Unity in the Face of Adversity
For the second time in less than two months, our skies have turned dark and day transformed into night. The first instance was a spectacle of nature: the beautiful solar eclipse on April 8. Many of us gathered to witness this event, marveling at the wonders of the universe as the moon passed between the Earth and the sun.
However, the second time was a stark contrast. On May 22, tornadoes swept through Temple and surrounding areas, bringing devastation in their wake. The storms uprooted trees, damaged homes, and caused significant disruptions to our daily lives. Many of our staff have sustained losses, and our hearts go out to all affected. Please keep these individuals, as well as everyone impacted by the recent storms across the state, in your thoughts and prayers.
In the aftermath of these storms, our city and community have shown remarkable resilience. Neighbors have come together, helping one another clear debris and begin the restoration process. It is this spirit of unity and support that defines us and gives us hope even in the face of such adversity.
This Week’s Vestnik
Due to the extensive power, internet, and phone outages, this week’s Vestnik is arriving later than usual. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these challenges.
SPJST Convention
We are eagerly anticipating the SPJST Convention, which is now only days away. The event will take place on Friday, June 7, and Saturday, June 8, right here in Temple. This gathering is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together, discuss important matters, and chart the future course of our organization. Delegates are encouraged to download the app at https://my.yapp.us/SPJST for the latest Convention updates. We look forward to welcoming all delegates and members to Temple for what promises to be a productive and inspiring event.
Flag Day is June 14
Flag Day is just around the corner. This day, celebrated annually on June 14, reminds us of the importance of patriotism and the values that bind us as a nation. It is a time to reflect on our freedoms and the sacrifices made to preserve them.

Service Project at SPJST Convention: Supporting VA Patients
We are thrilled to announce a meaningful service project at the upcoming SPJST Convention to benefit VA patients across the Olin Teague VA Hospital System. This initiative aims to provide snack bags to patients in various clinics, accompanied by personalized thank you cards. Our goal is to assemble over 500 bags during the Convention, and we need your help to achieve it.
Program, in collaboration with the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), assembled and delivered 220 snack bags.
We ask delegates, members, and lodges to support this initiative by donating snacks or funds. All participants can proudly state their involvement in a statewide service project. Financial contributions can be sent via Paypal to info@spjst.org or Venmo to @spjst.
The Olin Teague VA Hospital System includes 11 clinics located in Temple, Temple Annex, Killeen, Palestine, Bryan/College Station, La Grange, Austin, Waco, Cedar Park, Brownwood, and Copperas Cove. These clinics serve a broad area from East Palestine to San Saba, Stephenville to Buda (south of Austin), and Hill County to south of La Grange, including College Station, Waco, Austin, Temple, and Killeen.
If you wish to donate snacks, Sam’s Club or Amazon are excellent sources for bulk items. Please limit chocolate as it may melt, and avoid tough foods like jerky, which can be difficult for elderly patients to chew. Your support is crucial for the success of this project. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of VA patients. For more information, feel free to contact us. Thank you for your generosity and commitment to this cause.
Many VA patients transported from rural areas by van have to wait all day for their return trip and often do not have the means to get food delivered or pay for a cab. The snack bags we provide may be their only nourishment for the day. This year, we aim to surpass last year’s effort, where the SPJST Youth
Rebecca “Becky” Vajdak, who has been serving as the VAVS representative for the NSDAR at Olin Teague since 2022, will oversee this effort. Prior to this role, she served as the VAVS representative for Blue Star Mothers of America from 2015 to 2022.
Let’s come together and show our support for this worthy cause. Thank you for your contributions and dedication.

Commentary
I would like to thank the board for a good meeting. I would also like to thank the officers for their hard ward and reports. Thanks to Brett for his report and charts.
On the fraternal side of SPJST, we had a challenging year with the changes in the program. The main focus was giving back to our communities and doing projects in the communities. We had some lodges earn more funds for their lodge and some earned less. Thank you, Melanie, for the information on our fraternal impact in Texas. This report shows that SPJST hosted 1,225 fraternal service activities in 2023, attended by 61,633 SPJST members and non-members. This shows SPJST and its members and non-members are fraternal. This will show the politicians that have tried to take away the fraternal benefit societies’ 501(c)8 tax-exemption status that we are still alive and doing more in our communities today.

I am pleased to provide you with an update on the current status of our life insurance company and share some exciting news about our recent and upcoming events.
First, I am thrilled to announce my enthusiasm for working with the new leadership at Lodge 139, Danbury. Their vision and commitment are already making a positive impact, and I am confident that together we will achieve great things.
Our recent District Five get-together was a fantastic success. The event was filled with fun activities such as bingo, cornhole, and door prizes, and it was wonderful to see so many of you there. Although the actual meeting lasted less than 30 minutes, the social aspect of the gathering was invaluable, allowing us to strengthen our community bonds. Thank you goes out to Lodge 142, Houston and President Dennis Hermis for hosting this event!
As we approach the upcoming convention in Temple, Texas, I cannot stress enough the importance of being well-prepared. Please take the time to review the proposed by-law changes thoroughly. Your informed participation is crucial for the continued success and governance of our organization.
Looking ahead to the second quarter, I am optimistic about our prospects. Our dedicated sales force is working diligently, and I am hopeful for a significant increase in both insurance and annuity sales. I was particularly delighted by the strong turnout of agents for the recent annuity training session. Your commitment to professional development is commendable and greatly appreciated.
I recently attended the AQS Symposium in Cleveland, Ohio, where I gained valuable insights and information. I have shared this knowledge with our directors and officers to help guide our strategic decisions and enhance our operations.
I am also pleased to report from this event l learned that SPJST’s sound investment strategies are yielding excellent results. We continue to lead in many performance categories compared to our peers in the fraternal insurance industry. This achievement is a testament to our prudent financial management and
commitment to our members’ best interests. Congratulations to all the members who received their 50- and 75-year pins this year. Your long-term membership and trust in SPJST are deeply appreciated, and we are grateful for your continued support. I am saddened by the passing of longtime Lodge 91, San Jacinto officer Frankie Brewer. She will be missed.
Last, I am looking forward to the upcoming SPJST summer camp and youth showcase. These events are wonderful opportunities for our youth to come together, learn, build lasting memories and most important, have fun.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to SPJST. Together, we are building a stronger future.

State Fraternal Director presents June updates
Hello to our membership! I hope you are doing well. Please keep our members in the Houston and Temple areas in your thoughts and prayers. Houston had storm damage on Thursday, May 16. Families are trying to recover from the damage. Lodge 88, Houston lost trees, and fencing was blown down. Many members were without electricity for days.
On Wednesday, May 22, Temple was hit with two tornados and straight line winds. The Home Office did not sustain
any damage from the storm other than power and other outages; however, some of our office staff sustained much damage to their homes. The west side of Temple looks like a war zone. Some of the east side looks bad, too. Businesses and homes were damaged, and cars were overturned on roads and parking lots.
There are significant amounts of cleanup and restoring taking place in the Houston and Temple communities. Please keep them in your prayers. And, as I’m sending this to the Vestnik, more tornadoes are coming through and hitting north Texas. Everyone, please stay safe.
marily an informative session to bring the Board of Directors up-to-date on various matters.

It’s Your Life
Understanding Universal Life - Part One
First of a Two-Part Series
When it comes to life insurance, Universal Life (herein referred to as UL) policies are some of the most controversial plans available. They can be the greatest plan, and they can be the worst plan. You can use it for college, vacation, paying debt early, or bills. Or it can be a very expensive term policy that gives you nothing in return. It’s a plan that needs specific strategies and must be managed. I do a four-hour class on “Understanding Universal Life,” but today, I’m going to try to explain it in just a few paragraphs. The next article will explain some problems people create with the ULs and the several solutions available.
I will be honest and up front – I am a big UL fan. I have ULs for my five grandchildren, my two children, their spouses, and my wife and I. That’s 11 ULs in all. At the same time, there are many people with ULs, whether with us or with other companies, that are dying out, and in trouble of being canceled.
The first thing to understand, ULs are an interest-sensitive product so it can be affected by the economy. Variable ULs (VUL) are affected by the stock market, Indexed ULs (IUL) can be affected by the S&P Index market, and classic ULs are tied to the insurance company’s growth, not the markets directly. I’m not going to go into the details on how they work in depth; it would be a book if I did. But I will go over the basics to help you understand what to look for.
When you buy a whole life product, there is a specific formula that calculates the cost of insurance with excess premium so the cash value equals the death benefit at age 100. That number is divided by the difference between your current age minus 100. For example, if you are 35 years old and buy a $100,000 policy, it takes the cost of insurance plus any additional cash with interest that would make the cash value equal $100,000 when you hit 100 years old. It takes that total number and divides
it by your years left (100 - 35 years old = 65), that is your annual premium. Because this is an exact number, if you miss a payment, your policy will lapse (there are other situations that may affect it, but we will keep it simple). Also, because it is an exact number your premium is pre-calculated so it will never change, no matter what age you are.
On a UL, the interest changes so it doesn’t know what the cash value will do. The cash value can actually grow beyond your death benefit. At age 95, it matures, and you get the cash value not the death benefit. Because of that, it takes your actual cost of insurance from year to year and subtracts it from your premium, along with the administrative fee, and puts the excess in the cash account. Because the cost of insurance goes up with your age, every year less goes into the cash account; however, it is still earning interest.
For example, one of my grandsons has a $100,000 policy. His premium we chose to pay is $70. When he was zero years old, his cost of insurance was $2.14 with a $4 administration fee. Every time I paid $70, it took the $6.14 out and put the $63.86 excess in the cash account. The next year he turned one, and his cost of insurance was now $2.18 with the $4 admin fee so 4 cents less went into the cash account. When he turns 50, his cost of insurance may be around $110, but we are only paying $70. That $40 shortage comes out of the cash account to pay the deficit. Now when, he is 80 years old and the cost of insurance is $300, every time we pay $70, another $230 must come out of the cash to pay the deficit. If the cash gets to the point that there is not enough money to pay the deficit then the policy will lapse, and he will have no more insurance.
The idea is enough premium was put in early that the cash account plus the interest would still continue to cover the insurance cost shortage when he was older. Unlike a whole life, if you miss a payment, it takes the cost of insurance out of your cash account to keep the policy alive. As long as there is cash in the account, it won’t get canceled.
Where the problem begins is when someone takes cash out (via loan or sur-
render), misses payments, has too low a premium from the start or just ignore the cash when the cost of insurance grows. ULs are the only product that sends statements every year. The key is to contact your agent or the company when you get the statement and have someone review it with you. If you review it every year adjustments can be made to keep it healthy before it’s too late.
The next article I’m going to show you what to look for, mistakes people make, how to make adjustments, and the several solutions that almost every company
offers.

Benefits of Social Engagement and Community Service
by Teresa Brashear Executive Director
Serving seniors for nearly 20 years, the benefits of social engagement and the value of youth interaction with residents of assisted living communities is greatly appreciated. Socialization is proving to be a foundation for healthy aging. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Social isolation is associated with a 50 percent increased risk of dementia.” Recently, SPJST at Lake Travis Assisted Living, formerly known as Grace House, participated in the Bee Caves Public Library (BCPL) non-profit organization opportunities for teen volunteers.
“I am pleased to report that our BCPL summer and fall teen volunteer roster is full,” says Melissa Slaughter, Public Service Manager BCPL.
SPJST Senior Living (www.spjstseniorliving.com) is a non-profit organization serving seniors since 1958 in
Taylor, Texas, which acquired Grace House on Bee Caves Road over a year ago. Since the pandemic, many organizations have had to actively recruite to revive volunteer programs.
Volunteer opportunities in senior living help social engagement and enhance activities programs. Working with older adults helps youth improve their communication skills, provides a greater understanding and positive attitude toward aging. Here at SPJST at Lake Travis Assisted Living, our personal approach of providing two small households each representing 16 residents thrives on a family interactive atmosphere. We coordinate youth to help with activities from games, music to individualize time with a resident from reading, dominos, or cards.
Recently, Regents School of Austin ministerium coordinator reached out to us, and our residents loved having a group of students join for a putting game. “It was great to return to this community,” comments Chris Corley,
SOR Science Chair at Regents. “Our students enjoyed their time there, and the hospitality of the whole staff was great.”
Having worked here for more than 17 years, I appreciated that Chris remembered several of our core staff here.
Activity programs at assisted living communities provide physical, cognitive, and mental benefits to residents helping to improve their quality of life. Interacting with community resources is invaluable. Recently, we added several fitness classes by www.AgingIsCool.com instructor Becky Shidlofsky who resides here in Lakewood. “What our family values is the personal approach to care that my mother, Melinda Davis McQueen of West Lake, experiences here. It is like a boutique assisted living where we can add catered services.”

100 Years Ago This Month: June 1924
The month of June has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in June 1924.
• The Chicago radio station WDAP is rechristened “WGN” on June 1 after it is purchased by the Chicago Tribune. The station’s new moniker refers to the newspaper’s slogan, “World’s Greatest Newspaper.” Both the WGN station and a television station of the same name continue to be operated out of Chicago today.
• The Indian Citizenship Act is signed into law on June 2 in the United States. The law recognizes all Native Americans who had been born in the United States or its territories as U.S. citizens.
• Influential novelist Franz Kafka dies in Austria on June 3. Kafka, only 40 at the time of his death, suffered from laryngeal tuberculosis and died from starvation after eating became too painful. Kafka, now considered a literary giant of the twentieth century, was a relative unknown at the time of his death.
• Geologist and mountaineer Noel Odell watches British mountain climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine ascend from their base camp at Mount Everest on June 8. Mallory and Irvine are never again seen alive, and no trace of either man is discovered until 1999, when Mallory’s body is discovered at an altitude of more than 26,000 feet.
• Ecuador extends the right to vote to women on June 9, becoming the first country in South America to do so.
• The Newton Gang carries out the largest train robbery in American history on June 12. The gang makes off with more than $3 million (the equivalent of roughly $54 million in 2024) after stopping mail train number 57 near Rondout, Illinois.
• American President Calvin Coolidge's 16-year-old son, Calvin, Jr., plays tennis on the White House tennis court on June 30. The president's son plays wearing tennis shoes but no socks and develops a blister on his toe that develops into sepsis. The younger Coolidge passes away on July 7. (MS)

Beyond professional plans, Nik looks forward to spending more time with his wife as they cherish watching their daughter grow up.
Nik states, “Two phrases kept me grounded and moving forward during my educational journey; and thus, I wanted to share them in hopes they would not have occurred on their own or if I acted as a bystander to the events in my education. I actively sought out what I wanted and worked hard to learn and pursue those aspirations. My advice to pass on from this is this: If you work hard, trust the process, and ask questions along the way, you can almost always end up in a better place than you started.”
“The second phrase is that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. I never could have made it this far without my many villages of support, encouragement, and advice. We can only do so much on our own, and I can honestly say my journey would not have been as enjoyable without the people who supported me along the way. My advice is to find your villages and remember to support them as much as they support you.”

Interesting Facts about D-Day
This June marks the 80th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy, widely-referred to as D-Day, during World War II. On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in France. The Normandy landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history and marked the culmination of planning that began
in 1943. D-Day is often characterized as a success that led to the liberation of Europe from the stranglehold of the Nazis, and rightfully so. But the Allied forces paid a heavy price for the victory, as more than 9,000 soldiers lost their lives within the first 24 hours of the landings.
The landings at Normandy have inspired countless books, documentaries and Hollywood productions, but there’s still much to be learned about this momentous occasion in world history. The following are some interesting facts

about D-Day.
• The meaning behind the name “DDay” remains open to debate and has sparked legions of curious individuals to ask what it signifies. In fact, the United States Department of Defense reports that, “What does D-Day stand for?” is the most frequently asked question at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Though a definitive answer

may never materialize, the DoD quotes U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower saying all amphibious operations had what was known as a “departed date,” which was often shortened to D-Day. General Eisenhower reportedly noted there were several D-Days during World War II, even if one in particular is more renowned than any other.
• Deception plans played a notable role in the planning and ultimate success of the Normany landings. According to the Imperial War Museums, the D-Day deception plan was codenamed Operation Fortitude, which itself was part of a larger deception strategy known was Operation Bodyguard. Fortitude North aimed to trick the Germans into believing the Allies were planning to launch an attack on Norway, while Fortitude South was designed to deceive the Germans into thinking the invasion of France would occur northeast of Normandy. These deception plans included the usage of dummy tanks and the fictitious First US Army Group (FUSAG), among other efforts.
• Popular western depictions of the Normandy landings often portray largely American and British forces, but the D-Day invasion was a collective success that included troops from many additional countries as well. In addition to troops from the U.S. and Britain, the D-Day invasion involved naval, air and group support from Australian, Belgian, Canadian, Czech, French, Greek, New

ensuring that D-Day was a success. Though his fellow meteorologists did not recommend any delays, Group Captain James Martin Stagg of the United Kingdom advised General Eisenhower to delay the D-Day invasion, which was originally scheduled for June 5, 1944. Various storms plagued the Atlantic and affected the British Isles in the days before the landings at Normandy, and indeed a storm centered north of Scotland on June 5 would have made the invasion of Normandy far more difficult. Though conditions were not perfect on June 6, they were markedly better, confirming Stagg's intuition that a delay was the best decision. That intuition left a lasting impression on General Eisenhower, who reportedly later credited his meteorologist when asked by President-Elect John F. Kennedy why the landings at Normandy had proven so successful. (MS) —SPJST—

Evelyn Popelka, 98, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 30, 2024. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Cross Church, located at 2202 Birdcreek Drive in Temple, Texas.
Evelyn was born near Cyclone to Alfred and Lydia (Schiller) Stepan on June 1, 1925. From the time that Evelyn was 11 years old, she was family-oriented. At that time, she had to drop out of school to raise her sister, Mabel, who was five years younger than she, to do the household chores and cook meals for her sister and father. For years, Mabel would send Evelyn cards for Mother’s Day.
Evelyn always knew that she wanted children of her own, and after her marriage to Martin in 1945, she was blessed with three sons (Martin Lynn, David, and Allen) and a daughter (Margaret). She raised her children with love and integrity and felt proud to see the responsible adults they became.
Evelyn’s religious faith was always her inspiration—the pages of her Bible are well-worn, and she strove to live an unselfish and godly life. When she was no longer able to attend her church, she listened to religious services on television.
Evelyn was a people-person and could strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere. She believed it was important to stay in touch with friends and enjoyed calling them to let them know that she was thinking of them or that she appreciated something they may have said or done in the past.
Evelyn was always happiest staying busy, which at one time meant gardening, mowing the lawn (which she did well into her 80s), canning vegetables or pickles, baking (delicious kolaches, cookies, and bread), sewing, and quilting. Her meals were feasts, and instead of “left-overs,” she served “plannedovers.” Some of her favorite years were when she worked at Lamar Middle school as the cookie maker.
When her body finally told her to slow down, she filled her days reading, quilting, and crocheting. She remained
an avid fan of the Texas Rangers, Texas A&M Aggies, and Dallas Cowboys and loved watching their games on television. She also loved listening to talk radio shows and to the Czech Melody Hour, which always set her toes to tapping and put her in a happy mood. She loved her friends and family and considered her life to be very blessed.
Preceded in death by her parents and husband Martin in 2008, Evelyn is survived by sons Martin (LaVerne) Popelka in Abilene, David (Rebe) Popelka in Colleyville, and Allen (Julie) Popelka in Temple; daughter Margaret (Patrick) Wong of California; grandchildren Andrea Popelka Levrets (Reid) of Abilene, David Popelka (Shannon) of Allen, Katherine Kelly (Thom) of Grand Prairie, Matthew Wong of Chicago, and Callie Wong of Milwaukee; greatgrandchildren Jackson Levrets, Rylee Levrets, Andrew Popelka, Luke Popelka, Ethan Popelka, Paul Kelly, and Philip Kelly; sister Mabel Wernecke of Oregon; and numerous nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Our Hospice House, 2608 North Main Street, Suite B, Box 195, Belton, Texas 76513 or online at www.ourhospicehouse.org.
