Indian Motorcycle announced its new limited-edition Challenger Elite model for 2022 (MSRP $34,999). With a production run of only 200 units, globally, the Challenger Elite offers a demanding presence to match its powerhouse performance.

THE NEW 2022 LIMITED EDITION INDIAN MOTORCYCLE CHALLENGER ELITE IS SCHEDULED TO ROLL OUT IN EARLY SUMMER.

Most notable is the Challenger Elite's colorway and details… Stealth Grey and Metallic Black with Red accents. Red stitching on the seat as well as coordinating Elite badging give American muscle car inspired vibes. It's a badass machine.

To match the visual impact of the limited-edition Challenger Elite, the Indian 108 cubic inch Powerplus V-twin engine produces an output of 122 horses with 128 foot pounds of torque. Riders will enjoy three riding modes that include rain, standard and sport. Each mode has its own specific throttle mapping and traction control settings.

The suspension setup employs an electronically adjustable rear Fox preload that accommodates for a passenger and/or cargo. Other notes include smart lean technology, backlit handlebar switches adaptive headlights and LED running lights, heated grips as well as an adjustable windscreen.

give claimed power on the $9999 650 LT but claimed torque is quoted at 44 lb-ft at 7000 rpm. That tells you pretty much all you need to know. There’s enough performance down low to handle in-town duties easily, but also enough pep in its step so that when the time comes to screw it on, you’ll not be left wanting. Too much…

There are no variable riding modes, no IMU, no cornering ABS, and no quick shifter fitted to the Versys — this is a two-wheeled scoop of creamy vanilla which, given the correct circumstances, is usually what most people ask for at Cold Rock.

There is, however, a new switchable traction control system that’s been taken straight from the 1000, and excellent LED lighting wrapped in an all-new bodywork so you’re not left totally behind in the tech race.

adjustment coming by a handy knob near the passenger seat.

The ride is plush, damped not for speedy sends but cruisy cruises, which is probably what you’re after with the Versys anyway, otherwise, you’d have bought the same engine slung in a Ninja 650 chassis.

New for 2022 is the 4.3-inch dash that’s identical to the bigger brother Versys 1000 and allows you to run the Kawasaki Rideology app for turn-by-turn navigation, make calls and arrange your music. It doesn’t, however, allow you to run Apple Car Play, which is still the gold standard of rider/dash interaction.

What separates the LT from the $8899 Versys base model are the twin 27-liter hard saddle bags and hand guards. The bags are quality units and pass the full helmet test easily, and, to be honest, the bike looks kinda strange without the bags fitted so don’t waste your time and just go for the LT. Touring without luggage sucks, anyway.

JULY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 35

The Kawasaki Versys 650 LT will last a rider for decades because it's built tough and with no electronics, aside from the new traction control system and ABS to get in the mechanical way. At just under ten grand (before you start throwing in every other fee that comes with a new bike these days), the LT represents great value and will serve you well for years to come, especially if you like your scoops a tasty vanilla flavor.

JULY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 41

MV Agusta’s Brutale 1000 RS is a mechanical exercise in restraint. It produces the kind of performance only applicable to a racetrack and is thoroughly outclassed as an everyday street bike by junior machines in its family tree, like the Dragster Ergonomically800.

more practical than the stripped racer Brutale 1000 RR with its awkward clip-on handlebars, the RS comes with a class-standard single-piece handlebar so the rider at least retains some degree of comfort over a long ride.

TO RIDE THE $26,600 MSRP 2022 MV Agusta Brutale 1000 RS as fast as humanly possible feels a God-given right. Its noisy, clattery internals require great dollops of oxygen that can only come from a heavy-handed throttle application because the best performance is located north of 8000 rpm.

At that engine speed in any of the six gears, your velocity will far outstrip your ability to talk your way out of the fine the policeman is currently writing you. This is, more than any of the current 1000cc-plus super naked bikes, an engine designed for the racetrack. A claimed 208 hp and 85 foot-pounds of torque say so.

That 8000 rpm mark is the crossover from a lackluster bottom-end that houses two pronounced flat spots. The first at 5000 rpm is crucial, because, most of the time, this is where you’ll be when taking off from the traffic lights. The second, at 7000 rpm, isn’t as bad, but it’s enough that when you cross into the 8000 rpm range, it’s like stepping from one time zone to the next.

A stiff seat padding is a welcome addition, however, the riding position is partially spoiled by those admittedly pretty exhausts that mean a rider will foul their heels when tucked in and attack riding.

42 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2022 THE FIRST RIDE: MV AGUSTA BRUTALE 1000 RS

JULY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 43 Like an obscure, highly valuable watch, the Brutale will attract a fordiscerningbuyerlookingsomethingdifferentfromthehordesontheirDucatisandAprilias...

This is not a beginner’s naked bike and even then, the MV Agusta Brutale 1000 RS will only appeal to a very certain type of rider. Like an obscure, highly valuable watch, the Brutale will attract a discerning buyer looking for something different from the hordes on their Ducatis and Aprilias.

The stiff but compliant suspension consists of massive, 50 mm Marzocchi forks and a Sachs monoshock, both of which are fully adjustable. Braking is the domain of Continental MK 100 Cornering ABS mated to Brembo Stylema four-piston calipers and a Brembo radial master cylinder, so you’ll speed retardation is never questioned.

THE FIRST RIDE: MV AGUSTA BRUTALE 1000 RS

44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JULY 2022

The look is further diminished by having passenger footpegs that do not retract, as they do on the Dragster, leaving an ugly fixed aluminum rod covering the twin outlet of each muffler.

You’re accosted with every riding mode imaginable on the RS. In the same vein as the RR, you get a six-axis IMU, traction, wheelie control, cruise control, all of which are adjustable, but you don’t get electronic suspension aside from the Ohlins speed-adjustable steering damper.

Rolling on Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires, the Brutale RS retains a supreme level of agility. Mountain road switchbacks are dealt with in the same fashion as long increasing radius curves, where the MV roars its beautiful song and the revs swing north into 10,000 rpm.

Flat spot or not, the Brutale is one hell of an experience. Having over a claimed 200 hp in your right wrist ensures it so, it just matters whether you want to put up with those famous “MV Agusta-isms” to get there.

“Put on your red shoes and dance the blues,” Bowie famously sang. Or was it, “Jump on your MV and yell with glee?”

Nowadays, and at the age of 35, he is in his best shape, and we know there's still a lot of dancing left to be done. We have been working hard to define, with KMC, which kind of project we could create for Jonny to allow him to keep pushing at 110%. I think we gave him the motivation he needed to go for it for two more years. We can never rest on our laurels of our successful past, so we will have a hard job to cover his expectations. The Woodcraft engine covers are CNC machined from 6061 Aluminum billet for both beauty and strength and are equipped with internally bolted replaceable skid plates. These two-piece engine covers provide stainless steel (or aluminum) skid plates that increase wear resistance in the most susceptible location in the event of a crash in addition to keeping your bike's oil tight. It often allows for multiple crashes and gives your bike a custom look that will make you stand out in the crowd.

The REV'IT! Iridium H2O is a waterproof textile jacket that provides a tech-focused relaxed fit and urban vibe with protection. REV'IT! refers to the Iridium H2O as “Urban Techwear.” Inspired by both outdoor gear and fashion, the jacket is a modern interpretation of a traditional padded motorcycle jacket. Inside is a detachable thermal liner that can easily be removed when it’s not needed. Partial perforation on this mesh motorcycle jacket will direct airflow straight to the body.

The Halley Helmet Bag is the latest addition to Halley Accessories' line of motorbike lifestyle accessories. Combining practicality with elegance, it meets a multitude of needs of today's riders. The i100 helmet is changing the way people wear modular helmets every day. This particular helmet has a full rotation chin bar that can be open or closed, thanks to the P/J Dual Homologation. If you need an extra visor for sunny days, no problem! There's an integrated sun visor (Dark Smoke) on the bottom left side of the shell that's easy to use with just a flip of a switch. This helmet is made from HJC's patented Advanced Polycarbonate material. It comes in 3 sizes, XS to 2XL for a snug fit. Its innovative design ensures maximum comfort and balance for all-day wear. The helmet is also Bluetooth enabled so you can stay connected even while on the go!

The Z-RACING line is based on balancing an aggressive stance with the comfort and functionality of the rider in mind. The screens are intended to be more aerodynamically efficient than the stock versions and have been extensively tested in the virtual wind tunnel. The result is an increase in both the aerodynamic efficiency (Cx) and aerodynamic protection for the rider by deflecting the wind that would otherwise strike the helmet and chest area. The side channels of the Z-Racing screen gather airflow and send it sideways, diverting it from the rider's upper body. The average aerodynamic protection is 12.7% better than the stock Hayabusa screen, while in the "racing" position it is an impressive 61% improvement. Composed of high-quality 3mm acrylic with a rounded 2mm edge, the Z Racing screens are available in a selection of colors and ship ready to install.
