Lodge 88, Houston Youth Group brings Camp Kubena spirit to Houston
In 2023, Lodge 88, Houston Youth Group approached the adults with a request to add some new activities to our backyard. The eight of us, who enjoyed Camp Kubena over the last few years, wanted to bring a slice of that outdoor fun to our friends at our home lodge. The adults were supportive and unanimously voted “yes” to our idea!
Over the next year, we carefully selected the right priced and appropriately sized equipment for our lodge backyard. This fall, I am thrilled to report that we’ve all had a blast playing nine square, gaga ball, and tether ball — activities our families helped install. In fact, these new games are so popular that our playground is often empty as everyone is busy with the new equipment!
We now have an adult committee working to create a more permanent indoor space for our youth meetings and social hangouts. We are all looking forward to it. So, stay tuned to see if our ideas for installing a disco ball - among other fun things we’ve requested - come to life.

TOCA invites SPJST lodges to participate in 2025 Awards Reception and Banquet
Annually – from 1987 through 2018 – SPJST honored its outstanding fraternalists through its Fraternalist of the Year Program. The objective was to extend grateful acknowledgment to individuals who had demonstrated outstanding service to the lodge or the community. It was a good program; however, waning participation prompted the Society to discontinue it in 2019.
Since that time – and on an annual basis – Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) – an umbrella organization that serves to improve and facilitate communication among Czech-oriented organizations – have hosted an annual celebration on the grounds of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. This event recognizes organization volunteers who have displayed exemplary leadership towards the preservation and/or invigoration of Czech heritage throughout the state. Since the TOCA program seeks to commend volunteers for a job well done, it is somewhat reminiscent of SPJST’s old Fraternalist of the Year program.
Meeting in La Grange, Texas, on January 19, TOCA representatives voted to open their annual Appreciation Awards Reception and Banquet in 2025 to include honorees from SPJST, KJT, KJZT, and Czech Heritage Society of Texas local chapters. SPJST President/ CEO Brian Vanicek and SPJST Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny both serve as representatives to TOCA.
The primary criteria for a lodge to consider when submitting an individual
or couple for recognition are that the nominee has demonstrated longstanding commitment and made a notable impact on the preservation and/or invigoration of Czech heritage in Texas. Lodges wishing to participate in the 2025 TOCA program are requested to submit their honoree’s photo and 100-word biographical sketch to the attention of Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny by US mail (PO Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503-0100) or email (melanie@spjst.com) on or before Saturday, March 1, 2025.
All honorees will be recognized at the TOCA Appreciation Awards Reception and Banquet, which will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Pavilion located on the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center campus in La Grange. The event will begin at 4 p.m. with a Wine and Cheese Reception hosted by SPJST, followed by the awards program at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Event tickets are $15 each, and lodges are not limited in the number of guests who may attend. Checks may be made payable to “TOCA” and mailed to TOCA, c/o Kevin Kana, PO Box 297, La Grange, Texas 78945. Please include your SPJST Lodge name and number and each attendee’s name. RSVP deadline is Saturday, March 1.
For more information, please contact Vice President of Communications Melanie Zavodny at 254-534-0807 or by email at melaniez@spjst.com.

It’s Your Life
Play It Again, Sam!
We are thrilled to announce the continuation of our lodge referral incentives. This year, we’re expanding your opportunities to earn money for the lodge and grow SPJST membership. Here’s how it works:
1. Earn 1 point for each certificate issued to an existing member.
2. Earn 2 points for each new member an agent writes up in your lodge.
3. Earn 3 points for each new person a lodge member refers using the QR code on the referral card. When that person secures a life certificate or annuity, your lodge earns the 3 points.
Lodge Incentive Rewards
• Earn 7 points in a month and receive a $100 check
• Earn 25 points in a month and receive a $250 check
Note: Points are only counted after the certificate is issued, with payouts made quarterly. We’ll post the results monthly in the Vestnik.
Tips to Boost Referrals
1. Utilize Referral Cards: Hand out referral cards at meetings. The QR code allows immediate digital input—no need for mail, and no worries about lost cards or illegible handwriting. Carry one card and your phone to capture opportunities anytime, anywhere.
2. Engage with Agents: Invite agents and Territory Managers (TMs) to your meetings. If your lodge doesn’t have a designated agent, ask your Territory Manager to invite one. Remember, over 130 agents are ready to support all lodges.
3. Visibility: Place referral cards prominently wherever you meet. Coordinate with restaurants, community centers, and
other venues to leave cards and our new benefits brochure on their counters.
4. Personal Interactions: Offer a referral card anytime insurance or lodge events come up in conversations with friends and relatives.
5. Host Seminars: Work with Delisle or your Territory Manager to organize seminars or free insurance reviews for the community, at your lodge or in other community spaces. We will organize the
Membership Referral Card
event and advertise it for you. We will help pick the best topic for your community or bring agents to do the free reviews.
6. Sponsor Events: We’re eager to boost our visibility in your community and will support your involvement in local events.
7. Organize Community Events: Whether it’s a fundraiser or a drive for food, clothing, or pet supplies, we encourage you to set up events that benefit the community. Partner with local businesses for venue space.
8. Leverage Your Lodge: Allow nonprofit organizations to use your lodge for their events, enhancing visibility and community integration.
Earn 1 point for every certificate issued to an existing member.
9. Dine Together: Organize dinners for friends and members at local restaurants. We’ll support the advertising and funding; you find the venue (25 to 40 people).
We’ve made it easier than ever to build your membership. Remember, we’re here to help, so don’t hesitate to reach out.

4 Vet-Approved Tips to Show Your Pets Love this Valentine’s Day
(Family Features) For pet parents in the United States, Valentine’s Day is another chance to shower their pets with love. This Valentine’s Day, animal lovers can show their affection in special ways.
Extra attention and extra playtime may be in store, but Americans are expected to spend a record $27.5 billion this Valentine’s Day, 32 percent of whom plan to purchase gifts for their pets, according to an annual survey conducted by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.
“Dogs are very in tune with their pet parents’ emotions,” said Dr Aziza Glass, expert vet for Freshpet. “Pups are sure to feel the love from the actions and little things pet parents do.”
Consider these vet-recommended ways to show your pets just how much you love them:
Lodge 17, New Tabor participates in Food for Families drive
Lodge 17, New Tabor members donated money and 277 pounds of nonperishable food items to Food For Families Food Drive to help residents of Burleson County. The lodge was also featured live on television’s KBTX News 3. —Holly Narro, FAC/Youth Leader
Cook a batch of pet-friendly treats: Since the classic Valentine’s Day gifts of chocolate and candies are out of the question for dogs, homemade treats are a great alternative. Dehydrated veggies and fruit treats are easy options. All you need to do is choose pet-safe fruits and vegetables and bake them for a few hours. Some pet-friendly foods include strawberries (loaded with vitamins C, B1, B6, K and more), cranberries (include antioxidants to help prevent inflammation) and beets (packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals).
Switch to a fresh, healthy diet: The way to your pet’s heart is often through his or her stomach. One of the best ways you can show your love is by making the switch to fresh food like Freshpet, the leading fresh pet food brand. Freshpet is not only nutritious, but also made with fresh meat and veggies, so it’s great for picky eaters.
Create sustainable DIY toys: Sure, you can buy your pup a new toy this Val-
entine’s Day, or you can make your own with items lying around your house. It’s quick and easy to make a crinkle chew toy. If your dog likes that crinkle sound, try covering an empty plastic water bottle with a sock or two. Your dog will go nuts for the sounds it makes when chewing and it’s a green way to reuse before recycling.
Plan a doggie play date: Socialization is important for everyone – dogs and humans alike. Head to a nearby dog park or plan a play date with some neighborhood friends to get your dog out and playing with others. In addition to providing an excuse to run around with friends, your pup will thank you for it later.
By sharing these thoughtful gestures, dogs will be showering their pet parents with kisses, which triggers endorphins in both dogs and humans, reinforcing the bond between the two even more.
