INDUSTRY NEWS SLINGSHOT SIGNATURE LE 2022 - FIRST LOOK

POLARIS CONTINUES TO REFINE ITS SLINGSHOT LINE WITH THE 2022 SLINGSHOT SIGNATURE LE. Since it was first introduced, the Polaris Slingshot has turned heads and sparked conversation. The brand will continue to do so into 2022 with the release of its latest rendition of its three-wheeled vehicle, the Slingshot Signature LE. “We designed our latest limited-edition model to celebrate Slingshot’s iconic signature style. When you’re behind the wheel of a Slingshot, there’s no escaping the attention – its bold, one-of-a-kind looks turn casual arrivals into grand entrances. And that’s what the Signature LE is all about – elevating your style and making your mark each time you jump in the cockpit.” - Chris Sergeant, Polaris Slingshot Vice President. Under the vented sport hood, the Slingshot Signature LE is powered by a 1997 cc ProStar 2.0L engine that produces 178 hp (at 8500 rpm which is also its maximum rev). Maximum torque output is listed at 120 ft-lbs at 5500 rpm. The Slingshot Signature LE sports a glossy and metallic black and red paint job with exclusive bronze accents, complemented by blacked-out badging and accent graphics. 14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2022

In addition to the colorways, that new vented sport hood and the full LED front light bar, push the style meter on the Slingshot Signature LE. The vented hood, made of durable fiberglass composite material, provides function, in addition, to form as it improves overall aerodynamics and boosts cockpit airflow. Inside the cockpit, the XKGLOW light kit illuminates the footwells, center console, left and right side tubs and under the seats in red, blue or green. The light show can be actuated via the Slingshot LED mobile smartphone app and can be synced to music playlists. The sound system is composed of the Stage 3 Rockford Fosgate Audio kit controlled via the seven-inch touch screen, Ride Command controlled display. The Ride Command infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay, GPS navigation, and weather and traffic overlays. Taking rider and passenger comfort to the next level, the seats offer both heating and cooling options thanks to thermoelectric technology and a flexible graphene material to distribute the temperature. The 2022 Polaris Slingshot Signature LE will be available in both manual and auto-drive, with an MSRP of $34,999 and $36,749, respectively.

DUCATI XDIAVEL NERA – FIRST LOOK DUCATI UNVEILS THE BEAUTIFUL NEW XDIAVEL NERA, OF WHICH ONLY 500 WILL BE MADE. The Ducati XDiavel is a bit of a favorite here at SBI (even the Editor in Chief, Black Moses himself, owns one), but the power cruiser hasn’t seen much love since coming out five years ago. A rolling concoction of brute power and look-at-me bling, the XDiavel is pretty much in a class of its own. Too fast for any Harley-Davidson and too cruisy for the sportbike crowd. And for 2022, Ducati is releasing a special, limited-edition model called the XDiavel Nera. Producing 160 hp from its Testastretta DVT L-twin, the XDiavel is a proper low-riding animal. However, the Nera is a step further. With only 500 units being offered for sale worldwide and costing a pretty $4200 more than the base model XDiavel S, the XDiavel Nera is the culmination of a partnership between Ducati and Italian interior design house Poltrona Frau, a company famous in Italy for collaborating with many of the country’s automotive brands for their luxury leather design needs. It’s not the first time Ducati and Poltrona Frau have joined forces, with the two collaborating on the Ducati Scrambler Club Italia project of 2020. So what does your $4200 extra actually buy you? A seat. That’s right, a seat. You get one of five special leather seats in either Siam Red, Steel Blue, Cemento, India and Selva, as well as a “Black on Black” color scheme for the paint.

There are also little style upgrades like the brake calipers and valve covers painted in Ducati Red and the forged Marchesini wheels painted in gloss black. “The XDiavel Nera project was born from the encounter between two Italian excellences,” said Director of the Centro Stile Ducati, Andrea Ferraresi. “Ducati and Poltrona Frau are two brands with a unique history, they share a passion for beauty and well-made objects, they are strongly Italian and make craftsmanship a distinctive element, always supporting it with sophisticated technological solutions and the use of high-quality materials. The XDiavel Nera perfectly summarizes the values that unite Ducati and Poltrona Frau. It is a unique motorcycle with an unmistakable identity, a splendid expression of the excellence of Made in Italy.” Naturally, the XDiavel Nera will come with its own range of accessories, including the dedicated jet black Nera helmet potential owners can order with the bike. Whether you think paying an extra $4200 for a seat and paint job is worth it is up to you, but bear in mind a Lewis Hamilton LH44 MV Agusta F4 costs nearly half the price more of the F4 RC it was based on just for a fancy paint job, so the Italians have a bit of precedence here. Either way, the Ducati XDiavel Nera is a very spicy looking piece of kit. But if you want one, you better be quick as there are only 500 worldwide going on sale.

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS THE INDIAN PURSUIT - FIRST LOOK INDIAN MOTORCYCLE DEBUTS WHAT IS CLAIMED TO BE THE PINNACLE IN THE V-TWIN TOURING BIKE CLASS, THE 2022 LIQUID-COOLED INDIAN PURSUIT. I love how Indian Motorcycle continues to relentlessly produce quality, performance-focused and performancedriven motorcycles without skimping out on the comfort. Touring bikes have notoriously split the difference when it comes to performance and comfort… Traditionally, you could receive one but not the other. At least not enough to make a difference. But hey, big bikes need love too. And to my point, the new Indian Motorcycle Pursuit checks a lot of boxes in both departments and is aiming to leave a mile-wide grin underneath your helmet. The powerplant of the new Indian Pursuit is Indian's PowerPlus 108 cubic-inch, liquid-cooled V-twin engine

which pushes out 122 horses and 128 foot-pounds of torque. This engine has a feature called PowerPlus calibration which is engineered to make low-speed drivability more manageable. Putting the "T" in touring, the new bike employs many features that make it a suitable road horse. The list includes an adjustable windscreen, vented lower fairings, heated grips, not to mention a total of 35 gallons of storage thanks to the power-locking cargo trunk and accommodating saddlebags. The saddle of the Pursuit is the new Indian Touring Comfort Seat. To further enhance the ride and overall experience, the Indian Pursuit is spotlighted by its seven-inch touchscreen display that is powered by the RIDE COMMAND+ infotainment system. A bonus feature is the vehicle locator

asset used in tandem with the Indian Motorcycle RIDE COMMAND mobile app or via the web to track the last location where the bike was powered on. The Indian Pursuit comes standard with Intuitive Smart Lean Technology, controlled by a Bosch IMU to add cornering control to the dynamic traction control and ABS. You can upgrade your ride via the Pursuit Dark Horse with Premium Package and Pursuit Limited with Premium Package that includes electronically adjustable rear suspension preload from Fox. This suspension upgrade allows you to adjust your preload from the convenience of the bike’s infotainment system. The Pursuit is presented in two versions, the Pursuit Dark Horse and Pursuit Limited. Indian offers a selection of performance and cosmetic upgrade options so you can make the Pursuit more of your own.

Pricing for the Indian Pursuit Dark Horse, available in Black Smoke, Spirit Blue, Silver Quartz Smoke, and Ruby Metallic over Black Metallic, begins at $30,999 and $33,999 for the Pursuit Dark Horse with Premium Package. With Pursuit, we’ve expanded on the unparalleled sophistication of the PowerPlus motor to deliver a classleading, fully-loaded touring machine that combines top-tier performance with unparalleled comfort and advanced tech features, delivering an American V-twin touring experience unlike any other.” - Mike Dougherty, President for Indian Motorcycle.

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS PANIGALE V4 SP2 - FIRST LOOK

20 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2022

DUCATI UNLEASHES ITS "ULTIMATE RACETRACK MACHINE", THE NUMBERED-EDITION 2023 PANIGALE V4 SP2. The 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 SP2 is the culmination of the best of the best premium performance components, presented as a crowning achievement in motorcycle engineering. So let's just get into what components make this SP2 more than another Panigale V4 with a prettier face. For starters, while the platform is the 2022 Ducati Panigale V4 S, this "sport production" edition employs a proper list of performance bit mostly common on the race machines of pro riders on the WorldSBK grid... Namely, the Brembo Stlema R front brake calipers are operated by Brembo's Multiple Click System (MCS) radial pump. The MCS allows the wheelbase of the Panigale V4 SP2 to be adjusted between three presets to dial in brake feel. The front brakes are actuated with an adjustable lever, managed via a remote adjuster positioned by a knob on the left bar grip. The Panigale V4 SP2 rolls on five split-spoke carbon fiber wheels that are 1.4 kilograms lighter than the forged aluminum wheels of the V4 S. The difference of which results in a 26% reduction of inertia at the front, and a reduction of 46% at the rear. That is quite a significant if not drastic decrease. The aluminum front frame employs the Desmosedici Stradale engine as a stressed component while the aluminum swingarm and the seat bracket are connected directly to the engine. The suspension set up of the Panigale V4 SP2 is top tier as a pair of Öhlins NPX25/30 pressurized forks with electronically controlled 125 mm of travel and a pressurized cartridge damping system handle front end duties. At the rear, an Öhlins TTX36 shock does the work. These two components, combined with the Öhlins electronic steering damper absorber and with the electronic steering damper compose the Smart EC 2.0 system. The primary characteristic of this system is the Objective Based Tuning Interface (OBTI) that is managed by "objectives" and not "clicks". The result is significantly smoother and more instinctive

management of the overall suspension system. A Track Evo display mode is an option on the instrument panel that borrows its format from the Ducati MotoGP machines. On display in this mode is all of the pertinent electronic data of the Panigale V4 SP2 on one screen, plus a few bells and whistles. Segments include the tachometer (centered at the top of the screen), gearing (center of the screen), and four sectors with specific colors that exhibit the bike's electronic control features (right side of the screen). The chronometer, number of laps completed and speed are displayed on the left side of the screen. Did I mention that the Panigale V4 SP2 was primarily conceived, developed, and engineered for track or race dace duties? It comes equipped with a GPS module that enables an automatic lap time function. Ducati offers its optional Slick Ducati Performance Software that includes traction control presets for rain or slick tyres, storage of five different race tracks, and another five additional customizable riding modes in addition to the standard four (Race 1, Race 2, Sport and Street). The powerplant of the Panigale V4 SP2 is the counter-rotating crankshaft 1,103 cc Desmosedici Stradale engine that delivers 215.5 hp at 13,000 rpm, available in a full, high, medium and low power mode. Compared to the 2021 Panigale V4 S, that's a performance gain of 1.5 hp. That performance increase is boosted to 228 hp when the optional Akrapovič full titanium Ducati Performance racing exhaust is installed, not to mention the weight saving benefits (total weight with racing exhaust installed: 370 pounds, dry). With an MSRP of $39,500.00, the 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 SP2 arrives in the notable "Winter Test Livery" (matt black fairings, matt carbon rims and wings, bright red accents, brush aluminum tank), each one branded with its number of production. It also includes a race/track kit with purchase, that includes billet aluminum mirror block offs, plate holder removal kit as well an open carbon clutch cover for its STM-EVO SBK dry clutch assembly. The bike is expected to arrive in dealerships later in 2022. Start saving your money... yesterday.

YAMAHA, WITH ITS 2022 XSR900, PUSHES THE BOUNDS OF NEOCLASSICISM AND FORGES INTO THE REALM OF "RETRO COOL", FOR JUST UNDER $10K.

MAHA XSR900 WORDS: ALLAN LANE IMAGES: ADAM CAMPBELL JUNE 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 25

THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA XSR900

I'VE ALWAYS BEEN attracted to naked bikes. It is not so much, the less is more perspective. Instead, it's what is absolutely necessary. And in the modern world of slim, sleek, and slipstream, the neo-classic naked bike class often is lost in the shuffle. Once in while, machines like the new Yamaha XSR900 come along and help push the category to the forefront. The Yamaha XSR900 is by no means pretty and it's not supposed to be. It's handsome. Rugged yet refined. It's old school and new school... at the same damn time. The XSR900 is James Dean and Keanu Reeves and Chadwick Boseman. Drawing upon its own history, Yamaha set its mission to style the new XSR900, blending the nostalgia of heritage and the desires of today's motorcyclists. The modern rendition of the XSR made its debut in 2016, as 700 and 900 models, defining the Yamaha Sport Heritage category. To update the model, Yamaha looked into the history books of its iconic race machines and found elements that were performance-proven and forward-thinking.

When standing next to and visually examing the XSR900, the nod to Yamaha's racing legacy emanate, profoundly. The race-inspired quick-release bodywork, the race bike tail-inspired seat, and the 3.7-gallon flattop fuel tank, are all notes from classic Yamahas from the 70s and 80s. Developing those nods, the XSR900 includes modern features that move it forward, into the now. The electronics package stands out as a premium offering. Borrowing from the Yamaha M1, the XSR900 employs a proper suite of rider aids that include a six-axis IMU (manages traction control, slide control, left or wheelie control, and brake control), four drive modes (1 through 4, from most to least engagement), and quick shifter. This new IMU is more advanced than the M1's and more dialed in with 125 calculations per second and offers the rider more customization in levels of electronic engagement when riding. A slightly larger screen would have made a big difference. Looking at the XSR900 is one thing, but the ride is an absolute execution of joy. There's no other way to say other than that it is a really fun bike to ride. The culmination of ergonomics, power, and suspension... A proper cocktail with all of the right ingredients. And as usual, the testing roads of the Southern California canyons and hills did not disappoint. In the saddle of the XSR900, the components of engineering and design are impressive. Minor details like the ported aluminum headlight brackets and forged aluminum levers and footrests give old-school vibes. Major design high fives are given for the stock bar end mirrors, a first, and the trick fold-away rear passenger footpegs... Innovative and borderline genius.

THE FIRST RIDE: YAMAHA XSR900

34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2022

Being on the larger side of the rider scale, comfort, or the lack thereof, is always a box that needs to be checked for me. There is a difference between "riding on" the bike and "riding" the bike. The XSR900 has you sitting in, as opposed to sitting on the bike. Everything is within reach. I felt connected to the bike but not cramped. This is in part to the new riding position of the 2022 model. The seat is moved forward by 5mm and down by 35mm. The adjustable handlebars now feature a grip point that is 14mm forward and down 35mm. Footpegs, also adjustable, are moved back by 2mm and down by 7mm. This riding position is better suited to match a number of rider types. The chassis of the XSR900 is brand new with improvements to the rigidity of the frame, subframe, and swingarm, compared to the prior model and it contributes to the decreased overall weight of the bike. The curb weight of the 2022 XSR900 is 425 pounds, less 5 pounds than the previous version. A short highway rip allowed for a spirited introduction to the XSR900's CP3 engine, the same powerplant found in the MT-09 and the Tracer 9 GT. This CP3 engine is new for the XSR900 and increases the output to 890cc (up from 847cc), while torque is increased by 6%. Again, this boost in performance, from the 2021 XSR900 is credited to the CP3's crankshaft (3mm longer with 15% increased inertia), shorter connecting rods ( 1.5mm, fractured split) and new concave shaped top forged pistons. Access to this new found power is courtesy of Yamaha's cableless throttle system which exhibits a seamless "roll on" feel, as the throttle position is detected by a sensor at the grip, then engages the throttle valve motor. The XSR900 is a highway ripper. Don't get it twisted. However, it was in the twisties where the torque of the XSR900 really shows up. can really squeeze a lot of the gearing with a huge grin plastered on the inside of your helmet. Diving in and driving out of those corners, again, the XSR900 gets high marks for its stability and handling performance. For the 2022 model, Yamaha has lengthened the swingarm by 59mm. The suspension setup utilizes a pair of 41mm adjustable KYB front forks and an adjustable KYB rear shock. The front end is shorter than the 2021 model by 39mm to match the new lowered position of the steering head. The XSR900 is supplied with ABS as standard and the Brembo radial master cylinder with the 298mm dual rotors compose a great front-end braking setup offering great feel, especially when trial braking in the twisties. The confidence in the XSR900 is complemented by the impressive grip and feel of the Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tires that it is fitted with. The 2022 Yamaha XSR900, available in Legend Blue and Raven, has an MSRP of $9,999.00. You're getting a lot of bike and massive amounts of fun for under ten grand. The XSR900 packs a load of unexpected joy and is just fun, both in the straights and in the bends. THE FIRST RIDE: 2022 GSX-S1000 GT+

IT APPEARS THE Big S is starting to wake after a long, Covid-induced slumber. Suzuki, the great sleeping giant of the motorcycle industry, hasn’t done much of anything on the street bike front for quite some time but in the space of one month, we’ve got three new models to play with (well, essentially the same model dressed in different clothes, but let’s not be picky). We tested the $11,299 MSRP GSX-S1000 naked bike back in March and while it indeed had a few flaws, overall it left a nice taste on the motorcycling pallet. That same bike is now the basis for the GSX-S1000 GT+, which, if you don’t wish to read any further, is a wellexecuted, if a little old-school, sport tourer.

get a pair of shiny 36-liter side cases matched to the ignition key. You could always buy a base model and buy the cases separately via the Suzuki accessory range, but if you did that you’ll end up paying more overall, so, buy the GT+. A closer look under the skin reveals a machine that’s essentially a GSX-S naked bike in drag with a few choice upgrades. The same 999cc inline four-cylinder engine that traces its heritage from the legendary GSX-R1000 K5 resides inside the aluminum twin-spar chassis; there’s the same six-speed gearbox mated to that lovely quick-shifter we enjoyed so much on the naked bike; it even has the same seat height of 31.9 inches and the same wheelbase of 57.5 inches.

That little "+" symbol at the end of the GT name gives this model a $650 premium over the The difference comes in rider comfort and, base GT at $13,799 MSRP, but for that, you thank the good Lord, the electronics. 42 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2022

THE FIRST RIDE: 2022 GSX-S1000 GT+

44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2022

The former is so due to the bodywork and screen that alleviates much of the buffeting you normally experience on a naked bike, the latter thanks to the 6.5-inch TFT dash that, incredibly, is the first time Suzuki has fitted such a unit to any of its production machines. Oh well, better late than never.

or gimmicks, and simply light years ahead of horrid dash Suzuki fitted to the GSX-S naked bike. But when you strip it all back, the genes of the GSX-R1000 K5 shine through. This is a gruff, nasty sounding motorcycle that’s very much angled more to the sport side of sport touring. The intoxicating induction roar, the massive midrange torque, the aggressive nature of the chassis, it’s all there. The GSX-S1000 GT+ is very much like an athlete from 17 years ago — distinguished, accomplished, but still with a bit of fire in the belly. A leopard can’t change its spots, after all.

And Suzuki has done a good job executing the ride command system. This is still not a "digital sportbike" so no IMU, Cornering ABS, lean angle sensitive traction control or electronic suspension to fiddle with. All that’s there is your three riding modes, five-stage traction control, and whether you want to turn the quickshifter on or off (we’ve no idea why you’d ever want The throttle response can be pretty abrupt in to turn it off, it works so well). A mode so like the GSX-S, I quickly switched On top of that, there’s cruise control, and you to B mode and left it there. B mode seems can pair your phone for navigation, music, etc. to give the best-closed throttle response and It’s a simple suite, executed well, with no frills torque delivery, with A mode reserved for only

not independently controlled by computers.

KYB has done a good job with the suspension, although in standard settings it’s a tad springy for me so I progressively slowed down the rebound damping front and rear across the two test days. However, ride quality is nice for both highway touring and backroads scratching, and with no electronics, you can actually feel what’s going on beneath you as the suspension operates in the analog world,

The price reflects the fact this machine is largely devoid of electronics, which in my view is a good thing. Cornering ABS and lean angle sensitive TC is all well and good, but do you really need it? The 2022 Suzuki GSX-S1000 GT+ is a case of everything you need and nothing you don’t. This is a thoroughly enjoyable ride that harks back to the days of real sporty sports tourers. THE GRID: SILLY SEASON 2022 TO SAY THE 2022 MotoGP season has been full of surprises is like saying the "Top Gun - Maverick” movie is kinda good. It’s incredible by the way. Who could have predicted, Enea “The Beast” Bastianini snagging three victories and eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez with zilch! Through all of this, it is Fabio Quartararo who standings with an eight Esparagaro, yet another loco championship run.

THE RIDERS WHO YOU NEED MILK CARTONS, BLOODHOUNDS AND AN APB TO FIND OUT WHERE THEY ARE... Franky Morbidelli, Maverick Vinales, Jorge Martin and Alex Marquez. It pains me to write this but let’s be honest, I almost forgot Franco Morbidelli was even in the championships. His name gets mentioned as much as Polio, Mannix and Barnaby Jones! I get the feeling that along with a disgruntled Raul Fernandez and Miguel Oliveira, Franco could be on a seat that is muy caliente. Vinales finishes like a lion but starts like a kitten. Fix those problems and the old Maverick just might prevail. With Martin, you just kinda get the feeling that he’s gonna eventually show up. But when is the question? Alex Marquez is hard at work but it's just not happening now! Another year with LCR Honda should help. If not, who knows where the two-time World Champ will land. Silly Season 2022 rumors are like chess. Once one pawn is moved, the rest fall into line. Watch Joan Mir and Alex Rins. These two deserve a great ride and I hope they get one. What Suzuki did by pulling the wool over their eyes and discontinuing their MotoGP program in 2023, means no upgrades. The 2020 World Champion deserves better. The rumor is that Mir and Repsol Honda have been flirting but Mir's position is... if you like it then show me the money! Talks have stalled. With a Marquez future in doubt, this will be the domino that we are waiting to fall. The 62 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | JUNE 2022

rest will then will fall into place. The Big Surprise... The biggest surprise is the emergence of Aprilia, more specifically Aleix Esparago. Espargaro has not had a win after being in the world championships since 2005. This year he has one and is second in the championships. Aprilia will also have a satellite team next year so expect some big names to be signed. Watch Aleix! He’s got the stones and the machine that breed confidence! The Rookies: Darryn Binder and Raul Fernandez... Fernandez set the world on fire in Moto2 and so far, not so much in MotoGP. The most promising as of now is Remy Gardner. Gardner seems mature and ready for GP. With KTM, it seems the bike is about as finicky as a politician after a school shooting. If the bike problems get ironed out, watch out for the orange gang gang! The Champ doing what a Champion does... Plain and simple, Fabio Quartararo is showing why he is the 2021 World Champion. week. He's riding like Hell but remains unsigned. More than likely, he'll sign with Yamaha but in racing, as in life... you just never know If I had to give the racing a grade this year, I'd say B plus. Mugello dispelled the rumors of procession racing but these things need to get ironed out or MotoGP is going to be 2021 Formula One. In the throngs of Silly Season 2022, I still say, as I have been for the past decade, it all depends on what happens with Marc Marquez. As Marc goes, so does MotoGP. We all at SBI wish the Champ a speedy recovery and that he can continue to do what he loves doing. And that's winning races.
