Putting Our Best Faces Forward
What is it about faces that make them so magnetic? All day long we look at faces — faces of family members, coworkers, classmates — and somehow we never grow tired of looking at new ones. Science shows that the human brain is highly specialized in recognizing and processing faces, with a natural inclination to identify and remember them. Faces tend to stand out in our visual environment due to their unique configuration of features — two eyes, a nose and a mouth arranged in a specific pattern that indicate expressions and emotion. And looking at faces is a fundamental part of social bonding and affiliation.
So maybe it’s science that prompts us here at SPLURGE! Magazine to put a heavy emphasis on faces. But a more likely reason is that we believe people are important, and local people are especially important to building a strong community. That’s why we attend events across the city and showcase guests at these events. Our Photo Ambassador, Michael Carroll Jr., takes hundreds if not thousands of photos each month, and we devote many pages of the magazine to those photos. Historically, SPLURGE’S Local Faces pages are one of readers’ favorite parts of the magazine.
One of those readers is Jim Woods, pictured at right. The 54-year-old Wichita man with special needs loves reading SPLURGE! and is a huge fan of Local Faces, according to his sister, Tammy Vicin, with whom he lives in west Wichita. She said Jim spends hours looking at the faces in Splurge, and she always picks up multiple copies of the magazine to keep in the car and at home – and just in case his many, many trips through the magazine leave a copy tattered and torn.

We love people too. It’s at the heart of what we do. So we’re happy to bring you this June issue where even the cover is filled with multiple faces. Sure, we like animals and plants and buildings and cars and all the other things that make up a community. But people are for sure the best part, and we’re happy to champion them and bring them to you each month.

will provide shuttles to and from the course from all VIP parking lots. VIP parking can be purchased online for $35 per day or 3 days for $90 by visiting wichitaopen.com. General parking for the Beechcraft parking lot can be purchased online for $6 per day in advance, or the day of for $10.
Another noticeable change is the new Scheels Event Center, which will not only hold events prior to the tournament, but also house the volunteers. The tent will be relocated to just outside the Crestview clubhouse and next to the Fan Zone, and volunteers will be happy to hear that air conditioning is being added to the space. The tent is capable of seating 300 people and will be the central hub for all events starting June 4 with the volunteer appreciation event.
Attendees will notice a new Hatchett Devlin Auto Group Welcome Center at the entrance. All tickets will be scanned, and wristbands will be issued there, instead of at different venues as in the past. This is a major change in having a centralized point for entry, and every guest must now start at the Welcome Center before proceeding to their hospitality areas.
A new tournament director isn’t all that’s new about this year’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open at Crestview Country Club to benefit KU Wichita Pediatrics.
“Coming to the tournament, you’re going to notice a distinct difference basically everywhere you turn,” said Dusty Buell, who replaced Roy Turner at the tournament’s helm.
The Wichita Open, one of the longest running events on the Korn Ferry Tour going into its 33rd year, is a PGA-sanctioned event featuring 156 players from around the world battling for a total purse of $1 million. The actual tournament runs from Thursday, June 15 through Championship Sunday on June 18, although preliminary events start June 8 with the Credit Union of America’s annual Children’s Miracle Network Golf Classic.
Buell has nothing but praise for his predecessor, Turner, calling him a “giant.” But he’s eager to keep the event moving forward with the help of corporate sponsors, volunteers, fans, players, and Turner himself, who’s sticking around until the end of June to help with the transition.
One new feature is the Wichita Open Fan Zone, presented by IWP Foundation Repair, featuring complimentary soda, water and Anheuser Busch products, a bar and shaded upper deck to watch the tournament from and more. The Fan Zone pass can be purchased for $30 and includes access to the rest of the course except for hospitality chalets. As the Fan Zone’s beer selection indicates, the tournament has also changed its premier beer sponsor, from Coors Light and Miller Light to Michelob Ultra being the official beer of the tournament, distributed by the House of Schwann.
The tournament has added additional VIP parking with a lot at Life Church, south of Crestview at 338 N. 127th St. E. Hatchett Automotive
In what Buell calls a “monster change,” the hospitality chalets will be housed in structures new to Wichita. The tournament is now contracting with the same company that supplies the structures to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, a PGA tour event that — like the Wichita Open — has a reputation for a relaxed, fun-loving atmosphere that’s earned it the nickname “The Greatest Show on Grass.”
“We’re just kind of a smaller version of that,” Buell said. “You’re going to have the same experience here in Wichita as you would in Phoenix, in terms of these identical structures.”
The Open’s double-decker hospitality chalets sold out in December. Some individual tickets were still being sold in May for $100 a day, although Friday and Saturday are already nearing a sell-out. The tournament’s final piece — its players — won’t be known until closer to the event. The Wichita Open takes place a week after Korn Ferry Tour players are “reshuffled” up or down the system of tours

according to their performance. “We had 12 guys qualify for the U.S. Open last year that we thought were coming here,” Buell said, adding: “That being said, the Korn Ferry Tour has had some pretty awesome champions this year. I’ve never been more excited about a group coming to Wichita!”
In addition to the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, other related events include:
• Auggie Navarro Pro-Am Invitational, June 11
• Select Pro-Am, and Wesley Kids Tee-Off Against Cancer, June 12
• Advanced Orthopedic Associates Children’s Adaptive Golf Clinic, Wichita State Golf Tournament, and Spirit Aerosystems Pro-Am Pairings Party, June 13
• Spirit Aerosystems Pro-Am, June 14
• Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Women’s Leadership Breakfast, June 15 Tickets and more information about the Wichita Open and these events can be found at wichitaopen.com. General admission tickets to the Wichita Open remain $10 per day. Last year’s Wichita Open attracted some 52,000 spectators and raised $290,000 for local charities. Buell hopes to increase both those.
“We’re going to continue to grow and put Wichita in the best light,” he said. “I think people are really going to be surprised, and it will give them one more reason to exude pride in our community.”
Ambassadors Give Tournament a Boost
Written by SPLURGE! Staff
50-Plus Wichita Companies Play Crucial Role in Wichita Open’s Success
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Wichita Open has a few distinctions that make it unique among PGA-sanctioned events: It’s one of only four original Korn Ferry Tour events still in swing today. Its legendary 17th green is home to VIP chalets and a festive atmosphere with up to 4,000 fans daily.
It’s one of Wichita’s biggest sporting events drawing over 50,000 spectators during tournament week. It generates an estimated $7.2 million in economic impact in Wichita and the surrounding area.
But one of the most remarkable features is its synergistic Ambassador program, where local companies support the Wichita Open while the Wichita Open supports them back. Limited to about 50 companies, the Ambassadors meet year-round for activities and networking opportunities like breakfast and happy hour events, as well as golfing and leadership gatherings.
“If it wasn’t for these Ambassadors and their love of this community, we would not have this golf tournament in Wichita today,” said tournament director Dusty Buell. “They play a crucial role in everything that we do. Every single person in that group wants to see us raise even more money for local charities while showcasing Wichita on a big stage.”
While Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is this year’s title sponsor, the Ambassadors also receive name recognition at tournament events and receive VIP access at the Wichita Open, which runs June 8–18 this year.

When to Start Social Security
Choosing when to start taking your Social Security benefit can be one of the most important decisions you make when thinking about retirement. For most retirees, Social Security is a significant source of their income. In fact, according to a recent report from the National Institute on Retirement Security, Social Security is the sole source of income for 40 percent of older Americans. If you make the wrong decision on when to start your Social Security, it could seriously reduce your standard of living, especially in the latter years of your retirement. So, when should you start taking your Social Security? Great question.
DON’T STA RT TOO S OON
It is common for people to be tempted to start receiving Social Security as soon as they possibly can. Sometimes, people draw their Social Security early out of fear that the Social Security program will go away or will be diminished in the future. After all, the Social Security Administration acknowledges that the Social Security trust funds will be depleted by 2035 unless Congress makes changes to the Social Security program. If the trust funds are depleted, the Social Security Administration will only be able to pay about 80 percent of your Social Security benefit, according to the government website ssa.gov/thereforme.
If your full retirement age is 67 and you start drawing Social Security benefits at age 62, you will get a 30 percent reduction in benefits. That is a significant reduction in retirement income, so make sure you do proper planning to ensure you will have enough income throughout your retirement, and don’t let fear cause you to draw your Social Security too early.
DON’T START TOO LAT E
You can maximize your Social Security benefit by delaying it until after your full retirement age. In fact, if you do, your benefit will increase 8 percent per year up to age 70. So, if your full retirement age is 67 and you delay starting your Social Security until age 70, you will get a 24 percent larger Social Security benefit. Delaying your Social Security benefit can give you considerably more income in retirement. And, since Social Security has cost-of-living adjustments to help keep up with inflation, it is an important component of your overall retirement income strategy.
So, what is the best age to start your Social Security benefit? It depends on your individual circumstances. One of the best ways to make this decision is to do a comprehensive financial plan that takes into account all of your sources of retirement income, including any income from pensions and income derived from your investment portfolio. In some cases, it will not significantly improve the probability of a successful plan to delay your Social Security benefits. Focus on maximizing the value of your estate rather than maximizing the size of your Social Security benefit. Waiting until age 70 is not right for everyone.
BOTTOM LINE
It is possible to jeopardize your future standard of living by starting your Social Security benefit too soon. It is also possible to unnecessarily deplete your nest egg by starting your Social Security too late. Choosing the optimal time to start your Social Security benefit is very specific to your individual situation and circumstances. There is no cookie-cutter answer to this question. Work with a qualified financial planner to prepare a comprehensive financial plan based on your unique circumstances. Only then will you know the right time for you to draw your Social Security benefits and maximize your retirement income.

Is There a Better Shingles Vaccine?
Written by SPLURGE! Staff
Researchers Looking for Solution to Long-Term Nerve Damage From Virus
While pain, discomfort, and scarring are all concerns for patients with shingles, it is the long-term and permanent effects of nerve pain that have researchers looking for a better vaccine to prevent the virus. The complication that causes nerve pain – called postherpetic neuralgia — happens when nerve fibers get damaged during an outbreak of shingles. Messages from the skin to the brain become confused, resulting in chronic pain that can last months or years.
“This postherpetic neuralgia is the real reason the vaccine was developed,” said Dr. Terry Klein, a partner at Alliance for Multispecialty Research. “Multiple companies are working to bring a shingles vaccine to market that has improved effectiveness, reduced cost and improved tolerance.”
AMR is comparing multiple new vaccines to the existing shingles vaccine to determine the tolerance and effectiveness of the new versions. Klein said the new vaccines are in Phase 3 and have been tolerated well in earlier phases. “The cells that are needing to be developed in response to the vaccine are being developed in a robust fashion,” he said.
About one in three people in the U.S. will develop shingles in their lifetime. Herpes zoster, the virus that creates shingles in adults, is the same virus that creates chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant in the body, but can be triggered into becoming active. “At such point when our immune system is down or stress is high, or some reason we don’t know, it shows itself as shingles,” Klein said.
While about 90 percent of eligible individuals are vaccinated for chickenpox, Klein said, a high percentage of adults still get shingles. The shingles vaccine works by supporting the immune system’s ability to suppress the virus. “We have a vaccine present on the market that is already doing that work, and it’s a good vaccine,” Klein said. “But the work being done is to make the vaccine a little more potent for a better response in the body and have it tolerated a little better.”
AMR is looking for healthy individuals ages 50 and up. Participants will either receive the existing vaccine or a new vaccine; there is no placebo. Participants will be compensated. For more information on the shingles vaccine study, call AMR Wichita West at 316.462.0420, or AMR El Dorado at 316.600.5127.
What is Shingles?
Shingles is a painful rash that develops on one side of the face or body. People often have pain, itching or tingling in the area where the rash will develop a few days before the rash appears.
Other symptoms that accompany the rash are fever, headache, chills and upset stomach. The rash consists of blisters that typically scab over in 7 to 10 days and fully clears up within 2 to 4 weeks.
Usually, the rash occurs in a single stripe around either the left or right side of the body. It’s also common to have the rash on one side of the face, and that can affect the eye and cause temporary vision loss. In some extreme cases, it can affect the cornea or the back of the eye and damage the eye, causing lasting vision impairment.
Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common complication of shingles and causes burning pain in the skin and nerves. The pain lasts long after the shingles rash and blisters disappear. Pain may feel burning, sharp and jabbing, or deep and aching. Often those with postherpetic neuralgia can’t handle light touch on the affected area, even from clothing. Patients can also have an itchy feeling or numbness.

Longtime Starkey Volunteer Honored
New Building Named for ‘Good Friend, Invaluable Fundraiser’ Myra Devlin
Written by Julie Underwood Burton
Volunteers across Wichita are vital to our non-profit organizations, frequently filling gaps in programs and services, and they are often the backbone of many charities.
Myra Devlin, a longtime volunteer at Starkey, Inc., is one Wichitan who has certainly made an impact touching many lives throughout the community for the past 40 years. After moving here from Ohio, Devlin became close acquaintances with a friend whose child was in Starkey’s programs. She felt her calling to become involved and has been rolling up her sleeves at Starkey ever since 1983.
“Starkey truly touched Myra’s heart, and ever since she has worked tirelessly as a concerned member of our community, as a good friend and invaluable fundraiser for our organization,” said Starkey CEO Colin McKenney.
Devlin served for three decades on the Starkey Action Council, a coalition of local fundraising women, and as the co-chair of Starkey’s Saving Lives Capital Campaign for the $4 million program building that was completed in 2021 and named in her honor. “The Myra D. Devlin Center acknowledges and honors the countless volunteer hours and contributions Myra has made to Starkey. Naming the building after Myra is an honor and a natural fit for her steadfast support through the years,” adds McKenney. Recently dedicated, the center houses two of Starkey’s day programs called the Life Enrichment Program and the Gateway Program. Devlin continues to serve on the Starkey Foundation Board of Directors.
Founded in 1930, Starkey is the oldest community-based nonprofit in Sedgwick County helping those with intellectual disabilities work, live more independently and engage more fully in the community.
Starkey provides 37 group homes and two apartment complexes in Wichita, and services are provided 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Starkey serves people who can live independently with basic support such as medication monitoring and bill paying, and helps people who need CNA-level personal care, which involves a wide variety of support. Starkey currently serves 475 people through employment, life enrichment, behavior support and residential programs, and employs a staff of 380.
A common community misconception today is that Starkey is a school primarily serving children. The question, “How are the kids doing at Starkey?” is still frequently asked. Starkey’s humble origins began in the 1930s when Hattie Starkey and her husband, Ray, opened their first home and continued to move to larger homes to hold school for children with disabilities — eventually accommodating as many as 40 children in a basement classroom. Families even took out second mortgages in the early 1950s, something unheard of in those days, to help finance the construction of a six-classroom school building. The school opened in 1952, accommodating more than 70 students, and was later incorporated in 1955 as a non-profit school called the Starkey School for Retarded Citizens, Inc.
Through the years, significant changes took place as laws changed for disabled populations. In the 1970s, several landmark national laws impacted services for individuals with developmental disabilities, and Wichita Public Schools started offering classes for special-needs children. Today, the focus and mission at Starkey, Inc. is to help adults with disabilities, ages 18 through 80, through business, employment, residential, life enrichment, and case management programs.
Starkey depends on the Wichita community to assist with financial support, and hosts fundraising events throughout the year. Currently, their greatest need is help with funding the construction of three new fully accessible homes, in addition to supporting their transportation fleet of 100 vehicles, which they own and maintain.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

Three Generations of Oncologists Devoted to Patients
It’s a rare thing when cancer touches a family in a positive way. Even rarer, it is virtually unheard of that one family would produce three generations of doctors who devoted their lives to finding ways to beat the dreaded disease.
Yet such is the case in the Moore family of Wichita, where Dennis Sr., Dennis Jr., and son Joe, are the only known oncologists in the U.S. with three generations of service between them. Oncology specialty records kept since the U.S. oncology board was created in 1970 confirm this unique distinction among their colleagues.
The influence of Dennis Sr., who passed away in 2015 at age 79, lives on in his son and grandson. The father-son team carries on his legacy at the Cancer Center of Kansas, where Dennis Sr. worked for much of his career. His memory and bedside manner continue to impact their daily routines.
“Dad was a huge influence,” Dennis Jr. said. “I admired him a lot. I just found what he did extremely interesting.
“Even as a kid, I would look at his medical books and blood slides and help him out with the leukemia society telethons, where I got to know some of the pediatric patients my age. Professionally, we were around for a lot of the original test trials for certain diseases, and I consulted him whenever there were particularly difficult cases no one else could figure out. Now my son and I talk every day and run cases by one another. That’s been a really fun and gratifying part of being from a family of oncologists.”
For Joe, it was ongoing conversations around the dinner table pertaining to cancer cases between his grandfather, father, and uncle (an infectious disease doctor) that piqued his interest in medicine at an early age. Like his father, he never felt pressured into following the family patriarchs into the medical field. Rather, his decision to pursue a career in oncology was motivated solely by his desire to be of service to those struggling with life-anddeath scenarios.
“My parents just wanted us kids to do whatever we wanted,” he said. “Whatever we were interested in, they fully supported us. Of the seven kids, five of us aren’t physicians (his younger brother, Matt, is a gastroenterologist), so there was no pressure to go into medicine.
“As an oncologist, I am able to provide a meaningful difference. Most of our patients are in dire need of help, and being able to help get them through their cancer journey from diagnosis to treatment is really meaningful to me. Seeing that in my dad and grandpa was certainly inspirational for how I want to model being a physician.”
Having practiced in Wichita for decades, the Moore’s patient lists are oft-times chock full of familiar surnames. It’s a connection Dennis Jr. particularly relishes, one that binds his family’s unbroken length of service to those entrusted to their care.
“It’s always fun to meet the next generation,” he said. “Patients love meeting Joe when he’s covering for me in my absence or seeing a family member of someone I treated in the past. They are always pleased that he’s so knowledgeable and kind.”
Dennis Jr. believes that the family’s shared participation in Boy Scouts of America activities as young men played a significant role in preparing them for their roles as physicians. All four Moore family doctors ascended to the rank of Eagle Scout, a testament to their commitment to completing the task at hand.
Though the three oncologists shared a mutual commitment to fighting cancer, their individual outlets for dealing with the stressors of the job varied considerably. For Dennis Sr., his chosen retreat was performing on piano. For Dennis Jr., the outdoors, running and learning languages serve to soothe his soul. For Joe, it is golf that offers solace through the ongoing turbulence of dealing with life-ordeath decisions at every turn.
“It’s important to have a wide range of interests to balance out your work life and make you a well-rounded person,” Dennis Jr. said. “Intellectually and emotionally, it’s a difficult job.”
Differing hobbies aside, it was always a shared love of family and the human race that drove their collective commitment to eradicate cancer through treatment and research.

“It’s a shared interest, a shared passion,” Dennis Jr. said. “Patients can tell whether or not their doctor cares about what they are going through and listens to them. That’s something for sure that my dad, son and I all share.”
Whether that shared family passion for medicine extends to yet another generation through Joe’s children, ages 7 and 3, is anyone’s guess. What is clear is that they can expect their parents to support their dreams, whatever they may be.
“I want my kids to be the best at whatever they want to be,” he said. “If that’s medicine, I’ll fully support it, but whatever else they want to do, I will support them 100 percent.”
As for Joe, he can’t imagine having chosen anything but a career in oncology. To him, it is where he belongs, a gift beyond measure passed on through family genes and support.
“Being an oncologist, we have the privilege of seeing patients in their most vulnerable state,” Joe said. “When a patient comes into our office, oftentimes it is the worst day of their life. We’re trying to help them through their difficult situation and hopefully to a good outcome.
“This profession constantly reminds me how fortunate I am, not only to be able to provide care, but also to be healthy and to have the life I have. In oncology, you can’t take any day for granted. Every day is special. That’s the outlook it has given me.”

Hair Loss? We’ve Got You Covered
More than 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States struggle with pattern hair loss. It’s very common and can start early in the teenage years. By age 50, more than 50 percent of men and women will notice some hair loss.
In all cases, hair loss won’t improve without some intervention. We offer treatment options, including robotic hair restoration and injectable PRP. When you come for your consultation, we work together to decide what’s right for you.
Hair by Robotics
We’ve partnered with Hair by Robotics to offer you ARTAS robotassisted hair transplantation. This unique hair replacement uses cutting-edge technology to provide natural-looking results without complications, scarring or discomfort and no invasive surgical or stitching techniques.
• First, intelligent algorithms select the best individual hairs for precision harvesting with robotic follicular unit extraction (FUE).
• Second, the robotic system methodically removes donor hairs, giving you consistent graft quality. The robot doesn’t get tired, so your grafts are equally precise.
• Finally, the grafts are harvested, and our highly trained staff places them. You’re ready to go out again in a few days, and you’ll soon notice new hairs on your head.
Hair Restoration with PRP
Using this non-surgical option, we inject PRP into the scalp to stimulate stem cell growth and naturally extend your hair growth cycle. In just 30 minutes, we can stimulate hair regrowth without surgery or downtime. This usually involves a series of three treatments one month apart, and many patients notice results in a short period of time.
Real Patients. Real Results.
Our robotic hair transplant patient says no one wants to look older, and he feels like he looks younger with more hair. He is glad he attended to his hair loss sooner instead of waiting for it to worsen.
Explain your hair transplant journey.
Hair transplant patient: I never paid much attention to my hair until I learned about Hair by Robotics, and they suggested I try it. Now I am so glad I did. After my first treatment, I had two more to help fill in my hairline. The results were so good that I started noticing men’s hairlines everywhere. It’s like when you buy a car and start noticing everyone is driving one! After that, I realized I wanted to fill in more of my hairline, so I returned for some touch-ups.
How did the transplant feel?
Hair transplant patient: It’s a medical procedure using a local anesthetic, so I didn’t feel much. It’s pretty much non-invasive. The only slightly uncomfortable part is when they numb you.
How did you feel after?
Hair transplant patient: I was a little sore with minor swelling. I did have to sleep sitting up in a chair for a few days, so I didn’t roll on the transplant and donor areas. And I couldn’t touch the area for about a week, so I didn’t disturb the grafts.
When did you notice your results?
Hair transplant patient: First, you notice baby hair, and at about three months I was excited to notice I was getting extra hair. Between six and eight months, I started seeing lots of hair, it was getting darker, and the volume was increasing. So, you do have to be patient, but that’s OK because the results are so good.
Do you have advice for people considering a hair transplant? Hair transplant patient: Do it, and you won’t regret it. I am so happy with my results. Do it sooner rather than later. The sooner you do it, the more of your existing hair you get to keep. If you wait, your donor areas shrink. Don’t be afraid to do it. Men lose hair as they get older, and you’d be surprised how many men have had a hair transplant treatment. It’s an excellent investment, and you’ll love your results.
Our goal is to help patients suffering from hair loss and thinning hair. Hair loss often results in a loss of self-esteem and overall well-being. With a broad spectrum of options, we strive to help our patients feel more confident with a fuller, thicker head of hair. Ready to explore your options? Contact Hair by Robotics at 1-844-HAIR-BYROBO or PSC at 316.688.7500 to learn more!
Plastic surgery involves many choices; the most important is selecting a surgeon you can trust. Expect exceptional results when you have your procedures performed by plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, like Dr. Sprole, Dr. Biskup, and Dr. Spaniol. These specially trained doctors have at least six years of surgical training and experience, with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery.

Pain Pills Took Postmaster Down Dangerous Road
Center for Change Helped Kansas Woman Find New Life
got pregnant with her son and decided to stop. It was years before she would use again.
But a new addiction was born when a woman who worked at Kady’s kids’ school gave her a hydrocodone pill when Kady complained of pain she was having. She discovered there were quite a few women at the school who were using pain pills, and she quickly learned why. “I liked the way it made me feel. It gives you energy and you can get everything done in one day,” she said.
Kady Vail feared what would happen if she got off pain pills. She wanted to kick the $600-a-week habit. She didn’t want to be a slave to drugs anymore. But she was scared of the withdrawal symptoms. She knew what they were like, and she didn’t think she could handle it.
Many others have been in Kady’s shoes, fearing the physical and mental effects that come with discontinuing pain pill use. Withdrawal symptoms can be intense: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, muscle aches, sweating, restlessness, depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, weakness, fatigue, heightened sensitivity to pain — the list goes on. And symptoms can last for weeks or even months.
So Kady, who lives in Pratt, was thrilled when she found a solution to kicking the habit without the extreme side effects. Seven years ago she had just moved to Kansas and Googled “doctors who prescribe Suboxone.” She found Dr. Greg Lakin of Center for Change in Wichita.
Suboxone is a prescription drug that blocks the effects of opioids, curbs cravings and stops the painful withdrawal symptoms. When used in combination with therapy and education, opioid addicts have great success in breaking the addiction cycle for good.
Kady says it was the call to Dr. Lakin and the subsequent treatment that changed her life. Even with Suboxone, though, recovery isn’t the easiest road. “It took years to develop the habit; it will take years to get rid of it,” she said. “You have to work hard. It takes time. There’s no quick way to do it. But it’s totally worth it.”
Functioning Addict
Born and raised in Arkansas, Kady’s first brush with drugs was with meth when she was 16. Her sister gave it to her to try, telling her it would help her lose weight. Kady used until she
At the time, Kady had five young children, was coaching her daughter’s softball team and was working as the postmaster in Roe, Arkansas. So having the energy to manage all of her duties — and doing so without pain — felt like a huge advantage. But the high didn’t last long. Kady realized two things: She needed more and more pills to keep her energy up, and if she stopped taking the pills, she got sick.
Before long she was deep into addiction. “You get tired, things are chaotic and all you can think about is finding pills,” she said. “You go from being a normal person to a junkie.” Driven to fund her pill habit, Kady stole money orders from the post office she managed and ended up serving 6 months in federal prison. Her addiction continued in prison, where it was easy to get pills. When she was released, nothing changed. “I broke my probation because that’s what you do when you’re in addiction,” she said. She and her husband separated. Their lives were in shambles.
When they had the opportunity to move to Wichita, Kady knew she wanted to change for good. “I was sick and I didn’t want to keep spending money like that. I didn’t want to repeat what happened in Arkansas here,” she said.
If it weren’t for finding Dr. Lakin in Wichita, she says, her kids (now ages 21, 19, 18, 17 and 16) would be just another statistic. Instead, they are thriving and doing well in school. Kady is the manager at Subway in Pratt; she and her husband are going on 18 years of marriage. “We bought a house; we actually have things now,” she said. “It’s a lot different. It’s a lot better.”

Celebrating Tremendous Teens in the ICT
Written by Alexis Evans
Wichita Collegiate Senior Soars to Miss America Teen Competition
For Miss Kansas’ Teen 2023 Erin Rolfe, being the best version of herself is not just an option, it’s a necessity. In addition to competing in and winning the top prize in the Miss Kansas’ Teen pageant in March – part of the Miss America organization – she also created a community service initiative focusing on mental health and helped raise over $20,000 for the American Heart Association, all before her senior year of high school.
As the daughter of two prominent Wichita figures, John Rolfe, president and CEO of the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Felicia Rolfe, news anchor at KWCH, Erin, 17, and older sister Evan have the ultimate examples of working hard to achieve their dreams. Erin said she draws a great deal of inspiration from her parents. “They’re my role models, not only for what they do in the community, but because they motivate me to be the best that I can be,” she said.
Erin said that after watching a friend compete in the Miss Kansas Teen pageant, she was motivated to join the fray. “I attended the Miss Kansas Teen pageant for two years in support of a friend who was competing. After seeing how much fun it was, and the scholarships she was awarded, I wanted to participate too,” she said. Miss America’s Teen is a division of the Miss America program for women ages 13-18.
Erin’s pageant win earned her $6,500 in college scholarships, in addition to multiple scholarship offers from Kansas colleges and other universities throughout the United States. She will have the opportunity to compete in the Miss America’s Teen pageant, representing the state of Kansas. Since her win, she has been busy representing the crown at events across the state, like helping kick off
the Johnson County National Alliance on Mental Illness walk, singing the national anthem at the Tour de Wichita and hosting a benefit concert to support mental health organizations.
The driven teen just finished her junior year at Wichita Collegiate School, where she is a 4.0 student and president of the student council. She also plays soccer, speaks French, and is a classical vocalist. Her love of music prompted her community service initiative Mental Harmony: What’s the Music for Your Mind? “I encourage others to find an outlet that keeps them mentally happy and healthy,” she said.
After graduation in May 2024, she hopes to attend New York University and major in music theater and law. This summer she will be a performing intern for Music Theatre of Wichita and will continue to champion the Miss Kansas’ Teen organization.

‘Hard Work Makes You Happier’
All Eyes on KU Freshman After Standout Track Season
An Andover High School graduate is making waves in the collegiate track and field world, and as a 19-year-old true freshman, there’s nowhere to go but up. Tayton Klein is set to compete in the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 7-10 in both long jump and the decathlon.
The University of Kansas track and field standout has been putting up record-breaking numbers competing in heptathlon and decathlon events for the Jayhawks this year. With nearOlympic qualifying numbers, he has ample reason to believe in his goal of being eligible for next summer’s Olympic qualifying event.
The son of Terry and Jody Klein has regularly made “impossible” his new norm, first at Andover where he excelled in soccer, basketball, football and track, and now at KU, where his stats are far better than his 5-10, 160-pound frame would suggest were even possible.
Having launched his career working out alongside Division 1-level Wichita Roadrunners club members at the tender age of 6, he has since made a name for himself by going above and beyond the expectations of those around him. “Originally the (Roadrunners) coach was like, ‘He’s too young. Come back in a couple of years,’ ” he recalls. “They had a lot of phenomenal athletes, but my mom said, ‘Let him run a lap. Just watch.’ The rest is history.”
“I’d always been an active kid,” he said. “I was playing baseball at age 6, but I was pretty antsy and had a hard time keeping still. Then I saw my four siblings running track and that seemed more my speed.” After competing in several Junior Olympic events in grade school and middle school, his focus turned to competing in high school sports, where track took a back seat to football and basketball. It was his success in football that initially generated interest in him as an athlete.
He expected to play college football, but his plans changed his junior year when his skills in track began to overshadow his gridiron prowess. “Something clicked,” he said. “Whether I developed into a more mature body or whatever it may have been, I had a breakout year, winning state in the long jump and placing in the 4x400-meter relay.”
Under the tutelage of several club team coaches and his brother-in-law, former Wichita State University track standout Grant Ralston, Klein emerged as one of the state’s premier high school track athletes. After drawing recruiting interest from a number of Division 1 schools, he decided to enroll at the University of Kansas where he felt he would be close enough for family and friends to support him.
It didn’t take long to establish himself as a prized up-andcomer. “After I got started training, the coaches (Paul Thornton and Tom Hayes) said, ‘This kid works hard and has natural skills. We just have to shape him into a decathlete,’ ”Klein said. “Their standards were high, but after my first college meet, where I won the long jump, they started to accept that I did belong here and had what it took to compete

at this level. It’s really been awesome to see the progression and how hard work has paid off.”
Klein has done little but win since, earning recognition on a national level during the Big 12 Indoor Conference in February. While his scores fell short of qualifying for the national tournament, he still turned heads, soaring more than 25 feet in the long jump to finish third in the event and seventh overall at the indoor heptathlon. Almost overnight, his popularity and confidence soared to unrivaled heights. Following a steady path of success into the outdoor track season — which included a first-place finish in the long jump event at the John McDonnell Invitational in Arkansas — he and Hayes began to entertain the idea of testing his skill set in the Big 12 decathlon event. Unsure if he’d be competing, Klein nevertheless began preparing himself for the possibility. His eventual participation at University of Oklahoma on May 12–13 produced results that were nothing less than remarkable.
Recording scores among the top true freshman marks in the country, he amassed a two-day total score of 7,620, a number remarkably close to the 8,000 points routinely needed to qualify athletes for national competition.
Competing in five events each of the two days, his scores included a first-place finish in the 100-meter run with 10.48 seconds and first in long jump with just slightly over 25 feet. He also had a first-place finish in the 400-meter run.
In addition to his decathlon events, he also competed in the 4x100-meter relay and open long jump, bringing 6th- and 7th-place wins, respectively. Klein credits his teammates, coaches and family for providing the support that empowered him to complete each task at hand. “They all saw the effort I was putting in and what I had already done and knew what the coaches were expecting,” he said. “Because of them, I was able to push through the pain.”
As he continues to work toward his goal of competing in next year’s Olympic qualifying event, Klein envisions a whole lot of pain and sacrifice on the horizon. But as he is quick to relate on his many posts on social media, it is the combination of sacrifice and devotion that pave the way for most successful endeavors. “What track has taught me this year is that hard work is rewarded as well as appreciated,” he said. “There aren’t that many people who are willing to put in the work to get the results they dream of. Hard work makes you happier.”
This Bike Doctor Makes House Calls

Murphy’s Mobile Turns Every Bicycle
Into a Smooth Rider
Andover High School student Aidan Murphy has taken his interest in bicycles, combined it with his unique ability to fix things, and turned it into a novel, innovative business concept. At an early age, Murphy’s love of riding bikes led to his development of a skill set for taking things apart and putting them back together. Now, at 15, he’s taken that knowledge and an entrepreneurial spirit and created a business. Murphy says, “Working for myself, doing something I really enjoy, is amazing.”
The beauty of Murphy’s bicycle repair is that it’s mobile; Murphy makes “house calls” and will visit a person’s home to assess the issue and provide on-site repairs. Spotlight on Kansans’ Mental Health
Written by Eric Litwiller MHA Director of Development and Communications
Project Change Lives
The most impactful events in our lives are often the ones that we least planned for or expected.
Several weeks ago, a friend of mine texted a picture to me. He was sitting in an office at Simpson Construction and happened to see Mental Health Association’s logo in his peripheral vision. Upon closer inspection, he discovered an initiative by a Simpson employee who had attended the 2022 Beautiful Minds Gala and was so moved by our mission that the employee had created “Project Change Lives.” It was a large, plastic water-cooler type of bottle with a collar around it requesting that Simpson employees drop their change into the bottle to donate to MHA. A simple idea perhaps. And one that doesn’t impose financial hardship on anyone who participates. But isn’t that the beauty of it? When one person is touched by a mission and takes the time to consider how he or she can affect that mission for the good, there is no limit to what ideas might come from that
moment. In this case — and in a matter of days — Project Change Lives bottles have started showing up around Wichita. Reception areas. Employee lounges. Private offices and public hallways.
We have 20 more containers on order already. And I look forward to collecting them all for display for this year’s Beautiful Minds Gala at Mark Arts on October 7. Who knows how seeing them lined up on that stage might inspire just one more person to think creatively themselves.
If your office or business would like to join the movement, call 316.651.1241 to request your container. To you, it’s pennies and nickels. But to Wichita, it’s mental health care for your family, friends and employees. There is no better return on investment than that.

The Future of Fashion
Written by Lauren “L” Mercado
The First Ever AI Fashion Week
The fashion industry, a leader in innovation, is always stretching its limits. It’s hardly surprising, then, that the latest release of generative AI tools has brought about the first-ever AI Fashion Week. In late April, AI Fashion Week took place at Spring Studios in New York. The event was a unique showcase and competition for designers from around the globe to display their collections through images born from a blend of imagination and technology. The single stipulation was that the designers had to use solely AI-generated models, or “digital avatars,” to showcase their collections, complete with imagined runway settings including front-row guests. These “models” are constructed using artificial intelligence algorithms designed to mimic human features and proportions, resulting in lifelike avatars wearing apparel that resembles real-life fabrics. The images accompanying this article are all AIgenerated designs and models that I created through Midjourney, a platform that uses text prompts to guide image generation in mere seconds. After instructing the system to “imagine” my scene and design, a combination of my creative direction and the AI’s capabilities produced the resulting images. The experience was nothing short of astounding. This concept revolutionizes the fashion design experience, altering our understanding of the term “fashion-forward” indefinitely. As we think about the future of the industry, it’s apparent that this technology not only provides designers with a new realm of creativity and flexibility, but also has the potential to reduce waste and environmental damage by eliminating the need for physical samples and runway shows. It’s potentially changing the way the
Though AI Fashion Week is in its infancy, it offers a peek, nothing short of thrilling, into the future of fashion. As the fashion industry continues to evolve and adapt to new technologies, AI Fashion Week promises to be a game-changer, unveiling new possibilities for designers, retailers and consumers.
I predict that for many aspiring fashion designers, mastering systems like Midjourney (currently available in beta via Discord) will be an invaluable skill set that could kick-start their portfolios. Even seasoned designers are employing this system to elevate their imagined designs — it’s about utilizing AI as a brainstorming tool.

fashion industry works by showcasing virtual pieces before production.

How do the designs make their way into our closets, though? There have been instances when the AIgenerated design doesn’t quite work as a wearable piece. For example, one AI design featured what seemed like a regular belt, but upon closer look the belt wasn’t actually functional — the AI system didn’t quite understand how a belt works. The winners of AI Fashion Week were awarded by having their collections realized and produced into real-life clothing. Looking forward, imagine that this will be what makes exceptional AI designs stand out: designs that can actually be realized.
The fast-paced integration of AI into our everyday lives signifies that generative AI has catapulted us years into the future. There remains, however, a question over society’s reception of AI-generated fashion supermodels.
Earlier this year, Levi’s faced backlash for announcing its intention to use AI-generated fashion supermodels to increase brand diversity. This “prompts” the question: Who will Levi’s use as inspiration for their models, and why not choose living, breathing humans instead? As we move forward, the debate around regulation and ethics will undoubtedly continue. Will living models still be necessary? Who owns the AIgenerated designs? Where are the AI systems pulling their inspiration from? At the rapid pace this is all happening, there’s no doubt these questions will be answered soon.
For now, visit fashionweek.ai to view the extraordinary collections showcased at the inaugural AI Fashion Week. Prepare to be astonished.

Locally grown flowers are key to the success of Free State Flora. Here, owner Emily Forsberg explains how this passion is a commitment to customers, local farmers and the earth.
Q. Where did the dream begin? What inspired you to open a floral shop?
A. Growing up I never much cared for garden work, but my parents loved being outdoors in the garden and gardening grew on me. In 2012, in preparation for my own wedding, I started my first garden determined to grow and use our own flowers, and the time spent working on my own wedding flowers was invigorating. Slowly, I started helping friends pull off their wedding flowers and did a wedding in 2016 that changed everything. Thanks to the kind words of a florist, family and friends, I decided to try my hand professionally with flowers, survived the pandemic thanks to my amazing clients and soon after took the leap by opening my own full-blown flower shop two years ago. Reception from the community has been fabulous.
Q. What makes Free State Flora unique and stand out from other local floral shops?
A. One of my favorite things about the shop is its atmosphere. The space is quite warm and inviting. Flowers are always on display so clients and guests can get a true floral experience by touching, smelling and marveling at the blooms up close. Even assortments of dried flowers and foliage hang from the ceiling.
Part of our mission is to encourage the love of locally grown flowers. Locally grown flowers are better for the environment, support the local economy and last longer and smell better. Anytime the growing season is right, those who come to Free State Flora can always expect to buy something locally grown.
Q. What is the advantage to shopping local at Free State Flora vs. ordering flowers online?
A. Shopping with us, whether online, over the phone, or in person, means that you and your loved one will receive the freshest and most beautiful blooms we could find that week. Online national chains have specific looks they sell. Without knowing if the outside florist has any of those blooms on hand, often recipients do not receive an arrangement that looks like the image they ordered.
At Free State Flora, instead of promising specific flowers or designs online, we ask our clients if they want colorful or neutral flower looks. We ask if they have any preferences in blooms or colors and then fulfill the order based on our designer’s choices. Clients can rest assured that the money they spend stays within our community too. My advice is, whoever you choose for your floral needs, whether it is our store or another floral shop, you should always contact a floral shop directly versus ordering through a national chain.
With Emily Forsberg Owner Free State Flora
Q. What do you particularly want Wichitans to know about your shop and services provided?
A. I want our community to know that we have a super cool space full of flowers and floral goods where they can come for a few moments of quiet with flowers and friendly faces. Our team approaches floral work as an art rather than a science. We service weddings, events, and daily arrangements, and specialize in largescale flower installations for homes and businesses.
Q. What is your future vision for Free State Flora?
A. Our vision is to create a community built around the love of flowers. We want to see a diverse group of people gather — all enthralled by flowers, art and Mother Nature herself. We have been playing around with gatherings like workshops, flower shows and First Friday events that bring these people together. Next month, we will be hosting a flower show dedicated to the love of locally grown flowers as we continue to show our appreciation for local blooms, foliage and greenery. They are so important for us all, and I believe that it is our duty to support local farmers as well as the earth.

SPLURGE! Welcomes New Businesses and Happenings to Wichita

Las Adelitas Café
Two months after the opening of Las Adelitas Café downtown, a heated race was in progress for their most in-demand beverage. Co-owner Vanessa Pineda-Olguin at first said the fan favorite was their signature horchata. But then she corrected herself: “I think the Mexican Mocha is passing it right now.”
And it’s easy to see why the race is so close: Both drinks are the custom creation of Olguin’s husband and co-owner, Oscar Pineda, featuring fresh roasted beans from his first venture, Esperanza Coffee Roasters. The horchata is creamy and sweet, blending almond milk and espresso with Mexican cinnamon, vanilla and rice flavors. And the Mexican Mocha is a melding of espresso with Abuelita Mexican chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and whole milk. In addition to custom chilled drinks, and pastries from Juarez Bakery, Las Adelitas Café offers several other signature espresso drinks, all equally infused with Hispanic culture — as is the atmosphere of the cafe located near the corner of 1st and Market. The large graphic paintings on the wall are by local artist Armando Minjarez, who also created the cafe’s pottery mugs as a modernized version of the traditional cantaritos clay cup. The owners’ culture is infused not only in their drinks and decor, but through their emphasis on community and familia
Pineda enjoys developing new products and bringing out the subtle natural flavors in the coffee beans he roasts. “I always say coffee is not just coffee. Coffee is community. It’s people. It’s flavors. It’s not just bitter.”
Find @Las Adelitas Café on Facebook to review their menu and monthly drink specials.
1400 by Elderslie at the Wichita Art Museum
Scone lovers, rejoice. Elderslie Farm has taken over the cafe space in the Wichita Art Museum and rebranded it 1400 by Elderslie. And they’ve brought their classic blackberry lemon scone and cheesy grits, according to chef Katharine Elder. Not to mention, they have “infused the whole menu with cheeses from the Elderslie Creamery.”
After their first two months inside WAM, Elder adds, “We have been delighted to have so much traffic. We are thankful for the positive response as we continue to settle in to the space and grow our team and quality. It was a very fast and furious start!”
The charcuterie boards at 1400 boast old-world-style cheeses, including goat cheese from a herd pampered on grass grazing for the highest quality goat milk. There’s also an extensive cocktail list, including hand-crafted non-alcoholic and alcoholic options, “many named after pieces of art in the museum!” says Elder. The artisanal attention to detail goes beyond the culinary offerings and extends to the black walnut charcuterie boards and tables crafted by the Elderslie Woodworks team, along with some other upgrades to make the space more open and modern.
The museum is now open late on Friday evenings for pop-up performances, activities, and classes, and at 1400 by Elderslie guests can experience the perfect culinary complement: a special Friday dinner menu, cocktails, light bites and dessert.
Hours: Wednesday–Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Open late for dinner until 9 p.m. Friday. Closed Monday, Tuesday and major holidays. For menu and more information go to 1400.eldersliefarm.com.

UPCOMING MOVIES, June 2023
Written by Levi Schwertfeger
From Indiana Jones to Miles Morales to Optimus Prime, your favorite movie characters are back to kick off the summer movie season. June is a major month for blockbuster movie releases, and this year production companies pulled favorite characters from the archives to bring sequels, sequels and more sequels to the big screen. So beat the heat and head to the theater to watch familiar characters face new challenges in the cinematic universe.
‘Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse’
June 2, 2023 (PG), Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin Thompson.
This is the sequel we have all been waiting for after being impressed by the unique style and storytelling of “Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse.” Following the same Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) we find out more about the extensive — or even infinite — Spider-verse.
‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’
June 9, 2023 (PG-13), Directed by Steven Caple Jr.
The seventh “Transformers” movie that has blessed us with even more Michael Bay explosions is here. We are introduced to a new breed of transformer coming in the shape of giant beasts instead of cars and electronics — a very interesting twist on the franchise that is sure to excite fans of the series. Starring Anthony Ramos as Noah Diaz, an ex-military electronics expert, along with the familiar voice of Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.
‘The Flash’
June 16, 2023 (PG-13), Directed by Andy Muschietti.
If you are more of a DC fan then have no fear. “The Flash” is here in a brand new movie with what looks to be a fantastic story as Barry Allen goes back in time to work with his past self, Batman, as well as Supergirl. Starring Ezra Miller as Barry Allen (aka The Flash) once again, and both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne (aka The Batman).
‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’
June 30, 2023 (PG-13), Directed by James Mangold.
Although Harrison Ford shows no plans of retiring, it looks like Indiana Jones does. In this fifth rendition of the series, we see Indiana Jones attempting one last adventure before ending his vault-hunting expeditions while searching for the Dial of Destiny. Starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, and Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Jürgen Voller. We can hope that this will put a cherry on top of this legendary series – or even more so, that this will not be the end.

Eagle Scout Class of 2001
For many who achieve the Eagle Scout rank, their Eagle project is not only the pinnacle of their Scouting career, it’s also a tangible reminder of the lifelong lessons learned in Boy Scouts. Often a large undertaking, the projects require ingenuity, leadership, organization, collaboration with community members and good old-fashioned hard work, and the completed projects often serve the community for decades and beyond. That was the case with David Myers’ Eagle Scout project, which involved sprucing up an existing Scouting project in Oregon where Myers lived at the time. “An Eagle Scout before me had planted a bunch of trees along the river, but the weeds had overgrown the trees and it hadn’t been maintained,” said Myers, a husband and father of three who moved to Wichita nearly two years ago to serve as associate general counsel at Spirit AeroSystems. “We fed the trees, cut down the weeds, put down mulch and beautified the area.”
When Myers returned to the spot as an adult, he was pleasantly surprised by what he saw. “Going to the park 15 years later, the trees have grown up and there’s this beautiful wooded area. It’s cool to have that legacy,” he said. Myers grew up in Las Vegas and joined Scouting as part of the youth activities of the Mormon Church his family attended. With six children in the family, all three of Myers’ brothers also earned their Eagle badges, thanks in part to his mom’s encouragement. When the family moved to Oregon, Myers said his involvement with Scouts there helped him make friends.
“It taught me you can make connections in any setting and gave me opportunities to connect to people and get to know them,” he said. “It taught me valuable interpersonal skills, and it also taught me self sufficiency — that things don’t always work the way you expect them to and you kind of figure it out. Those are lessons I still rely on today.”

Fun, family and friends fill our homes during these midsummer months, and our living space extends to the outdoors, surrounded by blooms and warming breezes. Having quick recipes for adult beverages, dips, salads and sweet treats makes any gathering a simple pleasure.
Sublime Summerita
Makes a small pitcher of four drinks
4 cups ice (crushed or Sonic-style ice works well or skip the ice while making and serve on the rocks)
8 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Juice of 1 clementine or 1 ounce Cointreau
2/3 cup tequila or to taste
3 tablespoons sugar, or sugar alternative equivalent (does not have to be granular)
1 teaspoon lime zest
1 cup or more carbonated beverage if desired (Fresca makes the best margaritas)
2 limes sliced into wedges
Salt (sea salt, Kosher or Himalayan pink) for rim of serving glasses
In a small glass pitcher add desired ice, fresh lime juice, clementine juice or Cointreau, tequila, sugar or sugar alternative, lime zest and carbonated beverage. With a cocktail stirrer or narrow spatula, stir well for 30 seconds. Set aside. Pour salt onto a small plate. Run one lime wedge along the rim of each serving glass. Turn each glass over to dip onto the salted plate. After each glass’s rim is salted, fill with Sublime Summerita, and enjoy. For a little additional flair, cut a lime wedge and anchor on the rim of each glass.
Scotcheroos
6 cups crispy rice or other cereal
1 cup sugar
1 cup Karo syrup
1 cup peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup milk chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
For dessert bar mixture: Place cereal in a large bowl. Set aside. In a saucepan, heat sugar and Karo syrup just until it reaches a low, rolling boil. Remove from heat and stir in peanut butter. Then stir in vanilla. Combine this mixture with the cereal. Mix well and press into a 9 x 11 baking dish.
For chocolate topping: Place chocolate and butterscotch chips in a medium glass bowl and microwave. Heat in 30-second increments, stirring between them, until completely melted and smooth. Pour over dessert bar mixture and spread evenly. Allow to cool completely, cut and enjoy.
Caprese
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons dried basil
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 cucumber, cut in half lengthwise and very thinly sliced
1½ cup grape tomatoes, halved
¼ diced red onion (optional)
8 ounces fresh mozzarella
In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, balsamic vinegar, dried oregano, dried basil, salt and pepper. Set aside. Cut the ends off a clean cucumber. Cut lengthwise and slice thinly. Add to a medium-sized bowl. Wash and quarter the cherry tomatoes. Add to the bowl with the cucumbers. Thinly slice and dice the red onion (optional). Add to bowl with cucumbers and tomatoes. Slice mozzarella into bite-sized pieces (or use pearl-sized mozzarella balls). Add to bowl with cucumbers, tomatoes and red onion. Pour marinade over vegetables and mozzarella; mix well. Allow to sit for 10 minutes before serving.
Spicy Corn Dip
4 ounces cream cheese, softened
½ cup sour cream
½ cup real mayonnaise
15.5-ounce can of whole kernel corn, drained
10-ounce can of Rotel, drained
2 cups Mexican shredded cheese
3–4 finely chopped green onion
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
In a large mixing bowl, place softened cream cheese, sour cream and mayo. Add salt, pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder and sugar. Use electric mixer to blend ingredients until smooth and creamy. Add corn, Rotel, shredded cheese and green onion. Stir well. Cover and place in the refrigerator for at least two hours prior to serving.
