Notes From the Publisher & Staff

Shockers Basketball and Other Fall Favorites There are a few things we want to do when we start feeling that chill in the air, those crunchy leaves gathering in the yard, the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer. First, we want to shop for cozy fall clothing – items to keep us toasty but trendy while out running errands or gathering together for the Thanksgiving meal. Check out the cute outfits in this month’s fashion section. You’ll love the cozy sweaters and fashionable jackets – both dressy and casual – that our great boutiques provided for this issue. Second, we want to feather our nests. Spending more time indoors means rearranging furniture and bringing in some new accessories like pillows, vases and coffee table books. We got a chance to peruse the beautiful pieces at Design Source Interiors in Andover while doing our fashion shoot there for this issue. Perusing turned into buying, and we left with several beautiful items for a fall home update. We encourage you to check out this great store! Speaking of nest-feathering, don’t miss the new monthly feature “Design: Distinctly by Dawn.” In her inaugural column, designer Dawn Tucker will get you thinking about holiday tablescapes and some great ideas you will want to incorporate in your family events this year. Third, we start thinking basketball! We’re Shockers fans through and through, and this year we’re especially excited for two new

head coaches — men’s coach Paul Mills and women’s coach Terry Nooner. We got to visit with Mills for this month’s cover story and we’re excited to see what kind of magic he’ll bring this year. If you see us at Koch Arena, be sure to say hi! The changing of seasons is always exciting, and we’re glad you’re here to share the experience with us. XO, Jody and Amy

Paul Mills

Uncompromising New Coach Brings High Expectations for Players and Self

8

Fast Play and Rebounds Written by Joe Stumpe

The fact that Paul Mills has watched the movie “Hoosiers” hundreds of times isn’t all you need to know about Wichita State’s new basketball coach. But it’s a good starting point. Like the main character in that movie, Mills once coached at a tiny high school. Also like that character, Mills is uncompromising in what he expects from his players. In a pre-practice interview last month at Koch Arena, Mills said a standard “has to be set. Like, ‘These are the expectations.’ And then you’re just trying to find people who want to meet those standards. And then you’re getting rid of the people who don’t want to meet those standards.” “As I tell the players, ‘You’re high-level people, with high-level standards, and we’re expected to play high-level basketball.’ ” Through a career rise that looks unlikely from the outside, Mills has by all accounts held himself to the highest standards of all. The son of a Texas pastor, Mills grew up idolizing Michael Jordan. He was a good, though undersized, high school basketball player in Houston who reportedly suited up for just one college basketball game — for NAIA school Southern Wesleyan University — before a scary back injury ended his playing days. He coached his first team, at a small Christian high school, while working full-time as a bank analyst. He quit the banking job and took a huge pay cut to teach and coach at another Christian school, whose team he took to the semi-finals of the Texas state tournament. After serving as a volunteer assistant at Rice University, Mills was hired by Baylor coach Scott Drew and spent 14 years helping transform that program from one of the worst in the country to one of the best.

“I would prefer to play fast and not turn the ball over,” Mills said. But he also stressed that he doesn’t “have a quote–unquote ‘system’ … It is, man, what do we do well? And let’s find a way to do that well. This is a really good rebounding team. We were able to find that out in Greece. And we have guys who are really good at pursuing the ball, defensively and offensively. So, we need to be good at rebounding.” The Shockers return three players who logged significant minutes last year: Xavier Bell, Isaac Abidde and Kenny Pohto. From the transfer portal Mills snagged Ronnie DeGray III (Missouri), Colby Rogers (Siena), Dalen Ridgnal (Missouri State), Quincy Ballard (Florida State), Harlond Beverly (Miami) and Bijan Cortes (Oklahoma), along with incoming freshmen Yanis Bamba (Canada) and Joy Ighovodja (Nigeria). Fans will also likely see a more animated coach on the sidelines. Although he doesn’t curse, Mills notched technical fouls and became somewhat of a target of fans of other Summit League schools while at Oral Roberts. Mills acknowledged he “can be fiery toward officials” in a Q&A with Shocker announcer Mike Kennedy. It’s a trait he apparently leaves on the basketball court. In 2020, Miles earned a master’s degree from Dallas Theological Seminary. Last year, he was one of 25 finalists for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award, given to the Division 1 coach who best displays moral integrity off the court. He and his wife, Wendy, who he’s known since the seventh grade, have two teenage daughters, Audrey and Abbey. Mills said his family appreciates the welcome they’ve received here. After joking that it’s deserved “because we’re still undefeated,” Mills said he’s been able to focus on his passion — coaching — without much attention. “There’s the occasional (conversation) at QT — ‘Are you the new coach at Wichita State?’ I don’t think people know my name for the most part. It’s good. If I’m not at the house, I’m at the office, and if I’m not at the office, I’m at the house. I don’t really venture out much.”

Along the way, stories about Mills’ work ethic, rapport with young players and metrics-based approach to the game — along with a fondness for fast driving and gift of gab — spread among fellow coaches and basketball insiders. His reputation spread after being hired by Oral Roberts University in 2017, taking over a team that had won eight games the previous season. In six years under Mills, Oral Roberts compiled a 106–83 record, going to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2021 and notching an undefeated Summit League regular season last year. He accomplished that despite some obstacles to recruiting posed by the school’s conservative religious culture. In March, he was hired to replace Isaac Brown, whose teams went 48–34 over three years, with one American Athletic Conference championship and NCAA tourney appearance. In the months since, Mills has brought in his own staff (most with ties to Oral Roberts or Baylor), put together a roster and set an ambitious non-conference schedule featuring games against K-State, KU and Missouri. The team went 3–0 in exhibition games played during a trip to Greece in August. If Mills’ teams at Oral Roberts are a guide, Shocker fans can expect to see a higher-scoring team than in recent years. Two Dynamic Guards and New Coach Terry Nooner Lead Shocker Women Into the Season Written by Joe Stumpe

As an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Kansas, Terry Nooner found himself being headhunted by some of the top programs in the country as the Jayhawks’ fortunes rose. “I remember telling my boss, (KU head coach) Brandon Schneider, the year before that I wouldn’t leave KU for another assistant’s job,” he recalls. “It would have to be a head coaching job. And I told him specifically, I said a job like Wichita State.” Terry Nooner

He was hired to coach the Shockers women’s team in April. “I wish I could figure out what mindset my mind was in when I said those words so when I talk about the Powerball, I can say it the same way,” Nooner joked last month. For now, Nooner is focused on winning basketball games as WSU’s 10th head women’s basketball coach. He replaces Keitha Adams, who went 80–93 over six years and got to the postseason once — a first-round loss to Kansas State in last year’s NIT tournament. Adams returned to UTEP, where she previously coached 12 years. Nooner is probably best known to local basketball fans as a former guard at KU from 1997–2000, helping lead Roy Williams’ teams to three Big 12 championships, four NCAA tournaments and one Sweet Sixteen. Since then, he has coached at Southern Illinois, Alabama, Maryland, Texas and for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, in addition to KU. The Shockers return nine players from last year’s 18–15 team but only one player — guard DJ McCarty — who ranked in the top five in scoring. McCarty also led the team in assists and steals. Nooner landed another talented guard, Tre’Zure Jobe, as a transfer from Emporia State, where she was a two time All-American. Jobe won a state championship while playing at Wichita South High for Antwain Scales, who joined Nooner’s staff this spring. “We’re going to be guard oriented,” Nooner said. “We have two dynamic guards who play well together. They both can play the point; they both can play off the ball.” “We have very good forwards who are not necessarily back-to-thebasket players but are very athletic and mobile and can play on the perimeter,” he added. “We want to make sure we try to keep the paint open and look to attack the basket and create drives and kick threes.” Not surprisingly, Nooner has added a home-and-away series with KU to the schedule, with the Jayhawks coming to Koch Arena on Dec. 10. Nooner said his players aspire to play an up-tempo style, which they’ll likely get a chance to do in their first regular season game, a Nov. 6 road trip to the University of Oklahoma. The Sooners averaged nearly 85 points a game last year while finishing fourth in the Big 12 with a 25–9 record. “You want to play fast, we’re going to give you your first test right out the gate,” Nooner said.

Long-Term Care Options Long-term care is one of those topics that no one likes to talk about. Perhaps it is because we don’t like to think of ourselves as not being independent and having to rely on others. Or, maybe it’s that paying for long-term care (LTC) is so expensive. Ignoring the possibility of needing long-term care can be very dangerous to your retirement plan. The government says that there is a 70% chance that you will need long-term care after age 65. And, you might need this care for three years or five years or even longer. What is your plan to pay for these expenses?

SELF-INSURE

If you have enough resources, you might be able to pay for LTC expenses out-of-pocket from your assets. But you should still do a comprehensive financial plan to make sure you will have enough money to cover these potential expenses. According to a study by Genworth, assisted living in Wichita costs about $65,000 per year today. The average age that someone needs care is around 80. So, if you are younger than that, then inflation is going to affect these costs. For example, if you are 60 years old today, then the projected costs for assisted living in 20 years is $117,000 per year. If you need skilled nursing, the costs in 20 years are projected to be $150,000 per year. Even if you have enough to pay those expenses for yourself, will you have enough for your surviving spouse to continue to maintain the same lifestyle?

TRADITIONAL LTC

Traditional LTC insurance can be a good solution for LTC expenses, but what if you are fortunate enough to not need nursing care? Then, all of the premiums you paid for this coverage are gone — there is no death benefit on these policies. In addition, premiums can go up on these policies over time. If you are living on a fixed income and your LTC insurance premium increases by 30 to 50%, will you still be able to afford it? If not, you’ll have to reduce your benefit or let the policy lapse. Fortunately, there are some better options for you to consider.

years. The fee for this feature is nominal and can help with LTC expenses. You can also get a fixed-rate annuity that has a LTC benefit that would double the amount of your annuity to pay for LTC expenses.

LIFE INSURANCE-BASED

Solutions to pay for LTC costs are also available on certain types of life insurance policies. On an asset-based life insurance policy, it looks and feels much like a traditional LTC policy, but it has a death benefit. So, if you don’t use the benefit, your beneficiaries would receive the death benefit and this could cover all or some of the expenses you incurred. Another life insurance product has a LTC rider on the policy that effectively lets you borrow your own death benefit to pay for LTC expenses. Depending on how much you spend on care, your beneficiaries may not receive much of the death benefit, but you will have used the policy for your benefit. This is my personal favorite method of protecting against future LTC expenses.

BOTTOM LINE

Everyone needs to have a plan for how they are going to pay for LTC expenses. The best way to do this is through comprehensive financial planning. Fortunately, you have many options for addressing long-term care. Seek the advice of a qualified financial planner so you can evaluate the best way to tackle potential LTC expenses.

ANNUITY-BASED

A couple types of annuities can help with LTC expenses. On some indexed annuities designed to pay a lifetime income stream, a feature is available that would double this guaranteed income to pay for LTC expenses for up to five 14

Share the Season, Share the Joy NONPROFIT FILLS THE GAPS, HELPING OVER 4,200 FAMILIES This year Share the Season is celebrating 23 years of serving families in the community: Funds raised through this program are used to fill the gaps left by other assistance programs. Over the past two-and-a-half decades, Share the Season has raised over $4.4 million dollars and served more than 4,200 families, thanks to the generosity of Wichita and Sedgwick County citizens.

Samantha did reach out to The Wichita Cancer Foundation for help with insurance. In addition, she applied for Medicaid, but it would take some time before hearing whether she was approved for insurance. With her recent loss of income and continued treatment for cancer, Samantha also applied for benefits, along with applying for unemployment to try to secure some short-term relief. Unfortunately, a representative told her it would take 60 days for her applications to be processed. Samantha was looking for different, permanent employment when she learned about the Share the Season program. She contacted Share the Season for possible assistance with some of her medical bills. Share the Season was able to assist with a total of $1,500 paid toward Samantha’s medical bills to help provide some relief during this time of emotional, medical and financial hardship.

A Share the Season Story Samantha (name has been changed to protect privacy) was undergoing chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer when her FMLA expired in December of 2022. Samantha received an email from her employer on Dec. 14, 2022, stating she was no longer an employee of the company. This also meant she would lose her medical insurance through her company at the end of December. Samantha was completely blindsided by her termination since she had worked full-time throughout her chemotherapy treatment. Because she had only missed three to five days of work throughout her treatment, she was confused when her employer said in the email that her reduced work schedule and increased absences placed a burden on the company. 16

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

With

Dr. Karen E. Wilson, PT, DPT Chief Executive Officer Advanced and Preferred Physical Therapy

Q. Tell us a little about your background. Who is Karen outside of the physical therapy world? A. I grew up in Garden Plain, Kansas, in a family of five children, of which I am the youngest. We are a close-knit family and my parents were hard workers and instilled that work ethic in us. I am married to my husband, Eric, and we have three boys, Liam (11), Jonah (10), and Sawyer (4). They are the loves of my life, and when I am not working, I spend my free time with them. We are active and enjoy playing outside, fishing, riding bikes, shooting hoops, and playing soccer and catch. They have taught me an appreciation for nature (catching turtles, frogs and snakes) and have also taught me patience and humility.

Q. What made you choose the physical therapy path? A. I had an interest in physical therapy while gaining my

undergraduate degree at Pittsburg State University. I was fortunate in that I had a friend whose mother was the human resources director at the local hospital in Pittsburg, and she helped me get a job in the outpatient physical therapy department. I was intrigued by the therapists who developed relationships with patients and helped them get better physically. I fell in love with the profession after working there for three months, and have been working in the field ever since.

Q. How was the journey from physical therapist to CEO? A. I didn’t know that leadership was what I wanted to do, and

while in school to get hands-on experience and to get your name in the community.

Q. Why did you decide to become involved with the Jingle Bell Run?

A. Partnering with the Arthritis Foundation as corporate chair

coming into a leadership role just naturally happened. I accepted my first leadership role at the age of 29, after being a staff therapist for four years. I was hired as the clinic director for one clinic and then had the opportunity to move to a larger location. I moved into a regional director role, and two-and-ahalf years ago I got a call from our parent company asking me to move into the role of CEO of Advanced and Preferred Physical Therapy. Through this growth and development, I have found my real passion is building relationships with both employees and patients.

Q. What would be your best advice for someone interested in

pursuing a career in healthcare? A. Stay focused in school, strive to get good grades, and network with other healthcare professionals by shadowing early on to determine if healthcare is the profession for you. I encourage all those seriously considering the field to find a part-time job

of the Jingle Bell Run is a natural fit for us as a company. A core part of our vision at Advanced and Preferred Physical Therapy is that we are involved in and give back to our communities. Our employees have joined together to raise funds and awareness about arthritis by donating their time, money and expertise by making raffle baskets, hosting jeans or hat days in their clinics for a donation, and promoting the Jingle Bell Run to our patients and their family members. We would love to have you join us on our mission on December 9, 2023. Be there with bells on!

REAL PLASTIC SURGEONS. REAL RESULTS. FaceTite Procedure: FaceTite uses radio-frequency energy so you get surgical results with dramatically less downtime. FaceTite is comparable to a mini facelift without the scars. You’ll notice a dramatic improvement in skin laxity as it melts fat and tightens skin on facial and neck areas with sagging skin. Facetite is usually best for patients with only mild skin laxity on their lower face and neck. Downtime: Up to one week By Nataliya Biskup, MD, Amy Sprole, MD, and Joseph Spaniol, MD Nousette Jefferson Photography | Instagram: @njeffphoto

The Full Spectrum of Facial Rejuvenation

Feeling confident can sometimes take years to achieve. Yet, as we age, that once plentiful bucket of self-esteem can wither away each time we look in a mirror. Often, depleted of self-esteem, patients come to us wanting to erase the effects of aging on their faces. Age, heredity, environmental factors, gravity, sun damage and weight fluctuations cause fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and lost volume. When you choose surgery with one of our experienced board-certified plastic surgeons, we can take 10 to 15 years off your face for longlasting results. Let’s look at your options for facial rejuvenation.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Procedure: This common surgical procedure helps improve the appearance of your eyelids, including your upper lids or lower lids. If you have loose, sagging skin that creates folds on the upper eyelid that may impair your vision, eyelid surgery can help. It also helps with bags under your eyes, excess skin and drooping lower eyelids. Downtime: Patients are generally ready to return to work and light, normal activity in one to two weeks.

Brow Lift Surgery Procedure: A brow lift reduces the wrinkle lines that develop horizontally across your forehead. It also helps with lines on the bridge of your nose and between your eyes, such as frown lines. A brow lift also raises low hanging brows when they hood your upper eyelids. You’ll find your eyebrows are more alert and in a more youthful position. Downtime: Patients are generally ready to return to work and light, normal activity in one to two weeks, with full recovery in four to six weeks.

Neck Lift Surgery

Before

After

Before

After

Facelift Surgery Procedure: Facelift surgery reverses the effects of aging by providing long-lasting, natural-looking results. It’s the ultimate facial rejuvenation with the most dramatic results, giving your face a tighter, more youthful look. A facelift eliminates excess fat and skin, tightens facial tissue, and gives you a more contoured appearance. This surgery targets the areas of the face from the cheekbones down through the neck (it doesn’t treat the eyes and brows). Downtime: Patients are generally ready to return to work and light, normal activity in two to four weeks.

Laser Facial Sculpting Procedure: The laser facelift is great for those who aren’t quite ready for a facelift. It gives you some of the benefits of a traditional facelift and is a minimally invasive surgery with little downtime. In addition, you have longer-lasting results than many injectables. Laser facial sculpting gently targets your trouble spots where fat collects and the skin becomes lax on your face and neck, and is usually best for patients with only mild skin laxity on their lower face and neck.

Procedure: Many people have a double chin and loose skin on their neck and jowls. This surgical procedure improves those signs of aging on your jawline and neck. It can eliminate excess fat in the lower face (jowl) area and excess fatty deposits under the chin. A neck lift can also help if you have loose neck skin or muscle banding in your neck. Downtime: Patients are generally ready to return to work and light, normal activity in one to two weeks, with full recovery in four to six weeks. (All of the above surgical procedures are done under general anesthesia for the comfort of the patient.)

Skin Care Treatments Protect your investment with continued skin care treatments like injectables, fillers, laser treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, medical-grade skin products and more. Our team at PSC Aesthetics can help you look and feel your best after your surgical procedures.

Ready to Learn More? The three-board certified plastic surgeons at the Plastic Surgery Center are uniquely qualified to help you with your facial rejuvenation procedures. Please contact us at 316.688.7500 for your consultation!

Downtime: Up to one week Plastic surgery involves many choices; the most important is selecting a surgeon you can trust. Expect exceptional results when you have your procedures performed by plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, like Dr. Sprole, Dr. Biskup, and Dr. Spaniol. These specially trained doctors have at least six years of surgical training and experience, with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery.

With

Dr. Terry Klein

Partner at Wichita Research Facility AMR Written by Caroline Jones

If you or a loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, Dr. Terry Klein offers a unique opportunity to have a positive impact on your personal treatment plan and future Alzheimer’s patients. The AMR Research Facility in East Wichita is looking for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease to help with a recent study that aims to increase deficient levels of progranulin in the brain and, by extension, decrease unhealthy amounts of destructive chemicals.

Q. What is Alzheimer’s disease? A. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia. Of

the over 55 million people that battle dementia across the world, we’ve estimated Alzheimer’s patients at about 60 to 70 percent. It is characterized by a gradual decline in a person’s ability to function, think, interact with their environment and remember past events, and this process can take anywhere from a couple of years to decades.

Q. Who is most at risk for Alzheimer’s? A. There’s a pretty large combination of factors that can

cause Alzheimer’s disease. It can stem from agerelated changes in the brain, which is why youngeronset or early-onset Alzheimer’s refers to patients under the age of 65. Currently, about 6.5 million people in the United States at or over the age of 65 live with Alzheimer’s. Other possible causes can stem from a person’s genes, environment and lifestyle. All of these factors really differ from person to person.

Q. How do you know if you have mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease?

A. Well, there are three stages of Alzheimer’s – mild,

moderate and severe – and I think understanding what it looks like to have severe Alzheimer’s can help clarify this question. Severe stage usually includes aroundthe-clock assistance with daily personal care like eating, dressing and using the bathroom. Many patients with severe Alzheimer’s are unable to walk, sit, swallow or hold up their head without assistance, and it’s pretty common to see an inability to control bladder and bowel functions.

Q. What are you hoping to achieve with your current study?

A. By developing and using a new chemical, we hope to

improve progranulin, one of the regulating hormones in the brain, in Alzheimer’s patients. Progranulin moderates different types of chemicals in the brain, which is super important. Without this, your brain could produce too much of a destructive chemical. This is also crucial for regular neurological communication between a line of nerves. Basically, progranulin processes chemicals that tell nerves to keep carrying signals, so it’s kind of like that game “Telephone.” Without progranulin, messages and signals can get lost or messed up really easily. We’ve found that some people genetically produce less progranulin, which is not a good thing.

Q. How would somebody get involved with this study? A. If you believe that you or a loved one suffers from mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, we would be happy to set up an interview. The treatment period will be around 18 months, and it will take place only in Wichita. A patient must have a caregiver who can come with them to the visits, and participants will be reimbursed at a respectful level to offset any economic hardship. At the beginning, patients can expect a period of testing to ensure they meet the criteria, followed by a series of ratings to measure mental ability, which will be continued through regular evaluations when patients receive the medicine once a month.

Supporting Families, Funding Breakthroughs Alzheimer’s Association Hard at Work in Wichita Community Written by John Huthmacher

“The long goodbye” is how Alzheimer’s disease is often termed by those touched by the heartbreaking condition. But Juliette Bradley, Kansas state director of communications for the Alzheimer’s Association, wants people dealing with the disease and their families to know they are not alone in their journeys. In conjunction with November being designated as both National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Family Caregivers Month, Bradley is reminding those dealing with Alzheimer’s disease of the many free resources available online at alz.org, providing caregivers the tools they need to best care for their loved ones. “The Alzheimer’s Association offers caregiver support tools and online forums where you can virtually talk to other people who are going through similar situations,” Bradley said.

Funding from such events as Wichita Walk to End Alzheimer’s held in Wichita on October 14 and at six other central and Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, attacks western Kansas communities support the many services offered parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language, through the Alzheimer’s Association for patients and their and progresses from mild memory loss to the eventual inability families. The Wichita Walk goal of $200,000 is likely to be met to speak, move, eat and swallow. While similarities certainly exist among Alzheimer’s patients, Bradley emphasized that no cases are with the help of donations accepted through the end of the year at alz.org/cwkswalk. ever the same. And because of these differing circumstances, the Alzheimer’s Association offers caregivers a variety of resources to help their loved ones live with the disease – all free of charge.

Community Support

“We offer support groups in person across central and western Kansas that meet every month,” she said. “Typically, it’s the same people who meet and establish a bond of trust with each other through sharing information that’s similar to someone else in the group. Support groups have become something that many people cannot go without once they’ve started, but they’re not for everyone. That’s why we offer the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline – 800.272.3900. It is there every day, all day and night, because we understand that people need someone to talk with at 2 in morning as well as 2 in the afternoon.”

Brookdale Senior Living was just one of the community sponsors at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Wichita at Naftzger Park. “We’re always there,” said Jennifer Osborn, Brookdale executive director. “Being able to educate the Alzheimer’s community about what services are available to them through the Alzheimer’s Association is near and dear to my heart.”

All Hands On Deck

Because of the outpouring of support received across Kansas, the Alzheimer’s Association continues to celebrate successes in the local community. It is through this support that families facing Alzheimer’s today can look to a brighter future, offering more advanced treatments and longer life spans.

Education services offered through the Alzheimer’s Association extend to patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia, their family members, health professionals and corporate employees. The annual Kansas Education Conference on Dementia offers a full day of education, information and support provided by recognized experts. A first responder training, “Approaching Alzheimer’s,” provides valuable information on how to best help patients dealing with the disease. Advances in research reported at the 2023 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) deliver hope through reported advancements in treatment, early and accurate diagnosis, and identifying and understanding of risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Having established a long and financially supportive relationship with the Alzheimer’s Association, Brookdale remains among the organization’s most generous supporters, participating each year as a Diamond Level sponsor.

Hospice Caregivers Impact Lives of Patients and Families Written by Julie Underwood Burton

Observing its 45th year, National Hospice and Palliative Care Month was established under the presidency of Jimmy Carter to raise awareness of the growing hospice movement, and to recognize the efforts of these caring individuals. Back then, the number of patients receiving hospice and palliative care was still in the thousands. According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, today nearly 1.5 million Americans receive hospice care annually throughout the U.S. Hospice and palliative care professionals are an essential part of our healthcare system, with one of the most emotionally demanding careers. Not only do these providers care for patients who are seriously ill or at the end of their lives, but these professionals, who are often overlooked, also provide much-needed support and care for the families during a time of grief. Both types of care focus on improving the quality of life, but there are distinct differences between hospice versus palliative care, particularly with respect to symptom management, medical treatment, eligibility, the team, goals, locations, payments, availability and emergencies. Care teams can consist of the individual’s medical doctor, nurse, social worker, care coordinator, spiritual care provider, bereavement professional and an array of volunteers. Although hospice and palliative care exists in all 50 states and is a growing industry, many Americans are not aware of the benefits hospice caregivers provide. Raising awareness is also critical in support of these caregivers.

“My staff and I were recently out to lunch when a

woman came to our table. She hugged our nurse and proceeded to tell her how much she loved her, how much she appreciated Phoenix, and that she wouldn’t have had any idea how to care for her husband, or what to do for him without us stepping in. We talked for a few minutes, and the compliments never stopped. After she walked away, the nurse looked at me and said, ‘I only made one visit to his home before he died.’ I was shocked at what an impact a person could have after meeting someone just one time.” — Andrea Barnhart, Phoenix Hospice Director of Nursing, Wichita. Visit phoenixhomehc.com for more information.

“Our experience with Brookdale was powerfully positive from the outset. Because of the strong leadership and staff, my father settled in and found a home. I have been extremely impressed by Brookdale and its staff ever since he made this his home in October 2021. The best way I can describe my feeling about Brookdale is that, for me, it is synonymous with peace of mind.” — Rick Walker, son of a resident of Brookdale East Wichita Brookdale Senior Living caregivers work with hospice to provide the medical, emotional and spiritual support needed. Residents benefit from the extra one-on-one time and the families receive additional support. Visit brookdale.com for more information.

Putting Patients Back in Circulation Written by Julie Underwood Burton

Vein Treatments at Innovative Vein One of the most complicated-sounding medical terms is the term “phlebology,” which is simply the study of veins in the human body, and a phlebologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating vein diseases. Innovative Vein is Wichita’s premier phlebology and medical spa, specializing in the treatment of the most common vein diseases, including varicose veins and spider veins. Other vein conditions treated include facial and hand veins. Not only can these vein diseases affect your appearance, but veins can increase in size as they malfunction, causing serious discomfort and risk for complications such as a blood clot or open sores on the legs. Innovative Vein specializes in performing minimally invasive procedures and offers many treatment options for vein issues experienced by both men and women. Initially, patients receive a free consultation, including an outline of treatment options. Most insurance companies and Medicare provide coverage for medically necessary treatments; other treatment costs vary patient to patient. Many treatments require little downtime or incisions, have minimal side effects, and patients have been consistently satisfied with Innovative Vein’s comprehensive and non-surgical approach to vein treatment.

“When I met Dr. Cheatum at Innovative Vein, he went into great detail about what was happening with my vein. He took the time to answer all my questions with great patience. And I felt relieved that fixing all my issues was just a simple painless procedure done in his office that took less than 15 minutes with no downtime afterward. I started feeling positive effects within a few hours, and the area around my vein was not sore like it had been for 20 years. My swelling and restless leg went completely away. I now have tons of energy, and when sitting, standing or walking, I no longer have pain or swelling. On my first follow-up appointment one week later, I literally cried because this was such a life-changing event.” — Carrie Tiemeyer, patient

Dr. Paul Cheatum received his training at the nation’s leading phlebology organization and passed the first phlebology board examination ever offered, demonstrating his years of expertise and commitment to treating vein disease. Since May 2009, Innovative Vein has treated over 10,000 patients. Fall is a perfect time to begin your vein treatments! Call 316.425.7980 for your free consultation. “I cannot begin to say enough good things about Dr. Cheatum and his staff. In today’s world that is unfortunately dominated by cold and impersonal service, Dr. Cheatum’s group is the absolute exception. They are kind, caring and personable. Dr. Cheatum performed multiple procedures on both of my legs to improve circulation. One leg in particular presented a real challenge for Dr. Cheatum. At all times he explained absolutely everything, and never did I ever feel that he was in a hurry. He was totally caring, and I would recommend him without hesitation. The circulation in both legs has improved greatly. Thank you Dr. Cheatum and staff.” — Van Buchanan, patient 30

TikTok Influencer Reveals her Struggle With Fentanyl Addiction How Center for Change Saved Rosa Rivera-Resto’s Life

During this time, Rivera-Resto viewed her addiction as something she could fix at any time. “I thought, ‘Oh, I can control this. I can quit whenever I want. I can quit by myself.’ But that was really something in my mind justifying that I could keep using.”

Seeking Help Because of her substance abuse and mental health issues, she doesn’t remember what happened, but the police ended up at her house, and a probation officer offered her the option of 30 days in a rehabilitation center or less days in jail. Taking the option to go to rehab, Rivera-Resto learned many valuable skills she still uses today, but eventually relapsed. It was during her relapse that she sought help at Center for Change in Wichita with the help of the center’s physician, Dr. Greg Lakin, and his skilled staff. “Give them the chance because they really care,” said RiveraResto of Center for Chnage. “Like all the people there — Dr. Lakin; my therapist, Tracy; my new therapist now — they really care. At some places you’re just a number, but at Center for Change they care about you as a person. When you feel that care, you feel like, ‘Okay, I’m going to keep pushing because they’re pushing with me.’ They are saving lives.”

Rosa Rivera-Resto Center for Change has not only helped Rosa Rivera-Resto overcome extreme addiction, but empowered her to use her story for the benefit of others. Originally from Puerto Rico, Rivera-Resto moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Wichita 11 years ago to be closer to family and to seek a more calm, tranquil environment due to her bipolar 1 disorder. However, the tragic combination of severe menstrual pain and a family member with prescription Percocet (a powerful combination of oxycodone hydrochloride and acetaminophen prescribed for moderate to severe pain) began Rivera-Resto’s three-year descent into addiction. When the family member realized that Rivera-Resto was taking Percocet pills daily, they ended their prescription for her safety. “At this point, I figured it out for real that I was hooked, because that day I started looking for pills on the street,” Rivera-Resto said.

In her past year of sobriety, she has seen major improvement in her relationships, personal life, professional life and even her mental health and behavior. “Because I feel sober and I feel so good, I want to be better, to do better. That’s something that I wasn’t even thinking of before, and now I’m even using my TikTok channel to talk about it.” Rivera-Resto has become a TikTok influencer, translating English news into Spanish using language that people can understand and relate to. She overcame her initial concerns, and has shared her history with addiction on her channel — and her vulnerability has attracted a loyal following who admire her work even more because of where she started. “Being there behind the camera, there’s somebody who might feel good because of my words, and I can help them get out,” Rivera-Resto said. “Right now, I’m working on being sober every day and working to try to help others, because some people don’t have anyone to push them or tell them how to get help and get out of that hole.” To learn more about Rosa Rivera-Resto’s story, follow her on TikTok at @yaririvera423.

She started buying what she thought were 20 mg pills of Oxycodone, increasing her dosage to the point that she would regularly take between seven and eight 30 mg pills per day. “I really didn’t know at the beginning,” she said, “I thought the Oxycodone was real. Then, with time, I realized, ‘Oh my gosh, they are putting something in these pills,’ but at this point, I was already too deep in it.” NOVEMBER 2023 · splurgemag.com

Creating Culture and Connections Pay It Forward Aside from creating a culture of positivity and acceptance, McIntosh works to further philanthropic efforts in the community. In late autumn, Crave partners with The Lord’s Diner in Wichita to feed and clothe people, and they also boost donations for their blanket and coat drives and contribute to ensure that their Thanksgiving feast is a seasonal success. In the past, they have partnered with the Wichita Children’s Home to assist foster families and offer discounted services to patrons. Last June they held a fundraising event to aid missing and exploited children and proudly raised over $4,000. McIntosh continually looks for ways to partner with the Wichita community and help organizations and individuals in need.

Crave Beauty Academy Written by Julie Hying

The Crave Beauty Academy Wichita Campus promotes a fresh approach to a hands-on environment. Director Kim McIntosh discusses the family feel that is fostered at Crave: “With a focus of inclusivity, our staff and students understand that when we come together, we’re preparing to be problem-solvers and productive teammates to work with each other and our clients. Through our CRAVE core values of Culture, Relationships, Achievement, Values and Education, each person may grow to their full potential and realize their dreams.” They encourage and participate in diversity and equity training for their staff and students through a program offered through Pivot Point International.

Crave Beauty Academy provides a unique, quality learning experience for their students and a great experience for clients as well. The positive environment they work endlessly to promote can be easily felt by those working with the students and staff. Through working, learning, and growing together, they demonstrate a sense of community. All of these aspects coalesce to create an outstanding experience at Crave.

“Our primary focus has to be our culture and creating a sense of support and community.” – Crave Beauty Academy Director Kim McIntosh

‘A Family Feel’ With a staff of 20 teachers and around 150 students each year, creating a sense of value and community must remain a key priority, and it’s what makes Crave Beauty Academy an outstanding school. McIntosh notes, “Our primary focus has to be our culture and creating a sense of support and community.” Each Wednesday morning students and staff assemble for Exsalonce, a time for clinics, discussion and team-building activities. Staff inspire excitement with activities and games. Experts are brought in for color, cutting and style demonstrations. Or students and staff can team up for games like mannequin bowling. Coming together in work and fun activities helps ensure a “family feel” that McIntosh works so diligently to build. Students learn a variety of approaches and have ample opportunities to connect with community members through the services they provide. Through time spent with clients in cosmetology, (haircuts and color enhancements); nail technology (manicures, pedicures, and promoting nail and cuticle health); and esthetics (skin analysis, facial treatments, massage, etc.), those learning the specifics of the industry grow and perfect their skills while building relationships with each other and with the people they help beautify. 34

Redefining Self-Care With

Brandi Warden

Co-Owner, Haus of You

Written by Alexis Evans

Since Haus of You opened in August 2022, owners Brandi Warden, B.S.N, R.N, and partner William C. Simon have seen the demand for their services grow steadily. They have a unique approach to the medspa, and Wichita women are all in. This spa has a simple yet everlasting philosophy: “Beauty is not a physical standard, but a frame of mind.” This mindset is firmly centered in Brandi Warden’s approach to her business. Her number-one goal is to help every person who walks through the doors of Haus of You feel comfortable and proud of their body. Haus of You offers a host of rejuvenating aesthetic treatments which help clients reverse and slow the signs of aging, including fillers and PDO threads, Morpheus8 treatments, hormone replacement pellet therapy, and Pretty Plum vaginal rejuvenation. As Warden and Simon have grown in their business, their passion and drive to deliver a fresh outlook to their clients has also grown.

Q. Would you describe Haus of You as more of a spa or a salon?

A. Haus of You (HY) is a full-service medspa, dedicated to meeting

our client’s confidence needs. We offer a full line of aesthetician and skin care services, laser hair reduction, tattoo removal, Botox, fillers, PDO threads, Biote hormone replacement therapy, as well as our exclusive Pretty Plum treatment.

Q. What is the Pretty Plum treatment? A. Unique to HY, the Pretty Plum is a female rejuvenation

treatment targeting vaginal laxity, dryness, tone and incontinence. Our clients’ results have been amazing, and it’s the only treatment for female incontinence that is FDA cleared. It is truly a game-changer.

Q. Tell me about your approach to client and customer care. A. Our approach is “how do you want to feel today?” No two

clients are the same, and neither are their needs. We take a client-centered approach to wellness and beauty, and tailor our treatments to meet those needs.

Q. What inspires you the most to continue finding ways to help your customers and boost their confidence?

A. My own experience as a customer is what determines my

approach. I have more confidence in my provider when they are listening to what it is I would like to achieve. When I begin each day, look in the mirror and feel good about what I see, my confidence soars! I feel like I can conquer anything. We want to give our clients the same self-assurance.

Q. Have you seen a lot of changes in your business since you opened a year ago?

A. Absolutely. It has certainly evolved and changed with the needs of our clients. We are about to launch weight-loss services at the request of several of our clients.

50

Q. What is your favorite kind of customer experience? A. A happy one, of course! We love to have fun, and our

environment is laid-back and relaxing. We want clients to feel comfortable and enjoy their experience.

Q. If you had the ability to give one of your treatments completely free to every woman in Wichita, what would it be?

A. It would absolutely be the Pretty Plum! Intimacy and sexual

wellness is important to all of us. Things like laxity, dryness and incontinence are passed off as “normal” after having children. But it doesn’t have to be. The Pretty Plum is a game-changer, and confidential consultations are free.

With

Darren McGilbray President of Popeyes ARJH

Written by Amy Palser

Darren McGilbray says there’s nothing better than a meal of Popeyes’ Bone-In Spicy Chicken with Cajun Fries, Buttermilk Biscuits and a strawberry soda to wash it down. McGilbray is president of ARJH, which owns Popeyes restaurants in Kansas and Oklahoma. Five are in Wichita with a new location coming soon. With a lengthy career in the restaurant industry — McGilbray started washing dishes at Pizza Hut in 1980 — the Wichita native knows good food when he sees it, and he’s excited that Popeyes’ catering division can bring delicious, hot food to events both big and small, all for a great price.

Q. We didn’t know that Popeyes caters. What size crowd do you cater to?

A. We love catering events in and around Wichita! We

do everything from office lunches and department meetings to rehearsal dinners and weddings. Big or small, we can do it! We can very easily provide food for 1,000-plus people at a huge event. Church functions, company parties, fundraising galas — Popeyes is good for all of it.

Q. What food items are on your catering menu? A. We’re best known for our crispy-on-the-outside, juicy-

on-the-inside signature Bone-in Chicken, which is a natural at events because everyone loves it. We also have boneless options like Classic and Spicy Tenders and our Blackened Tenders (without breading). We have our Classic and Spicy Chicken Sandwiches; those are extremely popular, and you can get those blackened without the breading as well.

Our nuggets and wings are a great choice for appetizers at a cocktail party or before the main meal is served at a

wedding. And don’t forget the sides: We’ve got coleslaw, Homestyle Mac & Cheese, Mashed Potatoes with Cajun Gravy, Buttermilk Biscuits and our famous Red Beans & Rice. For dessert, your guests’ mouths will be watering over our Cinnamon Apple Pies and our Strawberry Biscuits.

Q. We’re getting hungry! How does someone go about starting a catering order?

A. It’s easy to start an order on the Popeyes app, which

takes you through your choices and makes it very simple. For a customized experience, email catering@arjhmgmt.com and our professional catering staff can help you put together something fantastic for your event. We’ll deliver everything and make sure your event comes off without a hitch. With prices starting at $5 per person, it’s a delicious and economical way to make your guests very happy!

Q. What makes Popeyes food a good choice for an event? A. There’s nothing wrong with the catering dishes people

have at weddings, fundraising galas, etc., but a lot of times you leave that event hungry. You didn’t really get what you wanted, you weren’t really happy with the meal you got, so you end up going to Popeyes on the way home. So I say, why not start with Popeyes? That taste of Cajun that only Popeyes can provide — it just can’t be copied! Your guests will love you for it.

Fiona Palomo as Mary and Milo Manheim as Joseph appear in the live-action family Christmas musical adventure which comes out November 10, 2023.

Upcoming Movies, November 2023 Written by Levi Schwertfeger

As we enter the middle of the beautiful fall season, keep your eyes on the theaters for these great movies that will be out this month! Sweater weather and popcorn go hand in hand.

The Marvels November 10, 2023, (PG-13), directed by Nia DaCosta It is time for Captain Marvel’s newest adventure on the big screen. Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) finally got back what she had lost from the Kree — but the wellknown butterfly effect is true, even in the Marvel universe, as she now has to face the unintended consequences of her actions. These consequences come in the form of a universe that has lost its stability, and in an effort to fix it, she finds her powers entangled with Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Together they must work in cooperation to save their universe.

Journey to Bethlehem November 10, 2023, (PG), directed by Adam Anders A possible new Christmas movie tradition to cue up before or after “Elf” may be here. “Journey to Bethlehem” is the newest telling of the miraculous story loved by many, the birth of Jesus of Nazareth The catch is ... it’s a musical! With the classic characters of the original story such as Mary, Joseph and the jealous King Herod, fused with modern pop vocals and songs, the story unfurls in a totally unique and exciting way for all viewers. 58

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes November 17, 2023, (PG-13), directed by Francis Lawrence

The beloved “Hunger Games” series is finally back with a new installation. This prequel to the original movies with Katniss Everdeen takes place years prior, when Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is only 18 years old. We knew him as the manipulative and evil president of Panem, but this movie will give us a look into what may have turned him into that man we grew to despise. Watch as he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) for the 10th annual Hunger Games.

Napoleon November 22, 2023, (R), directed by Ridley Scott The French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (Joaquin Phoenix) has his story told in theaters, allowing us to dive into the rise and fall of his status and nation. We will see Napoleon’s struggle and fighting spirit dealing with his true love Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), as well as his tactical and political intellect when battling his enemies.

EAGLE SCOUTS IN ACTION Eagle Scout Dane Laughlin

Today, Laughlin works with technology like augmented and virtual reality, digital twins, and generative AI, helping to quickly teach people new skills and improve onboarding processes. He views Boy Scouts as an integral leadership experience that built in him a robustness to “address challenges and not get really upset or disappointed when things didn’t work out,” and he believes Scouting has provided the foundation for his career.

It’s no surprise that Dane Laughlin, director of advanced learning capabilities at Invista, a subsidiary Class of 2009 of Koch industries, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13. From the very beginning, he saw the Scouting process as a unique opportunity to build relationships and skills while overcoming difficult situations.

“It’s like anything else: you get what you put in,” Laughlin said. “If I was going to encourage somebody who was going into Boy Scouts right now, I would let them know the Scouts exist to provide resources for people to learn and excel. Take advantage of all the resources that are provided to the fullest extent, because it can get you a long way.”

“Boy Scouts was the foundation for me in learning how to learn,” Laughlin said. “You go to college, you go to high school, and what they’re teaching you is how to learn — but from a practical life skills perspective I learned much more in Boy Scouts on how to interact with people in stressful environments and deal with not being prepared.”

Quivira Council and Morgan Stanley are proud to bring you Eagle Scouts in Action, a monthly showcase of community leaders who are banding together to make a difference in our community! If you are interested in joining Scouting or have an Eagle Scout in Action you think deserves honoring, call us at 316.264.3386.

In Wichita’s Troop 420, Laughlin demonstrated a resourceful and adaptable attitude when he left for a camping trip without tent poles. Knowing he still had to sleep in the poleless tent, he set the tent up under a tree, tying it to different tree limbs to create a functioning tent. “You know, that’s an example of not having the ideal situation but making the best of it and doing something that works, and I think that’s a really valuable skill set for dealing with adversity in day-to-day life,” he said.

72-Year-Old Wichita Chorus Weaves Intricate Harmonies Written by Paige Feikert

For more than seven decades, the Wichita Chorus Sweet Adelines has perfected the harmonies of barbershop singing in Wichita, and this winter you have the chance to experience them yourself. “Barbershop has been around Wichita for many, many years, and is a real legacy in Wichita,” said Wichita Chorus member Rachel Newell. The Sweet Adelines is an international organization, and the Wichita chapter is one of the first three choruses formed in the entire organization. Not only does the group have a longstanding history with Sweet Adelines International, at 72 years old the chorus is one of the oldest women’s musical organizations in the state of Kansas. The group performs barbershop — four-part harmony sung a cappella — an art form that’s been heard around Wichita for decades. “The barbershop art form is so unique,” Newell said. “We rely on our ears to create a unit sound that communicates the meaning of each song. When people come, they’re often amazed at the sound that is produced by a cappella singing.”

The show also includes moments and memories of past holidays that chorus members will share with the audience. “This holiday season can mean so many different things to people. It can bring back memories that we’ve lost, memories of family time together, special traditions and more. The focus of the show is really about what the holidays mean to you,” Williams said. The show is not only a chance to connect with local barbershop greatness, it’s also an experience unlike any other. “The drama and the energy that we put into each one of those arrangements is amazing,” Newell said. “Every singer has a role to play in four-part harmony that brings out the lush melodies from each amazing song. It’s just so unique.”

The group has earned honors internationally and locally, performing at regional and international competitions through Sweet Adelines. Most recently, the Wichita Chorus took home first place for a small chorus and third place overall in their spring regional competition, where the Wichita Chorus competed against groups across seven states. The Wichita Chorus Sweet Adelines is sharing its award-winning sound with Wichita this winter with a festive holiday concert titled “That’s Christmas to Me,” a performance master director Melynnie Williams says will include something for everyone. “The wonderful thing about a cappella is we sing all different genres of music in the barbershop art form. In our Christmas show, we’re going to perform contemporary songs, holiday songs, and also sacred songs. That’s the amazing thing about a cappella music — songs are written in different genres that speak to people of all different ages,” Williams said. “We’ll sing songs that all generations love.” The chorus will perform two shows on Dec. 16 at MorningStar Church near Kellogg and Greenwich, including a matinee at 2:30 p.m., and a longer performance at 7 p.m. The show will include the group’s competition package — the songs it will perform at the regional competition in the spring — as well as a variety of holiday classics. 62

Instruments of Hope Written by Caroline Jones

whole ability of our organization to actually execute and perform on the programs we want to do.” Truster was absolutely overwhelmed by the impact of that support at MYP’s Jazz for a Cause event in April earlier this year. “I was able to attend the dinner with about 200 to 225 other people (we filled out the entire room at Prairie Hill Vineyard) and I knew that all of those people cared about Music Youth Partnership,” he said. “That was the most fulfilling part. It was a vote of confidence to see 200 or so people in person who cared about our organization, and to know we had their support and that they were interested in where we are going.”

Music and Mentors Lift Middle-Schoolers Music Youth Partnership is on the move, breaking down barriers to music education in Wichita public schools. Recently, MYP had their first major instrument donation to local Wichita classrooms, dropping off 23 instruments at middle schools across USD 259. “The teachers were so profoundly impacted by the fact that we were just bringing in these instruments for their kids,” said treasurer, Becker Truster. “They have had kids who want to be involved in band and can’t, and we just made their lives so much easier, and they were so thankful for it.”

Along with the rest of the MYP team, Truster looks forward to the backing of the Wichita business community and the city as a whole at the Gifts of Music Gala, Music Youth Partnership’s semi-formal event on December 10, 2023. The gala will begin at 5 p.m. in the beautiful Petroleum Club on the top floor of the Ruffin building. Guests will enjoy a full dinner with entertainment from the Friends University Flute Choir and from Groove 42, an accomplished headliner band who will feature horn players from the schools that Music Youth Partnership supports.

This unique organization, through its mission of music, hopes to see increased graduation rates, reduced risk behaviors, and academic growth in the middle and high school music students they serve, helping them become well-rounded individuals with strong character. “I don’t think we really do music, or at least music is not the aim of what we do. Music is wonderful, right, but we’re really interested in the character development of the underprivileged kids that we’re serving. Music is just a tool for that,” Truster said. In addition to providing instruments for at-risk youth, MYP also brings high-quality musical mentors into the classroom to work in small groups on musical achievement, weaving character development into their curriculum. MYP’s extraordinary ability to reach the needs of these students and teachers comes from the generosity of Wichita businesses. Truster revealed the impact of small businesses that have supported them through significant donations of both money and items for silent auctions, banks that have assisted with donations, and Damm Music’s generosity in reduced-cost instrument repair and the use of their facilities as a community location for instrument donation. Wichita’s support of this exceptional nonprofit all stems from the generous gift of an anonymous local businesswoman in MYP’s early days. “She said, ‘This is your seed money. I’m going to start your organization. Use this and run with it.’ That seed money has been the 64

A Place to Gather

Thanksgiving Tablescapes

Entertaining season is upon us and I don’t know about you, but, like myself, did you find yourself getting a little lax in entertaining and setting your tableware after 2020? While we all stayed away and strayed away from our formal customs in 2020, friends, we are three years post and it is time to come back. Fall decor is storming in with beautiful soft warm neutrals, lots of layers and textures. Whether you elect to go formal with your place settings or stay simple, we thought it would be fun to share some inspiration. We’ve also included our top five must-have pieces you want in order to serve a well-set table. So, take a peek, be inspired and feel free to create something that will be your signature look.

One Fine Picnic

Top 6 Must-Have Items for a Well-Set Table 1. Fresh flowers - Find a way to bring the outdoors inside with a full centerpiece showcasing all the fall colors or a simple sprig or pinecone placed within your setting. 2. Colorful or fun linens - Making sure you have linens is a must, but make it fun by adding a complementary color, or even something with custom words, sayings or embroidered names.

According to NBC, this is the place setting used at the reception for Prince William and Princess Kate. While you may not be serving royalty or hosting at the palace, I thought it would be fun to share this diagram reminding us that everything indeed has a place. Now, of course, like any setting you can adjust any of these items on an as-needed basis depending on your menu. Last month I came across this beautiful fall place setting (top right) by our friends at One Fine Picnic. Owners Brooke and Annell have creative, fun ways to set the mood when working with clients. They enjoyed creating this warm setting by mixing textures, layers and warm colors. Adding details can pull that look together; here you see they added simple touches of pampas grass and pinecones. A few other ideas would be to add a small sprig of wheat or a fall flower stem to pull the whole place setting together. 72

3. Statement dish for dessert or appetizers - Make certain to start and finish your dinner with a statement. Serving the appetizer or dessert on a custom, vintage or vibrant dish can get the conversations started and keep them going. 4. Unique flatware and drinkware - Why not impress your guests with some fun personality in these pieces? 5. Big boards - We all love our charcuterie, and equally love breads, so why not present one or both of these on a statement board? 6. Fun drinkware - I love sipping my bubbly water and wine from vintage wine glasses or goblets. I just purchased some from a thrift store this summer and I cannot wait to pair these with my settings.

The immersive program exposed William and other middle school students from around the country to the various STEM fields. They worked on a mock mission to Mars, and along the way they learned how STEM fields collaborate to solve real-world problems – such as exploring the red planet – through hands-on simulations, workshops and competitions. They learned from NASA astronaut and chemical engineer Leroy Chiao, who flew on three Space Shuttle flights and was the commander of Expedition 10. William’s mother, Amber, said her son “gained confidence, leadership skills and independence, and had an invaluable experience participating in the NYLF Explore STEM program.” NYLF programs are designed to introduce select students from across the country to different career programs and help them find their passion through experiential learning activities in forensic science, robotics programming and design, civil engineering, and medicine. According to Envision WorldStrides, “This program is a unique learning experience for bright, forward-thinking middle school students who will evolve into our next generation of innovators, engineers, doctors, forensic scientists, mathematicians and physicists.

An Out-Of-This World, Mission-to-Mars Learning Experience Written by Julie Underwood Burton

A 13-year-old Clearwater seventh-grader took a mission to Mars – albeit a mock visit – and learned from a seasoned astronaut during a prestigious STEM camp this summer. William Dejmal spent six days at the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) Explore STEM program at University of Denver after being nominated by his advanced math teacher, Christy Swafford, at Clearwater Intermediate-Middle School.

Virtually all career fields today require a solid foundation of STEM. It is the fastest growing area of study, and STEM professionals are in the highest demand throughout the world. William is excited for his potential future in the STEM field, and his mom adds that he’s “very thankful for teachers who support his education, and his sponsors who helped fund this amazing experience.”
