TCelebrating Success and Looking Forward
he 34th SPJST Convention is now part of our history, and what a success it was! We extend our thanks to all delegates for their service and dedication. For the first time ever, the Convention was completed in just one day, an impressive feat – thanks to the efficiency and commitment of everyone involved. A special thanks to our 2023-2024 State Royalty who presented amazing talent performances at the evening dinner. During the day, they assisted with a volunteer service project that resulted in donating more than 700 snack bags to Veterans. My appreciation to all members and friends who contributed funds and snacks for this project.
In the next issue of the Vestnik, we will provide a summary of the Convention. This will include updates to the by-laws, results of the elections, and photos from the activities.

It’s Your Life
Understanding Universal Life - Part Two
Second of a Two-Part
Series
In the last article, we talked about how Universal Life insurance worked. Today, we will talk about what to look for, mistakes people make, how to make adjustments, and several solutions that almost every company offers.
Most of the problems occur from the lack of understanding how the UL works – not looking at statements and not making adjustments when changes are made to the policy (partial withdrawal, loan, missing payments, change in premium, interest, etc.). No matter what type of UL you have, or who it is with, anytime a change is made, always ask the agent or the company for a reprojection. Basically, that is a new projection on how long the policy will last after the changes are made. This can actually be done before you make the changes. It will help determine if you need to make any adjustments to the policy. If caught soon enough, there are several adjustments that can be made to keep the policy strong. Let’s take a closer look at what adjustments can be made:
1. Lower your amount of insurance, but keep the premium the same. This will lower your cost of insurance allowing money to go back into the cash. If you don’t need as much anymore, this is an easy solution.
2. Increase your premium. This is an option when done early and can save you from making a major increase later. A little can go a long way at the right time.
3. If you smoked or used nicotine products and no longer use them (for at least one year), changing your classification to non-nicotine could lower the cost of insurance, putting more of your premium into the cash, keeping your policy alive longer.
4. Lower your insurance and increase your premium. This lowers the cost and allows more money to go into the cash to have later when you need it.
5. Convert your policy to a whole life plan. This may cost more monthly, but guarantees coverage as long as you pay. You won’t have to worry about the economy or cash value running out and lapsing the policy.
6. Convert your policy into a single paid life plan. This can take your cash and buy a paid-up policy. At that point, you have insurance for the rest of your life without paying anymore.
7. Take your cash and buy an annuity. Then take your premium, and pay it to the annuity. The longer you live, the more you will have. If you don’t pay anything into it, the annuity will still grow.
8. Make a large one-time payment into the cash. As long as you don’t violate the government maximum payment allowed, your policy could start growing again.
9. Lower your insurance and lower your payment a little. This would lower the cost of insurance and put less pressure on your monthly payment, allowing you to pay less, but keep the policy going.
10. Pay the cost of insurance plus the administration fee from your annual statement. This will make sure no money comes out of your cash value keeping it alive. Every year, your premium will go up by the cost of insurance, but it won’t make you pay a large increase all at once.
11. Change from option “B” increasing, to Option “A” level. It will slow your cost of insurance increase and maybe allow the policy to stay in force.
12. Lower your insurance and take some of the cash and put it into an annuity. You will still have insurance, and the longer you live, the more the annuity will grow. This will help supplement the lower death benefit.
13. Cash it out while there is still cash in it. It’s better to cash it out than to lose everything.
Not all of these solutions may be available with other companies, but they are available with SPJST’s ULs. If you do an annual review, it would be much easier to make adjustments before it’s too late. The longer you wait, the harder it is to fix. Remember, when you receive your statement, contact your agent, territory manager, or me and we will be glad to review and help you decide if an adjustment is needed.
If you make any changes, ask for a projection to see if you need to make an adjustment. For those old enough, you may remember the Fram Oil commercial that used to say, “You can pay me now or PAY ME LATER.” A little today can go a long way toward tomorrow. In the end, you bought it to help your family; we want to help your family, too.
“We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever; the goal is to create something that will.” —Chuck Palahniuk

Czech Republic travellers visit Fayetteville
The four-member delegation representing the Pardubice regional government of the Czech Republic arrived in Texas on May 24, 2024. Their visit coincided with the visit to Texas by Pardubická Muzika, a traditional Czech brass band from the renowned Pardubice Conservatory of Music in the Czech Republic. Pardubická Muzika was one of the headline performers at this year’s National Polka Festival held Memorial Day weekend in Ennis. In addition, the band played for audiences in Seaton, LaGrange, and Houston.
The four-member governmental delegation included Martin Netolicky, governor of the Pardubice Region; Magda Krivanova, director of the Museum of Nature in Vysocina (www.nmvp.cz/vysocina), member of the Pardubice Regional Parliament, and former mayor of Hlinsko; Pavel Stefka, member of the Pardubice Regional Parliament and vice mayor of Policka; and Dominik Bartak, head of the Governor’s office and spokesman of the Pardubice Region.
In addition to attending performances by Pardubická Muzika, the delegation was here to meet with public officials, business accelerator and matchmaker firms, and museums seeking to establish contacts which could lead to partnerships between the Czech Republic and the United States.
“The group had a keen interest in Fayetteville for the significant role that the city played in the settlement of Czech immigrants in Texas,” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek. “Known as the ‘Cradle of Czech Immigration in Texas,’ our Czech visitors knew that the city of Fayetteville holds a special place in Texas-Czech history due to its importance in preserving their culture, language, and traditions. In addition to being the first homeplace of SPJST, the city provided immigrants from the Czech lands of Moravia and Bohemia with a sense of belonging and community.
“Fayetteville welcomed the newcomers with open arms, offering support
and assistance to help them adjust to their new lives in America. This sense of camaraderie and solidarity help Czech immigrants overcome the challenges of starting afresh in a foreign land,” he adds.
Regarding the four-member delegation visit to Fayetteville, SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville Secretary Debby Pflughaupt, Lodge 1 Vice President Rose Rohde, and Lodge 1 President Sharon Fritsch gave this wonderful group a whirlwind tour of the beloved Fayetteville Area Heritage Museum and historic SPJST Lodge 1 hall. It was an enjoyable time learning and sharing our ways of life - even discussing and eating a Texas kolache after a homecooked meal from Orsak’s Cafe. A good time was had by all! We looking forward to meeting with them on their next visit to Texas. Pictures below depict our lovely fellowship with our new Czech friends! —Sharon Fritsch, President —SPJST—

Hello, Readers.
Lodge 39, Bryan met the Texas Build-a-Ramp crew in Kroger’s parking lot on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 7:30 a.m. Our Join Hands Day project started with breakfast for all. Lodge 84, Dallas Teacher Reflections
by Vicki Sims • Lodge 84, Dallas President
Being a teacher requires a lot of strength. You not only have your students to teach, but you must also work with their parents, other coworkers, and administrators. You need to have empathy, resilience, critical thinking, curiosity, kindness, honesty, patience and self-discipline.
Today, I will spotlight a few of our members that I know personally who are teachers. I am sure there are others, but these are the ones that responded to my request.
Stacy Coker Oglesby has a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Texas A&M Commerce. She has been teaching in Forney ISD for 17 years. Her mother Linda Bartek Coker has been a substitute in Forney ISD for 16 years.
Deborah Becan Kerr received her degree from Texas A&M University and studied English language. She obtained her master’s degree at Sam Houston State University. She is a school counselor at Navasota ISD but also has her own practice in counseling service (DBK)PLLC.
Stephanie Becan Turner has a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of North Texas in English literature and education. She obtained her Master of Social Work from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University) in San Marcos. Stephanie has spent 27 years in elementary education but is currently a counselor at Joslin Elementary in Austin.
Deborah Kerr and Stephanie Turner are sisters!
Katherine Parma Nemec received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Dallas with a major in biology and a minor in history. She received a secondary teacher certificate from University of Dallas. She is certified in Earth science and physical science from University of Texas at Arlington. Kathy has worked in many different Dallas ISD schools during her 18 years, teaching full time American and Texas history. After retiring, she continued to substitute for six more years. Something special about Kathy is she felt honored to be selected to participate in The History Channel program “Save Our History.” Kathy and her students’ assignment was “Why the growth of Dallas was directly tied to the growth of the railroad in the city.” After they visited different sites around Dallas taking notes, they all worked together to combine the information they gathered and made a book of 64 pages entitled, Dallas Railroad Ties. The City of Dallas showcased their project (railroad/airplanes) at the State Fair of Texas in the Hall of State. Kathy along with other teachers from around the state that were involved in completing this project were invited to the Smithsonian to meet each other.
Charles George Nemec, III received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from the University of Texas at Arlington and secondary teacher certificate from East Texas State University in chemistry. Once employed by Dallas ISD, he earned a composite science certification. Charles taught chemistry full time in Dallas ISD for 18 years and substituted for six years. Kathy and Charles are married.

Get to know the Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is a formal document that served as the signatory colonies’ statement that they were now “free and independent States.” It is a vital document in American history.
On July 1, 1776, delegates from the original 13 colonies, making up the Second Continental Congress, met in Philadelphia to vote on Richard Henry Lee's motion for independence. After some deliberation, ultimately 12 of the 13 delegates voted in favor. In recognition of those 12 delegates, here are 12 facts regarding the Declaration of Independence.
1. The drafted document was officially adopted on July 4, 1776, two days after freedom from Britain was approved. However, most delegates signed the document on August 2, 1776, while others signed on a later date. John Dickinson and Robert R. Livingston never signed the Declaration of Independence.
2. John Dunlap was the official printer of Congress at the time. He worked all night and into the morning of July 5 to produce the large, single-sided sheet, known as a broadside. About 200 copies of Dunlap’s broadside were made.

CENTER PHOTO: Lodge members Lloyd and Bettie House will be celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary on August 23, 2024. It has been a while since Lloyd has been able to attend a lodge meeting. It was good to have him attend the Lodge 202 second quarterly meeting. RIGHT PHOTO: Lloyd House and his daughter, Sandra Hoggard, will be celebrating their birthdays in September.
3. The University of Virginia owns two copies of a rare early printing of the Declaration. It is on display in the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library. It is believed the copy once belonged to George Washington.
4. Benjamin Franklin, George Read, Roger Sherman, Robert Morris, George Clymer, and James Wilson signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
5. The Declaration of Independence and
Lodge 139, Danbury Members Meet
the Constitution were hidden at Fort Knox during World War II, two weeks after Pearl Harbor was attacked.
6. Despite what the movie “National Treasure” will have one believe, the message on the back of the document is visible and reads “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.”
7. Richard Stockton, a lawyer from New Jersey, was a signer of the Declaration who later recanted his support of the American revolution. He subsequently swore his allegiance to King George III after being captured by the British.
8. In 1989, an original Dunlap Broadside was found hidden behind a picture a Philadelphia man bought at a flea market for $4. It later sold for $8.1 million. Ultimately, 26 copies of the original prints have been found.
9. The United States celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, even though independence was accepted on July 2.
10. Early on, not everyone in America was supportive of the Declaration of Independence. Partisan politics led to discord. Federalist John Adams was feuding with Republicans and Thomas Jefferson. The anniversary date of the signing was not widely celebrated until the Federalists were no longer involved in politics.
11. The one-year anniversary of Independence Day and the celebration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence slipped the minds of Congress in 1777. When they remembered it was July 3rd, they planned a last-minute celebration on July 4th, and each year thereafter.
12. John Trumbull’s painting “Declaration of Independence,” which was made into a lithograph replica by Ralph Trembly, hangs in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. It is a fictional depiction of the five-man drafting committee presenting their draft to Congress, and not the signing. The painting shows 42 of the 56 signees, since Trumbull couldn’t get likenesses of all involved. The men featured in the painting were never all in the room at the same time during the Declaration’s debate and signing.
The Declaration of Independence is a key document in American history, and its words are celebrated each Independence Day. (MetroService) —SPJST—

Fantastic fireworks facts
Cities and towns across the country commemorate special days with various festivities, particularly when warm weather beckons people outdoors. Fireworks long have been a popular way to cap off parades, concerts, sporting events, and national days of celebration. Entire communities come together to watch spectacular shows in which blazing pops of color light up the night sky. Pyrotechnics displays have been as-

tounding audiences all over the world for centuries. As early as 200 B.C. fireworks were developed in China to first scare off mountain men and later evil spirits. However, soon the Chinese incorporated "fire drug," essentially saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal (a recipe for gunpowder), into their cultural celebrations. Early Chinese fireworks consisted of the gunpowder mixture stuffed in bamboo tubes.
Fireworks have evolved since then, but by and large they're still comprised of the same main parts: an oxidizer, fuel and chemical mixture to produce desired colors. Fireworks are a wonder to behold when they are part of professional displays, and their history can be interesting as well.
● While the Chinese invented fireworks, Italians helped fine-tune them. Italians are credited with designing aerial shells and figuring out that certain metallic powders could create specific colors.
● The largest consistent fireworks show in the United States is the Macy's show in New York over the Hudson River on July 4th. More than three million people view the show, which includes more than 40,000 shells.
● The Walt Disney Company is the largest consumer of fireworks in the world. It also is the second largest purchaser of explosive devices, behind only the U.S. Department of Defense.
● High-energy metal compounds like copper chloride emit colors like violet and blue in fireworks. Low-energy compounds like strontium chloride produce orange and red.
● The pattern fireworks will produce in the sky is determined by how stars are arranged inside of the shell. Stars are the cubes or spheres that contain the chemicals needed for the firework reaction.
● "Daytime fireworks" are made up of colored smoke and can be seen during the day.
● Individuals who are employed in the manufacture of fireworks must wear cotton clothing including undergarments, as synthetic clothing can create sparks capable of detonating fireworks.
● Various fireworks shapes have their own names. They may be called willows, palms, crossettes, horsetails, rings,
cakes, and more.
● New Castle, Pennsylvania is known as the "Fireworks Capital of America" because Zambelli Fireworks Internationale and Pyrotecnico both got their start there in the mid-nineteenth century. Fireworks will soon be booming in towns and cities all over, and their history is as interesting as their displays are awe-inspiring. (MetroService) —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready for summer camp
Dear Vestnik Readers
I am finally out of school! I am so glad it is summer. I get to sleep in and stay up late now . . . well . . . as late as my mom will let me. It is also hotter, and I can go swimming. The only bad thing is it keeps raining over and over again. It seems like we never get a break!
I just got out of a math camp. It was a weeklong camp where I learned eighth grade math. At the end of the week, you take a test and if you make an 80 or higher, you pass eighth grade math and get to move into Algebra 1. I am happy to say I passed! Algebra, here I come. I also cannot wait for camp next week! I have not been to camp since 2022. I am excited to go back. I know I will have fun doing all the activities. Also, Lodge 47, Seaton just had our annual picnic. It was not bad. I helped run plates for most of the time. Have a great June!

Lodge 47, Seaton youth: glad school is finally out
Dear Vestnik Readers, It is June. I made Select Soccer this year, and we have already had a few practices. I think I will do pretty good. Yesterday, I ran one mile in 9:01 minutes.
Last week, I went to Camp Invention. I’m doing pretty good. I made a lot of inventions. My favorite one was a house that had working water. It’s really fun. The chaperones are nice, too. A lot of my friends were there. I am in the green group.
The Lodge 47 Seaton picnic was a success. I don’t like that it was inside though because it is called a “picnic” for a reason. I was running the to-go plates. The food was great. Personally, I liked the sausage the most. I helped make the coleslaw so you know it was extra delicious.
I’m glad school is finally out. I’ve been having fun since summer vacation started. Well, I guess that’s it for today. Andrew Ordogne, age 8 —SPJST—
