"United we stand; divided we fall."

How many of us remember that profound statement? Well, it stands true to this date. Our Supreme Lodge is pleased to announce that, for the present time, Mr. Woody Pogue, the Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, has stated that he would recommend to the three members of the State Board of Insurance that the proposed bill to license all sales representatives not be presented to the upcoming session of the legislature and would recommend :hat a committee be appointed to study what, if anything, is needed and report back sometime prior to the 1991 session of the legislature. It is assumed that the three members of the State Board of Insurance will follow the recommendation of the Acting Commissioner of Insurance.

After an informative conversation with Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, your editor learned that the above was the result of a combined effort of the Texas domiciled fraternal societies working together -- the SPJST, Hermann Sons, KJT, KJZT and Catholic Life and presenting their case in unison after Discussing how the proposal would effect our Texas - based fraternal societies. That is the only way anything of substance can be accomplished. In the past, some individuals wanted to feel that they could do much more by individual action, however, in many there is strength and we have to set "ego" aside. Here we see what cooperation among organizations, Striving for the same purpose, can accomplish. SL President Leshikar stressed that point and our entire Society is grateful for his and, especially, Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir's wise and important counsel at the sessions and the results obtained in cooperation with the officials of the other fraternal societies!

Surely all members of the above mentioned fraternal societies operating in the State of Texas welcome the news and appreciate the combined efforts of the various officials of these fraternal organizations. From what this editor has been able to learn, it seems that up to some 5 or 6 years ago the Insurance Department including the Commissioner did not have quite enough information and knowledge of the large amount of good, benevolent and fraternal work our societies do; it is certainly appreciated that this condition has been improved very much in the last 3 or 4 years by the various meetings held between the representatives of fraternal societies and members of the Insurance Department, who, until recently, probably had heard from only one side of the insurance industry. ***

Thanksgiving Day has come and gone and many of us are thankful and some citizens wonder what they are to be thankful for, especially if they are among those who went to a center to receive at least one free meal given to them by others who are more affluent.

This writer does not accept the theory and thoughts, held by many of our politicians, that our below - the poverty average citizens are there and in that status because they choose to

be. There is no question that most of them would be glad to work if there was work available for them to do.

True, there are some who wish to live off of others and live on handouts, however, there is an overwhelming majority of our fellow United States citizens who want and wish to do honest work for what they receive. Let us hope that in this, the richest country in the world in resources, the difference between the rich and poor will decrease instead of increasing. *** While banks and savings and loans struggle with setbacks, credit unions are healthy. Banks' profits fell 79 percent last year; savings and loans lost $3.8 billion in the first quarter of 1988. But credit unions' net income rose 13.5 percent in 1987 and continues to grow. One reason: The small consumer loans made by credit unions to their members -- some 50 million -have been secure. Enhancing credit union strength is the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, set up by Congress in 1970 and backed by the U.S. Treasury. Like federal depositors' insurance at other financial institutions, the fund protects accounts for up to $100,000. It can give financial aid to faltering credit unions, help merge weak ones into stronger ones to liquidate insolvent unions and pay off depositors, usually within 2 weeks. About 85 percent of the country's 16,910 credit unions have this federal insurance. Virtually all credit unions not covered by the NCUSIF are comparably insured by one of 11 private insurance firms. But in a crunch, these can't match Uncle Sam in resources or in assuring peace of mind, so it's safest to use NCUSIF backed institutions. *** Vietnam - era veterans will find the search for combat buddies easier as more of them put their names and service histories into the data base of the Vietnam Veterans Registry, a nonprofit service in Bridgton, Maine, that helps those who served in Vietnam or elsewhere during the war years find each other. The registry was founded in 1985 by Larry Horn, a vet who tried without success to organize a reunion of staff and patients at a hospital where he was treated. To get a registration form, send a stamped, self - addressed business envelope to the Vietnam Veterans Registry, Inc., PO Box 430, Bridgton, Maine 04009.

When you ask for help finding someone, you'll be notified if the person is registered; Horn will then forward a letter for you. If you're looking for a group -- those who fought in a specific battle, say -- the computer will provide names. The service is free, and none of the date will be given out or sold. *** Long as the water's hot, most people don't give much thought to their water heaters. But a bit of unconventional preventive maintenance can more than double the 10 - to - 15 - year life of a typical unit. Simply inspect the anode -- a long rod of magnesium or aluminum suspended inside the tank -every two years. If it's badly pitted, replace it. A chemical reaction with the anode keeps the heater's steel tank from corroding -- but only as long as the anode is intact. To remove it, you'll first have to turn off the gas or electricity and empty the tank. The anode is attached to a hexagonal nut on top of the unit. Unscrewing the nut lets you pull out the rod. Hardware and home - center stores may not carry anodes, but most plumbing - supply houses do, or you can order one from a national plumbing retailer.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood On Sunday, November 13, 1988 was our regular monthly Lodge 6 meeting, at 1 p.m., which opened with the Pledge of Allegiance by Keith Hykel, Tammi and Celia Dobecka, and the SPJST Motto was read by Tammi Dobecka. Then President Johnnie Krizan began with the business meeting proceedings. He called on all the officers to give their reports. All reports were approved as given.

The special discussion was about our Christmas Party and it was decided by the membership to be on December 4th at 1 p.m. We will also have the election of officers. All members are asked to be sure and come and vote for the ones you wish to serve the lodge next year.

Following our meeting, turkey with all the trimmings will be served for supper and members are asked to please bring a dish or sweets of your choice that will go good with turkey meat. After supper there will be a program by the youth members and Santa Claus will arrive after the program to pass out bags of goodies to all present youngsters and also exchange of gifts to the ones whose names were drawn.

Whoever wants to bring a gift may do so to put under the Christmas tree to be passed out.

Another special date was set for our Appreciation Party for all the workers who usually work at our Lodge 6 Picnics and Westfest or any other work they did for the good of our lodge. All members and workers are invited to these two events.

Due to Thanksgiving holidays, my report will be short. I will write more of the business and happenings that were held at our last monthly meeting.

The last meeting's door prize went to Lydia Dobecka and progressive prize name drawn was first $10 Jeanette Beseda, second name Raymond Joe Hromadka, and $7 Albin J. Laubert.

Our Trustees' meeting will be held December 2nd at 7:30 p.m. and Lodge 6 monthly meeting will be Sunday, 1 p.m.

9, Snook Combines Annual Meeting With Yuletide Lodge

The SPJST Lodge No. 9, in Snook, has planned its annual business meeting with Yuletide festivities on Sunday, December 11, 1988 at the SPJST Hall in Snook. Everyone is cordially invited for an evening of fraternal fellowship, food and fun.

No. 17 New Tabor

Dear Members: On November 6th, New Tabor held its regular monthly meeting with all officers present. Reporter Lola Vavra was absent.

A resolution was read for departed member Donald Havel. We would like to extend our sympathy to his friends and loved ones.

We had one new member; we would like to welcome Oscar Campise to our lodge.

Our annual meeting will be held December 4th at 2 p.m. at which time we will have election of officers.

Our memorial service will start at 5:30 p.m. We will have a program with a turkey dinner following. We need the ladies of our lodge to please furnish sweets for this meal; also if you would like to help cook the meal, contact Gladys Hejl -- 272 - 8160 or Lola Vavra -- 272 - 8043.

The Granger SPJST Lodge No. 20 will have their annual meeting and Christmas Party on Sunday, December 4th, at 3 p.m., at the Granger SPJST Lodge Hall.

Dear Members: The annual meeting of Lodge Karel Jonas will be held on December 4th, at 2 p.m., in the lodge hall on the corner of Leveridge and Main Streets. The agenda will follow the regular "Order of Business" and will have some special reports plus the election of officers for 1989. Along with the election of officers, a new OFFICIAL office is to be filled. This office was created by a "By - law" change in the XXV Convention and it will fill a void that will keep our organization a fraternal society. Also, there may be some special guests present at the meeting.

A luncheon and fraternal gathering, after the meeting, is scheduled as usual. This being an annual meeting, however, the lodge plans to furnish something extra and is asking the lodge sisters, if they wish, to bring some kind of baked goods.

In November, the monthly meeting was held on the 6th. A bare quorum was present to pass a motion to have something special for the December monthly meeting, since it will be the annual meeting. All reports were given as scheduled and accepted. A full discussion was held on the new office that was created in the convention.

The meeting adjourned for the luncheon.

Sister Lillie Sontag won the door prize. A second prize, which required a person to guess the number of candy corns in a jar, was won by Sister Frances Haverda with a guess of 300.

There were 305 pieces of candy in the jar.

Along with the luncheon, the air was filled with ideas being discussed on things to do. Sisters Sontag and Nezval along with Brothers Lupik, Kubena and "Tony" Kelner augmented the food furnished by the lodge.

On another subject, the "Czech National Cemetery Association" will retain its name because of some minor complications and identification recognition. One correction will have to be made in county, state and other government records for they have the cemetery and the association listed as "BOHEMIAN" and NOT "CZECH" which is the CORRECT translation.

No. 54, West Third Quarterly Meeting

Lodge

President Ted Kocian called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. on September 11, 1988 at Lone Star Hall.

All officers were present.

All present stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag led by Jennifer Kocian. Everyone remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of all departed brothers and sisters of the lodge.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the May 22nd meeting.

These were approved as read.

Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik reported -- a new member, Ryne Scott Zahirniak was signed up by Sales Representative Bernice Pustejovsky and new annuities were secured by Lawrence T. Junek and Barbara B. Junek by SR Johnnie Krizan. Our lodge now has a total of 340 active members, 320 paidup members for a grand total membership of 660.

Treasurer Freddie Kaluza gave the treasurer's report which was also approved as read.

President Kocian asked the delegates to the convention to give a short report. All reports were favorable and all delegates reported having an enjoyable time and found the convention to be very informative.

Sister Maxine Sefcik drew for the door prize which was won by Jennifer Kocian.

The meeting was adjourned and everyone enjoyed refreshments, fellowship and a meal.

Our last quarterly meeting will be held at 2 p.m. on December 4th. This will be a very important meeting because we will have election of officers for 1989. This will also be our Christmas Party. Santa Claus will make an appearance after which we will be treated to a Christmas meal.

Food will be provided by the lodge but members are asked to bring desserts.

Our regular monthly meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. on November 20th by President George Pauling.

Flags were presented by Larry Yates and Bill Warren with Michael Warren leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Lodge Motto. Everyone was asked to remain standing for a moment of silence for our deceased members, Brother Fred Bezanson and Brother Delma Tipping.

Guide Tommy Frobes read the roll call of officers and all were present.

Secretary Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of our previous meeting and they were approved. She also read a letter from SL President Howard Leshikar that he will be able to attend our Christmas Party on December 3rd.

Wednesday, November 30, 1988—VESTNIK /5 meeting and they were approved. Our next Board of Trustees' meeting will be on December 1st at 7 p.m.; we will also decorate the hall that day, so let's all come and help.

The Entertainment Committee report, given by Sister Gloria Locke, concerned the upcoming holiday season. Lodge 66 Christmas Party will be December 3rd with turkey dinner with all the trimmings served at 5 p.m.

Members are asked to bring desserts.

Sister Gloria Locke sent get well cards to Aline Wright, Mary Nell Barak, Ed Mazanec, Billy Royals, Blanche Lewis, Evelyn Seith, Ira Niswanger and Raymond Shelton.

Sister Jeanette Smith read a "thank you" from Caritas.

Youth Leader Gladys Yates reported there were 24 members, 8 adults and 2 visitors present at the meeting. They will be practicing for their Christmas program. December 20th they will have a meeting and a party and will also exchange gifts. They plan to have gifts for a nursing home.

Sister Libbie Parma received donations for the Trust Fund from Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Mueller for Ira Niswanger, Jeff Warhol, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Parma for Jeff Warhol, Jeanette Smith for Jeff Warhol and Bonnie Pruitt for Jeff Warhol.

The Auditing Committee chairman reported that all books were in good shape.

New members accepted were Heather Long, Betty Jo Stone, Darren Lane Collier, Peggy Cowan, Sherry Meir (conversion from JT to Life) and one transferee, David Earl Tierce.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our departed members, Brothers Fred Bezanson and Delma Tipping.

President George Pauling reported on the District III meeting, there were 58 members from our lodge in attendance.

Sister Georgie Pavlicek won first prize on her pecan rolls and second place on apricot kolache.

The youth club members also received prizes for the ornaments they made.

The District III spring meeting will be held at Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

There will be a quilt and horseshoe contest.

Sister Darlene Engelke received a check for the second place winner in the volleyball contest. They will use it for the material they need.

Sister Irene Mueller gave up taking pictures for the lodge Sister Jeanette Smith will take pictures for our lodge.

Due to the Christmas holiday season, we will not have a meeting in December, only our Christmas Party.

Dear Members and Readers of the Vestnik: We held our regular monthly meeting on Sunday, November 6 at 2 p.m.

President Bohac called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. We were asked to rise and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag and remained standing in memory of our deceased members of our Order.

All the officers of our lodge were p. esent.

Secretary Latham was asked to read the minutes of our October meeting.

They were accepted as read. The secretary also gave reports for the bar, kitchen, entertainments and games.

The new tables in the hall look very nice; they were donated by American Legion Post No. 526 of Holland. We salute the Legionnaires for these nice gifts. The Legion is a great help to us at our games and many of them are our members of the local SPJST Lodge No. 80.

We donated $25 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Richard Carlou who was a member of our lodge and passed away recently.

Well, the holidays are here upon us, so everywhere you go, you hear turkey talk and, of course, right after Thanksgiving is Santa Claus.

We all should be thankful for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us this year for the bountiful crop, health, etc.

Our annual meeting will be held on Sunday, December 4th at 1 p.m. We are asking all our members to please make this meeting because you know we elect our officers at this meeting, so please make it a point to come. Please come to the meeting and then from 4 to 9 p.m., we are having a battle dance featuring Charles Mikeska and The "Sensations" vs. Fritz Hodde and The Fabulous Six. No. 88, Houston News Lodge

On Sunday, November 13th the Men's Club members and their spouses were invited to Tim and Rosalee's Shangrilia place on the bay at San Leon. It was a beautiful day -- let's say a perfect day, not too hot, and not to cold, just comfortable. Ed Miculka, president of the club, Gene Barcak, A.J. Stayton and Bennie Kocich were the cooks. They barbecued chicken and sausage and you wouldn't believe how many exotic dishes were brought by the wives and guests Their place is just beautiful and so spacious, just right for this happy group of people. It seemed like everyone left their troubles

at home. The games that were played were chess, 42, straight dominoes and several tables of poker. Some were lucky in this game and some lost, similar to Las Vegas; you either win or loose. It seemed like no one wanted to go home; it was almost dark before we finally left, and that's an indication that it was a most enjoyable day.

I went out to eat one day and who should be at the same place also eating Milert Antrich had a birthday; he is almost at the end of a decade (didn't say what decade). His beautiful daughter Jenevie took her father and mother out for a birthday dinner. He said his other three children live out of - town, otherwise he'd be taken out three more times. Milert has an eye for business!

Gus and Ann Gerlich's only son from Denver, Colorado is moving back to Houston. I'm sure Gus and Ann are delighted about that.

On November 14, 1988 we had our monthly meeting. President Jerry Ermis opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

We didn't have the minutes from the previous meeting because our Secretary Carolyn Sager wasn't able to be there. First Vice President Marceil Malak took the minutes. Here are a few of the highlights of our meeting.

We _ initiated two new members, Margaret Spahr and Leo Lobprice. We welcome you to our Society and Margaret has already joined the Birthday Club.

Crystal Wallace announced the Youth Christmas Party and Program on December 12th at 7:30 p.m. Be sure and take notice of this because that is such a happy occasion for all these many little boys and girls, and do attend grandmothers and grandfathers besides their parents. Life would be so dull without these precious little children.

The next annual affair is the Choral Group going to Needville on December 17th to present all those beautiful Christmas songs and also Czech songs.

Grandma Hanka, Mrs. Helen Valcik and Mr. Dobesh are a few I know love these songs (Czech Heritage). Most of the residents look forward to this day, which gives them the Christmas spirit.

Harley Cox gave the Entertainment Committee report. He stated that he had a very good 1988. He announced the bands and dates for the dances in November. Do check the schedule on Page 15 in the Vestnik, and there is a schedule in the ticket booth through June, 1989. He announced our New Year's Eve Dance on December 31st from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. with John Sullivan Big Band music; pay for your tickets by December 1st at $25 a couple. NOTE: Be sure to report to Shirley any portion of your table open for this dance.

Homer Alexander gave the report on Fraternal Affairs. He will have a driving course on February 9th and 10th.

Gene Barcak gave the Choral Group report. He asked the members to join, if they can sing as well as he can.

Tim Kostom gave a short report for the Building Committee.

(Orchestra Report -- The Lodge 88 Orchestra enjoyed a very successful month in October. Czech Day at the State Fair, in Dallas, on October 16th was a total success. The weather was fine, the bandshell area was full of dancers, and the Lodge 88 Orchestra was in top form throughout our uninterrupted program. We received many compliments. Stacy Zhanal Athas told me two weeks later that the SPJST Lodge 88 Orchestra was mentioned by name in at least one of

the local papers. SPJST and our lodge got favorable publicity in Dallas.

The orchestra played during mealtime on Czech Day on October 30th. We saw a lot of familiar faces.

On November 6th, we played at Lodge No. 172, in Pasadena, along with the Choral Group. Calvin Chervenka kindly did MC duty for us, going into a bit of the history behind some of our songs. We shared the bill with many other fine acts so there was dancing and fun for all.

To round off 1988, we will be playing for a Christmas Party at the Dominican Rest Home on December 4th.

One of my duties as orchestra secretary is to record manhours from the group. I have compiled orchestra manhours from January through October and turned them over to our Benevolence Reporter Mary Kosut.

November and December manhours will be turned in closer to the end of the year, reported by Orchestra Secretary Kathryn Jolly.)

Joe Miksch, the bar manager and Annie Vala, kitchen manager, both thanked all who helped on Czech Day. Margaret Allbritton, the Blue Room manager, announced the Blue Room Party on December 18th. Everybody must be getting excited about this gala affair by now. There will be plenty drinks, food and dancing for only $10 a person.

Willie Wehring, Social Night Committee chairman, gave a very favorable report.

Kathy Trefell, president of the Birthday Club, invited the officers and the board and their spouses for our Christmas turkey dinner on December 7th. Lillie Spies, our treasurer and pastry booth manager on special occasions, thanked all the ladies who

helped ther ; also a special thank you to Lowrina Lindemann and Lydia Marsh.

Professor Souchek announced that he had 26 members in the Czech Class at Lodge 88, the largest class in the State of Texas. He also gave a very good talk on scholarships.

District V Director Jerry Prochazka gave an informative account on scholarships.

Tillie Helmcamp, District V president, announced our spring meeting on March 12, 1989. She then talked about the sad thing that happened at Danbury. Tommie Lostak, who was District V treasurer for many years, lost his precious wife, Gladys, who was loved by all who knew her, and will certainly be missed by her nice family. You have our sympathy, Tommie and family. Tillie also had forgotten to thank Helen Hegwood, Rita Alexander and Lillie Spies for the work they did at the Crosby District V Family Day. Ed Miculka reported for the Men's Club. He complimented Tom Marsh who was in charge of their drawing for Czech Day and did a fine job. Also the men were asked to cleanup the ballroom and the tedious job of cleaning the beautiful but fragile chandelier. He mentioned Emil Bily and Louis Hanus who have worked with the flower beds for hours.

Tom Marsh reported for the Auditing Committee. All books were in order.

Bobby Miksch gave the Board of Trustees' report.

We then adjourned for a delicious lunch.

SPJST Orchestra Has Busy Summer And Fall

The SPJST Lodge No. 88 Czech Concert Orchestra of Houston, Texas, had a busy summer. They performed at seven rest homes, Veterans Hospital, Fort Bend Czech Fest, St. Joseph's Multi - Ethnic Festival, and the Dallas State Fair.

They also played for Lodge 88 Czech Day, District V Family Day, Lodge 172 Czech Heritage Day and some Octoberfest celebrations. Some of the residents of the Autumn Hills Nursing Home and the Golden Age Rest Home had a swell time dancing the polkas and waltzes in wheelchairs.

Secretary Alice Jochen held roll call of officers; all officers were present, except Vice President Gus Florian, Guide Frank Tumis and Youth Leader Elizabeth Hermis. Then the secretary read the minutes from our previous monthly meeting, which stood approved as read.

Board of Trustees and Bar reports were read by Rosie Schilhab.

Brother Sidon Tumis gave the financial secretary and treasurer's report.

Youth Club report was given by Amanda Hermis.

Sick Committee reported Henry Hermis, Sr. and Ralph Barnes had been in the hospital. Here's wishing both members the best of health in the future.

All committee reports were given.

New members are Colette Ann Baronowski, Catherine Ann Davis, Kristi N. Bielamowicz, Vincent G. Battaglio, who were signed up by Sales Representative Sidon Tumis; and six additional insurance applicants.

President Dennis Hermis recognized our visitor, District V Director Jerry Prochazka and his wife, Delores.

Brother Prochazka took the podium and spoke on the recent Supreme Lodge meeting.

Wedding anniversaries for November are Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hovar, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Jochen, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Stein, Mr. and Mrs. Mabry.

Birthday celebrants are Maggie Cernoch, Michael Schleider, Alene Kieschnick, Mary Ann Kieschnick, Henry Linhart and Martin Kieschnick.

Other visitors welcomed to our meeting included Jo Ann Buri, Jo Buri, Delores Prochazka, W.H. Leitko, Richard Lawhorn and Kathy Linhart.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, December 11th at 2 p.m. This is our annual meeting, a very important meeting with election of officers and committees at this meeting.

The capsule drawing for $100 went unclaimed due to the absence of Larry Stancik.

Next month, at our annual meeting, we will, again, draw for $100 attendance prize. Come to our meeting because you may be the lucky winner.

Rozkvet No. 172, Pasadena The Christmas lodge social has been set for Saturday, December 17, starting with a "Happy Hour" between 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., and then a buffet covered dish dinner at 8 p.m.

This event will be held in our social room and, at 9 p.m., the dance will start, with music by the Original River Road Boys. Details in later issues of the Vestnik.

Ticket sales for the New Year's Eve dance are 50 percent complete and, if you still want good seating, please purchase your tickets soon. We will not hold reservations this year, so when you purchase your tickets, you make your reservations. Music by the Texas Brew, black - eyed peas, sausage and cornbread at midnight and party favors when you enter the ballroom; dancing from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m.

Our Nominating Committee is busy obtaining potential officers for 1989.

We need help in the bar and kitchen, so please do your share and assist our lodge. If we have several couples to work this, it will make it better for those who are carrying the load now.

Members of Lodge No. 172, don't forget our monthly meeting to be held on November 30, 1988, due to Thanksgiving Eve on our regular date, please attend.

November 6th Election Meeting President Louis Grochoske opened our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

After roll call of officers, the minutes of our previous meeting were approved as read by Secretary Frances Simmank.

A letter from the Supreme Lodge was read suggesting the vice president take over the position of coordinator of fraternal activities, if no other person is available.

It was voted to donate money for Christmas to a rest home in this area

Mydell Grochoske mentioned that she attended the sales representatives' seminar.

A warm welcome to new member Monica Marie Keller who was accepted.

Wayne Tolson, my son, Ruth Beasley of Holland, Texas, Opal Herrin gton of Cameron, Texas (two of my sisters) and I attended the Retirement Ceremony of Master Chief Aircraft Maintenanceman James Gary Tolson, Sr. at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas on October 31, 1988. It was also Gary's birthday. He has served his country 27 years and I am very proud of my son. His wife, Cora, has been at his side most of those years and 1 know being a serviceman's wife is not easy. They will make their home in Corpus Christi.

Yours truly also has something to brag about; my first great - grandchild, Jacqulyn Renee Tolson, was born November 2, 1988 at Corpus Christi.

She is the daughter of James and Sannon Tolson. James is Gary's son and is stationed in San Diego, California in the Navy. He was home for the big event and he also • participated in his Dad's Retirement Ceremony.

Dear Members and Friends: Our Thanksgiving dinner was well attended and everyone was in a happy mood. Everyone enjoyed the delicious meal, and we extend a big thank you to all of you who made it enjoyable, and to all who help with the cleanup.

Games were enjoyed and Alice Morley was the winner of the beautiful quilt donated by Mollie Walker.

Our next meeting Wednesday, December 7th will be held at our regular time, 10:30 a.m. We will have ham donated by the club and all are asked to bring the same as the Thanksgiving dinner, but instead of mashed potatoes, have candied yams and the trimmings, only in smaller quanities.

Our November 3rd meeting was opened with the pledge to the flag and then President Podhrasky asked for a moment of silence for Rudolph Chervenka.

Guests introduced were Bob Zvolanek, John Trojacek, Julius Podhrasky, Frank Noska, Alvin Elsik, Marie Kalkus, Arnold Vrla, Roy Alholm, Gilbert Kalich, Phylis Dolezalik, John and Jitka Hynecek.

Greetings were relayed from Olga Patak, Helen Honza, Hattie Ground, Rose Kopecek, Nita Houzvicka, Alice Roberts, Martha Kocian and Liddie Pavelka.

The secretary and treasurer read their reports.

Correspondence was received from Martha Kocian thanking us for the fruit, acknowledgement from the Bethel Lutheran Church thanking our Circle for the memorial for Frances Baleja, Christmas Seals from the American Lung Association, Salvation Army, and Volunteer Workers Association.

Sister Nesuda had a dinner party honoring her on her 97th birthday.

Anne Zvolanek reported on the Czech Day at the Fair. She thanked those who wore their kroje. She announced that the longest married couple was our member Justine Pokladnik and her husband, Sid. The oldest lady was Bessie Houpy and the oldest gentleman was Joe Nestroj.

Vicki Kohn and Stacie Athas also commented on the Czech Day at the Fair.

We discussed our Christmas Party, once again, and we voted to have stuffed breast of chicken, broccoli, fruit salad, coconut cream cake, rolls, coffee and tea. Everyone was told to notify Vicki Kohn if they plan to attend the party on December 1st.

Adell Vlk, Marie Fitz, Bessie Kalich and Evelyn Trojacek will help with the decorating. Dorothy Reznik will take care of our Christmas carols. We also voted not to exchange gifts but instead bring $1 for the poor. We, once again, wish that Liddie Pavelka mail Christmas greetings to our shut - in sisters.

The organization to which we will contribute, as our charitable project, are American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald Home, Genesis for

Women, American Ladies Auxiliary, and the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital. The monies we collect, at our Christmas Party, will be given to the Brady Center.

Door prizes this month were furnished by Aggie Mach, Helen Vrla, Evelyn Trojacek and Millie Noska.

Table decorations were compliments of Adell Vlk. Hostesses were Evelyn Trojacek, Helen Oates, Bobbie Bickle and Mary Ann Skrabanek. The delicious fried chicken was our treat from our Circle.

Donations this month in memory of Frank Mach were from Jerry and Georgia Stransky, Roy and Lydia Alholm, Agnes Janecka, John and Evelyn Trojacek, Libbie and Alvin Elsik. In memory of Marie Urban and Mary Urban from Lillian Moran and Dorothy Reznik. „News of our members are Lillian and Edmund Kaska celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 19th at St. Pius Catholic Church with a Mass and then reception and dinner.

Adell and Joe Vlk were on a trip through the New England states to see the beautiful fall foliage with their daughter, Laurie. They were pleasantly surprised when their daughter Barbara Lingberg and granddaughter Barbara Jae knocked on their hotel room door at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.

Barbara thought, since they were so close to her home in Virginia, she would pay them a visit.

Vicki and Jerry Kohn's son, Gary, was married in Las Vegas. He and his wife, Shelly, are to be congratulated.

My son, David, was married to Gwendolyn Bordelon on November 12th at Haggard Park in Plano. They honeymooned in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

On Wednesday, November 23rd, Helen Vrla, Stacie Athas, Mildred Chervenka, Kathy Pottkotter, Dorothy Reznik, and our husbands were privileged to perform during half - time at the Dallas Mavericks' Game.

There were five circles of dancers and we danced two polkas. It was very exciting.

Czech At ACC I

Conversational

November 15th marked the last of the Conversational Czech Classes for Fall 1988 at Alvin Community College. The instructor for this course was Mr. Bernard Pivonka.

As is customary, the class concluded with a most enjoyable social. Each member prepared a covered dish or two for the occasion, along with plenty kolache. During the social hour, the class enjoyed beautiful Czech music.

Those persons interested in joining the next class or even to visit should come and see for themselves how enjoyable the association is with these nice Czech friends. One can actually learn what fun it is to improve their knowledge of the Czech language; so there is no reason to be hesitant in joining the class.

Classes are held on a Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will resume February 14, 1989.

We will be looking forward to seeing more interested students for this Czech class which we have enjoyed so much.

CHRISTMAS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA The Christmas season in Czechoslovakia begins on December 6th every year. That is the feast day of Saint Nicholas. On that day the children put their shoes in the window and wait for three visitors to come.

Saint Nicholas, an angel, and a devil visit the children. The angel brings sweets to the children who have been good and the devil would bring sticks to those children who have been bad.

Children all over the world love Saint Nicholas. There really was a Saint Nicholas, who lived a long time ago, about 500 years after Christ. He performed many miracles. He is also called Father Christmas and Father January. And in America we know him as Santa Claus!

Although Christmas Day is not celebrated until December 25th, there is much work to be done before then.

The Czech men would select a goose to fatten up for Christmas dinner. The women would bake cookies and fancy rolls. Chocolate candies are fashioned in many shapes and wrapped to hang on the tree. The boys and girls weave

chains and green and red paper to hang on the tree.

On the night before Christmas Eve, after all the children are asleep, mothers and fathers decorate the tree.

Some of the trees were fresh, and some were handmade and used year after year. All of the trees were decorated with candies and cookies and other sweets. Walnuts were gilded and hung from gold cord. Green and red paper chains were scalloped around the branches, and the tree was lit up with real candles. It is said that Martin Luther was the first person to decorate a Christmas tree, over 400 years ago.

Luther was so entranced with the beauty of a tree one starry night, that he cut down a small one, took it inside, and decorated it with candles, to symbolize the star - filled sky.

At the foot of every tree, Czech families placed a manger scene with the Christ child in his tiny bed of hay.

All of the decorations and celebrations were carried out so that the Christ child could have a happy birthday. ***

Funeral services were held in the Palms Chapel of Roses in Angleton at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8 with Reverend Joe Fort of the Crosby Methodist Church officiating.

Dear Readers, Lodge 13, Dime Box Youth Club held its last monthly meeting on Sunday, November 20th at 3 p.m.

President Scott Whitsel called the meeting to order.

Stacey Spacek was the flagbearer of the month. She led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Trudy Krenek called the roll. There were 17 members present.

The minutes of our last meeting were then read.

Treasurer Jennifer Gold gave the treasurer's report. She reported we made $260 from our youth club dance held on November 4th.

There wasn't any old business.

Under new business, we decided to decorate our SPJST hall. We will do it Sunday, November 27th at 1 p.m. We will then pickup trash for our Adopt A - Highway project, depending upon the weather. We also discussed having a chili - appreciation supper for our parents.

December 2nd, our club will have a bake sale in front of First State Bank in Dime Box. You can take your baked items to LaDonna's Beauty Shop or First State Bank. Each SPJST Youth Club member is asked to bring a baked item.

Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Danbury Lodge No. 139, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister GLADYS MOLLIE LOSTAK, who passed away after an extended illness on Sunday, November 6, 1988 at the age of 69 in a Houston hospital.

Gladys was born at Lynchburg, Texas on July 16, 1919. She was the daughter of Frank and Mollie Franta Kosina, and was married to Tommie Lostak on August 9, 1941. A longtime resident of Danbury, having moved there in 1951, she was well - known for her good works. She gave her full support to all community projects and benefits. A lifelong member of SPJST, Gladys was very supportive of all local and district activities. For three years she owned and operated the Kolache Shop in Danbury.

The Resolution Committee of Jaromir Lodge No. 54, West, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express our condolences to the bereaved family of sister MRS. FRANCES BARTOSH, age 93, of West, who passed away early Wednesday afternoon, November 9, 1988 at West Rest Haven.

A prayer service and rosary were held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Aderhold Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m.

Friday, November 11 at West Brethren Church with Rev. Lawrence Junek and Rev. Angelo Bertini officiating. Burial followed in West Brethren Cemetery.

Sister Bartosh was born January 2, 1895 in Nada, Texas to Phillip and Frances Bilek. She married Eustis Frank Bartosh on February 7, 1917 in Garwood. They then moved to the Penelope area in Hill County before later moving to the West area. Mr. Bartosh preceded his wife in death on July 27, 1954. Mrs. Bartosh was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 54, having joined the SPJST in April, 1913; and a member of the West Brethren Church.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Albin Bartosh who died in 1955 and Jerry Bartosh who died in 1978.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Jimmie (Frances) Tobola of West, Mrs. Joe (Agnes) Prasifka of Cedar Hill, Mrs. Tony (Mary Jane) Chudej of Waco; one stepbrother, Ernest Bartosh of Rowlett; five sisters, Mrs. Louis (Agnes) Kramr of West, Mrs. James (Ann) Sheppard of Dallas, Mrs. Jack (Vera) Truitt of Austin; Mrs. Fred (Emily) Plsek and Mrs. Robert (Billie) Navratil, both of West; 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 11 great - great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Major Vincent Tobola, James Tobola, David Tobola, John Prasifka, Jerry Prasifka, Larry Bartosh, Raymond Bartosh, Tommy Chudej and Tony Chudej. . ,

Wednesday, November 30, 1988—VESTNIK/11 Funeral services for Brother Novosad were held on Monday, November 14th, at 3 p.m., at the Hillier Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce M. Wood of St. Paul's United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the West Brethren Church or to the West Rest Haven Chapel Fund.

Members voted to pay dues on a yearly basis. Several new members joined the local Chapter.

Since the Czech Heritage Society holds meetings in the SPJST Hall, free of charge, members voted to reimburse SPJST Lodge No. 49 for refreshments served.

B.J. Mikeska nominated Elizabeth Walther as chairman of a committee to investigate the possibility to participate in the Fiesta Del Concho next year.

Lula Maracek and Eddie Mae Huebner were appointed as her co-chairmen, This committee is to see about taking part in the Polka Festival on April 14, 15 and 16, 1989 in San Angelo.

President Mikeska appointed Eddie Mae Huebner as a new director. One other is to be appointed.

The next meeting is scheduled for fourth Sunday, February 26, 1989 at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Joan Cervenka Cobb of Midland, Texas was the principal speaker on "How to Find Your Czech Ancestors." She has researched and published a book on the Cervenka and

Machu family trees. The book is informative as well as interesting in that she writes personal anecdotes about them.

Mrs. Cobb gave each person present a copy of the procedure "How to Find Your Czech Ancestors," included are the following: 1. Things you need to do to get started; 2. Pedigree chart; 3. A declaration of intentions to become a U.S. Citizen; 4. Birth, marriage, or death certificate; 5. Application for a genealogical research from Czechoslovakia in the form of a running account; 6. Census history.

Other sources to check: Birth, marriage and death certificates, lodge records, land records and maps.

Dr. Garry Butka of Brownwood, Texas, who is interested in genealogy, was present.

After the meeting, kolache and coffee were served to members and visitors.

Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Sophie and Edmund Dybala of Ganado celebrated their golden (1938 - 1988) wedding anniversary on Saturday, October 29th with a beautiful party given by their six children, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brauner of La Grange, Mr. and Mrs. Dan E. Dybala of Granbury, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Dybala of Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dybala of Missouri City, Mr. and Mrs. David Dybala of Garland and Mr. and Mrs. Tim Dybala of Sugarland; also all their 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The celebration was held at the KJT Hall in Ganado starting at 3 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. and a dance

was also held to highlight the evening with music by The Dutchmasters of Houston.

On Sunday at 10 a.m., the Mass was read for the special intention of the celebrants. Their children carried the offertory to the altar and Father Patrick Fidgeon officiated at the Mass and gave the celebrants a special blessing and a Marriage Certificate signed by Bishop Grahman.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry F. Mares, Sr., of Temple, were honored November 24, 1988 at The Smorgasbord House in Belton on their 50th anniversary.

Hosts for the dinner were the couple's children, Henry F. Mares, Jr. and wife Edna of Hurst, Daniel F. Mares and wife Norma of Beaumont and Edward J. Mares of Temple.

Hosts also were their grandchildren, Dana Mares of College Station, Danny Mares of Beaumont, Emily Mares and Ronnie Altizer of Hurst.

Henry Mares and the former Della Hejl were married November 23, 1938

by the late Rev. F.J. Kostohryz at their home in Temple.

The couple lived and farmed in the Oscar community east of Temple for the past 50 years and now are both retired.

CHOOSE DRIED FRUIT OVER CANDY FOR SWEETS Dried fruit can be a sweet and nutritious alternative to a candy balfor your child's sack lunch or after school snack.

Like candy, dried fruit tastes sweet and has a chewy texture which appeals to children, but it also contains fiber and some vitamins and minerals, advises Dr. Alice Hunt of TAMU Agricultural Extension Service.

Most dried fruits have 3 to 5 grams of fiber per 100 calories, so they can make a real contribution to the 20 to 30 grams of fiber needed each day. A 100 - calorie serving of dried fruit also .provide 3 to 11 percent of the Recommended Daily Allowance for iron.

She adds that some dried fruits, including apricots, peaches and prunes, contain significant amounts of vitamin A. One big advantage of dried fruits over candy is that they contain virtually no fat and do not have artificial colors or flavors.

According to the nutritionist, commercially prepared fruit rolls, wrinkles and bars are conveniently

packaged for lunches but don't measure up nutritionally to dried fruit.

Fruit rolls are high in sugar and starch, and typically contain less than 2 percent of the Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamins or minerals.

They are, however, often fortified with added vitamin C. Fruit rolls don't contain the fiber that is found in fresh or dried fruit either.

Dried fruit and fruit rolls shouldn't replace fresh fruit in the diet of adults or children, the nutritionist advises.

The process of drying causes fruit to lose water content, so it contains more calories and less vitamins, minerals and fiber than an equal amount of fresh fruit. But dried fruit can make a convenient snack and a nutritional contribution to the diet when it's eaten in place of candy and other sweets.

Some dried fruits, especially light colored ones, are treated with sulfites to keep them from browning. The nutritionist suggests that people who are sulfite - sensitive carefully read the package labels to make sure they are getting fruit that does not contain sulfites.
