With only five days to the 30th SPJST Convention, the SPJST

Home Office is filled with excitement and last-minute convention preparations. We are just about ready to welcome almost 300 delegates and their families to the Central Texas area. The convention is set for Monday, June 9 to Wednesday, June 11 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center, located at 3601 South W.S. Young Drive in Killeen.

Registration is Sunday, June 8 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center from 12:30 to 4 p.m. A complete convention schedule including all activities appears on the back page of this week’s Vestnik. I wish you a safe trip to Killeen and a great and successful convention.

A Moment for Minutes The minutes from the April Supreme Lodge meeting appear on pages four through seven. Please take a moment to read the minutes.

Lodge leaders, please take special note about an item that appears on page seven. The Supreme Lodge approved for the officers to study the lodge refund program based on merit for active lodges with buildings versus active lodges without buildings. This is in response to a request from Director Wuensche to help local lodges that have buildings. Lodges with buildings would receive more premium refund amount than lodges without buildings.

Background: The lodge refund program was passed in the 1956 Convention and authorized a 2 percent refund of mortuary premiums paid during that year. This refund

was to be paid to local lodges for collecting the mortuary premiums for the Supreme Lodge. In the 1984 Convention, the delegates voted to have the Supreme Lodge collect the premiums; however, the refund was continued. Today, the lodge premium refund is paid on an amount based on premium-paying certificates and on an amount based on paid-up certificates.

Ideas concerning Director Wuensche’s request will be presented at the July meeting with a recommendation at the October meeting.

All lodge leaders are encouraged to contact their district directors with their thoughts on this.

A father wanted to read a magazine but was being bothered by his little girl, Shelby. She wanted to know what the United States looked like. Finally, he tore a sheet out of his new magazine on which was printed the map of the country.

Tearing it into small pieces, he gave it to Shelby and said, “Go into the other room and see if you can put this together. This will show you our whole country today.”

After a few minutes, Shelby returned to her Dad and handed him the map, correctly fitted and taped together. The father was surprised and asked how she had finished so quickly. “Oh,” she said, “on the other side of the paper is a picture of Jesus. When I got all of Jesus back where He belonged, then our country just came together.”

SPJST Home Office to Celebrate Grand Opening of New Addition

The SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, will celebrate the grand opening of its new 11,084-square foot addition on Sunday, June 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. A ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the occasion at 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and tours will be available.

The new addition was constructed by V a n g u a r d Contractors of Temple. The late Architect Charles Voelter, who designed the original SPJST Home Office Building which was dedicated in January, 1971, worked with SPJST Supreme Lodge officers in designing the three-module addition that complements the

existing structure which consists of 22,000 square feet on the main floor and a basement/Czech museum of approximately 10,000 square feet.

For more than 35 years, the SPJST Home Office in Temple has provided SPJST with a base of operations from which to serve its 116 lodges and more than 50,000 members throughout Texas. The addition offers expanded office space as well as a sales and fraternal training facility.

Located on the corner of Main and French Streets, the SPJST Home Office is a prominent landmark within the city’s revitalized historic district.

Minutes of the April 15, 16, and 17, 2008, Regular Meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas

The regular meeting of the SPJST Supreme Lodge was called to order by Chairman Donnie Victorick at 8 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present:

The Supreme Lodge members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in honor of our service members serving throughout the world and in remembrance of our deceased members.

MINUTES – The minutes of the regular January Supreme Lodge meeting were reviewed. On page 212 under Local Lodge the word “transferred” was changed to “reassigned.” Director Rollwitz moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to approve the minutes as corrected. Motion passed unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS

SPECIAL STRUCTURE COMMITTEE – President Vanicek reported on the committee and those appointed to the committee. There was a lengthy discussion about the committee, its purpose, and its charge to report to delegates of the 30th SPJST Convention.

Recess was taken from 9:05 to 9:15 a.m.

FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR – President Vanicek reported there had been 31 members nominated for Fraternalist of the Year. Ronnie Pflughaupt had been recognized as SPJST’s State Fraternalist of the Year at the SPJST Awards Banquet.

JOIN HANDS DAY – To date, there had been 33 lodges committed to hosting Join Hands Day events for 2008 according to President Vanicek. At this rate, the Society was on track to exceed the 40 lodges that had participated in 2007.

TEXAS FRATERNAL BOWLING TOURNAMENT – The Bowl for the Cure intrafraternal bowling tournament raised $8,182. There were 70 SPJST members that bowled in the tournament. The team trophy was won by KJT, with SPJST finishing second. Several SPJST bowlers took individual awards.

LOCAL LODGES – President Vanicek reported members of Lodge 267, DFW are in the process of being reassigned to Lodge 183, Arlington. Lodge 230, Midland is in process of being reorganized, with the reorganization meeting scheduled for May 15.

END-OF-SUMMER GETAWAY – President Vanicek reported the End-ofSummer Getaway will be August 15 to 17, 2008, in Corpus Christi. Most of the activities for this event are on the beach. More than 20 rooms had already been reserved.

Recess was taken from 9:50 to 10 a.m.

Hugh Shine from Wachovia Investments was welcomed to the meeting. There was a discussion on the economy and what is expected with the markets. There was also a discussion about the difference between the market value and the book value of the equities.

Recess was taken from 11:25 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

SALES – Vice President McBride congratulated Districts Three, Five, and Seven for making their 2008 quotas. For the first three months of last year, 1,283 applications were written, but for the same time period of this year, 1,029 applications were written. The insurance written was up by $200,996, and the premium income was up by $56,886.

LODGES IN PROCESS – Vice President McBride reported there are 33 lodges in process. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to extend the date to organize these lodges for another 90 days. Motion passed unanimously.

MAIL POLL – Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to ratify the results of the mail poll to authorize the Vice President to create a newsletter for sales agents. The vote was nine in favor, two abstained, and one to wait until the April meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

PERSISTENCY BONUS – Vice President McBride reviewed the persistency bonus. The persistency bonus was based on certificates that were on the books for one year in 2007 and the sales agents had at least 10 certificates that were on the books for one year in 2007.

A.M. BEST – There was a conference call with representatives from A.M. Best. They reiterated their previous conference call that common stock was 26 percent of surplus, and the percentage is higher by fraternal life insurance industry standards. They also noted that 15 percent of the bonds were in the high yield category. They observed that the spreads between the investments and interest sensitive products as recommended by the actuary did not correspond. There is a gap between expenses and the revenue from all sources.

LODGE COMPLIANCE – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported there were 21 lodges that had not sent in their local lodge officers’ listings for 2008.

Second notices concerning the 990 and 990T will be mailed the first part of May. VESTNIK – Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the subscription list for the Vestnik stands at 11,496. Weekly postage amounts to approximately $2,700, and publishing costs amounts to approximately $2,500.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT – The independent audit is to be completed by May 31, 2008. This is to be delivered to TDI by June 30, 2008, and will cost $12,000.

MEMBERSHIP – Financial Secretary Mikulas reported certificate count was 55,628, and this amounted to 47,244 members.

VESTNIK – Editor/Director of Communication Zavodny reported on a story about “Janco and the Giant.” It would be run in the Vestnik for eight weeks as an insert and cost $7,050. There was a discussion about it being published in the Vestnik instead of as an insert. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to pursue publishing “Janco and the Giant” in the Vestnik in the most economical way. Motion passed unanimously.

The following recommendations of the Publication Committee were presented: 1. In order to assist with non-profit organizations who would otherwise not advertise due to costs, the Publication Committee recommends adding a Vestnik advertising rate of $6 per column inch for nonprofit 501(c) organizations. The non-profit organization must prove its non-profit status.

2. We recommend that the Vestnik Editor be included in the telephone after-hours voicemail menu at the SPJST Home Office so that Vestnik callers can leave messages. Currently, callers are instructed to press 1 to leave a general message; press 2 to leave a message for President

Vanicek; press 3 for Vice President McBride; press 4 for SecretaryTreasurer Anglin; or press 5 for Financial Secretary Mikulas. Reason: The Vestnik Editor should be included since this is a statewide elected position and so callers can leave Vestnik/Communication Department messages in the appropriate location instead of a general area.

3. The Publication Committee recommends that the SPJST Youth Spectacular, which is published by the Vestnik/Communication Department, be published in lieu of a Vestnik issue in the fall following State Youth Achievement Day.

4. The Publication Committee recommends that Recommendations No. 2, 3, and 4 made in 2007 that were presented to the Supreme Lodge be consistency adhered to. These include: 2. We recognize that the Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication is not a member of the Supreme Lodge; however, she is one of six statewide elected officials who is a supervisor of two Home Office staff employees. We recommend that the Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication be included in and be a part of any and all discussions and decisions directly affecting her office staff.

3. We also recommend that the Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication be included and be a part of any and all discussions and decisions involving the Vestnik, the float, the website, and any and all parts of the Communication Department.

4. The Publication Committee recommends that any and all activities that elected SPJST officials attend as a group on behalf of SPJST, the Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication should be invited to and included in.

Legal Advisor Popelka moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to approve the action recommended in No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT TWO – Director Wuensche reported on attending local lodge meetings at Lodge 20, Granger; Lodge 48, Beyersville; and Lodge 89, Rosebud. He attended the Progressive 42 Tournament, District Two Skating Party, District Two Spring Meeting, and State 42 Tournament. He attended a continuing education class at Lodge 47, Seaton.

DISTRICT THREE – Director Krizan reported that Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga and Lodge 180, Burleson continue to hold monthly meetings and make progress in lodge development. In addition, Director Krizan reported that a large number of lodges within the district are still requesting associate sales agents and for them to be involved in lodge activities.

Director Krizan recommended that the State Field Representatives call on all existing sales agents and visit all lodges requesting their assistance and that an equal amount of time be devoted to recruiting associate agents as opposed to just full-time agents.

Director Krizan then stated that because SPJST is a non-profit fraternal, it will be necessary that it continue to do fraternal sales versus regular insurance sales.

Director Krizan stated that it is important for us to firm up our fraternal sales base in our lodges so that we preserve and protect our local lodge system and the long-term benefits of doing this will reinforce our tax-exempt status and will provide the lodges with future leaders to manage and operate our lodge system. In closing, Director Krizan stated this is crucial to our survival as a fraternal benefit society.

DISTRICT FOUR – Director Rollwitz reported on attending meetings at Lodge 49, Rowena; Lodge 76, Wichita Falls; Lodge 160, San Angelo; and Lodge 230, Midland. He attended continuing education classes in El Paso, Abilene, and Rowena. He helped Lodge 229, Abilene with the Abilene Business Expo.

DISTRICT SIX – Director Ahlstrom attended meetings at Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 23, Moravia; Lodge 32, Victoria; Lodge 41, Port Lavaca; Lodge 97, Placedo; Lodge 143, Inez; Lodge 151, Wharton; Lodge 240, Bay City. He attended the District Six Cemetery Organization meeting, sales seminars hosted by Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 32, Victoria; and Lodge 67, Schulenburg. He attended the Certified Fraternal Field Managers Training and the historical marker dedication in Fayetteville.

DISTRICT SEVEN – Director Bayer reported on attending meetings at Lodge 79, Corpus Christi; Lodge 93, Hobson; Lodge 107, Floresville; Lodge 185, New Braunfels; Lodge 239, Hondo; Lodge 258, Seguin; and Lodge 271, Laredo. He attended continuing education classes in San Marcos and Floresville. He attended the DYC meeting and the District Seven Spring Meeting in Corpus Christi.

DISTRICT ONE – Director Victorick attended meetings at Lodge 13, Dime Box; Lodge 17, New Tabor; Lodge 38, Kovar; Lodge 141, Sealy; Lodge 169, Brenham; Lodge 179, Warrenton; Lodge 186, Caldwell; and Lodge 189, BryanCollege Station. He attended sales seminars hosted by Lodge 234, Luling; Lodge 67, Schulenburg; Lodge 9, Snook; Lodge 171, Lockhart; and Lodge 186, Caldwell. He attended several meetings of the Special Structure Committee and Certified Fraternal Field Manager classes, and he participated in the Bowl for the Cure. He attended the District One Spring Meeting and the dedication of the historical marker in Fayetteville.

Director Bayer reported there appears to be a lodge in District Seven that did not have a quorum at the majority of the meetings. There was a lengthy discussion about this matter.

Keith Fischer and Richard Hitchcock with USSI were welcomed to the meeting. They discussed new software and hardware for the computer. The new software would provide the Society better access to needed information.

State Youth Director John Hoelscher was welcomed to the meeting. He presented some requests from the DYCs. The Supreme Lodge commended all those who attended the statewide Youth Leaders Workshop in Temple. There was very good attendance at the meeting.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chester Jenke was welcomed to the meeting. He reported on various items and noted that Lodge 230, Midland will hold a reorganizational meeting on May 15 and an officers’ training on May 8.

Drawing for tournaments will be held at the July Supreme Lodge Meeting.

SCHOLARSHIPS – President Vanicek presented information on scholarships.

There were 93 applications this year with funds for 40 scholarships. President Vanicek moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to reward the full amount of $35,000 for scholarships this year instead of allocating $5,000 of these funds for endowed monies. Voting in favor were President Vanicek, Vice President

There was a discussion concerning the DYC’s proposal. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Wuensche, to approve paying per diem for up to 100 entries for YAD - two days per diem; 101 to 250 entries - three days preparation per diem; and over 250 four days preparation per diem. The per diem for camp preparation would stay the same. Motion passed unanimously.

COOPER FARM PROJECT – President Vanicek reported on meetings with the LCRA representatives and the visit by Supreme Lodge members and the ENC to Cooper Farms. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to proceed with negotiations with the LCRA for the property. Motion passed unanimously. A committee of President Vanicek, Vice President McBride, and Legal Advisor Popelka are to meet with the LCRA representatives.

It was agreed to table a decision on the National Sokol Slet in Fort Worth until the July Supreme Lodge Meeting.

Recess was taken from 2:15 to 2:25 p.m.

INVESTMENTS – There was a lengthy discussion concerning the phone conference with A.M. Best and their recommendations and the NFCA accreditation or to continue to purchase higher yielding securities as had been decided by the Supreme Lodge previously.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to not purchase any common stocks or preferred stock at this time due to the market conditions but to take capital gains when available and invest the funds in bonds with a NAIC designation of one or two. Motion passed unanimously.

COMPUTER – Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Popelka, to purchase the entire package as presented by USSI. Motion passed unanimously.

MORTGAGE LOANS – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer to accept the recommendations for 10 delinquent loans. Motion passed unanimously. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to set a loss reserve of $10,000 for a delinquent mortgage loan. Motion passed unanimously.

INVESTMENTS – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to ratify the investments of the past quarter. Motion passed unanimously.

INTEREST-SENSITIVE PRODUCTS – Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on the Universal Life Product. The actuary has recommended a spread of 100 basis points between the interest rate and the yield on securities. Currently, the spread is 72 basis points. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by President Vanicek, to lower the interest rate of the Universal Life products to 5.50 percent through July 31, 2008. Voting in favor were President Vanicek, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Popelka, Director Victorick, Director Wuensche, Director Rollwitz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion passed.

The spread recommended for Annuity I is 125 basis points. The current spread is 50 basis points. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Rollwitz, to leave Annuity I at 5 percent through July 31, 2008. Motion passed unanimously.

The spread for Annuity II, III, and IV as recommended by the actuary is 175 basis points. Currently, the spread is 122 basis points. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by President Vanicek, to set the rate of Annuity II, III, and IV at 4.50 percent until July 31, 2008. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to authorize Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to obtain the secretaries whether the person is a delegate or not and to pay the secretaries the per diem recommended by the Finance Committee. Voting in favor were President Vanicek, Vice President McBride, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Popelka, Director Victorick, Director Wuensche, Director Krizan, Director Rollwitz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Vice President McBride presented a persistency report that showed from March 1, 2007, to March 31, 2008, persistency based on applications was 80.79 percent; based on volume of insurance was 85.27 percent; and based on premium income was 83.61 percent.

The discussion concerning persistency continued. The talk about expenses included what were expenses across the board not grouped together. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, for the actuary to do a product evaluation of final expense, priority life, and youth achiever products.

Voting in favor were Director Pflughaupt and Vice President McBride. Voting against was Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Popelka, Director Victorick, Director Wuensche, Director Krizan, Director Rollwitz, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Motion failed.

There was a discussion of monies paid to the state field representatives.

A discussion was held concerning whether it would be better to have district banquets and workshops compared to a state banquet and workshop. There was also a discussion of some applicants that had purchased two certificates at the same time.

Vice President McBride presented several ideas for new annuity products and whether or not to push the annuity sales.

INCOME AND EXPENSES – Financial Secretary Mikulas compared the income and expenses for the first three months of 2007 to the first three months of 2008. Income increased by 23 percent during this period and expenses increased by 24 percent.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported income is at 29 percent of the budgeted amount and expenses are at 28 percent.

ANNUAL STATEMENT – The annual statement for 2007 was filed with Texas Department of Insurance on February 29, 2008, according to Financial Secretary Mikulas.

WORKSHOP AND AWARDS BANQUET – Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the cost of the incentive banquet and workshop was $442,528.56. That amount does not include District Banquet Dinners for all producing sales agents.

DISTRICT TWO – Director Wuensche presented a request from Lodge 20, Granger for assistance in renovating its lodge hall and a request for assistance for the Taylor Czech Chorus. He requested a change in the local lodge refund to help local lodges with buildings. Legal Advisor Popelka moved, seconded by Director Wuensche, for the officers to study the lodge refund based on merit for active lodges with buildings versus local lodges without buildings. Ideas are to be presented in the July meeting with a recommendation in the October, 2008, meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT THREE – Director Krizan requested the Supreme Lodge send get well wishes to longtime devoted SPJST member and Czech music disc jockey Johnnie I. Krajca. In response to the recent A.M. Best telephone conference advising us to grow slow and steady, Director Krizan moved that the SPJST adopt as a goal for the year the reinforcement of our existing goal of 5 percent growth and a new goal to cut expenses overall in 2008 by 3 percent, seconded

by Director Pflughaupt. Motion passed unanimously. Director Krizan then thanked Directors Wuensche, Victorick, and Bayer for all the extra time and effort they contributed in compiling their respective lapse study reports.

Treasurer Lisa Bubela gave her report on the financial standing of the lodge.

FAC Wanda Dorotik reminded everyone about the End-of-Summer Getaway trip planned to Corpus Christi again this year. Please watch the Vestnik for information on the hotels and events planned for that weekend. She let us know that she did not have any new information due to the early meeting date this month.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela then gave her report on what has been happening with the youth club. She informed the members that the youth would be participating in District Six Camp in June, District Six YAD in July, and State YAD in August. She informed the members of possible changes for the district tour scheduled for August due to hotel requirements.

District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar then reported on the Fayetteville historical marker dedication ceremony and the Bloomin’ Temple Car Show sponsored by SPJST. We then discussed our banquet from last month and some possible changes for next year.

Congratulations to Blake Korenek who received an SPJST scholarship this year.

Under new business, we discussed adopting The Rainbow Room Crisis Center in Wharton as a continuing charity for our lodge.

Lodge 79 Corpus Christi celebrates Motherʼs Day

On May 18, 2008, Lodge 79, Corpus Christi celebrated a belated Mother’s Day with a catered meal of roast beef with all the trimmings.

Each mother was presented a rose.

Brother Jerry Sijansky gave the FAC report and stated the SPJST Home Office would like all members to observe a moment of silence on Memorial Day, May 26, to honor our fallen soldiers and to reflect what Memorial Day means. Brother Sijansky also reported that our lodge delegates are ready for the convention in June.

Brother Jerry Elzner reported that Glen Pruski and his family lost their home and all their belongings in a fire. Each lodge is challenged to donate $100 to the Pruski family.

Lodge 79 met the challenge and also gave its monthly donation of $100 to the Pruski family.

Brother Sijansky stated that Sokol Hall will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in its present building. A dance celebrating this occasion will be on July 13 from 3 to 7 p.m. with Czechaholics providing the music.

The kitchen will be open selling kolaches and other goodies.

Birthday celebrant for the month was Ruth Marek. We all sang “Happy Birthday” to Ruth.

Our monthly $25 door prizes were won by Meredith Isle and Ruth Marek.

Next Meeting—June 15 Out next meeting will be June 15.

We will be celebrating Father’s Day with beef brisket. Each family is asked to bring a side dish. I hope to see everyone there.

Lodge 84, Dallas plans activities

Dear Members, Our May 19 monthly meeting was brought to order by President Justine Yeager at 7:40 p.m. Sister Bessie Petr led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for three departed members—Brothers Raymond Reznik and Dr. Edward Daly and Sister Vlasta (Flossie) Vita. Members offer sincere sympathy to the families — may your loved ones rest in peace.

Secretary Cherrie Petr read the minutes of the last two meetings as well as correspondence.

A discussion concerning certificate holders that were purchased from any Lodge 84 sales agent— whether they are active or not active members—should keep in touch with Lodge 84 present or future agents and update them on change of address, name change through marriage, change of beneficiaries, and in cases where death has occurred, many beneficiaries have been out of touch and cannot be located should inquire.

These certificates are called orphan certificates. There are several that exist from Lodge 84. It is important to all members whether a certificateholder or a benefactor to update information. At present, our sales agents are Brother Ben Jarma (214) 348-1514; Sister Betty Olson (972) 223-3180; Sister Bessie Petr (214) 826-3557; Brother Gary McManus (972) 524-6123; and Sister Sarah Santoya (972) 271-7272.

Our Join Hands Day found many members giving our lodge yard a huge clean-up. The day before John and Jeri Becan left for a trip and knowing they couldn’t help on Join Hands Day found them trimming hedges and picking up things the wind had blown everywhere. Then the next morning, Sisters Lillie Jones, Martha Frnka, Bessie Petr, Joy McClellan, and Melinda McClellan and Brothers Jim Liska and C.J. Novak were working hard to make our Lodge 84 yard trim and clean.

Lodge 87, Temple plans June 17 membership meal

Dear Members, SPJST Lodge 87, Temple invites all members and their families to join us for a catered meal, fellowship, and awards presentation on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at the lodge hall, located one-quarter mile north of the East Adams Avenue exit on North 50th Street in Temple.

The social begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the meal at 7 p.m.

The meal is being catered by Mungia’s Barbecue of Heidenheimer.

There will be a short business meeting followed by our annual awards ceremony and prize drawing. Many prizes will be given!

Financial Secretary Liz Bielefeld reported on nine new certificates and 11 terminations. Bob Bayer made a motion to accept the new members into Lodge 107. Diane Korus seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Building Committee Chairperson Oscar Korus gave an update regarding the status of the air conditioner and the exit door location. Doug Henke and Ruben primed the front entrance wall of the lodge hall.

Hall Manager Roxanne Bertrand reported on the hall rentals; the calendar has been updated; and the yard has been mowed.

There was no old business.

New business included the following: sales agents meeting/training classes will be conducted at the lodge hall; and a possible benefit fund-raiser to help Glen and Wendy Pruski was discussed and will need followup. Liz Bielefeld made a motion to host the sales agents’ meeting/training classes at the hall free of charge.

Jennifer Carpenter seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Connie Jo Purchis made a motion that the lodge donate $25 towards the Flag Day ceremony at Regency Nursing Home. The money would be used for refreshments. Oscar Korus seconded the motion, and the motion carried.

Lodge 172 Pasadena honors fallen soldiers

President Robert Mayfield opened our meeting on May 25, 2008. He opened with honoring our fallen soldiers who gave their lives so that we can be free. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and had a prayer for our meal and our fallen heroes.

We were honored by a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Chester Jenke, Sr., FICF, our State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. Mr. Jenke broke bread with us and gave us some information about the upcoming convention.

We really appreciate having Mr. Jenke visit our lodge.

Being a holiday weekend, one would not expect everyone there; however, our entire officer staff was in attendance. I think that’s pretty good.

After taking care of some lodge business, we retired to the front of our lodge and in honor of Memorial

Day raised our flag and again said the Pledge. Please see the picture on the front page of this week’s Vestnik.

Lodge 80, Holland member Monk Ivicic recalls Holland Corn Festival origins

Editor’s Note: Bell County Historical Commission Newsletter Committee Chairman Annette Lucksinger contacted SPJST Lodge 80, Holland member Darwin “Monk” Ivicic concerning the history of the Holland Corn Festival.

Phone Darwin “Monk” Ivicic of Holland to ask some questions, and this taciturn TxDOT retiree lets you wonder if you have the right phone number. Then ask him about corn and the Holland Corn Festival, and you’re prepared to write a book — or at least that’s what it feels like.

Ivicic, who served 22 and onehalf years as festival chairman, recalls the beginnings: Sometime before the United States Bicentennial in 1976, local leaders decided to try to make Holland an official Bicentennial City.

Carol Starke was appointed chairman of a committee of about 25 members. National criteria for the designation were studied, among them the need for a local festival.

Holland’s history is agriculture, mainly corn, cotton and milo, Ivicic reminds his caller. Someone suggested a corn festival to be held during the third week in June, that special time when “roastin’ ears” are ready, though the cornstalk is still green. A small percentage of the total crop, this “corn-on-the-cob” meant for farm boy Ivicic that his family had fresh corn two times a day for the approximately threeweek period.

“Not everyone knows that the corn you buy in a can is from roastin’ ears,” Ivicic says. “If you waited until August when the dry corn season starts, you wouldn’t be able to eat it.” In the old days, Ivicic remembers, his mother, Louise Cmerek Ivicic, used a long knife to slice corn kernels from the cob before using a pressure cooker to preserve the corn for later eating.

The majority dry corn crop is harvested for corn meal and feed.

Ivicic wasn’t on the committee formed to get ready for 1976, but in planning a “dress rehearsal” in 1975, he decided he wanted to drive an old John Deere tractor he had

bought and painted. Only problem was that a parade was not on the list of Corn Festival activities. When meetings for the 1976 event began, Ivicic protested the omission and soon acquired the job of parade chairman.

The 1975 “dry run” featured a street dance, attended by fewer than 100 persons and paid for with donations. The take? $68. In 1976, Ivicic protested again.

“Why don’t you have a really nice dance with a decent band?” he asked. The committee didn’t want to pursue his idea, but he persisted and was told to check out the idea.

Holland’s SPJST hall at that time attracted 600 to 800 dancers every other weekend, according to Ivicic.

One of the most popular bands was The Moods, and they agreed to play the Corn Festival for a guaranteed $1,000.

“I told the committee that, at $2.50 a head, just half as many as we had at the SPJST hall would pay for the band,” Ivicic says. Still, the committee balked, but Ivicic says that every time they protested, he answered their concern; he then became street dance chairman, parade chairman and, in addition, was in charge of the bar and bartender scheduling. In 1976, he notes, 1,523 tickets were sold to the dance, “absolutely beyond our wildest dreams.”

After the bicentennial, the committee decided to make Corn Festival an annual event. Starke had four young children at the time, so the committee voted unanimously to make Ivicic chairman. He retired from the job in 1999. Emcee for the festival’s formative years was Holland native and radio personality Gaylon “Corncob” Christie.

Activities for the event include the “world’s champion chicken flying contest,” plus corncob relays, corn seed spitting, corn eating and corncob throwing, today with divisions for men, women and children. By 1979, the street dance attracted some 5,000. “Dancing has been a part of Holland’s history,” Ivicic says. “Holland’s SPJST lodge hall has been a large part of this history.”

Lodge 258, Seguin plans June 22 picnic

Dear Members, The May meeting of Lodge 258, Seguin was spent planning the spring picnic for June 22. The lodge will provide hamburgers and hot dogs while the officers are bringing the condiments, sides, and desserts. We will start at noon, have lunch at 1 p.m. and socialize after the meal. We plan to pitch horseshoes and washers and play dominoes and Bunco.

Plans were also discussed to participate in the Fourth of July parade in Seguin. The youth club will meet the beginning of July to decorate the float. They, along with adult members, will ride in the parade.

We hope to see everyone on Sunday, June 22 at Starke Park in Seguin for a fun picnic!

Ennis Sewing Circle

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on May 8, 2008. Quilters Martha Ritchey, Ann Clagett, Pat Fowler, Dorothy J. Kudrna, Dorothy Prachyl, Bessie Laznovsky, Eleanor Pelzel, Georgie Morales and new member Mary Zabojnik arrived at 8 a.m.

Some stretched the quilt for quilting, and others arranged the table and chairs. Everyone else arrived. Some visited, and others quilted until lunch.

We quilted for Rosie Bednar.

Esther Cunningham led us in prayers, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch. Quilters always get to be first in line.

After lunch, the quilters returned to quilting. The clean-up crew did a great job then President Sadie called the meeting to order. We had 22 members and three guests—Edith Vita, Robert Cunningham, and Julius Podhrasky. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of thoughts and prayers went out to Dorothy J. Kudrna’s son Glen Kudrna and David Nesuda, Dorothy’s brother who both had surgery that day. We wish them both speedy recoveries.

Pat Fowler announced that next month, we will quilt her quilt. In July, we will not quilt. We will have an elephant sale, show and tell, and a prize drawing. In August, we will quilt our Christmas quilt; September - my quilt; October - Eleanora’s quilt; November - Junior Sokol quilt; and in December, we will have a party. (I told you we were booked for the year.) If you have quilt tops to be quilted for 2009, get in touch with Pat. She will put your name down.

At the next meeting in June, we will start selling chances on two of the items donated by Libbie Vrla. We will also sell chances at the July meeting. The drawing will be held at the end of the meeting. If you want chances on the two beautiful white throw pillows, and I think, the plaque from the Czech Republic, don’t miss the next two meetings—and bring money.

Sylvia announced that the Junior Sokol quilt drawing deadline has been extended and will be given at the Ennis Sokol Slet the first weekend in June. Don’t forget, it is a beautiful quilt so buy lots of tickets.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club honors graduating senior

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club had its regular monthly meeting on April 29, 2008, at Mr. Gatti’s. The meeting began at 6:45 p.m. when President Kenna Bubela called it to order.

Danielle Zalman led the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Steven Drapela called the roll call and read the minutes for last month’s meeting.

Youth Leader Lisa Bubela informed everyone of possible changes to the district tour in August.

We were asked to give other possible locations for our tour. Some of us wanted to go ice skating in Houston.

Our next meeting will be on June 1 at Taition Community Center at 2:30 p.m. Everyone needs to bring their YAD cards to turn in.

How to get kids to enjoy outdoor activities

Get out there and do something!

All too often our families — especially kids — spend their time holed up indoors watching television, playing video games, or surfing the Internet.

Take advantage of the season to come up with new ways to get the family interested in outdoor activities and outings.

“Getting out and moving around is a great way for both adults and children to get or stay healthy. Children not only discover nature’s wonders during outdoor activities, but getting out is a great way for them to avoid obesity and other ailments,” said Mark J. Stevens, author of the new book, “Luisa’s Nature.”

Here are some ideas from Stevens on how you can make it more interesting for kids to get out and get active: Lead by example.

If you’re interested in the outdoors, half the battle is won. Just be yourself, get out, and enjoy nature.

Children will sense your enjoyment and will follow. Pretty soon, your children will be pulling YOU off the couch to jog on that moss-bedded forest path, jump from rock to rock along the stream, or simply enjoy the sights and sounds of daily family walks.

Offer habit and variety.

Children love ritual. So take walks along the same path. But also offer variety. Take a bike ride on a new path, go for a swim in a different lake, or ride a pony together. Your kids will continue to feel the warmth of the better-known “home” path. But an occasional change of pace will help expand their horizons and wake their curiosity even more.

Use books about nature and adventures to get kids interested.

Make reading together a routine and choose children’s books about nature exploration. Let your child select a favorite character from each book. Discuss that character’s discoveries in nature. If the character made discoveries that you can realistically see or do in nature nearby, make that your goal on your next outing. For instance, Winnie the Pooh and his friends set out in one book to find the North Pole. The pole turned out to be a long branch that they loudly declared the North Pole.

Make it fun.

Your goals in nature don’t always have to be serious or scientific. It’s about having fun and bonding. The stories you read and goals you set before outdoor activities together give you something to refer to during walks or swims — even something to be silly and laugh about.

Sit down and talk.

Sitting at the dinner table can sometimes be boring for kids. But if you talk about the color of flowers they saw, or the height of grass in a meadow they explored, a visual world

In Memoriam

In Memory of Charlie Pavelka

Charles Wilbur Pavelka, 86, of Mart, Texas, took the Lord’s hand and entered into eternal life with his loving wife Ruby on Tuesday May 20, 2008, after a hard fought battle with cancer.

Charlie was born the second child of Willie and Valasta (nee A d a m e k ) Pavelka on Charlie Pavelka December 8, 1921, in a little house near Elk, Texas, and was baptized May 11, 1924, into the Christian faith. He was blessed with brothers and sister: Eldon, Edwin, Bobby (Robert), and Willie Mae. As a young boy, he attended school in McLennan County. Charlie entered the United States Army during World War II. Serving with the 36th Division in Italy and North Africa, he proudly served four years for his country. He was proud to be an American.

After returning from the war, he met and married the love of his life, Ruby Lee Kunkel, on October 17, 1946. Just prior to their marriage in 1946, Charlie confirmed his Christian faith at Grace Lutheran Church. From this union, they had four children—Gene, Betty, Donnie, and Randy. Charlie started out farming after buying a farm near Hallsburg, Texas, which he and Ruby never left. As times got hard, Charlie in 1950 went to work at General Tire and Rubber Company retiring after 30 years. He often spoke of his many friends he made while working there.

Like his wife Ruby, Charlie loved to have family gatherings. Holidays were always special at the Pavelka house with lots of food, fun, and domino games, and children everywhere! Charlie’s family was his life—he worked hard providing for them. His grandchildren brought him great joy. It was always special to get bubble gum from Papah Charlie! It brought him great joy when their little faces lit up. Charlie’s hobby was his garden. He loved to plant and work his garden. Even after he became ill, he still wanted his children to plant a little garden for him to watch grow.

Charlie will be greatly missed by

all his loved ones. Those special memories his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren shared with him will never be forgotten. His memories will forever remain in our hearts and souls. Charlie was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Mart; SPJST Lodge 35, Elk where he and wife Ruby danced many polkas; and a lifetime member of the VFW in Mart.

He was a very dedicated SPJST member. He, along with his family, volunteered many hours of work at Elk hall.

His parents; wife Ruby; sister Willie Mae Veselka; brother Edwin Pavelka; and great-granddaughter Alyssa Brown all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his children Gene Pavelka and wife Barbara of Hallsburg, Donnie Pavelka and wife Cindy of Axtell, Randy Pavelka and wife Carla of Hallsburg, and Betty Brown and husband Lynn of Chilton; brothers Eldon Pavelka and wife Dorothy of West, and Bobby Pavelka of Abbott; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Grace Lander of Lacy Lakeview, Dorothy Banik and Elizabeth Kunkel, both of Elm Mott, and Helen Dulock of Leroy; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 2 p.m.

Saturday, May 24 at Grace Lutheran Church in Mart with Pastor Robert Kitson and Reverend Eldor Harmann officiating. Burial was at the SPJST Pavelka Cemetery. Visitation was Friday, May 23 at Bellmead Funeral Home.

Charlie’s family requests that memorials for him be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 106 South Carpenter, Mart, Texas 76664.

In Memory of Angelina Trlica

Mrs. Angelina Lillian Trlica, age 92, of Beeville, died on Monday, April 21, 2008.

She was a homemaker and retired rancher. She was born on September 5, 1915 in Bee County to the late Frank Jancha and Lillie Sugarek Jancha. She was married on August 29, 1935, in Tynan to Clifton Oscar Trlica, Sr., who preceded her in death on December 14, 1982. She was a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 26, Skidmore and was very active with the Skidmore-Tynan 4-H. She is survived by daughters, Arline Trial and husband Joe and Marilyn Fehlis, both of Victoria; brothers, Frank Jancha of Skidmore and William Jancha of Buda; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Clifton Oscar Trlica, Jr.; grandson Mark Paul Trlica; sister Lillie Mae Naylor; and brother George Jancha.

Visitation was on Thursday, April 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Chapel. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25 at Faith Lutheran Church. Interment followed at Beeville Memorial Park.

Billie Lee (Bill) Haak of Hempstead, Texas, age 77, departed from his earthly life and entered into his heavenly home on Monday, May 12, 2008.

Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, May 14 at Canon Funeral Home in Waller, Texas.

Funeral service was at 2 p.m., May 15 at Canon Funeral Home.

Interment immediately followed at the Hempstead Cemetery in Hempstead, Texas.

Bill was born December 13, 1930, at Pattison, Texas, to Willie Howard Haak and Mabel Keuneke Haak.

Bill worked for the Waller County Road and Bridge Department for 41 and one-half years; he retired on December 31, 1992. He loved his job and the many friends that he made, both his co-workers and the friends he met while working on the roads.

Bill always took pride in his work.

Since retiring, Bill enjoyed his cattle, playing dominoes, and working with his hands repairing old equipment, tools, etc.

Bill was a member of SPJST Lodge 169, Brenham and will be greatly missed.

Bill was baptized as a child of God on March 15, 1931, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Pattison, Texas, and was confirmed at the same church on February 24, 1952. On April 6, 1952, Bill and Johnnie were married at Christ Lutheran Church. On November 26, 1967, Bill and Johnnie transferred their church membership to Trinity Lutheran Church in Hempstead where they were active members.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Johnnie Lou Schmidt Haak; aunt Elsie Mae Keuneke of Brookshire, Texas; brother-in-law Gerald Stanley Schmidt and wife Paulette of Monaville; sisters-in-law Myrtle Carson and Ruth Karisch Connett of Hempstead, Judith Smith of Floresville, and Patsy Dotson of Providence Village, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces/ nephews too numerous to name, but each one special to him; he treasured the times that he spent with each of them.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brother Alfred Haak; and sisters Willie Mae Mikeska and Helen Berry.

The family requests that memorials be given in Bill’s memory to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1906 Eighth Street, Hempstead, Texas 77445.

The Saucy Lesson The ABC of Czech

Welcome to the ABC of Czech.

We will explore Czech vocabulary related to Czech food and cuisine.

Today, we'll give you a taste of Czech sauces - omáčky.

Rajská omáčka

Sauces in Czech cuisine are not something that you just pour over the meat - they are a central part of the meal and often the dish is named after the sauce. So if the menu in a typical Czech restaurant offers, for example, dill sauce, expect to be served beef - hovězí maso and a heap of bread dumplings - houskové knedlíky swimming in a thick creamy sauce.

Probably the most popular is rajská omáčka - tomato sauce, but literally paradise sauce because tomatoes in Czech are called "paradise apples" - rajská jablíčka. The sauce is red and sweet, and children are crazy about it (less so of the beef and dumplings, though).

Competing with tomato sauce is

svíčková omáčka - literally candle soup, called after beef tenderloin which in Czech is svíce (meaning candle) or svíčková. The meat is baked with root vegetables which are then blended and cream can be added to the sauce. It's then served with dumplings, and preserved cranberries and whipped cream to garnish.

Then there is dill sauce - koprová omáčka - the scourge of schools and kindergartens. Hated by nine kids out of 10, but still regularly served in school canteens. The meal again involves boiled beef and bread dumplings, swimming in creamy sauce with plenty of dill. The vegetarian variety features a boiled egg instead of the meat.

Svíčková omáčka

Mushroom sauce - houbová omáčka is similar, only with mushrooms instead of dill and much more popular. And so is okurková omáčka - gherkin sauce, again beef meat,

dumplings and plenty of creamy sauce flavoured with finely chopped gherkins.

Koprová omáčka

The standard portion of any Czech omáčka meal includes four slices of a dumpling. But, of course,, you can order more. So to sound like a real local you have to order svíčkovou se šesti - candle sauce with six (meaning dumplings).

The Texas Polka Music Museum is now accepting donations of Texas polka band, musician and polka disc jockey memorabilia. The museum’s mission is to preserve the history of polka music in Texas. Items of interest are, but are not limited to, instruments, band uniforms, recorded music—especially recordings not released—music and words used in performances, photos of bands, band schedules, and information about band members.
