In last week's issue we began publishing the XXV SPJST Convention Proceedings and will continue to do so when space permits; many of our members may wish to keep those issues (or pages) for future reference when you may wish to refer to them; they are being published for your convenience and the Supreme Lodge had a limited supply printed in .book form so this should help in case the demand would be too great. You are encouraged to read them -- they give a good picture and report on what your delegates did and how active they were in representing their members and lodges, and you can ask them about certain business taken up in the convention and the reason for the decisions that took place. You will be better informed about your Lodge's and Society's work during the four years between conventions held each leap year. ***

When you read these lines, Christmas Eve and Day will be just a little while in the future. May each and everyone of you (regardless of age), greet the occasion in perfect health and with a happy frame of mind. The Texas Highway Department of Public Safety estimates that probably as many as sixty lives will be lost on Texas highways during the holiday season period. It really is a dampening thought that, in the pursuit of enjoyable visiting with families and relatives, also spending the time with loved ones, there is always the spectre of death and injury (in various ways) awaiting all humankind. Our sincere and fervent hope and wish is that none of this happens to any of our readers.

Remember, no one can be too careful at any time, especially, now at the high speed of life on freeways and other highways; rather be a little late than never!

May all of you who read these lines live through a very happy, safe and enjoyable Christmas Season. ***

Channel 8 Houston Public Television Dear Mr. Ermis: Following my telephone conversation of this morning with Shirley Stonaker I am mailing to your office a copy of the news release about the special program on Czechoslovakia entitled, "Czechoslovakia: The Long Wait For Spring." This program will be airing on Thursday, December 22nd at 8:00 p.m. on Houston Public Television, Channel 8. I was hoping that you could print the information regarding this program in your weekly paper so that your readers will be aware of the air date and will have a chance to view it. I think that this will prove to be an interesting topic to you as well as to your organization.

The front page of this issue pictures the SPJST Christmas Tree in the SPJST Museum featuring all of the winning ornaments made by the youth of the six districts of our SPJST Society. Our SPJST congratulates our entire Youth Department for their continuous interest and success.

Speaking of keeping Christmas -Are you willing to forget what you have done for other people, and to remember what other people have done for you; to ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world; to put your rights in the background, and your duties in the middle distance, and your opportunities to do a little more than your duty in the foreground; to see that your fellowmen are just as real as you are, and try to look behind their faces to their hearts, hungry for joy; to own that probably is the only good reason for your existence and is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to give to life; to close your book on complaints against the management of the universe, and look around you for a place where you can sow a few seeds of happiness -- are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas. ***

Working forty hours a week without pay may not be your idea of a vacation, but it could be a cheap ticket to adventure. Two U.S. groups send hundreds of volunteers each year to Europe and other countries where they join archaeological digs, groom castle grounds, aid the handicapped and do other duties. The Council on International Educational Exchange in New York will place more than 300 in 1989; another - Volunteers In Peace hopes to send 425. Participants are usually under 35 or over 50. Most programs require no language or work skills. Typically, you will be grouped with 10 to 30 volunteers for two or four weeks, with weekends off, in exchange for room, board and tours.

Your bed may be a sleeping bag on the floor, and you will do the cooking.

Additional information may be obtained from the "International Workcamps" at (212) 661 - 1414. *** Investors who want to donate stock to a charity to avoid capital - gains tax and get a deduction should deliver the endorsed stock certificate by December 31st, since there isn't enough time for the issuing firm to re register the stock in the charity's name.

If the stock is in a brokerage account and you don't have a certificate, you may be able to open an account with your broker for the charity and transfer the shares into it.

You probably won't be paid until 1989 for stock you sell in the last week of December. Even so, any profit must be reported on your 1988 return. To defer paying tax on it, wait until 1989 to sell.

By using a credit card for donations, medical bills or business expenses, you can claim allowable deductions in 1988 even if you delay payment until 1989.

The IRS allows this if the debt is billed by a third - party credit card. IRS rules are vague but suggest that if you use a store's own card and are billed directly, you cannot take a deduction until you pay the bill.

Homeowners can up their 1988 mortgage - interest write - off by making payments in December that are due January 1st. Anyone who did that last year will have to do so again this year, or end 198.8 with .only eleven months of interest deductions.

Minutes Of A Special Meeting Of The Supreme Lodge SPJST Held December 2, 1988 At The Home Office In Temple, TX The special meeting was called to order at 10 a.m. with all Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, Pres.

Bernard M. Gebala, Vice Pres.

Leonard D. Mikeska, Sec. - Treas.

Jerry Mikulas, Fin. Sec. Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor Andrew Vavra - I Willie E. Kohutek - II Cyrill Pokladnik - III, Chairman of the Board Stanley Broz - IV Jerry Prochazka - V Matt S. Vanek - VI, Vice Chairman of the Board Thelma Hrncir - VII District V Director elect Louis Hanus was also present.

The purpose of the meeting was to give further consideration to the Family Recreational Area and the Referendum mandated by the delegates at the last convention and to set the premium refund formula for certificate holders and recommendation on refund to lodges.

FAMILY RECREATIONAL AREA (FRA) - Society Actuary John Agee was requested to do a study on three different scenarios for assistance in making the decision on the purchase of a family recreational facility. The study considered financial impact on initial expense of $500,000, $750,000 or $1,000,000 and an annual upkeep expense. His report was read and reviewed.

The proposition of leasing a facility instead of purchase was reviewed and discussed.

Architect Charles Voelter was retained to do preliminary work on developing a master plan and also developing some anticipated costs in building a long term development of an FRA. He was present to make a presentation of his findings and discussed the master plan he had developed.

Discussion followed and recess for lunch was taken from 12:05 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

The following ideas about the proposed FRA were discussed in great detail: 1. A master plan for developing a first rate FRA and whether the Society could afford the cost of acquisition and operation.

2.

The advantages and disadvantages of having an FRA. 3. The possibility of submitting a referendum addressing only the purchase of a site and leaving the decision to develop to a later date.

There was discussion as to whether the Supreme Lodge should give a recommendation on the FRA or to simply provide the data and allow the delegates to make a decision. Vice President Gebala moved that the Supreme Lodge not make a recommendation on the Family Recreational Area and that the delegates be asked by referendum to allow an additional nine months to study the FRA. Director Vavra seconded. Vote was taken. The following voted in favor: President Leshikar, Vice President Gebala, Secretary - Treasurer Mikeska, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Vavra, Director Vanek and Director Hrncir.

The following voted in opposition: Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Prochazka, Director Broz and Director Kohutek. Chairman of the Board Pokladnik abstained. Motion carried.

PREMIUM REFUNDS TO CERTIFICATE HOLDERS Consideration was given to a study and recommendation from Actuary John Agee that the SPJST continue to use for 1989 the same formula for premium refunds to certificate holders as was used for 1988. The following scale was adopted effective January 1, 1989: 3 percent of the current certificate year mid - terminal reserve on permanent plans for which a minimum of five full years' premium has been paid only, less $0.35 per premium - paying certificate less $1.60 per paid - up certificate. If the resulting refund is not at least $2.25, then no refund is to be paid. The Universal Life certificates and annuities are excluded.

The recommendation was approved on motion by Director Kohutek, seconded by Vice President Gebala.

Motion carried unanimously.

REFUND TO LOCAL LODGES Consideration was given to recommendation from Actuary John Agee on the matter of the refunds for 1988. The recommendation was set up to provide a dollar amount equal or greater than the previous year. The recommended percentage is 9.75 percent, an increase from 8.75 percent, on all collected premium excluding Universal Life and Annuities. An increased formula will be used in 1989.

The recommendation was approved on motion by Director Prochazka, seconded by Director Broz. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar moved that the meeting be adjourned. Director Vavra seconded and the motion- carried unanimously.

Chairman of the Board Pokladnik adjourned the meeting at 4:34 p.m.

REFERENDUM Dear Delegates: The XXVth Convention directed that the Supreme Lodge is to: establish a committee to investigate the purchase of land to build an SPJST recreational facility to be used by all of its members and within six months send out a referendum to be voted on by the delegates of this convention.

The Supreme Lodge has investigated this matter and finds that more study is 'needed and the Supreme Lodge is asking that the delegates extend the time for the recommendation to be made to October 16, 1989.

Although much information and data has been accumulated it has been found that this matter is more complex than was anticipated and due to the many factors involved the Supreme Lodge feels that more time is needed to adequately address this issue.

The Supreme Lodge recommends that you vote to extend the time for the recommendation to be made to October 16, 1989.

This issue is now submitted for your vote. In order for your ballot to be counted, it must arrive at the Supreme Lodge not later than January 6, 1989.

A stamped return envelope marked "Ballot" is enclosed for the return of your ballot.

Each delegate has the same number of votes as he or she had at the 1988 Convention. In the event of the death, incapacity or transfer to another lodge of a delegate, he or she shall automatically be replaced by the first substitute of that lodge.

Since the ballot will be kept by the Supreme Lodge Secretary - Treasurer unopened until the next regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge, it is important that you enclose only the ballot in the ballot envelope.

He is shown [left] conferring U.S. with the Honorable Representative Daniel Rostenkowski, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, who addressed the convention.

Dear Readers: On December 4, 1988 it was the beginning of our monthly lodge meeting which was called to order by President Johnnie Krizan. He then called on Keith Hykel to lead us in the Pledge to the flag and SPJST Motto.

He also asked Secretary Barbara Hykel to read the minutes of our last meeting. Karen Kroll gave the treasurer's report, Financial Secretary George Straten gave his report, which all reports were in order.

A congratulations card was sent to Bobby and Peggy Dobecka and their baby daughter, Traci Lynn, who was born November 18, 1988 and a card was sent to Henry and Christine Matus on their 55th wedding anniversary.

Youth Leader Willie Mae Schuetz gave her report of her leadership in the youth club; the donations to the West Rest Haven and some other doings.

Next was the nominating of the officers and they were elected as follows: President -- Johnnie Krizan Vice President -- Robert Dobecka Secretary -- Barbara Jean Hykel Treasurer -- Karen Kroll Financial Secretary - George Straten Reporter -- Ruth Krizan Youth Leader -- Willie Mae Schuetz 1st Assistant YL -- Peggy Dobecka 2nd Assistant YL -- Rose Marie Uptmor The officers were installed by Brother Rudy Sefcik and we want to thank him for this service and we were glad to have Rudy and Maxine with us at this party. We hope they come again soon whenever their time permits.

4/VESTNiK —Wednesday, December 21, 1988 At this meeting, the door prize winner was Bobby Dobecka. The progressive prize of $10 name drawn was Rhonda Ruzicka, second $10 prize -- Jeanette Beseda and third prize of $8 -- Elaine (Halamik) Gerik; none of these named were present. As always, at this last meeting of the year, we continue to draw the names for the progressive prize of one $10, until we draw someone's name who is present at the meeting. Here are all the names we drew before we had a winner: Willie M. Cervenka, Harvey Prnka, Fred Malina, Carolyn M. Taylor, Victoria Anderson, C.R. Vochaska, Larry E. Lovecky, Francis E. Thompson, Mary Ann Guillian, Patricia Landeros, Gina R. (Scheler) Grimm, and the lucky winner was -guess who? Willie Mae Schuetz.

Congratulations because I was glad the drawing stopped.

After all the business was taken care of, the meeting was adjourned to our Christmas Party which started visiting with each other until turkey supper was served. The youth program was next and at the end of the program, they started singing "Here Comes Santa Claus," and he came. The youngsters began screaming and running to him. Then he distributed bags of candy and fruit to all present.

Afterwards the gifts under the tree were passed out. It was a happy day for all young and old alike and everyone enjoyed it.

The next monthly lodge meeting will be Sunday, January 8, 1989 beginning at 1 p.m. The Board of Trustees meeting will be Friday, January 6th at 7:30 p.m. with a social following.

To whom it may concern and who says: "I don't like to go to meetings and maybe, I will like meetings and I'll go." So why not try, you might like it, too!

I wish and hope you and your family will have a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Lodge After our December 11th meeting was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance said, President Henry Breitkreutz introduced our guests, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and wife, Mary; also Adolph Pavelka, Lil and Jelly Pechacek, James Padgett, Tim Rasco, Mickey Adler and Mrs. Burney. It was nice to see all of you.

Secretary Rosemary Banik read the minutes of the last meeting, also gave the treasurer's report. Due to this being our December meeting, it was brief.

Then Supreme Lodge President Leshikar spoke also, saying he and Mary were glad to see all at the meeting and to be visiting Lodge 35.

A short Christmas program was given by the youth club members and enjoyed by all there.

The Lodge 35 officers were then installed by SL President Leshikar, and pictures taken.

Adult door prize went to Randy Pavelka and youth door prize was won

by Christopher Pavelka.

The meeting then adjourned and a social and supper were enjoyed by all.

This being my last report as reporter for Lodge No. 35, I want to extend to all members and friends, a joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy coming new year.

Lodge 47 Meeting Report

Those who will be celebrating birthdays in December are Sisters Binnie Mikeska, Claudette Reese and Dorothy Pechal and Brothers Wesley Tupy and Harry Gersbach. Happy Birthday to everyone!

Wedding anniversary celebrants will be Brother Woodrow and Sister Gladys Marek, Brother Claude and Sister Evelyn Wells, and Brother Jerry and Sister Dorothy Pechal. Hope you all will have a "Special Day" and many, many more years of health and happiness to everyone named and others who weren't present to be recognized whether birthday or wedding date.

Door prize winners were Sisters Theresa Chlapek and Gladys Malina.

The next meeting will be Sunday, January 8, 1989, the second Sunday because New Year's Day will be the date of our regular meeting date. The installation of elected officers will be held at 2 p.m., so make plans to come to this meeting plus the other eleven.

Make a New Year's resolution to become involved in lodge activities and participate more in the month to come.

There is work for improvements in membership participation.

The Christmas Party was attended by 440. The youth program was excellent, the free refreshments and the delicious turkey and dressing supper supervised by Brother Willie E. and Sister Adeline Kohutek. Many thanks to everyone for the abundance of salads and sweets and for helping with the preparations, also serving of the meal or refreshments. Thanks, also, one and all for coming to share in the fellowship.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: President Jerry Pechal called the December 4th lodge meeting to order at 2 p.m.

Flag Bearers Erin Skrabanek and Lori Greger brought in the flags. They led the pledge to the U.S. flag. We remained standing for a moment of silent prayer in memory of Brothers James Meek and Joe Divis. May these brothers rest in eternal peace after this earthly sojourn. The deepest of sympathy to the surviving families; these brothers will be missed by all.

President Pechal recognized visitors Ann Balusek, Gertrude Kahlig and Freddie Schroeder and welcomed all to this meeting. Visitors are encouraged Co come and socialize with the members, so you all are invited again, as are others.

Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives, plus the minutes of the annual meeting of November 6th. The correspondence included a thank you note from Sister Shirley Patterson for the get well card, a thank you from the family of Brother James Meek for flowers sent to his funeral service, a Christmas card from Brother Dan and Sister Helen Wiley; letters from Brother Howard Leshikar regarding the hosting of Torok, "42" and Straight Domino Tournaments, the participation of our lodge in the Volleyball Tournament, and an enlightenment of the duties of the Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and from Brother Willie E. Kohutek regarding the Vestnik mailing list; about 2,000 members didn't send their cards back, therefore they will not be reading this report.

Those hospitalized who we knew about are Brothers Mike Kamas, Lawrence Psencik, Robert Heese, Mark Franklin and Jerry Pechal and Sister Dorothy Bedrich, who passed away Tuesday, December 6, 1988.

Sister Barbara Brenek was in the hospital for a blessed event, the birth of their second son, Rickie Edward.

Congratulations to parents and grandparents! Hope those ill are all improving daily because you sure are missed at home.

The officers' reports included the lights have been installed, getting the last minute details worked out for the Christmas Party, set the audit date and getting some plumbing problems worked on from the president.

Lodge No. 81, Needville

Ruby Kuban was reported ill in Gulf Coast Medical Hospital in Wharton, Texas -- Room 212. We wish Ruby a speedy recovery and continued good health.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka spoke to us on several issues of SPJST business.

Our President Charlie Matcek delivered apples and oranges to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II for Christmas.

On January 8, 1989 we will, again, meet for our noon meal of fried chicken furnished by the lodge and our good sisters are to bring their favorite vegetable dishes and pastries.

We gathered around our beautiful Christmas tree decorated by Mary Matcek to sing Christmas carols. After singing several carols and while we were singing "Jingle Bells," a knock was heard on the door. What a surprise to see Santa Claus! A very happy Christmas spirit prevailed as we sang, and Santa and helpers gave bags of goodies to everyone present. Santa's arrival really added to our Christmas memories.

Door prize winners were Edwin Susan, C.H. Reininger, Mary Werner, and Rosie Lee Pieper, drawn by Melissa Vallet.

Men's Club Of Lodge 88 At Shangre - La

By Naomi Kostom Spencer It is nice to recall the day of November 13th which was spent at the bay - house, SHANGRE - La, as guests of Tim and Rosalee Kostom.

The Men's Club,together with their wives, was invited to enjoy fishing, swimming, if the weather permitted, or to play Poker, Bridge, Dominoes or a game of Checkers. There seemed to be participation in all these sports with the idea of enjoying the day, and everybody did just that.

The fisherman of the day, Gus Urbanovsky, came off with a fish just about "this long," while the Poker tables sounded like a jack - pot was won every few minutes. The Checker games came off with Arnold Spencer winning four consecutive games from Marie Stayton, much to her dismay, but they parted as friendly enemies. It was difficult to call it a day and to say "Goodbye."

The foursome who prepared the barbecued chicken and sausages included the chairman of the club, Ed Miculka, with Gene Barcak, A.J. Stayton and Bennie Kocich.

By the time they were ready to serve the barbecue, the ladies had prepared several tables laden with a variety of tasty dishes brought from home. Ellen Miculka with Oleta Hanus assisted Rosalee in setting the tables and getting them ready for the guests.

A word or two about the Men's Club. About three years ago a great idea was brought up by Ed Miculka.

He recognized the dedicated sisters of the Birthday Club. He realized how

So! What about a Men's Club? The idea took roots, and a group of retirees came up with the suggestion that the maintenance and care of the building would be shared with the Board of Trustees.

To my knowledge, this group started off with possibly a dozen members and after three years the membership has more than tripled. This caring group, in cooperation with the dominant responsibilities of the Board of

Trustees, is busy at all times keeping the grounds and building in order and in excellent operating condition.

It has been said that Lodge 88 is recognized as one of the cleanest and well - managed organizations in Houston. This is evident by the fact that there is no trouble renting parts of the building for charitable groups and that some of the finest people in surrounding Houston enjoy attending dances and other functions.

Dear Members and Friends: December 4th was a wonderful day for all fraternalists of the Metroplex four lodges in the area We all gathered at Lodge No 154 located in the Sokol building for a full day of activities. The meal was ready at 11:30 a.m. with the host lodge members serving in the kitchen and it was a delicious dinner of roast pork, beef and vegetables that was very tasty with plenty of desserts and drinks. All four lodges were well represented; it was great to see members who have not been together for a long time.

Members were greeting each other with "Merry Christmas" hugs, handshakes, etc.

After dinner our District III director was asked to install the officers which each lodge had elected to serve for the 1989. All our members congratulate the newly - elected brothers and sisters.

Lodge No. 154 put on a nice program aftere the installation and there was something special, a Santa from Czechoslovakia. He was dressed

in a robe with a wreath on his head. A very jolly Santa Claus, he was. He led the youngsters in Christmas songs and then he chose some members to come up front for singing the "Twelve Days of Christmas." Now that was something! Each member had to perform what happened on that day and you should have seen the partridge flapping wings, geese bobbling heads, rings on fingers, hen laying, dancing maid, flute playing, etc. After everyone performed their day everyone laughed and applauded. Santa was a young man who is an actor and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland. He is very talented, he has a TV program on Channel 39 from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. each day in Fort Worth. We are proud of him and many thanks to him for such a wonderful performance.

After the nice visit by Santa, the Czech Harvesters' Band started playing music for the dance; the music was fine, except it was so loud that it was hard to visit and listen. Why do the bands play so loud is beyond many of us who go to the dances; some members claim that is the reason they don't attend dances. Many years ago when orchestras played, they didn't

I believe that all the young people when they get older will be hard of hearing. Lots of us would like softer music. The bands from the northern part of the United States don't play so loud. But just the same all seem to have a good time when dancing and when they play the fun dances and change partners all get on the dance floor; the Cotton - eyed Joe, Birdie Song and the favorite waltz.

Next year it will be one of the other lodges that will be the host; each year a different lodge has the Christmas Party. It was nice to see Fran Wheat and daughter from Burleson, Bessie and Emil Petr from Dallas, Sid and Justine Pokladnik, Rudolph and Millie Wruble who come often to the lodge functions, Rudolph is on crutches so it must be hard to get around, but he doesn't give up, Joe (who is one of the past presidents of Lodge 92, Fort Worth) and Anna Juran (who is in a wheelchair), enjoyed seeing her friends. Joe Juran was operated on his arm due to a fall a while back and almost lost the use of the arm. Joe and Anna are being taken care of by their daughter and she does have her hands full. Millie and Slim Waters were enjoying the party; both of them are lots of fun, kidding around.

There will be no December meeting at our lodge, but come January 1989 we would like all members to make a rule to attend monthly meetings. Our meetings are held always on the second Sunday of each month at 2 p.m.

Sophie Blazek was confined to bed who had an operation on her foot; she is up and around after three weeks in bed. Carol Z. Everett, who lives in Cape Canaveral, Florida, always gets to see the space shots right from the front yard which are always interesting to see, had a fall and broke a rib or so.

Carol is our daughter, but liVing so far, we don't see her too often, we talk on the phone often. I hope all of you members of Lodge 92, who live out of - state, enjoy the Vestnik and can keep .up with the happenings in Fort Worth.

All members wish to extend to all of you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, also all of you are wished good health in 1989; to our editor and Maxine for being so nice printing our letters and pictures; to all the Supreme Lodge officers and their secretaries plus employees who are doing a great job, we wish you Happy Holidays!

Our Lodge 92 Christmas Party was held December 11th and our youth leader with his assistant put on a nice program. The young children sang Christmas songs and then "Jingle

Bells" was sung and that brought Santa Claus; the children gathered around Santa and his bag of toys.

They were hoping to get what they wanted and later when gifts were handed out, everyone came to Santa for a bag of apple,, orange, candy, nuts and gum. The ladies made sure there were plenty of cookies and punch during the evening. Let's not forget the real meaning of this time of year; it means Christ's birth and it is celebrated with Christ Mass.

- I just found out that Joe Zacek was operated on his back but is now at home, also that Brother Robert Jones passed away.

With this being my last letter for this year, I wish all of the members, friends and readers of the Vestnik a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year with good health and lots of happiness in 1989.

Lodge No. 161, La Parita A very enjoyable Christmas party and meeting were held at the Civic Center in Jordanton on Sunday, December 4, 1988 from 12:00 noon to 6 p.m., with thirteen members and three guests attending.

Tables decorated by Mrs. Don Valchar using candles, lit with pin cones added to the holiday season.

Milton Koch furnished the music.

Everyone joined in bringing gag gifts which brought lots of laughter.

Luncheon was served by each member's selection. Edith Chessir gave the table prayer, followed by everyone enjoying the good food and fellowship.

Lloyd House called the meeting together asking all to stand, repeat the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag, followed by a silent moment in memory of our Brother Joe Juricek.

Sister Tillie Koch was called upon to read the minutes of our last meeting, which were approved as read.

Old business was Sister Koch, secretary, asked that all members to call, giving the number of hours in helping, caring for the sick or elsewise, before middle of January.

This was Jerry's last official visit to the lodge as District V director. To show the lodge's appreciation for the direction, leadership, cooperation, and counsel during the past four years, Jerry was made an honorary member of the lodge's "Circle of Honor."

Both Marie Stayton and Helen Hegwood spoke to the membership giving an informative report on their areas of responsibility.

Ken Thornton reported that the renovation of the front of the lodge was almost completed. He expressed his appreciation to all who assisted.

Ken took a week's vacation to do the work and the task was completed in time for the President's Ball. He especially thanked James Blackburn for his technical advice and workmanship and Calvin Anderson for his supervision.

Jerry Sizemore made a motion that the lodge have country and western bands on the second and fourth Saturday nights during 1989 and a D.J. on the third Saturday. The membership in attendance agreed unanimously.

The lodge has participated in the "adopt a school program" for,the past three years. Herty Elementary is the school and during 1988 several members have donated their time representing the SPJST at Herty's events. The lodge has also covered the expenses of several items used at the events as well as making available the popcorn machine.

Lodge No. 88, Houston Czech Class Fall Term, 1988

Houston Lodge 88 Czech class celebrated another banner ten weeks of study. True to form, the group participated in what all Czechs love to do. We sampled delicious tidbits, tasted prune and poppyseed kolache and ate slices of houska.

An interesting visitor, Karel Zeman from Ceske Budejovice answered our many questions pertaining to life in Czechoslovakia. He is a graduate student of construction engineering.

His third trip to the United States was to complete studies in commercial construction.

Our students, John Havlik -accordianist, J.J. Brosch -saxaphonist, assisted by Paul Machae, added to the merriment. We sang old songs, some managed to dance around the tables and others entered into the spirit of the season attempting to squeeze newly - learned Czech phrases into their conversations.

There is something contagious about Czech activities such as this because the 26 students and 13 guests have already set the new schedule to begin January 23rd. Come join us. You are welcome!

Czech Class At Alief Alief Evening School, under auspices of AISD (Alief Independent School District), is again offering a Conversational Czech course at Hastings High School. The location of this school is between Bellaire Blvd. on the south and Alief - Clodine on the north on the southwest side of the intersection of Cook Road and High Star Drive in the community of Alief.

The first lesson of this 12 - week course, designed to develop basic skill in the Czech language wherever it is spoken, will be on January 18, 1989 and henceforth once a week on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Tuition, set by the school, will be $43 and the instructor will be John J. Karas of Houston.

Two Great Parties -Czech Style By: W.J. "Bill" Malina Czech heritage is alive and well in Texas, especially in the Harris County area. Sunday, December 4, and Monday, December 5, were good examples of brotherhood and comaraderie generated by interest in Czech heritage through the study of the Czech language. Although they were held on opposite sides of the county and on different dayS, the two separate gatherings had several striking things in common, the greatest of which was dedication to perpetuating the knowledge of the Czech language.

In the southeastern part of the county, at the facility of SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172 in Pasadena, the San Jacinto Czech Club held its annual meeting and Christmas Party on Sunday, December 4th. The San Jacinto Czech Club is composed of ex students who took at least one course of Czech at San Jacinto College or at Pasadena Lodge No. 172. The following day, in the northwestern side of Houston, the Czech class of SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 88 concluded its 1988 fall session with a celebration.

The participants at both events enjoyed traditional Texas - Czech style light snacks, fellowship, and Czech music. Needless to say that the light snacks turned out to be more like a full grown feast. Musical entertainment for the Pasadena meeting was provided by the Galveston County Czech Heritage Band, composed of Elsie and Eddie Darilek and Clarence Fee, Sr. An impromptu combo, composed of band leader. Jimmy Brosch, Paul Machac and Jan Havlik, provided the music for Lodge 88 gathering. The guests and members at both places joined in the singing of such old time favorites as "Louka zelend" (Green Meadow Waltz), "Cervene vino a bily kolaCe" Red Wine and White Kolache), Cervend sukjrnka" (Red Skirt Waltz), "Hora Shinerska" (Hills of Shiner) and many more. The fellowship generated by the music and eating of the good food gave credence to the old Czech saying "Kam eesi vafi, tam se doble dati" (where Czechs cook, there are good times).

Present at both occasions were visitors from Czechoslovakia, Petr Kalivoda from Karlovy Vary, was the guest of Bernard Pivonka at Pasadena.

Mr. Pivonka is the Czech instructor at Alvin Community College. Karel Zeman from Ceske Budejovice, was the guest of Victor Janak at Lodge 88.

Both groups are planning to hold Czech classes again early next year.

Watch for more information on these classes in upcoming issues of the Vestnik.

The common denominator for both events was "Pan Professor Bill 'Vilem' Souchek." Brother Souchek is the Czech instructor at Lodge 88 and was the first teacher of Czech at San Jacinto College. Bill was born into a Czech family in Iowa, but his work brought him to the Houston area of Texas. He retired from the Prudential Insurance Company in 1970 and decided to learn to teach the Czech language. Three years later his dream began to come true. In 1975 Bill became the first Czech instructor at San Jacinto College. Seven ex students of that class were present Sunday to exchange cordialities and share memories with Bill. Monday,

The students of the Czech class at Lodge 88 made sure that he celebrated it in grand fashion. At the age of 83, Bill is still full of life and merriment, there is never a dull moment when he is around. Words have to be borrowed from the last Czech play presented at Lodge 88 (Kos to zaridi) to describe Bill Souchek! "On je takoq star§i mladik," which is to say in English, "He is an elderly youngster."

Yes, we are -- we are still collecting used eyeglasses at Lodge No. 88, Houston for the indigent.

The program has been most successful during the past year and the total pairs collected now have reached 1,123 pairs.

Many pairs of eyeglasses have been left in the lodge office that did not have donors' names written on the packages. Our thanks to these donors and all of the known donors for this cause.

Many financially strained individuals benefit from these gifts by receiving "eye cards" from the Lighthouse of Houston which assists them in obtaining eyeglasses at reduced cost.

Those of us in this category certainly like to think of ourselves as youngsters, and there are some benefits for us if you are interested in saving money.

Are you aware that there is an AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) mature driving course to be conducted at SPJST Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 on Thursday and Friday, February 9th and 10th.

Time is 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. both days and the cost is only $7 per person for • both sessions.

There is a substantial savings on the auto premium on the liability portion of your policy.

Anyone 50 years or older whether retired or still working is eligible to attend.

Another benefit is removal of a fine resulting from a moving traffic violation and the violation is not recorded on your record. Pretty good, eh?

The course material covers the effects of aging (isn't this a nasty

word?) and medications on driving, basic driving rules, license renewal, local traffic hazards, adverse road conditions, energy saving, and accident prevention measures.

There is no behind the wheel driving nor any written or oral examination -slides presentation and oral discussion are the order of the day (half day, that is).

King Daryl and Queen Marcy with Youth Christmas Tree.

State King And Queen Participate In Temple's Christmas Parade December 5th was the date for the 1988 Temple Christmas Parade. The theme for this year's parade was "LIGHTS." King Daryl Kortis and Queen Marcy Dorotik rode in a 1989 Chevrolet convertible covered in white sparkle lights and red ribbons. The convertible was driven by District II Director Willie E. Kohutek. Banner carriers for Daryl and Marcy were Daryl's brothers, James and David.

The night was cool and dry as a crowd of over 12,000 viewed the couple as they passed through the parade route.

A special thanks to Daryl and Marcy for once again doing an outstanding job in representing our Society.

From The Youth Leaders Lodge 6, Cottonwood Christmas Activities Dear Members and Friends, The youth club meeting was held on December 4, 1988 at 3 p.m. with a fair attendance.

They sold tickets on Christmas items and they did real well. This was their money - making project. 1 want to thank all of you who donated items for this project.

The Christmas supper was at 5 p.m.

After supper, the youth club had their Christmas program with Santa Claus and exchange of gifts. Everyone had a lot of fun.

My thanks to each of you for the nice gifts you gave me.

The youth club members are taking gifts to the West Rest Haven on December 20th at 7 p.m.; those of you who can come to the home, do so.

Donated items to needy families included cakes to Rest Home, clothes to Caritas and paper to St. Mary's School.

On December 2nd, the youth members and their families of Lodge 6 gave Peggy Dobecka, my first assistant youth leader, a baby shower. The baby is a little girl named Traci Lynn who received many nice gifts.

Birthday celebrants for December are Becky Mynar, Raymond Joe Hromadka and Kevin Mach.

Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Activities Dear Readers, Well, the holidays are almost over and we at Lodge No. 39 are ready to slow our schedule down and get back to a regular pace before we begin to start thinking about YAD. Don't laugh, it will get here as fast as Christmas did! Enough for that. Let's not dwell on it.

I guess you would say our biggest project was building our float for the Holiday Parade. It was lots of work but we had fun along with all the hard work. I would like to thank some parents who were very helpful throughout the work. First, I would like to thank Renea and Eddie Macik in helping, by getting the donations needed for the building of the float and then being there whenever they were needed. Also, I would like to thank Sue and J.P. Wade for donating the use of a trailer and then for housing the float for the month that we worked on it. Parent workers I would like to thank are Marilyn Klimek, Elaine Luza, Janice and James Ebner, Carolyn Kubin and Ernest Kubin for cutting all the shrubs we needed on the float and, especially, my husband who never complained when I needed something at the last minute.

Our Christmas Party and Dance were a success and the little ones enjoyed visiting with Santa Claus and we had enough food to last the entire night.

Our next get - together will be Christmas caroling at 6:30 p.m. on December 20th. We will be meeting at my house and then walking to the nursing home and caroling on the way.

After the caroling, the teens only will be staying for a movie at my house.

Letters From The Youth Lodge 30 Youth Participate In Parade Dear Vestnik Readers, On December 1st, Lodge No. 30 Youth Club entered a Christmas float in the El Campo Christmas Parade.

Thanks to Leroy Kaspar for helping put it together and Jerome Dorotik, Jr. for driving the float. The weather was beautiful and the parade was very colorful.

Santa was in town Friday, December 2nd and brought SPJST pens to all youth club members.

A combined meeting and Christmas Party was held for members and parents.

Candy cane reindeer were made to be given to the rest home.

The meeting was short and items discussed were a mask contest for January 1989 meeting for new year and the T - shirt contest for camp was explained.

Door prizes were won by Derrick Morris, Lisa Reck, Lisa Morris, Jared Dybala, Rebecca Wilson and Sharon Borak. All members who decorated a present received a cash gift.

The club members exchanged gifts.

We presented our leader with a gold pin. Visiting and folk dancing was enjoyed.

Our next meeting will be held on the first Thursday in January 1989.

Brother Fred is survived by his wife, Bernell Bezanson of Waco; his mother, Lillian Cantori and one brother, David Bezanson of West Virginia.

Brother Fred was a retired U.S. Army soldier of 21 years. He worked for Fleetwood Mobile Homes and was an SPJST member since February 1977.

Ve 2 hodiny pfedseda fadu bratr Trilieek zahajil schilzi. Po slibu vet-nosti vlajce jsme uctili pamatku zesnulYch elemi jednou minutou ticha.

Tajemnice fadu sestra J. Poppova pfeeetla zpravy z minute schilze a vge bylo pfijato beze zmeny. Pak podala finaneni zpravy, proto 2 . e je tea nage pokladni. Sestra Dlugoshova podala zpravy od zabavniho vYboru a oznamila, ze bratr Kalmus daroval $2.-, sestra Fajkusova 1 lb kavy a bratr a sestra Kleprlikovi $10.- Velmi nas potegilo, ze sestra Marcella Kleprlikova pfigla mezi nas. Rekla, ze Jaroslav se citil dobfe a byl rad is e Marcella ptijde na schuzi. Bolesti v zadech ui nema a je v dobrem dugevnim stavu. Posila nam vgem mnoho pozdrava. 18. listopadu to bylo 6 mesicil co je v tom dome odpoeinku. Marcella dekuje vgem za pohlednice, ktere elenove posilaji Jarkovi a za jejich nav gtevy. A l ona a Jarka pfeji v gem Vesele Vanoce a SfastnY NovY Rok! Na lists nemocnYch je: Joseph Matula vnuk bratra Emila a sestry Evelyn Matula; je v nemocnici v Kansas City. Sestra Annie Sweyzy a bratr Jerry Sliva byli v nemocnici ale ted' se zotavuji doma. The sending of Christmas cards dates back to approximately 1860. The Christmas tree has been traced back to the Romans, thence to Germany, then to Great Britain and finally to the United States.
