a low of 2,385 in North Bay. Most of the 20 cities that represent the OHL have a much larger population than Cornwall, so we’d be at an immediate disadvantage in trying to fill the rink. When the Royals left in 1992 low attendance was an issue, and I don’t think that anything that’s happened in the last 26 years has changed that fact. The truth is that we would need an owner with deeper than the Grand Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports Newspaper Canyon pockets. It would require an owner willing to lose big dollars for a long time until we had a championship type team in place. With a great team in place, we might be able to average 1,500 a game. Those don’t look like OHL numbers to me. Compared to 26 years ago, the average sports fan has many more sports diversions to spend their money on, and I’d be shocked if the OHL in Cornwall became one of those diversions.

Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach -The OHL left Cornwall in 1992, and much similar to the current proceedings in Ottawa, with the NHL Senators, it had to do with support or lack of support. Royal’s fans were spoiled under the ownership of Paul Emard. Coaches Orval Tessier, Doug Carpenter, and Bob Kilger guided our teams to three Memorial Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports Newspaper Cups. I won’t even begin to mention the future NHL players from both the Royals and their opponents who entertained us in their teenage years. The OHL is big (expensive) business today. The Royals left because we (the fans) took the on-ice product for granted. We didn’t like the owner, so we didn’t go to games. We didn’t like the fact the team switched from the QMJHL to the OHL, so we didn’t go to games. We didn’t like the parking, the seats, and the stairs at the complex, so we didn’t go to games. Will we like a new owner who may attempt a return to Cornwall? Will we embrace the OHL style, and appreciate watching all the future NHL stars? Will we flock to the complex and ignore its flaws for a few hours each week? Solid ownership, a huge commitment of corporate community support, and enough fans willing to shell out $20.00 - $25.00 per ticket, and yes Cornwall could support an OHL team once again.

Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club - 1808 is a decent attendance for an exhibition game where there is no real local attachment to either team. The North Bay Battalion had the lowest attendance in the OHL this past season, averaging 2385 fans per game, a number Cornwall would probably need to achieve to make a team feasible.

Cornwall had great success previously in QMJHL (1969-81), winning three Memorial Cups in a 10 year span, a feat that only one other team has accomplished in the 48 years that the CHL has been using the present format. From 1976-81, the Royals averaged close to 2400 per game, attracting fans from western Quebec as well as the local area.

With solid ownership, a strategic marketing plan, and a fair deal from the city it may be possible for an OHL team to flourish in Cornwall.

I would like to learn judo. I’m interested in learning judo because when I’m older I would love to be in a world championship and win in front of thousands of people. I would also love if I could be the best judo practitioner in the universe. I think some throws might be hard and some might be easy.

A throw is used to take down a competitor using leverage. You need to use your hips properly or it won’t work. Judo might be easy for me to learn because I do Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo evolved into Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Those are the reasons why I want to learn judo.

The sport I would like to learn how to do is skiing. I want to learn how to ski because I like that you would go very fast. One other thing I would like is the bumps. When I ride my scooter on a bumpy road it feels like I’m riding a wave. I think skiing would be like riding my scooter only faster and more exciting. I think that keeping your balance is the hard part of skiing. I would really like to try skiing.

At school there are two play structures that look like cars and I can fold my body and put my hands on the top bar of them. This move is easy for me and my friend. Most people can’t do it. I think I would be good at acro-dance.

Joe Bowman Wins Pro Debut

ornwall’s Joe Bowman, fighting out of Champs Eastside boxing gym made a very successful pro debut winning a decision over Jiar Baltazar, a tough opponent from Coatzacoalcos Mexico. Bowman, a two time Canadian amateur champion had been away from boxing for about ten years before returning to the sport a year ago. Bowman was in control of the fight from start to finish, landing several good combinations and winning every round on the judges’ scorecards.

In a post-fight interview with Sports Energy, Joe said that Baltazar was a heavy handed and tough opponent that came to fight. “I had no previous information on him other than he had two pro fights. I didn’t know anything about his amateur background, his style, where he’d been or what he had done. I just had to take things as they came - he came to fight and he came to win”.

On his boxing future, the twentynine-year-old father of four says –

“It’s a bit late in life to be starting a pro career, but I have the will and desire and I would like to go as far as I can. My big goal was to come back and tonight is the biggest night of my life”.

Joe gives a lot of credit to Jorge Luis who has trained him and worked his corner for years, first in the amateur ranks and now as a pro.

“Jorge always believed in me, he never gave up or lost hope, I’m proud to have him in my corner”.

Now that Joe Bowman has joined the “punch for pay” ranks, let’s take a look at Cornwall’s pro boxers. We have Tony Luis, the WBA North American lightweight champion, a fighter who is capable of defeating any lightweight in the world on any given night. Then there is Akwesasne’s Ronnie Robidoux, a former New York state Golden Gloves champion, now undefeated as a pro at 4-0. Now we add Joe Bowman, a two time Canadian champion. Ball fans had a great weekend at the Stormont County Fair ball tournament, with 29 teams playing in four divisions.

erby Champ at this year’s fair was Wes Bilmer, here with his son Dillon. Known as the ‘Derby King’ because he hasn’t missed one in 20 years, Wes drove his Bourgon Eavestroughing ‘91 Chevy Caprice to victory in the stock V8 class. Wes has won numerous times in various classes over the years, including taking three of five classes two years ago.

A Lost Villages Memory

Before there was Osnabruck District High School, there was Aultsville High School, which also produced some outstanding athletes.

According to “MEMORIES: A History of Aultsville High School. 1930-1957” , George Hickey coached the 1953/54 girls softball team.

Team members included Barbara Atchison, Beverley Wells, Carole Jarvis, Dallas Hollister, Connie Dafoe, Shirley Gallinger, Bonnie Hollister, Deana Wells and Marjory Stoddart.

Men’s Modified A Champs were the Rockies, Men’s B Champs were the MC Royals, Dixon Cider took the Mixed 3 Pitch A championship and the Expos won the B crown.

The Moe’s Valuable Player Award, presented each year in memory of the late Maureen Loynachan, went to Shawn “Bird” McRae. Kudos to the organizing committee and volunteers for a job well done!

Lacrosse Star to the Rescue!

hey say that lacrosse players are pretty tough. Here is an old time story that may prove the point. In September 1897, the local paper reported the town of Cornwall was over-run with thugs and highwaymen. The citizens were in an uproar after separate incidents on September 13th and 14th when one man was stabbed and another held up at gunpoint.

The Roach brothers, Joseph and Peter, were involved in a fight with some tramps in the northern part of the square mile and, when the dust settled, Joseph had been

stabbed in the back and his brother into the woods north of the GTR robbed of $18. station. appy October everyone!

This is one of the best times of the year as everything is fresh. The air is changing and has that crisp feel to it; kids are back in school and still excited about the new beginnings; and as tryouts finish up and minor hockey and junior seasons are underway it means the NHL season is shortly upon us.

This October also leads us to a fresh start with this monthly article.

You can expect to find everything from fitness discussion, hockey, sports, mental training, sport psychology, stories simply to challenge or inspire, and end every segment answering a question from you, the audience, that may be burning inside of you. The purpose of this is to be very interactive, informative, inspiring, and challenging.

As many of us continue with our day-to-day routines, I

challenge each and every one of you to take a moment and notice two things every day that you would otherwise pass over. Become present with the moment. Take a second to breathe and really appreciate what it is that is around you.

It could be as simple as the changing colour of the leaves, to how blue the sky is, to how your clothes feel on your body that day. It may be something you notice and then consciously allow it to leave or it may even surprise you and have a major effect on your day. Either way being present is always the first step in self-actualization.

Hi JR, I followed the Colts when you played here. My question, I have a son and daughter, who both play competitive sports (aged 9 and 7). Some parents on their teams don’t seem to care about winning and losing; that everyone should get the “Participation” award and scores don’t count. At what age do you feel we should instill the values that winning and losing in sports and life teach us?

I think it is really based on the individual and, what I mean by that, is the question is really about competitiveness. The desire to win and the inner drive to succeed comes from the individual. Society puts the pressure on the outcome. The outcome, we know it as, is win and lose. Whereas the actual focus and attention should be brought to the process, because at the end of the day that is all we have control over. Did we prepare well enough, did I get enough sleep, did I eat the right way, did I supplement correctly, was my recovery adequate, did I have the inner fire to go the extra mile, did I train enough to allow myself to go the extra mile? That trope of focus and attention should be addressed at a young age, and when that is addressed the inner desire to win will come from that child.
