Happy Thanksgiving!

400 Years of Thankfulness It’s been 400 years since the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the

Pilgrims in November 1621. What a magnificent tradition that has endured the test of time.

In September 1620, the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the “New World.” After a treacherous trip that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth.

Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy, and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from a member of the Abenaki tribe who greeted them in English.

Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims,

weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers, and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans.

In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. —history.com Best wishes to you and your family for a blessed day filled with gratitude and family. Readers Write Tornado update from Podivin, Czech Republic Dear Sister Melanie, I live only about six miles from where the tornado of June 24, 2021, struck six communities where I had friends living and where taught in schools or private lessons. Yesterday, Saturday, November 6, I took a tour of the towns and villages of Hrusky, Moravska Nova Ves, Mikulcice, Luzice, and Hodinin. It was horrible seeing all the homes, churches, schools, and other buildings damaged some even still boarded up. The homes that weren’t destroyed still show all the scars of being pelted with flying objects. Many of the homes, churches, and other buildings are still undergoing repair work either by the owners being helped by volunteers or companies. In front of many properties are stacks of new roofing tiles, bricks, lumber, and other necessary building materials.

In some areas, all of the trees were uprooted leaving the stumps still showing what direction the tornado was moving in. Most all of such trees have been cut up and all the branches and limbs were hauled outside of the location into farm fields where there are large choppers making chips of this wood. There are some workmen still clearing damaged

trees out of small forests that partially survived the forces of the tornado.

I saw the homes where friends lived only now being rebuilt; others, only the bare ground where their house once stood. The schools that were almost totally destroyed are being rebuilt so that they can hold classes in them. Several Sokol buildings are boarded up until the homes, schools, and churches are back in usable condition. My one friend’s new home was so damaged that they had to have it demolished after living there for only two weeks.

It all looks worse than being in a war zone. I spoke with several of my friends and former students who lived through the tornado. Their voices told more of a story than what they said . . . the terror, fear, and being thankful for surviving was shown on their faces.

I didn’t take any photos as what you see today isn’t what it was - I have my memories of that.

My eyes couldn’t take in all that had disappeared, was damaged, or what had been fully repaired because there was just too much to absorb in one time. I may go back at Christmas time to take some cheer to them.

FROM THE SPJST Executive Committee October 20 and 21, 2021, Minutes of the Regular Meeting of SPJST Executive Committee held at the SPJST Home Office Temple, Texas PRESIDING The meeting was called to order by Board of Directors’ Chair John Engelke on Tuesday, October 20, 2021, at 8:55 a.m.

ATTENDING Board of Directors: Donnie Victorick - District One/Vice Chair of the Board of Directors; Jesse Pospisil - District Two; John Engelke - District Three/Chair of the Board of Directors; Bobby Davis - District Four; Bradley Stavinoha - District Five; Annie Vahalik - District Six; Regina House - District Seven.

OPENING OF MEETING The meeting was opened by Board Chair Engelke with a welcome to all. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed in respect for our departed members. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska led the Executive Committee in an opening prayer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS President/CEO Vanicek announced the visitors who would be joining the meeting: Home Office Staff Members at 11 a.m.; Rob Clift, Executive Director of Camp Kubena at 1 p.m.; and Larry White and Stephen Gonzalez of AQS Asset Management at 4 p.m. Dinner with RVOS leaders would be at 6 p.m.

Home Office Staff Member Linda Hill will be the recording secretary.

APPROVAL OF SUPREME LODGE MINUTES After review July 20 and 21, 2021, regular minutes of the Supreme Lodge meeting, Director Stavinoha moved we accept all the minutes as written. Director Pospisil seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.

MANAGEMENT TEAM MEETING NOTES The management team meeting notes were reviewed.

Director Stavinoha moved to acknowledge the notes as written. Director Vahalik seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously.

VĚSTNÍK OLD BUSINESS President/CEO Vanicek, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty, Chief Financial Officer Mikeska, Controller Vajdak, and Vice President of Communications Zavodny each presented a report on their old business, and each report was accepted as presented.

President/CEO Vanicek congratulated Lodge 1, Fayetteville on the secured grant of $50,000 from Texas Historical Association to complete the restoration of Lodge 1’s historic hall.

NEW BUSINESS The Executive Officers each presented a report on their new business.

STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING The strategic planning meeting will be November 22 and 23. The BKD report and budget will be central themes.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. on November 22.

MEMBERS’ PORTAL Controller Vajdak discussed a program of the members’ portal system. Director Victorick moved to add a members’ portal that would allow members to review their certificates online. The cost would be $20,000. Director Vahalik seconded the motion, and the motion carried unanimously.

HOME OFFICE STAFF RECOGNITION Several Home Office Staff were recognized for a total of 165 years of service. They were Linda Hill - 10 years and Marissa Salinas - 15 years from Chief Financial Officer Mikeska’s department; Cynthia Hutka - 35 years from Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty’s department; Marie Wolf - 5 years, Debbie Dohnalik - 45 years, and Dorothy Stuchly - 55 years from Controller Vajdak’s department.

Recess was from 12 to 12:50 p.m.

CAMP KUBENA Executive Director Rob Clift presented a comprehensive report on Camp Kubena.

EXECUTIVE SESSION The Committee entered executive session to discuss salaries.

Recess was from 3 to 3:28 p.m.

AQS INVESTMENT REPORT Larry White and Stephen Gonzalez of AQS presented a report on SPJST investment performance and book yield increase from 4.37 percent to 4.69 percent since January 1, 2021. Needed changes to the investment policy statement were reviewed. Director Stavinoha moved, and Director House seconded, that maximum amount of NAIC-2 be increased to 55 percent of assets and the real estate mortgages amount be increased to 15 percent. Director Victorick moved, seconded by Director Stavinoha, to amend motion to increase from 15 percent to 20 percent. Vote was taken, and the amendment carried unanimously.

Board Chair Engelke welcomed everyone to the meeting. Chief Financial Officer Mikeska led the Executive Committee in an opening prayer.

President/CEO Vanicek presented a program to designate an SPJST Youth Charter Committee, which consists of President/CEO Vanicek, Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director House, Director Vahalik, Vice President of Communications Zavodny, State Fraternal Director Frank Horak, Camp Kubena Executive Director Rob Clift, and all District Youth Counselors (DYCs).

Director Engelke recommended that the committee meets on November 4.

EXECUTIVE SESSION The Committee entered executive session to discuss salaries.

It was noted that there are 41 full-time equivalent SPJST employees of which 33 work at the Home Office. Director Pospisil moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to give each full-time employee a bonus of $500 and $ 250 to part-time employees. The motion passed with six in favor and one opposed. Voting in favor: Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, Director Davis, Director House, and Director Vahalik. Opposed: Director Stavinoha.

Recess was from 10:13 to 10:29 a.m.

Controller Vajdak discussed information for a technology support specialist and assistant controller. Motion was made by Director Stavinoha, seconded by Director Vahalik, to search for applicants for an assistant controller position, which would be evaluated by a committee. Motion carried unanimously.

President/CEO Vanicek proposed that the SPJST 125th anniversary be celebrated in October 2022 at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange and in conjunction with its annual heritage festival.

The Committee entered executive session to discuss one of the lodges concerning audit of that lodge.

Recess for lunch was from 12:26 to 1:10 p.m.

Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty presented new annuity products. Motion was made by Director House, seconded by Director Pospisil, to accept these changes to the annuity products that we would allow children to meet membership requirements by purchasing an annuity. Motion carried unanimously.

Chief Financial Officer Mikeska presented his report of investments. Motion was made by Director House, seconded by Director Vahalik, to ratify the investments for the period beginning July 1, 2021, through September 30, 2021. The motion carried unanimously.

Director Pospisil moved, seconded by Director Vahalik, to leave interest payout rates on annuities and Universal Life certificates unchanged from November 1, 2021, to January 31, 2021. Motion carried unanimously. Interest rates on currently marketed products are:

Director Stavinoha moved, seconded by Director Davis, to the correction on presented rates to read as 3.25 percent on the lodge management fund account. Motion carried unanimously.

Controller Vajdak discussed the appointment of the auditors for the 2021 audit. Motion was made by Director Victorick, seconded by Director Stavinoha, to appoint the JRBT firm. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Stavinoha discussed investing in a private equity fund. Motion was made by Director Stavinoha, seconded by Director Davis to invest one-half percent of our portfolio, which could be up to $1.3 million. The motion failed with two in favor, four opposed, and one abstaining. Voting in favor: Director Davis and Director Stavinoha. Opposed: Director Victorick, Director Pospisil, Director Engelke, and Director House. Abstaining: Director Vahalik.

CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Board Chair Engelke deferred his presiding role to President/CEO Vanicek to conduct the election for Chair and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. Director Victorick nominated Director Engelke to serve as Chair of the Board of Directors in 2022. Commentary We had a very productive meeting. We discussed and voted on many issues. We were able to make our decisions due to the excellent data not only from the officers, but also from the directors. I was anxious to attend our first meeting under the new governance structure. I was wondering how the meeting would be held. But the meeting went in the usual orderly manner as before.

Congratulations to the Home Office staff members who received their service awards. The years of service to SPJST were from five years all the way to 55 years with the total years of service being 165 years from six employees. That’s incredible!

Commentary I would like to thank the Board of Director and Executive Officers for a good meeting. The year is looking good, but we still need to watch spending. Let’s look and see what kind of return we get on the money we spend. I would like to thank Delisle for the training and meetings he is doing - the programs he is putting together to help the agents as well as the employees in the Home Office.

Commentary The District Five Fall Funfest was a huge success. We saw an attendance that was not seen in a long time. Lodge 88, Houston President Aaron Rigamonti and the leadership at Lodge 88, Houston are doing really well. There were people dancing around the gazebo, great music, fun, and fraternalism.

The stage sponsor fundraiser at Lodge 81, Needville filled up on sponsors in one week. The lodge’s dance floor was damaged during the freeze in February. Funds will be used for a new dance floor.

Lodge 172, Pasadena is very close to selling its building finally.

Here is what business lessons I learned from the tequila industry and how it is so similar to SPJST. I recently returned from a tequila distillery tour in the Jalisco, Mexico area. In Mexico, the tequila industry has more than 170 distilleries that generate more than 75,000 jobs mostly in the Jalisco area. They produce 375 million liters of tequila. Of that, 287 million liters are exported mainly to the United States. That generates a foreign exchange spill of $2.3 billion. All these distilleries have been in the family for many generations, and most are over 125 years old. They are run by older Hispanic men who are very much set in their ways and hate change. They want things to continue as they have been for many generations in their family and at the distillery. Machismo is the rule here, and strict standards are enforced . . . but changes are happening. The small distillers have become more adaptive and diversified.

I spoke in depth with Gilberto Sauza with Fortaleza and Felipe Camerena with G4 tequila and female owners Leticia Hermosillo with Cava de Oro and Sophia Decobecq with Calle 23 tequilas on business strategy and marketing. Most smaller distilleries have hired new, young and in many cases, female master distillers to change the flavor profile to attract young millennials and female tequila drinkers to attract new customers. Promoting family and community over profits is very important for the small local distillers. The smaller distillers offer more value even though most of the time they are not the cheapest. This is similar to the beer industry where consumers have moved from the large breweries like Budweiser, Miller Lite, and Coors, more consumers now embrace the small craft brewers, and those have taken a huge market share. The tequila industry has also seen the small distilleries thrive in the last few years with consumers preferring the smaller unique companies that meet a niche in the market.

Very similar to the tequila industry, SPJST has been around many years with a high set of standards. SPJST is also hiring younger agents and have a larger number of female agents than in the past. SPJST also now has two female directors adding a unique insight and perspective like never before. SPJST also has so much more to offer than the larger life insurance carriers. SPJST meets a niche in the life insurance industry. SPJST also highly values family and community. SPJST also adds value to its products in a highly competitive market.

SPJST Scholarship Applications Available Online Great news! You can find the new SPJST Scholarship Application by clicking on this link https://spjst.org/scholarships/. The application will be completed and submitted on-line. Here is a list of items to have available prior to starting the application: expected date of high school graduation; names of three personal references and their email addresses and phone numbers; a copy of your high school transcript that has been signed and/or stamped by a school official; a copy of your SAT or ACT scores; and a headshot photograph. Please look on-line for the scholarship application guidelines to help you complete all sections of the application.

If you have a 2022 graduating high school senior in your lodge, please let them know they are eligible to apply for an SPJST scholarship. Also, full–time undergraduates who have not received an SPJST Scholarship may apply for the scholarship.

Completed scholarship applications must be submitted on-line no later than February 1, 2022. Again, all applications will be submitted on-line. 2022 Lodge Refund Requires Timely Response SPJST’s longstanding Premium Refund Program compensates lodges on the basis of the premium income generated by the lodge and a demonstrated commitment to achieving basic fraternal engagement and reporting requirements. The formula that is used for calculating your lodge’s premium refund for 2022 will be $1 for each paid-up certificate; and 1.25 percent of your lodge’s annual earned premium. As such, there is no maximum amount that any lodge can receive.

This premium refund will be automatically deposited in February in the account that your lodge has on file with the SPJST Controller. In the event that the lodge has changed banking institutions, please notify the office of the Controller with the correct account information.

In order for the lodge to receive its premium refund for the current year, the following guidelines will apply:

100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Everyone spread the word! October 1 started the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to benefit the scholarship fund. Through your generous donations, SPJST has been able to continue to provide scholarships to members who wish to further their education. Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2022.

SPJST Meetings: Play It Safe Even though the Corona virus continues to be a part of our lives, we are asking lodges to have more faceto-face adult lodge meetings and youth club meetings.

Please review the tips below and incorporate them in your face-to-face adult lodge meetings and youth club meetings. Precautions to consider include actions to prevent transmission between people, where to hold the meeting, and how it can be modified to make a safer environment. Meeting organizers are requested to provide all necessary supplies – masks, hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, and distance markers. Meeting on-line or teleconferencing remains an option that should be considered or when precautions cannot be effectively implemented or adequately communicated. If you have any specific questions relating to setting up an on-line meeting,

2. Service to each other and service to the community represents an important part of the SPJST mission.

2020 and 2021 were extraordinary years due to COVID-19. Recognizing this, consideration has been extended to this year’s reporting process. Lodges that qualified to send delegates to the 33rd SPJST Convention will be considered to have met their meeting/activity obligation for the year 2021. This excludes those lodges where premium refunds are being withheld for various reasons. Lodges which did not qualify to send delegates to the 33rd SPJST Convention will be considered on a case by case basis.

If your lodge has been recording its meeting and event activities on the fraternalsgive.org website, please continue to do so. This information is important in that it is used to help in constructing the SPJST’s year-end report to the American Fraternal Alliance.

Please know that the process for recording and submitting your fraternal hours for 2022 is being simplified for next year. You will be receiving more information on this in the January State Fraternal Director’s letter.

990 and 990-T Forms Due May 15, 2022 Please know that your lodge’s 990 and 990-T IRS forms are due to the SPJST Home Office on May 15, 2022.

These forms are to be directed to the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. It will be necessary to submit this documentation in order to ensure that your lodge remains in good standing.

Outgoing Officers With the election of new officers, do not forget to honor your officers who have given their time and dedication to your lodge. Honor your outgoing leaders by giving them an outgoing officer plaque. Any officer who is not elected to serve in 2022 and does not seek re-election in the future is eligible.

The recipient must be a current SPJST member and must be active at the time of selection. The plaques should be awarded at your local lodge meeting.

Something to Consider: Strategic Planning for Your Lodge SPJST recognizes the importance of fielding a fraternal program that is relevant and in touch with the lives of its members. Whereas some lodges are experiencing a resurgence in member participation, others have been less fortunate. There are reasons for this: While it is certainly possible for a lodge to experience a level of success without a plan, those lodges whose members have invested the time and resources into a mission and goals can look forward to achieving success at a much quicker pace.

A great place to start is by conducting a simple — and fun — strategic planning session that helps to answer, “What is my lodge doing to make a positive difference for its members and for the community?” And with a little bit of advance notice, President/CEO Vanicek and I would love to lend a hand with the process. With just a little preparation, it is possible to conduct this three-step exercise in 60 to 90 minutes. In the end, the information that is collected can be useful in constructing a strategic plan for your lodge. It makes for a fast-paced and enjoyable program. Topics that don’t typically come up in your regular lodge meetings will be the positives as well as the negatives then we talk about how to build on the positives and what we can

VĚSTNÍK do to eliminate the negatives. When we’re done, your lodge will be on its way to move forward with a clearly defined mission statement. If you’d like to have us come in and work with your lodge, please give myself or Brian a call, and we’ll set it up.

2022 State Tournaments Scheduled All SPJST State Tournaments are now scheduled for 2022. Please know that our Regular 42 Domino tournament will be played in another location other than the Temple Home Office. The tournament will take place in Ledbetter, Texas at our Camp Kubena. I will have more information about the location and the special event that will be taking place that day.

The 2022 tournaments are: Progressive “42” Dominoes on Saturday, January 8 at SPJST Home Office in Temple; Tarok Tournament on Saturday, February 5 at SPJST Home Office in Temple; Straight Dominoes on Saturday, March 5 at SPJST Home Office in Temple; and Regular “42” Dominoes on Saturday, April 2 at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter.

I Hate Brussel Sprouts . . . I’m Not Too Crazy About Fruitcake Either As many know, I own the Christian Business Fellowship Association in Houston, Texas. This is a business network for Christian business, much like a chamber. Once a month, we take a Bible verse and adapt it to today’s world. A great friend of mine writes these for the businesses. This is so appropriate for everyone I thought I would share it. I would like to give a special thanks to Patrick Howard for allowing me to share it.

‘Tis the Season You know what I mean. The Halloween candy has all been eaten. (How did that happen so quickly?) That first little bit of cold air descends on Houston. (And it didn’t come from your air conditioner.)

Pumpkin spice is in the air. (Do we have to pumpkin spice our coffee?) The person you voted for in the last election lost, and your weird brother’s guy won. You wonder how your favorite college team will win enough games to become bowl eligible. All these events can mean only one thing. It’s time for Thanksgiving!

That’s right. Thanksgiving is that day when it’s okay to stuff yourself senseless, so you can take a two-hour nap in front of the TV while the Cowboys lose. That day when you get to listen to your crazy brother tell you why the country is going to be so much better because his guy won the election. That day when you rediscover why you despise pumpkin spice anything.

Thanksgiving and its associated traditions are uniquely American. We have so much to be thankful for, yet we take so much for granted. Before we dive headfirst into our Thanksgiving routine, let’s take a moment to focus on the words of King David.

1 Chronicles 16:34 – Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!

His faithful love endures forever.

We serve an amazing God. Not only has He given us the gift of eternal salvation, but he provides for all our mortal needs as well. When we say the Lord’s prayer, we ask Him to provide for our needs (our daily bread); and He is always faithful in providing for us.

If you don’t believe me, let me ask.

Did you wake up this morning? Did you sleep in a bed under a roof last night?

When was the last time you went hungry? Do you have clothes in your closet?

Do you have people in your life that love you?

We are truly rich with God’s blessings, but it’s never enough. Think about the answers to your questions above. (If you’re like me, your answers may be something like this.)

I have heard this said many ways, but this is my favorite: Being happy doesn’t mean you have it all; it simply means you are thankful for all you have.

My challenge to you this month is to make this your mindset. Whenever you start to complain about something, turn it around and find a reason to be thankful for it instead.

Instead of complaining about getting up too early, be thankful that you were healthy enough to wake up.

Instead of complaining about your lumpy mattress, be thankful that you slept in your own home last night.

Instead of complaining that your brother voted for the wrong guy, be thankful that you live in a country where you are allowed to vote for the wrong guy.

Instead of complaining about eating at McDonald’s, be thankful that Whataburger is just down the street.

Instead of turning your nose up at the bowl of brussel sprouts in the middle of your Thanksgiving buffet, move over and grab some mashed potatoes instead. Let those brussel sprouts be a blessing for your weird brother. Then be thankful that you have so much food available to you that you can stuff yourself senseless and take a two-hour nap in front of the TV while the Cowboys lose. There are a lot of people who can’t.

This Thanksgiving, focus on the words of King David and give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Christmas party Dec. 12 Dear Members, Lodge 4, Hallettsville will hold its annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Vsetin Educational Building beginning with registration at 11:30 a.m.

A noon meal will be served consisting of fried chicken provided by the lodge with the members kindly asked to bring side dishes and desserts.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Christmas party Dec. 5 President Milton Peterson called the Lodge 6, Cottonwood meeting to order on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at 2 p.m.

The youth lead the Pledge of Allegiance and SPJST motto. A moment of silence was observed for the sick and deceased of the lodge.

Sister Barbara Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting.

Sister Peggy Dobecka gave the treasurer’s and youth reports. Sister Jeanette Beseda gave the fraternal report. Sympathy cards were sent to the families of Jimmy Uptmore, James Miller, Patty Dragoo, Tony Kubacek, Ron Suwner, David Mynar, John Rauschuber, Davie Adair, Eric Chudej, Kara Greener, and Bruce Gerik.

Attendance door prize winners were Jeanette Beseda, Irene Peterson, and Patty Rosales. November birthday was Milton Peterson. We hope he has a wonderful 80th birthday.

Scholarship applications are being accepted online at spjst.org until February 1, 2022. The Progressive 42 domino tournament will be at the Home Office on January 8, tarok tournament at the Home Office on February 5, straight domino tournament at the Home Office on March 5, and regular 42 domino tournament on April 2 at Camp Kubena.

Linda Wilde will accept reservations for the New Year’s Eve dance with Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five. She will also accept reservations for the Squeeze Box dance featuring Ted Lange and Mollie B on February 6, 2022.

President Wilde has the sign ready to erect. The sign is heavy and will be a job to put up. It will be at FM 485 and FM 964 in all its glory. The old sign will be taken down.

Our plan for new members did not work as we had envisioned.

Adjustments are being made.

We had great cooks at the pits and for the noodles, beans, and coleslaw.

Lodge 29, Taylor Christmas meeting/party Dec. 5 On Wednesday, November 10, 2021, SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor met for its regular meeting. President Ronnie Rieger opened the meeting and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Ronnie asked for a few moments of silence to honor the departed Veterans and those presently serving our country. Officer roll call showed Tammy Cannon absent. Jesse was excused as he was attending the Lodge 177, Academy meeting. The October minutes were read and approved.

Ronnie gave the treasurer’s report.

Sharon Kaderka reported the members will collect for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive at the December meeting, and Lodge 29 will match the

amount collected. Sharon asked for recommendations as to who we could donate to for Christmas. Mary Jane Pustejovsky made a motion to donate $100 to the fire department for Toys for Tots. Charlie Campbell seconded, and the motion passed. Sharon also reminded everyone about the benefit we are having at the hall on Sunday, November 14. They are selling barbecue plates and having a silent auction, raffle, car show, and a band. It will be downstairs and outside on the grounds.

Ronnie recognized the Veterans in attendance and thanked them for their service. They were Frankie Pustejovsky, Leonard Kaderka, and Charlie Campbell.

Officer for 2022 were elected. All current officers were reelected. Jesse Pospisil was reelected to the Property Committee (2022-2024). The 2022 officers for Lodge 29 are:

Lodge 189 Bryan-College Station Christmas dinner Dec. 12 Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station invites their members and guests to their December meeting and annual Christmas dinner on Sunday, December 12, 2021, at 12 noon at C&J Barbecue, located at 1010 South Texas Avenue in Bryan.

Lodge 200 Bruceville-Eddy hosts successful pancake supper Members of SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy met for their October meeting. After enjoying a meal, President James R. Hosch called the meeting to order with members reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence.

The minutes, treasurer, and FAC reports were then read and approved followed by birthday announcements.

Next, Lodge 200 presented a check to Bruceville-Eddy Fire Department Chief Ron Engelke, who was a guest along with wife Yvonne.

Old business was discussed followed by new business, which included the upcoming Veterans’ Day pancake supper (which was a success), Christmas party, and election of officers, after which the meeting was adjourned.

In Memoriam In Memory of Charles Krampota Charles Krampota, age 82 of Pearland, Texas, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2021, at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Visitation was held 5 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, September 23 at Scott Funeral Home in Alvin.

Funeral Charles Krampota mass was at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 24 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manvel.

Graveside service was at 3 p.m. at Restwood Memorial Cemetery in Clute.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were grandchildren Lauren, Dylan, Peyton, Reese, and Emma.

Charles was born October 2, 1938, in Iowa Colony and was a resident of Pearland since 2006. Prior to moving to Pearland, he lived in Lake Jackson for more than 40 years. He worked as a chemical operator for BASF in Freeport for 33 and one-half years before retiring in 1996. Charles was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in

Manvel and served eight years in the Texas National Guard.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 162, Iowa Colony. He loved listening to polka and waltz music and going to dances.

Charles was an avid fisherman who enjoyed his place on Lake Somerville.

He also loved his gardening, especially vegetable gardening. He’s had his tomatoes pictured in Texas Gardener. Charles enjoyed travelling as well, especially to the West coast and mountains. His international travels included the Czech Republic, Austria, and Italy.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Teresa Krampota Sr.; sisters Grace Cook, Ruby McAnally, and Evelyn Giddens; and brothers Raymond Krampota and Melvin Krampota.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Sandra Krampota; daughter Katherine Deffebach; son Kenneth Krampota and wife Melissa; brothers Franklin Krampota and wife Katie and Jerry Krampota and wife Peggy; grandchildren Lauren, Dylan and Peyton Deffebach, Reese and Emma Krampota; and numerous other relatives and friends.

State Fraternal Director shares December youth news 2022 SPJST Youth Club Handbook Review Youth leaders will have an online review of the 2022 SPJST Youth Club Handbook on Saturday, January 29, 2022, starting at 9 a.m. We will wrap up the online meeting before noon. Youth leaders will have an electronic version of the handbook emailed to them weeks prior to the online meeting. Please know I will be setting up this link and sharing it with you.

Youth Leaders Appreciation and Workshop Save the date: April 22 and 23 Youth Leaders, due to another event scheduled in Temple on February 25 and 26, we will be moving our Youth Leader Appreciation and Workshop to Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23.

You and an adult guest are invited to an appreciation social and dinner Friday evening, April 22 at Camp Kubena. This will be a western-themed event, and a catered dinner will be served to you while enjoying live music and mystery theater.

Saturday morning will start with breakfast and a question-and-answer session about the 2022 SPJST Youth Club Handbook changes. We will have a breakout session right after breakfast followed by open high ropes, axe throwing, team building at low ropes, and leather craft. We also would love our

three nights in 2022. We will start on Thursday with camp registration beginning at 2 p.m. through 3 p.m. If you are unable to make that registration time, please contact your DYC to make arrangements.

Please know if you cannot make it to camp when your district is scheduled, you can register for the other session.

Nowhere does it say you have to go with your district. This includes youth who have completed kindergarten to age 13, trained LITs, and chaperones.

Donations of any amount will be accepted and added to the general scholarship fund that is maintained by the Home Office. No amount is too small or too large. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will run through March 31, 2022.

Youth SPJST Scholarship Applications Online Now The SPJST scholarship application is now available online at https://spjst.org/scholarships/. If you have a 2022 graduating high school senior in your lodge, please let them know they are eligible to apply for an SPJST scholarship. Also, full-time undergraduates who have not received an SPJST Scholarship may apply for the General Scholarship.

The application will be completed and submitted online. Please look online for the scholarship application guidelines to help you complete all sections of the application.

Completed scholarship applications must be submitted online no later than February 1, 2022. Again, all applications will be submitted online.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports on November meeting Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas continue to meet virtually. Youth Leader Lynda Novak reminded everyone about the lodge’s Christmas party on Sunday, December 5 at Sokol Dallas. She also reminded us all to continue submitting our Vestnik projects. She congratulated us all on our beautiful Christmas ornament submissions at the District Three Fall Fun Day in October. She announced that the SPJST youth theme for 2022 is “Saddle Up with SPJST” and that the design contest promoting the theme was due to State Fraternal Director Frank Horak by November 1. The new year will be bringing lots of activity so we need to keep on our toes!

Melissa grew up in Snook, the daughter of Donnie and Janice Victorick, and became a member of Lodge 9, Snook before age one. Legend has it, the late Ernest Jakubik was in the driveway shortly after her parents got home from the hospital to sell them her first insurance certificate, making her a lifetime member of SPJST. One of her earliest memories was winning the Little Miss Burleson County contest when she was four. She recalls the host asking about her favorite color and something she’d want if she were to win. When she answered black balloons, the crowd laughed. Black balloons continue to be a favorite today.

Attending SPJST camp is another early memory. The cabin time, horseback riding, nature walks, and the friends made in the non-air conditioned cabins are some of her favorite memories of Camp Val Verde.

Her absolute joy comes from supporting her husband Allen and cheering on daughter Addison, also a Lodge 88, Houston member.

A hummingbird weighs about the same as a nickel, yet it flies over five hundred miles, nonstop, to cross the Gulf of Mexico. They can do things no other birds can. Their wings beat approximately eighty times per second and their extra flexible joints enable them to go from full speed to a full stop in the blink of an eye and to fly backwards.

This unique ability teaches us that we can look back at our past without dwelling on it as we move forward. As the hummingbird hovers to drink nectar, we are reminded to savor each moment in life.

The Legend of the Panda No. CW-1121 - $10 Pandas originated in China and are considered a “national treasure”. The Chinese government has even given them as gifts to other countries’ governments!

This popular legend describes how the panda got its black markings: Pandas were originally as white as snow. A group of panda cubs became friends with four female shepherds who watched their flocks in the mountains near the village. One day as the girls were playing with a panda cub, a leopard appeared and tried to attack the cub.

The young girls threw themselves between the leopard and the panda to save it, but they were all killed by the leopard. The pandas in the area were saddened by their deaths and held a service

to honor them. The pandas spread black ashes on their arms in mourning. As they wept, they wiped their eyes with their paws and covered their ears to block out the sound of the crying as they hugged each other. As they did these things, the black ash blackened their fur.

They did not wash it off and today, pandas are covered with black markings.

Noah’s Ark No. OR 207 - $11 The story of Noah’s Ark and the great flood, found in the Book of Genesis, is common to the religions of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the Baha'i Faith. It tells of extreme punishment for human wickedness in the form of an enormous flood. God saved only Noah (a righteous man), his family and pairs of each animal, bird, and crawling creature on earth. They all took refuge in an ark which Noah built while the waters rose.

After the waters subsided, God promised never again to cause such a flood.

The Guardian Angel No. OR-203 - $22 Angels symbolize purity, peace and love and are a comforting presence for all of us. Angels announced the news of the birth of Jesus, who was God’s gift for all the people of the world.

Our guardian angels help to keep each of us on the right path in life, guiding us through life’s many experiences and uncertainties.

The Christmas Tree No. OR-201 - $18 Fir trees are widely recognized symbols of the Christmas season. In ancient times, the fir tree symbolized nature’s triumph over the deadly cold and darkness of winter. Christians began using fir trees to represent Christ’s gift of eternal life. The tree also became known for its nurturing attributes. The large

branches of the tree gave protection to the birds and it also provided shelter to other animals during the chilling, wet, winter months. In more recent times, other varieties of trees are used as Christmas trees.

Wreath No. OR-204 - $15 The wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of love - never ceasing and never ending. It is one continuous round of affection. Because they are circular in shape, symbolizing eternity, the circle of life, and endless hope, people began to use them at Christmas.

Wreaths combine several Christmas symbols including holly, fruit, mistletoe, evergreens, tinsel, or other items, all of which retain their own symbolism on the wreath.

The wreath has no beginning and no end, symbolizing God Himself.

Pumpkin Swirl Brownies Betty Crocker Kitchens

Filling 3 ounces (from 8-ounce package) cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) 1 Tablespoon Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 egg, separated, yolk reserved for brownie batter

Brownies 1 box (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Supreme original brownie mix Water, vegetable oil, eggs called for on brownie mix box for cakelike brownies Reserved egg yolk Steps 1. Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease bottom of 9inch square pan with shortening or cooking spray. In small bowl, mix cream cheese and sugar with spoon until smooth. Add pumpkin, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and egg white; mix until well blended. Set aside.

2. Make brownie batter as directed on box, adding reserved egg yolk. Reserve 1/2 cup brownie batter; set aside. Spread remaining batter in pan. Spoon filling by Tablespoonful dollops evenly onto batter, making 3 rows by 3 rows. Spoon about 1 Tablespoon of the reserved brownie batter in center of each filling dollop. Draw knife through mixture in four straight lines horizontally, then vertically for swirled design.

3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool 30 minutes on cooling rack. Refrigerate at least 1 hour until chilled. Cut into 4 rows

Tips • Take cream cheese out of the refrigerator about 30 minutes before stirring up the batter, allowing it to soften and warm up. Or, to quickly soften cream cheese, remove from wrapper and place on microwavable plate. Microwave uncovered on High about 10 seconds or just until softened.

• Adding the extra egg yolk to the brownie batter gives structure and helps the cream cheese filling swirl throughout the brownies.

• Be sure to insert toothpick in the brownie and not the cream cheese filling when testing for doneness.

• To make cutting brownies a breeze, line the baking pan with foil, allowing some to hang over edges of pan. Once the brownies are chilled, you can lift them out of the pan onto a large cutting board, peel foil away and cut into serving pieces.
