Char Lan Cruisaders Win SD&G Soccer Championship

ongratulations to the CharLan senior boys’ soccer team on winning the SD&G championship which was played in Alexandria on May 17th. They beat Glengarry District 1-0 on an epic cross from Ethan Mulhearn with Marc Ouimet finishing a header into the net. Ben Dirven got the shutout. They beat L’Héritage 3-1 in their first game with Nick Danaher scoring twice and Toby Schwartz getting one. It was a total team effort. They move onto EOSSAA on Wednesday, May 24th.

ontrary to popular belief, swinging harder and faster is not the key to driving the ball further.

Yes, it may give the ball a little extra yardage, however, swinging harder and faster will most often lead to miss-hits, causing the ball to go a shorter distance. To hit the ball farther, I suggest engaging your hips a little more. On your down swing, let your hips release forward as you are swinging through the ball; this will create more momentum in your swing and will translate to more distance. If you’re having trouble picturing the hip movement, think of your hip motion when swinging a baseball bat or taking a slap shot in hockey, it is extremely similar!

o gain more distance, we must take a look at how energy moves through the body’s kinetic chain. When we swing with only our arms, there is enough kinetic energy (KE) produced to hit the ball far. In order to produce more energy to hit the ball farther, we load the legs on the back swing. This can be done by bending the front knee and contracting the quad muscle. As we start the downswing, let’s try to start it with a slight forward motion, with a hip bump towards the target. We follow this by simultaneously turning the hips towards the target and driving the front leg straight. Finally, allow the back heel to lift and release to bring the PE through the upper body, turning it into KE. Final thought... without the club, take a 3/4 swing, trying to feel how to get the lower body more active in storing and releasing energy from the legs up and through the arms.

n order to hit the ball farther you need to focus on two things: generating more club head speed and hitting the centre (or sweet spot) of the club.

Let’s focus on generating more club head speed. Contrary to popular belief, in most cases, the harder you try to hit the ball the slower your club head speed. This is a result of increased tension in the hands, arms, and shoulder. So first of all.... relax.

Then, focus on your easiest club speed generators - shoulders and hips. A big shoulder turn behind the ball sets you up to hit the ball further, as does effective hip and leg action. But it’s all relative and in most cases should be done with the help of a certified teaching professional.

o hit the ball further you will need to increase your club head speed.

Most people think that swinging their arms faster will accomplish this, but in fact this will not help. The best way to

increase your club head speed is to make sure you have a full turn with your body; as you turn back towards the ball your arms follow. Loosen up your core muscles before you play. To help your rotation place a club behind your back on your belt line, slowly stretch by twisting your back forward and back. This will allow you to rotate, increase club head speed and hit the ball farther.

Grant Hebert — A Top Five Canadian Junior A Forward

S

t. Andrew’s very own Grant Hebert was recently named one of top five Junior A forwards in the country. Not only did he lead the CCHL in scoring, but was also awarded MVP of the league this past season for his contributions with the Cumberland Grads.

His achievements have marked an unforgettable year for the 20-yearold.

In addition to his season success, Hebert also committed to Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania earlier this spring. Hebert will begin his varsity hockey career in the fall of 2018 competing at the NCAA Division 1 level, adding an offensive indispensability to the roster.

Hebert based his decision on attending RMU because of its location, sitting a mere 10 minutes from the core of Pittsburgh. He also liked the intimacy of the classroom setting it offered, “I liked the fact that I could be on a first name basis with the Profs,” he said.

Although still unsure, Hebert plans on studying something businessrelated. Finance, accounting, and sports management are all avenues he’s considering.

In the meantime however, Hebert has his fourth and final year to tackle with the Grads in the CCHL Yzerman division before heading off to his new home in Pennsylvania.

Hebert credits a lot of his development as a player to the Cumberland club. “I’ve learnt to go outside of my comfort zone, playing with new guys, a new coach, and in a new town,” Hebert said, which will help in his transition into his university hockey career.

For his last season with the Grads, his goals include getting bigger and stronger to be able to compete against the big guys come time for varsity puck. “I want to be in the best shape going into next season,” he said.

Being a leader on and off the ice is also equally important for him, which will ultimately leave his mark on the CCHL before moving onto new endeavours in the NCAA.

Looking for a Goalie Coach? Adam Russo is Your Man!

dam Russo has quickly become a household name in many hockey goaltenders’ homes across the SD&G, Prescott-Russell, and Western Quebec areas. This is because of his fast-growing reputation as a knowledgeable, skilled, and dynamic goalie coach.

Russo’s reputation is easily backed up by his own training history and playing experience, his work ethic and professionalism, and his commitment to training his goalies with diverse and effective

Russo is the owner and head instructor of A.R. Action-Reaction Goaltending, a business started in Vancouver, BC about 8 years ago. In 2013, Adam, his young family, and the business relocated to Eastern Ontario, which he now calls home. Since re-establishing, A.R. Goaltending has committed to various hockey organizations in the area, including the Ontario Hockey Academy, the Cornwall Typhoons, the Pirates de Casselman, and the Hawkesbury Hawks – Junior A and U18. Adam is also often seen on the ice working with goaltenders who play for the Seaway Valley Rapids AA association. This past Christmas season, Russo also oversaw the IIHF World Junior Championship development camp hosted in Brossard, Quebec.

Adam’s coaching philosophy is simple. “You can have fun, work hard, and succeed all at the same time, but you have to have that drive and hunger to be the best. That is

what I want and ask of anyone that steps on the ice with me.” Russo explains, “My goal is to bring what I have learned throughout my career, what I know and use in my game today, and what I see first-hand at the level I play, to my goalies so that I can prepare them for their next steps.”

Russo comes to the ice with a long history of personal training and playing experience. At 34 years of age, Adam has spent more than 25 years as a net-minder. Growing up in Montreal, Russo played AA/ AAA minor hockey up to his Midget years, after which he was drafted in the 2nd round, 29th overall, into the QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League). During his four seasons in the “Q”, Russo tied Nick Sanza and Roberto Luongo for the league record for single season shutouts (7). Further, he still holds the career season/playoff record for Russo uses iPad technology to help young goalies Eli Seguin and shutouts (23) for the league.

An Interview with Yvon Plourde

von Plourde has been involved in athletics since he was five years old, playing for the Kinsmen Minor Soccer Association, which is now known as the Seaway Valley Soccer Club. He then played soccer recreationally and joined the competitive Blazer group at the age of sixteen.

“In 1986 I was given the opportunity to attend some friendly soccer matches in Europe (Holland, Belgium, and West Germany). It was at this point that I began to understand the passion of soccer to people from around the world,” says Plourde.

“I continued to play soccer for La Citadelle throughout my high school years. After high school

I continued to play as a member of the Cornwall District Soccer League for 20 years. I have since stepped down from playing at a competitive level and have turned my focus to coaching.”

Plourde’s coaching began with adults when he created his own adult team with his brothers, both playing and coaching. Once he had his own family, he coached children in the Seaway Valley Soccer Club, which began in 2005. Plourde was also coaching an indoor program for the Cornwall Indoor Soccer League.

He has since been coaching at a competitive level for the last seven years. “This was quite different, as coaching an adult is more of a managing aspect of who plays in which position and at what time. I became more focused on

coaching once my wife and I had or own family and noticed how much my boys enjoyed the sport,” says Plourde. “I had a passion for seeing others learn the game that

Cornwall Flag Bearer at Ottawa Senators Playoff Game

A

bbey Bellefeuille, 14, had the incredible experience of being a flag bearer at game six of the Ottawa Senators versus the Pittsburgh Penguins playoff series. On Tuesday May 23, Abbey wore a Senators’ jersey and proudly held their flag as she skated around the Canadian Tire Centre’s rink.

“The best part of the experience was when I was standing on the blue line with the players for the national anthems,” expressed Abbey. “I just felt so happy and proud to be repping my favourite team. Also, during the national anthems, Pageau gave me a stick tap on my shin pad, and smiled at me, which made me really happy.”

Her day started with a run through on the ice with the other flag bearer, they spent some time at the Red Zone, had supper, and after watching the warm-up the flag bearers were given

the cue to skate onto the ice. Abbey described skating in front of 20,000 people with the flag, giving the players fist pumps, being interviewed on the jumbotron and enjoying the game after.

“I felt a little like ‘oh my gosh,’ when I was standing on a blue line beside the starting line-up. I was thinking I can’t believe I’m here, and my legs felt a little shaky,” Abbey explained. “Overall, this experience was something I’ll never forget, and something I’ll cherish for a long time.”

Abbey started playing hockey with the Cornwall Girls when she was six.

She has been with the Typhoons for the past eight years and this season will be playing for the Cornwall Typhoons Bantam A Team.

Two days before the game, Abbey’s dad got her to read an email with the news that she had been selected.

“I was super excited and pumped at first,” described Abbey, “and then I started to cry because I knew how big of an experience this was going to be—and it definitely was.”

“I have to admit that my younger team (U12 boys) was also part of a tournament last season where we were playing a game that has left me with a beautiful memory. There was probably less than 10 minutes left in the game when my team was losing 4-1 and in no time my players scored 3 goals to end up tying the game; that tie was probably the best tie I had ever seen,” Plourde shares.

Finally, it’s clear that Plourde’s coaching passion comes from the passion he has first and foremost for the game of soccer.

“Little did I know when I first started playing soccer at the young age of five that I would be coaching later in my life. As with many young athletes, I dreamed

of playing soccer professionally but this dream took a different road at some point. I realized some great soccer moments of my own in my younger years and now realize that I am so fortunate that I can pass on this great game to younger players,” says Plourde. “Being a coach is something that is so rewarding, as you get to mould young players into fantastic players and great teammates. I have been blessed with this great opportunity to help kids from our surrounding area to further develop the soccer skills that I was so fortunate enough to learn. My ultimate goal now is to continue to develop my coaching knowledge in order to see our Seaway Valley Soccer Club and our Indoor Soccer League continue to develop some fantastic soccer players.”

Boxing Legend Gerry Cooney Attends C.T.C. Boxing Night Fundraiser

F

ormer number one ranked heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney was in town recently supporting the Cornwall Children’s Treatment Centre fundraiser, as guest of honour and after dinner speaker.

Cooney, originally from Long Island NY, and now a native of Fanwood NJ, rose to fame in 1980 by knocking out contenders Jimmy Young and Ron Lyle on national television. In 1981, at Madison Square Gardens, Cooney defeated former world heavyweight champion Ken Norton with a devastating first round knockout in just 54 seconds, setting a MSG record for the quickest main event KO. Now ranked as the number one contender, but unable to get the fights that he would like, Cooney sat idle for more than one year before signing for ten million dollars to fight champion Larry Holmes in what was the richest fight ever at the time. That fight remains one of the biggest pay-per-view productions in history, broadcast in more than one hundred and fifty countries. In what was a close fight Larry Holmes stopped Gerry Cooney

in the thirteenth round.

Cooney only fought five more times after the Holmes fight, losing another title fight to champion Michael Spinks in 1987, and getting stopped by George Foreman in his final fight three years later. Gerry Cooney’s Irish charm and a left hook, ranked as one of the hardest punches ever, made him a fan favourite everywhere. Gerry said “walking to the ring at Caesars Palace with thirty-five thousand cheering fans in attendance – there is no feeling in the world like that one”. As for Gerry’s left hook, it is ranked by The Ring as #53 in its top one hundred hardest punches in boxing history. George Foreman stated on the Johnny Carson show, that Cooney’s left hook was the hardest punch that he had ever been hit with.

Cooney says that the thirteen month layoff between the Norton and Holmes fights was difficult. “I would have liked a few more fights to gain experience before facing Holmes, but all of the fighters that I needed to fight were under contract with Don King and I couldn’t fight any of them Continued on page 12

Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach - The PK trade drew a lot of criticism from Montreal fans and local press and many (including myself) were perplexed, believing Bergevin was out of his mind to trade Montreal’s beloved Subban to Nashville considering he was one Canadiens player whose performance didn’t dip during the teams slump (during Carey Price injury). PK (a defenceman) had 3 goals and 18 points to lead the team in scoring over those 26 games (where was the rest of the team?); something was amiss between PK and team management.

He loved the fans and the city and he drew a lot of attention to himself which didn’t sit well with Therrien and Bergevin. Management and Therrien unfairly put the entire weight of the team solely on PK’s shoulders, blamed him for the team’s poor performance and PK was feeling the pressure.

There was a serious incompatibility issue between Therrien and his top defenceman, with Therrien accusing him of having an attitude problem and lack of discipline.

It appeared apparent in early 2017 when the front office management sent Therrien packing. Looking back on the situation now, would Bergevin make the same deal today; I would hope not but as luck would have it, PK has certainly found a team where he’s having great success.

After Earning a Black Belt – What is Next?

T

o some day earn a black belt should be the goal of every karate student.

Achieving this goal will take approximately four to five years of training, hard work, lots of learning, and maybe even a bruise or two (martial art tattoo) along the way. As an instructor, it is very important to develop your students properly, focusing on the journey up through the progressive belt rank system rather than viewing black belt as the destination. Less than one per cent of students who start karate classes will ever stick around long enough to earn the rank of Shodan or 1st degree black belt. For those who finally do earn that coveted black belt, it is a reminder of the growth that has helped its wearer to evolve as a martial artist and also as a stepping stone for continuous development. Earning the Shodan rank should be the goal, just not the ultimate one.

Black belt opens the door to a whole new world of growth and development.

As a coloured belt the path was very clearly laid out for you – you knew which katas needed to be perfected for your next belt test, and also what was required as far as bunkai, self-defence, and pressure point knowledge.

Black is now kind of “the new white”, the pace is more relaxed as there is a three year time frame before testing for Nidan, 2nd degree black belt.

There will still be two new katas to learn but after that most other things change.

Let’s look at it as short term and midterm development (short being yr.

1, mid yr. 2) with long term being a bit unrealistic at this point, as the interests and emphasis may change with time. In the short term more responsibility will come by being given a various teaching responsibilities.

This could be one-on-one or a few students of a particular belt rank. The material could be Kata, self-defence, pressure points, working on areas of concern, or helping to prepare students for an upcoming belt test. In the midterm increased responsibility is delegated and input on class progress development is required. One of the most important parts of black belt development and one that is required to progress further in rank is seminars.

Our recommendation at Seaway Karate is to average ten seminars minimum per year. This is not nearly as difficult as it sounds as each November the World Kobudo Federation holds Capital Conquest, a 2 day seminar event with a wide range of master instructors from around the world. Most martial artists usually pick up eight seminars at this event every year in addition to ones by guest instructors at our own club. For every martial artist who earns the rank of Shodan, it is a milestone achievement; a Dan ranking that could be the initial one in a lifelong journey.

his month’s rainy downpours put a damper on practices, but Coach John Flannigan said the Cornwall River Rats are looking forward to a promising season.

“Every year we’ve been very, very competitive,” he said. “We always have a shot.”

The baseball team has not won the league yet, but have often been one to watch, even playing their way to the championships in a previous season.

A group of new players are infusing some new blood into the roster of otherwise familiar faces.

Ben Miller, who won the rookie of the year award a few seasons ago, plays ball across the border for SUNY Canton in the school year and has brought along a shortstop to join the team. Likewise, Flannigan’s son Austin will be joined by some students he plays with at University of Ottawa.

Beth Depratto enjoyed a terrific sporting career having represented the Ottawa Raiders and Montreal Axion of the National Women’s Hockey League. She also skated with Ottawa University, St. Lawrence College, an independent school varsity hockey league, and played Hearts soccer

“One of many favourite sports memories was having my parents and grandfather attending my games and cheering me on. They went so far as to drive to Boston on several occasions just to watch one game and drive home. As much as I loved playing the game, I loved how proud it made them. An amazing accomplishment was coming runner-up to Summer West in points in the NWHL. My parents kept tabs and kept me posted as the season went on right up to the last weekend. I missed out by one point and was named the league all star forward for the 2005-06 season.”

Local Athletes Honoured at 53rd Annual Benson Cornwall Lions Club Sportsman Dinner for an evening of recognition. Before the presentations got underway, MC Dave Murphy introduced guest speaker Jim Gilchrist, who has been the play- by-play voice of the Kingston Frontenacs and Oshawa Generals for the better part of four decades. Gilchrist, who is looked upon by media and scouts as the goto guy shared some interesting stories with the capacity crowd.

he 53rd annual Benson Cornwall Lions Club Sportsman Dinner was held recently at the Best Western Parkway, honouring sixty-five individuals from various sports. This dinner provides an opportunity for athletes of all sports to get together

This evening also marked the first time in the history of the sportsman’s dinner that every high school was represented by a winning athlete. The Jacques Richard Trophy presented annually to Cornwall and area’s top sports personality was won by Jakob Loucks. Jakob began his football career in 2006 playing flag football with the Cornwall Wildcats. Jacob starred in several leagues with the Wildcats, from the Seaway Valley Spring League, NCAFA and Winter 6 on 6, and then at St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School. Jakob went on to Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, where as a freshman

he was named starting quarterback, starting and finishing every game of the season. Jakob was named AUS Rookie of the Year as well as the CIS/U Sports Peter Gorman Trophy as Canadian Rookie of the Year. Jakob passed for 1325 yards and five touchdowns with only seven interceptions in 225 attempts. Jakob also ran the ball 56 times for 404 yards, placing him second in Canada just 39 yards behind the leader.

Question - How can I become a better defenceman???

Answer (from South Stormont Selects Novice B Rep Head Coach Bradley Robertson) Defence is a very tough position to play. Nowadays a good defenceman has to be able to contribute both offensively and defensively in order to play the position well.

First and foremost work on your skating. A defenceman has to be adept at skating both forwards and backwards equally well. Footwork is very crucial as a defenceman needs to be well balanced and able to stop and start, pivot both ways, and track players in both large and tight spaces being as agile as possible. Head on a swivel, maintaining good gap control, having an active stick, and angling are necessary tactics that need to be learned in order to effectively separate the offensive player with the puck in both the neutral and defensive zone. A good defenseman has to practise his ability to get off quality shots in the offensive zone, be strong on the boards when checking in his own zone or keeping pucks in at the offensive blue line. Defencemen need to work constantly on puck-handling and passing the puck, one of the most important jobs that is demanded of a good defencemen is a solid first pass out of the zone whenever possible. Strong outlet and stretch passes as well as good D-to-D passes all need to be worked on whenever possible in order to improve these important skills.

Murphy vs Allaire, They Survived Fight Night!

ave Murphy and Dan Allaire have been friends since 1990 when they both attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School. For several years at CJSS/ CFLG they were co-workers including a few seasons together as voice of the Cornwall Colts Jr. A hockey club. When Dan got married, Dave was a member of the wedding party. When Dave Murphy ran for city council, Dan Allaire was a key member of the campaign team. Dave and Dan have always been community minded individuals with an interest in raising money for a good

cause. On Saturday evening May 6th at Nav Canada they did what few people would ever consider doing — they climbed into the boxing ring to fight each other in an officially sanctioned match to benefit the Cornwall and area Children’s Treatment Centre.

In the ring after the fight Dan and Dave received praise from guest speaker, former Heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney, who said that they fought a good entertaining fight, and jokingly challenged the winner to a fight next year.

Trainer Jorge Luis took a turn on the mic with words of praise.

Jorge saying “I couldn’t measure Dan and Dave the same way that I measure my son. I had to put a little water in my wine because I couldn’t push them like I do Tony.

This looks easy but it’s not – I have respect for any man who gets in

him with his fight gloves which had been autographed by Gerry Cooney. When Dave mentioned that he had won the fight, Dan (a member of Dave’s campaign team) replied that “If Dave decides to run for mayor it is very important that he have an undefeated record”.

For both Dave Murphy and Dan Allaire the fight was their debut and retirement match, and the page has now turned, but both Dave and Dan will continue to have fun with this fight, one that will be long remembered by the capacity crowd at Nav Canada.

Chad Piteau Talks Fishing

orty-seven-year-old local Chad Piteau is married and the father of 14-year-old twin boys, Noah and Samuel. He works as a sales director for Trevi out of Quebec and will be soon taking a job as Territory Sales Representative for Leisure Manufacturing for the entire province of Ontario as of June. In his spare time, Piteau also has a passion for fishing.

Over the past twenty-five years, Piteau has been on many great adventures with his family, living in three different provinces and five different cities, in search of the perfect life balance. His “risk for reward” in business as he calls it, has led him to many experiences so he can settle down with his family and relax.

“I found myself searching for something that was outdoors, fun, and that can involve my family and friends, so I came back to something I grew up in Cornwall loving and that had been missing from my life for many years and bought a fishing boat from Rogers Marina, so I can explore the St. Lawrence river and show my children what I remember from being their age and experience a real connect to nature,” says Piteau.

“Learning the river all over again and exploiting the fishing world with the kids has been something for me that will create lasting memories.”

While fishing can be relaxing, Piteau says he loves the thrill of it.

“The thing I love about fishing the most is when the fish is on, the thrill of hooking a fish. Pike, pickerel,

perch, bass they all have their season and they are all fun to catch and find.

They can fill the freezer too,” says Piteau.

Piteau’s earliest fishing memory goes back to his primary school days, “Loading the packsacks up with our rods and reels on our bicycles heading down to the river. My grandparents lived on Bryden Street up from Doyle’s Marina. I could still remember having a rod that was telescopic and packed away quite nice.”

His favourite memory, though, is a more recent one. In March, Piteau brought his kids ice fishing for perch.

“Walking out on the frozen bay, teaching them how to auger holes and spending the day catching fish was an unbelievable feeling. They were so proud and happy to have accomplished something together; the plan to catch fish and working for it and having caught is the ultimate reward and ice fishing is incredible for that. Going out with the proper wind and weather and the day is spent together in the great outdoors,” says Piteau.

Piteau says he loves fishing the St. Lawrence River from Lancaster to Power Dam and even on the Quebec side.

“We all have our spots and hope to go out with some experience to find even better spots to fish. I am very fortunate to have family and friends that have experience to share with me to improve on all this. Local Softball Players Earn Fast-pitch Bronze Medal at New Zealand World Masters Tournament

L

ocal fast-pitch softball players, Jim Martell, Bryan Lamarche, and Steve McGillis recently returned from Auckland, New Zealand where they earned a bronze medal in the Men’s 45+ Competitive Division.

Jim Martell organized this team with players from western Ontario as well as British Columbia. Seven teams were in their division, including two other Canadian teams from BC and Alberta, one team from Australia and three teams from New Zealand. All games were very close and they ended up in first place after round-robin play.

Unfortunately, they lost 2 -1 against a very strong New Zealand team, the Whakatu Rebels, in the semi-finals. That meant a bronze medal game against the Ladner Masters from BC. They won this game 2 – 0 which earned them a bronze medal.

This is the third time that Martell has put together a team and entered

the World Masters Games. In 2009, in Sydney, Australia, his team lost in the gold medal game against New Zealand and they earned a silver medal. With the exception of two players, all team members were from the Cornwall area and played in the Cornwall Men’s Fastball League at King George Park. In 2013, in Torino, Italy, his team won gold.

Bryan Lamarche and Steve McGillis were players in all three of these competitions with Frank Marceau and Brian O’Neill playing in 2009 and 2013.

The World Masters Games take place every four years and started in Toronto, Ontario back in 1985. There are 28 sports that are available for participation; a person need only be 35 years or older. In Auckland, New Zealand this year, there were over 27,000 athletes that participated, with over 100 countries represented. The oldest athlete was 101! You do not need to qualify to participate and the opening and closing ceremonies are amazing. It’s a great way to travel!

This was the sixth time Jim Martell had participated in the World Masters Games and he now has two bronze medals, a silver, and a gold. The next World Masters Games take place in 2021 in Kansai, Japan and Martell is hoping once again to enter a team. He

Derouchie, 5’8, 190 lbs is a twoway winger who spent parts of five seasons in the CCHL. His time was split between the Gloucester Rangers and the Cornwall Colts scoring 56 goals, 71 assists for 127 points during the regular season.

He scored 4 goals and 8 assists in playoff action.

The Cornwall born Derouchie will join Salem State University Vikings who play in the NCAA Division III MASCAC Conference. The program heads into its 37th season of action this fall and plays out of the 2,200 seat Richard H Rockett Arena.

ave you heard about the Long Sault Regatta river hydroplane race happening this June? If you haven’t, put it on your calendar. It’s not an event you’ll want to miss.

Anne-Marie Leboeuf, the Hydroplane Racing League coordinator, told us a bit more about the league and what hydroplane racing is.

“The Hydroplane Racing League (HRL) runs a 10-race circuit in Ontario, the United States, and Quebec. We have 70 teams registered in HRL in four different classes; the 2.5 litre class, the Formula-2500, the Hydro-350 and the most prestigious the Grand Prix,” says Leboeuf. “What

we call a hydroplane is actually a boat that, when it runs at high speed over the water, it hovers. The drivers who drive these boats have the ability to measure the air infiltrating under the tunnels to accelerate up to 225 km/h on a one-mile course.”

She also explained how the hydroplane races actually work.

“After 5 minute warm-up laps, the hydroplanes must complete 4 or 5 laps depending on the class. Leboeuf says the sport is quite unique and spectacular. “Each of the race sites allows the fans to visit the pit area, meet with teams, drivers, and see the hydroplane up close. The Long Sault race site is a beautiful park with a good view as it is a natural amphitheatre. The different classes: 2.5L are the rookies, the Formula-2500 are the inspiring drivers towards a Hydro-350 or Grand Prix. The competition in the Hydro-350 is awesome, there is a similarity to NASCAR, they are good drivers who are not afraid to be tight, anyone of them could win a race,” says Leboeuf.

“Several drivers are from these areas, including one of the most competitive, Bert Henderson in the Grand Prix Class. He is involved in the organization of the Brockville HRL Race Event. All the details for each of the race sites can be found on hrlhydroplane.com,” says Leboeuf.

“The calendar presently includes 10 weekends of competition, spreading form May to September and attracts thousands of spectators to each event.

T

he Saint Joseph’s Lady Panthers Varsity Rugby Club is on a roll. Its 2017 SDG record stands at 4-0. An offensive powerhouse, the ladies have dominated the pitch; in four games they have scored 189 points and conceded a mere 24.

The Panthers are a young team, with 3 out of 4 players being in grade 9 or 10. Building on a second place finish in 2015 and an SDG championship in 2016, the Panthers will be competing at EOSSAA this year against the likes of perennial finalists Kingston, Smiths Falls, and Pembroke.

The Panthers, seeded fourth, will kick-off against a heavily favoured first seeded La Salle team out of Kingston.

Whatever the outcome at EOSSAA, the Panthers have a bright future. One of the keys to

success for the ladies is the team’s philosophy; having fun and being safe outweigh winning.

“If the kids aren’t having fun, what’s the point?” asks Panthers’ Head Coach Casey Leger, noting that rugby is one of the only internationally played sports that allows full contact for women.

Another key to the Panthers’ success has been the introduction of U18 club rugby in Cornwall. The Cornwall Claymores finished third out of seven teams in their inaugural season in the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union’s U18 girls’ league last summer. That team drew players from both Holy Trinity and Tagwi, but by far most of the players came from St Joe’s.

The Claymores are still welcoming players. Interested ladies should check out the Cornwall Claymores U18 Facebook page.

Athlete of the Month Nicholas Leroux

Home town: Monkland Age: 14 School/Grade: Pavillon de Casselman, Grade 8 Nicholas Leroux is a multi-sport athlete who currently competes in the Glengarry Soccer League with the U14 Maxville Celtics and spring 4-on-4 hockey with the Own the Ice program in Finch. Last season with NGS he played his first season of body contact with the Bantam Rep team.

Two seasons ago in 2015-16 his peewee team finished second and reached the conference final. His soccer team went undefeated through regular season and playoff action. He calls that his all-time highlight.

Asked what his favourite sport is, he responds. “Hockey is for sure my favourite because it’s a challenging sport which in you can only succeed with smarts and teamwork.

It’s a fun sport to play with friends and is fast-paced. I like to play with my NGS friends, on my Dinamos school team in Casselman and pick up in Maxville and on our ODR. I hope I can still be playing sports in my 40’s like my Dad and in a few years play alongside him on his AJK team.”

Along with being a participant in sports, Leroux also referees.

“It makes me realize that referees can miss calls and can’t see everything,” says Leroux. “I used to get mad at refs when I thought something should have been called, but now that I am one it makes me realise that anyone can miss a call, you can’t see everything on a huge soccer field.”

SHINES THE SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS

ornwall resident Alyssa Blais, originally from Quebec, has a strong passion for athletics; being a water lover, Blais scuba dives and swims whenever and wherever she can. She works at Bourgon Construction as an operations manager, which is a change from her not-for-profit charity career, as she used to be the executive director at the Agape Centre.

In her spare time, Blais creates mixed media art pieces and hikes in the Adirondacks. She is also part of the Cornwall multisport scene and lives a very active lifestyle.

She got involved with multisport about ten years ago. “I started running the 5K at the MS Run. I truly was not a runner. I started because a friend wanted to do the 5K with me.

When I turned forty, six years ago, I had an urge to try a Triathlon. Out of the blue. It took me four years before I even started the training. I didn’t even own a bike and had never heard of clip-on shoes,” says Blais.

She then started with swim and “joined the Masters’ program (Masters Sea Lions Program) and progressed from there. “The swim coach Bill Lister is probably the best coach I have ever had. With that, I then proceeded to keep running and bought winter run gear so I could run outside in the winter,” says Blais.

It wasn’t long after that Blais started biking, after being fortunate enough to know a cyclist who sold her a bike. “I joined the multi sport club and found out through them about Dan Contant’s spin class at Bicycle World,” says Blais. “I trained there.

When spring came along, I joined Cornwall’s cycle club and rode with them during the spring and summer.”

In Blais’ first summer (2016) she

did five sprint triathlons, saying it was both fun and difficult. “The best part of doing Triathlons is meeting people, getting fit, going to new places to race, and feeling a little bit like a super star once you finish one,” says Blais. “For me, it’s not about being the fastest, although I do like to improve on my times, it’s this whole celebration after you have done a triathlon. Because I found them challenging and worthwhile to do, I like to, after it’s finished, to really celebrate the fact that I did one! It makes them so much more special to me.”

What Blais says she likes most about multisport is the simplicity.

“Running you can take anywhere.

Swimming, all you need is a bathing suit, and with biking, it’s the beauty of riding outside. Anyone can do it,” says Blais. “I never rode a road bike before or in a group bike ride and I did! Open water swimming, not easy but achievable and running, I started the ‘1 min walk, 1 min run’ and although I do not do long distances, I worked up to doing 10 Ks. It’s not my nature to run, it’s not really even my favourite of the three, and I can do it!”

Currently, Blais says she’s enjoying sprints and is hoping to do an Olympic Triathlon at the end of this season.

“I am very new to the sport and so I have a lot of improvements to still do.

There are endless races out there and I have only touched upon a few. I am happy with what I have done to date,” says Blais. I didn’t think I would be able to master the bike with clip on shoes, or endure one of the swim sessions with Bill. Even do a 10K, which was a first for me last year. It was hard, but I did it and I encourage people to try it. It’s an experience that is truly unforgettable once you cross that finish line!”

ierre Guindon has a lot to say when you ask him about football. The Cornwall resident has many memories to share about his football adventures, as his playing took him through high school, college, university, and onto the CFL (Winnipeg and Montreal).

His football career also saw him inducted into the Glengarry (Ontario), Cornwall, and University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Sports Halls of Fame.

“I started playing football when I attended Cornwall Classical College. It was a private school for boys run by a religious order that taught students from Grade 9 all the way up to their B.A. degree years,” explains Guindon. “The team was made up of players who had never played the sport in an organized way. We were really just a rag-tag bunch!”

The college team belonged to the Quebec Intercollegiate League. It was the team’s first year in this league that Pierre remembers fondly. “1964.

We won the title that year. We were considered the underdogs and we ended up winning the championship. It was a huge game, televised across Quebec.”

Guindon met with much success playing football.

He quickly became known for his offensive guard abilities and his defensive tackle know-how. “I really enjoyed playing the offensive line,” states Pierre.

“There was contact in every play and it required thinking and quick adjustment. It was most exciting to play offense because from play to play, things always changed. It was all about strategy.”

Not only was Pierre a talented offensive and defensive player, he was also an accomplished placekicker. “Developing my placekicking skills helped to open doors in my football career. It’s what got me to the CFL. In fact, a moment of personal success dates back to 1968 when I was playing for Winnipeg and I kicked a 54 yard field goal. It was the longest field goal kicked that year. I’m proud of that achievement.”

Pierre Guindon was Winnipeg Bombers’ first round draft pick in the 1968 CFL College draft. He was traded to the Montreal Alouettes in 1971. Following his CFL career, Guindon completed law

A

lot of boxers talk about facing adversity. Few can match the tribulations Tony “The Lightning” Luis has seen in his 28 years. Standing fivefeet, seven inches, Tony has breezed

through opponents with 23 wins against only three losses in his professional career.

But it’s the battle outside the ring that has positioned the Cornwall, Ontario boxer into the championship fighter Liveco Boxing signed in late 2016.

As a teenager, Tony narrowly missed making the Canadian Olympic team headed for Beijing in 2007. Missing out on the Olympics put him in a funk that could have derailed his career.

After the 2007 loss, because of a scoring malfunction, he wanted to back away from the sport. But his mother had slipped him a letter telling him not to waste his talent. Tony refocused and decided to turn pro. In May of 2008 he fought his first professional bout against David Aguirre of Mexico. Tony won with a unanimous decision. Five months later and following another win, Tony would lose his mother

unexpectedly to a brain aneurism.

Tony was scheduled to fight Mario Andrade in 11 days. Even though he was grieving, he was pulled to the ring.

He knew that his mother would want him to fight. Days after burying her, Tony beat Andrade unanimously.

Tony would keep on winning.

In 2015, Tony beat undefeated lightweight Karl Dargan with 7-1 odds stacked against him. But, his next fight, a controversial loss to Derry Matthews three months later hardened Luis and propelled him to three straight wins.

Along the way he also earned his college diploma in police foundations.

But he did not want to become a cop and credits his mother with finding his career path outside of boxing. “There’s power in compassion and there’s power in forgiveness. Those are probably the greatest lessons she taught me growing up,” Tony says.

He became a substance abuse counsellor at a boys’ group home, going toe-to-toe with kids he sees reflected in his own darker days.

Managed by his father, Jorge, Tony earned a convincing win in his first hometown bout over Noe Nuñez in April 2016. Tony displayed the speed and savvy he’s known for when he retired the Mexican boxer in 6 rounds of a scheduled 10.

The family always enjoys “away” tournaments as the kids love packing their bags and spending time away for a weekend of fun. It doesn’t matter who is playing, it always turns into a fun family trip.

Growing up with two brothers, Rolland says sports were always an important part of her life.

“We spent our winters at the arena, and our summers at the soccer fields and baseball diamonds, just as I do now.

I played a variety of sports growing up and now I get to enjoy sports at my house, practising with the kids or on the sidelines as I cheer them on.”

Owner and office manager of McDonald’s Electric in Maxville, Stacey helped manage the NGS Novice B Rep team this season and was one of the lead organizers of the association’s Novice Mega Tournament.

Asked why she has become so involved in having her kids participate in sports, Rolland says there are plenty of positive values to be achieved.

“At the end of the day, I want my kids to learn to work hard while doing something they love, building lifelong friendships along the way. Giving each of our children an equal opportunity to do what they enjoy is very important to us. We want each of them to experience all of the benefits of being a part of a team. I want them all to be able to cheer on their friends during a game, or to build memories with their teammates at the restaurant after the game.

With four kids, my husband and I are definitely outnumbered and we know the day will come when we will have to start asking for help getting the kids where they need to go. Luckily, when your child is part of a team, the other parents become like family. We are there for one another, willing to help our however we can.”

McCuaig’s all-time highlight is winning the provincial championship with his tyke lacrosse team, but winning the novice championships with the Rebels this season (including five tournaments) was also special.

Cornwall Resident Former Team Russia Hockey Player

italiy Zhydkykh knew he wanted to be a goalie since the age of five while watching hockey.

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, he played as a defenceman to learn the game and then started his career as a goalie.

“We traveled all over Europe for tournaments between season games. Our season was played across Russia and Ukraine as it was the same country, USSR,” explained Zhydkykh.

When the USSR broke up in 1991 and the countries separated, Zhydkykh was asked to play in Moscow for Jr. Dynamo Moscow.

“It was hard for my parents because I was only twelve and would leave home to live in Moscow in Dynamo pro team base camp, but it was a really good opportunity for me and my parents sent me to Moscow” said Zhydkykh.

He played with Dynamo 2 during the 1995-1996 season and was then invited to try out for Team Russia.

“To my surprise I made a team for the U18 world juniors. I played for Team Russia for the next two years,

in the same tournament as the Sedin Brothers and many more current NHL players,” said Zhydkykh.

After playing for Team Russia, he was approached to play in Calgary.

He moved to Canada, played for the Calgary Hitman, and trained with the Calgary Flames.

A series of events, including an agent only interested in personal gain, a case of the chicken pox, and language barriers led to the conclusion of Zhydkykh’s professional hockey career.

He began working in the oil patch and coal mining in Alberta. Later he was offered a job

“My advice to kids is have fun and give your 100 per cent every practice, and next practice try to beat your 100 per cent by 10 per cent” Zhydkykh shared. “My dream is to open a hockey school where kids can play and go to school for free, because cost of ice hockey in Canada is so high. Professional boxing returns to the civic complex June 17. Headlining the card is Tony “Lightning” Luis vs Cam O’Connell. Ronnie Robidoux will also be on the card but at the time of this writing his opponent was undetermined.

Outstanding job done by the Ottawa Senators organization this season. One goal away from a berth in the Stanley Cup finals.

I wonder what David Murphy and Dan Allaire will challenge each other to next.

MURPHY’S SPORTS LAW I’ve had a lot of nicknames over the years. When I was in grade school, my uncle would call me “Flappers” (my ears grew first before the rest of my head caught up). By the time I was in high school my cranium was still waiting for the rest of my body to catch up so a term of endearment for me became “Moonhead” (think So I Married an Ax Murderer). “Smurph” and “Murph” along with “Diamond Dave” were plays on my first and last names that came along when I started my career in radio. There are plenty of worse things that

I could’ve been labelled with.

After a three round charity boxing match against Dan Allaire (which raised record amounts for the Children’s Treatment Centre and Champs Boxing Club), I’ve been called “Champ” by a lot of people. That’s based on a unanimous decision that allowed referee Tony Luis to raise my arm. Of all the nicknames I’ve had, this is the one that makes me uncomfortable. While I appreciate the sentiment, the real “Champ” is each and every amateur and pro boxer that has the internal fortitude to walk down that aisle, climb those steps, and walk into the ring to face an opponent with the same goal of victory that they have. If you think it’s OK to call me “Champ”, Dan deserves that moniker as well.

I have a lot of respect for any athlete in any sport that competes at a high level. But that respect gets ramped up when it’s a sport that is onevs-one – so called combat sport. There’s something very different about

getting set to go one-on-one with someone (amateur or pro). There are no teammates to help you if you make a mistake. There’s no taking a breather during the action. The focus of the crowd is on the two of you, nobody else.

Dan and I had identical goals in this charity boxing match. We wanted to raise as much money as possible for the Children’s Treatment Centre and Champs Boxing Club. We wanted to “do right” by the sport of boxing – showing the respect to the sweet science and so we trained for over a year to ensure we accomplished that. We also wanted to put on a good show for the crowd – they deserved that much for the price of their tickets. The moment we both realized we had accomplished our goals was when we finished the bout and received a standing ovation from the more than 300 people at NAV Centre.

Dan and I both received our Boxing Ontario books from the judges and quickly announced our retirement from the sport.

Thank you to the gang at Champs Boxing Club including Jorge Luis, Elaine Luis, Matt Veenstra, Tony Luis, Bassam Ghadie, and all the amateur competitors for pushing us during training. Thank you Sean Adams, Luc Marion, Dave Michaud, Angelo Towndale, Lynn Chauvin, Mary Lalonde, Anne Drouin, and Wendy Grant – the committee members who helped to organize a first rate event. And one special thank you to Dan Allaire for making this roller coaster ride a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my days.
