Times Change; Principles Don't A Day to Remember Next Monday, February 17, is Presidents' Day -- a work day for some; a vacation day for others. More than that, it's an opportunity for us to pause and commemorate the lives of two of our nation's greatest presidents - George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Born February 22, 1732, George Washington acquired early in life a distaste for a political system lacking in both leadership and principles. Washington's resentment was further heightened by the arrogance displayed by his British commanders while he served in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War. As the commander of the Continental Army, General Washington proved to be an uncommonly resourceful general, keeping his ragtag army together through Washington years of defeat, retreat and hard winters to outlast the British and finally to prevail at Yorktown in 1781. Here, as in all his life, Washington earned respect for his judgement, dignity and leadership. Retiring to Mount Vernon after the war, he was later compelled to return to public life in order to help chart a course for our fledgling democracy. In 1787, he presided over the Constitutional Convention n Philadelphia, which framed the presidency with him in mind. He went on to become the only president ever elected unanimously in the electoral college --- and he did it twice. As president, Washington successfully implemented his executive powers and made it his job to mediate between conflicting groups and opinions. Although it ran counter to the prejudices aroused by the war, Washington did not hesitate to make a treaty cementing peace with Great Britain. He believed that principle was everything and that national policy had to have a moral value. Abraham Lincoln was also a man of high principle. Born in a log cabin in Kentucky on February 12, 1809, Lincoln acquired barely a year of formal education as a child, although he did learn to write and developed a fondness for reading. At age 19, Lincoln worked his way down the
Mississippi River in various jobs, coming away from the experience thoroughly appalled at slavery. As our nation's 16th President, Abraham Lincoln expressed and believed in the grand idea that all men are created equal. Moreover, he stated his beliefs in simple, yet eloquent words - as he did when he the addressed 166th Ohio Regiment late in the summer of 1864. After stressing that a Union victory in the conflict would perpetuate a "great and free government," he made a humble appeal to the battle-scarred soldiers. "I beg you to remember this," he said, "not merely for my sake, but for yours, I happen, temporarily, to occupy the White House. I am a living witness that any of your children may look to come here as my father's child has." "I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true: I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have. I must sand with anybody that Lincoln stands right -stand with him when he is right and part with him when he goes wrong." In addition to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, the United States has produced a multitude of great men and women in various fields of human endeavor. Within our own ranks, the SPJST has also been fortunate to have had its share of leaders and visionaries -- men and women who have championed the principles of integrity and fair play in support of our fraternal system. As a result, the SPJST and fraternalism has been a source of strength to many SPJST members over the years.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville reports on January meeting Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, January 12, 2003 at the Legion Tap Room at 2 p.m. with Helen Zabransky and Patsy Zabransky as greeters. President Joe Siptak opened the meeting followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Welcomed were guests District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and his wife, Kathy. Director Ahlstrom then installed the officers for 2003. He then spoke to the mem bers on upcoming SPJST events and encouraged the members to work together to achieve our membership goal for Outreach 2003. Secretary Mary Ann Sustaita read the minutes to the last meeting and the correspondence. Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave the financial report. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Annie Vahalik gave a report and reminded the members that January, February, and March birthdays will be recognized at the next meeting. It was voted to have lunch served after every meeting from now on. It was agreed to have games at the February meeting. Sunshine Co-Chairman Margaret Smotek reported on the bingo at Stevens Convalescent Center and inroom visits at Hallettsville Rehab and Nursing Center. Lifetime Achievers Named Nominations for the SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award to be given at the District Six Spring Meeting were made. Our lodge recipients will be Annie Vahalik, Margaret Smotek, Patsy Zabransky, Victoria Zak, and Philip Vahalik.

Lodge 18, Elgin installs officers at January meeting President Mike Mogonye opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment silent prayer for all SPJST members. All officers were present with the exception of Youth Leader Ruby Bowen who was ill. Diane read the minutes. Glen gave the treasurer's report. Both were accepted as read. Charles gave the bar report, Gladys gave the ticket report, Irene H. thanked everyone who helped decorate and take down the decorations. We had many comments on how great the hall looked for the holidays. Donnie read the minutes from the board meeting. We have a new stove and another will be purchased. The board is getting bids for installing a new floor for the kitchen. Several members have been working on the ceiling tiles. Thanks to Dud, Charles, Arthur, and Johnny, the hall is looking great. Agnes will be sending reminders for the 2003 membership dues. Aleen read a letter from the Home Office. The appreciation banquet will be February 22. We need a count on how many will attend. Please let Aleen know if you want to attend. The audit committee—Joe Haisler, Ruben Krieg, and Alex Rohlke reported the books were in order. Our lodge is doing very well. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who come to help. The January 6 meeting held here by Gladys Yates form the Home Office was very well attended with 28 members from Granger, Taylor, Round Rock , Beyersville, and Elgin present. Thank you, Gladys. We learned a lot and will look forward to your guidance again. We have one new member who will receive a 50-year pin this year— Harold Gene McVay. If we missed anyone, please let us know. Time gets away form us and we could forget someone.

A letter was read from John J. Engelke to the members if we could donate to the Education and Nature Center. The lodge members will donate $50 to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Lodge 47, Seaton reports on February meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular lodge meeting was held on Sunday, February 2 at 2 p.m. with President Edwin Pechal presiding. The Flag Bearers Neil Rabroker and Josef Morris brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing to respect the memory of our departed sisters, Pauline Bishop and Miladie Malcik and to the Columbia crew of the seven astronauts who lost their lives over Central Texas in the fatal crash. Centennial Planning Adeline Kohutek and Laverne Vanicek are working on the history of the lodge for the 100th anniversary booklet to commemorate the happenings in the past years to the present. Adeline has sent out the letters asking for donations of ads from other lodges and business associates. Appreciation Dance April 12 Another event for the lodge is the free appreciation dance planned for Sunday, April 12 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. with Bobby Jones Band from Wharton playing. The past presidents are paying for the band. So be sure to circle that date on your calendar, and be sure to come for a great time. Everyone is invited.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje to host fund raiser El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 is having a fund raising prize drawing on March 9. The idea was brought up by members to help with some needed repairs to our lodge hall. We had great success on getting donations from our members along with area businesses in our community. 6NESTNIK—Wednesday, February 12, 2003 The incentive banquet and workshop for the entire state is going to be held on Saturday, February 22 at our lodge. Be sure to send your representatives' names to the Supreme Lodge so the number of persons are accounted for the meal. An accurate amount is necessary for the caterer. We will accommodate those coming hungry. Hamburgers and french fries will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the beginning of the workshop. We will be seeing you then. Fund Raiser March 1 Our annual fund raiser will be on Saturday, March 1. We are giving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up. Tickets are available from the lodge membership. There will be a silent auction and items will be needed for that and help will be needed in the kitchen with food preparations. Because of the fund raiser, our March meeting will be on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. The youth club is meeting at 6:30 p.m. also on the same date. So be sure to mark this on your calendar. We will be cleaning after the pick-up give-away on the regular Sunday date. The date of the awarding of the 50year pins will be Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. There is going to be a picture taking of the youth club at the adult membership then a combination of both. These pictures will be in our souvenir booklet. So if you want to
see yourself in the booklet, come for the photograph-taking on Sunday, April 6. District Meeting March 16 Frank Klinkovsky spoke on the District Two Spring Meeting at Lodge 24, Cyclone on March 16 for which we voted to donate $100 toward the expenses of the meeting to the district treasurer. Youth Leader Heidi Bartek and the youth club came to the adult meeting and presented Valentines and candy to everyone. Thank you, youth club. Willie Kohutek presented the audit report for the fourth quarter of 2002. The audit committee also met to inventory the bar contents from Rosemary Chudej to David and Tammy Pechal, new bar chairpersons. Rosemary gave the January report for the bar. Kitchen and tickets had no reports because no dances were scheduled for January. The meeting about the 100th anniversary was held on Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. It is always the Wednesday following the meeting. February birthdays will be observed by Edwin Pechal, James Skrabanek, and Freddie Schroeder. There were no anniversaries this month. Hope the three had a special day planned to celebrate. Door prize winners were Calvin Skrabanek, Helen Wiley, and Ora Helms.

Lodge 81, Needville reports on January meeting On January 19, 2003, SPJST Lodge 81, Needville met for its monthly social and meeting. At 12 p.m., a prayer of thanks was given, and everyone enjoyed a meal of potluck with delicious side dishes and desserts. Also, thanks to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything done in the kitchen. A big thanks goes to everyone else who brought all of the main dishes, side dishes and desserts. At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman opened the meeting. Gilbert Walzel led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. Added to our sick list are: Louise Newman, Florine Kulcak, and Milton Blinka and some of our social members Fritz Koehne and Sara Stewart. We all wish you a speedy recovery. Next, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel reported that the books are ready to be turned in to the CPA office for the 2002 income tax return. Then, a motion was made to allow the cleaning crew to store their mops in the youth room. The motion passed. Congratulations, Bradley! Under other business, to everyone's delight, State Representative, Lynn Johnsen presented Bradley Stavinoha with a laptop computer. He won this by making his quota and getting his name in the drawing. Congratulations, Bradley! Lynn Johnsen also told the members about the awards banquet on February 22 at Seaton Star Hall. Also under other business, Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall mentioned the 50-year members. A motion was made to have a special presentation at our April meeting for these people. It was decided that the April meeting will be held on. April 13 due to Easter falling on our regular meeting day. It was decided to talk more about the 50-year presentation at the February or March meeting. It was time for our door prizes. Lucky winners for this month were: Jeanette Newman, Vincent Newman, Winifred Susan, and Ed Kuban. Congratulations to these winners! Lodge 169, Brenham reports on annual meeting Brenham Lodge 169, met on January 21, 2003 at the Farm Bureau meeting room with a chicken stew supper. After the meal, Sister Mary Januszewski, President, called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance said by all. Then she introduced the visitors, District One Brother Donnie Victorick and wife who were present for our meeting. We thank them for attending. Sister Glenda Weyand was introduced as our new sales representative for Lodge 169. We were very happy to meet her. Then it was time for the election of officers. As usual, no one wanted to take the job of president, so goodhearted Sister Januszewski accepted the office again. Sister Annette Bilski was elected vice president. Sister Freida Bednar asked to be relieved of her job as secretary for 25 years so we accepted her resignation and would like to thank Freida for her years of service to our lodge. Brother Steven Bliznak was elected to be the secretary. Sister Glenda Weyand volunteered to be our treasurer so thanks to her. Brother Leroy Kamas was elected to be the reporter. Door prizes brought by Brother Victorick were won by several individuals. We thank him for donating the prizes. Thanks to our visitor Angie Kluck for bringing a cake for dessert. Warrenton Lodge 179 met on January 9 at the Lions Building in Carmine at 7 p.m. for its first meeting of the new year. New officers gave their reports and balances. Bill Orsak, District One State Field Representative, attended and encouraged us to try to get ten new members in 2003. He also brought door prizes. Ricky Weyand stressed the importance of the scholarship fund. Having January birthdays were LaVerne Kunkel, Ricky Weyand, and Leroy Levien. The meeting of January 13 was called to order by our President Antonette Pustejovsky. All officers were present with the exception of Pat Sill who was ill. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Dorothy Adamick requested a moment of silence for the repose of the souls of Terry Bragg Skelton, daughter of Charley Bragg and Raymond Rejcek brother of Rudolph Rejcek. Minutes were read by Daniel Roznovsky and were approved. Financial report was given by Robert Sill. A sign for our building was discussed by Kenneth Cepak. After discussion, Johnny Adamick made a motion to purchase a lighted sign for

The motion was approved. Johnny Adamick reported that our hardwood floor was in bad shape, and that it needed a sealer. Johnny had a bid for $1,000. We voted to have the floor sealed. Daniel Roznovsky suggested that we send a check for $100 for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund to the Home Office. This motion passed. Lodge to Assist Veteran Motion was made by Rita Mardis that we donate $200 to a homeless Vietnam Veteran who is now in a nursing home. This money would be used to buy pajamas, robe and house shoes. This motion passed. Kay Weeks, our Youth Leader, reported that we now have ten active youth members, and she advised that on January 3, that seven members attended a lock-in at Lodge 84 in Dallas. They had a great time, and on January 4, they attended Six Flags Over Texas. Everyone had a great time. We had District Three Director Johnnie Krizan as our guest at this meeting and as usual, we were delighted to have him. Lodge 196, Jednota, Houston-West held its January meeting on January 26th. This was a rather long meeting„ as we had a lot of housekeeping things to discuss. This was because we skipped the November meeting for our Member Appreciation dinner and rushed through the December meeting so we could eat our Christmas dinner. We had good attendance at our January meeting - 22 members were present If you weren't among them,
we missed you and hope you'll come in February. January is earmarked as our "Annual Meeting" so we had election of officers. No. 2, Needville reports on activities S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville, Texas welcomes new resident Lucille Grudziecki. We are happy to have her. Every Monday morning, Olie Eixmann, Ruby Lee Oberhoff, LaVerne Tielke, Erwin and Marcie Kroll, Willie mae Tielke, Viola Fuchs, Helen Whitten, Charles Euton, Edgar and Sharon Wendt, W. Lee and Barbara Schmidt, Shirley Wendt,
Clara Narramore, Alice Bergen, Albert and Lauriane Ognoskie, Mildred Novak,and Bunnie Walenta come to have sing-a-long. On Tuesday afternoons, "Tonie" Kramer, Viola Kutej, and Olga Anders come to have bingo, and on Wednesday mornings, different churches come to have services for the residents. Father Ramsey, Milton Lengendre, Dorothy Bernshausen, "Tonie" Zatopek, and Olga Anders come on Thursday mornings to have Catholic Mass. Bingo is played on Saturday mornings led by Freda Klawitter and Henrietta Rosenbaum. Saturday, December 7,2002 the Blue Barron 4-H group donated a live Christmas tree, decorated it, brought fruit, and sang Christmas carols for the residents. The Christmas tree was beautifully decorated. Cub Scout Pack 129 visited on Sunday afternoon, December 8 and sang carols. S.t Michael's Altar
Society brought gifts, punch, and cookies for the residents. They also sang carols. Tuesday mornings, December 17 and 24, Frank Ramos came to have Bible study and brought gifts for the residents. Needville Middle and Junior High Schools brought all the residents lap robes on Tuesday, December 10. The lap robes were very beautiful. The following day, Wednesday, December 11, the Needville Junior High returned to hang Christmas decorations which they had made for the residents. The Christmas stockings were beautiful. That evening, St. Paul's Church came to carol. The residents held their Christmas party December 14. The Needville Jaycees brought gifts and provided Santa Claus. They also provided the meal for the residents on Christmas Day. Entertainment was provided by Dan and Greg Pavlas. They did a good job. Food was provided by kitchen and some family members. It was enjoyed by all. The Rosenberg Brethren Church came to carol on Sunday, December 15; Monday, December 16, Ed Pisklak provided music on the accordion; and Tuesday, December 17, George Lolley, Larry Ognoskie, and Fritz Koehne provided music and singing for the residents. Catherine Ross with the Ombudsman Program brought gifts
for each resident on Wednesday afternoon, December 18. In the evening, the First Baptist Church of Needville came to carol. Thursday, December 19, Garland Hurtye and Mary Goffinett brought "Missy" for pet therapy. They also brought homemade cookies for the residents. Saturday afternoon, December 21, the Lodge 88 Czech Singers of Houston, Texas provided singing for the staff and residents. Refreshments were served afterwards. In addition, Diane Marcineli with the Social Security Administration brought gifts for the residents, and the Needville FCA sang carols on Monday, December 23. On Friday afternoon, December 27, the birthday party was held. Cake and coffee was served to all. Staff and residents sang Happy Birthday to residents Paula Rosenbaum and Laura Stade. Youth Letters Section District Two Youth Counselor invites youngsters to Saturday lock-in District Two Members, Greetings! Youth Club members enjoy skating party at Silver Wings Ballroom Dear Readers, On February 2, 2003, the New Tabor Youth Club went to Silver Wings Ballroom. Before we left, we had a meal and a meeting. The meal was great, especially my mom's chicken casserole and somebody's chocolate cake. After the meeting, we went skating at Silver Wings. While we were there, I saw a woman go down one of the ramps, she lost her balance and fell. Her legs flew up into the air. All the while, I was trying to keep a straight face. Valentine's Day section appeared in 1995 — that much we know! Beyond that, we referenced the History Channel website for the straight scoop on this day of love and affection. Much of the history of Valentine's Day, we learned, is shrouded in mystery. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailer daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. The Roman "lottery" system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. In Greek mythology, Cupid is known as Aphrodite's son, Eros. February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's Day — ► should be a day for romance. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seven' teenth century. By the middle of the eighF teenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. t Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest cardsending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, ROSEMARY BANIK, of West, Texas who died Monday. December 9, 2002 at the age of 65. Rosary was recited Wednesday, December 11 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Isidore Rozycki officiating. Mass of Christian Burial took place on Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West with the Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial took place at St. Mary's Cemetery. Sister Rosemary was born in West and attended St. Mary's School and West High School. She married Albert Lee Banik in 1955 in Tours. She worked for Hillcrest Clinic as a receptionist for 14 years and retired in June 2002. She also was a cafeteria manager at West JSD for 16 years and St. Mary's School Cafeteria. Rosemary was a homemaker and loved cooking, sewing, and making wedding cakes. She served as chairman of Westfest Kolache Baking Contest held each year She was a member of KJZT Society 11; Catholic Daughters of America Court 829; lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in West; and an active member of Lodge 66 since August 1964. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Banik who passed away March 1988. Survivors include her husband of 47 years. Albert Banik of West; sons, Darrin and wife, Torie of West and Eddie and wife, Marilyn of China Spring; daughters, Cyndy Dunlap and husband, Joe of Mount Calm, Denise McCauley and husband. Expression of Sympathy The members of Lodge 35, Elk, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family of our departed brother, EDWIN JOE PAVEL KA, age 79, of Waco who died Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at a Temple hospital. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 4 at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Reverend Monsignor Mark Deering officiating. Burial was at Waco Memorial Park North. Mr. Pavelka was born September 10, 1923 in Mart, Texas. He married Leona Klish on June 30, 1947 in West. Beginning on December 7, 1942, he served in the Army Air Corps and flew on 35 bombing missions. Mr. Pavelka continued his military career in the Air Force until his retirement in 1968, achieving the rank of chief master sergeant. Since his retirement, he had resided in Waco. He was preceded in death by his wife; and daughter, Carolyn Pack. Survivors include daughter, Michele Aranda and Carolyn Pavelka; sons, David Pavelka and wife, Tamera and Paul Pavelka and wife, Suzi; sister, Willie Mae Veselka; brothers, Charlie Pavelka, Robert Pavelka, and Eldon Pavelka; eight-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to American Living Association. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, who lived his life with strength, kindness, and honor. May he rest in peace. Resolution of Sympathy Ruby Nell Bowen passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 22, 2003. She was born to Euell and Ruby Ola Nance Turner on February 3, 1942. She was the fourth child of five for Euell and Ruby. She grew up in the Pleasant Grove community where it was known from an early age that Ruby Nell \\, as a very giving and helping person. She adored her parents as a child and much later in life gave of herself while caring for Ruby Bowen both her ailing parents. She, graduated from Elgin High School in May of 1960 and married Joe Ray Bowen February 5, 1960. Much can be said of her self-sacrificing characteristics. Ruby Nell was more interested in making sure everyone else around her was taken care of first. Ruby Nell was a devoted mother, grandmother, and beloved member of the Elgin community. She followed her children through school by literally watching over each of them as a cook for the Elgin Independent School District (EISD). As her children progressed through school, she too would progress by moving from the primary school up to the high school cafeterias so that she would remain close to her children. She supported school functions for each of her children and was the chauffeur transporting each of her children to where they needed to be— sometimes late, but nevertheless, getting them to their functions. She cheered on the home team as her children participated in the numerous extra curricular activities at EISD. Aside from school activities, Ruby Nell was a Girl Scout leader as her daughters participated in the scouting program. When the twins were old enough to participate, she became a Cub Scout leader. She also was a Little League softball coach as her daughters participated. She would find the time to run between the many Little League fields transporting not only her children, but at times, those of friends that played on the same teams of her children. She truly was always on the go and had many activities to attend. Upon the first birth of her grandchild, she changed gears. She had a new calling. As each grandchild was born, Ruby Nell started caring for them as though she had started a second family while continuing her devotedness to her children. She adored each of her grandchildren and as they grew, she became involved with their activities as well—most notably continuing to be the youth leader at the SPJST after serving the same for her own children. She believed that children needed a place to have fun and she would make sure that as long as it was her watch, she would provide such a place. She
went with her grandchildren as they participated in the many functions that the SPJST offered, including Youth Achievement Day and camping. In addition, Ruby Nell would cheer from the stands as a supporter of her grandchildren in Little League. Missing a game was rare, for she received great pleasure watching her `second kids' run from base to base and catch balls. It was a rare sight to see her alone for if it was not one of her children with her, it surely was with a grandchild. She loved to have the entire family together for the holidays. She is preceded in death by her parents; Jo Turner, sister in-law; Marvin Markert, brother in-law; Alan Ging, nephew; and Kelly Turner, niece. She is survived by her husband, Joe Ray Bowen; son, Floyd and wife, Sue; daughter, Joyce Nelson and hus band, Raymond; daughter, Teresa Anderson and husband, Charles; daughter, Deborah Peters and husband, JR; son, Tim and wife, Amanda; son, Tom and partner, Keith. Ruby's grandchildren can be stated as being her pride and joy and most often the brightest moments in her life. She loved them tremendously and they all survive her. Their names are, in chronological order: Mary Flores, Ricky Flores, Mechelle Flores, Michael Bowen, Crystal Bowen, Charlie Anderson, Euell John Anderson "EJ," Mikhaila Nelson, Brandon Bowen, Kenneth Jacob Benson Anderson "JB," Logan Bowen, Jarrad Lee Anderson "TJ," Tanna Bowen, and Jonathan Peters. She is also survived by four siblings—brother, James Turner and wife, Irene; sister. Mary Markert; brother, William Turner and sister, Lena Ging and husband. David. In addition, Ruby Nell Bowen is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many friends who will dearly miss her. Ruby Nell was buried Saturday, January 25 at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, surrounded by family and friends. She will be missed very much and will always remain lovingly in our hearts. Wednesday, February 12, 2003—VESTNIK/13 Mr. Marek was born April 8, 1921 in the Abbott area, the son of August and Mary Frances Marek. He married Louise Vanek in Marlin. She preceded him in death on November 30, 1969. Mr. Marek was a farmer until he went to serve his country during World War II. He served with the 3rd Army division under General PattOn in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia with the rank of sergeant. He returned home to farm, then to work at the VA Medical Center as a nursing assistant, retiring in 1981. He was a member of VFW Post 4819 and SPJST Lodge 54, West. He is also preceded in death by parents; and brother and best friend, George Marek. He is survived by a son, Ronnie. He was born August 8, 1917 in Flatonia, Texas to Adolf B. and Bessie Pospisil Darilek. December 19, 1941, he married Viola Valigura. He served in the U.S. Army for four years in Battery A, 1.2d Field Artillery BN of the 36th Texas Division. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Army and received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the Europe/Africa/Middle East Campaign Medal with five bronze battle stars. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and DAV. Anton farmed and ranched many years in Moravia. He then moved to Hallettsville. He worked at the Texaco service station. Betty, during her profressional career as a certified public accountant, has served as assistant controller of American Income Life Insurance Company assistant controller of American Amicable Life Insurance Company, vice president and manager of Trust Operations for Texas national bank of Waco and most recently, as comptroller of LaVega independent School District. Everyone who Betty met understood that family and church were the most important things in her life. She was blessed with two fine children who were each actively involved in many academic and athletic activities. Betty's priority was to attend each function they participated in. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in the community of Elk. She was past president of the St. Ann's Altar Society. The funeral was held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 23 at Greenwood Chapel. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 22 at Greenwood Funeral Home. Sister Clara had planned her arrangements many years ago and asked that family members be a part of the service. This included that her nephew, Joe Paul Hubenak, who served as the officiant; singers were Charles Duke, who sang her favorite song, "Somewhere My Love" and "Mother" and her great-niece, Melissa Hubenak, who sang "Amazing Grace." Pallbearers were nephews Gordon Hubenak, Michael Lindsey, and Ray Relf with Dick Durham, Bob Phillips, and Bill Barreda, extended family members and nephews also served as pallbearers.
Clara Hubenak Cohen was born in Seaton, Texas. A 43-year member of SPJST Lodge 92, Clara will be remembered for her humorous ways, her pickled beets and her famous peanut brittle. Clara was also a member of the Arlington Heights Christian Church, SPJST Lodge 92 Ladies Circle, and a former member of the Lady Elks Lodge 124. She is preceded in death by her late husband, Abe Cohen, who died in 1970. Expression of Sympathy We the members of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, West, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed member EMILIA VOCHOSKA age 90 of West who passed away at 12:35 a.m., Saturday, January 18, 2003 in her home after a brief battle with cancer. A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Monday, January 20 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. January 21 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery near West. Mrs. Vochoska was born April 7, 1912 in West, the daughter of Vaclav and Frances (Stefka) Stavik. She married Raymond John Vochoska on July 7, 1930 in West. He preceded her in death on July 17, 1975. She was known for her kolaches and homemade noodles. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting. Mrs. Vochoska was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 829, St. Anne's Altar Society, SPJST Lodge 6, and a lifelong member of
St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. She is also preceded in death by three sisters, Hattie Grmela, Betty Tobola, and Mary Langer. Survivors include four daughters, Marcella White, Margie Peine and husband, Ed, Dorothy Machac and husband, Fred, and Eugenia Riddle and husband, Roy; son, Raymond Vochoska, Jr. and wife, Sharon; sister, Willie Mae Aimer of Huntsville, Alabama; 20 grandchildren; 36 greatgrandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Resolution of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 84, Dallas and the entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of ANTONIE ANNIE LAZA. "Tonie" age 84, devoted caring mother, loving grandmother, and great-grandmother went on January 2, 2003 to be with the Lord and join her husband, John Joseph Laza to whom she was married 53 years. Her love for cooking and sharing with her large family was fulfilled again this past Christmas with over 50 members of her family on Christmas Eve. Her strength, character, and wit will be missed. She was a member of Mesquite Cumberland Presbyterian Church, SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas and the VFW. She is survived by five daughters, Charlene Kostak and husband, Joe; Sandra Mathis and husband, Joe; Linda Lemaster and husband, Terry; Toni Meals and husband, Ronnie and Peggy Vaut and husband, Butch; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Annie Mae Hubbard, Tillie Kroas, and Bessie Wilson. In Memory of Willie Vornsand God saw you getting weak and tired. He put his arms around you and whispered. "Come to Me". Sunday, December 1, 2002, our loved one, Willie (Bill) Vornsand passed away at the Willie Vornsand Gonzales Worm Springs Hospital. Prior to his stay at the hospital, he was a resident at the Regency assisted Living Center and then at Regency Nursing Home in Schulenburg Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Monday, December 2 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 3 at 10 a.m., with Reverend Tim Kosler as celebrant. Burial services were held at the Moravia Ascension Catholic Church with Military grave-
side rites by. the American Legion Post 0143 and VFW Post 05623 of Schulenburg. Bill was born May 26, 1921 in Moravia, Texas to Willie' G. Vornsand and Emilia Starouska Vornsand. He attended Moravia School. In October of 1942, he was drafted •into the U.S. Army Air Force and served in the 20th Air Force in the Pacific on Guam. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. While stationed in Fresno, California, he married the love of his life and dancing partner, Evelyn Kocich of Moravia. After his return from the service, they settled in Houston, where he worked at the American Can Company and retired with 30 years of service. While living in Houston, Bill and his wife, Evelyn spent most of their leisure time involved at the SPJST Lodge 88, Houston - either working on, various committees or singing and dancing. He was a member of Lodge 88 Choral, Group Bingo Committee ,the Czech Dramatic Club, and the Entertainment Committee there. He enjoyed making friends and being friendly to everyone. He loved to entertain people, young and seniors with his stories which he made up. His favorite being telling people when he met his wife-to-be, Evelyn, and how he had to learn to speak Czech before he could take her out on a date. Music and dancing were the joys of his life along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bill was a member of the Schulenburg VFW and the American Legion, Moravian Czech Singers, the Czech Heritage Society, Red and White Polka Dancers and the Swiss Alp Dance Club. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of 58 years, daughter, Marie Logiodice and husband, Rock; son, James Vornsand and friend, Hope Henneke; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, Willie and Emelia Vornsand, sister, Sylvia Filip. Pallbearers were grandchildren, Ray Klechka, Kenneth Klechka, Dominic Logiodice, Justin Vornsand, Jayme Gordon, and Kirk Gordon. Our beloved husband and daddy has served his time here on earth, making all of us happy, and now he is entertaining the angels with his stories so be at peace. SPJST Library, Archives and Museum a "must see" for visitors to Temple The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) in Temple, Texas is a "must-see" for visitors to the city and state. Through its varied collections, the SPJST LAM seeks to preserve the culture, the memories and the proud history of Texans of Czech ancestry. It stands as a tribute to the pioneer spirit, resourcefulness and valor of our Texas forefathers and mothers. The library contains more than 23,000 books and manuscripts. There is also an extensive collection of genealogical texts and research materials. Credit goes to past SPJST Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris for his work in the early 1960s in starting the SPJST Library collection and to Otto Hanus for his diligence as the SPJST Museum's first curator. The lion's share of thanks for building the collection goes to SPJST members and friends who have donated many thousands of artifacts and books. The SPJST LAM has been at its present location in the SPJST Home Office since 1971. Evaluating the growth and planning for the future of the SPJST LAM was the subject of considerable focus in the 1990s. Delegates to the 1992 SPJST Convention in Victoria established a committee to make suggestions regarding the long-term goals and
objectives of the SPJST LAM. The SPJST LAM received a Certificate of Incorporation by the State of Texas Secretary of State's office on April 13, 2000. Delegates to the 2000 SPJST Convention in June voted to ratify the actions of the Supreme Lodge to establish the SPJST LAM as a separate entity. Over the years, the SPJST LAM has been a labor of love for many people. It's still that way. Now LAM directors are working to see that the SPJST LAM is fully utilized as an educational tool and are planning to expand the scope of the project. The SPJST LAM is actively seeking new acquisitions and exploring options for growth. The hope is that these efforts result in a dynamic museum and library program that stays true to the spirit in which the SPJST LAM was conceived nearly a half century ago. Before Easter Sunday, children finish school on Ugly Wednesday, which is a good idea because they need to spend some serious time on making Easter what it should be. In the evening of Green Thursday, all the boys from the village equip themselves with a wooden rattle ("rehtacka"). They form a group and walk through the village, rattling their rattles vigorously so the noise can be heard from afar. The meaning of the rattling may be to chase away Judas. The same procedure repeats on Good Friday. The last rattling day is White Saturday, when the boys not only walk through the village, but stop at every house in the morning and rattle until they are given money which they then split between themselves. The symbol of Easter is the egg, as it is a symbol of spring and new life, along with other Easter mascots like baby hare, lamb, or chicken. It is a tradition to bake a lamb at Easter, which is a rather cruel custom. Real lamb is often replaced by baked gingerbread lamb. (Source: www.locallingo.corn)

Dear Members, Lodge 20 Granger's meeting was called to order on January 3, 2003 at by President Cara Spanel-Weber. Elizabeth Tischler led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read, there were seven members present and five adults. Lodge 20 received three new members. They are Rachel, Ben, and Holly Strmiska from Davilla, Texas. Their parents are Clement and Sandy Strmiska. We are very happy and excited about their joining, and we hope they will enjoy the new year ahead. The minutes were read and approved. Mary Tischler gave the treasurer's report, and we're comfortably happy with the amount.
We had a meeting on Sunday February 2. We got to make Valentine cards for the people in the nursing home. My brother was a new member at this meeting, and he got a tee-shirt. Its common usage is relatively new, but it has almost replaced "dobre odpoledne" meaning "good afternoon" and has been making inroads in replacing even "dobre rano" or "dobre jitrof". "Dobr9 den" has replaced also quite a few overly polite greetings such as "pokiona, ma, ticta, rukullbarn, etc:" Good riddance. "Dobre rano" is used more in the country, while "dobre jitro" is more common in the cities. "Dobre jitro" is becoming more and more common. Since "jitro" is a poetic word and not otherwise commonly used, you may run across an abbreviation "dobrktro", which is strictly colloquial. "Sbohem" has a religious origin. Literal translation is "with God" and traces apparently to the phrase "Jdi (or idete) s Bohem". "Jdi" is singular, while "Mete" is plural imperative (meaning "Go with God"). The religious meaning has been slowly lost in the common usage, therefore, it is written now as one word, "sbohem", instead of "s Bohem". The religious meaning has been largely preserved with th • longer form of the same greeting "s Pattern Bohem", and, therefore, it is usually written as three sepailtte words with capital letters. Literal translation would be "with Lord 'God." Occasionally, you may see it written as one word, "spinem bohem". "Dobrk veer" and "dobrou noc" is used similarly as in this country. The same is true of "na shledanou". "Nazdar" was made popular by the Sokols, and in this country it was regarded as a special Sokol greeting. This is no longer so. "Nazdar" is very common, and no longer connected with Sokol use exclusively. When you meet someone who is older or whom you do not know closely, then the greeting of "dobr9 den" would come to your lips, while a close friend or contemporary you would greet with "nazdar". From the point of an English-speaking person, the usage of "nazdar" is peculiar in the sense that it could and actually is commonly used, not only when meeting a person like the American "hello", but also in parting, instead of "na shledanou" or "sbohem".
