1-year-Old Winner “JiJi” Is All Smiles and Blue Eyes Written by Paige Feikert

It’s Tuesday evening in the Sangha household and happy screams and giggles are erupting from the kitchen. That’s where 1-year-old Jiyana is chasing her older brother Dilan, driving circles around the kitchen island in their toy cars. “Our toes have been run over multiple times by those wheels,” said Dr. Monica Khurana jokingly, mother of the two toddlers. “Our house is very loud.” It’s the makings of an already close connection between the siblings. Whether they are riding down the slides together at one of Dilan’s favorite parks or playing chef and sous chef and whipping up pretend jalebi — an Indian dessert and a nod to their father’s nickname for their mother — Dilan and Jiyana are inseparable. “She’s very eager to do everything he does; she’s his little shadow,” Monica said. Jiyana, nicknamed “JiJi,” is the winner of SPLURGE! Magazine’s 2023 Our Cover, Your Kid contest, and her bright blue eyes are an engaging welcome to this month’s issue. It’s a feeling of coming full circle, said Monica. “I always read SPLURGE! growing up and now my daughter is on the cover. It’s really just so fun and exciting,” she said. At just 3 years old, Dilan, who posed in the studio with his sister, is a great role model; he’s compassionate and caring, and always thinking of others, said his parents, Monica and Manroj Sangha. Meanwhile, Jiyana has a smile that can turn anyone’s day around. “She’s a social butterfly when she’s out and about with us,” Monica said. “She loves to greet everyone with a ‘hi’ and a cheeky smile with her two little teeth peeking through.” At 12 months old it’s hard to tell what Jiyana is most drawn to, but there’s no denying her love for music, and her parents say that could run in the family. “It’s a family of music,” Manroj said. “Monica’s

grandpa has sung his entire life from his college days until now, and Monica inherited that. Music is a big component of their lives.” Jiyana and Dilan’s great-grandparents, Dr. Harish and Ved Minocha, are in their 90s and live close by in Manhattan. The first time he met Jiyana, Dr. Minocha sang her a song, and he’s continued to sing the same song to her during every visit. Now, Jiyana recognizes the song — their special song. “She loves singing and clapping with her great-grandfather, just like she’s doing in her cover photo,” Monica said. Jiyana and Dilan love to spend time with their great-grandparents and their grandparents, Dr. Vijay and Meena Khurana, who live just down the street. Jiyana and Dilan share a close bond with their grandparents — a bond that taught Monica and Manroj that it truly takes a village to raise kids. Spending time with their families is something the kids and their parents are looking forward to this holiday season — a season that means a little something extra for the Sangha family. “Holidays are special for everybody — but my wife and I met and had our first dates around the holiday season, and our love flourished around Christmas,” Manroj said. “And now to have our kids born around the holidays, it’s honestly the best four months that we look forward to.” It may be a matter of fate that both Dilan and Jiyana were born in December and November, respectively, two more special reasons for the family to celebrate this time of year. “We’re truly blessed with the family that we have, and my relationship with Monica, and for everything, it’s really a blessing,” Manroj said.

Bright Ideas for Whiter Teeth

Dr. Joseph Houlik

Genetics, age, diet, and habits all have an influence on the color of our teeth. Genetics refers to tooth size, shape, enamel thickness and the color of your dentin. Put your best smile forward with this full spectrum of ideas, from over-the-counter products to veneers.

Is it true the color of your teeth will typically darken over time? Yes. Over time the enamel — the outer layer of the tooth — thins, which allows the deeper and darker layer of the tooth to show through more, making the teeth appear darker. This is, of course, in addition to stains accumulating from day-to-day life.

What is teeth whitening? Teeth whitening is the removal of stains and discolorations from the enamel and dentin. So how do we get whiter teeth? It depends on your expectations and how much whiter you’re trying to go. 1) Maintainers: Whitening Toothpastes, Rinses and Natural Remedies I like to call these products maintainers because they typically will help you maintain the current shade you are at with some improvements over time. Most of these products work by scrubbing away and breaking up the surface stains on your teeth. Examples: Baking Soda, Coconut Oil, Charcoal Products, Crest Whitening Rinse and Colgate Optic White. Is one toothpaste better than the other? Studies suggest that among toothpastes marketed as whitening. They are all about equally effective and will remove more stains than your traditional non-whitening toothpaste. Can they damage your teeth? When used in moderation and as instructed, these products are generally very safe. Charcoal toothpastes are known to be more abrasive, which can create more surface roughness, and research suggests limited use at this time. 2) Boosters: Whitening Trays, Strips, Pens and Gels These are products you can typically purchase over the counter or from your provider. They will be the most effective products you can use to whiten your smile without dental treatment. Most of these products work by breaking up the stain particles and the active whitening ingredients are in higher doses and therefore more effective. Examples: Opalescence Go, Crest Supreme Whitening Strips, Gel Syringes and the Phillips Zoom Pen.

3) Veneers Veneers are very thin ceramic restorations we place on teeth to achieve the results we want. They allow the patient and dentist to work together to custom design your new teeth color, size and other details. Veneers can be a great option for individuals who have different colored teeth due to a combination of fillings, crowns and natural teeth; those who have deeper intrinsic staining that traditional whitening agents won’t be effective against or anyone looking for a true smile transformation.

Before

After

Do you have to grind my teeth down for veneers? Typically not. Assuming your teeth are in the correct position, veneers can be done with little to no grinding, preserving your natural tooth structure. How long do veneers last? Assuming they’re taken care of and done properly, studies suggest that around 85 percent of veneers should last longer than 15 years. So which one is best? It varies depending on the patient. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I always encourage patients to try different teeth whitening and professional products to see if they get the results they want before other treatment options.

Enticing CD Rates Current promotional CD rates at banks and credit unions are tempting compared to the stock market, where there is still so much uncertainty today. After all, we are at the highest CD rates since 2009. In the early 1980s, CD rates averaged around 18%. That may sound like “the good ol’ days,” but you have to remember that inflation was at about 13% during that time. The 1980s also began with the worst recession in the U.S. since the Great Depression and unemployment rates reached as high as 11%. Should you consider investing in CDs again since the stock market has struggled over the past two years? Perhaps so, but there are other opportunities to consider as well.

PROMOTIONAL RATES

We are currently in an inverted yield curve environment whereby short-term CDs pay a higher interest rate than long-term CDs. This means that if you have been holding on to some cash due to today’s economic uncertainties, then you may be well positioned to take advantage of these promotional rates. But, understand that these rates probably won’t last and may not be available when it’s time to renew that one-year CD you’re considering. For example, when you compare rates at financial institutions, you’ll find that these promotional rates usually only apply to 11- or 12-month CDs. If you inquire about the rate of a five-year CD at the same institution, you’ll find that the rates are closer to 1%. Why is that? I believe it is because banks know that these interest rates aren’t going to last and they aren’t willing to commit to longer terms when interest rates are likely to decline over the next year or so.

ALTERNATIVES TO CDS

Many people forget that the insurance industry has fixedrate financial products; the rates on these products are usually a little higher than the promotional rates offered at banks, and they will commit for a longer term, guaranteeing that you will get the current rates for a longer period of time. These fixed-rate products are called MYGAs — Multi Year Guaranteed Annuities. They are old-style annuities that date back to the early 1900s. Current rates on a 5-year MYGA are at about 6%. One additional benefit of using MYGAs is that the interest is tax-deferred, so you will not get a 1099-INT statement until you cash out the MYGA. By renewing with another MYGA or other annuity product, you can continue to defer taxes on the gains. This tax deferral may help your tax situation, especially if you are near a tax-rate bracket limit. 14

EXIT THE STOCK MARKET?

It might be tempting to pull your investments out of the stock market and put them into bank products at today’s rates. But rather than pull the investments out of the market completely, consider a different approach inside the investment portfolio. For example, you could implement an investment strategy that mimics a money market account: short-term holdings that are very liquid and rival bank money market rates. This way, when the market enters a new growth phase, the money is already in the investment account and can easily be redeployed into stocks and bonds. And, don’t forget that you can also get access to FDIC-insured CDs inside of your brokerage account. Utilizing current CD rates in your brokerage account gives you more flexibility to quickly change overall investment styles inside of your portfolio as rates change.

BOTTOM LINE

Bank CDs may certainly be a good option for some of your money, but understand that these rates probably won’t last for long. You could very well be faced with the return of dismal CD rates in a year or so when the CD matures. Don’t make longterm financial decisions based on short-term opportunities. If you are dead set on using CDs for part of your portfolio, then consider doing so inside of your brokerage account, so the funds can be redeployed easily at maturity. Finally, if you are a conservative investor, consider financial products from the insurance industry to further diversify your portfolio.

A Launching Pad for People With Disabilities Written by Caroline Jones

Shepherd’s Way Brings Possibility

Ben French, founder of Shepherd’s Way, first met his friend Dallas through Young Life Capernaum at Wichita State University. At the time Dallas was 16 and living in a homeless shelter with a diagnosis of autism and severe intellectual and developmental disabilities. Dallas seemed to have no viable options for long-term sustainable housing, so French offered to live with him in a two-bedroom apartment in downtown Wichita. “We just started the process of learning to do life and learning to live independently, working on things like remembering to brush your teeth every day, and take a shower, and do your laundry every week,” French said. Against what seemed like insurmountable cognitive barriers, Dallas learned and retained these life skills, instilling in him a sense of confidence that helped him “build good friendships, build community and find purpose in his life.” His amazing testimony inspired French and others to create a four-phase model to help other individuals and families “who are worried about the future for their child.” In Phase 1, Shepherd’s Way employees focus on career development and preparation for 6 to 12 months. “We do really deep career exploration dives, and we do a lot of work to equip them with the skills to reverse the turnover rate for people with disabilities so that they can have sustainable employment,” French said. Phases 2, 3 and 4 move these young men into increasingly independent living situations, starting in a house with two program participants and two peer mentors, and ending in a house with four program participants and no mentors. “Our heart has always been that we want to be a launching pad, not a landing spot, for people,” French said. Shepherd’s Way provides three concrete ways to help support their ministry in Wichita. Because they serve “an unresourced gap in our community,” Shepherd’s Way is 100 percent privately funded and fundraises through grants, companies and foundations, corporate sponsorships and individual donors. They also have a real estate investment opportunity where individuals can receive a 5 percent return annually from an investment of at least $100,000, allowing “the capital to buy houses to serve these guys.” In addition, Shepherd’s Way will be launching Wichita’s first volunteerbased rideshare platform. “Transportation is a major barrier to employment and community engagement for people with disabilities,” French said. “Plug in by becoming a volunteer driver. This could be one ride a month, one ride a week, 3 rides a week … whatever best fits the individual.” 16

What started as a meaningful friendship with Dallas has grown into what French sees as an essential service to the greater Wichita community. “I think what we view as a disability is maybe a gift in that, there are certain things based on our cognitive levels that we may worry or stress about, or we might be more inclined to judge people because of a greater level of cognitive understanding, and what I’ve seen with these guys is there’s such a freedom from that. There’s no judgment from people with disabilities. There’s an unconditional nature to their relationships and friendships in a way that I believe Jesus looked at people. They’re really necessary pieces of God’s kingdom, and it’s more a necessity for us to empower them to be in the community blessing people than it is what we’re doing for them.”

Fighting for Her Family and Her Sobriety Wichita Mom Triumphs Over 20-Year Opioid Addiction

want to be anymore, and I knew a lot of that was the addiction, because it was eating at me so much. I knew I could be a better person for my kids, myself and my family if I was sober.” Daydra described the initial six-day detox process as a horrible emotional roller coaster, but she said she would do every second of it again to experience the freedom of sobriety. “That sixth day that I finally pulled out of it, I came up the stairs from the basement, and it was like a whole new world, like I could see the light and I felt light in my soul again. I hadn’t felt that way for probably 20 years. It was just such a beautiful thing.” The past seven months of her sobriety have come with more heartache than she expected. To provide for her children and to remain clean, Daydra was forced to walk away from her house, her family, and everything in her old life for a time, seeking out a sober living community and a regular, consistent job. During this time, she prayed for the opportunity to regain her children from an ex-boyfriend, continuing in her sobriety for them.

Daydra Haunschild with daughters Elliana (left) and Shea

“It was a very rapid process of addiction. I mean, I knew I was an addict … I just didn’t realize I was an addict on drugs, too. I thought it was just alcohol.” Daydra Haunschild was born in Garden City, Kansas but has lived in Wichita since age 15. By the time she moved to Wichita, she had tried alcohol and had witnessed her older brothers smoking marijuana. Alcohol consumption quickly turned to opioids, heroin and fentanyl, and she said that battling addiction for almost 20 years took more from her life than it gave. “I pretty much lost everything,” she said. “I lost my dignity, my respect for anybody, my respect for myself. But it’s crazy the miracles that happen when you take that demon out of your life. That’s kind of how I see it: It was a demon eating at me every day.”

“It’s crazy the miracles that happen when you take that demon out of your life. That’s kind of how I see it: It was a demon eating at me every day.” – former addict Daydra Haunschild

“If something crazy comes at me, I know that I don’t have to use drugs or alcohol. I know that I can face it full force and God’s going to be here with me.’” – former addict Daydra Haunschild “It was hard not having my kids, because I had been there for both of my kids their whole life, and then just having to walk away while I knew he was still using. That was definitely something that kept me on the right path, so I just stayed strong and kept going to meetings, kept going to work, and kept talking to my Higher Power and praying.” For Daydra, finally reuniting with her older daughter, 16-yearold Shea, and baby Elliana was more than worth the four-anda-half months of hardship, and she thanked Dr. Greg Lakin and his team at Center for Change, along with Bel Aire Recovery Center, for getting her where she is today. “I’m very thankful to be sober today, and I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said. “I definitely have a lot of work to do, but they (the Center for Change team) have been a blessing, and I’m ready to go. If something crazy comes at me, I know that I don’t have to use drugs or alcohol. I know that I can face it full force and God’s going to be here with me. Whatever it is, I’m ready to learn and take the right direction in life.”

Her boyfriend at the time got her connected with the Bel Aire Recovery Center, but she sought help from the staff at Bel Aire and at Center for Change because of her kids. “I was just really depressed,” she said. “I was really lost, and I just didn’t 18

Looking Back on a Soaring Year of Eagles in Action Scott Hartley, Class of 1990, Artist, Infinity Art Glass “With all the time you spend with [fellow Scouts and leaders], you really get to know them — especially when you’re out camping. There’s not much distraction out there.” John Rongish, Class of 2020, High school senior, earned 139 merit badges “There are a lot of things you can learn through sports and clubs at school, but there’s a whole lot you’d be missing out on if you didn’t do Scouting. It prepares you for every situation in life.” Devin Hansen, Class of 1978, President and owner, Sunflower Travel “It did form who I am today, helping people plan trips, being detail-oriented, taking phone calls after hours or working on weekends to help a customer. It really does help shape people’s lives.” Bob Gress, Class of 1965, Wildlife photographer “Like so many other parts of life, how well you apply yourself to it is a reflection of what you get out of it. I still talk to those people on a regular basis.” Dane Laughlin, Class of 2009, Director of advanced learning capabilities, Invista (subsidiary of Koch Industries) “If I was going to encourage somebody who was going into Boy Scouts right now, I would let them know the Scouts exist to provide resources for people to learn and excel. Take advantage of all the resources that are provided to the fullest extent, because it can get you a long way.” Quivira Council and Morgan Stanley are proud to bring you Eagle Scouts in Action, a monthly showcase of community leaders who are banding together to make a difference in our community! Dr. Terry Klein

Partner at Wichita Research Facility AMR Written by Caroline Jones

New Study Focuses on Osteoarthritis of the Knee Dr. Terry Klein and his team at AMR believe that you can have a full, energetic life even with osteoarthritis of the knee. He anticipates that participants in this study could see a tremendous impact on their comfort and wellbeing with increased access to effective and safe pain medication for people with osteoarthritis and other chronic inflammatory conditions. Dr. Klein says that participants can also expect to “receive rigorous compensation to accommodate the research requirements and visits.”

Q. What is osteoarthritis of the knee? A. Osteoarthritis of the knee happens when cartilage

in your knee joint breaks down, causing bones to rub together. This results in damaged tissue, which causes the immune system to send cells to protect the area and, by extension, causes inflammation and pain. This is often a result of obesity, frequent stress on the knee, inherited tendencies, and crooked bones or joints.

Q. How would someone know if they are a good candidate for this study?

A. We’re looking for people with moderate to severe

pain from osteoarthritis of the knee, which is very common. About 46 percent of people develop this type of osteoarthritis during their lifetime, and it is most found in men and women ages 40 to 80. Basically, if you’ve ever thought, “I probably have a little arthritis in my knee,” and you have chronic, ongoing pain that is not directly caused by trauma or injury, then you are probably a good candidate for this study.

Q. What will the process look like for participants? A. In this study, we are developing a new chemical that

will quiet down the immune system’s process of sending inflammatory cells to damaged tissue. By reducing inflammation, this chemical will also reduce the pain that’s triggered by inflammation. Over the course of four months, participants will receive weekly injections of the chemical at our clinic. Our purpose will be to prove the chemical’s effectiveness by establishing the correct dosage that should be administered to a patient. This study will only take place at our east clinic location.

22

Q. What do you hope to see from this study? A. You know, we’re really trying to respond to the steady

increase of long-term discomfort in our community by finding more reliable ways to relieve pain. Today, the most common treatment for pain caused by osteoarthritis of the knee is steroids and opioids, and we desperately want to reduce the use of opioids in the clinical sense, because they provide limited relief with serious safety issues and abuse potential. The new chemical also functions globally, which means that it responds to all inflammatory receptors in the body, not just inhibiting those in an osteoarthritic knee. Because of this, our chemical has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of chronic inflammatory, neuropathic, and nerve-generated pain across the body.

Q. Can someone participate if they have a different type of osteoarthritis?

A. While we hope this chemical will have wide-ranging

effects on inflammation and pain reduction, this specific study is only targeted toward people with osteoarthritis of the knee. If you want to help make a difference in medical research, but do not have this type of arthritis, we sincerely thank you for your support and encourage you to keep an eye out for future opportunities to get involved.

How to Participate To participate in AMR’s osteoarthritis clinical trial, call 316.689.6635.

REAL PLASTIC SURGEONS. REAL RESULTS.

Real Patients. Real Results. Our patient had radiofrequency ablation, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, and phlebectomies on both of her legs, and she is delighted with her results.

Explain your journey with vein issues. By Nataliya Biskup, MD, Amy Sprole, MD, and Joseph Spaniol, MD Nousette Jefferson Photography | Instagram: @njeffphoto

Help for Venous Insufficiency and Vein Issues PSC Vein Care Do you have pain, swelling, cramping, bulging veins, leg pressure, changes in skin color, varicose veins, and ulcers in your legs? You are not alone. Painful, unsightly, and often disabling, venous insufficiency causes problems for millions of people.

What is Venous Insufficiency? It happens when the veins in your legs keep blood from flowing back up to your heart. When your valves don’t work well, your veins dilate, widen and stretch. Venous insufficiency can also cause blood to pool and collect in your legs.

What Causes Venous Insufficiency? People who are overweight, have been pregnant, have a family history of the disease, or who have had a leg injury may have venous insufficiency. In addition, people with high blood pressure in their leg veins due to sitting or standing for prolonged periods may experience it. A lack of exercise, smoking, a blood clot or even swelling in the veins close to the skin may lead to venous insufficiency.

Treatment for Venous Insufficiency At PSC Vein Care, we treat venous insufficiency, varicose veins and spider veins, which can be both a cosmetic and medical issue requiring attention. Our experienced staff uses vein mapping to evaluate veins and create a treatment plan. Vein treatment options include the following: • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) uses heat to close the saphenous veins that contribute to varicose veins in the legs. It’s a clinically proven, minimally invasive procedure that treats superficial varicose veins and chronic insufficiency with little or no discomfort and minimal downtime.

PSC Patient: Venous insufficiency runs in my family, and at 40, I knew I needed to deal with it now and not wait until I was older. I had bulging varicose veins on both legs, and a friend of mine referred me to PSC Vein Care. The veins were big, embarrassing and ugly. At the end of each day, my legs were very swollen and tired, and I decided to get treatment.

How were the treatments? PSC Patient: I had treatment in five stages without significant pain or complications. Post-surgery pain was two out of 10 and only lasted a day and a half. Over-the-counter meds relieved any soreness. I was tender for a few weeks, but overall, it was easy. I had expected something worse, but it wasn’t bad at all.

When did you notice a change? PSC Patient: Visually, I noticed a change immediately. Once the bulging veins were gone, my legs were smooth. My swelling went down in about a month.

Are you happy with your results? PSC Patient: Yes! I am so happy. I was self-conscious about my legs, but now I can show my legs and not worry about a road map of spaghetti noodles. The incisions are small, so the scars aren’t very big, and they should all fade away in six months to a year.

Do you have advice for people considering radiofrequency ablation? PSC Patient: If you have vein issues, take care of them now. Don’t wait. Many people, young and old, have vein problems, and there is help. Also, do the calf exercises they recommend and rest your legs as needed.

• With sclerotherapy, we inject your veins with a solution that causes your blood vessels to close. Sclerotherapy is the primary treatment option for spider veins. • Phlebectomy involves removing medium to large varicose veins through tiny skin punctures that don’t require stitches. This procedure is minimally invasive and used for veins we can’t treat with sclerotherapy. If you’re interested in discussing your vein treatment options, your first step is a consultation with one of our vein specialists. Call 316.688.7500 to schedule your appointment.

Plastic surgery involves many choices; the most important is selecting a surgeon you can trust. Expect exceptional results when you have your procedures performed by plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, like Dr. Sprole, Dr. Biskup, and Dr. Spaniol. These specially trained doctors have at least six years of surgical training and experience, with a minimum of three years of plastic surgery.

From Invite to Insta-Worthy Entrance

The Holiday Dress Code Dilemma Written by Lauren “L” Mercado

The neighborhood street wears the night like a black velvet holiday dress adorned with embroidered candy canes and sequined Christmas lights. The darkness is broken only by the subtle glow of streetlights and the twinkle of decorative lights trimming nearby houses. With a slow approach, you navigate toward the home of your holiday party host. Searching for an open spot along the road, you ease your car forward, ensuring that the carefully chosen hostess gift doesn’t tumble onto the passenger floor mat. Before stepping out of your car, you steal a glance in the mirror, making sure there’s no lipstick on your teeth and every curl is perfectly in place. Satisfied, you unbuckle your seat belt and grab your gift and wine bottle, managing to secure them in one hand as you close the car door. A slight shuffle and slide on the ice beneath your heels, and you’re on your way. The beautifully decorated house greets you as you head up the driveway. You especially love how the garland of mistletoe frames the arch of the front porch. Your hostess went all out this year! You’re hoping you dressed the part too. A jolly Santa Claus statue holds a wooden sign painted with the words “Skip the Jingle, Come on in and Mingle!” in a twirly festive font. You can hear the muffled sounds of holiday cheer just on the other side of the heavy door. The party is already in full swing. Taking one last glance down at your outfit and a few taps of your feet, knocking off the remaining snow on your shoes, you cross the threshold. The heavy door quietly closes behind you, immersing your senses in the fragrance of evergreen, twinkling lights on multiple Christmas trees, and classic Christmas music. Just then, you reflect on the days leading up to this moment. You can’t help but giggle at the mini-dramas that unfolded in your closet, while you hunted for the perfect outfit — one that balanced looking chic, cozy and just festive enough for the occasion. Did you leave the bed piled with clothes, and drawers jumbled in frustration? You did. With a subtle shake of your head at the memory, you think what people would have thought if they saw you just an hour ago. We all know the small flutter of excitement, albeit with a little fear, from the time we get that ping from a party invite notification to the time you make your entrance. As a personal stylist, each year my Instagram messages are full of people writing to me from a place of fear rather than holiday cheer. They write in hopes that I can offer suggestions on what to wear, and I help them decode the dress code on their invites. Navigate the journey from the invite to a fabulous entrance, stress-free. ’Tis the season for sparkle, bows and that timeless question: “What am I going to wear to all of this?” Let’s turn that fear into holiday cheer.

Host and Hostess Gifts As a bonus, for those who don’t want to show up with your hands swinging, my favorite hostess gift is what I call the “after-party pamper set.” I curate the gift bag custom for each host, but generally, it includes a festive candle, a bottle of bubble bath, Liquid I.V. (for a shot of hydration after a long night of entertaining) and a pair of cozy slippers. Your hostess will appreciate you!

Cocktail Attire Cocktail attire, distinct from black tie, calls for a step up from casual wear. Choose semi-formal outfits for holiday gatherings with friends: knee-length or midi dresses, or a chic blouse and skirt combo with statement jewelry. Pro Tip: Rock open-toe heels with tights for a winter-friendly look, and consider adding Mary Janes for a trendy look.

Festive Glam Embrace festive glam with sequins, glitter or rhinestones in a monochrome color scheme. Experiment with unexpected pairings like hunter green with lime green, red and hot pink, or pair navy blue with light blue. A hot pink belt is my favorite accessory right now because it can effortlessly elevate your festive wardrobe, completing your look by complementing colors like navy blue, maroon, green and red. Belts are back in a big way, so this season add the belt over almost any look. Gentlemen, to achieve a festive glam look, consider a velvet blazer and explore the same monochromatic color scheme.

Business Formal Business formal exudes professional sophistication, perfect for upscale work parties and networking events. Elevate your day-to-day workwear, showcasing your night-out style. Opt for statement suits in festive colors, prints or fabrics that are on-trend this season. Enhance the look by layering a turtleneck under the suit and adding a belt around your waist on the outside of the jacket for a beyond-stylish look.

Casual Festive For casual festive attire, opt for cozy sweaters and embellished tops paired with jeans or stylish pants. While it may not necessarily be an ugly sweater party, feel free to wear one if you’re inclined, unless your host specifies otherwise.

Dr. Jennifer Burgoyne

Owner, BE Aesthetics

Written by Alexis Evans

Q. What are the greatest rewards and the biggest challenges from your rebrand?

A. It’s been super collaborative and creative. I love that we are

expanding and including more aesthetic providers, which has led to more services and more time for our patients. The big challenge is just letting people know about who we are and what we do!

Q. Tell me about your team. • Jennifer Burgoyne, MD (owner, BE Aesthetics, board-certified ophthalmologist, member of American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery)

Here for Every Aesthetic Pampering Need Q. When did you open BE Aesthetics? A. I opened my aesthetic practice as Beautiful Eyes, LLC, in 2015 concurrently with my medical practice, ICT Eye, LLC.

Q. You recently rebranded. What motivated you to do that? A. We continue to expand our rejuvenation services and wanted

our logo to be more inclusive. Before, as “Beautiful Eyes, LLC,” it gave the impression that all we offered were eye treatments and surgery. We didn’t want people to shy away from our services thinking that all they could have done was eyelid surgery. Being BE Aesthetics still encompasses Beautiful Eyes and eyelid surgery, while “Aesthetics” lets people know that other skin services are provided as well.

Q. Can you give me a scope of the services you offer? A. We offer a comprehensive line of services from injectables

• Kassandra Tucker, RN, BSN (advanced nurse injector, certified laser technician) • Lynne Silver, LE (licensed esthetician, certified laser technician) • Pearl Ejibe-Akuma, MPH, COA (cosmetic coordinator, patient navigator) • Regan Stilwell, COA, OSA, OSC (practice manager)

Q. What is the most important thing to you in running BE Aesthetics?

A. Safety, quality and creativity. We are fundamentally a medical

practice, and we follow the same guiding principles that apply to ICT Eye, LLC. We invest in provider training, current technology and customized service. We have fun, too! We treat each other with respect in a light atmosphere, caring for patients together. We also do team-building activities outside of work like Crawl for Cancer, Wind Surge Games and sometimes Bitchy Bingo! The team at BE Aesthetics is ready to help every Wichitan look and feel their very best. Be sure to book soon for some much-needed holiday pampering!

and lasers to chemical peels and surgery. This includes cosmetic Botox or Dysport injections, facial fillers, PDO threads, radiofrequency micro needling, CO2 laser resurfacing, IPL, Ultherapy, chemical peels, DiamondGlow facials, PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections, cosmetic lesion removal of the skin or eyelid, and full cosmetic upper and lower lid blepharoplasty surgery.

Q. What have you been focusing on the most as you rebrand BE Aesthetics?

A. We are promoting our non-surgical services and our repeatable services, especially focusing on our new technology. Our newest injectables are Sculptra and Skinvive. Sculptra is injected to help stimulate natural collagen growth to help restore facial volume and fullness over time. Skinvive is the new skin hydrator. It is the only FDA-approved hyaluronic acidbased injectable to improve cheek smoothness.

COMMUNITY LEADERS RISE TO READ Written by Julie Hying

Storytime Village is working to help students rise in their reading achievements. Through a collaborative effort with schools, the community and corporate partners, the organization’s Read and Rise program helps to instill a lifelong love of reading in children, promote the parent’s role as the first and most important teacher, and give them the tools to be strong readers.

Through school visits, family literacy nights and fundraising events, Read and Rise’s newly recognized ambassadors will continue the important foundational work of Storytime Village and look to positively impact literacy and the futures of our community’s families and children.

This fall, the Read and Rise program will introduce ambassadors that have “risen to the challenge to address the children’s literacy crisis,” says Storytime Village CEO Prisca Barnes.

To learn more about the Read and Rise program or to become an ambassador, visit storytimevillage.org.

Storytime Village’s mission in the fight to improve reading includes providing access to books, creating family engagement, supporting early literacy, and engaging in advocacy and awareness.

Lighting Up the Town With Tunes Written by Natasha Park

Kimberly Paige

Meet Two Multifaceted Local Artists

in my relationships with words and people. I aspire to live fully within my purpose and share my gifts with as many as I can. What’s a gift for, but to give to others?” When asked who inspires her musically she replied, “Kimberly Paige is the best vocalist in Wichita!” Paige’s voice is technically spot on. It’s as smooth as a warm hug and genuinely sounds like herself. Rarely can you find these three qualities in one voice.

Maybe you’ve seen Cydnée Alyxzan perform at Vorshay’s Cocktail Lounge, Mort’s Martini and Cigar Bar, Simply Sangria Cydnée Alyxzan or Hopping Gnome Brewing Company. Alyxzan is more than a singer-songwriter. She’s currently working on Wichita vocalist Kimberly Paige’s debut album. She is also excited about her next independent project — also an album — because “it is different from any other work I’ve released to date.” More surprising, she writes for theater, film and television. She’s also a two-time International Songwriting Competition Semi-Finalist and is currently working on an original musical! “My work is inspired by life and love and all aspects of each,” Alyxzan said.

The vocalist has been singing her entire life, from church to school programs, lounges and festivals. Paige is a Wichita native, a vocal coach for over 20 years, and has been performing even longer. Paige mostly writes and sings R&B, soul and jazz, and is wellversed in various styles of rock. She is beyond impressive. She is unafraid to take on just about anything vocally. “I have three groups I’m a part of: my band, Kimberly Paige and the Minimalists; my jazz quartet, We Play Jazz; and a duo called Kym and Cyd. We are for hire and currently play all over Wichita,” said Paige. “Wichita is home, it’s where my family’s legacy is. Because I’ve been singing here my whole life, the music community has always been supportive, and it’s also very niche. Wichita turns out unbelievable talent.” Paige is currently recording at Wichita State Studios with Zac Cooper, and is hopeful that two EPs about the journey she’s on in life and love will be out by the end of 2023. Check out these artists, Cydnée Alyxzan and Kimberly Paige, at an ICT venue near you. Both are a treat of inspiration, encouragement, friendliness and talent.

Her upcoming album is heavily influenced by multiple genres, though she aims to write as freely as she can. “I write what comes to me and it doesn’t seem to abide by any rules.” You can find Alyxzan on the streaming platforms, listed under alternative R&B and soul, with a subgenre of contemporary R&B and soul. On her upcoming album, “the first track is spoken word poetry, so that was included by the distributor as the genre too.” As far as the album art is concerned, her close friend with whom she went to pilot training, Keisha Holback, brought Alyxzan’s vision for the cover art to fruition. Alyxzan has forever loved music. “The more I discovered about myself in writing, the more I found my place in music,” she said. The artist began taking steps to progress musically in her writing and performing while she lived in Colorado Springs during college.

Where to Find Them For more information about Cydnée Alyxzan go to wandererspeaks.com. @alyxzanmusic @wanderer_poetry Find Kimberly Paige at: sites.google.com/wsunited.org/kimberlypaige Email: kimsvocalstudio@gmail.com

Now, after sharing her gifts in Wichita, she said, “I love the opportunities here! There’s a robust, yet ever-growing, artistic scene that I never anticipated before moving to Wichita. With her cumulative gifts she aims to convey a special purpose: “My purpose is love, which some translate to charity. My gifts are rooted 64

‘Movement and Music’

A ‘Nutcracker’ Pas de Deux

Written by Karen Long | Photography by Steve Pierce

Tchaikovsky composed the score for “The Nutcracker” in 1892, and from the beginning the ballet was meant to be accompanied by a live orchestra. Stirring horns and lively strings conjure the toys to life, the clash of symbols heralds the deadly aim of Clara’s slipper, and the celesta resonates with every enchanting step of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Wichita has been fortunate to have the opportunity to experience “The Nutcracker” performed to a live orchestra for over four decades, exclusively with Ballet Wichita’s production. As they look toward the future and kick off their 50th-year celebrations, executive director Sandy Wolter says the company is committed to this treasured collaboration. “Dancing to live music offers a truly immersive experience; the synergy between the dancers, the conductor and the musicians allows for a deeper emotional connection between everyone performing and with the audience. It means ‘The Nutcracker’ is never the same performance and part of what makes Ballet Wichita’s production truly magical and unique.” Artistic director David Justin agrees. Last year he brought in Maestro Steven Byess as guest conductor. Byess, who’s been hailed as “masterful and brilliant,” returns this year to lead the Ballet Wichita Symphony. “Movements and music, they speak together,” says Justin. “The spark that happens between the dancer and the live music in that moment is the spark that the audience gets to see. As a dancer it’s so important and so powerful. Beautiful. I’m very grateful we have that.

Hannah Chandler as Columbine Doll

A ‘Nutcracker’ Friendship For one Ballet Wichita ballerina and one musician, the “Nutcracker” encapsulates 10 years of friendship. “We both share a passion for the arts: He’s a violinist and I’m a dancer. We’re performing the same show, which is really cool,” says Hannah Chandler, who is dancing the roles of Dew Drop Fairy, Mirliton and Columbine Doll this year. Her friend, Landon Roy, will be playing violin with the Ballet Wichita Symphony for the second time. Chandler and Roy first met in fifth grade and went on to share many classes through middle school and high school — including music classes. But Chandler’s path eventually led her toward dance; this will be her 13th year dancing in the “Nutcracker.” “I have grown up watching Hannah perform in Ballet in The Park,” says Roy, “and in the ‘Nutcracker’ at least four times.” Likewise, Chandler has attended several of Roy’s concerts with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Collaborating with his longtime friend in last year’s “Nutcracker” for the first time was “phenomenal,” says Roy. “The music combined with the dancing — it’s, like, extra. It really adds something special to the performance, because you get the visual aspect as well as the music.”

“It changes the way you exist in a moment: because it’s live music, every show is subtly different and nuanced.”

Distinctly by Dawn Written by Dawn Tucker

What Does Your Tree Say? This month I want to brag about the talent of a few local designers and their genius in creating custom Christmas trees and décor for the season. These designers have always caught my eye and never disappoint with trees that are whimsical, funky and fun. Like all things design, I truly believe that each tree should do several things: First it should make a statement. Your tree should not only make a bold first impression, but what does it say about you, your personality and style? Does it give you the feels? What is the ambiance when guests, family and friends gather around the tree? Most importantly, does it reflect the story you want it to tell? It should have a story and it should be your story. One of my personal trees is decked out in traditional red and gold. These colors take me back to childhood and bring me happy memories. To me, these traditional colors, combined with soft, warm twinkling lights, make me and my guests feel warm, cozy and calm. These colors create a balance of tradition, style and boldness that I love gazing at all season long. And lastly, they speak the story of my style with a combination of different ornaments, large ribbons and bold florals. I had the privilege of speaking with a few accomplished local designers and asked them what sets their own style apart, plus a few key tips for your own decorating. However you celebrate the Christmas season, I always hope the season brings you peace, hope, love and joy. Creatively yours, Dawn

Design Source Interiors “At Design Source Interiors, led by designer Nahid Holmes, we like to ensure holiday décor is cohesive with the scale of the space and has a stunning, sophisticated look. A key to achieving a high-end holiday look is giving each area plenty of volume and fullness. This can be done by combining layers of natural elements such as berries, greenery, garland, pine cones, twigs, and curly willow, alongside shiny, sparkly elements brought in through ornaments, beads and glitter.“

70

DECEMBER 2023 · splurgemag.com

Acornacopia “Look at a few closeups of our trees and you’ll see we incorporated everything from stuffed animals and baskets to large ornaments and household decorative items. We love unconventional and different with a touch of tradition. Remember, every tree needs a statement piece, so make sure you have one that speaks loudly. At Acornacopia we love to think outside the box — for instance this year we created a custom tornado tree. Now that sparks curiosity and conversation, doesn’t it! “

McCoy’s Consign & Design “More is more and less is a bore when it comes to decorating a tree for the holidays. Nothing is off limits. Filling a tree with a great abundance of items is a favorite of ours. One tip would be to fill in your tree with floral stems or other faux winter branches to give the tree a more full and noticeable presence. (It’s never enough!) Another tip: Set a foundation for a color scheme. Make certain colors pop and your tree will grow to become the center of your holiday design.”

Multi-Generation Family Adds to Layers of History at Harry Street Carpet Chris, who is the oldest son of Jim Jr., started working at Harry Street on the weekends while in grade school. “I have pretty much done it all: mow the grass, sweep the parking lot, unload trucks, cut and get job materials ready to go out, sales, and now head bookkeeper and president of the company,” he said. “I am truly blessed to have begun at the bottom of the company and worked my way up.” Jim Jr.’s youngest daughter, Adrianne, eventually married Jason Potucek, who started out unloading trucks and fulfilling warehouse duties. He eventually moved into sales and has been selling ever since. Harry Street family members – Landon Hastings, Bret Hastings, Susan Hastings, Jim Maybrier, Peyton Hastings-Pauly, Chris Maybrier, Grant Maybrier and Jacksyn Potucek. (Not pictured, Jason Potucek)

Jason’s oldest son, Jacksyn, and Chris’ oldest son, Grant, are both finishing apprenticeships to move into sales at Harry Street — and the beat goes on.

It wasn’t long after Jim and Laverne Maybrier opened shop at 211 W. Harry St. in 1950 that their first son was born in the makeshift apartment at the back of the store. Today, Wichita’s well-known Harry Street Carpet remains in the same location and is still a family affair. “As you can see, this is truly a family-centered, -owned, and -operated business that has evolved over the years as the newer generations have become involved,” said Chris Maybrier, company president and head bookkeeper. “We, however, would be unable to do what we do without the support of our outstanding staff of sales associates, warehouse workers, estimators, clerical and reception, and, of course, our installers.” Harry Street is still owned by the Maybrier family, with the younger generation now learning the ropes. Chris said that his grandparents, Jim Sr. and Laverne, originally started the business selling used furniture. Eventually the store grew into new furniture and carpet sales. As son Jim Jr. got older and began taking on responsibilities at the store, he took a liking to the carpet business — but his father did not. “Eventually, in 1968, Jim Jr. bought out Jim Sr. and continued to sell carpet, while Jim Sr. stayed in the furniture business,” Chris said. “He ended up founding Jim’s Furniture a few blocks away at 2171 S. Broadway.” That’s when the name Harry Street Carpet was born. The store started selling vinyl flooring to go along with their carpet, but did not expand beyond those two items for some years to come. It wasn’t until the next generation became involved with Harry Street that the business began to transform, expanding into other items and offering flooring, countertops, cabinets, doors and windows. “Much of this really took off when our new, current facility was constructed just behind where the original store buildings were,” Chris said. Jim Jr.’s oldest child, Susan, began working at Harry Street while in high school and for several years beyond. She was the main bookkeeper for years and also served on the sales floor. When Susan married Bret Hastings, Bret joined the business; he is now the sales manager and head purchasing agent for Harry Street, and Susan still helps with accounting from time to time. Both of the couple’s children, Landon Hastings and Peyton Hastings-Pauly, are sales associates at the store. 72
