Seek all the summer words hidden in this puzzle. Can you find and circle each one?
Spokane’s unique geography is home to many animals. Knowing who we share our environment with is important to understanding our place in our ecosystem. How do the ways we live impact the other creatures who live around us?
The mountain lion, also known as a cougar, is an apex predator. This means they are at the top of the food chain. They help feed the entire ecosystem as they leave remains of their prey for other scavengers like foxes, skunks, birds, and even beetles and other insects
Mountain lions feed primarily on deer and elk They will also hunt mice, coyotes, rabbits, and other small animals
Mountain lions are solitary and secretive animals and should be left alone! Remember to hike with friends and make noise when outdoors to avoid surprising wildlife.
Moose are the largest member of the deer family. They typically live independently of one another, though the young will remain with their mothers for about a year.
Favorite Foods
Moose eat a wide variety of vegetation, including conifers during the winter and aquatic plants in the summer They are known to stay underwater for as long as 50 seconds!
Moose favor flat wooded areas near lakes and streams They are best observed from a distance as they are not afraid to defend themselves!
Marmots are rodents from the squirrel family. They are larger than typical American gray squirrels and have short brown fur and a medium-length tail.
Favorite Foods
Marmots are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants They primarily survive on leaves, seeds, flowers, nuts and grains
These shy creatures can be found near green fields and rocky boulders—they always have a hiding spot nearby! Approach quietly and you might hear a marmot give off a loud whistle when it senses danger.
Though Spokane’s turkeys were first introduced in the 1960s, they have now become a bustling naturalized community of birds!
Favorite Foods
Turkeys are scavengers and eat a wide variety of foods, but they prefer leaves and seeds, acorns, grasshoppers, forbs (flowering plants), and wild strawberries
