t award ceremonies, graduations, and lodge meetings across the state in the next few weeks, SPJST representatives will be honoring 60 SPJST members and proudly presenting $1,000 scholarships and leadership grants to each of them. This breaks down to 11 leadership grants, 43 freshman scholarships, and 11 undergraduate scholarships for a total of $60,000.

The SPJST Scholarship Program is a wonderful benefit of being an SPJST member. A big congratulations to these members, and we wish them the best in their studies. The winners appear on pages 15 to 21.

SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration this Saturday in Seaton The 14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration is this Saturday, May 4 at Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall. A big shout-out to Lodge 47 and its members for hosting this event.

We enjoy working with them and appreciate the use of their beautiful facility and grounds.

We invite everyone to come on out and enjoy the day at Star Hall. Vendors booths are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Music starts at 10 a.m. Beseda dancers and Miss Texas will perform during a ceremony that begins at 1:45 p.m. The silent auction - with lots of fantastic items - closes at 1:45 p.m. Car show awards are at 2:30 p.m.

Thanks to our friends at Farm Equipment Service, Inc. in Temple, we will be giving away a Bad Boy MZ Magnum Zero-Turn Mower through a drawing that will be held in August for

the SPJST Foundation. This amazing mower will be displayed at the car show. See you there!

Sincere Sympathy We extend heartfelt sympathy to the family of past District Seven Youth Counselor Liz Bielefeld of Lodge 107, Floresville. Liz passed away on April 19 at a San Antonio hospital. She served as DYC from 1999 to 2003. Her service was held Thursday, April 25 at Vinyard Funeral Home in Floresville.

Burial was at Dewees Cemetery. Her obituary appears on page 25.

The 14th Annual SPJST Car Show and Czech Heritage Celebration on Saturday, May 4 will be filled with classic cars, arts/crafts, food, music, Czech heritage, kids’ activities, and family fun at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall! Star Hall is located at 10842 State Highway 53, seven miles east of Temple in the community of Seaton. The event opens to the public at 9 a.m.

Miss Texas to Perform Special guest is Miss Texas Madison Fuller, a 24-year-old graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in communications. Madison is currently working on her master’s at Dallas Baptist University pursuing a degree in school counseling. She is a third generation educator and recently completed her first year as a kindergarten teacher at Dr. Bryan Jack Elementary in Tyler. During her 12-month speaking tour, she will make more than 300 appearances and speak before over 100,000 people about the Texas Cares for Children Program, the Children’s Miracle Network and her personal platform “Sock it to Cancer: Pediatric Cancer Awareness.” She has helped raise more than $260,000 for the Wipe Out Cancer telethon.

Madison will perform her award-winning ventriloquist talent during the ceremony which begins at 1:45 p.m. She was the talent award recipient at the Miss America pageant in September.

200 Cars Anticipated Car show registration begins at 8 a.m. The show is organized into 40 classes. Vehicles will be independently judged, and more than 100 trophies will be awarded. Special trophies will also be presented to Miss Texas’ choice and the top three people’s choice entries. Other special awards include club participation, distance, best engine, best paint, best graphics, and best interior. A special SPJST Award will be presented to an SPJST member. To enter a car in the show, the fee is $30 ($25 for SPJST members). An entry form appears online at spjstcarshow.com.

Silent Auction, 50-50 Drawing The day will also include a silent auction and a 50-50 drawing. The silent auction will close at 1:45 p.m., and the 50-50 drawing will be held prior to the awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.

Sauerkraut-Making, Other Demonstrations Czech Heritage Museum volunteers will have special displays like sauerkraut-making, noodle-making, lace-making, rope-making, and accordion music. Camp Kubena will also feature family activities.

Czech Music, Beseda Dancers, Meet-and-Greet State Royalty A variety of polka, country, and classic music will be played beginning at 10 a.m. SPJST District Two Beseda Dancers will perform at 1:45 p.m. SPJST Royalty - State King Nash Campbell of Rogers, State Duke Tyson Bilbrey of Moody, District Two Queen Brooke Newsom of Taylor, and District Two Duchess Tynlee Beckendorf of Riesel - will also be meeting and greeting attendees.

Vendor Booths Arts/crafts, service, auto-related, and farmers’ market vendors will be displaying their wares from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside and outside Star Hall.

Kids’ Zone Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club will host the Kids’ Zone. Activities include carnival games, bounce house, hay ride, face painting, and other activities.

Admission is Free of Charge Food and Beverages Available Event admission is free of charge. Beverages, including beer, will be available from Lodge 47, Seaton both inside and outside Star Hall. Tea will also be available.

Various food items will be available inside the hall from Lodge 47, Seaton. Breakfast tacos and sausage biscuits will be available in the morning, and the lunch menu will consist of barbecue sandwiches, sausage wraps, turkey legs, hot dogs, nachos, and other snacks.

By Brian Vanicek SPJST President Dear Friends, Greetings and welcome to “Fraternal Focus,” my new Vestnik column and the opportunity to connect with you on a range of subjects impacting SPJST, our lodges, and the fraternal ideals that we seek to convey and to live. Editor Melanie is very much on board with the idea as long as I don’t go overboard and submit a 2,000-word essay every week! Fair enough: I will do my best not to cross that line!

I’ve always enjoyed writing. It’s still the medium that I feel most comfortable with to express the ideas roaming around in my head. As Vestnik Editor from 1992 to 2004, constructing a weekly editorial allowed me to illuminate the topic of the day and to communicate directly with the members, bringing to light items of interest as well as identifying and addressing subjects that warranted the attention of the general membership. Granted, as Supreme Lodge President, I’ve continued to write and periodically submit items for publication in the Vestnik; however, that pales by comparison to seeking to convey a meaningful message in each issue.

We have a lot to talk about! Things that are good and things that challenge our survival as a fraternal benefit society.

And with the SPJST Convention coming up in June 2020, there will be some heady topics that warrant critical examination and discussion of our general membership and delegates. I look forward to addressing all of these things in the coming weeks and months in this column. For those of you who are technologically inclined, this column will also soon appear as a blog accessible through the SPJST website where you can offer your immediate feedback.

That should do it for introductory comments. Let’s move on and focus on the inspiring story of how the City of West recently celebrated the dedication of the City of West Fallen Heroes Memorial and of the important role SPJST had in making this beautiful tribute a reality.

West Memorial Offers Closure What a wonderful day it was for

SPJST and the City of West on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Hundreds of men, women, boys, and girls gathered at West High School for the dedication of the City of West Fallen Heroes Memorial.

Governor Greg Abbott attended the ceremony and praised the first responders and residents of West for working together on recovery efforts after the 2013 fertilizer plant fire and explosion which claimed 15 lives and injured approximately 300 others.

“Some people are alive today because of those heroes,” Governor Abbott said.

“West, as a town, is better and it will live forever because of those heroes.”

by State Senator Brian Birdwell, R-Granbury, and State Representative Kyle Kacal, R-College Station. Other regional first responders and emergency personnel attended the service and paid tribute to the fallen.

“I wish that it didn’t have to be built, that the individuals we honor today were still with us, oh how I wish that could happen,” West Mayor Tommy Muska said. “To those here who knew the fellow first responders and individuals, worked with them, volunteered with them, lived with them, let this memorial be a place where you can remember and cherish their memory.”

The memorial project was led by West City Council Member Joe Pustejovsky, whose son, Joey, was a member of the West Volunteer Fire Department and one of the 12 first responders who died. The memorial pays tribute to each of the 15 victims with stone markers arranged in a circle around a reflecting pool. The memorial also includes a stone wall with a narrative outlining the events of the night of the explosion.

In his presentation, Mr. Pustejovsky gave credit to the individuals and companies whose generous support helped to make the memorial possible. It was a proud moment for SPJST members in attendance to hear the SPJST West Benevolence Fund and SPJST District Three acknowledged for their generous support.

Vestnik readers may recall that the West Benevolence Fund was established by the SPJST Supreme Lodge on the day after the explosion “to address the short and long-term needs that were certain to emerge.” SPJST has a lot of great members and friends in the community and surrounding vicinity.

Collectively, SPJST members and lodges contributed more than $94,000 to

the West Benevolence Fund. That was impressive! An advisory committee comprised of the presidents of the four Westarea SPJST lodges was established to identify those projects needing attention.

That committee remains intact and continues to meet on an as-needed basis to review projects for funding. Committee members and their spouses, who have also been involved, are: Lodge 6, Cottonwood President Milton and Irene Peterson; Lodge 35, Elk President Randy and Carla Pavelka; Lodge 54, West President Freddie and Janice Kaluza; and Lodge 66, Waco, President John and Diana Engelke.

SPJST remains indebted to the advisory committee members and their spouses for their diligence in identifying and contributing to those projects where SPJST can make a positive difference, To date, checks have been presented to the following West area projects: • West Sokol — funding to enable the gymnastics club to purchase needed equipment that was lost when their building was destroyed • West Rest Haven — funding to purchase an outdoor gazebo, rocking chairs, and stained glass windows for the chapel • Waco Foundation — funding to purchase a fire truck playground equipment for the Parker’s Park Project • History of West Museum — funding for construction as well as display funding • West Volunteer Ambulance Association — funding of a new Polaris fourwheel drive EMS vehicle

• West Sokol — funds towards the construction of the new West Sokol Gymnasium • Fallen Heroes Memorial — funds toward the construction of the Memorial To summarize, the City of West has truly experienced a rebirth in construction and spirit over the past six years.

Drive around town, and you’ll see neighborhoods that had been devastated by the explosion graced by dozens of beautiful new homes. Even the streets and curbing are new due to the fact that many underground water and gas lines had to be replaced.

A 10,000-square-foot Emergency Medical Service headquarters stands where the old building stood before the disaster. Bigger and better, the emergency medical headquarters houses crew members, ambulances, and equipment, and provides room for training. The History of West Museum — opened in 2015 — tells the colorful story of this vibrant community. Exhibits showcase the early ancestors, businesses, churches, city leaders, farming and ranching, the military, and the impact of Czech culture on the town. The West Rest Haven senior living facility has also been rebuilt, providing 75,000 spacious square-feet of comfortable living space for its 127 residents. West Middle School and West High School, which were both destroyed in 2013, reopened together in 2016 in a new state-of-the-art $50 million facility.

SPJST extends its sincere admiration to the people of West and for the magnificent effort that they have displayed in rebuilding this great community. Keep up the good work!

State FAC shares May fraternal updates Grand Re-Opening of Lodge 19, Velehrad at Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange on Sunday, May 19 SPJST members, family members, and their guests are cordially invited to participate in the Grand Re-Opening of the SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall on the campus of Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange.

The event takes place on Sunday, May 19 in conjunction with TCHCC’s annual Slavnost - Mayfest: A Tribute to CzechTexas Immigrants of All Years. Admission is $10 per person and includes the meal and all events. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. with the opening ceremony. A fried chicken dinner starts at 11:30 a.m. with music by Texas Dutchmen from 12:30 until 5 p.m. The Grand Re-Opening of SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall takes place at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed later that afternoon by the traditional May Pole dance.

The Velehrad lodge hall was previously located on a two-acre tract in the northern part of Lavaca County in the Velehrad community. The area was settled in the 1850s and was named Velehrad or “Big Castle” for the Czech city of the same name. The Velehrad lodge hall was built in 1895 by Lodge Radhost 114 C.S.P.S (Cesko Slovanska Podporujici Spolek), which pre-dated the founding of SPJST in 1897. Not only did the lodge hall serve as a community center lodge room, it also served as a school.

When the enrollment of the 1883 Velehrad School became too large, school was conducted in the Velehrad Lodge Hall.

During the spring of 2006, the outside of the hall was restored by members of SPJST District Six Cemetery Association. The SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad hall is in the final stages of restoration and will be the latest addition to the TCHCC Czech Village which will also be open for tours on May 19.

Memorial Day - Monday, May 27 Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is celebrated every year on the final Monday of May. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service.

✴ Youth who attend lodges with no youth club can attend seven adult meetings and qualify for camp without pay.

The lodge secretary will need to provide the Home Office with copies of the membership roster of each meeting the youth attended. ✴ Youth who have not made at least seven meetings will be prorated $35 per meeting missed. Youth can make up a meeting by attending another local youth club. Please see your youth leader about this.

Member Referrals Wanted: Participate in the Monthly Prize Drawing!

When it comes to getting new SPJST members, there is no substitute for member referrals. Referral cards received during a given month will go into a drawing for three $25 Walmart gift cards. The individual making the referral also benefits SPJST by helping to build a stronger and more active local lodge.

On a related note, SPJST is looking for men and women who believe in the fraternal ideal and would like to consider the benefits of being an SPJST sales agent.

SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament On Saturday, April 6, a total of 56 players turned out for the SPJST State 42 Domino Tournament at SPJST Home Office in Temple. Of the 56 players that participated in the 15-round tournament, 21 were members and 35 were prospective members. Players drove into Temple as far away as Rosenberg, College Station, and Ennis. Players enjoyed snacking on doughnuts and kolaches; and for lunch, they enjoyed smothered chicken, mashed potatoes, and a vegetable medley from Oscar Store.

At the end of the tournament, door prizes were drawn while results were being tabulated. First through fourth place winners received a plaque and money. Winners of the tournament were 1st - Raymond Raesz and Jesse Safarik 2nd - Sonny Klepac and Willie Cervenka 3rd - Dwain Smith and Phyllis Smith 4th - Ernest Dieterich and Daylon Cry Coming Soon!

Sister Dorothy Veselka received a thank you note from Donna Baker, daughter of Mary Alice Langlotz, acknowledging thanks for the memorial donation to SPJST in memory of Mary Alice Langlotz.

For the May 20 meeting, Bush’s Chicken will be served, and 50 year pins will be awarded. We will also celebrate Mother’s Day. Sister Dorothy Veselka of the Cheer and Condolence Committee reported she sent a get well card to Mary Alice Langlotz and later a sympathy card to the family of Mary Alice Langlotz, who passed away.

Lodge 84, Dallas: annual picnic planning begins Dear Readers, Members of Lodge 84, Dallas met on Sunday, April 14, 2019, for their monthly meeting. The meeting was brought to order by President Justine Yeager at 3:03 p.m. Flag Bearer Lynda Novak led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members and troops serving our country.

Sunshine report - Get better soon cards were sent to Brother Paul Pokladnik on his back surgery, Kendall Tucker broke her thumb, and Josh Tucker who is recovering from an asthma attack.

Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Lillian Pokladnik Jennings Maxcy; may your loved one rest in peace.

Youth report - Youth Leader Lynda reported that the youth had met earlier during the day. They thanked everyone for the toilet paper contributions for their community service project for Restored Hope. She reminded the youth about the spring meeting on April 28 and to not forget about the decorated rock contest. She also reminded the youth that she needs their YAD cards before July 1, which is the due date to DYC Mary Steinman. Lynda also invited everyone to attend the Fourth of July Parade in Arlington. She reported that the youth made a contribution to the Bessie Petr Scholarship Fund in memory of Lillian Pokladnik Jennings Maxcy.

Lodge 107, Floresville to join hands for animal shelter May 4 at Walmart SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville will host a Join Hands Day project this Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Floresville Walmart, 305 10th Street, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lodge 107 adults and youth club members will join hands for a pet supply drive for Wilson County No Kill Animal Shelter.

Donations of Pedigree or Purina One dog food, Meow Mix cat food, Milkbone, Jerky dog or cat treats, dog/cat toys, cleaning supplies, poop bags, and money will be accepted.

Ennis Sewing Circle Ennis Sewing Circle met Thursday, April 11, 2019, at Sokol Club Room around 8 a.m. We stretched the quilt for Dorothy Kudrna. Before we knew it, we had quilters all around the quilt. Thank you, everyone, who came early and quilted.

We had 23 members and two guests - Alvoy Nesuda, and Sandy Rayford’s friend - I didn’t get her name.

President Irene still had her workshop going. The ladies who started their quilt top last month are really doing great. Their tops are really pretty. We are happy for you.

The “Our Father” was recited for all our sick members and for Pauline Novy, who passed away.

Vice President Ginny read several funny articles that we all enjoyed.

Sandy Rayford read the minutes of the last meeting for Dee Anderson as she was absent.

Dolores Vrana gave her treasurer’s report. All the above were approved.

Last month, we all signed a birthday card for Joyce Ehrenberger; she called Libbie to thank us for it. Remember, Joyce moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. We think of you often, Joyce.

Quilt scheduler Pat Fowler announced that in May, we will quilt the Christmas quilt. In July, we don’t quilt as we have our elephant sale and showand-tell items. Everyone, start saving all your sale items as July will be here before you know it.

We also discussed the Ellis County Quilt Show in July at Sokol Hall. They have asked if our Circle would set up a quilt for quilting and if we would show some of our quilts. It was discussed, and we think we will do it.

President Irene read a list of items for quilting that you can purchase at the Dollar Store.

Liz Krajca handed out leaflets about National Senior Fitness Exercise Day and Lunch that Sokol will be hosting on May 29; it is free, and everyone is invited.

President Irene announced some members have not paid their 2019 dues.

I know some may have forgotten, but try and remember to do so next month.

The 50-50 dollar winner was Dolores Vrana. We are so happy for you!

Ladies Circle of Lodge 92 Fort Worth To the ladies of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, I must apologize for my lateness in reporting our activities and sending pictures for March and April to the Vestnik. To everyone else, we are alive and well, and that’s a good thing.

The Tuesday, March 12, 2019, meeting was attended by 41 members. We offered a moment of silence in memory of our beloved Evelyn Scaff. She spent many years doing a million things for her Czech community, as well as sending in articles to the Vestnik each month.

As for activities, business took place as usual, and we had plenty of good food and fellowship. President Cathy Simmank reported that the donation to the lodge for their stage curtain project had been sent, and a donation was also sent to Salvation Army for their involvement during Hurricane Harvey. We’ve been collecting toiletries for Safe Haven, and Sunshine Lady Marlene Bass will again be dropping them off for us.

Our March birthday ladies in atten-

dance were JoAnn Wilcox and Peggy Thome. They were serenaded and sent to the front of the line for lunch. And, as always, we send birthday greetings to those who were unable to attend.

The meeting concluded with door prizes and the lunch blessing. Bingo followed lunch, and I think I won a pot. I was a happy camper!

Now for April . . .

President Cathy always makes our meetings interesting, and April was no exception. The Easter egg hunt she prepared for us was a huge success. Once again, we visited our childhood and remembered how fun it was looking for those eggs that the Easter Bunny brought. We thank her for the hard work she puts in to make our meetings enjoyable. At the meeting, Betty Krenek invited Teresa Farley of Ridgmar Place to come share a little about her facilities for anyone thinking about moving into a “senior” apartment. Teresa invited anyone who wishes to come out for a tour and lunch to just give her a call.

As for our usual routine, we welcomed a friend of Pauline Morbitzer; Vice President Janet Basham read a poem; we had our business portion of the meeting; and Marlene shared that she sent cards to Marilyn D’Orio, Ann Cooksey, and Carolyn Irby. Marilyn lost her brother recently, Ann Cooksey is under the weather, and Carolyn Irby is having health issues as well.

There were quite a few April birthdays. Those joining us were Lisa Juran, Joy Booe, Patti Williams, Wanda Moree, and last but not least, Lydia Alholm (a

big 99). Those missing were Joyce Tesar, Kathleen Thome, and Marie Keller. Happy birthday to all and many more!

Jon Durham thanked us for our donation to the lodge and gave an update of activities taking place.

Announcements of Note 1. Next month we will have a speaker from the State of Texas Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services give us information on benefits their office provides. It is my understanding that she will be bringing a selection of phones that are available for the hearing impaired.

2. May is to be set aside to honor our mothers. We will share pictures, stories, and memories.

3. The Senior Synergy Expo sponsored by the city of Fort Worth will take place on Thursday, May 9. By the time this article is in print, the deadline to register for free lunch and parking will have passed. It is my understanding that one does not have to register in advance to attend so go if you are interested. Our members tell me it is worth the time.

4. Sabino Garcia announced that he is the new insurance agent (Regional General Agent) for Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

He briefly gave his history in the insurance industry and stated that he would be available at the meetings each month if anyone has questions or needs.

5. And a big thank you was sent to Bessie and Lisa Ellsworth for the cute dinnerware and decorations they provided.

Bessie was ill and unable to attend, but she was certainly there in spirit. Get well soon, Lady.

S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living Board of Directors shares updates The board of directors of the S.P.J.S.T. Senior Living facilities met in Taylor, Texas, for their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, April 8, 2019.

President Donnie Victorick called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m.

All directors were present. Newly elected directors Bradley Stavinoha of Lodge 81, Needville in District Five and Joe Siptak of Lodge 4, Hallettsville in District Six were welcomed. Other directors include Donnie Victorick of Lodge 9, Snook in District One; Howard Leshikar of Lodge 48, Beyersville in District Two; John Engelke of Lodge 66, Waco in District Three; Beverly Teplicek of Lodge 49, Rowena in District Four; and Valerie Barta of Lodge 202, Jourdanton in District Seven.

The minutes, presented by Secretary Beverly Teplicek, were approved with one correction, and the treasurer’s report given by Valerie Barta was approved.

Reports were given by Jan Burns, Assisted Living Administrator; Juan Azua, Administrator of Needville Senior Living (Home No. 2); and Rowena Tabler-

Smith, Administrator of El CampoHillje Senior Living (Home No. 3). Mr. Woody Richards, CEO of Senior Living Facilities, presented a report for Taylor Senior Living (Home No. 1). The board expressed appreciation to each of the administrators for doing a good job at each of the facilities.

The meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m.

The SPJST Youth Program is top notch in the state, and we want all SPJST youth to experience our camp program. I wish more members would have their children participate in the youth program and camp.

Parents and grandparents, please

know your child or grandchild can go to camp if they are finishing kindergarten to high school senior this year for $250 - as long as they have a current SPJST life insurance certificate in force.

Parents and grandparents, if you have a certificate in force and your child or grandchild does not have one, he or she can still go to camp for $350. This is the first year we are offering camp to youth without a life insurance certificate. This amount is reasonable compared to other Texas camps. Some camps start at $745

Online Camp Applications Please know that all youth completing kindergarten to 12 years of age can sign up for SPJST Summer Camp until Sunday, May 26. Applications for LITs and camp chaperone are now closed for 2019. The last day to sign up was February 28.

Each camper needs to fill out a separate camp application. Please be sure to fill in each blank, and if it does not apply to you or your child, fill in the space with “N/A.” All camper applications for youth are due Sunday, May 26. Parents, when registering your child for camp, do not pay for the insurance offered.

SPJST Graduating Seniors Another youth year is around the corner . . . I can’t help but think about our seniors getting ready to graduate and move on to their next journey in life.

Flag Day Essay Contest All SPJST youth between the ages of five and high school senior are encouraged to enter this year’s Flag Day

Contest. This contest will promote patriotism and creative literacy.

There will also be a coloring contest for members ages eight and under. Several prizes will be awarded in the Flag Day Contest. All of the winners will be announced in the Vestnik leading up to Flag Day on Friday, June 14. The deadline for all entries is May 31.

This year’s theme is “The American Flag And What It Means To Me.” This would be a good time to talk about the right way to display the United States flag and flag etiquette. You may also consider having a member of the Boy Scouts or the American Legion come in as a guest speaker.

District Two plans May 18 baseball outing Dear Věstník Readers and Members, Spring is here, and we are ready for some outdoor fun! What better way to spend a Saturday evening than at the ballpark sitting, relaxing, and enjoying a Round Rock Express versus Nashville game at Dell Diamond?

For many of you who play ball almost daily, this might just be what the “coach” ordered for you!

Mark the date - Saturday, May 18 and plan to join all your District Two friends in Round Rock. We have seats reserved in right field (Section 126), and there is a spot for you at 6:05 p.m. Youth members, parents, friends, and all SPJST members are invited to join us. Tickets will be bought at a $12 group rate. This activity is for adults to join in with the youth. Active youth members will receive a big-time discount. All others will receive their seat at the $12 rate.

Following the game will be a Bob Schneider postgame concert. You can enjoy as much entertainment as you wish.

Lodge 202 Jourdanton youth plays volleyball in Las Vegas Dear Vestnik: I can’t believe that I got the opportunity to play volleyball - which is a game I love to play - out of the state of Texas, but I did! The principal at my school has her own club volleyball team, and I got to play with them last year at the Alamo

Dome in San Antonio. I had a lot of fun.

When she approached me at school and asked if I would like to play again with her and her club, I said yes, not knowing it was not in Texas, but actually in Las Vegas, Nevada! We left on April 5, played on the 6th and 7th, and returned to Texas on April 8. This was the first time in my life that I got to fly. I was nervous, but it was okay. We stayed at Trump International Hotel. President Trump and First Lady Melania were there, but the only thing I got to see of them was the car they actually got into

In Memoriam In Memory of Liz Bielefeld Elizabeth “Liz” Pavliska Bielefeld was born in Floresville, Texas, on July 30, 1943, to Joe and Pauline (Schwertlich) Pavliska. Liz passed away Friday, April 19, 2019, at the age of 75 at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.

Liz loved family, and her childhood was blessed with five Liz Bielefeld brothers and sisters. She attended Labatt School until the second grade and graduated from Floresville High School in 1961 where she was the hand signal leader of the pep squad her senior year. Following graduation, Liz moved to San Antonio with her sister Polly and began her first job.

In 1965, Liz met the love of her life, Erich Bielefeld, Jr. at the intersection of FM 1303 and Labatt Road: he invited her to a dance that evening. He never made it to that dance. However, they did attend many dances together before and after they were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on April 23, 1966.

In 1970, Liz and Erich welcomed son Erich “Trey” Bielefeld, III, and in 1975, they were blessed with daughter Stacy Elizabeth Bielefeld. Following the birth of her children and after holding positions at USAA and Bank of Floresville, Liz began her life’s work as a medical transcriptionist, first for Dr. Nixon, then Dr. Coates and Dr. Chavez, and lastly for Dr. Bundrant.

Liz’s greatest joys in life, besides her family, were her beloved hummingbirds, Bunco, and bowling. She was a founding member of a monthly Bunco club which has met for more than 40 years. For more than 30 years, Liz bowled with leagues in Pleasanton and San Antonio and enjoyed bowling faithfully until her death. She was a lifetime football fan and supported the Floresville Tigers immensely as well as enjoying the years she tailgated and supported her nephew’s IWU football games. Liz was also a diehard Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans fan.

Liz was a member KJZT and SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville where she spent numerous years serving as a member, youth leader, and officer. At the time of her passing, she held the financial secretary’s position at Lodge 107. She also served as District Seven Youth Counselor from 1999 to 2003.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Pauline Pavliska; and sister Rebecca “Susie” Blubaugh.

She is survived by husband Erich; son Trey; daughter Stacy; sister Polly Bayer and husband Bob; brothers Joe Bob Pavliska and wife Laura Lee, James “Pee Wee” Pavliska and wife Leysa, and Jeff Pavliska and wife Carol; brother-in-law Richard Blubaugh; sisterin-law Mary Ann Roberts; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.

Funeral service was Thursday, April 25 at Vinyard Funeral Home in Floresville. Burial was at Dewees Cemetery.

We played our volleyball tournaments at Mandalay Bay, which I enjoyed. We played on Saturday and Sunday. Since it was our last night there on Sunday, we went zip-lining through Vegas after our games. It was amazing and a lot different than zip-lining at camp. Needless to say, I had the best time of my life at age 16. I will never forget it!

In Memory of Pauline Novy Pauline Ann Novy, age 87, passed from this life into the arms of her Lord on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Pauline was born on September 21, 1931, in Ennis, Texas to Paul and Mary (Cech) Prda. She was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, The Catholic Daughters of America, KJZT Society 16, and was a past youth leader at SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

Pauline Novy She was also a member of the Golden Crusaders, VFW Post 7106, Ladies Auxiliary, past president for 19 times. She worked for Cody Company for 50 years and loved her job.

Pauline is survived by daughters Mary Jane Ventrca and husband Richard and Barbara Delaney and husband Jerold; grandchildren Rachel Leach and husband Tim, Elishia Featherston, and Jeremy Featherston and wife Janice; great-grandchildren Malcolm Williams, Declan Marsh, Kaiden Featherston, Kinley Featherston, and Lincoln Featherston; sister Betty Bates; sister-in-law MaePearl Prda; and many nieces and nephews.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Eddie J. Novy; brothers Adolph Prda, George Prda, and Stanley Prda; sisters Mary Kirby and Agnes Prda; and parents Paul and Mary Prda.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 at Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home in Ennis.

He was born on September 1, 1931, in El Campo to the late Adolph and Jennie Dornak Shimek. Floyd was a United States Army Veteran and a retired carpenter.

After retirement, Floyd Shimek Floyd enjoyed building things like swings, domino tables, and screen windows. He loved playing dominos and was a devoted member of American Legion Post 251, having previously worked bingo for over 40 years on Friday nights. He was also a member of the funeral honor guard, VFW, and was the former assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 531. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton.

He is survived by daughter Leeanna Shimek and Kenny Socha of El Campo; son Brian Shimek of El Campo; granddaughters Kristi Munoz and Lauren Miksik; three great-grandchildren; and sister Gloria Ann Slovak and husband Richard of El Campo.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our lodge sister, LILLIAN POKLADNIK JENNINGS. She was born March 17, 1928, to the parents of Emil and Marie Pokladnik in Dallas, Texas, who were immigrants from Czechoslovakia. She attended school in Dallas and graduated from North Dallas High School. She met her husband Elmo Jennings while working at Sears Roebuck.

Together, they opened Lillian Jennings Jennings Paint and Floor Company and were married for 30 years.

Sister Lillie was very proud of her Czech heritage and tried to pass on some of the traditions to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dal-

las for more than 70 years. She volunteered numerous hours of service for many years. She was also a member of other Czech organizations - Dallas Czech Choral Group, P.O.L.K.of A, Circle of Czech Women - Dallas, and others.

She traveled all over the world and loved to share her experiences with family and friends. Sister Lillie was also an amazing cook; she made the best kolaches and many other traditional Czech foods. Her family always came first to her, and she never missed an opportunity to tell them how much she loved and cherished them. She radiated that motherly quality to all around her.

Sister Lillie passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at the age of 91. Services were at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home. Private interment followed the service.

Sister Jennings was preceded in death by her parents; husband J.D. Elmo Jennings; daughter Carolyn Frazier; son Jerry Jennings; great-grandson Jackson Cheney; brothers Emil, Frank, and Robert Pokladnik; and sister Annie Petr.

She is survived by daughter Marilyn Cheney and husband John; son Adrian Jennings; daughters-in-law Cynthia Jennings and Michele Jennings; and son-inlaw Steve Frazier; grandchildren Audra Jennings, Adam Jennings, Kimberly Hooks, John D. In Memory of Joseph Schiller Joseph Donald Schiller passed away Saturday, April 11, 2019, at Elmcroft Assisted Living Center in Temple, Texas, after a brief illness.

He was born in Austin on February 28, 1934, to Emil and Annie Mae (Sevcik) Schiller.

He was baptized in Granger Brethren Church on July 14, 1934, by Reverend Josef Barton, Sr. Joseph Schiller His family moved to Rogers when he was a toddler, and he lived there until his hospitalization in January. As a child, he enjoyed playing with older brother Emil Lee and a vast number of cousins from both the Sevcik and Schiller families. Joseph graduated from Rogers High School in 1952 and did farming and ranching after high school. He also served in the United States Army in Korea. Joseph was a member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts where he especially enjoyed dancing to polka music.

Joseph married Ruby Lee Herzog in 1969 and began a career as a machinist at Newton-Neroc and later Material Transportation Company in Temple. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Joseph enjoyed his children and grandchildren, but genuinely loved being outdoors working on tractors and his land. He was extremely devoted to his son with Down Syndrome and enjoyed assisting the coaches of Bell County Special Olympics athletes.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruby Lee; and brother Emil Lee. Survivors include son David (Tammy) Schiller; daughter Kimberly (William) Evatt; son Kevin Schiller; grandchildren Brittany Young, Braden and Brooke Schiller, and Tyler, Allison, Emily, and Liam Evatt; and great-grandson Kaleb Young.

Viewing was Sunday, April 14 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral service was Monday, April 15 at 10 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Temple. Burial was at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.

Festivities begin with a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. paying tribute to all Czech-Texas immigrants.

During Slavnost, tour the TCHCC Czech Village, which includes structures from the late 1800s and early 1900s depicting what life was like for Czech Texans back then. See the latest additions – the Czech Newspapers Museum and SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad.

The village also features houses from the Kalich, Hoelscher Migl, and Hluchanek-Salas Families. The Hoelscher Haus is home to the Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum, and the Kalich house serves as the Czech Music Museum of Texas. The village also includes the Hospoda (Tavern) and General Store, Zapalač Saw Mill, Janak Barn and Texas Czech Agriculture Museum, and a log crib.

About TCHCC TCHCC incorporated on March 24, 1997, and received 501(c)(3) status in July of the same year. The location for this non-profit corporation was finalized when a lease was signed with the City of La Grange in November 1997. Statewide efforts by Czech-founded organizations to raise money to develop a Center that would preserve and promote the history, heritage, and culture of the people of Czech ethnicity began in 1995.

In December 1995, Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA), an umbrella organi-

zation that serves to improve and facilitate communication among Czechfounded organizations, called a meeting to hear a proposal offered by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas to build a library for the preservation of books and documents significant to Texas Czechs.

Following presentations and discussion, TOCA voted to support building a statewide Czech cultural center with a library, museum, and archives.

Fayette County was selected as the site for the center because of its significance in the history of Texas Czechs. It has the largest Czech population per capita and the most Czech communities of any county in the state. More immigrants from the Czech lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire settled there in the second half of the 19th century than any other county in Texas. Many Czechrelated historical sites and events, as well as prominent Texas Czechs, can be linked to Fayette County.

Prominent Czech-American Fred Malek dies at 82 Entrepreneur, financier, Army Ranger, philanthropist, humanitarian, business leader, and advisor to presidents, Frederic Vincent Malek passed awat Sunday, March 24, 2019, in McLean, Virginia. He was 82. Malek, or “Fred,” as he was known to many, lived a vigorous life full of purpose and his achievements spanned across multiple sectors of the American fabric. He was fueled and guided by principles learned at his alma mater (West Point). He exemplified the West Point motto, “Duty Honor Country,” treated people with kindness, and conducted himself with unmatched integrity often quoting West Point’s Cadet prayer urging others to always “choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong.”

An acclaimed business leader, Malek’s career spanned five decades.

He served as president of Marriott Corporation, and spearheaded the acquisition of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. As a senior advisor to the Carlyle Group, Malek co-led a group of investors in the acquisition of Coldwell Banker Commercial Group, now CBRE. Malek was also one of three leaders in the purchase of Northwest Airlines, later assuming a board position and eventually serving as president.

Malek also co-founded and served as chairman of Thayer Lodging, a private equity firm.

Malek was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and Harvard Business School. A Vietnam veteran, Malek served our nation valiantly as an Army Ranger attached to a Green Beret division and has been an
