Celebrate Life! Expo In our society, aging is seen as losing something; losing beauty, losing fitness, or losing strength.

This portrayal of loss supports the perception of aging as an unwanted, unwelcome and loathed process. We are constantly bombarded with anti-aging images in our media, and we have multi-million dollar industries that thrive from fear and this perception of aging as something we must escape or prolong.

The irony (in this anti-aging behavior and thought process) is that we are taught from the beginning of our academic journey that knowledge is power. One can not attain knowledge without experience and/or education, and both of these

characteristics of knowledge take time.

We are being trained to appreciate knowledge but to disdain the very process - time. We are trained to want the knowledge but don’t want the product that comes with it - aging.

I became part of PED, Celebrate Life!

Expo, because PED honors the simple fact that aging is not something to be feared but something to be examined,supported, and celebrated. At PED, aging is the beauty, knowledge is the product, and we honor both.

The Celebrate Life! Expo is an opportunity to learn about the many resources to support living well. We have worked very hard to put together an event that encompasses the many facets of aging successfully, from the hottest travel destinations to the latest research in Sleep Apnea.

Also we are the only Expo that offers over 20 screenings. Where else could you

pay $5 (in advance) or $10 at the door, and get bone density, mouth cancer, sight and hearing, depression, and oxygen level screenings to name just a few! It would cost more that this to visit your doctor or go to the nearest pharmacy just for one screening.

Whether you learned how to square dance, or participated in Thai chi, whether you spent the day in our presentation rooms learning from our many presenters, or took the day just to take in the sights; at the end of the day I hope you come out encouraged about yourself, with a positive outlook on aging. Because aging is a journey we take without decision, but we can make the decision to do it with grace and in celebration.

As the Executive Director of PED, I have the pleasure of working with PED (Prevention Education & Development) volunteers to provide life enhancing programs for seniors and their families in the Inland Northwest. Whether working with our 19 member board, or helping with one of our five current programs, I am constantly reminded how lucky I am to collaborate with passionate people who have a vision for a better community.

The event is taking place on Saturday, May 12, starting at 9:00 am and ending at 4:30 pm. Our exhibitors will be there to help you enjoy the day and learn from them.

Along with a wide variety of exhibitors, we will also have medical screening, cooking demonstrations, and a variety of speakers, seminars, and entertainment all focused on retirees and “soon to be” retirees.

There will also be door prizes and free stuff. Representatives from PED will also be available to answer any questions you may have about the services we provide.

A Vision of One-The Result of Many Prevention, Education and Development“Celebrate Life! Expo” Programs for Successful Aging programs which could ultimately benefit the entire nation and save billions in government funding of Medicare and Medicaid.

Over forty-five years ago, a dynamic “successful aging” idea was envisioned by John F. Haugan, PED founder: Create and develop a program of disease prevention and early detection and bring screenings, education, and resources to the senior population through housing developments, and programs of community development.

John was a pastor, founding director for Missoula’s senior center, and Montana’s coordinator for the second White House Conference on Aging. He met hundreds of people with serious health challenges which he believed were preventable.

John knew that early detection of disease could improve the quality of millions of lives and prevent pre-mature death by catching threatening health issues in early stages before they became catastrophic. With that heartfelt believe, he became an assertive national advocate to develop needed prevention and screening

His archive research and study of nutrition, exercise, positive life styles, spiritual growth, and the aging process never ceased. Rev. Haugan and his family moved to Spokane in 1970 following his hire as founding director of Lilac Plaza Retirement Community. In short order, as he was able to serve over 200 grateful residents; his passion to DO something in prevention and education grew and he knew he needed to “do it now”! He did. A remarkable program of prevention with good nutrition, exercise, education, and nurse services plus regularly scheduled screenings began at Lilac Plaza.

Its success motivated John and teams from Lilac Plaza, Corbin, Sinto, Southside senior centers, and Senior Times to attend the week long Comprehensive Health Education Foundation’s 1992 Northwest Wellness Conference for Seniors in Seaside Oregon.

It provided inspiration and challenge for the Spokane teams to develop a senior health conference led by and build upon John Haugan’s thirty year “vision of one”. The Spokane teams formed it’s first steering committee for the 1994 Spokane Senior Wellness Conference. In 1998, it became and remained the Inland Northwest Senior Wellness Conference until 2011 when it was renamed; “Celebrate Life!

Expo” to ensure that its excellent programs reached the needs of the burgeoning population of Boomers and actively retired. The

area enthusiastically embraced the exciting event. Since its beginning, it has been supported by 407 sponsors, 1621 exhibitors, 276 screenings, 100 annual event day senior volunteers and reached over 22,200 from 29 communities in the Inland Northwest, Montana, and Canada.

MONARCH Arts MONARCH Arts is a 12 year old program for seniors that offers art making and exhibition for health and healing. From its inception in 1998 this program has drawn hundreds of participants who are coached and supported in their innate creativity through the arts. Beyond opportunities to exhibit finished works, participants form relationships, learn from each other, and utilize the creative process to cope with life events. Members who have had significant life challenges have also had access to counseling services offered through state registered clinical social workers using the arts in therapy.

Our largest participation comes from a MONARCH Arts project known to many as Mandala Making. In these groups, offered at area retirement communities and senior centers, participants work with templates and, through

the use of watercolor pens, add color to create art reminiscent of the most beautiful of stained glass windows. The activity is done in a quiet reflective space with soft music in the back ground. Group members often comment on the activity’s ability to reduce stress, and improve fine motor skills. Many take home templates to work on during the week interval between groups. One avid participant shared recently that she does not know how she would do without Mandala Making in her life.

And MONARCH members like to socialize… actually Party! This spring’s annual luncheon was hosted by Rockwood Lane Retirement Community and featured a salad luncheon and “Wearable art Style Show.” Models showed the finest in remade clothing, painted fabric attire, and lightly used fashions. The afternoon was extraordinary.

You can visit our MONARCH Art Exhibit at this year’s Celebrate Life! Expo.

This year’s exhibit will feature fine art, photography, mandalas, and quilts provided by the Washington State Quilter’s association.

Try your hand at mandala making at our mandala table within the exhibit. But watch out, you may get hooked. Mandala making can be addicting. You, as a participant, may also help determine the winners of our exhibit entries by casting your vote for your favorite.

Ballots will be available in the exhibit area. Please plan to join us as part of your total Celebrate Life! Expo experience.
