Find things around your house or outside to make a collage! Tape or glue pressed leaves and flowers, cutouts from old magazines or mail, and more to this page.

Did you know that creating stories is an important part of helping kids of all ages develop their literacy skills—even before they’re able to read? Expand your vocabulary, sharpen your critical thinking skills, foster empathy, and inspire creativity—all while having fun creating a colorful story!

Directions

1. Roll a die 3 times. Every time you roll, a different element of your story is revealed.

2. After you’ve finished rolling, take the character, setting, and problem you rolled and use them to craft a story with a beginning, middle, and end.

3. Enjoy rolling even more stories! Write your favorite one down and draw some pictures to go with it.

Write your story in this box!

Example: You roll a 2, 4, and 6. It would be a story about a snowman in a dance class who received a mysterious message in code.

PROMPT & DRAW

The following prompts are inspired by artist Sol LeWitt’s drawing instructions. The rules are simple and open-ended so you can interpret the prompts in different ways and end up with a piece uniquely your own. Use the space below to draw out one of the following prompts.

1.Make a drawing with circles and squares using pink and green colors. Add three squiggly lines in it.

2.Make yellow zig-zag lines and add ten circles of any color.

3.Draw a triangle, four parallel lines, and use any color that starts with the letter “B”.

4.Make a family photo using five colors.

5.Can you make a drawing using letters of the alphabet?

6.Use only rectangles to tell a story.

7.Draw with only primary colors (red, blue, yellow).

8.Can you make a drawing with only straight lines?

Who is Sol LeWitt (1928-2007)?

LeWitt was an American artist who specialized in minimalist and conceptual art. He is well-known for his instruction in geometric artwork, wall drawings, and sculptures.
