Notes From the Publisher & Staff Couples Who Work Together Slay Together Anyone who is married, grew up around married people, or has married friends knows that one major defining trait of marriage is working together. From the first days after their nuptials, the couple has to figure out how to work together on things like dividing household chores and getting the bills paid. As their relationship progresses they work together to raise children, make sure household guests don’t stay too long, and — one of the biggest tests in a marriage — remain friends while undergoing a household remodeling project.

account executive tells her story about battling back after a stroke threatened her life. And a Wichita woman explains how her life was affected by a physician who is serving 30 years in federal prison for running a “pill mill.” Enjoy perusing our fashion section where we feature some fantastic late-winter outfits, and browse for yourself, your friends and your acquaintances in the many Local Faces we have in this issue. Stay warm, and think spring thoughts! XO, Jody and Amy

But the couples that we’ve featured in this month’s Valentine issue have taken “working together” to a new level. They share careers, which means they also share colleagues, lunch breaks and conversations around the water cooler. Read their stories and you might be amazed, like we are, that these couples have figured out how to not only tolerate one another at work, but thrive together. Their talents and giftings, though sometimes opposite, meld together into a winning combination. Like two metals being forged together, the finished product is stronger than the individual elements alone. Kudos to these fun and industrious couples who have taken a step of faith and discovered they can walk on water — together. Also in this issue, don’t miss the cool story about a man’s lifetime love for balloons and a desire to make sure no child leaves an event without some kind of awesome creation. A longtime SPLURGE!

Valentine Work Buddies Sweetest Couples Who Love and Work Together Setting up shop with a spouse is next-level matrimony. These couples are coach and athlete to each other, entrepreneurs and engineers, creators and visionaries. And through it all they’re innovating in the lab of marriage at the same time. Here they share drops of wisdom: how to balance it all through communication, sacrifice, hard work, accountability, playfulness and laughter.

Carolyn and Ashley Cozine Written by Paige Feikert

Taking a Legacy Family Business to the Future Finding a partner to support the legacy of a family business can be a challenge in itself. Particularly a business as unconventional as memorial services, requiring care for others and often demanding long, irregular schedules — but Carolyn Cozine didn’t shy away. “My time is not my own at all, and that’s tough when you have a family,” said Ashley Cozine, Carolyn’s husband. “I’m blessed that she is very supportive, and she always has been, which has led to a strong marriage.” Carolyn and Ashley Cozine operate Cozine Memorial Group, a company that has provided funeral and memorial services in Wichita for decades. Ashley is the third generation to own and operate the business, and Carolyn joined the team a few years ago with the addition of the Cozine Life Events Center — a venue that the Cozines designed to celebrate any life event. “I love being able to get her opinion, and I love taking care of families and having [Carolyn] extend that care to them as well. When people say, ‘Thank you both for taking care of our family,’ that to me is super rewarding, and to share it with Carolyn and to know it is a family effort is really special,” Ashley said. For the Cozines, working together has brought a better understanding of one another, and ultimately has strengthened their marriage. “Some people joke and say, ‘I would never work with my spouse,’ and I think that’s true if you jumped in and didn’t understand what they did. But I’d say it takes your relationship to the next level, and I think it’s made ours better,” Carolyn said. “I can’t imagine not working with Carolyn. I love it,” Ashley added. Working together has provided the Cozines an opportunity to watch each other lean into their strengths and grow meaningful relationships in the Wichita community. “Something I’ve always appreciated about Ashley is that he’s an entrepreneur and a visionary. He’s had ideas about things that are beyond his time or futuristic in a way,” Carolyn said. “He has the gift of being creative and finding the next idea that could be helpful to people.” The Cozines are looking ahead to what upcoming generations will bring to the company, since they hope their children grow a similar passion for what they do at Cozine Memorial Group. Their oldest son, Hillard, graduated from Kansas State University in May 2022, and 8

joined them in Wichita, making it a four-generation family business. He brings a fresh set of perspectives, skills and ideas, which inspires both Ashley and Carolyn. “Having a new generation join the business is taking the privilege of serving families to a whole new level,” Ashley said. Sam and Dan Stull Written by Paige Feikert

Marriage Muscles The sport of bodybuilding is known to require sacrifices, discipline, hard work and accountability, much like a healthy marriage — and one Wichita couple is proof. Dan Stull is the owner of Team Icon, a bodybuilding and lifestyle coaching company, and is a professional bodybuilder himself. His wife, Sam, works with Team Icon as a stage presence and posing coach, and is also coached by Dan on the amateur level. When it comes to working together with the athletes at Team Icon, Dan and Sam know their strengths. Dan has been bodybuilding for more than a decade and handles the training, while Sam has taken to the stage presence. She helps athletes with everything on the stage, from their makeup and tanning to perfecting their poses to best represent their physique on stage.

“When we put [coaching and training] away, we can go back to being husband and wife and protecting the romance,” Dan said. “I want to be there as her support and her rock, and sometimes you’ve got to put away the coaching hat for that.” Working and living together have taught Sam and Dan to give each other grace, have uncomfortable conversations early, don’t keep score, and above all, always have fun.

“We have really good communication in our marriage in general, so I think that translates well into our working relationship,” Sam said. Their compatibility is also important when Dan and Sam work together as coach and athlete. In his role as a coach, Dan holds Sam accountable, but in his role as a husband, he makes those moments a little easier.

“None of the tests feel like more than we can handle together,” Dan said. “Have fun, don’t stop playing, don’t lose your sense of childlike play, because if you lose that, I feel like you miss out on a lot of experiences.”

“On days that she doesn’t want to go to the gym and I’ve already worked out, I’ll still go with her,” Dan said. “It’s a huge advantage for both of us, working toward that and being under the same roof.” But training for a bodybuilding competition requires focused dedication, both in the gym and out of it. Diet is a major component of sculpting a bodybuilder’s physique; after weeks of a restricted diet, and no place for a secret cheat meal, patience can grow thin. “I respect him and his expertise. I wouldn’t have him as a coach if I didn’t think he could lead me in the right direction to win. But in the moment when you’ve been prepping for 17-plus weeks and all you want is a cheeseburger, and he [your coach] says, ‘You’re not doing that,’ then the claws are coming out,” Sam said. Through their own training and working together with Team Icon, Sam and Dan have found a harmony between coach and athlete, husband and wife.

Timirie and Patrick Shibley Written by Paige Feikert

Marriage From Scratch Some say the first few years of a marriage are the toughest, but that certainly didn’t deter Timirie and Patrick Shibley from opening one of Wichita’s most iconic restaurants, Doo-Dah Diner, just a year-and-ahalf into their marriage. “We opened our diner at the time normal couples have their first child,” Timirie said. “This diner has very much been like our baby and it’s very much run like a family.” The Shibleys opened Doo-Dah Diner more than a decade ago in a dramatic way. Patrick found a Craigslist ad for a restaurant for sale in downtown Wichita, so the couple checked it out. Roughly 30 days later, Doo-Dah Diner was officially born. With experience in the restaurant industry, Patrick took care of the back of the house, overseeing the sourcing, preparing and cooking of food, while Timirie took the lead on everything else. “No, we weren’t dreaming about opening our own restaurant; I was just trying to make [Patrick] happy by going to look at it,” Timirie said. “We had no business plan, we had no real investors, we had no company credit card, we got our dishes from Goodwill and garage sales. Through a lot of blood, sweat and tears we opened up.” The couple started writing the menu just three days before opening, and much of the menu remains the same today. The made-fromscratch dishes are a draw for people across the country: from Harrison Ford to the ESPN GameDay crew, the diner has served as a must-stop for visitors and regulars alike.

“I think the key to anybody’s success, especially in our marriage and our business together, would be just a lot of laughter. Making sure laughter gets in there because it drowns out so many issues,” Patrick said. “Whimsical and laid-back is in our business definition, so we have to have laughter,” Timirie added. And now the Shibleys are facing something new: a cancer diagnosis for Patrick, something the couple says they’re taking on as a team. “The diner is running really well with us in an advisory role, so we can focus on Patrick’s healing,” Timirie said. “We are still working together, but our priority is getting him healthy. It’s a journey we’re doing together.” For Doo-Dah Diner menu and hours, go to doodahdiner.com.

“The concept — I didn’t realize it at the time, how much we do from scratch — really became a niche,” Timirie said. “We are the real fromscratch. We take from-scratch to a new level.” Perhaps a concept so closely resembling the couple who brought it to life is what has magnetized celebrity status for Doo-Dah Diner. The definition on the staff’s shirts describes Doo-Dah as a nickname for Wichita, referencing its laid-back and whimsical atmosphere — something Patrick and Timirie also use to describe themselves. “Our concept then was whimsical and laid-back. We aren’t perfect, we aren’t fancy, we use ‘Yeah, we’re totally Doo-Dah’ as a playful, not structured, completely-opposite-of-corporate environment that feels like home,” Timirie said. “It’s a nickname for our hometown.” The Shibleys have found the secret to success for both running a business and maintaining a happy marriage: laughter. 10

Bobbi and Guy Barton Written by Paige Feikert

Two Smart Cookies Some couples would say living together, working together

and sharing a short commute together every day would be a challenge, but Bobbi and Guy Barton of Halstead, owners of Bobbi’s Cutters, aren’t one of those couples. In fact, the Bartons find running a business together on their property to be the perfect fit. “It’s not for everybody, but it works so well for us, I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Bobbi said. “Guy and I just get along great. We have breakfast together, and lunch together, and dinner together, and we’re together all day long and we don’t grow tired of each other.” In a way, the business created itself. Bobbi was making and selling cookies at the time and needed a specific shape. That’s when she asked Guy to make her a cutter using his 3D printer. From there the demand grew. Bobbi was constantly taking requests for custom cookie cutters, so much so that she was balancing a full-time day job with the booming cookie-cutter business during the evenings and weekends. Eventually Bobbi quit her day job and focused full-time on her cookie cutter business. But as the number of 3D printers grew from one to three to 10 and now up to more than 50, the couple faced a new dilemma. “When you have that many printers there’s a lot of maintenance,” Guy said. “It just became a drain, because you’d work 40 hours a week and come home and work 20 to 30 hours a week; you just can’t do both.” Five years after Bobbi began focusing full time on her business, Guy joined her.

“Financially we made the decision that we would be okay and we could work at our own business and be our own bosses, and it has worked well for us,” Bobbi said. Bobbi is the artistic mind behind the company. She follows the latest trends, works with bakers who try out their new designs, and markets to customers. Meanwhile, Guy manages the technical side, maintaining the printers and taking care of any computer work. “I’m technically challenged, and Guy, that’s one of his strong suits. And he’s artistically challenged, and that’s one of my strong suits,” Bobbi said. And while the Bartons recognize this type of working relationship wouldn’t be for everyone, they now can’t imagine a life without it. “We’ve been married for almost 17 years and I will say this: When we met each other, I would label it as love at first sight for both of us,” Bobbi said. Dr. Terry Klein

Partner at Wichita Research Facility AMR Written by Caroline Jones

Are you frustrated by increasing weight, blood pressure and blood sugar? Are you on a path toward Type 2 diabetes and don’t know what to do? Dr. Terry Klein and his team want to help you with your overall wellness so that you can get back to doing the things you love with the people you love. AMR’s El Dorado location is looking for participants in an upcoming study that will help identify and treat the short- and longterm effects of metabolic syndrome.

Q. What is metabolic syndrome? A. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase risk of heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes. People with metabolic syndrome have developed unhealthy levels of insulin resistance, causing their bodies to store too much sugar and deposit too much fat in the liver. This will often cause a body to become apple-shaped, carrying a lot of weight in the abdomen, and can ultimately have a devastating effect on organs like the heart and the liver.

Q. Who is affected by metabolic syndrome? A. Looking at 2024, we believe that greater than 35

percent of the U.S. population has problems with deposition of fat in the liver, which causes greater inflammation, diminished liver function, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance is especially prevalent in the Midwest because, on average, people in this region of the United States are more prone to unhealthy activity and eating habits.

Q. What is this study about? A. We view this study as a way to help people with their

wellness goals. Throughout the trial, we will increase the quantity of a chemical that is already naturally occurring in your body so that we can decrease the dire risks involved with metabolic syndrome. This injection will help people live a modified, healthier lifestyle and reverse some of the inflammatory damage that has happened in their bodies. Studies like this one have been very successful in the past, helping people reduce insulin levels, improve liver function, and decrease weight, while ultimately decreasing their risk of having a heart attack or a stroke. This study is unique because it will take a slightly different look at a very common issue with the

12

hope of attaining an FDA-approved treatment that is more cost effective, better tolerated and more effective.

Q. Who is a good candidate for this study? A. For this study, we are looking for adult men and women

ages 18 to 80 who have symptoms of metabolic syndrome. If you are pre-diabetic or have Type 2 diabetes, if you have been told by a medical professional that you have high levels of blood pressure, blood sugar or triglycerides, or if you carry more of your weight around your abdomen, you may be a good candidate for this trial.

Q. What will the process look like for participants? A. This study will occur in our El Dorado location and will

last for one year, with the possibility of an extension to two years under specific circumstances. Participants can expect pre-study evaluation, injections during the trial and intermittent appointments during and after the trial.

How to Participate

To participate in AMR’s metabolic syndrome study, call AMR El Dorado at 316.600.5127.

I Choose Grace and Keep Going Written by Debi Devor-Mullins

Debi Devor-Mullins is the marketing director for White Eagle Credit Union and account executive with SPLURGE! Reach her at debi@splurgemag.com.

Sustaining Faith During a Health Crises Editor’s note: In honor of February as National Heart Month, the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention is encouraging women to listen to their hearts and speak up for their health. We asked Debi DevorMullins, a longtime SPLURGE! account executive, to tell her stroke story in hopes that it might help prevent a stroke or encourage someone on their stroke-recovery journey. Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, started as any other day, except for the lingering headache that had persisted for the past few days, although it was different from your typical headache — more painful and alarming. I first experienced this pain over the weekend during our family photos with my daughters, Hannah, Makenzi and Mariah. Throughout the session, my headache worsened. But I kept going, and praying, “God, please help me through these pictures with my girls and this weekend of celebration.” Looking back, I had this instinctive feeling earlier in the week to ask Hannah to come home from college so we could get photos taken, and also celebrate her 21st birthday. Little did I know what the photoshoot was documenting and how it would become a monumental element in my stroke story. While sitting at my desk that Monday, I began to smell something burning. Concerned and confused, I asked my colleagues if they too could smell it, but everyone looked at me like I was a bit crazy because they didn’t smell anything. As my headache grew more intense, there was a loud “pop” in my neck, which felt like a rubber band had just broken. I sat still at my desk and started taking deep breaths, trying not to become fearful, even though I knew something was wrong. My face started to feel weird, losing sensation and feeling abnormal. I tried to keep working, but as everything grew more intense, I finally knew I needed to go home. I felt worse when I got home, which prompted me to call the doctor, who directed me to Dr. Mayans. When Dr. Mayans saw me, he immediately knew what had happened. My left vertebral artery was dissected, causing me to experience a stroke. Due to the dissection (a Debi Devor-Mullins poses with friends Dan and small tear or opening in Shannon Roberts who visited her in the hospital the artery), blood clots after her stroke. were released into my brain, resulting in several smaller strokes. The doctors determined that the dissection was inoperable, since its location was too risky and small to access; because of this, my blood needed to be thinned to prevent blood clots and any further damage to the dissection, so I began taking Warfarin. All seemed to be doing better until Christmas Eve 2017 when I went to church with my daughters and dad. While sitting in the pew, listening to the Christmas performances, I began to feel very sick. Not wanting 16

to take any chances, we acted fast, and Hannah rushed me to the hospital. Upon arrival, I was admitted to the NCU floor at St. Francis where I would stay for the next six days and go on to experience a couple of smaller strokes before stabilizing and being released on New Year’s Eve. During my time in the hospital, I never stopped praying and continued to fight, not allowing myself to lose the long battle and become the next victim of a stroke. My road to recovery had just begun, and is one that I’m still navigating today. Between headaches, exhaustion and learning to write again, I would go on to learn one of my biggest lessons: to give myself grace. A Bible verse that has given me strength is 2 Corinthians 12:9: “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast even more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” This powerful verse is one that I continuously lean on to remind me that God gives each of us grace, and He gives us rest. Through this life-changing journey, I have learned to accept His grace while also giving myself grace. Whenever my face decides to go loopy or something else doesn’t work right as a result of my strokes, I try to find the positives and let them be a reminder of the incredible battle that I have fought. In life, I can become a victim, survivor or warrior. I choose to be a warrior.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

With

Lowell D. Ebersole, DO, FHM Chief Medical Officer Wesley Healthcare

Photography by Tim Larsen

Q. You’re a Wichita native. Tell us a little bit about your family and why you decided to stay in Wichita?

A. My wife, Patresa, and I have four children ages 15 to 23.

We were married the summer before I started medical school in Des Moines, Iowa, and I completed my residency training in Wichita. We desired to stay in Wichita and we have been blessed to raise our family here. I had a 15-year clinical career as a hospitalist before making the transition to executive physician leadership five years ago. I was born at Wesley, so it’s pretty cool that I am now the chief medical officer at the hospital in which I was born!

Q. What’s the biggest challenge facing a hospital the size of Wesley Healthcare?

A. The biggest challenge remains meeting all of the

staffing needs of the hospital to match the healthcare demands of our community and state.

Q. Tell us a little bit about co-chairing the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball.

A. Co-chairing the Heart Ball has been rewarding in so

many ways, from learning more about how AHA impacts patients, families and our community, to spending time with the Ambassadors. I’ve been connecting with friends and colleagues to raise awareness of AHA and its mission. It has been a lot of fun and I look forward to sharing the stage on February 10 with my co-chair Alex Melugin!

Q. How can someone donate to this great cause? A. For more information, to donate or to purchase tickets to the Heart Ball, go to heart.org/wichitaheartball

A Fresh Start for Human Trafficking Survivors White says it’s the stories of changed lives – and altered generations – that keep her and the organization going. “We are changing generational stories,” she said. “I have seen parents whose kids are not going to have the same story they have had, taking a multigenerational thing in a family, and it stops with them. That creates a whole new story that ripples out. We see clients getting jobs, housing, etc. That changes their story for generations to come.” White said that ICT SOS volunteers and supporters become a part of something greater than themselves. They become part of a movement that seeks to end the cycle of exploitation and bring about lasting change. Donations directly contribute to the empowerment of survivors and the education of the community, as well as help advance the fight against human trafficking.

Stopping Generational Trauma in Its Tracks When Jennifer White started seeing news stories about sex and labor trafficking in 2011, it was a gut-check moment for the lifetime Wichitan. “The stories were about the average age of entry into trafficking, which is 12 to 14,” White recalled. “I had a 12-year-old at home. That really hit home for me.” She wanted to become involved and make a difference, but soon learned there were not many volunteer opportunities or ways to help. That’s when White set out to make a way for community members to work with the guidance of professionals to combat trafficking, and ICT SOS was born. The mission of the grassroots nonprofit organization is to “end human trafficking through prevention and awareness education.” The group also advocates for survivors and acts as a bridge between direct service professionals and community members who want to help. When asked where the name ICT SOS came from, White says, “I didn’t know I was starting a nonprofit. We actually started as a hashtag on Twitter: #ICTSOS. We did a donation drive to gather supplies for a street outreach at The Wichita Children’s Home, and an article was written about us in the paper. The article was titled ‘ICT SOS’ – ICT for Wichita and SOS for help – and it stuck. We just got bigger and bigger and evolved into a nonprofit. By that point our name was too well known to change it.” The organization has grown exponentially since 2011, and White credits that to awareness. “From the beginning we have been very intentional about partnerships within the community. I was able to recognize the gaps and fill them,” she says. ICT SOS started with prevention and education through partnering with victim and child services organizations. In 2020, they added training for medical and law enforcement as well as adult advocacy programs. 20

Smile Makeover Dr. Joseph Houlik As smile experts, our goal is to help patients achieve a beautiful smile they are confident in. Sometimes the journey is simple and other times a bit more complex depending on what’s most important to the patient. Here is one of our latest smile transformations.

Initial Consult A female patient came in to us with discolored, worn teeth that also had multiple cavities. Instead of fixing them one at a time and matching them to our existing smile, we decided to work on all of the teeth together. This put us in the driver’s seat, allowing us to control the new tooth length, shape, and color to create an ideal bite and smile.

Preparation We digitally designed and created the blueprint for the new smile before working on any of the teeth. Once we were happy with our design, it was time to begin our preparations of all the top teeth. In the photo to the right you can see the teeth we are working on, our new bite registration, and recorded base color that helps with our new shade choice.

Provisionals The same day we prepare the teeth we also place our provisional (temporary) restorations. This is an important step because it allows the patient to take the new teeth for a test drive while we evaluate aesthetics, feel and function. At this stage we can also make adjustments if there is something we would like to change.

Final Restorations After confirming we like our provisionals, it’s time to fabricate the final restorations. The final restorations were all individual and cemented at the same appointment. Our patient was thrilled with the results. We were able to achieve a beautiful result and help improve her overall oral health.

EAGLE SCOUTS IN ACTION Eagle Scout Walter Lewis Written by Caroline Jones

With a passion for being prepared and helping others, it’s no surprise that Walter Lewis dedicated Class of 1978 45 years of his life to Scouting programs in Wichita. Becoming an Eagle Scout is part of his can-do attitude. “It is a challenge to earn the rank of Eagle. There can be delays in working through the ranks, but as an Eagle Scout, you can look back and say, ‘I did that, I achieved that! What’s the next thing I can take on as a challenge and achieve?’ ” Scouting provides leadership opportunities. From Cub Scout to Boy Scout to Eagle Scout and on to a business career, Lewis focuses on the people he can impact instead of his own gain. “When you have the willingness to try and do, whether you succeed or not, you can still learn from it, you can touch lives. You make a difference in someone’s life.” This desire to have an impact in the lives of people around him stems from his faith in God and was reflected in service projects he did as part of accomplishing the Eagle Scout rank. “There’s a sense of gratitude when you finish a project, especially when someone says thank you,” he said. “You remember, then say thank you to others, and see

how people will smile if you simply thank them for their help. People are not always grateful. But we provide service to others anyway. Because of who we are and what our character is as Eagle Scouts, we help other people.” After pursuing double majors in real estate and marketing at Baylor University, leading to a successful career in commercial real estate brokerage and development, Lewis remained involved in Scouting, becoming a Quivira Council board member as well as an Eagle Scout advancement committee district representative. “You have to be able to see things through,” Lewis said, reflecting upon his career. “It’s easy to quit … it’s easy to quit anything in life. But the Eagle Scout (rank) teaches you to take a series of steps in life, whether it’s learning skills or just seeing something through. All of that takes perseverance, and that’s certainly a skill that continues.” Quivira Council and Morgan Stanley are proud to bring you Eagle Scouts in Action, a monthly showcase of community leaders who are banding together to make a difference in our community! If you are interested in joining Scouting or have an Eagle Scout in Action you think deserves honoring, call us at 316.264.3386.

They include functional nutrition testing, nutraceutical and supplement support, and functional hormone testing. In addition, dietitian analysis and support are offered by HGN to all patients with medication or procedural weight loss.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, PSC Wellness and Weight Loss at the Plastic Surgery Center can help! You’ll find an extensive menu of solutions and a top-notch staff to help you. With our caring and experienced team, we can help you meet your goals with a unique, targeted and individualized approach.

Dr. Amy Sprole and Dr. Joseph Spaniol are board-certified, plastic and reconstructive surgeons. New to PSC Wellness and Weight Loss — but not new to the medical field — is Kate Rutschman, a board-certified nurse practitioner. Kate has more than 17 years of nursing experience and looks forward to helping you on your wellness and weight loss journey. Kate says, “I used the skinny shot (semaglutide), and I love my results. When you work with me, I understand what you’re going through.

If diet and exercise have left you frustrated each time you step on the scale, these weight loss treatments may be just what you’re looking for. Each of these is performed by either Dr. Joseph Spaniol or Dr. Amy Sprole. Orbera is a weight-loss balloon that helps patients eat less. It’s a safe, minimally invasive, non-permanent, incision-free, weight-loss balloon that includes ongoing support. Endoscopic Suture Gastroplasty (ESG) is minimally invasive. We take a normal, large, stretchy stomach and tighten it into a narrow sleeve shape, so patients eat less to feel satisfied. ESG also comes with aftercare support. Transoral Outlet Reduction (TORe) is a minimally invasive procedure for patients who regain weight after gastric bypass surgery. Patients may lose weight and maintain their weight loss years after surgery.

Medication-Assisted Weight Loss Semaglutide (the skinny shot) suppresses your appetite, increases your energy levels and helps you lose weight. We also include Contrave, Phentermine and others. For all patients after a weight loss procedure, it is important to make a commitment to a healthier lifestyle to ensure long-term success.

A Twist on Balloons

Dwain Williams crafted this Beauty and Beast costume out of balloons. Written by John Huthmacher / Photography by Amy Palser

El Dorado Man Inflates Smiles Wherever He Goes When it comes to creating balloon sculptures, El Dorado resident Dwain Williams isn’t one to clown around. For nearly half a century, the 72-year-old has been creating balloon art for kids from 1 to 92, enjoying a modest living by frequenting popular tourist destinations in Europe, Mexico and across the U.S. to make ends meet and people smile. He has entertained at schools, festivals, parties, retirement homes and nonprofit events, eliciting childlike delight with every design. And while the self-taught balloon bender was initially introduced to his craft by a circus clown at age 24, he prefers letting his blow-up creations generate the happiness to putting on a self-absorbed show behind a painted face and clown nose. 26

“I tried being a clown, but I really just liked the balloon aspect of it,” Williams said. “I like being silly with kids and making them laugh. I’m always happy to do it when I can.” Though he doesn’t globe-hop anymore, he still garners a fair number of invitations to entertain at birthday parties and other special events around town, relying on business cards, word-ofmouth exchanges, and the kudos of niece Amy Highmoor — with whom he shares a home — to get the word out. “I’ll take care of him until the day he dies,” Highmoor said. “He’s one of the most amazing humans I’ve ever experienced in my life.” Armed with balloons at all times, he leaps at the chance to pull together a three-balloon sea turtle or other balloon sculpture for children and seniors alike, whether it be on his part-time job as food delivery driver or during a random encounter at a store, park, restaurant or anywhere people may be.

FEBRUARY 2024 · splurgemag.com

“It’s kind of whatever happens,” he said. “My whole life I did the tourist places and people would come up to me. I never had to pursue a job. Now I hand out (business) cards.” His creations vary in scope from one to 1,000 or more balloons and cover a diverse range of subject matter that includes a 12-foot tall SpongeBob SquarePants figure, Beauty and the Beast attire, gingerbread house, cartoon and superhero characters and other masterpieces. Creating his designs on the fly, he aims to honor all requests, viewing each as his latest conquest. “I like the mathematical figuring out of the proportions and angles,” he said. “I see it from a very mathematical geometric point of view.” Though he deals with autism, Williams dismisses his Asperger’s syndrome condition as mild at best. Nevertheless, Highmoor said she admires his ability to rise above his autistic challenges and couldn’t be prouder of him or how his balloon creations continue to spread joy to those who receive them. “He’s just like a kid,” she said. “He’s so good at what he does. There isn’t a day when a balloon (figure) isn’t made for somebody. That’s something he looks forward to every day. “Once he was in McDonald’s and asked a 4-year-old if she would like a balloon. Turns out she was with Make-A-Wish waiting on their representatives. Her family didn’t realize he wasn’t with them! Another time he brought his dog to the vet and made a balloon for the receptionist’s child.” Working primarily for tips hasn’t made him a rich man in his chosen vocation. Even so, he continues to derive pleasure from what he believes is his true calling in life. His no-child-left behind mantra reveals the true motivation behind his craft. “He normally doesn’t charge for what he does,” Highmoor said. “If he does an event for a company or birthday party, he’ll take a stipend, but he mostly does it all by donations. Every child gets a balloon, whether their parents give a donation or not. That’s just who he is. It’s what makes him special.”

His willingness to teach others that which he learned on his own has served to further the cause of balloon artistry among those who have encountered his many sessions, Highmoor said. “He does two things at parties: teach classes and make balloons,” she said. “My daughter Serenity (now 16 years old) learned to make a 10-balloon octopus at age 3, then at age 4 taught classes of 50 children how to make them.” His friendship with local fire blower and juggler Lynx Robinson, 28, has evolved into an unlikely partnership of sorts, bringing them together on projects around town. “I call her my granddaughter,” Williams said. “She wanted to learn balloons and now does events with me. I’m excited to have her joining me. She takes some of the pressure off on the bigger gigs.” Despite dealing with bouts of arthritis and other age-related ailments, he intends to continue working his craft for as long as he is able. The reward of smiling faces makes each endeavor worthwhile, he said. “I’m always happy to do it,” he said. “I used to blow up 1,000 balloons in a day. Now I do maybe 100. I just do whatever comes along. “Just seeing the kids happy is satisfying. I also do a lot of volunteering at nursing homes. I’m happy to do whatever I can.”

Leap for Joy

5 Fun Things to Do With Your Extra Day

Leap Year is once again upon us! Many countries and cultures across the world have their own way of celebrating this day. For Wichitans wondering what they can do to commemorate this gem of a day, maybe 2024 is the year to start a new tradition, with an epic tour of the city. With every kind of picture-perfect spot from the many city parks and zoos to botanical gardens, a plethora of original restaurants, a thriving brewery and coffee shop scene, and many amazing and unique historical sites, here are some fantastic ways to try something new this leap day. Wichita has many must-see spots and murals. Jemelle Holopirek of Visit Wichita suggests a quick tribute stop at the original Keeper of the Plains. Then, after seeing the original, why not troop around the city and find all the mini tributes? Of course, many of the artistic tributes are in mural form, alongside some other astounding displays. Leap day is the perfect chance to discover all the accessible art Wichita has to offer.

B-29 Doc Hangar Photography by Visit Wichita

There’s something truly special about a day that comes once every four years. Why not use this special day to visit some of Wichita’s best gift shops, such as Nifty Nuthouse, Lavender Winks, The Spice Merchant, Clifton Collective and many more. Whether this is your first or 50th time visiting these shops, give yourself permission to be like a kid in a candy shop, and go all out! Looking for a little bit of inspiration to complete your Leap Day? Lucky for you, there are plenty of museums and other fun learning opportunities in Wichita. Holopirek encourages Wichitans to “get a dose of nostalgia” from the Pizza Hut Museum, located on the Wichita State University campus. Then, why not make a visit to the Museum of World Treasures in Old Town, Exploration Place, or any of the other local museums; this is the perfect day and way to learn something new and get out into the community.

Nifty Nuthouse Photography by Visit Wichita

After your museum tour, maybe you’ll feel inspired to try that new hobby or explore that new interest you’ve been thinking about for a while. Lucky for you, Wichita has plenty of unique hobby spots. Holopirek suggests some really special attractions, including Karg Art Glass and Infinity Glass to inspire your crafty side, or the B-29 Doc Hangar and Education Center or the Stearman Field Bar & Grill in Benton for the inner child who wants to learn how to fly. Last but not least, why not begin your day with a cup of coffee and end it with a beer run? There’s nothing like a perfectly brewed coffee to fuel a day of adventures. Then, when the adventuring is done, grab a drink at your favorite brewery. Holopirek provides two convenient maps of some of the best spots for brews — whether coffee or beer — in Wichita. Whatever direction you go — whether it’s learning something new, exploring both new and familiar places, or simply relaxing with the perfect drink — don’t let this leap day pass you by. You won’t get another one for four years! 30

Wichita Woman Relishing Life without Painkillers Sharon Ford-Fitchett spent over a decade of her life in a fog while she received high doses of prescription opiates from her physician — a man currently serving a 30-year federal prison sentence. “Those were horrible years,” says the 59-year-old Wichita mother and grandmother. “My kids said I was mean; I had an ‘I-don’t-care’ attitude. But it all came to a head in 2004.” That’s when Ford-Fitchett, taking high doses of OxyContin, morphine and Xanax, deposited a fraudulent $180,000 check in her bank account and went on a spending and giving spree. She bought a pickup truck and motorcycle for her husband and another pickup truck for a friend; purchased 225 Christmas turkeys for two homeless shelters; and made a $70,000 donation to Wichita Children’s Home.

“The only reason the judge only gave me 6 weeks in federal prison was because I didn’t spend one penny on myself.” – Sharon Ford-Fitchett Ford-Fitchett said she felt like a totally different person once she got off all painkillers with the help of methadone and then Suboxone. She knows she was a terrible mother, she says, but now is proud to call herself an amazing grandmother, taking care of her younger grandkids every other weekend. She tries to deal with her lingering physical pain with natural remedies like soaking in the tub. Putting her attention on others — she was her father’s caregiver before he died last September — helps too. Her husband’s unexpected death eight years ago was a low point, she said, and her children worried she might go back to painkillers. But she says she never will. “I still miss my husband like it was yesterday, but I knew I could never go back to that life. It wasn’t worth it.”

Federal Prison “I had the feds and U.S. Marshals at my door, and I was looking at 32 years in prison,” she said. “The only reason the judge only gave me 6 weeks in federal prison was because I didn’t spend one penny on myself. “I wouldn’t have done any of it if I was of sound mind; [under the influence of drugs] I flat didn’t care what happened to me.” It was in jail that Ford-Fitchett first realized she had a drug problem. Being off medication for the first time in over 10 years revealed just how severe her addiction was. It masked her pain but also masked her personality and enjoyment of life. The withdrawals were awful, she said; even worse was realizing the heartache she had caused her family. “When I watched my husband cry and saw my kids have to defend me — that their mom had done all of this damage — that was so hard,” she said. “I did a lot of damage to my kids, to my grandbabies, to my marriage, to myself, and to the people who loved me. With all the guilt, I wanted to lay in a hole.” Part of her parole included drug treatment, and that’s how FordFitchett met Dr. Greg Lakin, who now operates Center for Change drug treatment center in Wichita. “He’s the kindest person,” she said of Lakin. “He’ll go to bat for you, but at the same time he’ll stand his ground.”

Doctor’s Orders Ford-Fitchett said it was the mid-’90s when her physician in Haysville began prescribing her drugs to treat chronic pain she was experiencing from multiple sclerosis, a knee replacement and a hysterectomy. The doctor and his wife were both sentenced in 2010 for illegally distributing prescription painkillers at their pain management clinic where 68 patients died of drug overdoses.

Four of Sharon Ford-Fitchett’s 15 grandkids are pictured. The 59-year-old Wichita woman is enjoying life free from painkillers that masked her personality and enjoyment of life.

But Ford-Fitchett said she doesn’t blame her doctor for her troubles. “You have to take care of your own health,” she said. “I knew I didn’t need all of that. I never, ever meant to get that way. But at the same time I never did anything to not get that way.”

of the store. We have an option for every budget and occasion — whether you are celebrating a friend’s birthday, an anniversary or getting engaged. We carry a broad range of fashion jewelry if you are looking for a statement piece to pull a look together or an everyday pair of earrings. Some of the jewelry brands are legacy brands that have been in the store for years, including Tiger Mountain, Saraswati and Ayala Bar to name a few. We also have new brands, including Porter Lyons with their diamond and gold stud earring designs, Brigitte Regula, who makes romantic woven stone necklaces with glass lockets, and Theia with delicate pieces that make statements all on their own.

Q. What treasures will customers find at Aspen Boutique for that special someone for Valentine’s Day?

A. To make shopping easy, we have pulled a special selection

of Valentine’s Day jewelry that spans all the styles, including some beautiful sterling lockets, Pyrrha necklaces, heart-shaped earrings and travel jewelry boxes.

Q. Since February is the month of romance, what special sales

or promotions will Aspen Boutique be offering in celebration of love?

A. From February 3-17, Aspen will be running a progressive winter sale in celebration of the month of galentines and valentines, which includes a discount up to 30% off on clothing, shoes and non-jewelry accessories. Additionally, all jewelry, including estate fine jewelry, fashion jewelry and vintage jewelry will be 10% off storewide.

Aspen Boutique’s newest large collection is our estate fine jewelry with over 300 pre-owned pieces, including Rolex watches for men and women, and a selection of jewelry from the early 1900s to present day, featuring diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and even the occasional rare gemstones such as alexandrite! Lastly, we have an extensive collection of local jewelry artisans that we love to show off at Aspen Boutique.

Q. Tell us more about your local jewelry designers. A. Currently, we carry about 10 local jewelry designers, including Rocky’s Hardwear by Rachelle Ablah, Essential Elements by Leah, Judy Lawson, Lamzy Divey, Amy Lea, Collin Allen, Val Brown, Rose Magnolia Designs, I Am Threads by Rebecca Simpson and Art on Tap by Greg Gifford. Their creations are quite unique. Some are amazing metalsmiths and others handcraft their pieces with colorful beads, leather and wood.

Q. Estate, vintage and antique jewelry are timeless pieces that recently have become quite popular. What are some of the unique pieces in your Estate Fine Jewelry Collection?

A. Without question, our estate fine jewelry is where the serious bling is in Aspen Boutique. Popular items are the pre-owned Rolex watches, which have become difficult to find, and our selection of diamond engagement rings features old European cut diamonds that sparkle like nothing else! We also have favorite designer pieces, including Chanel, Cartier, Tiffany & Co. and Harry Winston. It is easy for everyone to pick out something that they love in this section of the store!

Celebrating Fettuccine Alfredo Written by Julie Hying

One of Italy’s Most Romantic Dishes Americans will recognize National Fettuccine Alfredo Day on Feb. 7, 2024. The first public acknowledgement of the holiday surfaced in Jan. 2005 in the Akron Beacon Journal and has been celebrated and written about ever since. The simple yet sophisticated dish was created in Rome, Italy, in 1914 by restaurateur Alfredo Di Lelio as his wife struggled through her pregnancy with a dangerously diminished appetite. Di Lelio created an elegant dish featuring noodles, parmesan cheese, and butter to appeal to and nourish his wife. Alfredo’s fettuccine became world-renowned in the 1920s after American actors Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford tasted it at Di Lelio’s ristorante Alfredo alla Scrofa during their honeymoon in Rome. They brought the recipe back to the United States, paving the way for fettuccine Alfredo’s entry into American cuisine. With the rich addition of heavy cream, its popularity has grown in the United States, yet is served more exclusively in its birth city at the original Alfredo alla Scrofa, as well as pleasing patrons at Il Vero Alfredo, the Italian restaurant owned by Alfredo Di Lelio’s descendants. Complementary to a wide variety of proteins and flavors that meld beautifully with the simple yet delicious dish, it’s a perfect choice to seek out on Valentine’s Day at local Italian restaurants. For a more intimate evening, this Valentine’s favorite can be easily prepared and enjoyed at home.

Decadent Drinks and Desserts for Valentine’s Day Written by Julie Hying

Any winter night can be made special with good company and conversation. Dining out or a meal prepared at home ensures delicious dishes to enjoy with someone special or a group of fun friends. This year on Valentine’s Day, consider ending an enjoyable evening with decadent drinks or a delectable dessert.

Berry Kiss

Fabulous Fudge Cake

1 oz. Titos 1 oz. Blue Chair Bay coconut rum ½ oz. Cointreau 3 oz. cranberry juice or diet cranberry juice 2 oz. Fresca Fill a tall, clear glass ¾ full of ice. Pour all ingredients over ice and stir for 20 seconds. Enjoy immediately. Note: This recipe can be doubled (as many times as needed) and prepared in a large pitcher for a group. If making a larger batch, keep chilled in the refrigerator.

Red Velvet Valentine

1 ¼ cups granulated sugar, divided 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ cup unsweetened Hershey’s cocoa powder, divided 2 tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt ½ cup milk ⁄ ₃ cup unsalted butter, melted 1 ½ tsp. vanilla extract ½ cup packed brown sugar 1 ¼ cups hot water Vanilla ice cream, if desired for serving Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat a pot of water on the stove to very hot (just under a simmer). In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine ¾ cup of the granulated sugar, flour, ¼ cup of the cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk, melted butter and vanilla and mix until smooth. Pour the batter into a lightly greased 2-quart ceramic dish or a 9-inch square baking pan (if it’s a non-stick pan, no need to grease it) and spread evenly.

2 Tbsp. Godiva chocolate syrup ¼ c. vanilla cake vodka ¼ c. creme de cacao 6 Tbsp. half and half 6 Tbsp. heavy whipping cream 5–6 drops red food coloring Red sugar for the rims of the glasses

Chill the vodka, creme de cacao, half and half and heavy whipping cream for at least one hour. Prepare two plates, one with chocolate syrup and one with red sprinkles. Dip the rim of each glass in chocolate syrup and then red sugar. Then fill each glass with a chilled cocktail. Makes 2–4 drinks, depending on the size of the glasses chosen.

White Chocolate Bliss 1 ½ oz. white chocolate liqueur 1 ½ oz. clear creme de cacao ½ oz. vanilla vodka 2 ½ oz. half and half Ghirardelli chocolate syrup

In a small bowl, stir together the remaining ½ cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, remaining ¼ cup cocoa and mix well. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in your dish or pan. Pour the hot water over the top — but do not stir! Bake for 35–40 minutes if using a glass dish (or 30–35 minutes if using a metal pan) or until the center is almost set. Remove your dish from the oven and allow it to stand for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, spoon the cake into individual serving bowls — making sure to spoon the fudgy sauce from the bottom of the pan over the top of the cake. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired and serve immediately.

Place 4 cubes of ice in a shaker. Add all the ingredients and shake for one minute. In a chilled martini glass, drizzled chocolate syrup into glass while turning it to create a chocolate ribbon swirl effect. Pour all ingredients into martini glass. Top with chocolate shavings or chocolate sprinkles if desired. Serve immediately. 62

Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as the famous reggae singer in “Bob Marley: One Love,” in theaters Feb. 14.

Upcoming Movies, February 2024 Written by Levi Schwertfeger

Although it is a month full of love for our significant other, everyone could use a break from the chocolates and letters to go and experience a new story in theaters. Be sure to catch all of the new fun, musical and inspiring films this month as we get ready to move into spring!

Madame Web

Sesame Street

Feb.14, 2024, (PG-13), directed by S.J. Clarkson

Feb.19, 2024, directed by Jonathan Krisel

The story about one of Marvel Universe’s great heroines, Madame Web, follows Cassandra Webb (played by Dakota Johnson), a paramedic in New York, as she discovers her very unique ability to see into the future. She will make an interesting team with three young women, who have very important futures, to fight against Ezekiel Sims (played by Tahar Rahim), a spider-person that may share Cassandra’s gift.

Although there is no available trailer to watch at the moment, we can all be excited to see one of our childhood favorites come back in theaters with an absolutely all-star cast. This movie has gone through many delays and postponements, but we can hope that’s all behind us, and we’ll see the movie this February in theaters. This musical stars Anne Hathaway, Bo Burnham and Chance the Rapper.

Bob Marley: One Love

Ordinary Angels

Feb.14, 2024, (PG-13), directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green

Feb.23, 2024, (PG), directed by Jon Gunn

The reggae legend is coming to theaters. There are few people who do not know Bob Marley (played by Kingsley Ben-Adir) — but how many people truly know the full story of his life and mission? In this film you’ll be alongside Bob Marley as he tries to spread his message of love and unity in a world of hate and separation. Needless to say, not everyone wanted him to continue, and would go to extreme measures to stop him. “Don’t worry about a thing ...” Marley’s message made a bigger impact then he probably knew.

This movie was originally set to release in October of 2023, but was postponed so as not to compete with the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour (which was very smart). Based on a true story, this movie lets us experience a heartwarming and suspenseful fight for a young girl’s life as she battles illness. Set in Kentucky during its worst snow storm, Sharon Stevens (played by Hilary Swank), who is a recovering alcoholic, tries to find a purpose for her life to help battle her addictions. Some would say that God gave her an opportunity to be a positive change in a young family’s life. She will do whatever it takes to finish what she started.

Mervin Schrag

BV Power Marketing Agent of BV Power solar energy Written by Alexis Evans

Make the Switch with Mervin Mervin Schrag is here to answer all the questions you didn’t know you had about solar panels and power. This self-described “semi-retired” BV Power marketing agent with a yen for meeting and talking to new people is excited to educate others about the benefits of solar panels and power. He sees opportunity for growth on this important topic, and he’s ready to change Wichita, one home at a time. Though he retired from his full-time job several years ago, Mervin is passionate about solar energy and feels strongly about spreading the message.

Q. How did you get started with BV Power? A. I became fully certified as a marketing agent with BV

Power about two years ago. I am good friends with the owners of BV Power, and that relationship led to me starting my certification. The other reason I got into it is because it lets me work with people. My entire corporate career has centered around interaction with people, and this job allowed me to continue that interaction and help educate people on an important topic. I’ve made so many friends through this job; it’s become a true blessing.

Q. What is the full scope of your services? A. I work with the contractors who manufacture and

install solar on the homes and businesses, and I use marketing surveys to determine what each individual customer needs. I create the contract, find out the needs of each individual customer, then I send it to the engineers and installers. They in turn design and install the system. I am also certified to work in more states than just Kansas, which is especially helpful, as much of my business relies on referrals and building relationships. As an example, I currently have ongoing projects in multiple states!

Two, many don’t realize that panels can be used on all building types: homes (homeowners only), large and small commercial businesses, churches, nonprofits, schools, farms — and if you’re not sure, just ask! Three, the government has created many incentives to install solar onto homes and businesses, including grants, tax credits and other compensations that are designed to motivate people to make this move. The electric grid is in disarray, and the use of solar helps take pressure off the grid. My company is currently creating its own incentive in which we will be able to turn green energy credits that a residence or a small or medium business might generate into compensation.

Q. What’s an aspect of your business you are particularly proud of?

A. The chance to educate has made a huge impact on me:

first in how solar positively affects your power, and also the way it saves your budget in the short and long term by fighting yearly inflation caused by the rising costs of electricity.

Q. What is something you wish everyone knew about installing solar in their home or business?

A. There are actually three things I wish more people

knew. One, there are different levels of quality of solar panels, and I take great pride in the fact that BV Power only furnishes the best that’s available. The companies and designers we contract with all have many years of experience and knowledge to back them and are considered some of the best in their field.

All Fired Up Today we get to talk about one of my most favorite features of the season: the fireplace. A fireplace is something that takes us all the way back to the original fireplace, otherwise known as a fire pit. From the beginning of time, fire has provided warmth, protection from predators, and a means of cooking food for humans. Even in modern times, we’ve found a way to adopt the ambiance, look and feel of this fire into our homes for our day-to-day lives. If you ask yourself the “why,” here is the truth about it: A fireplace can be a place of gathering, solitude, peace and warmth (literally and figuratively) — all things we desire in our homes. To me a fireplace is a nonnegotiable, whether I am buying, renting or leasing a home. It amazes me how something as simple as a few logs and flames can open up one’s mind and heart with just the look and feel. I have always described the ritual of a simple cup of coffee near a fireplace as a hug that wraps its way around my soul.

This black stone fireplace is a prime example of not being afraid to change your design if your original vision doesn’t pan out. Once this stone was installed, we thought it looked a little drab. It turns out that all it needed was a coat of this powerful hue.

While thinking about fireplaces, I spoke with local interior designer Megan McGraw of McGraw Interior Design, who also works together with local builder Paul Gray of Paul Gray Homes. Her thoughts and planning behind the design and build of the fireplaces in these Paul Gray homes in Wichita are described below. I hope you will find inspiration in these photos from some of Megan’s designs. And at some point, whether you have an indoor or outdoor fireplace or fire pit, I hope you feel the same warm hug wrap its way around you.

Creatively yours,

We wanted a unique way to divide the main living room from the flex space in this home, without completely separating the rooms from each other. We designed this fireplace feature wall in a way that allows the homeowners to have a fireplace and TV in both rooms, while also displaying their favorite decorative items.

Whether it be hair, fashion or home, ombré is on trend this year. We wanted to show buyers that you can make a statement on a budget, and that’s exactly what we did with this blue ombré fireplace feature wall.

Ledgestone is a great option for anyone looking for a more transitional aesthetic that won’t “trend out” over time. We coupled that with these frosted windows to create a unique feature wall that brings warmth and a subtle glow to the space.
