Temple was the site for the first annual SPJST State Volleyball Tournament. There was a crowd of over 120 participants and onlookers for this event. Eight teams representing five districts competed for the first place trophy. Clinching first place by way of the winner's bracket was Lodge No. 17, New Tabor and second place was captured by neighboring Lodge No. 13, Dime Box. Lodge No. 88, Houston hung tough through the loser's bracket to take third place.

The holiday season is upon us with Thanksgiving being this week and only 31 days before Christmas appears. In some ways, there are things we should be happy about, especially if we are healthy, have a satisfactory future, have financial stability and assurance and other things which bring satisfaction, and, yet, when we give serious thoughts to this complex modern life, we realize that there are situations existing that are not so wonderful in all of life's aspects that we can be exhiliarated about even though they do not pertain to us directly, and, yet, in an indirect way, they do.

If we look at our economy and the rate of inflation, we see that inflation is ever - so - slowly, constantly increasing; that can be said of all the things we buy, especially groceries and wearing apparel we, of course, use every day. As an example, during the drought last summer, a loaf of whole wheat bread went from $1.03 to $1.13 in one increase, and, one week later, it was $1.16 for the same size loaf, and we still hear of inflation rate being 2 percent; by our figures -- 13 cents increase from $1.03 is well over 10 percent. Many other everyday items can be found to be comparatively examined.

This brings our thoughts to our SPJST Society and the life insurance plans we have to offer; they are set and the premiums will remain the same. In fact, the new plans and rates are lower because they have been figured at the lower, more recent insurance tables because we live longer. Our SPJST Society's solvency is such that we can rest assured of continued progress and growth and what better investment can you find when you compare our secure future with the roller coaster ups and downs of the investment field and the topsy - turvy tumbling of the stock market, etc. Why not compare your return on Annuities and Universal Life with SPJST to the interest return you are offered elsewhere and see the difference plus the satisfaction and peace of mind you have with our solvency.

We repeat what we wrote some time ago -- Give an SPJST Life Insurance Certificate as a Christmas gift -- a lasting gift that will remain so as long as the insured lives! That is what you can call "A Living Lifelong Gift."

Speaking of economy a site in Ellis County, Texas approximately 50 miles north of West, has been selected as the "preferred" site for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). This should help the Texas economy in the future and be a help to our technically - inclined students in the field of technology, physics, electronics, chemistry, etc. Texas Congressman Marvin Leath (our SPJST member) writes: "In my opinion, the SSC will be one of the most important scientific projects in this century. Besides helping the Texas economy, this facility will be extremely beneficial to the nation as a whole. Hopefully, we will see much advancement in medicine, communications, and defense from this project."

In Texas, there was broad bipartisan support for the SSC. "Both Republican and Democratic officials in Washington and Texas worked very hard to see that Texas received the SSC," Congressman Leath said.

"Texas was very fortunate to have the talents of Speaker of the House Jim Wright, Senators Lloyd Bentsen and Phil Gramm, the entire Texas Congressional Delegation, Governor Bill Clements and many state officials who worked tirelessly on behalf of our state for this important project."

"The economic benefits of this project could not have come at a better time for the Texas economy.

Be sure to use the coupon attached. *** The kind of virus that devastated computer systems hooked up to a Defense Department network early this month, when the technical monkeying of a university graduate student went awry, rarely infects personal computers. But it can.

Viruses are computer code hidden in software that replicates by attaching to other programs in a computer's memory. From there, the viruses issue commands that could wipe out all your data. They can sneak into PCs on borrowed discs and on programs received over the phone from electronic bulletin boards o'mainframes. PC users can best avoid viruses by steering clear of borrowed programs. Anyone who must borrow programs should load them onto a floppy disc, or a hard disc where the virus can do the most damage. A PC linked to other computers should be turned off when idle so infected programs cannot be sent to your computer, and making backup copies of all files is wise. Programs called "vaccines" can spot many viruses before they strike. One popular vaccine for IBM PC's and clones is Flv Shot Plus ($10). *** Holiday pickings already are slim for certain. compact - disc players, color TVs and videocassette recorders.

Manufacturers misread the market earlier this year and cut back production. Record sales this fall depleted supplies, and a dearth of computer chips, picture tubes and other components made matters worse. Inventories of color TVs and VCRs are the lowest, down 11 and 29 percent, respectively, from last year.

Shoppers may have to compromise on brand, model and price.

The United States Post Office Department regulations state that sending information pertaining to "Games of Chance" in the mail is prohibited, so therefore you probably have noticed that we have limited the use of "raffle, bingo, etc." in the Vestnik; there are other words to describe your entertainment announcements and we have been using them. 9, Snook Combines Annual Meeting With Yuletide Lodge

The SPJST Lodge No. 9, in Snook, has planned its annual business meeting with Yuletide festivities on Sunday, December 11, 1988 at the SPJST Hall in Snook. Everyone is cordially invited for an evening of fraternal fellowship, food and fun.

Dear Members: President Leslie Sakewitz opened the Lodge 15 regular meeting by leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. He welcomed our guests, Thomas Harwell, Dan Balusek, Frank Janicek and Evelyn Pfannsteil. It was good to have you all; please come again.

Secretary June Harwell, Treasurer Pat Hillman and Financial Secretary Sidonia Svoboda gave reports and all were accepted as read. All officers were present. The committees' reports were also accepted as read.

As was reported in the last letter, we had the election of new officers for 1989. Those elected are President -- Jo Lee Shiller, Vice President -- Louise Sakewitz, Treasurer -- Pat Hillman, Financial Secretary -- Sidonia

Svoboda, and Secretary June Harwell.

The bar chairman is Leslie Sakewitz and Entertainment Committee chairman is Ann Balusek. The Kitchen Committee will be the whole club, so we will need volunteers to help in the kitchen when we will have a function.

The next meeting will be December 14, which will be a Christmas Party beginning at 7 p.m. Please bring party food and any kind of games to be played. As your new president for 1989, I want to invite all of our members to come out and bring a guest and have a night of fun. That's what SPJST is all about, to get together and help each other and have fun doing it.

Hello to J.L. and Iris. We sure did enjoy ourselves and hope Joe and Olga are all well.

The Christmas Social will be held on Friday, December 2, 1988 at the Victoria Community Center Annex.

An evening meal will be served at 7 p.m. The lodge will provide meat, bread, and drinks and each family is asked to bring a side dish and a dessert.

This year we will have music for your dancing and listening pleasure. It is sure to be a fun evening for all so get your family together and come out to kick off the holiday season.

Our November 13th meeting was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz. The pledge to the flag was led by Jana Breitkreutz.

Our guests were acknowledged, they were Dwayne and Adolph Pavelka, who also counted votes. We thank them both, and hope they come visit us, again.

Secretary Rosemarie Banik read the minutes which were approved; she also gave the treasurer's report. She then read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar concerning the Fraternal Activities Coordinator.

Youth Leader Louise Burney reported they had 12 members, 3 guests and 4 adults at their meeting.

Wednesday, November 23, 1988—VESTNIK/5 She stated that they drew names for Christmas and there will be a Tree Trimming Party on December 3rd. A Christmas scene and a Texas T - Shirt will be awarded at the Christmas meeting.

Those having birthdays in November were Louise Burney, Florence Frazier, Edna Tepe and Christopher Pavelka; the birthday song was sung by all and little Christopher blew out the birthday cake candles.

No. 47, Seaton Annual Meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The annual meeting of Lodge No. 47 was held on Sunday, November 6, 1988 at 1 p.m., with President Jerry Pechal calling same to order.

Flag Bearers Erin Skrabanek and Lori Greger brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. We held a moment of silence in memory of Brother Woodrow Chervenka who passed away in October. May the departed brother rest in eternal peace and honor to his memory forever. Deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

President Pechal welcomed everyone to the meeting and recognized the visitors, Ann Balusek.

Freddie Schroeder and Jeffrey Hermsen. Thanks for coming and we hope to see you again at the next meeting.

Sister Dolores Skrabanek, secretary, read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives and the minutes of the October 2nd meeting.

Correspondence was a thank you card from Joe Marinik for a get well card

sent to him and also a thank you from the Woodrow Chervenka family for the floral wreath sent to the funeral service of Brother Woodrow.

New members accepted were Travis Henry Zavodny, Vickie Ree Short, Russell L. Mezynski, Apolonia M. Benavides, Marvin Meyer and Carmen Sosa. A warm welcome to each named and hope you come to our meetings and other activities soon.

On the sick list were Sister Linda Vasek and Brothers Ernest Pfeiffer and Alfred Klusacek, who is hospitalized in the Waco V.A. Center.

Here's hoping everyone is improving daily.

The officers' reports were all good.

The president reported on the repairs of the septic lines and to the electrical short in the junction box. He thanked all who helped control the fire before the fire trunk arrived. We were certainly lucky to put it out and appreciate cooperation of our patrons to leave the hall quietly and in an orderly manner. Of course, we had told them we had a problem and didn't state we had a fire.

Tuba Dan and the Polkalanders of Wisconsin will perform at our hall on June 10, 1989 and they will be accompanied by three busloads of people traveling with the band.

The Audit Committee Chairman Frank Klinkovsky gave the third quarterly report. The chairpersons' reports were all good. We were fortunate to have SL Financial Secretary Brother Jerry Mikulas at the meeting who spoke to us about the licensing of sales representatives possibly. Brother Willie E. Kohutek explained the incentive program for next year and Brother Frank Klinkovsky reported on the volleyball tournament held the day before. Our team didn't win.

Board minutes were read and the youth leader's report followed.

Then we proceeded to balloting for the officers of 1989. Balloting Committee selected were Dana Glaser, Georgia Sodek, Irma Klinkovsky, Rose Marie Orsag, Della Mares and Ruth Janacek. Handing out the ballots and picking them up were John Hruska, Harry Gersbach, Jerome Orsag and Elmer Skrabanek.

Officers elected are President -Jerry Pechal, 1st Vice President George Pavelka, 2nd Vice President/F.A.C. -- Tim Reese, Secretary -- Dolores Skrabanek, Financial Secretary -- Adeline Kohutek, Treasurer -- Lucy Mihatsch, Parliamentarian -- Dan Balusek, Czech Reporter -- Della Mares, English Reporter -- Dorothy Pechal, Youth Leader -- Patsy Koslovsky and Auditor for three years -- Frank Klinkovsky.

Board of Trustees elected are Woodrow Marek, Dan Balusek, Frank Klinkovsky, Jerome Orsag, Calvin Skrabanek, Elmer Skrabanek and Wallace Jez. Congratulations to all and best wishes to a successful year.

The chairpersons elected will be elected at the next meeting on Sunday, December 4 at 2 p.m.

Birthdays will be celebrated in November by Jerry Pechal, Judy Pechal, Edward Mihatsch, Rose Marie Orsag, Leroy Hanusch, Tim Reese and Margaret Gibson. Wedding anniversaries will be observed by Henry and Della Mares (50th, 23rd); Henry and Helen Janacek (40th, 23rd); Charlie and Judy Sirney (55th, 27th); Anton and Julie Vitek (52nd); Floyd and Emily Stuteville (18th); Ernest and Christine Junek (54th); and Emil Hejl and the late Frances Hejl would have been married 54 years on the 24th.

May you all enjoy many more years of happiness.

The Leroy Rybak's Swinging Orchestra of Hallettsville will play their best in polka, waltz and country music. We're hoping everyone is making plans for this special dance on Sunday, November 27th from 3 to 7 p.m. See you then.

The Christmas Party of Lodge 47 will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 11th with the youth program and Santa Claus, then the adult awards program, refreshments, also turkey and dressing supper.

Everyone is asked to bring salads and sweets. If you would like to help with the preparation, contact Willie E. or Adeline Kohutek.

We started selling New Year's Eve reservations at the dance on the 12th.

We are going to sell them at the Saturday night dances or you may call for reservations (817) 985 - 2545 or weekdays; advance tickets will be $7.50 per person and $8.50 at the door, the night of the dance. Jerry Haisler and the Melody Five will be playing for this last dance of 1988. If you are planning on attending this gala affair, you need reservations well in advance for choice tables and chairs.

We have received some good rain tonight, but could use a whole lot more.

Dear Members: On Sunday, November 13 at 12 noon, our lodge members enjoyed a delicious dinner of roast baked by Benita Walzel. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Walzel donated sausage to the meal.

We thank you and all the good sisters for the various covered dishes of vegetables and pastry they brought.

What a feast we had!

At 1 p.m. our President Charlie Matcek called the meeting to order.

Benita Walzel led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

We stood for a few moments of silence in memory of our departed member Minnie Orsak. May she rest in peace.

All officers answered the roll call.

Mary Werner read the minutes. In correspondence, she read a thank you note from Rosie Schwettman for the memorial to our departed member August Schwettman, also other correspondence of concern business.

She also gave the financial report.

Willie Mae Kuykendall gave the treasurer's report.

Gilbert Walzel gave the Special Fund report.

Lydia Sabrsula was reported to have spent some time in the hospital and is now well on the way to recovery. Best of health to you now, Lydia.

Viola Kutej and Miranda Wiels were accepted as new members; we welcome you.

For Christmas dinner on December 11, turkey and dressing and ham will be furnished by the lodge. Ladies, please bring pastry and vegetables.

Later after the meeting, we expect Santa Claus with a Christmas tree and

bags of goodies for all the good boys and girls.

Apples and oranges are to be given to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II in Needville at Christmastime.

Sunday, we re - elected President Charlie Matcek as our president. He will serve his 33rd year president of Lodge No. 81. He has also served as District V vice president for 2 years and president for 2 years, has attended every local meeting, every District V meeting and attended as delegate at every convention.

In 1955 he served on a committee to enlarge and remodel Lodge No. 81 hall. In 1974, due to large increase in membership, as president he was instrumental in getting our present lodge hall built and so we give credit where credit is due. We honored you as "Fraternalist" for unselfish service in our, lodge with love and admiration as ou, very dedicated and faithful president. Congratulations and best wishes!

Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is getting to the year's end and it is always the most active time at our lodge as well as other lodges; time for election of officers and Christmas parties and programs which are always put on by the youth club. This year our lodge will have the Christmas program second Sunday, December 11 which would be our regular meeting day. There will be no regular meeting in December.

December 4, 1988 is the date of the 11, Metroplex Four - Lodge Christmas Member-, t. )dge 88 in attenda,Te,2 Party which is always very interesting and a good time to meet members from these lodges. A good dinner is always planned and a dance after a nice social evening. This time Lodge No. 154, which is the Sokol Athletic Center located on Boat Club Road, will be the host lodge. Each lodge wants all members to attend and have a good time, so all members of Lodges 92, 154, 180 and 183 be sure to come and have a nice Christmas with your brothers and sisters; the date is December 4, 1988 and there will be a full day of activities.

Lodge No. 92 did have election of officers for 1989 and they will be installed at the December 4th Party with all the new elected officers from Lodge 88 Member participants at Czech Day, L to R: Irene si(o. acek, Louis these four lodges.

All of the officers and committees put their hearts into the lodge work and it makes our,lodge something to be proud of. About the remodeling of our lodge, the accordion doors that separate the kitchen from the dance floor are now installed and they are real nice; this will help keep noise in the kitchen and not interfere when there is a meeting going on in the hall.

all paid for with the money the lodge saved in past years.

Our lodge does donate money to several organizations that help in caring for others who are less fortunate. These are Goodfellows -$100, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. I — $100, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. II -$100, Youth Club -- $300, Child Abuse in Tarrant County -- $100, SPJST Scholarship Fund -- $100, Czech Chair (Czech Educational Foundation of Texas) -- $500, and Tarrant County Food Bank -- $100. Lodge No. 92 is proud to help all these organizations and the money is always for a good cause.

Birthday cards were sent to members who are over 65 and for the month of November there were 19 cards sent.

Memorial donations were accepted for Dan Kubala, Charles Ramsel and Margaret Kratky; these names were added to our Memorial Board located on the left of our lodge's stage. This is a nice board and it has names of all deceased whom memorials were made for. Sister Margaret Kratky passed away October 23, 1988; she was the wife of Bernie Kratky.

Lodge No. 92 extends to all in the rest homes and home - bound good health and happiness. We love all of you and you are remembered always.

The committee has selected the Fraternalist for 1988 and it is our Vice President John Paprskar. He has been a member since he was a baby and his parents, Mike and Helen Paprskar, did keep him, with the rest of the brothers and sisters, active in the lodge. John has and continues to do things that are a great help to our lodge. His two children are also very active in the youth club and have won many awards. We regret that Sister Joy Paprskar, his wife, was unable to be at the meeting to see the award issued to him. She is not too well, so we wish her a speedy recovery. We are proud to have John as the Fraternalist of our lodge. I do know he is happy to receive this honor because last year I had the honor to be the first to receive it and that is something I will cherish.

We congratulate Sister Esta Belle Hubenak who was presented her 50 year pin.

Our lodge wants to thank all the members who have always prepared meals after our meetings; there was plenty of food and good eating. Also, thanks and appreciation to the ladies who bring pastries that are so delicious. Our lodge pays for all the food and drinks that are served after our meetings. The ones who are in charge of the meal for that meeting are also paid.

I want to thank our Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for all the pictures he took at our 50th anniversary celebration so we could have some in the Vestnik; also many thanks to Sister Maxine Sefcik for the other pictures she took and put them in the Vestnik. This will be a nice remembrance for our lodge.

Don't forget to bring your children and grandchildren to the December 11, 1988 Christmas program beginning at 5 p.m. Gordon Hubenak will want all children there to get ready for the program and also to sing and bring in Santa Claus. Santa always gives out gifts that are under the tree (the ones you bring for the children). Santa Claus also gives out bags of goodies that the lodge furnishes. Be sure to come and bring the youngsters for lots of fun.

There will be a New Year's Eve dance at the lodge and it is from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with music by Charlie Patterson. This is a ballroom

Dear Members and Friends: Our meeting Sunday was called to order by President Jerry Milan. He had our new member, Brother Lee Griffin, lead us to the Pledge of Allegiance. Welcome, Lee! Brother Milan welcomed our guests Beth Clark, Al and June Jirik. The Jirik's son, Jeremy, is a member of our lodge and youth club.

The secretary's minutes and the treasurer's report were approved as read.

Sister Pavey reported on the cards sent.

Our Youth Leader Sister Carolyn Cleveland extended her thanks to Brother Bob Cleveland and Al Jirik for doing a good job with the cake walk during Halloween and she thanked everyone for their help and to make it such a success. She announced the Lodge 154 and Sokol's Christmas Party that will be Thursday, December 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. Parents are asked to just bring one gift for Santa to give out. Fruit and candy bags will also be given. There will be a short program.

As usual, sisters are asked to bring goodies for the social following.

District III Youth Counselor Bessie Petr has invited the youth club to Holiday in the Park on Friday, December 16th. Then they will have an overnight stay at Lodge 84. They had a bad rain last year, so let's hope for nice weather this year.

Brother Milan showed off the beautiful trophy won by Lodge 154's Volleyball Team. They didn't do as well at the State Meet in Temple, came in fourth place and there were eight teams. He said everyone enjoyed the fellowship. At the next District III meeting that will be hosted by Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood on Sunday, April 16, there will be a horseshoe tournament and quilting. So you have time to get busy.

I can't believe it's time for the Metroplex Christmas Party hosted by our lodge Sunday, December 4th. We had quite a discussion on a roast dinner with all the trimmings to be served from 12 noon until 2:30 p.m.

We are asking if the sisters of the other lodges would bring a pastry. The dinner is for members; non - members -- adult dinner and dance is $5, children 12 and under, $3. They usually have installation of officers and.probably a short program between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. when the Czech Harvesters will play for your dancing pleasure from 3 to 7 p.m. We will be looking forward to seeing you.

Sister Steinman, our photographer, had a lot of photos of the Czech Day at the Fair, the Octobei fest and the District III meeting display; everyone enjoys them.

We extend our congratulations to Brother Tal Milan who is now one of our sales representatives. Good luck, Tal! We also extend our congratulations to Brother Jerry Milan who was installed as the first Life Member of Texas High School Coaches Association at a Convention in Austin, Texas.

News

Well, this year's Gulf Coast Czech Festival is history and I want to report that it turned out real nice. The main reason it was a success was due to the dedicated members of Lodge No. 172 and the great assistance of the Harris County Czech Heritage Society and the San Jacinto Czech Club. These

three Czech organizations worked hand - in - hand to please the large number of people in attendance during Saturday night and Sunday.

I want to also compliment the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge, mainly, Bernie Gebala, Andrew Vavra, Sid Pokladnik, Jerry Prochazka, Matt Vanek and Thelma Hrncir for attending and, believe me, these officers are good examples of fraternalists. As busy business persons taking time to travel long distances, made members of Pasadena Lodge No. 172 appreciate them. Thank you all for coming to our festival and we hope to see you all next year or maybe at some other SPJST function.

The Christmas lodge social has been set for Saturday, December 17, starting with a "Happy Hour" between 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., and then a buffet covered dish dinner at 8 p.m.

This event will be held in our social room and, at 9 p.m., the dance will start, with music by the Original River Road Boys. Details in later issues of the Vestnik.

Ticket sales for the New Year's Eve dance are 50 percent complete and, if you still want good seating, please purchase your tickets soon. We will not hold reservations this year, so when you purchase your tickets, you make your reservations. Music by the Texas Brew, black - eyed peas, sausage and cornbread at midnight and party favors when you enter the ballroom; dancing from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m.

Our Nominating Committee is busy obtaining potential officers for 1989.

We need help in the bar and kitchen, so please do your share and assist our lodge. If we have several couples to work this, it will make it better for those who are carrying the load now Look for pictures in future issues of the Vestnik, of our Gulf Coat Czech Festival, especially the winners of our Polka Dance Contest. Thanks to Sister Lillian Young, this event was a huge success and drew many contestants and was one of the most enjoyable events of the festival.

Members of Lodge No. 172, don't forget our monthly meeting to be held on November 30, 1988, due to Thanksgiving Eve on our regular date, please attend.

The December meeting will be held on December 28th.

Lodge

SPJST Academy Lodge No. 177 November meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Louis Driska.

The pledges was recited and roll call of officers showed all were present.

Ray Ybarra is on the sick list; the lodge wishes him a speedy recovery and we missed you at the meeting, Ray. Recording Secretary Sharon Hutka read the minutes from our last meeting and they were approved as read.

The Academy PTO thanked our lodge for the ceiling fan they donated.

One new member, Charles Vansa, has been to a few meetings and is a welcome addition to the workers for our lodge.

Get well card was sent to George Kennedy and Mr. and Mrs. George Kennedy are also missed from our meetings.

Youth Leader Sheryl Wiest reported the youth club and volunteers mowed the side lot and had a good turnout for the bake sale.

Trustee reported that Alex Garcia was absent, discussed putting lights around the building and New Year's Eve tickets go on sale December 1st.

After much discussion, the lodge decided not to have a Christmas Party as before, it was decided to have a covered dish supper after the December meeting; the lodge will furnish meat and bread and members who attend the meeting will bring a covered dish or sweets. Some members felt it was a waste to have a lodge party and so few show up, it seems you cannot even give away anything and have a good turnout. It was further decided that all the members are to bring canned goods and a needy family around the Academy School District be designated to receive what our members bring. A committee was appointed, those being are Libbie Bartek, Jan Vansa and Jackie Beck.

The lodge will be decorated Monday, November 28th at 7 p.m. All members who wished to help signed up and quite a few hearty souls signed up and a fried chicken supper will be served after the hall is decorated.

Bill Hutka, Jan Vansa and Phil Wedoch were appointed to the ballot counting and with no further business, the officers were nominated and elected. Those being President -- Bill Hutka, Vice President -- Louis Driska, Treasurer -- Josie Tomastik by acclamation, Recording Secretary -Sharon Hutka by acclamation, Youth Leader -- Sheryl Wiest.

Board of Trustees are Otis Beck, Helen Bland, Harvey LaFlamme, Josie Tomastik and Mary Ann Summers.

We hope these trustees will make a point to be on time to the trustees' meetings and attend every meeting; nothing can be decided fairly if you come one month and miss the next month. Remember you were elected to run this lodge and a lot of decisions rest on the trustees and, since we don't have a hall manager, a lot of that work and repair rests on the president and vice president checking on the lodge every day to be sure things are in good repair; take pride in your lodge and help wherever you can.

Dear Members: I was honored at the last meeting because the membership chose me as the Fraternalist of the Year 1988. I wish to thank all of you members and say that this is a great honor and hope that Lodge 183 will benefit from the work that I have done. SPJST has meant a lot to me since I became a member some 30 years ago. The joy of fraternalism and watching things happen the first few years were great times for me and a great experience.

When Lodge 183 was forming I became a charter member and started to help things happen. There have been some good things and some bad things happen at the lodge, but it has been a

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 23, 1988 rewarding time for me to be able to help things happen, and with a lot of hard - working members, many things happened in the last few years. You get to meet a lot of new people and new members you enjoy being around and get to know them as if they were your family. All of this makes the bad things in your own life fade away.

Whenever you are doing something for someone else, you don't have time to think of yourself or your own troubles.

SPJST has been around for a long time and I hope that my effort will serve as an example for younger members who may take my place in later years. It has indeed been an honor to have been the second person from Lodge 183 chosen for this honor.

It is quite a task to follow Inez Greenlees, but looking around you can see others who are also working hard and keeping the fraternal spirit alive.

Next year is your year; just ask yourself what can you do to become the Fraternalist of the Year in 1989.

Don't be one of those asking, "What Happened?"

Officers for 1989 were elected at our last meeting and also members were appointed to do several other jobs.

The lodge is planning a special free "That's Right" FREE Christmas Party for all Lodge 183 members on Friday, December 9th. Just bring a covered dish and eat at the lodge beginning about 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for dinner and socializing among members and a dance to start at 8:30 p.m. open to the public with music by "Silverado" (country/western/rock).

The membership has worked hard all year and feel that they need some enjoyment for all that work. It is also a good time for some of you who have never been to one of the socials to come and meet the rest of members.

There are always some asking what the lod e is doing for me, this is a good time to find out. The officers and Entertainment Committee have been trying to please as many members as possible in order to establish a better relationship with all members; hoping to see you at the party.

It is sometimes amusing to hear youngsters express themselves while they are growing up as this little boy said to his teacher: "I ain't got no pencil." The teacher corrected him:

'It's I don't have a pencil.' You don't have a pencil.' We don't have any pencils.' They don't have any pencils.' Is that clear? The child seemed bewildered. "No, what happened to all them pencils?"

Oh yes! I almost forgot Inez Greenlees is having a birthday in November and the members sang "Happy Birthday" to her; that also goes for any other member who has a birthday in November and who we didn't know about.

County Czech Heritage Society News Harris

The Harris County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas concluded its 1988 activities with a very successful meeting which also marked the start of the second annual Gulf Coast Czech Festival held in Pasadena, Texas on November 5th and 6th. After a brief business meeting, Jerri Gruber, Tim Kostom, Joe Smesny and Henry Curbello gave interesting talks on their trips to .Czechoslovakia this past summer. A total of 40 members and 37 visitors attended the meeting.

The Gulf Coast Czech Festival was co - sponsored by SPJST Lodge Rozkvet No. 172, the San Jacinto Czech Club and the Harris County Chapter. On Sunday, November 6, the chapter had a display room where many of the members displayed their memorabilia and shared or exchanged information on Czech heritage and culture. The SPJST Mini - Museum was also displayed by curator Thelma Bartosh in another room. Both display rooms were well attended by visitors all day long. The presence of the Mini - Museum added greatly to the heritage portion of the festival.

The Harris County Chapter was in charge of the Gulf Coast Championship Polka/Waltz Contest held during the Saturday night polka dance at Lodge No. 172 on November 5th. The contest proved to be the highlight of the evening. Trophies were awarded to John and Josephine Wavrusa of Garland -- 1st place, Norbert and Pauline Blazek of Dallas -- 2nd place, and Jerri Gruber and Ed Krpec of Houston -- 3rd place. (The Wavrusas and Blazeks are members of the Texas Czech Folk Singers and journeyed all the way from Dallas to be at the festival.) The judges, Tim and Rosalee Kostom, Harry and Betty Czarnak, and John and Margaret Zalesek, had quite a difficult time in picking the winners out of the 42 participating couples. Everyone had a good time.

The Harris County Chapter now has 117 members and looks forward to growing larger in 1989. Several new

members were signed up during the festival getting the 1989 membership drive off to a good start. The chapter plans to start a "Traditional Czech Dance" grou t. ,n 1989.

Daniel Hrna is busy trying to get a bill into the state legislature which will insure that no cemetery can be willfully or commercially desecrated.

Cemeteries are a great source of informatidn for tracing genealogy.

Tribute To A Great Artist, Band Leader Dick Wickman

All are very saddened to learn of the recent death of one of America's great band leaders.

Mr. Dick Wickman was leader of the Guy Lombardo Orchestra and had played many engagements at the Chandelier Ballroom at SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston.

His style of music was known and loved by many all across America and his tours of Europe also earned him fame in the big band music world.

He conducted music for many years and his contribution to society made so many people happy, and it had a tendency to make each and everyone forgetful of the many trials and tribulations of the current mixed up, topsy - turvy environment in which we live.

Dick will be missed by so many from all walks of life.

He was truly a professional and above all was a perfect gentleman.

To Lisa, his charming and adorable wife, we extend our deepest sympathy to you in these, your most trying and difficult times.

Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood Dear Members and Friends: The youth club meeting was held November 13 with a fair attendance.

A few of the members attended District III meeting at Lodge No. 25, Ennis. The meeting was well attended, the food was good and members of Lodge No. 25 were very nice.

On October 28, the youth club had their Halloween Party, played games and had refreshments. They had a real good time. Thanks for all the goodies that all of you brought.

Lodge 6 youth are working on gifts for the rest home, they also donated canned goods to Caritas, to St. Paul's Bazaar (cakes and items), paper to Metallic Age Group and cakes and items for games to Leroy - Gerald Tours Fire Department.

On December 2, we will decorate Lodge 6 hall and practice for our Christmas Party. I would like all of you to come and practice at 7:30 p.m. because we need everyone in the program.

The youngsters also drew names for Lodge 6 Christmas Party. Remember, the Christmas Party will be December 4, with election of officers and meeting, plus youth club meeting; then supper, youth club program, Santa Claus and exchange of gifts; bring a covered dish to go with turkey and dressing or pastry.

Lodge 6 youth will also sell tickets on some items for their Christmas project.

The youth of SPJST Lodge 6 will have their program for the RVOS Lodge No. 46 Christmas Party which will be held December 10th.

District III youth will have Christmas at Six Flags from 6 to 10 p.m., then go to Lodge 84 for a "Lock - in " on December 16, so let's plan on going because it will be lots of fun.

Lodge 6 youth are selling knives, cards and cookbooks which will make good Christmas gifts.

Birthday celebrants in November are Marvin Mynar, Jr., Mechelle Mach, Christi Mach, Susan Hrabal and Samantha Hrabal and Bradley Kroll.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On October 30, 1988, we held our District VI social in Victoria with Lodge No. 32 hosting.

Marcy Dorotik, State SPJST Queen, presented her District VI and State winning speech along with a few words on her travels thus far as SPJST State Queen. We, from Lodge No. 30, are proud of you, Marcy, keep up the good work!

Lodges participating on the entertainment program were Taiton and El Campo - Hillje. Taiton entertainment included LaBamba and City Lights who performed their first place state acts. Jeanine Dorotik and Valerie Roye did their State Individual Talent tap dances; also Lenice Kaspar and Jeanine Dorotik did a duet tap dance. Then all of Taiton sang two songs, "If You're Happy and You Know It" and "The SPJST Song."

Winners of the District VI Ornament Contest from Lodge No. 30 Taiton were: (6 - 9) first -- Curtis Dorotik, second -- Sarah Dluhos, third -- Michael Kaspar.

In 10 - 12 first -- Craig Dorotik, second -- Valerie Roye.

In 13 - 14 second -- Stephanie Roye In 15 - 17 second -- Marcy Dorotik Then later in the afternoon, we enjoyed playing Wheel of Fortune with the youth in charge of it.

88 Youth Club Meeting

Dear Brothers and Sisters, On Wednesday, November 2, 1988, the meeting of Lodge No. 88 Youth Club was called to order by President Darlene Migl at 7:30 p.m.

Our meeting began with the membership reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. Following the pledge, we remained standing for a moment of silence for the peace and good of our members.

President Darlene Migl then asked for the roll call of officers. Officers Darlene Migl, Michelle Linney, Marlene Migl, Crystal Wallace were present, while Kevin Faske and Paul Groendes were absent. Next on the agenda was the reading of the register

by Secretary Michelle Linney. Michelle then read the minutes to our October meeting. There were no corrections or additions.

This month, we had one letter of correspondence. It was from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and State Youth Director Claudette Reese, telling us of our Honorable Mention winning Scrapbook and Poster.

Treasurer Marlene Migl next gave her treasurer's report. She told us that in September, our youth club made $90.57 at our bake sales and $140.45 in October. She also discussed with our members that there are still a few members who need to pay their dues.

Those members need to bring their $3 to either our next activity or our December meeting.

We had one new member this month; his name is Michael Williams.

He goes to Sinclair Elementary and is nine years old. Welcome, Michael.

President Marlene Migl then asked for the committee chairmen's reports.

All committee chairmen were absent at this meeting, except for the Fund Raising Committee chairman. She told us about our garage sale coming up later in the month. More information later in this letter.

There was no old business, but for new business, we discussed the District V Garage Sale. It will be on Saturday, November 19, 1988. We will begin setting up for this activity at approximately 8 a.m. and youth and their parents are asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. The youth club needs all of your old clothes, toys, books, furniture and anything else you wish to donate. All money made from this project will be going to the District V "San Antonio Express Trip" in the summer of 1989.

Help send a kid to San Antonio! We also discussed our Christmas program.

Members were told to sign up for the part they wished to have and tryouts were to be held the next day.

Rehearsals will be as soon as possible.

Our actresses/actors will be notified.

This year, we will be going Christmas caroling at a local nursing home. We will also be collecting Christmas gift items, such as small combs, toothbrushes, soap, etc. to give to the men and women in nursing homes. The items collected will be delivered on Saturday, December 10th.

All youth are asked to bring these items, preferably by our next meeting which will be on December 7, 1988.

We also discussed next year's camp.

We will be going with District VII. Their DYC is Maxine Pavliska. We are all looking forward to next summer.

Don't forget about the District V Youth Club selling food items (hot dogs, chili dogs, frito - pies, and more!) in the kitchen of Lodge 88, Houston every Thursday night beginning at 7 p.m. We are still collecting those aluminum cans!

Thanks to all of the hard - working youth who go out in the ballroom during games every Thursday night to collect the cans. They include Michelle Linney, Marlene Migl, Darlene Migl, Angela Clayton, Crystal Wallace and Cindy Groendes. All youth from lodges in District V are welcome to attend.

Next was the youth leader's report.

Mrs. Linney discussed our youth club bake sales and the District V bake sales. On the first and fourth Thursdays, District V Youth Club will be working and money made from these nights will go toward the fund for the San Antonio Express Trip. On the second and third Thursdays, Lodge 88 will be working. In conclusion, there will be a bake sale every Thursday evening, along with youth selling the food items in the kitchen.

Both the bake sale and the food sale will be located in the kitchen.

DYC Marie Stayton then gave her report. Speaking as a member of

Lodge 88, she asked that all parents and all 16 - year - olds attend the adult monthly meeting on November 14th.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.

We then recited the SPJST Youth Club Pledge and sang the SPJST Fraternity Song. Birthday celebrants were announced and we then sang "Happy Birthday" to the members.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 17, Novy Tabor, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother DONALD RAY HAVEL, who passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 1988 in the Burleson County Hospital.

Brother. Havel was born on September 20, 1955 in Pasadena,

Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Havel, Jr. He had lived in Burleson County most of his life. He was a 1974 graduate of Caldwell High School. He was a carpenter and worked in construction.

He attended the Caldwell Brethren Church and was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association. Brother Havel had attaind the age of 33.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna (Vickie) Havel of Caldwell; two brothers, Anthony and Fred Havel, both of Caldwell; two sisters, Ramona Arnold of Walls, Mississippi and Anna Wotipka of Caldwell; his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Havel of Caldwell; one nephew and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Havel, Jr. Funeral services were held on Friday, October 7 in the Phillips and Luckey Chapel with the Rev. Daniel J. Marek, pastor of the Caldwell Brethren Church officiating.

Interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Dennis Phelps, James Chaloupka, Leroy Zavodny, Jr., Raymond Macik, Joe Lee Mack and Ricky Billig.

May our departed lodge brother rest in eternal peace and may his memory live among us forever.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge No. 84, Dallas, Texas, wish to express our sympathy to the family of our departed brother EZIDOR KLECKA, who passed away October 20, 1988 at Westminster Manor in Austin, Texas.

Brother Klecka was born April 4, 1899 in Yorktown, Texas. His parents were Frank and Frantiska (Pish) Klecka. He was a member of the Dallas Brethren Church. He was married to Marie Laza. She preceded him in death in 1973.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 25 in Ennis and later Lodge 84 in Dallas.

Brother Klecka was employed at Burr Lumber in Ennis, Texas for many years, moving to Dallas in 1943 to work for the Guiberson Corporation (Dresser Industries). He also worked at Ennis Business Forms and American Thread.

For twenty - two years Brother Klecka played the bath tuba with the Eric Honza, Gus Herzan and Frank Kubin Orchestras, traveling to many lodge halls, and for years on Sundays on the radio at KAND in Corsicana, Texas.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 23, at Keever's Funeral Home, with Dr. Larry Hill officiating.

Interment followed in Myrtle Cemetery, Ennis, Texas.

Survivors include two sons, Miro Klecka of Houston and Joe Klecka of Dallas; a daughter, Frances Moore of San Antonio, four grandchildren and four great - grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge Jaromir No. 54, West, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our condolences to the bereaved family of brother O.B. WALLS, of West, who died November 7, 1988 in a local nursing home at the age of 78.

Prayer services were held at 7 p.m.

Tuesday in Kotch Funeral Chapel, West. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at West Brethren Church in West, with Rev. Henry Beseda and Rev. Lawrence Junek officiating. Interment was in West Brethren Cemetery near West.

Brother Walls was born 22 January 1910 in Aquilla. He lived in Lueders from 1921 until 1928 and moved to West that same year.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was a disabled veteran since 1948. He was a member of West Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge No. 54 since January, 1934. He was a lifelong member of Disabled American Veterans.

Brother Walls was married to Otillie Grossman, October 7, 1933 in West.

Survivors include his widow, Otillie Walls of West; a granddaughter, Veronica Covey of Waco; a brother, A.C. Walls of Waco; and two sisters, Inez Holmes of Bellmead and Jessie Mae Odle of West.

Pallbearers included George Jezek, Bryant McMillan, Charles Odle, Donald Odle, Ron Walls and Tommy Walls. Honorary pallbearers were Marvin Hager, James Cox, Marlin Felts and David Urbanovsky.

The family has designed West Brethren Church in West for memorials.

Expression Of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 88 in Houston, Texas, wish to express our sincere sympathy, on behalf of our entire membership, to the family of AMALIE RUBACH CERNOSEK, who passed away on November 5, 1988.

She was born January 17, 1903 in.

Snook, Texas. She was an employee of Nabisco Brands, Inc. She became a member of Lodge No. 88 in 1937.

Survivors include one sister, Sideonia Poehls; three brothers, Henry Rubach, Theodore Rubach and John Rubach.

Interment was in Snook, Texas.

Brother Emil Matula [right] being presented a beautiful plaque for service with SVPS, which was presented to him by Dominic Netek.

SVPS Secretary For 17 Years Brother Emil Matula who has been secretary of Chapter 11, Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance for the past 17 years in San Antonio, has turned in his duties to a new secretary, Margaret Swintek.

Brother Emil was dedicated to his position and was always available when needed. A lot of time and hard work accounted for more than $8,000,000 in fire insurance.

He was also, at one time, the president and vice president of the chapter. The dedication and hard work proved to be very fruitful, which has new shown tremendously in membership and the written insurance policies. Of course, we all know that whatever assignment Brother Emil has, he will always put all his energy into it to make it a success. Uz kamaradi pomalu starnem.

Brother Emil and his wife, Evelyn, will now have more time to make trips to Las Vegas and to visit their families throughout the state. He is well known throughout the State of Texas for his great interest and his time and hard work he has given to the Czech fraternal organizations, namely, the SPJST and KJT. The membership wishes him well and that he enjoys his trips with his wife as he travels through our beautiful America.

New officers for the year 1989 are: President -- Bill Mares, Vice President -- Louis Jasek and Secretary -Margaret Swintek.

Schimceks Attend Reunion In City Mr. and Mrs. Alvin A. (Frances) Schimcek, who reside in the Highland Park area, were among the 26 members and their wives attending the fourth reunion of Battery "D" of the 93rd Anti - Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, United States Army.

The reunion was held at the Travelodge Alamo on the river in mid October. Schimcek hadn't seen his "buddies" with the exception of one in 43 years.

Frances and Alvin A. Schimcek Cpl. Schimcek served 41 months with Battery "D" overseas in the Pacific in Hawaii, Palmyra Island, the Philippines and Okinawa during World War II. Battery "D" received a unit commendation while on Okinawa for shooting down more planes than any other battery in the Pacific known at that time.

A native of Wilson County, Schimcek was inducted into the U.S. Army on 6 January 1942 and received his discharge on 1 October 1945.

During his 41 months overseas, he never had a furlough, came home for a visit or had a pass while in the Army.

After his discharge, he started working at the Pearl Brewery and continued there for 35 years until his retirement on January 31, 1981.

Schimcek and his wife were married on September 14, 1946.

He has received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and Bronze Star, Okinawa Campaign Medal and Bronze Star; Good Conduct Medal, six overseas chevrons, one Hash mark; and the POA Shoulder Patch Insignia.

The next reunion of Battery "D" will be held in November 1989 at New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wine balloons attached to gold covered bricks.

In front of a white trellis decorated with English ivy, a tiered white and gold wedding cake with four satellite shaped cakes surrounding it manifested the wedding decor.

The groom's cake was chocolate with pecans on top. Containers of nuts and mints flanked one side of the cake.

A dried arrangement of various farm products created by J.R. Homeyer, along with the silver coffee service, enhanced the groom's table. Fruit punch was served from a gold bowl.

Catering the cakes and punch was Johnny Ruth Homeyer.

An interesting conversation piece was an animated miniature bride and groom which were placed on a table next to the stage. The display was

executed by Johnny Gordy.

After lunch, the joyous afternoon was spent in dancing and visiting by all. Music was furnished by Southern Rain.

The 50th anniversary party was hosted by nieces and nephews of Robert and Tracy.

Guests attending the celebration, in addition to those from Caldwell, came from Temple, Taylor, Houston, Austin, College Station, Hearne, Cameron, Holland, Dallas, Zavalla, Clute, Katy, Buckholts, Wortham, Smetana, East Bernard, Lubbock, Waco, Pasadena, San Antonio and Bryan, Texas.

Mrs. Tracy Wine is also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 186 and received her 50 - year membership pin this year.

Celebrate 50th Anniversary

On Sunday, October 9, 1988, Tracy Chaloupka Wine and Robert Wine celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Tracy and Robert were married on Sunday, October 9, 1938, at 8:30 a.m. by the Rev. A.S. Broaddus.

The 50th wedding anniversary celebration was held at the SPJST Lodge No. 186 building in Caldwell, Texas.

Beginning at noon, a barbecue luncheon was served to approximately 600 guests, which was catered by Dave Schoeneman and his helpers. Brother Norman Haisler gave the invocation preceding the meal.

Seated at the head table were the brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews of Robert and Tracy.

Following lunch, a short program, emceed by O.T. Wine, was presented.

After the toast was given by O.T. Wine, Annie Lee Mrnustik read a congratulatory 50th wedding anniversary card for the couple that was received from Ronald and Nancy Reagan.

The lodge hall was beautifully decorated with various greenery, potted plants, gaily colored balloons and lights.

A white and gold color scheme was carried out on the tables which were decorated with champagne glasses and

1988 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple.

The bride is the daughter of Elmer G. Skrabanek of Temple and the late Mary Lou Skrabanek. The bridegroom is the son of John J. Russell of Portland, Oregon.

The Rev. Walter Matus officiated at the ceremony. Music was provided by Russell Hoelscher of Temple, organist and soloist; and Judith Riola of Cameron, soloist.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a formal satin gown featuring a fitted waistline with lace and pearls, long sleeves and sweetheart neckline, with a cathedral train.

The bride's bouquet was a cascade of bridal white roses with satin dusty rosettes, baby's breath with ivy and pearl accent. The bride's veil was made by her sister, Marcia Dodd.

Matron of honor was Marcia Dodd of Cameron, sister of the bride.

Bridesmaids were Nora Skrabanek and Michelle Skrabanek, both of Temple, sisters of the bride, Vickie Antis, Kim Hoelscher and Amy Pagel, all of Temple.

The bridesmaid wore tea - length rose colored taffeta dresses overlaced with rose colored lace. The attendants carried a bouquet of satin dusty rosettes with gray flowers and baby's breath, accented with gray and white ribbons streaming down. They were also made by Marcia Dodd.

Best man was Philip Williams of Temple. Groomsmen were Gavin Staples and Kenny Marshall of Copperas Cove, Randy Black of Dallas, Gene Skrabanek of Temple, brother of the bride, and Greg Klein of Japan.

The groomsmen wore black long tail tuxs with black and gray pin striped pants.

Flower girl was Kelly Dodd of Cameron. Ring bearer was Christopher Seeker of Ridgecrest, California. Rice bag girl was Amanda Dodd of Cameron.

Seating guests and lighting candles were Ted Dodd of Cameron and Clayton Cabla of Seaton.

A reception followed at Seaton Star Hall.

After a wedding trip to San Antonio the couple will live in Belton.

The bride, a graduate of Temple Junior College with an Associates Arts Degree in general business, is employed with Farmers Mutual Protective Association as a policy processing clerk.

A graduate of Copperas Cove High School, the bridegroom is employed at Atkinson Electric as an electrician.

The bride and her family are members of Lodge No. 47, Seaton (Star Hall).

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin T. Batla, of E artlett, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary October 30, 1988 at the American Legion Hall in Bartlett with a reception.

The couple was married November 3, 1938 by the late Rev. Theodore Streng, of Brenham, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bartlett.

Attendants were Mrs. Binnie Bones, sister of the bridegroom, of Austin, matron of honor; Mrs. Ruby Limmer Perritt, of Colleyville, maid of honor; Raymond Batla, brother of the bridegroom, of Austin, best man and Albert Janke of Bartlett, usher.

served was a white, three - tiered wedding cake decorated with burgandy roses and green leaves, the original wedding colors. These colors were also used in the decorations.

Batla is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Batla, of Temple, while Mrs. Batla is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Zschiesche, of Bartlett.

They are members of SPJST Lodge No. 80, Holland.

Couple Celebrates Golden Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Karol Vaculik of West celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and talked about the somewhat unusual circumstances surrounding their marriage.

The setting surrounding their marriage could make for an interesting novel. It was in 1938 when Europe was prepared for a great turmoil and politicians were busy trying to appease Germany's Hitler. They gave him the so-called Sudentenland, a borderline region of Czechoslovakia, and Hilter was ready to take the rest of Czechoslovakia.

Mobilization of armed forces in Czechoslovakia (where the Vaculiks lived) was declared in May and Mrs. Vaculik said the population was steadfast and enthusiastic to fight the Germans and to defend their Republic. Bunkers were manned and storage rooms were filled with ammunition and other needed equipment, but nothin g happened and the military personnel were sent home.

President Benes went to Moscow to ask for help, but returned with promises and no concrete results.

Czechoslovakia's allies, France and Yugoslavia, were unable to help, and

Mr. and Mrs. Karol Vaculik finally England, France and Italy signed the Munchen agreement which allowed Hitler to take complete control of Czechoslovakia.

During these dramatic events of world history, the Vaculiks decided to get married. Mrs. Vaculik stated, "We set our wedding date on October 16 1938." That September, President Benes called for the new mobilization of armed forces and all male personnel were called again. "We did not know

how things would develop, so we returned all the food and other goods and decided to wait and see how the situation in Europe developed."

"Our wedding day was postponed" she continued," but my future husband wrote me a letter saying I could visit him." Mrs. Vaculik's grandmother lived there, so she traveled to Miloslavov and stayed for two weeks, waiting for an opportune time to get married. Mr. and Mrs. Vaculik decided to marry as soon as possible and also that she would stay in Slovakia, Czechoslovakia.

Mrs. Vaculik stated, "I wrote to my parents in Moravia, Czechoslovakia, about our decision and asked them to bring my wedding dress and legal papers because the wedding date had been set for October 15, 1938." On Saturday, the day before the wedding, the bride - to - be said she was nervous because her father, who was bringing the baked goods and ducks, was late. He finally arrived saying the trains were delayed because there were many soldiers and military equipment moving on the rails.

Her future husband was assigned to guard duty on the Slovak - Hungarian border and received only one day off for the wedding. Mrs. Vaculik stated, "For that reason, an uncle went to guard and on Sunday, we went to the County Seat in Stvrtok to get married.

We rode there on a horse - drawn buck board and on arriving, the city's notary public refused to marry us because he had his notary apparatus packed in boxes and was ready to leave because the Hungarians were taking that part of Slovakia." This was in the same vicinity of their future home.

"Karol, the groom, called to some office," Mrs. Vaculik said, "and after a telephone conversation, the notary public put on his official clothing and opened a book with the ceremony in it and in several seconds we were married and my name changed from Simcikova to Vaculikova. My father and one of my husband's brothers were witnesses.

It happened unbelievably fast after so many troubles." The bride wore a custom - made gray suit, white blouse and a hat. The groom wore a military uniform and they were married October 16, 1938.

Mrs. Vaculik continues, "my husband Karol stayed home overnight and early the next morning, he went to finish his guard duty."

After the Hungarians took the borderline region, many settlers were forced to flee their well - established and expensive homes with only their luggage in their hands. "We stayed on our home property and some of our fields were in Hungary. This circumstance made it possible for us to help people flee from Czechoslovakia to. Yugoslavia, and to the West. We would go to work in our fields and an escapee would be covered with hay and transported illegally to Hungary," she added.

Their 50th wedding anniversary was a different story as their friends Willa Mae Cervenka and Mildred Dokupil gave them a party at the Vaculik's home in West. "They invited our friends, who brought the drinks, hors d'oeuvres, food, pastried and everything that made the celebration special. The guests also brought gifts," said Mrs. Vaculik.

The table was graced with a beautifully decorated two - tiered cake, the top layer had a miniature bride, attired in a gold dress and a groom.

Cocktails for toast proposals honoring the couple were Slivovice and Becherovka that came from Czechoslovakia and egg cognac.

Mrs. Jan Vaculik, daughter - in law, served punch and some special delicious Czechoslovakian pastries she baked.

Jana Vaculik, granddaughter, greeted the guests and presided at the guest book.

Mrs. Vaculik said, "It was really a surprise and it touched my heart, I cried."

Those attending were Millie Kubatova, Willa Mae Cervenka, Joyce Taggart, George and Clarene Blahuta, Irene Wolf, Helen Wolf, George and Lillie Smajstrla, Bill and Mildred Dokupil, Rudy and Maxine Sefcik, Henry and Cressi Girard, Mary Ann Mladenka, Julia Girard, John and Mary Lee Simcik, Freddy and Nita Gerik, Henrietta Cervenka, Josef and Irene Borvak and 2 sons.

The Vaculiks have 2 sons, Karol Vaculik III, living in Hluk, Czechoslovakia and Jan Vaculik living in West, Texas. Four grandchildren Karol Vaculik IV and Sarka Vaculik Ondraskova living in Hluk, Czechoslovakia, Jana and Jan II Vaculik of West.

Two great - grandchildren, Karol Vaculik V and Michelle Ondraskova of Hluk, Czechoslovakia.

Mr. Karol Vaculik is retired from the Germainis Feed Factory. Mrs. Lidka Vaculik is also retired. She did domestic jobs and also was employed by a factory.

They lived in Los Angeles, California for 13 years and in West, Texas for 10 years.

The entrance of the reception featured a table with a floral arrangement and a photo of the couple when they were young.

Mrs. Lidka Vaculik's corsage was made of yellow roses, and Mr. Karol Vaculik had a yellow rosebud boutonniere.

Also the Vaculiks received many beautiful cards, phone calls, and from a friend, a very beautiful large floral arrangement of yellow flowers, gold ribbon, featuring the letters, 50th Anniversary.

Karol and Lidka Vaculik said, "We thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts, and we will never forget what you did for us. God bless all of you, we love you."

Successful Program Of Mutual Visits With Czech Agriculture-Related People It is possible to hear more Czech spoken around East Bernard in Wharton County again. The speakers are native visitors from Moravia, coming for the second time already.

The program is sponsored by the agreement between the Klub Kontinental Group Tours, operated by Mr. Rudolph Klecka from East Bernard, Texas and the agribusiness unit called JZD Agrokombinat Slusovice, Czechoslovakia, where the overseas visitors work. The program is becoming more and more popular and both sides benefit well from it. Ethnic Czechs living in the United States have a unique possibility to visit the country of their ancestors and to learn more about it

Wednesday, November 23, 1988—VESTNiK013 than is possible by taking a conventional trip. Czechs can appreciate the heritage of the national culture preserved in the New World and can bring back ideas useful for the development of their economy. This could be call openness.

The group Of Czechs who arrived in Houston on October 27th was actually already the second one. They were able to look forward to the program at least according to the experience of the very first group which visited Texas about the same time last year. The schedule of the visit was well organized and provided a good sample of activities and life - style that we have in the United States: Many organizations and individuals contributed to the program and their assistance was greatly appreciated. To mention at least some of them, Hlavinka Brothers, Lucille Ferguson and KJT of East Bernard, Blue Bell Creamery of Brenham, Port City Stockyards of Sealy, Stephen F. Austin Country Club of San Felipe, Bryan Swaim of Texas A&M, SPJST, Professor Bob Skrabanek, Professor.

Joseph J. Skrivanek, Jr., and Lydia Faust, the owner of Snook Baking Company of Snook, Paul Lewis of the Texas Department of Agriculture, The Austin Ethnic Society, the Austin Czech Club, Mr. Willie I. Kocurek of Texas American Bank, Westlake, and Israel Tapick - Martin Food Service Company of Houston. Their care and the care of many others, including the host families at East Bernard is acknowledged with gratitude. The program started with visits to the East Bernard Public School. The visit to the school, conducted by Superintendent Dr. Winkler, was very impressive. The system of practical education and the equipment of the school, including computers, were appreciated. They toured various businesses of East Bernard, operated mostly by people of Czech origin. After having explored East Bernard and its environs, the group moved to Houston to admire the space achievements of the United States at NASA. A visit to the seaside is always exciting for the members of a nation without a sea, so the visit to the historical Galveston followed. Almost as exciting was the experience of walking among the skyscrapers of downtown Houston.

On November 2nd the group of Czechs visited Blue Bell Creamery at Brenham and then moved to Sealy to see the auction of cattle, which was a good experience for those connected with animal production. The evening of November 2nd was spent in Stephen F. Austin Country Club of San Felipe near the historical site of the Brazos River. This was a good opportunity to learn something from the history of Texas, The visit to Texas A&M University was scheduled for the next day and included Kleberg Animal Science Center, Meats Laboratory and TAMU Dairy. The latter was of great interest for the visitors since their own enterprise possesses an imported herd of registered Canadian Holsteins intended for the improvement of local dairy industry. The following visit to the Czech community of Snook was very lovely. The lunch was at the local SPJST and very interesting contributions by Professor Joseph J. Skrivanek, Jr. and Professor Bob Skrabanek explained to the visitors what was the life in Czech communities in 20s and 30s like. It was a clear message of the practical importance of the wise proverb of the Czech heritage that says: "Respect yourself and you will be respected by the world." The achievements of the Czech community, which began with

empty hands but with the wisdom of their ancestors, were really amazing.

The program continued in Austin with a tour conducted by the Texas Department of Agriculture - Stiles Farm Foundation and Elgin Breeding Service. The most important sights of Austin, the Capitol and LBJ Library, were naturally not omitted. Austin Ethnic Society and Austin Czech Club prepared a nice reception with the help of Willie Kocurek of the Texas American Bank, Westlake for the evening of November 4th. Sending off the group with six dozen kolache made

by Mrs. Edith Hajda of Granger. And, last but not least, to get a balanced feeling of America, the guests were provided with a possibility to watch the football game match of Texas University vs Houston. The official program was closed with the farewell party at the Riverside Hall of East Bernard, eight days after the Welcome Party at Rudolph and Henrietta Klecka's home.

The program of the visit of Czechs to Texas was really enjoyable and successful for everybody who participated in the program. It is intended to proceed in mutual relations not only by organizing reciprocal visits but also probably by exchanging children and/or students to promote the ties of the Czech community in the United States with the country of their ancestors. Another farm exchange is scheduled for next September, October, November 1989.

Family Held Reunion In Frelsburg

One hundred twenty descendants of Antonin and Celestine Kulhanek were present for the 16th Kulhanek reunion held Sunday, September 25, 1988 at Sts. Peter and Paul Dining Hall in Frelsburg. Monsignor Bockholt celebrated Holy Mass for deceased members at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Assisting Monsignor Bockholt was Deacon Jerry Kulhanek of Galena Park. Mr. Leonard Kulhanek of Houston and Mr. Robert Socha of Frelsburg served as lectors.

Registration began at 11 a.m. A basket lunch was served at 12:30 p.m. with Deacon Jerry Kulhanek leading the prayer before serving of the meal.

The business meeting began at 1:30 p.m. with Mrs. Wanda Faldyn, president, presiding, Deacon Jerry Kulhanek led the opening prayer and welcomed everyone to the reunion.

Mrs. Dianne Seidel, secretary, read the minutes and Mrs. Mary Luedke gave the treasurer's report. Mr. Leonard Kulhanek, historian, spoke briefly about the Kulhanek Family History Book. He stated that additional sheets to the book may be added in the future. Relatives attending were recognized in family groups as the descendants of Frank, Joseph, Maurice, Albert, Anton Kulhanek and Marie Kulhanek Canik, five of the children of Antonin and Celestine Kulhanek.

Also recognized were the two oldest male and female relatives attending,

Mr. Joe Canik of Frelsburg, age 86 and Mr. Alfred Canik of Frelsburg, age 83, Mrs. Albina Krenek, of Wallis, age 96 and Mrs. Mary Dvorak of Frelsburg, age 91.

The two longest married couples present were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kubicek of Frelsburg who have been married 62 years, also Mr. and Mrs. Joe Canik. of Frelsburg, married 62 years.

The most recently married couple present- were Stanley and Judith Michulka of Wallis, married 8 days.

The youngest person present was 14 - month - old Christopher Wunderlich, son of James and Ruth Wunderlich of Houston.

Traveling the longest distance to the reunion were Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wilde of San Angelo, Texas.

A drawing for door prizes was held.

Family Reunion

Lala

The Lala reunion for the State of Texas was held in Victoria on September 25, 1988. This was the third biennial reunion to be held by the families of John, Joseph, Mattias and Katherine Lala. John, Joseph and Mattias Lala immigrated to Texas from Hodonic, Bechyne, Czechoslovakia beginning in 1854.

John Lala came to Texas with his wife, Barbara Miksovsky and two children, Anna and Joseph. A third child, Frank was born in Industry, Austin County where they settled.

There are over 1,000 descendents in Texas today.

Ninety - five Lala descendants attended the reunion. The oldest person at the reunion was Frances Zettel Lala of Needville. The youngest person at the reunion was Lana Saski, daughter of Brenda and Marvin Saski.

Mark and Darla Buccigrossi traveled the fartherest. Ann Marek Lalla of Taylor was given an award for her contribution to the genealogical research. Rosalie Janecka was recognized as a "Pioneer Citizen of Jackson County" and she sang two songs, one in Czech.

Doris Obsta gave a short history of the family and displayed family charts for those attending to become familiar with their lineage. The Lalas have been traced back to 1780.

A covered dish luncheon was served.

Kovar - Volcik - Prcin Reunion Held The annual Kovar, Volcik, Prcin reunion was held October 2, 1988 at the Circleville VFW Hall.

A covered dish meal was served to approximately 75 guests attending from West, Waco and Corpus Christi, plus many surrounding towns. Rev. Gordon Hejl led the Grace before the noon meal. Guests were asked to remember the ones absent and the descendants of families in a minute of silent moment.

A short business meeting was held and a vote was taken to have the next reunion on October 29, 1989. Officers are President Erna Kovar, Vice President Leslie Loessin, Secretary Marie Ann Repple, Treasurer Ruby Loessin and Reporter Evelyn Leshikar.

Diane King and family, Donnie Schwetner and family traveled the longest distance; shortest distance went to the Leslie Loessin family; oldest person in attendance was Hermina Wentrcek; the youngest was 5 - month - old Bryce London, son of Peggy (Leshikar) and David London.

The afternoon was spent in bidding on items brought to auction off. The evening was enjoyed visiting.

Actigall, a drug introduced this month by Ciba Pharmaceutical Company, effectively dissolves cholesterol gallstones of an inch or less in diameter, as shown by tests on more than 400 patients conducted since 1976 by Dr. Gerald Salen of Cabrini Medical Center in New York City. Treatment involves taking two capsules a day for six months to two years. The cost, about $1,500 annually, is reimbursable by insurance. Actigall isn't the first gallstone - dissolving drug, and it may cause uncomfort. But it has less severe side effects than its predecessor, Chenix, which raises blood cholesterol levels. Actigall does have some major drawbacks. It won't dissolve calcified stones or those that are larger than an inch across. Once the drug is stopped, stones may recur in up to 50 percent or patients, who would then need to restart drug therapy or to consider surgery.

Patients whose stones are too large for drug therapy alone may soon be able to combine drugs with lithotripsy, a shock - wave therapy used to shatter kidney stones.
