District II Holds Insurance Seminar SFM Gene McBride held dinner/seminars at the Home Office in Temple and Texas Inn Restaurant in Taylor along with District II Director Willie E. Kohutek for the active sales representatives in District II.

Of the forty - one producing sales representatives in District II, thirty were in attendance at these seminars.

We appreciate the efforts of these sales representatives and urge those who are not active to come join us aboard the

SPJST train. We are moving on to bigger and better things. "Don't be left behind."

It is the lodges' and members' duty to support the sales representatives of your lodge and to help them secure

new members in order to keep your lodge alive and growing.

Please urge the sales representatives of your lodge to attend the insurance seminars so they can better serve your membership.

Christmas At The SPJST Museum Curator, Thelma Bartosh, Posed In Christmas Display With SPJST Youth Christmas Tree

silence for our departed members, the most recent being Hermina Belicek .

After the minutes were read and approved, a financial report was given.

A report was also given on the painting of our lodge hall, which is in the process of being painted and a discussion followed.

Election of officers was held with President Albert Olsovsky, Vice President Millie Berger, Secretary Hattie Brossman and Financial Secretary Eddie Vrana being re elected.

Thank you was expressed by a round of applause to Eddie and Frances

Vrana for the use of their cabin for tM December meeting. They also provided the heat to warm the cabin, while at our hall we do not have any heat. In the summer time we can open all the windows and it's nice and cool.

After the meeting adjourned, two door prizes were given. The lucky people were President Albert Olsovsky and Alfonse Schwartz; then, the social started with refreshments, followed by a lunch of Christmas goodies. An afternoon was well spent.

Lodge No. 28, East Bernard

Open House Held At SPJST Museum On December 9th Ms. Thelma Bartosh, SPJST museum curator, held an open house for area teachers and principals at the SPJST Museum located in Temple. Ms. Bartosh conducted tours of the museum and encouraged teachers to bring their students throughout the school year.

Ms. Bartosh highlighted the tour with a Christmas display which included the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree. The

visitors were treated to hot cider, coffee and kolache.

The museum contains over 2,000 artifacts, 23,000 books and is a resource center for Czech genealogy.

The museum is open from Monday through Friday, 8 to 12 and 1 to 5.

Special tours can be arranged with Ms. Bartosh. There is no fee for the tour.

Our thanks to Ms. Bartosh for making our museum more visible in our community and for her support of our children.

Dear Members: Lodge 23, Moravia held their December meeting on Sunday, December 11, 1988 at 2 p.m. at the Vranas' cabin. There were nineteen members present.

The meeting was called to order by President Albert Olsovsky who led our members in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, followed by a moment of

Dear Members: The first monthly meeting of 1989 of Lodge Karel Jonas will be held on the second Sunday, the 8th and not the scheduled first Sunday. This follows local rules on meetings being that the first Sunday is also the first of January and New Year's Day. The agenda, following the regular "Order of Business," will have several pieces of "Old Business" to be resolved along with regular scheduled items.

A luncheon and fraternal gathering plus is planned for after the business meeting.

On the 4th of December, the annual meeting was held. There were two special guests present. They were District VI Director Brother Matt Vanek and Districts VI and VII Field Sales Manager Brother Jerome Hlavaty. Before the meeting convened, "Santa" came to wish everyone a "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." Helping to lead the Pledge of Allegiance was 4 - year - old Jessica Kelner. Our two guests gave good reports with Brother Hlavaty leading off by covering the insurance products available and Brother Vanek reporting on the request to extend the time on the Camp Ground report. He also spoke on a new project to raise money state - wide to donate to the restoration fund of the Battleship USS Texas, BB 35. All other reports were brief and were accepted as given. Several motions were made and passed to guide the lodge through the next year.

All officers' posts were NOT filled in the election and these will be filled in the January meeting. So far, the following elected positions have been filled: Board of Trustees are the same as those serving at the end of 1988, lodge treasurer is Brother Albert Lupik, lodge secretary is Sister Helen Kelner, President is this writer. Brother Matt Vanek donated five special door prizes to make things more festive. They were as follows: Special Key Fob -- won by Josephine Kelner Pitman; Tie Clip -- won by Joseph Kelner Coin Holder -- won by John Kelner Bracelet -- won by A.J. "Tony" Kelner Nail File -- won by Helen Kelner The names for the last two items had to be pulled again since the two persons whose names were pulled were not present anymore. This writer won the regular door prize given by the lodge.

The lodge furnished barbecued sausage from Vincek's Smokehouse plus bread and pickles. All of the other items that filled the table were donated

by Sisters Brdecka, Haverda, Hanzelka, Kortis, Sontag, H. Kelner, Perez and Nezval along with Brothers Lupik, "Tony" Kelner and Kubena.

Guests and hosts all enjoyed the fare.

Wednesday, December 28, 1988---VESTNiK/5 Kelner and daughter, Sister Pat (Kelner) Perez, for decorating the hall and tables. Along with this, an additional thanks to Pat's husband "Shayo" for letting us use some of their decorations. As always, the faithful bunch stayed behind to help with the cleanup so those of us who have to stay can get home before dark thirty. Two generations of SPJST secretaries -- Lorenda Baldwin, the new secretary of Lodge 139, receives the secretary's book from outgoing secretary and her father, Tommie Lostak, who has held the position for 36 years. Congratulations!

Danbury Lodge 139 Report District V Director Jerry Prochazka and his wife, Delores, were guests of Danbury Lodge 139 at the December 14 meeting and at the dinner following the meeting.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of departed member Gladys Lostak, and Director

Prochazka led the group in a prayer.

Members voted for the lodge to continue the tradition of giving Christmas turkeys to all lodge members who are seventy years of age or over. Treasurer Lonnie Lostak announced there are twenty - seven members eligible for the turkeys this year. However, in lieu of turkeys, checks will be sent to those members who live so far away that delivery of the turkeys is not feasible. Tommie Lostak will buy and deliver the turkeys as he has done in the past.

Our young member, Trey Steinman, left on December 16th where he will be in several cities in England and Scotland with the Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir. He will return home December 31st. May they all have a safe trip.

Scenes Of Gulf Coast Czech Festival Held At Lodge 172, Pasadena

Lodge 139 members at the Christmas dinner at E.J.'s Restaurant in Danbury.

It was voted to hold a barbecue for lodge members in March. Final arrangements will be decided on at the January meeting.

Director Prochazka brought communications from the Supreme Lodge. He announced our Financial Secretary Helen Filipp is one of the top sales representatives in the state again.

He expressed his thanks for having had the honor to serve as District V director for the past four years. Jerry was made an honorary member of Lodge 139.

Election of officers was held. Re elected to their respective offices were: President -- Vincent Hechler Vice President -- Henry Novak Financial Secretary -- Helen Filipp Treasurer -- Lonnie Lostak Lorenda Baldwin was elected the new secretary.

After having served thirty - six years as secretary of Lodge 139, Tommie Lostak chose to relinquish the office.

He has served the lodge faithfully and has been a diligent worker in, and a staunch supporter of, the SPJST throughout his years of service.

Tommie not only served as the lodge secretary, he served as District V treasurer for 31 years. He has represented Lodge 139 as a delegate to all SPJST State Conventions since 1960, except the 1988 Convention. He was elected a delegate to the 1988 Convention but was unable to attend because of illness in the family. Our lodge wishes to thank Tommie for his loyal service to the lodge and to the entire SPJST. After conclusion of business the thirty members and guests attending the meeting adjourned to E.J.'s Restaurant for the pre - Christmas dinner. A good time was had by all.

On Sunday, December 11, 1988 our annual meeting was called to order by President Dennis Hermis.

The fifty - five members and guests who were present stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers; all were present. Minutes from our previous meeting were read by the secretary, which stood approved as read. All other officers' reports were given.

Our Sick Committee reported that Agnes Becker and Mr. E.J. Valka had been in the hospital; hope both are feeling much better at this time.

The bar manager reported that the bar will be closed December 24th, 25th and 26th.

The $100 attendance prize went unclaimed due to the absence of Benjamin Lohoski. Our next month prize will again be drawn for $100; youngest member prize for $5 went to Keith Skobla, 6 - year - old.

Four past presidents present at the meeting were recognized, namely, Eric Stein, Henry Linhart, Sidon Tumis and Mary Ann Kieschnick.

Four door prizes went to Libby Kovar, Sidon Tumis, Henry Linhart and Lora Mabry.

The meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m. and our next meeting will be Sunday, January 8, 1989 at 2 p.m.

Dear Members: The four - lodge Christmas Party for 1988 was a huge success again this year with a delicious meal served to a large crowd of members from each of the lodges. Lodge 183 had about 23 present, if I didn't miscount, this year.

After the meal there was installation of officers for the four lodges by Sid Pokladnik, representing the Supreme Lodge for the year 1989. Let's give your lodge officers our support and help them keep your lodges strong and happy lodges for the next year.

Later there was plenty of music for dancing and socializing. This is the one time of the year that I get to meet and talk to all of my friends from all of the other lodges. Next year it will be Lodge 183's time to host the Chrismtas Party.

I hope to see you there.

A large crowd of Lodge 183 members and friends attended the Lodge Christmas Party on Friday, December 9th. Everyone enjoyed the pot luck dinner and there was plenty of food for all to eat. Music was by Silverado country/western/rock for your dancing pleasure. If you missed this one you really missed a great party. Gracie and I had our 19 - month - old - great - grandson with us and he really had a great time.

Remember the New Year's Eve Party and Dance on Saturday, December 31st with music by the Czech Mates (polka/country/western); admission $10 per person; time -- 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.; also BYOB; set - ups will be available, door prizes will be given and it's a casual dress dance.

Class At Alief

Alief Evening School, under the auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District), is again offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this 12 - week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on January 18, 1989 and henceforth once a week on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Tuition, set by the school, will be $43 and the instructor will be John J. Karas of Houston.

Dear Members and Friends: Our Christmas Party started with all thirty - six members and guest, Jewel Clark, reciting the pledge to our flag and a prayer for all the sick by Joe Prochaska.

Merel Kovar read the minutes of our October meeting since we didn't have one Thanksgiving, with a minor correction, they were approved as read.

Our treasurer gave us a good report and that a donation was sent to St. Theresa Home and other gifts given by the club.

A card was read from Eva and Virgil Dockery. They are in Phoenix, Arizona and will return in March.

Sunshine chairperson reported no cards had to be sent.

Jo Prochaska thanked everyone for the food bank donation and we will continue to have it.

We had election of officers, and all the officers accepted their same offices for 1989. Again, they will continue with no salaries. A big thank you to you all. You did a wonderful job in 1988. God bless you!

Letters From The Youth Lodge 30 YC Participates In Many Events Dear Vestnik Readers, Taiton Lodge No. 30 members were asked to perform their group acts on Friday, November 11th, at the American Legion on Veteran's Day celebration in El Campo. December activities were then discussed. The Christmas Party was December 11th at 2 p.m. Names were drawn for exchange of gifts. Our monthly meeting was also this day.

President Marcy then gave a report on the Fraternal Congress held in De Soto on October 22nd. Marcy Dorotik, SPJST State Queen, emceed over activities along with State King Daryl Kortis. Also Lenice Kaspar, Sarah Dluhos, Jeanine Dorotik and Valerie Roye were asked to perform their State winning dance to La Bamba.

November contest winners are as follows, 5 to 7: 1st - Rachel Dluhos, 2nd - Jason Kaspar and 3rd - Crystal Roye; 8 to 11 were: 1st - Valerie Roye, 2nd - Craig Dorotik, 3rd - Lenice Kaspar; 12 to 17 included: 1st Stephanie Roye, 2nd - Marcy Dorotik.

Poems were read and a skit about "Thanksgiving" was presented by several members. The members also worked on craft and refreshments were served.

On November 22nd Youth Club members took Thanksgiving turkey centerpieces to the Garden Villa Rest Home.

Dear Members, The Taiton SPJST Youth Club held their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. in the Taiton Community Center on Sunday, December 11, 1988. The meeting was called to order by President Marcy Dorotik. The pledge was led by Chase Zaleman, and the prayer was read by Valerie Roye.

Eighteen members were present.

Under old business, Marcy talked about the parade in Temple in which she rode in as State Queen. She also talked about the Christmas Parade held in El Campo in which she also rode in as Queen.

Under new business, the club discussed two workshops to be held December 20th and December 21st.

The 1989 Camp T - Shirt Contest rules were handed out. The January club projects were also discussed.

District VI Director Matt Vanek said a few words to the youth club.

Dear Readers, During the month of November, the New Tabor SPJST Youth Club was very busy. On November 19th we went to the Texas A&M vs. TCU Football Game. After we got to A&M we had a hot dog picnic. We all had fun even though it rained.

On November 26th we picked up trash for Adopt - A - Highway. After picking up trash, we had lunch at the hall and talked about our plans for our Christmas Party and program.

The last monthly meeting of the Dime Box Youth Club was held December 18 at 1 p.m. Scott Whitsel called the meeting to order and Richard Spacek led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The roll was then called. There were 19 members present. Due to the absence of our secretary and treasurer, no reports were read.

Our Youth Leader Doris Ford then told us that we made $99 at our bake sale on December 1st. We decided to have another bake sale on February 3rd at 4 p.m. at the bank. Everyone is asked to bring two baked items.

The Adopt - A - Highway program was then discussed. It was decided that whenever a nice day comes, the leaders will call and tell us to pick up trash since we need to pick it up.

We also decided to have a Parent Appreciation Dinner on February 19 at 12 noon. We will have our meeting then, too.

Door prize winners were Scott Whitsel, Nicholas Rackel and Lamar Hervey. The meeting was then adjourned.

After the meeting, we exchanged gifts and Santa came. Everyone had a lot of fun.

The meeting was then adjourned and the youth performed for everyone at the Adult/Youth Christmas Party.

The entertainment included the Andrew Sisters, a.k.a. Jennifer Dluhos, Stephanie Roye and Marcy Dorotik; also, Valerie Roye and Lenice Kaspar danced a high - kick routine and Jeanine Dorotik then joined them in a tap number to Rudolph. For the finale, all youth members sang Christmas Carols.

Dear Vestnik Readers, December 11, 1988 the Taiton SPJST Youth Club, along with the adult lodge, held their Christmas Party.

The adult meeting was held first at 2 p.m. with the youth club meeting at 3 p.m.

Youth President Marcy Dorotik called th :meeting to order. Chase Zaleman said the pledge and Valerie Roye recited the prayer. Special guests were District VI Director Matt Vanek and his wife, Henrietta.

Papers were handed out concerning the Camp T - Shirt Design Contest.

Then December projects were handed in.

Business discussed was our float we had in the El Campo Christmas Parade, December 1st. Featured on the float was our Taiton Lodge 30 State SPJST Queen Marcy Dorotik, along with her Duchess,Sarah Dluhos.

Many of the members also participating were Michael and Jason Kaspar, Craig, Curtis and Chad Dorotik, Bradley Krpec, Scott Krpec,

Many hours were spent putting this float together to make it the success it was. Thank you to Mrs. Georgia Dorotik, youth leader, for all the planning; also our builder, Leroy Kaspar and our driver, Jerome Dorotik, Jr. Thank you for sharing your time with the youth members and also thank you to Wanda Dorotik for supervising the youth members on the float during the parade.

Projects were then announced for January. Also a workshop is planned for December 20th at Mrs. Dorotik's.

December 21st we planned to go to the museum and then deliver the favors to the Rest Home, perform and sing for them.

Winners in the December contest, in 5- 7 were: 1st - Scott Krpec, 2nd Curtis Dorotik, 3rd - Rachel Dluho.

In 8 - 11: 1st - Lenice Kaspar, 2nd Jeanine Dorotik, 3rd - Valerie Roye.

In 12 - 17: 1st - Stephanie Roye, 2nd - Marcy Dorotik.

The Refreshment Committee for our January 8th meeting will be Anita Roye and Mrs. John Krpec.

Door prizes were drawn and a Christmas gift game was played.

Following the youth meeting, a program was put on by the youth club members.

Marcy Dorotik, Jennifer Dluhos and Stephanie Roye performed their pantomime of the Andrew Sisters with three numbers, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", "Eight to the Bar", and "Winter Wonderland".

Lenice Kaspar, Valerie Roye and Jeanine Dorotik performed a tap dance to "Rudolph the Red - Rosed Reindeer." Then all the youth club members joined together to sing a number of Christmas songs.

A meal of turkey, ham, dressing and all the trimmings was enjoyed by all and exchange of gifts were handed out to all members.

December 19th some members were asked to perform for the Catholic Daughters Christmas Party in El Campo. Participating were Lenice Kaspar, Jeanine Dorotik and Valerie Roye with their Christmas tap and jazz dances; and Marcy Dorotik, Jennifer Dluhos and Stephanie Roye with their pantomime of the Andrew Sisters.

Brother Delma was a veteran of World War II, a United States Postal Service employee, a member of West Masonic Lodge, Hillsboro Knights Templar 39, Waco Karem Shrine Temple, VFW Post 4819, Scottish Rite of Waco. Brother Delma was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Blooming Grove and an SPJST member since October 1975.

Mrs. Bubenik was born on August 6, 1920 in Miles. She was married to Albert Bubenik on December 2, 1939 in San Angelo. She was a member and past president of St. Helen's Altar Society and a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Bubenik of San Angelo; one son and daughter - in - law, Ronnie and Gloria Bubenik of Mineral Wells; three granddaughters, Sherrie, Marjorie and Connie Bubenik of Mineral Wells and two sisters, Homer Lee Griffin of Lubbock and Helen Geddes of Pocatello, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Rumsey and one sister, Edna Earl Hooker.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge sister PHILLIPPA L. RUSSEK, age 78 years, of East Bernard, who died Friday, December 2, 1988, in a Houston hospital following an extended illness. She was born January 20, 1910 in Church Point, Louisiana to the late Reinhardt B. and Dora Dalrymple Boettcher.

Mrs. Russek was a lifelong resident of East Bernard, where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was the church organist for 60 years. A graduate of Texas Women's University in Denton, Mrs. Russek taught school in East Bernard and Hungerford.

Mrs. Russek became a partner in the Boettcher Insurance Agency with her father and son in 1950. She was elected a director of Union State Bank in 1951, and was serving as vice chairman of the board at the time of her death.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Women, a charter member of the J.O.Y. Sunday School class, a founding member of the Concert Community Wharton Association, the Independent Insurance Agents of America, the Independent Insurance Agents of North America, the AARP and a 30 year member of the Aggie Club.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church. in East Bernard with Rev. Ermie Turney officiating

and Rev. Thomas Hill assisting. Burial followed in the East Bernard Methodist Cemetery under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Buck Boettcher, Charles Boettcher, Schlick Boettcher, Robert Russek, Richard Russek and Alan Crain.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Dyer of Dallas; one son, Victor Russek, Jr. of Houston; one brother, Col. R.B. Boettcher, Jr. of Destin, Florida and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Clem C. Boettcher.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Donnie Victorick. It was brought to the attention of the delegates that the flowers in front of the podium were given by Jeanette Smith (66) in memory of her late husband, Silas Smith (66). The Directors took the roll call of their respective districts. Darlene Engelke (66) reported an additional change to the Credentials Committee's reportLodge 25, Albin Bouska replaced by Patricia Fowler.

A letter of congratulations to the XXVth Convention was read from Tommie Lostak (139), who along with his wife, Gladys, is in Athens, Greece. This letter will appear in the Appendix.

Chairman Donnie Victorick relinquished the Chair to the Vice Chairman, Larry Pflughaupt, for approval of minutes. The minutes of the second session of June 20, 1988 reflect the following changes: Page 1, paragraph 2, line 2, should read "past leaders". paragraph 6, next to last line, add after "District V Caucus", "if his absenteeism was acceptable by two thirds vote of the delegates".

Page 2, paragraph 1, last sentence, after "motion carried" add "by two thirds vote". paragraph 3, Rita Vanek (40) said that there had not been a motion or a second to President Howard Leshikar's supplemental report. Frank Pajestka (80) made this motion, seconded by Joe Nezval (28). Motion carried.

Page 3, paragraph 2, line 3, should read "Arnold Vrla asked the delegates if they would like to go item by item or accept this report in its entirety..." paragraph 4, last sentence, change to read "Johnnie Krizan (6) asked for a uniform policy for each committee".

The minutes of Monday afternoon session 3, June 20, 1988, 3:40-5:00 p.m., were reviewed. Emil Matula (133) asked where in the minutes does it show that the per diem for standing committees was approved. Jerry Milan (154) said it was on page 1, paragraph 6, last sentence. Jerry Milan (154) made the motion to accept the minutes, Larry Laznovsky (135) seconded. Motion carried.

Arnold Vrla (130), Finance Committee Chairman, continued with the Finance Committee report. Under section marked "Officers Salaries", Cyrill Pokladnik (84) expressed support of the Finance Committee as did A.J. Kelner (28). Lonnie Lostak (139) made the motion that the Officers' salaries should be increased $1,200 instead of the $900. Motion failed for lack of a second. Leona Macha (40) asked if the Supreme Lodge has the authority to lower the salaries if the economy warrants. Motion and second by the Finance Committee to raise the Officers' salaries was approved as recommended.

After deletion of the sentence beginning "Salary to be reviewed..." motion was made and seconded by the Finance Committee to accept the changes in salary for the Legal Advisor carried as recommended.

In the section titled "Directors" in the Finance Committee report, the sentence "Salary to be reviewed..." should be deleted. Jerry Prochazka (65) spoke to the question regarding being consistent with the standing committee per diem and the Director per diem. Cyrill Pokladnik (84) felt that members did not really understand the responsibilities of the Directors. He cited instances pertaining to appraisals. Chairman Donnie Victorick asked the delegates if they would give Cyrill Pokiadnik (84) an additional three minutes to speak, and this was granted. Cyrill Pokladnik (84) asked for $125 for appraisals instead of the $100 recommended by the Finance Committee. Emil Matula (133) asked if the Directors received commissions from loans which they appraised. The answer was no. Johnnie Krizan (6) asked if the $100 was per appraisal or per day. Cyrill Pokladnik (84) responded that the most ever received was $200, and this occurred very seldom. The cost of the appraisal is included in the application fee. Johnnie Krizan (6) asked exactly what do "lodge functions" include. Finance Committee Chairman Arnold Vrla (130) understood this to be any function pertaining to SPJST. District VII Director Thelma Hrncir (79) explained some of the lodge functions in which she participated, and she also felt that $125 per diem was not enough. Pat Neskorik (88) asked the Finance Committee to give a district break-down on money received by the Directors for 1987. Edwin Adamek (29) said that the members actually pay the appraisal fee. Gilbert Walzel (81) made the motion that Directors receive $125 per day for appraisals. Motion failed for lack of a second. Herman Weise (160) asked for a clarification on per diem.

Finance Committee Chairman Vrla (130) said lodging, travel, and meals were in addition to per diem. Chairman Donnie Victorick said the committees also receive these remunerations. Matt Vanek (32) said he received $6,750 salary in 1987, performed eight to ten appraisals per year, and sold insurance part-time.

Albert Kubala (92) asked how much money comes in on application fees.

Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska said this depends on the size of the loan and is based on a sliding formula. According to past records, these had been self-sustaining and covered many costs entailed in processing mortgage loans.

For example: $20,000 loan has a $408 application fee. $40,000 loan has a $648 application fee. $60,000 loan has a $888 application. fee.

Finance Committee Chairman Arnold Vrla (130) read from the feasibility report given to the Supreme Lodge advising them not to undertake such a project at this time because of the enormous expense involved in building and managing such a project. Darlene Engelke (66) stated it was better for the elderly to stay in familiar surroundings and we could not expect our membership to support a retirement home based upon the percentage of our members now using the rest home facilities. Cyril! Pokladnik (84) spoke against the retirement home. A.J. Kelner (28) stated that he understood what Larry Pflughaupt (88) was trying to accomplish but that it could not be done now, but perhaps it could be done when they were old enough to go into one; however, the older people "are stubborn". The Chairman corrected him and requested that he use the word "more conservative" rather than "stubborn" because the older, people are not stubborn.

Item 11: The SPJST Pension Plan was reviewed by the Finance Committee and was in compliance with the IRS and TEFRA Regulations. Approved.

Arnold Vrla (130) reintroduced his committee by lodges and the Finance Committee was dismissed.

Editor Rudy Sefcik (54) thanked the delegates for allowing an increase in the number of pages in the Vestnik when necessary, but cautioned against members sending too many articles, as he could not guarantee that everything would be printed.

Hned na zaCatku byly velmi oblibeny kfiiovky „figuralni", vepsane do obrysu nejake postavy. Neplatila pro ne pochopitelne zasada soumernosti obrazce, vpisovanych siepych polieek nebo rozdelovacich linek. Na rozdil od dne§nich pravidel se tehdy v obrazci pouiivalo tei jednotlivYch polidek, ktera nebyla definovana, a dovolena byla i zamena pismen, obracene slova a podobne. Mezi prvnimi pracemi tohoto druhu je v Cisle 28 ze dne 3. Cervence 1926 hlava vousade se S'irakem, jejimi autorem je narodni umelec Jan Wench. Interesting New Year Superstitions In Germany those who were anxious to try to peer into the future at New Year's dropped molten lead into cold water and deduced shapes --- a ship might mean a journey --- a heart might mean a marriage. Eating black - eyed peas on New Year's was thought to bring good fortune by the Southerners of the U.S.A. The Swiss dropped some whipped cream on the floor, as they ate, to signify abundance. In Scotland, awaking to a brightly burning fire on New Year's Day meant prosperity in the coming year while a dull fire indicated trouble.

Few people now believe in these old superstitions, and the customs have generally fallen by the wayside; but nearly everyone wants to turn over a new leaf as a good start for the new year.

Ringing In The New Year Many European countries blow trumpets to the four corners of the world at New Year's. As the stroke of twelve nears, four trumpeters climb to the dominating tower of the town, then they play a hymn.

Sometimes a melody is arranged so that each trumpeter sounds a single note on his horn at one time. When the first note stops, the second begins, the third note follows the second, etc., until the whole tune is played.

Bells are muffled as they are rung in the British Isles before the stroke of midnight to show their grief at the old year's passing. Then, at the stroke of twelve, the bells are unmuffled to sound out clearly as they announce a new year with promises of happiness.
